Sad news to report. Bill Cunningham suffered a stroke a few days ago and we all wished him a speedy recovery. But it was not to be. He died today in his beloved Manhattan. He was 87.

Jason Bernstein wrote in the Times, where Cunningham worked for the last 4 decades,

“Cunningham was such a singular presence in the city that in 2009 he was designated a living landmark. And he was an easy one to spot, riding his bicycle through Midtown, where he did most of his field work, his bony-thin frame draped in his utilitarian blue French worker’s jacket, khaki pants and black sneakers (he himself was no one’s idea of a fashion plate), with his 35-millimeter camera slung around his neck, ever at the ready for the next fashion statement to come around the corner.

Nothing escaped his notice, not the fanny packs, not the Birkin bags, not the gingham shirts, not the fluorescent biker shorts.

In his nearly 40 years working for The Times, Mr. Cunningham snapped away at changing dress habits to chart the broader shift away from formality and toward something more diffuse and individualistic.

At the Pierre Hotel on the East Side of Manhattan, he pointed his camera at tweed-wearing blue-blood New Yorkers with names like Rockefeller and Vanderbilt. Downtown, by the piers, he clicked away at crop-top wearing Voguers. Up in Harlem, he jumped off his bicycle — he rode more than 30 over the years, replacing one after another as they were wrecked or stolen — for B-boys in low-slung jeans.”

Arthur Ochs Sulzberger Jr., the Times’s publisher and chairman,

His company was sought after by the fashion world’s rich and powerful, yet he remained one of the kindest, most gentle and humble people I have ever met. We have lost a legend, and I am personally heartbroken to have lost a friend.

He was. In 2010, the documentary film, Bill Cunningham New York, premiered at the Museum of Modern Art to glowing reviews. It’s on Netflix. See it.

If you lived in New York City and were on the scene for any length of time, being photographed by Bill was a right of passage. He will not be soon forgotten.

The only good thing about this news is that he did what he loved, rode around NYC on his bike right until the end. No long illness, or not being able to get out and shoot the city. As far as I’m concerned, I’ll just imagine him on his bike somewhere, using that incredible eye on another (very chic) plane.

Photograph by Krista Kennell

June 26, 1970Sean Hayes:

When I came out of my mom’s womb, I had ‘sitcom’ stamped on my forehead.”

Hayes is a very talented, award-winning, cutie-pie actor and producer, plus he is an out and proud gay man.

Some of you kids are probably too young, but I always found true solace, pride, and lots of laughs by having gay characters appearing in a primetime sitcoms, even if his Will & Grace character, Jack McFarland, generated controversy and a certain amount of push back by the LGBTQ community for being “too gay”. For me, there really is no such thing. It took a while for him to open that closet door, but in 2010, Hayes told The Advocate:

“I am who I am. I was never in, as they say. Never. I feel like I’ve contributed monumentally to the success of the gay movement in America, & if anyone wants to argue, I’m open to it.”

Hayes won a bunch of awards statues for his trophy shelf for his turn as the scene-stealing sidekick on Will & Grace (1998-2006), part of NBC’s Thursday night “Must See TV” powerhouse line-up, including an Emmy Award and four SAG Awards. Will & Grace shared NBC’s hot Thursday night with favorites Friends (1994-2004) and Seinfeld (1989-1998). I used to tape all using a device they called a VCR.

Chicago born Hayes was raised by his mother after his father abandoned the family when Hayes was just 5 years old. He claims that humor was a big part of his growing up with his four older siblings play pranks, including frighenting friends with his mother’s prosthetic eye.  Always creative, he was drawn to music during high school. He studied voice and acting at Illinois State University, taking gigs as a pianist to make money. He began performing at Chicago’s Second City improv troupe, along with Tina Fey, Steve Carell and the lovely Amy Sedaris.

I first took note of Hayes in the sweet, funny, gay-themed indie film Billy’s Hollywood Screen Kiss (1998). His work as gay photographer Billy Collier brought him the role on Will & Grace. He held his own with his seasoned comedic co-stars Debra Messing and Eric McCormack, and he had red hot chemistry with Megan Mullally as Karen Walker.

Hayes kept working after Will & Grace went off the air in 2006. On television he has had guest roles on NBC’s 30 Rock, Parks And Recreation, and IFC’s Portlandia (I don’t watch it, I live it). In 2010, he starred on Broadway in a revivial of the Burt Bacharach musical Promises, Promises opposite Kristin Chenoweth, earning him a Tony Award nomination. Playing real life people, Hayes was SAG Award nominated for his excellent work as Jerry Lewis in the made-for-television film Martin And Lewis (2002) with yummy Jeremy Northam as Dean Martin, and he portrayed Larry Fine in the feature film The Three Stooges (2012), which was a bit of a mixed bag, but not Hayes’ fault. He had a swell story arc on the much missed Smash in 2013, reuniting with Messing and NBC. Hayes produced and starred in the not so funny Sean Saves The World which lasted just 15 episodes in 2013, but let’s not discuss this on his birthday. He has better luck as executive producer of the series Hollywood Game Night, Grimm, and Hot In Cleveland.

