The day before he met with (the infamous) Kim Davis, Pope Francis also met privately with his openly gay friend and his partner. Yayo Grassi told CNN on Friday that he and his partner of 19 years and several other friends had a visit with the Pope at the Vatican Embassy on 23 September. It was arranged personally by the Pope. Grass said;

“Three weeks before the trip, he called me on the phone and said he would love to give me a hug.

He has never been judgmental. He has never said anything negative.”

YouTube video of the visit shows the Pope greeting his friend with a hug then being introduced to the rest of the group including Grassi’s partner Iwan whose last name was not disclosed.

The Pope has come under fire for meeting Davis and the Vatican issued a statement Friday clarifying the Davis visit saying she was one of…

“several dozen persons who had been invited by the Nunciature to greet him as he prepared to leave Washington for New York City. Such brief greetings occur on all papal visits and are due to the Pope’s characteristic kindness and availability. The only real audience granted by the Pope at the Nunciature was with one of his former students and his family.”

That former student was none other than Yayo. Is Grassi troubled by the Pope’s stance against same-sex marriage?

“Obviously he is the pastor of the church and he has to follow the church’s teachings. But as a human being he understands all kinds of situations, and he is open to all kinds of people, including those with different sexual characteristics.”

That’s one interpretation, anyway. Watch. It’s a very sweet meeting.

Today, the Vatican fired a monsignor who came out as gay on the eve of a big meeting of the world’s bishops to discuss church outreach to gays, divorcees and more traditional Catholic families. Krzysztof Charamsa, a mid-level official in its doctrine office, came out in newspaper interviews in Italy and Poland saying he was happy and proud to be a gay priest, and that he was in love with a man whom he identified as his boyfriend Eduard, above. Vatican spokesman, Rev. Federico Lombardi, said in a statement;

“The decision to make such a pointed statement on the eve of the opening of the synod appears very serious and irresponsible, since it aims to subject the synod assembly to undue media pressure.”

Charamsa, 43, initially planned a press conference in front of the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith‘s office, but moved it to central Rome after the Vatican’s action.

“I came out. This is a very personal, difficult and tough decision in the Catholic church’s homophobic world.”

He has written a book in Italian and Polish to “lay bare” his experience “in front of all those who want to confront me.”

Charamsa told the Polish daily Gazeta Wyborcza that he was motivated to make his sexual orientation public by hate mail that he received after publicly criticizing a right-wing Polish priest who is strongly anti-gay.

“I have to say who I am. I am a gay priest. I am a happy and proud gay priest.”

As a result, Charamsa can no longer work at the Vatican or its pontifical universities but despite his dismissal, Charamsa remains a priest, although Lombardi hinted that his superiors might take further action.

As part of a radical redesign that begins next March, the print edition of Playboy will no longer feature nude women. The reason? All the sex on the internet has eliminated the need to actually buy a magazine see a naked woman, duh.

From The New York Times:

Its executives admit that Playboy has been overtaken by the changes it pioneered. “That battle has been fought and won,” said Scott Flanders, the company’s chief executive. “You’re now one click away from every sex act imaginable for free. And so it’s just passé at this juncture.”

For a generation of American men, reading Playboy was a cultural rite, an illicit thrill consumed by flashlight. Now every teenage boy has an Internet-connected phone instead. Pornographic magazines, even those as storied as Playboy, have lost their shock value, their commercial value and their cultural relevance.

The magazine will still feature “pretty women in provocative poses,” but the overall effect will be “more PG-13.”

Playboy.com today offered a tongue-in-cheek sneak peek at the new non-nude playboy covers that we can expect to see in the coming months, including women in bee-keeping outfits, women in haz-mat suits, and women in full armor (see below).

