WOWlebrity Chad Rogers Sends You Into Orbit with His New Video “Rocket Man” UPDATED with Exclusive Quote from Chad!

UPDATED: Chad Rogers just sent us an exclusive quote about the inspiration behind  his new music video:

The motivation for creating my music video in a fun and entertaining style was to inspire people with a simple message: If you follow your dreams anything is possible!

Original Million Dollar Listing Los Angeles star Chad Rogers now has rock star chops to go with his rockin’ body! The internet was abuzz today when Chad debuted his magical eight minute musical opus, “Rocket Man” which he’s been practicing for MONTHS with the help of a skilled instructor. Rogers had complete control of the entire production including the song, the sets, the costumes, and the gorgeous wood nymphs who scamper through the enchanted set.

From SheKnows.com:

The band members, whom Rogers dubbed “Sweet Deception,” were handpicked by him, and the entire video, including the song, set, costumes and models, were imagined and selected by Rogers himself. He had complete control of the video, from the beginning all the way till the final editing and choosing just the right scenes, so that the video would portray exactly the feelings that Rogers wanted it to have. The enchanted forest came to Rogers’ imagination only to exceed his wildest of dreams.

Says Rogers of his musical endeavors:

“Playing guitar and working out are both much-needed releases for me which have contributed to this current record breaking year in real estate. We all need to do other things besides working all the time to be successful. If you don’t find a release for you it’s very likely you will get burnt out which will spill into your work environment. For me it is about creating happiness by doing things that enrich my life and grow me as a person.”

You can watch Chad’s former colleagues on Million Dollar Listing Los Angeles Wednesdays at 10PM on Bravo.

Lamar Odom Update: “It’s Not Looking Good”

TMZ is reporting that Lamar Odom’s condition has deteriorated, with doctor’s giving him a 50/50 chance of survival – but warning the family the longer he remains in the condition he’s in the less likely it is that he will recover.

As of Thursday morning, our sources say Lamar has shown no signs of consciousness or improvement. We’re told 4 organs, including his kidneys, continue to fail. Our sources say doctors have been clear … the fact that Lamar is not getting better significantly reduces his chances of survival.

Sources tell TMZ, Lamar did indeed squeeze Khloe‘s hand Wednesday night, which gave everyone hope, but Thursday morning doctors are saying it well could have been an involuntary movement.

Says a source: “The doctors are concerned it has been too long that he’s been in this condition and now it’s not looking good.”

Another TMZ item wonders if Lamara was grossly overcharged at the Nevada brothel he was found at and if his cash was pilfered from his body while he was overdosing.

As we reported, the Love Ranch charged Lamar $75,000 for his 3-day stay and charged it to his credit card. We’re told one of Lamar’s business people and someone from the Kardashian camp asked Ranch owner Dennis Hof for a full accounting, suspecting they fleeced him.

Ranch owner Dennis Hof tells TMZ, Lamar paid for 2 women to be with him 24/7, and it adds up.

Lamar’s people and the Kardashians are also suspicious because Lamar’s personal effects were returned to his bodyguard with no cash … not a single dollar. We’re told the bodyguard thinks money was taken from the backpack, because he says Lamar always carried large sums of cash.

All of which is really distasteful. To clear your palate, head over to HuffPo which has collected stories from fellow NBA stars speaking Lamar’s legendary kindness and generosity.

This was one of those songs that I’ve heard a million times, but never ac LISTENED to until I heard it on last night’s episode of American Horror Story Hotel. I LOVE the music chosen for the show. And Ryan Murphy has already turned me BACK on to “If You Were Here” by the Thompson Twins when it was played in the first episode of Scream Queens. Anyway…”Don’t Stop the Dance” by Bryan Ferry was played during the fashion show scene during last nights AHS. It’s so chic. Keep it up, Ryan!

I’m guessing you already know. But in case you missed out, last night’s brand-new episode of Big Freedia: Queen Of Bounce was full of T. Let’s go ahead and re-live the best moments with these GIFs!

1. The episode started with some heavy stuff, portraying Freedia and Devon in couples therapy working out their issues.

01-devon-huh

2. Legendary Ms Tee made her return to the show to record her collaboration with Freedia, “Good Times” (which we need ASAP!)

3. The episode’s most touching moment this week was when Flash sought out to meet his brother for the first time, and he showed up (unlike his Mom last season.) Then, they bonded over their musical talent in the park and we were all in tears.

07-flash-dance

Flash’s fans were excited too:

4. Freedia went to see a voice coach to regain her voice, and the coach had some interesting ideas about vocal warm ups (LOL).