Just this week, Hayes told Playbill that in the aftermath of Orlando, he wishes that he had come out of the closet earlier:

“I got Will & Grace, and I thought: ‘Oh, this is different. I don’t know how to handle this. I’m not bright enough, I’m not quick enough, I don’t have the DNA to be a spokesperson for any kind of group of people.’ I had personal issues inside of myself that I regret. I regret not coming out sooner and helping more people, and I regret not coming out during the show. Everybody in the gay community knew I was gay, but it was this fight I had with the press because they want you to come out on their terms, and other gay people want you to come out on their terms, and if you don’t come out on their terms you’re just an asshole, and you’re wrong. Well, each individual human being has a lot of stuff that nobody knows about. Nobody knows what anybody else is going through at any point in their lives.”

“We shouldn’t be fascinated that a straight man can play gay anymore. There’s nothing mind blowing about that anymore. It’s been done. I’d like everyone to just be treated equally, to see people look at you and accept you for who you are as a human being and your spirit. When I ask gay men and women who have children: ‘Tell me how they’re growing up in the world and what their views are as far as gay culture?’ Their answer is: ‘It’s all they’ve ever known, so it’s completely normal to them.’ And could you imagine, if it was ‘All the world has ever known’? What a much better place we’d all be in.”

Would you ever have guessed that Hayes was a homo?

This summer Hayes is appearing on Broadway in the title role of An Act Of God, a well-received satire of Judeo-Christian attitudes by David Javerbaum. Cue the Just Jehovah! jokes. He has received terrific reviews.

Always intensely reserved about his private life, Hayes married his adorable, slightly bearish boyfriend of eight years, music producer Scott Icenogle in November 2014. They make an adorable couple. They make funny, sweet videos for their YouTube channel, Kitchen Sync. Happy looks good on Hayes. I think he is just yummy.

My friend, the brilliant street photographer, Ruben Natal-San Miguel is no stranger to portraits on the fly. He gave the Wow Report amazing shots of RuPaul’s Drag Race season 8 queens and went out for NYC Pride with a renewed love and that fantastic eye. Lots of people take pictures and pride presents MANY opportunities to get out that iPhone, but as a street pro, Ruben really has a special eye that can capture the what is so unique about LGBT community. His love (and theirs) comes through. He had this to say when I asked him about his experience this year,

After 9/11 I became a more observer of the Gay Community. I don’t like crowds anymore. Since the Orlando massacre, which a childhood and best friend of my sister was murdered, all my activism from my ACT UP and AIDS crisis days resurged.

Now, I am involved, donating money, marching and being vocal. My family (23 Puerto Ricans alone) were senselessly murdered and I feel that need to be more and become more active. These photos are to express, the amount of talent, humor, artistry, love and creativity that the LGBT community bring to the world.

We are unique and very special.“

I’ll bring you part 2 of his special report tomorrow. Happy Pride!

I never go out with a preconceived idea. I let the street speak to me.” —Bill Cunningham

Screen Shot 2016-06-26 at 6.38.37 AMWe lost one of the greats yesterday and people in and out of the fashion and publishing world are still reeling from the sad news. It seemed that photographer and New York City icon, Bill Cunningham would ALWAYS be around the next corner shooting whatever the street was telling him to. He was like a yellow taxi cab or the Met, you can’t imagine the city without him. Some of his friends and admirers, including this one, remember him here. They really don’t make them like this anymore. I can just hear him saying, “Aww kid, don’t be sad, I had a good run!

“His company was sought after by the fashion world’s rich and powerful, yet he remained one of the kindest, most gentle and humble people I have ever met. We have lost a legend, and I am personally heartbroken to have lost a friend.” –Arthur Ochs Sulzberger Jr., New York Times’s publisher

“Bill Cunningham, you did us proud, and you set a standard for all Times journalists. About what it means to be independent, to be honorable, to be kind, and to be curious.” –Jason Bernstein, NY Times writer

“I loved seeing Bill Cunningham when I went out. I’m sure I’m not the only one who spent a New York lifetime hoping he just might point the camera my way. I have witnessed countless wanna-be’s trying to sidle into his sights by parading past him repeatedly, but he knew what he wanted, and if you weren’t it, that was that. I told myself that the fact he never photographed me wasn’t because I have no style whatsoever but because I am married to one of the Times art critics, although he did love my wife. Of course, I tried to say hello to him at inappropriate times, just when he was poised on the periphery of an event, waiting for just the right moment.” –Jerry Saltz, New York magazine

