Does the LGBTQ Community Deserve a Reality Show to Call Their Own?

If you haven’t seen the trailers for What Happens at The Abbey, Fire Island, and/or watched Season One of Finding Prince Charming, you’re going to want to so you can join this discussion! But you’ve definitely heard the uproar as the community marches towards these shows with torches lit.

Logo’s “Fire Island” Trailer

After the severely critical reaction of “What Happens at The Abbey”, I couldn’t help think: Does the LGBTQ Community deserve a reality show? It seems to me the majority of our community has something negative to say about any show willing to advertise us, unscripted or scripted (See: HBO’s Looking). On social media, there is a virtually  endless outcry regarding the color and shape of bodies, sexual conduct, and quasi-celebrity lifestyle that is televised by members of our community.

LOGO’s “Fire Island” Cast Members

I believe the community is not loathing these shows and refusing to watch out of disinterest, but actually jealous.

Logo’s “Finding Prince Charming” Cast Members

Let me explain: When I was barely twenty-one, and believed that I looked fantastic with a bang, I was a cast member on a reality television show in my hometown gayboorhood of Chicago. The premise was simple: Watching the lives of eight LGBTQ friends live day to day. We had it all: lipstick and stud Lesbians, gender-benders, a variety of ethnicities and bodies…there was someone anyone could identify with. Collectively, we were our authentic selves. We not only discussed, but lived: racism, dating, poverty, friendships, and addiction. We truly represented parts of Chicago and the LGBTQ community.

Would-Be “Boystown” Reality Show Cast Members

However, while filming, we were mocked! We’d have beer bottles thrown at us, we were canceled from attending events, and any and every blog was making jokes about our group being too diverse! The show would eventually never see the light of day due to no fault of the cast.

“What Happens at The Abbey” Cast Members

If the shows in question are about candlelit dinners in the back of a pick up truck rather than drunken antics in a nightclub, would the community put the torches down? Will the community be satisfied when we get diversity, or will we mock it? When will the community be happy for all of our lifestyles? I believe the LGBTQ Community needs to unite ourselves. Not only to support the few shows expressing our lives, but to encourage the media to green-light more diverse LGBTQ Programs on television. We all are different, but all the same. Let’s light our torches for worthy causes, rather than eating our own.

People magazine has an exclusive first look at the upcoming Lifetime/World of Wonder biopic Menendez: Blood Brothers, which recently wrapped production in Vancouver. The pic features cutie-patootie Glee alum Myko Oliver and the always breathtaking Nico Tortorella as brothers Lyle and Eric who infamously murdered their well-to-do parents back in 1989. Nico is virtually unrecognizable in his ’80s toupee (in real life Lyle was the butt of many late-night jokes about his atrocious rug). Whatever. Even in pleated khakis and a bad wig, our boy still oozes sexual charisma. Can’t wait.

#RDR: Candace Cameron Bure Wears a “Not Today Satan” Tee & Bianca Del Rio Is NOT Having It!

Candace Cameron Bure shared this image on Instagram. Now, RDR-watchers know whose catch-phrase is, but does Bure?

Bianca Del Rio picked up on this right away and re-shared the image, followed by devils and black heart emojis.

If only, this Republican homophobe knew.

Del Rio’s fans quickly trolled Bure, going in on her, pointing out that “the irony is thick” and that she needs to “look up where that quote comes from.”

Bure responded to Del Rio,

Why do you have to be nasty to me? You don’t know me or my heart. I’m not homophobic and always sad when people think otherwise. Loving Jesus doesn’t mean I hate gay people or anyone. You sent a bunch of hateful people to my page writing horrible things. I hope next time you’ll spread love and kindness, even when you disagree with people. Sending you love and wish you all the best.

Bure says she is a NOT anti-gay, but her history kinda proves the contrary. According to Unicorn Booty,

• In 2012, Bure made it clear where she stands on the Chick-Fil-A anti-gay marriage issue. She posted a photo to her Twitter account showing herself and her son proudly holding up Chick-Fil-A items with the caption, “We love chikin!”

• Bure’s anti-LGBT views were also exposed on The View during her infamous debate about a bakery in Oregon that had the right to refuse to bake a cake for a lesbian wedding. Raven Symoné argued the bakery had discriminated against the couple, but Bure defended their actions saying,

[The bakery had] baked cakes for [the couple]previously. They had a problem with the actual ceremony because that—the ceremony—is what conflicted with their religious beliefs. They are saying that they stand for marriage between a man and a woman.