Woman Glues Her Eye Shut With Fingernail Glue on Accident in Florida

Oh, Florida. Doesn’t this sort-of sound like an Appalachian Emergency Room skit from Saturday Night Live?A woman in Lantana, FL glued her eye shut with fingernail glue after a man blew debris into her eye with a leaf blower. Katherine Gaydos was walking around, minding her own business when she walked by a man with a leaf blower. He blew the debris into her eye, so she asked the man to reach into her purse and grab her Visine. Instead of grabbing the eye drops, the man accidentally grabbed fingernail glue in Katherine’s purse and poured it into her eyes. Katherine said, “As soon as I felt it burn, I closed my eye and screamed and called 911.” The glue immediately glued her eyes shut. I have SOOO many questions. Did Katherine KNOW this man? If not, why did she allow him to reach into her purse while she was blinded? He could have robbed her BLIND. Ha! Could the man read?

ABC Breaking News | Latest News Videos

“It was the same office, but a different doctor,” Katherine said. “He put Lidocaine above and below my eye and just pulled on it until it finally opened. He said I should get my sight back, and not have permanent damage.” All right. Well be safe out there, girl!

I’ve been thinking about all of the amazing places I’d like to visit like the Great Wall of China, Angkor Wat, the Great Pyramids and tons others. We all have an expiration date (thank God we don’t know WHEN) but in the best-case scenario, I’ve got another 3-4 decades. And as anyone with grandparents knows, at a certain point, you really CAN’T travel anymore, so even if you get to one bucket-list place every year, you won’t see the whole world. Trip Advisor recommends these spots as a good place to start. So, stop dreaming, pick one and make a plan!

#BornThisDay: Singer/Songwriter, Laura Nyro

October 18, 1947Laura Nyro:

They say a woman’s place is to wait & serve under the veil, submissive & dear. But I think my place is in a ship from space to carry me the hell out of here…”

It would never have happened to me when I was young. I was a fearless performer as a youth. I actually became more reticent as I got older. Some performers just shun the spotlight & find that back road to success. Laura Nyro was a perfect example. Crippled by chronic stage fright, she never found more than a cult audience with her solo career; but when her songs were covered by Barbra Streisand, Frank Sinatra, The 5th Dimension, Three Dog Night or Blood, Sweat & Tears, they effortlessly reached the Top 10 on the charts. Somehow, those reinterpretations brought her material closer to the audience’s musical preoccupations in the late 1960s & early 1970s.

You might have missed Nyro’s obituary when she left this world. Her death didn’t garner the type of media coverage that pop icons like Elvis Presley, John Lennon or Janis Joplin had when they left this world. In fact, you may not even know with her name. That is a shame.

But, if like me, you were listening to the radio from 1967 to 1971, you know her impassioned, iconoclastic music. Nyro was still in her teens when she wrote: Wedding Bell Blues, And When I Die, & Stoney End. By the time she was 21 years old, Nyro had already produced a meaningful & large catalog of songs, a stronger body of work than most pop songwriters have in a full lifetime. But, she never had a hit record as herself.

Nyro was not only a distinctive songwriter who created her own world with her music, she also possessed a delicious vocal style, soulful, with deep feeling, fused with Blues, Jazz, Gospel, Folk & Broadway.

I wonder where The 5th Dimension would have been without her songs. That pop-soul group scored big hits with Stoned Soul Picnic, Wedding Bell Blues, Blowin’ Away, Sweet Blindness, & Save The Country. Blood, Sweat & Tears took And When I Die to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 Charts in 1969. Three Dog Night hit #1 with Eli’s Comin’. Streisand had a #1 hit with Stoney End in 1971, using that song to increase her hipness quotient & prove that she was not just a singer of showtunes.

Nyro was born Laura Nigro in 1947, the daughter of a jazz trumpeter. She began playing music as a little girl, read poetry & was introduced to the music of classical composers Ravel & Debussy by her mother. She attended Manhattan High School Of Music & Art, she was a fan of a wide range of music, from Dylan to Coltrane, Gospel to Doo-Wop, Burt Bacharach to The Supremes.

Nyro’s first album More Than A New Discovery (1966) was recorded when she was just 19 years old (Madonna was 25 years old when she released her first album). It was a remarkable debut, but brought her little attention as a performer.

A little known music agent, who I shall call David Geffen for legal reasons, saw her performance at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, where she was booed off the stage. He quit his job & became her manager. He got her a deal with Columbia Records & she recorded her next album Eli & The 13th Confession in 1968. The critics liked it. But, the hits came from the cover versions of the tunes by The 5th Dimension & Three Dog Night. Nyro’s originals went unnoticed by most of the public, except for listeners of extreme savvy taste, like me.

