Wendy from New Hampshire Wins Our RuPaul’s DragCon Fan Video Contest!

ConDRAGULATIONS to our RuPaul’s DragCon Fan Video Submission contest, Wendy from New Hampshire! Wendy wins two free VIP Weekend Passes to #DragCon! Check out her video!

Wendy is a big RuPaul’s Drag Race fan who even even has Adore, Jujubee, and RuPaul signature tattoos! She said:

I’m so happy! I created the video so I could win the passes for my friends Cody & Frank who are going for the very first time (we met because of Drag Race). VIP passes were sold out before they were able to come up with the money for the trip, and I already had my VIP passes. I can’t wait to tell them!

I decided to keep my entry Instagram friendly, which is why I kept it to a minute in length. It was super hard to edit it into one minute though, as it meant that I couldn’t fit everything in because I’ve been to both DragCons & there is just so much to share & be excited about. And people should be excited, which is what I hoped to convey. Thank you SO much! Truly grateful to have been chosen! I can’t wait round three!!! Especially happy to be sharing it with such awesome friends!

How sweet of her to help her friends out! Can’t wait to see you there, Wendy! I also want to thank EVERYONE who sent in videos. Thank you all for participating! Get your tickets at rupaulsdragcon.com!

RuPaul On DragCon 2017: “Parents Know That This Is a Safe Space For Their Kids To Understand Diversity.”

We’re FOUR weekends away from RuPaul’s DragCon 2017 (yes, that’s 26 days hunties!) Amidst the wildly successful new season of RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 9, drag race fans will get the opportunity (for the third year in a row!) to meet all their favorite queens at the Los Angeles Convention Center on April 29-30. RuPaul recently sat down with Entertainment Weekly to discuss the family friendly event, the importance of finding your tribe, and some new plans that will unveil at this year’s Con: a Kid’s Zone for starters.

Check it out:

The inaugural Kids Zone section will debut as part of DragCon 2017, marking an inclusive, interactive section RuPaul tells EW was spurred by his desire to foster a sense of community amid the tumultuous political climate in the U.S.

“What’s brilliant about DragCon is all the young people [who attend] — I’m talking 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 years old,” the Emmy winner says. “They come with their parents and they get to meet all these other kids from around the world that they know online… You can’t beat meeting your tribe in person!”

“[In the beginning] we thought, well, we’ll get some drag queens and gay guys, but it’s clear that parents know that this is a safe space for their kids to understand diversity,” he notes. “And I mean diversity across the board — not just gay or straight or drag queens — I mean across the board. Smart parents are bringing their kids, and that’s why we have a Kids Zone.”

Ru isn’t doing it all by himself, though: He’s enlisted the help of acclaimed author Michelle Tea, a 2017 convention partner who previously founded Drag Queen Story Hour, a program which sees men in drag reading books to children at local bookstores as a means to inspire tolerance and acceptance at an early age. Kids can also have their faces painted and work on arts and crafts.
RuPaul’s DragCon runs between April 29-30 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Tickets — including full weekend passes — are available now here (kids are admitted free of charge). For a full list of speakers and other guests, check out DragCon’s official website.

Giant Boob Appears in London to Raise Awareness About the Social Stigma of Breastfeeding

A giant boob suddenly dotted the the London skyline March 26 (Mother’s Day in the UK) as part of the #freethefeed campaign, a movement that promotes a non-judgmental approach to feeding. The oversized mammary is courtesy of Mother London, a British independent creative agency that raises awareness about the social stigmas surrounding breastfeeding.

“It’s hard to believe that in 2017, UK mothers still feel watched and judged when feeding in public,” writes Mother London in a blog post. “This was our mother’s day project. A celebration of every woman’s right to decide how and where they feed their children without feeling guilty or embarrassed about their parenting choices.”