• When The View began again after the summer break, in September 2015, Bure was absent from a key panel discussion about Kim Davis, the Kentucky clerk who refused to administer marriage licenses to gay couples in her county. She awkwardly joined the panel later in the show. Avoidance?

• In 2016, when discussing the spirituality of Hillary Clinton, Bure went up against Michael Moore. She said,

With some of [Hillary Clinton’s] positions, I don’t believe she lives it. For those people that really look to the Bible, understanding her positions is very difficult.

Moore shot back,

What I would say to the people who are against abortion is, if you are against it, don’t have one. If you are against gay marriage, don’t get gay married. You won’t like it. It’s not for you. But live and let live. You live your faith the way you believe you should live it.

Her history on gay issues does speak for itself, I think. Lesson learned Cadance? Probably not, but DO NOT come for Bianca even by accident, or there will be hell to pay!

#RDR: Why Is This Guy Teaching “Ro-Laska-Tox” To His Students!? Watch

Joe Dombrowski, an openly gay teacher in Royal Oak, Michigan, during an impromptu spelling quiz, decided to include completely made-up words. Used in context, one such word is nothing to a WOW audience, but it left his students really perplexed when he used in a sentence.

Ro-laska-tox were surprised when Jinkx took the crown. If you didn’t get the hypens, I’m sorry — you did not get the word.

Once his students were sufficiently puzzled, he revealed it was all game. April Fool’s! But many students protested:

It’s not even April!”

“It’s close enough.”

“Is this going to be part of our grade?”

“Congratulations, turn in your test. This is going to be on your report card.”

#RDR101: One Opinion on How To Win RuPaul’s Drag Race –(#7. Don’t Take Off Your Wig!)

$

Charisma, Uniqueness, Nerve & Talent.

Got it. After 9 seasons, EVERYONE thinks they know the secret to winning RuPaul’s Drag Race, but as George Lucas said after the huge success of Star Wars, “Anybody who says that they know how to make a blockbuster is delusional or lying.” I’m paraphrasing, but that’s the gist. If it were easy, anyone could repeat it.

New York magazine weighed in on just how to win and writer, E. Alex Jung thinks these are the surefire ways;

Learn to sew! (Or at least glue.)
There will be a sewing challenge. You might have to make a dress out of curtains! Or from apocalyptic trash! Especially early on, RPDR really embraced drag’s DIY roots, which meant that queens had to possess that ability to turn trash into treasure. And no one likes a girl (Naysha Lopez, ugh) who whines about how they don’t know how to sew.

Get ready for Snatch Game.
For the love of Cher, be prepared for this one. Like the unconventional materials challenge on Project Runway or restaurant wars on Top Chef, you know Snatch Game is coming, which is why it’s just shameful if you don’t have a celebrity impersonation locked and loaded. Moreover, a solid Snatch Game impersonation can signal a queen is a threat to win: Jinkx Monsoon’s Little Edie, Bob the Drag Queen’s Uzo Aduba/Carol Channing, etc. The queens who have done best are the ones who know what they’re going to do (which is why professional Britney Spears impersonator Derrick Berry did “well” on season nine). Moreover, take a look at what does well: Celebrities who are mostly visual (Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, etc.) tend to be hard to pull off.

Be funny.
Gay humor has been forged by adversity, so it’s only natural that comedy is an essential part of RuPaul’s legacy. So if you didn’t learn how to throw shade from your drag mother, you need to go and take an improv class or make some gay friends. The days of Tyra Sanchez winning are over: The library is always open.

Don’t rest on pretty.
Speaking of Tyra Sanchez, we get it: You’re hot. You’re so fishy, you make straight guys question their sexuality (which, brava, m’lady). And while a beautiful body and an impressive tuck can wow the first time, it gets old pretty quickly. Don’t become a statistic!

But smile, you’re on HD!
And while your aesthetic can’t merely be “thot,” you still need to know how to paint for the crowd in the back of the bar. Learn to blend!

Get ready to evolve.
Reality television is all about taking the viewer on an emotional face journey. So whether you’re a spooky queen from Party City or a tired-ass showgirl, you have to be able to demonstrate the ability to take a critique from the judges and evolve. So if your thing is narcoleptic oddball, the judges, particularly Michelle Visage, will want you to be able to still knock a red carpet look out of the park.