New York Tendaberry (1969) was Nyro’s only album to ever reach the Top 40. It included 2 more songs that The 5th Dimension covered: Time & Love, & Save The Country. This album gave her a cult following & foreshadowed the whole introspective singer/songwriter movement that emerged in the early 1970s. Ironically, Nyro’s own bestselling single was a cover of Carole King & Gerry Goffin‘s Up On The Roof.

Nyro released 2 more albums before & then left the biz in 1971 at of 24 years old. But, after 4 years away, she returned to the studio & periodically released new albums for the next 2 decades. In 1997, a retrospective boxed-set was being released by Columbia: Stoned Soul Picnic: The Best Of Laura Nyro. Nyro selected the tracks & approved the final project. She lived to see its release & said that she was pleased with the project.

Nyro was taken from this world by that damn cancer in 1997. She was only 49 years old; the same ovarian cancer that had claimed the life of her mother at the very same age. She left behind a partner of 18 years, artist Maria Desidero.

A tribute album, Time & Love: The Music Of Laura Nyro, with Nyro’s songs performed by 14 women singers & groups, including Phoebe Snow, Suzanne Vega, Roseanne Cash, & Jane Siberry was issued shortly after Nyro was gone.

Nyro’s huge influence on other musicians has been acknowledged by: Janis Ian, Joni Mitchell, Melissa Manchester, Rickie Lee Jones, Steely Dan, Todd Rundgren, Sandra Bernhard & Elton John. She is Bette Midler’s favorite singer. Barry Manilow lists her amazing album, & my own personal favorite Nyro LP, Christmas & The Beads Of Sweat, on his Desert Island Discs. The juicy Jackson Browne tune That Girl Could Sing is about Nyro. John & Elvis Costello discussed Nyro’s significant influence on both of them during the premiere episode of Costello’s interview show Spectacle (2012) on the Sundance Channel.

When I was a callow youth, I loved Nyro beyond all reason. Her songs are very much a part of my musical consciousness. The Husband is a big fan. If you remember these songs in their hit versions by other artists, it is fascinating to hear Nyro’s own interpretations. If you’re too young to remember these songs from AM radio, you will be knocked out by the variety & depth of her vision. Listening to her music more than 45 years later, I am transported back to that amazing time. I don’t know why more people didn’t discover the singer/songwriter behind the great melodies & lyrics. Stoned Soul Picnic captures the sweet, hopeful trippiness of the late 196os better than most protest music of the time:

“There’ll be trains of blossoms & there’ll be trains of music. There’ll be trains of trust, trains of gold & dust…”

#LegendaryLES: A Preview of “The Lowline”, NYC’s Future Underground Park

The Lowline will occupy a 116-year-old abandoned trolley terminal below Delancey Street on Lower East Side that’s been used for storage since 1948.

The Lower East Side (LES) and East Village (like the rest of New York City) are packed with history, cool stories and drama. Today I’m doing a mini-salute to the areas with three posts about a new show Sister’s Follies at Abrons Arts, the legendary 80s club, The Pyramid and the proposed new Lowline Park.

In New York City, we’ve been hearing about this future underground park for years, but now it looks like it’s going to become a reality thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign, the team behind the project just opened the Lowline Lab in the former Essex Fair Retail Market. Just 1,200 square feet, about 5% of the future park, will be open to illustrate the technology involved.

Visitors to the Lowline Lab will see wooden terraces, metal canopies and live plants all bathed in actual, subterranean sunlight. The light reaches the verdant underground space through an optical system invented by James Ramsey, the man responsible for the Lowline. Along with co-founder and Executive Director Dan Barasch, Ramsey started laying plans for an urban underground park in 2008. Polycarbonate tubes outfitted with lenses and mirrors bring the sun’s rays from the roof to the lab.

Demonstrating just how much vegetation the park will be able to support, over 60 species of actual plants are currently growing at the site including pineapples, mint, strawberries and thyme. An anodized aluminum canopy, a combination of hexagonal and triangular panels form a shapable canopy that can adapt to the needs of what’s growing in the lab. Light is piped into the plumbing system through mirrored collectors, which focus the sunlight into a concentrated beam that’s 30 times brighter than ambient sunlight. Getting the light underground is one thing, but you can’t just blast a garden with a concentrated beam of sunlight. A set of lenses is embedded into the canopy, softening the light, and then a chandelier-like set of reflectors further distributes it. Even though the eventual park will comprise three underground city blocks, there will be no artificial light at all.