What’s a girl to do when she isn’t doing press for her (fourth collaboration!) upcoming Sofia Coppola-directed film “The Beguiled,” in Las Vegas?! Why, go see Britney Spears’ infamous residency production “Piece of Me” tour, of course! Besides having an incredible “comeback” in 2016, Kirsten Dunst also possesses an illuminating (but sparse) Instagram account (yes, yours truly is one of the 38 people she follows, thank you very much) where she shared the news that she was in attendance at Spears’ show on Friday night. After posting a pic (she had GOOD seats) of Britney, she captioned the image “She worked bitch” with a heart emoji. Heart swoon. Two queens.

Check out what Britney wrote back in response:

Instagram Photo

Britney responded with:

Ugh. It’s TOO cute I can hardly STAND it.

The two haven’t had a back-and-forth since this ICONIC moment (skip to 1:30 – thanks Edward!):

Could we expect a duet in the future?! For those of you who don’t know, Kiki sang in the smash hit “Get Over It” back in 2004:

Conceived in the Summer of 2015, M.O. Underwear is the expression of a determined once underwear model, who has curated a new level of underwear. As an underwear model based in New York, his goal was to create a line of underwear that would surpass any brand for which he modeled in the past.

Through learning about the different components of what it truly takes to produce an underwear collection, and mixing that with his own creative designs, M.O. was born. Each collection is a perfect mix of blended comfort with fashion.

Designed in New York and produced entirely in Los Angeles, M.O. Underwear seeks to inject both the male and female markets with a dose of excitement. Our expertly sourced fabrics along with fresh and youthful designs have resulted in products that aim to please both men and women.

Lunchtime Suggestion: Here’s a Ham & Cheese Sandwich that Looks Like Vin Diesel!

$

0

No you weren’t hallucinating. The headline is real. So is this ham and cheese sandwich that is a dead ringer for actor Vin Diesel.

It’s the work of William Osman, a mechanical/electrical engineer in Ventura, California, who was challenged by a fan to make a Vin Diesel deli sandwich “using laser-cut cross sections of laser-cut ham.”

Via HuffPo:

Osman used a computer program to create a model of Diesel’s upper torso. He then used the laser to cut layers and layers of the cheapest supermarket ham he could buy.

Those layers were then assembled into Vin Diesel’s likeness.

He’s hoping the Fast & Furious star won’t “chew him out” if he reads his article.

“If Vin Diesel ever sees this, I’m sorry,” he says at one point. Later on, he adds, “This is one of the worst things I have ever done, like, in my life.”

The googly eyes, btw, are NOT edible.

California’s 34th District Election TODAY: WOW’s Exclusive Q&A with Candidates Jimmy Gomez, Wendy Carrillo, and Maria Cabildo

$

0

The 34th Congressional District of California is holding a Special Primary Election for the US House of Representative TODAY, Tuesday, April 4th, 2017, with 24 candidates vying to fill the vacancy in the central Los Angeles district.

The election is the first opportunity for Californians to send someone new to Washington, DC, since Trump became elected and the Republicans solidified their hold on both houses in Congress.

Out of some of the most endorsed candidates, three responded to our interview questions regarding LGBTQ issues and why we should be considering them for candidacy.

Jimmy Gomez; Democrat

“I am not afraid to run to the fight and stand up for policies that have done the most good for the most people.”

On the other candidates:

“I am the only candidate with a record of running to the fight to move Progressive legislation passed, including California’s historic Paid Family Leave law, legislation requiring senior care facilities to undergo training on serving LGBTQIA seniors and legislation extending regulations on greenhouse gasses.”

On supporting minority and LGBTQ Communities:

“I have been a strong advocate for LGBT and communities of color in the State Assembly and will continue fighting for these communities in Washington, that is why Equality California, Stonewall Democratic Club, Planned Parenthood, United Farmworkers and the California Labor Federation all support me.  I have never been afraid to run to the fight and stand up for policies that do the most good for the most people, especially those minority communities that are ignored or under-served.”