Don’t take off your wig!
You’re in the bottom two, ready to lip sync for your life, when the lights dim on the main stage. RuPaul is looking at you, unblinking. Diana Ross starts to play on the loudspeakers. The lights are blinding and you’re dancing and you’re feeling yourself and you’re just itching to pull that wig off for the climax. Do. Not. Remove. It. You’re here to snatch other queens’ wigs, not your own.

All seems like good advice to me. Another thing George Lucas once very wisely said;

The secret is not to give up hope. It’s very hard not to because if you’re really doing something worthwhile I think you will be pushed to the brink of hopelessness before you come through the other side.

Can I get an Amen to that!? Tell us what YOU think it takes to win Drag Race on WOW’s Facebook page. (via New York)

George Takei Runs For Congress –”Oh, My!” (#AprilFools)

Takei (L) and Nunes (R)

Gay Icon, Gay Hero, actor and activist George Takei punked us all on that Internet thing late last night with a claim that he was going to run for the US Congress, challenging Fascist Collaborator Devin Nunes in 2018. Just hours after Tweeting, Takei came clean that it was all a joke for April Fool’s Day.

Nunes is, of course, the House Intelligence Committee Chairman looking into the Russian’s influence into our 2016 election and the White House ties to Putin. He is also the world’s most boring looking person. Nunes has represented California’s 21st District from 2003 to 2013, which includes the San Joaquin Valley and eastern Fresno County. Takei and his husband, Brad Altman, live in Los Angeles.

Takei wrote on Twitter:

“Well, the cat’s out of the bag it seems. Let’s do this! #Takei2018 (@GeorgeTakei)”

A link to an interview where he stated that he and his partner were moving to Nunes’ district so he could challenge him for his seat in Congress.

In the interview in the link, he ways:

“Well, I guess the jig is up! With what is going on now in the country, I couldn’t stand by any longer merely as a citizen. I knew I had to take a bigger stand. So that’s why I’m running for Congress. My hope is to challenge Nunes for his seat in 2018.”

Later, Takei admitted it was all in fun, Tweeting:

“No, I’m not running for Congress. Happy 4/1!”But Jon Ossoff is on 4/18. Help him win. Let’s flip Congress in ’18!” (@GeorgeTakei) April 1, 2017

Jon Ossoff

Jon Ossoff is Thomas Jonathan Ossoff, a LGBTQ-friendly, Resistance leading, 30-year-old investigative filmmaker, former congressional aide, who is running in a special election to represent Georgia’s 6th congressional district, replacing Tom Price, the man that POTUS picked as Secretary Of Health and Human Services, or as I call him: That Guy That Is Trying To Kill Me.

#WOWExclusive!: Is Barbra In Talks To Replace Bette in “Hello, Dolly!”? (Can They Afford Her?)

It’s now up for grabs as to who really is more legendary in the role of Dolly Gallagher Levi in Jerry Herman‘s Hello, Dolly. Following in the footsteps of Carol Channing, Pearl Bailey, Bette Midler is now on Broadway in the title role.

Bette’s won an Emmy, Tony, Golden Globe and a Grammy, and is raking in the box office receipts with over $40 million in sales, to date.

But when Bette’s done who will replace the Divine Miss M? How about another A-list diva that knows the part already? Barbra Streisand. Our theater spies tell us that she La Streisand has been quietly talking to the producers about stepping into Bette’s shoes when her run is over.

Is it too good to be true? Rumor has it they might announce as soon as Monday, if they can cough up with the weekly salary, percentage of the gross and other demands that the famously, um, “difficult” Babs requires. Stay tuned.

In the meantime, watch.

#RIP: Pop Artist, James Rosenquist

Unfortunately, this is not an April fool’s gag.

James Rosenquist, the legendary Pop Artist has died. Early on, he earned his living as a billboard painter and it was the perfect training for a pop artist, one of the first on the scene.

Like other pop artists, Andy Warhol & Roy Lichtenstein, Rosenquist adapted the visual language of advertising and pop culture into the context of fine art with a capital A.