Expected to open sometime in 2020, the 1.5 acre Lowline Park will completely transform a former trolley terminal running under Delancey Street (entrance at 140 Essex St.) that hasn’t been used since 1948. The expected cost is between $60 and $75 million. The Lowline Lab is open to the public on weekends now, and will also hold special events in the coming months. You can find out more here.

sisters-follies-2-update

The Lower East Side (LES) and East Village (like the rest of New York City) are packed with history, cool stories and drama. I’m doing a mini-salute today to the areas with three posts about the proposed new Lowline Park, the legendary 80s club, The Pyramid and the new show Sister’s Follies.

The non-profit theater, Abrons Arts has been going for 100 years now, and it commissioned Sisters’ Follies: Between Two Worlds for its centennial. It’s a musical ghost story about the two sisters, Alice and Irene Lewisohn who in 1915 started the Neighborhood Playhouse. Alice (1883-1972) was an actress and an associate of Carl Jung’s in Zurich and Irene (1892-1944), who specialized in dance, was one of the founders of what is now the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. (There’s a funny dig at Anna Wintour.)

The sister duo is played by Joey Arias and Julie Atlas Muz and the show starts off with the “wow factor” of having the them fly through the air as ghosts and a beyond-the-grave sibling rivalry is set-up. The two are projected onto the faces of comedy and tragedy on the proscenium arch of the stage to set up each new production, recreated in the most imaginative way by Twist’s wizardry. Alice and Irene fight their way through years of obscure productions, each trying to outdo the other. There’s a bit of Death Becomes Her to the whole thing and at times, knowing Joey as I have for decades, it seemed as though that he was making up half of his lines as he went along. (In fact, the show’s script is a collaboration by Mr. Twist, Ms. Muz and Mr. Arias.) Joey is a force to be reckoned with onstage and off, but Ms. Muz held her own and then some. She does a very funny (topless) take-off on modern dance which was the most fully realized of all of the set pieces. There were contemporary references made as asides and Joey’s Midnight at the Oasis number –complete with dancing camel, horse and snake– brought the show closer to the present day. Not really knowing the basic storyline, the history lesson was a bit fuzzy around the edges, but once the story unfolded through each new vintage production staging, you were baited by the dazzling staging to anticipate what would come next. The whole thing was really a low-tech, big production in a tiny theater and a behind-the-scenes video of how it’s done would be fascinating. It all climaxed in a cemetery wedding scene and as Ben Brantly said in the New York Times review of the show…

“The graveyard mise-en-scène he has come up with for the sisters’ interpretation of the Yiddish classic ‘The Dybbuk, or Between Two Worlds’ is a spook-house connoisseur’s delight. In the best of all possible worlds (or two worlds), New York City would give Mr. Twist an unlimited budget to do up the town for Halloween in haute-scary chic.”

Basil Twist

Basil Twist

The show’s main magician, Basil Twist, is the internationally renowned director and puppeteer, who was recently featured on CBS Sunday Morning and just got the MacArthur “genius” grant –which, by the way, comes with $625,000, bringing our world lots more genius productions like this one, no doubt.

The fantastic morphing cast includes Kate Brehm, Lute Breuer, Chris De Ville, Ben Elling, Jonothon Lyons, Katie Melby, David Ojala, Jessica Scott, Rachael Shane, and Ashley Winkfield. and the creative team is lighting designer Poe Saegusa, costume designer Machine Dazzle, sound design by A-Key, projection designer Daniel Brodie and Gabriel Aronson, and Thomas Wilfred‘s CLAVILUX Recreation by Joshua Light Show. The show has just extended its world-premiere run through November 7. You can get tickets here.

The Lower East Side (LES) and East Village (like the rest of New York City) are packed with history, cool stories and drama. I’m doing a mini-salute to the area with three posts about proposed new Lowline Park, the new show Sister’s Follies at Abrons Arts and the legendary 80s club, The Pyramid.

Secrets of the Great Pyramid: The Pyramid Cocktail Lounge as Cultural Laboratory is curated by Brian Butterick (aka Hattie Hathaway) at Howl! Happening Gallery. Secrets of the Great Pyramid is an exhibit that pays tribute to the legacy of the famed 80s nightclub, named for the stepped pyramid motif above the entrance of the bar, the Pyramid really was an epicenter of the EV & LES artistic communities. Along with other clubs that came before and after, like the Mudd Club, CBGB, Danceteria, Area and others, it sparked a cultural revolution in music, dance, theater, drag, video, fine art, performance art, activism, feminism and LBGT politics. The opening last night ast night was, as it advertised, was…

“…more than a reunion, a retrospective, or a forced march through niche history, Secrets Of the Great Pyramid shows how a simple cultural laboratory continues to resonate in Post-Millennial America.”