Beginning on the first day of school next August, students in Texas will be able to carry concealed firearms into public universities under the state’s new campus carry law. But this isn’t sitting well with one group of students. Namely, #CocksNotGlocks protest organizer Jessica Jin who came up with the idea after listening to a talk radio show. She told the Houston Chronicle:

I need this proliferation of dildos to offer people a visual representation of what it would be like if we all carried guns. It should look ridiculous to you. That is the point. This is America. If guns and bloodshed don’t wake people up, a public celebration of sexuality may just do the trick. I felt a lot of frustration at those who were still trying to explain away or make excuses for this repeated pattern of violence and said to myself, ‘Man, these people are such dildos.’

Jin found out you could get in more trouble next August carrying a dildo onto campus than you would carrying a gun. She said on the group’s Facebook event called Campus (DILDO) Carry:

The State of Texas has decided that it is not at all obnoxious to allow deadly concealed weapons in classrooms, however it DOES have strict rules about free sexual expression, to protect your innocence. You would receive a citation for taking a DILDO to class before you would get in trouble for taking a gun to class. Heaven forbid the penis. You’re carrying a gun to class? Yeah well I’m carrying a HUGE DILDO… Just about as effective at protecting us from sociopathic shooters, but much safer for recreational play.

At New York Comic Con, NewNowNext‘s intrepid reporter Matteo Lane hunt down the hunks of Teen Wolf Tyler Posey, Dylan Sprayberry, and Cody Christian (and creator Jeff Davis) to ask them the important questions –like what they think “wolf” means in gay slang. Do YOU even know? (I didn’t).

We all know that there are a few “sure bets” in this year’s Best Actress race – among them Cate Blanchett for Carol, Jennifer Lawrence for Joy, Carey Mulligan for Suffragette, Brie Larson for Room, Saoirse Ronan for Brooklyn and maaaaaybe Julianne Moore for Freeheld. Indiewire has come up with a list of underdog hopefuls, though, who also deserve your Oscar consideration.

Charlotte Rampling, 45 Years

Ever since “45 Years” won her the Silver Bear for acting at the Berlin Film Festival in February, buzz has been building for the Academy to finally honor Charlotte Rampling — indisputably one of the world’s greatest living actresses. She’s tremendous in Andrew Haigh’s study of a couple (Rampling and Tom Courtenay, also fantastic) whose 45 year wedding anniversary approaches as some of their old relationship history resurfaces. Switching it up from the book that inspired the film (David Constantine’s “In Another Country”), Haigh tells the story from Rampling’s character Kate’s perspective — and it leads to a genuine master class in performance. If anyone on this list has a real shot at an Oscar nod, it’s probably Rampling. Voters just need to make sure they see it.

Kitana Kiki Rodriguez and Mya Taylor, Tangerine

The stories of transgender people have helped a lot of straight actors find awards season glory over the years. But wouldn’t it be nice if an actual transperson got a shot? Oscar voters can’t take all the blame. The amount of trans performers that have been given the material to warrant Oscar consideration is pretty much zero — until now, at least. Sean Baker’s “Tangerine” — which should end up at the top of many year-end top ten lists — is gearing up an Oscar campaign for actresses Mya Taylor and Kitana Kiki Rodriguez. They’re just as worthy (if not much more) as sure-fire nominee Eddie Redmayne, who plays a transwoman in “The Danish Girl.” Oscar voters will finally no longer have the excuse that there are “no great performances by trans actors to nominate”; they just need to become well aware of that fact between now and January.

Sarah Silverman, I Smile Back

Anyone who questions Sarah Silverman’s capabilities as a dramatic actress has probably not yet seen Adam Salky’s “I Smile Back.” Playing a drug-addicted housewife suffering from depression and compulsive behavior, Silverman (who showed signs of this promise in Sarah Polley’s “Take This Waltz”) is a full-on revelation. At times brutally raw, her performance transcends an occasionally flawed script and offers one of the truest depictions of addiction found on any screen in 2015. “Sarah Silverman, Oscar nominee” still sounds like a tall order, but at least make sure you go out and see “Smile” when it’s released in theaters later this month.