On fighting the Trump Administration:

“It is not enough to merely say “no” to the harmful and divisive policies coming out of the White House.  Whoever comes in needs to have the experience to hit the ground on day one. With my experience I will be able to start on the first day and know how to use the power of the office – not just the publicity power of holding press conferences and speeches, but also the levers of power to affect the appropriations process to fight the deep budget cuts to critical services, the use of correspondence, legislative and field hearings to demand greater transparency to expose the flagrantly unconstitutional actions of this Administration with respect to immigration and undermining civil liberties.”

To learn more about Jimmy Gomez, visit his website, Jimmy for Congress.

Wendy Carrillo; Democrat

“I’m running to be a loud, bold, unapologetic progressive who will fight for the values of the 34th Congressional District in Congress. I don’t believe that we are a nation of fear and oppression, but rather one of hope and opportunity. I want to defend these values in Congress. This country was there for me and my family when I needed it. Now, I want to be there for it.”

On the other candidates:

“If elected, I would be the first formerly undocumented woman in Congress. I would also be the first Salvadoran-American in the House of Representatives, at a time when our Congress is overwhelmingly white, male, and rarely shares the lived experience of millions of regular Americans in our country. My candidacy is different because in this crucial moment in our nation’s history, we need unapologetic and fearless activists who will stand up to the racist administration and lead on LGBTQ issues and trans-women’s liberation.”

On her priorities:

“We are more powerful if we recognize that our battles are interconnected. I believe that women’s rights are human rights, that love is love is love is love, that Black Lives Matter, that the Fight for $15 should be national, that we should Say Her Name, that Mni Wiconi (Water is life), that where no human being is illegal and we are Here to Stay, that Science is real, and that Sí, Se Puede.”

On supporting the LGBTQ Community:

“I know that there is such as a thing as undocumented, gender nonconforming, person of color who needs a champion in Congress to defend their right to exist and live without fear. I am committed in ensuring that the LGBTQ community has access to resources that empower and create upward mobility. I don’t need a poll to know that the homicide rates for trans women of color are appalling, and I don’t need a poll to tell me that it is the right thing to take to the floor of the House of Representatives and Say Her Name.”

Maria Cabildo; Democrat

“My tag line is: ‘Builder. Leader. Fighter.’ It captures who I have been throughout my life. I believe in the power of people come together to create change. Ours has been a people-powered campaign, not driven by special interests.”

On supporting the LGBTQ Community:

“I have been an ally since I was a tween and learned that my older brother was gay and felt deep pain when I saw him bullied. He later died during the height of the AIDS pandemic. I am with the LGBTQ community because I see it as my community even though I am straight. I would have loved for my brother to have seen and been able to enjoy all the gains in civil rights that his community has made since his passing in 1995. I will fight to protect the rights of the LGBTQ community, especially the trans community that faces so much discrimination and faces so many barriers to economic opportunity and access to critical services.”

On the Trump Administration:

“I plan to fight the Administration by holding it accountable to the American people. Organizing is critical and we must take back the house and reconnect the Democratic Party to its natural base.”

On the other candidates:

“I have already had a distinguished career outside of politics. I started my career in 1993, building housing for homeless adults, including people with chronic mental illness, AIDS and other special needs. I founded East LA Community Corporation in 1995. I became it’s Executive Director in 1999, while there I leveraged over $200 million in pubic and private investment into a community that had been long forgotten by both the public and private sector. I have a proven track record.”

So What Happens After Smartphones? (Hint: Sh*t’s About to Get REALLY WEIRD)

Business Insider has an interesting article about the impending death of the smartphone.

One day, not too soon — but still sooner than you think — the smartphone will all but vanish, the way beepers and fax machines did before it.

Make no mistake: We’re still probably at least a decade away from any kind of meaningful shift away from the smartphone. (And if we’re all cyborgs by 2027, I’ll happily eat my words. Assuming we’re still eating at all, I guess.)

Yet, piece by piece, the groundwork for the eventual demise of the smartphone is being laid by Elon Musk, Microsoft, Facebook, Amazon, and a countless number of startups that still have a part to play.