“Bill Cunningham got me my first job as a style editor of the SoHo Weekly News in 1979. He’s why I do what I do. He was still there for me when we launched our very first issue of Paper Magazine in 1984. (Here he is with our first issue) And has always been there for us rooting us on ever since. He was the seminal independant. Never did he sell out. And he always respected us for remaining indie. I have so much more to say about this amazing man… RIP dear man. You are an angel. We will all miss you so. So many of us weep.” –Kim Haetreiter, Paper magazine co-founder & editor

“Many years ago when Paper had recently been launched I saw Bill on West Broadway, his camera at the ready as always. It was around the time that Details was being sold and money was in the air. ‘Don’t ever sell,” he cautioned. Creative freedom is the most precious thing he let it be known, his eyes darting about in search of the beautiful. And just as I was about to say something in response, he took off, chasing after a woman, clicking away, her black seam stockings obviously more important than anything I had to say.” –David Hershkovits, Paper magazine co-founder & editor

“There was never a day, rain or shine, a mountain of snow, remarkable heat, or a breezy spring day, that he would not be on a bicycle riding around town…. when I was a fashion editor, my seat would often be beside him. I once begged him to be on my panel when I chaired a ‘Fashion Group’ symposium. When he lost his place at the podium, he began to shake, so I held his hand to calm him down, it passed, and he was just ‘marvelous’ –one of his favorite words.” –Tina Perlmutter, editor, photographer

“The worst slap of all: Bill raising his camera at you, considering the shot, then lowering it without having taken a picture.” –Lucy Sisman, art director

“If you lived in New York City and were on the scene for any length of time, being photographed by Bill was a right of passage. He will not be soon forgotten. The only good thing about this news is that he did what he loved, rode around the city on his bike right until the end. No long illness, or not being able to get out and shoot his city. I’ll just imagine him on his bike somewhere, using that incredible eye on another (very chic) plane.” –Trey Speegle, artist

“I keep thinking of the welcome he’ll receive in heaven (if that’s how things work and I like to think it is) from the ladies of Chez Ninon to Antonio Lopez to Mrs Onassis, Mrs Astor, his favorites Edna Morris and more…” –Billy Norwich, writer

“A devastating loss to the fashion world! There will never be another one like Bill.” –Mickey Boardman, Editorial Director, Paper magazine

“Sometimes when someone dies, more than a life ends. This is one of those times. I am heartbroken for Bill and his friends and family. And for New York. And good taste and gentlemanly elan and style. And keen eyes. And sweetness. Every time I get on my bike I’ll think of him. Or when I see someone on the street who deserves to be observed and appreciated. I’ll miss his smile.

Bill taking a photo of an angel at New York’s Gay Pride parade in 2014. I’ve been thinking of this image tonight. I’ll be thinking of it tomorrow. I hope Bill is still finding some hunky angels to shoot.” –Kevin Sessums, writer

#OnThisGayDay: Lawrence v. Texas

June 26, 2003Lawrence v. Texas

One of the most important and pivotal moments in American Gay History happened 18 years ago, June 25 1998.

John Lawrence and Tyron Garner were arrested in Lawrence’s Houston home and then jailed overnight after police officers responding to a false report found the two men having sex in Lawrence’s bedroom. Lawrence and Garner were convicted of violating Texas’s Homosexual Conduct Law, which made it a crime for people of the same sex to have oral or anal sex, even though those sex acts were legal in Texas for people to engage in with persons of an opposite sex.

Lambda Legal quickly responded. They agreed to represent Lawrence and Garner. Battling for years in the Texas courts, Lamda sought to overturn the criminal convictions, which made the two guys registered “sex offenders” and to have Texas’s archaic law declared unconstitutional. When the highest court in Texas eventually refused to even hear the arguments, the US Supreme Court took on the case.

On this day, June 26, in 2003, in a really stunning victory, the highest court in the land found the Texas Homosexual Conduct Law unconstitutional and established, for the first time ever, that gay citizens share the same fundamental right to private sexual intimacy with another adult that straight people have.

Antiquated sodomy laws have often been used to justify discrimination against gay people. In striking down those laws, this historic ruling removed a major roadblock in the battle for Gay Rights. Gay people would no longer be considered “criminals” because they like getting in on with someone of same sex. Even more important, laws that deny gay people liberty or equal protection can no longer find justification on moral grounds alone. This distinction cannot be overstated when arguing with the haters.

The impact of this landmark case is extraordinary. SCOTUS declared all sodomy laws unconstitutional, putting an end to the sodomy laws that remained on the books in 13 states at the time of the ruling, including laws that criminalized only same-sexual conduct and laws that criminalized oral and anal sex for any consenting adult. SCOTUS also reversed Bowers v. Hardwick, its evil 1986 decision that upheld Georgia’s sodomy law which had been a huge setback to gay people’s fight for equality. The decision’s sweeping language about gay people’s equal rights began a new era of legal respect for LGBTQ citizens of our country. Until last June’s SCOTUS ruling on Marriage Equality, Lawrence v. Texas was considered the most significant Gay Rights breakthrough of our era.