On December 10, 1981, Ronald Reagan had been president for less than a year when a group of New York art-school flunkies threw a party at a Polish/Ukrainian dive bar on Avenue A in New York’s East Village. Ed Koch was mayor, the East Village was nearly in flames, the street drug trade was rampant, but rents were cheap! (I was working at Vogue at the time, when I moved to Avenue B in ’82 and First Avenue was viewed as the farthest east any sane person would dare go. When I told an editor at the magazine I was moving there, they grabbed my arm to say, “No! You CAN’T! You’ll be murdered!”)

Featured in this three-week only exhibit is a recreation of the legendary Pyramid with artwork and visuals from deceased trailblazers and working artists embraced by the club along with ephemera and ancient artifacts. (To my shock an issue of Straight To Hell magazine with me on the cover, was in a glass case below the piece I contributed as a tongue-in-cheek remembrance of our long-gone pals, Forget Me.) Also included in the exhibition is work by Stephen Tashjian, Greer Lankton, David Wojnarowicz, Laura Levine, Tanya Ransom, Alice O’Malley, Jayne County, Connie Fleming, Chris Tanner, Keiko Bonk, Frederick Nunley, Lynn Grabowski, Antony/Blacklips, Andé Whyland, Billy Beyond, Nelson Sullivan, Richard Oszust, Jack Pierson, John Kelly, Flloyd, Dug Wah and more…

Last night was also a revisiting of first Sunday night party at the club, called Cafe Iguana. Part Weimar-era Cabaret, part cracked Broadway last night was held together by host Heather Litteer, who was channeling the late Ann Craig, Iguana’s original MC. Alternative Theatre founder Kestutis Nakas flew in from Chicago to regale us with what we were like and the “non gender-specific” Seattle burlesque giant, Paula Now killed the crowd with her strip tease to You’re Gonna Love Me from Dreamgirls when she tossed her wig and it landed PERFECTLY on the crystal chandelier. John Kelly closed the performance with amazing rendition of What Makes a Man and said to me after the show, that when Paula’s wig landed on the chandelier.

“… the night was MADE.”

Artist Chris Tanner was in beautiful voice contrasting a raucous and very interactive performance by Jack Waters & Peter Cramer who had us all doing keigels to warm up before dancing on the bar which everyone who had anything to with the Pyramid has done, including our’s truly in my pajamas.

I saw SO many old friends (and thankfully some I successfully avoided!) and who flew in just for the night; Downtown PR legend, Susan Martin, artist Izar Patkin, performer Nora Burns, Pyramid regular Frederick Nunerly, photographer Janette Beckman, the legendary Connie Girl, Perfidia, Debra Ortega, Maripol, Carlo McCormick, Mark Phred (Hapi Phace) and the list goes on and on…

Today, Sunday October 18th at 3 PM is a panel discussion moderated by Hattie Hathaway with Victor Mendolia (Anonymous? Productions), Kevin Malony (TWEED TheaterWorks), Hapi Phace, Kesutis Nakas, Paula Now, John Jeserun, Iris Rose and more. I’m going to miss it but come next Friday for Whispers, and there will be a surprise performance, not on the schedule. Scroll down for more info and some Instagram vids.

Blake’s Snake of the Day: Super Venomous Sea Snakes in California!

For the first time in over thirty years, a yellow-bellied sea snake has washed ashore on the Pacific coast of California. The snake was spotted in Oxnard, CA – about 60 miles from the World of Wonder Headquarters in Hollywood. And it’s all El Niño’s fault. The unusual warmer water we’ve had in Southern California is similar to the warmer water the yellow-bellied sea snakes normally call home in areas of the Pacific and Indian Oceans. In fact, the last time this species was seen in California was during an El Niño year.

Bob Forbes, a resident of Oxnard who stumbled across the snake, took photos before putting the snake into a bucket with water and taking it home. He said, “I didn’t want some young kid not knowing what it was … pick it up and possibly get injured.” The snake died soon after. Dr. Paul Barber, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at UCLA, told Huffington Post:

Because the water is so warm here now, these snakes can swim, hunt and reproduce just like they could in the northern part of their tropical range. Simply put, they are here because the warmer El Niño conditions have expanded the range of suitable environmental conditions for this snake. This has also happened with other marine species like hammerhead sharks.

He said the snakes will likely go back to where they came from when the water cools back down. Dr. Barber also said that even though their venom is “very, very potent,” they aren’t naturally aggressive and only bite if they are handled or feeling defensive. If you see one, take a photo and notify Heal the Bay, but DON’T TOUCH!