In the medium term, Microsoft, Facebook, Google, and Apple are all working to build standalone augmented-reality headsets, which will project detailed 3D images straight into your eyes.

Microsoft’s Alex Kipman recently told Business Insider that augmented reality could flat-out replace the smartphone, the TV, and anything else with a screen. There’s not much use for a separate device sitting in your pocket or on your entertainment center if all your calls, chats, movies, and games are beamed into your eyes and overlaid on the world around you.

At the same time, gadgetry like the Amazon Echo or Apple’s own AirPods become more and more important in this world. As artificial-intelligence systems like Apple’s Siri, Amazon’s Alexa, Samsung’s Bixby, and Microsoft’s Cortana get smarter, there will be a rise not just in talking to computers but in having them talk back.

In other words, computers will hijack your senses, more so than they already do, with your sight and your hearing intermediated by technology. It’s a little scary. Think of what Facebook glitches could mean in a world where it doesn’t just control what you read on your phone but in what you see in the world around you.

The promise, though, is a world where real life and technology blend more seamlessly. The major tech companies promise that this future means a world of fewer technological distractions and more balance, as the physical and digital world become the same thing. You decide how you feel about that.

And in the long run, we’re all just going to become cyborgs, so deal with it.

Still, all those decade-plus investments in the future still rely on gadgetry that you have to wear, even if it’s only a pair of glasses. Some of the craziest, most forward-looking, most unpredictable advancements go even further — provided you’re willing to wait a few extra decades, that is.

This week, we got our first look at Neuralink, a new company cofounded by Musk with a goal of building computers into our brains by way of “neural lace,” a very early-stage technology that lays on your brain and bridges it to a computer. It’s the next step beyond even that blending of the digital and physical worlds, as human and machine become one.

Assuming the science works — and lots of smart people believe that it will — this is the logical endpoint of the road that smartphones started us on. If smartphones gave us access to information and augmented reality puts that information in front of us when we need it, then putting neural lace in our brains just closes the gap.

Musk has said this is because the rise of artificial intelligence — which underpins a lot of the other technologies, including voice assistants and virtual reality — means humans will have to augment themselves just to keep up with the machines. If you’re really curious about this idea, futurist Ray Kurzweil is the leading voice on the topic.

So if and when the smartphone dies, it’ll actually be the end of an era in more ways than one. It’ll be the end of machines that we carry with us passively and the beginning of something that bridges our bodies straight into the ebb and flow of digital information. It’s going to get weird.

The Shia LaBeouf Film ‘Man Down’ Sells ONE SINGLE Ticket in the UK

Yep. Shia LaBeouf‘s latest film to be released in the UK – Man Down – only grossed £7 over the weekend. That’s $8.70 in American.

The movie which also stars Aussie HUNK Jai Courtney, only screened in one theater – Reel Cinema in Burley. That may be because it was simultaneously released on demand, and will be released on both DVD and BluRay in May.

Here in the US, the movie did better earning $454,490 but with blockbusters earning millions and even indie film Get Out crossing the $150 million mark, that number seems really low.

Paul Dergarabedian – a senior analyst at ComScore – thinks that this may not be such a bad thing and that just the news of the movie making under two digits may help it.

There could be a silver lining to those seven pounds.

Pepsi Pulls Tone-Deaf Kendall Jenner Ad After Internet Outrage

Well, we can all put away our pitchforks. Pepsi has heard the furious response to their latest commercial, in which Kendall Jenner coopts the resistance, appropriates the Black Lives Matter movement, and uses social justice to sell soda.

The company apologized this morning, and pulled it from YouTube.

From their statement this morning:

“Pepsi was trying to project a global message of unity, peace, and understanding. Clearly we missed the mark and we apologize. We did not intend to make light of any serious issue. We are pulling the content and halting any further rollout. We also apologize for putting Kendall Jenner in this position.”

Jenner has yet to respond to the controversy, but I’m sure the cameras are rolling at the Kardashian compound AS WE SPEAK and a season-long arc is being formulated.