Rosenquist said about Pop Art,

They [art critics] called me a Pop artist because I used recognizable imagery. The critics like to group people together. I didn’t meet Andy Warhol until 1964. I did not really know Andy or Roy Lichtenstein that well. We all emerged separately.

Rosenquist achieved pop star status in 1965 with his room-sized painting F-111. New York magazine art critic, Jerry Saltz remembered him and F111 today.

…his 60-panel multi-colored walk-in wrap-around 1964-65 masterpiece, F-111. An irregularly shaped 10-foot tall, 86-foot-long rectangle of oil on canvas and aluminum shiny gaudy thing — we go from the tail of the supersonic fighter and a proto-Christopher Wool silk-screen pattern of flowery wallpaper serving as the jet exhaust, to a giant tractor tire tread, pound-cake, geometric abstract painting here and there, maybe an overhead shot of a cockpit or runway, a woman under a space-helmet-like hair-dryer, the initials USA, a beach umbrella, mushroom cloud, splatters of spaghetti as allusion to Abstract Expressionism and pizza pie, some sea-creature or blue cauliflower, weird wallpaper pattern to the aluminum surface and nosecone of the war-plane. This is a perfect picture of what America looked, felt, and sounded like in 1965…

A pioneer and a giant. James Rosenquist was 83.

#OnThisGayDay: Same-Sex Marriage Is Legal For The First Time

$

amsterdam

April 1, 2001 Huwelijk tussen personen van gelijk geslacht! On this day, The Netherlands became the first country on our pretty spinning blue orb to have Marriage Equality.

Back in the mid-1980s, a group of Gay Rights activists asked the Netherlands  government to allow same-sex couples to marry. Dutch Parliament decided in 1995 to create a special commission, which to investigate even the possibility of same-sex marriages. During this era, the Christian Democrats were not part of the ruling coalition for the first time since the introduction of full democracy in 1815. Two years later, the special commission finished its work  and in 1997 concluded that civil marriage should be extended to include same-sex couples. After the election of 1998, the government promised to deal the issue. But, it took until September 2000  for the final legislation draft to debated in the Parliament.

The Marriage Equality bill passed their House of Representatives by 109 votes to 33. Their Senate approved the bill in December 2000 by 49 to 26. Only the Christian parties, of course, voted against the bill. Although the Christian parties formed the next government, they decided not repeal the law.

The new marriage law read simply:

“Een huwelijk kan worden aangegaan door twee personen van verschillend of van gelijk geslacht. (A marriage can be entered into by two persons of opposing or the same sex).”

Dutch law requires both partners must have Dutch nationality or have residency in the Netherlands. That’s unfortunate; can you imagine of Amsterdam could be a center for same-sex wedding. I would go there just to renew my vows.

They even had their own Kim Davis style problems. Conservative Christians protested and some registrars refused to issues licenses to LGBT couples. In 2007, the new Government announced a policy statement that allowed officials who object to same-sex marriage on principle to refuse to marry same-sex couples. Socialists and Liberals dominated municipal governments and they opposed this policy, claiming that it was the job of a registrar to marry all couples, not just straight couples. They stated that if a registrar opposed same-sex marriage, they should not be allowed hold their post. The city of Amsterdam announced that they would not comply with this new policy, and that all registrars would be obliged to marry same-sex couples.

The law went into effect on this very day in 2001, and on that day four same-sex couples were married by the Mayor of Amsterdam, Job Cohen, who became a registrar specifically to officiate at the weddings. Dolf Pasker, married his partner of six-years, Gert Kasteel. One couple had been living together 36 years. Pink cake and pink Champagne were served to 150 guests.

Weddinginholland

Children did not wander the picturesque cobble stones streets crying in confusion. Straight couples did not find their own marriages crumbling. The canals did not dry up. Anne Frank’s house did not erupt in flames. Hashish could still be enjoyed in the coffeehouses and the Red Light District still provided some sort of release for straight men from the USA. There were no fingers placed in any dykes. Paintings by Rembrandt and Van Gough did not crash to museum floors.

Now, 85% of the Dutch population supported same-sex couples being allowed to marry and adopt children. 22,000 same-sex couples are legally wed in the Netherlands, 52% are female couples.

The Netherlands is a great country to be LGBT. Sex between consenting adults of the same sex was legalized in 1811. The Equal Rights Law was enacted in 1993, banning discrimination in employment, housing, public accommodations, and full rights. Transgendered people can legally change gender.