I think I may have to celebrate this historic anniversary with some hot, very legal man sex. How about you?

Comme-des-GarCons-Homme-Plus_ss17_fy28

The theme for Rei Kawakubo‘s Spring 2017 Comme des Garçons show: the Hans Christian Andersen story “The Emperor’s New Clothes.”

It’s the tale of an emperor hoodwinked by two charlatans into paying a king’s ransom for absolutely nothing—the emperor is convinced that he has purchased finery that appears invisible to those who are incompetent, stupid or unfit for office, when in fact he is simply parading through the streets naked.

Kawakubo therefore showed transparent clothing—mostly entirely see-through PVC, like ghost garments, suspending details like collars or buttons around her models’ bodies. And much body was on show, through layers of transparency, while striped cotton poplin had the feel of boxer shorts used for pinched suits, as if outerwear had been X-rayed. (via Vogue)

So yes, lots and lots of see-through shirts and overcoats and trench coats and what-not. Fun and cheeky if you’re a 20 year old with a smashing body, but not very wearable for older, overweight queens, SIGH. Anyway, the real takeaway from the show was the hair – the nutty crown-shaped wigs that the boys sported, that often looked like giant splashes of hair or bowls balancing onto of heads. Really interesting stuff. Ugly, but ugly in away that feels new and slightly transgressive. I’ve never seen anyone do this look before, and that’s rare.

Ms Mojo has compiled a highly debatable list of hottest boy band members that (SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT!) somehow manages to exclude Nick Jonas, Joey McIntyre, Taylor Hanson, Ashley Parker Angel, and all of LFO – like, HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE? The ranking of the boys that they did choose is also highly suspect. I mean (ANOTHER SPOILER ALERT! ANOTHER SPOILER ALERT): I love Harry as much as the next guy, but in what universe is he hotter than Zayne?

Check out the list below and let me know what you think?

Points for including K-Pop god TOP from BigBang – I’ve been crushing on him for yeeeeeeeeears.

Yesterday, James posted Commes de Garcon‘s crown hairstyles for their runway show, which was a nice styling touch. The clothes, for me, were sort of all over the place, although some of the netting would have meshed nicely with Brown’s looks here. You might look at Thom Browne‘s Sring/Summer 2017 collection here and say the same thing. I beg to differ. So does the CFDA, who named him Menswear Designer of the Year. His collections, and especially the styling for the runway shows are always over the top of the top, but all of his clothing –men’s and women’s– are rooted in classical tailoring, with detail upon detail, tongue firmly in chic. Just look at these clothes, it’s not hard to see the humor in this beach paradise theme. (The shark bite pants are my favorite.) Tell us on our Facebook what’s yours? Are they wearable? Depends on where you’re going. Are they brilliant? No doubt.

Talk about a horrifying scene. At family birthday party, a mom fatally shot her two daughters before she was gunned down by police. It happened in Houston, as 42 year-old Christy Sheats exploded with rage, firing at her daughters Madison, 17, and Taylor, 22, as they fled into the street. Her husband pleaded,

“Don’t do this! They’re our kids!”

Police radio traffic captured the drama. The dispatcher was recorded saying:

“There is a subject on location standing over one of the patients that has been shot. She has a gun. The subject went back into the residence apparently to get more ammunition.”

An officer then told dispatch:

“Shots fired! I shot the subject.”

Psychologist Dr. Jeff Gardere says filicide, killing your own children, is one of the most shocking crimes of all.

“This is something that is absolutely shocking and therefore, this isn’t just about someone losing her temper and then killing her daughters. There is something much, much deeper going on. You have to ask yourself, ‘How could this go so wrong?'”

Sheats owned several guns and recently posted an anti-gun control message on her Facebook in March page vowing never to give them up,

“It would be horribly tragic if my ability to protect myself or my family were to be taken away. That’s exactly what Democrats are determined to do by banning semi-automatic handguns.”

And you have to ask, would this have happened if this woman didn’t have a gun? (via AOL)

Alexis Stone

Age: 22

Location: Manchester, England

About:

My first night out in drag was aged 16 with Jodie Harsh at Circus in London. I continued to portray this killer housewife look for a few years, before I started hosting venues in London. Merging my fashion interests and my own clothing brand, I played around with different characters, mainly focusing on killer females from the 90’s. I’ve lived and taken my drag to several countries now, and to Paris, Sweden and New York, which has enabled me to work with some of the finest nightlife and drag entertainers. I’m focusing now on my YouTube channel.