Blythe Danner, I’ll See You In My Dreams

At 72, Blythe Danner has never been nominated for an Oscar during her five decades in the business (though she does have two Emmys and two Tonys, so you don’t have to feel that sorry for her). Could that change with Brett Haley’s “I’ll See You In My Dreams,” a little indie that unexpectedly grossed $7.4 million this summer? Danner is endlessly charming in the film, playing a widow who forms a friendship with a young pool maintenance man (Martin Starr). Anyone who pops in a screener — one of the first to get out to voters — will recognize that any suggestion Danner would be a “sentimental” or “career” nomination is ageist bull. This is an actress at the top of her game, who just so happens to be in her seventies.

It’s a new New Order song, “Restless” – the first single off their forthcoming album, Music Complete – and the fabulous, must-see music video features King Arthur as a hot, shirtless twink at a wild, homoerotic bacchanalia. Says Pitchfork: “Directed and produced by NYSU, the clip recalls the tale of King Arthur by way of Party Monster, with swords and stones giving way to sex, glitter, dancing, and violence.” YES! The song harkens back to their earlier dance roots, like 1989’s Technique. Bernard Sumner, New Order’s famously private lead singer, recently told Out magazine:

“By the late ’90s I was going to clubs and partying like crazy. I’d eaten too much dance music. And dance music also became very compartmentalized in the ’90s. I didn’t like that because it meant rules, which meant fools taking away my ability to do what I wanted to do. There was also pressure because we’d made ‘Blue Monday, which was massive, and I felt every record after that had to reinvent the wheel, which is impossible. I just needed a break from it all. But now the time felt right to return to synthesizers and beats and electronic music.”

They sang this song – “Youth of the Nation.” Five years after that song was released in 2001 Katy Perry, then known as Katy Hudson, sang back-up vocals for the group and even appeared in their video for “Goodbye For Now.” She also performed with the band on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. You’ll remember, Katy started her career as a gospel/Christian singer. And now you know!

Aydian Dowling came THISCLOSE to appearing on the cover of Men’s Health, as one of five finalists in a recent cover competition. He lost out to firefighter Tim Boniface, who he congratulated on Facebook like the gentleman he is, and still gets to appear in a spread in the magazine and on a special commemorative cover (see, below).

“Aydian got us thinking about what it means to be a man in 2015,” Men’s Health Editor-in-Chief Bill Phillips says. “He’s become a leading voice of the transgender community and we feel privileged to share his story and to count him as a member of the Men’s Health family.”

Writing on Facebook, Dowling said:

“As some of you may already know, I did not get the title of 2015 Mens Health Ultimate Guy. Of course I hold feelings of disappointment for what could have been an amazing opportunity for our visibility as a community.

“The work we have put in the last 6 months was and is still completely relevant to our movement to full Transgender Rights and Equality. I would like to fully congratulate the winner – Tim, and ALL the other guys who shared this amazing journey with me! For their dedication to their communities and for the new family we have created. I would also like to Thank each and every one of the over 72 THOUSAND people who voted a Transman to the Number 1 spot on the Readers Choice List!

“Please do remember that this fight for Transgender rights, inclusivity, and visibility is not over! Construction workers in Chillicothe, Ohio, came across a dead woman hanging from a fence and naturally assumed it was a Halloween decoration, because, well, of course they did. Decorations have gotten waaaaaay too realistic lately, haven’t they? Turns out it wasn’t. It was an actual dead woman. Murdered and left on a post for passers-by to see. Police Chief Keith Washburn says the woman—31-year-old Rebecca Cade (below)—died of blunt-force injuries to her head and neck. A bloody rock “the size of a grapefruit” was found nearby.

“I thought somebody was playing a prank on the construction workers and I told my daughter it was just a dummy,” one neighbor told the Columbus Dispatch. “It was so awful that I thought the prank went too far.”

A 27-year-old area man, Donnie Cochenour Jr., has allegedly confessed and is currently behind bars on a $2 million bond. (via Gawker, via UpNorthLive)