Amsterdam is one of the most LGBT friendly cities in the world. It is noted for its gay owned/gay friendly bars, bathhouses, hotels, and venues. The national Homomonument, was completed in 1987 and was the first monument in the world to commemorate homosexuals who were persecuted and killed during WW II.

Today, 22 countries proudly allow people of the same sex to be married. I married my guy on our 25th anniversary as a couple, October 9, 2004, in Vancouver BC.

The Walking Dead‘s Daniel Newman has come out as gay in a YouTube video, saying it was “just time.”

But the reason might surprise you. In an emotional YouTube video, Newman says a chance meeting with a girl at a homeless youth center he was volunteering at had changed his mind about being in the closet. The girl had thanked him for helping the LGBT community and after Newman questioned why she was thanking him, she said,

“Because you’re straight.”

Daniel answered,

I’m not straight.

Why have you never said that publicly before? You could help change our lives.”

Newman goes on to say,

It hit me like a gut-punch. It felt like someone knocked the wind out from me. And I realized how important it is in this day and age to be visible – to let people who know you are.

He said that there was no excuse to hide your sexuality when, as the girl pointed out to him, revealing it could help so many people.

“When you’re accomplishing incredible things and you’re hiding who you are, you are hurting hundreds of millions of people.”

Jesus (Tom Payne) came out on
“The Walking Dead” recently

This news comes after Jesus, one of the main characters on the show, also came out as gay. Paul Rovia, played by Tom Payne and better known to the post-apocalyptic band of survivors as Jesus, joined the series last season, but he only made his sexuality clear earlier this month.

Jesus is gay in the original comic book series, which had led fans to question his sexuality ever since the character was written into the show a year ago. The show has featured six LGBT characters over its seven seasons.

A 3-bedroom apartment in New York’s Essex House just hit the market. No big deal, right? Except David Bowie and Iman made it their home for 10 years.

Though they sold it in 2002, but a piece of Bowie remains. A Yamaha piano once played and one by the late icon still sits in the living room, and will be passed on to the next buyer. There’s a dressing room that was designed and built to Iman’s specifications and the couple added a panic room. It has since been taken out.

The 1,877 square foot apartment (pretty small, actually, if you are a superstar) comes with those park views, a newly renovated kitchen, plenty of storage space, en-suite bathrooms, and did I mention BOWIE LIVED HERE!

The current owner purchased it for $4.45 million in 2010 and it’s now on the market for $6.5 milion. For my money, Greta Garbo‘s East Side pad, at $5.95 million is a better deal.

Mark Jenkins brought sculpture to street art and he’s known for these surprising installations in urban spaces. His new book, The Urban Theater, documents his often disturbing street installations and also includes pics of viewers’ responses and interactions. Work from Jenkins oeuvre has been exhibited in Lazarides Galleries and the Kunsthalle Wien, among others but his art was made for the street. Jenkins says his sculptures only become complete for him when they interact with their urban environments and the people within them. But these poor people had no idea what they were experiencing, as you can see from their reaction. You can get The Urban Theater here.

David Bradley, known as “The Curious Confectioner”, teamed with The Robin Collective to make this edible version of the Beyoncé.

Why you ask? Well, there is a BIG cheese carving championship at a London festival this weekend. Of course there is. The team named it Brie-oncé, which is not quite accurate, as the sculpture is actually made of cheddar.

Based on Awol Erizku’s portrait of a pregnant veiled Beyoncé, surrounded by flowers. Its creative director Brandy Klingelpuss (Klingelpuss?!) told CNN,

We talked about putting Babybel in the stomach, but it never actually happened.

So far, no word from the Queen herself. To clarify –as it is taking place in England– Queen Bey, not HRH, Queen Elizabeth II.

Friday on Late Night, Stephen Colbert asked actress and activist Susan Sarandon how she feels now about her past comments that if Donald Trump won the election it would bring on the revolution. Colbert asked,

How’s that going? What’s your assessment of how the revolution is going?

Sarandon pointed to all the town halls full of outraged Americans, saying,

Everybody’s awake, they’re energized.

Yeah, those people whose mosques were burned, and others being deported or gay-bashed, or losing their workplace protections, THEY SURE ARE AWAKE NOW.

Btw, Susan, Jessica Lange is blowing you off the screen in Feud.
