Sam Smith is the everything right now! After laying down vocals on Disclosure’s hit track Latch back in 2012, the sultry Brit has released a couple of heart-wrenching tunes that co-sign the sentiment of Adele and echo the isolation of Antony and the Johnsons. Check out his latest video Stay With Me, the third release from upcoming album In The Lonely Hour, out May 26.

These one-of-a-kind pieces were given to Françoise Gilot, the mother of two of Picasso’s children, Claude and Paloma. Gilot later passed down the pieces to Carole Mallory, the model, actress, and author who was engaged to Claude in the 1960s. In “Life With Picasso,” Gilot describes how Picasso, with the help of Dr. Chatagnier, a dentist, made gold and silver jewelry through the lost wax process. “In all Pablo made about 10 necklaces… I thought they were all very nice except one, a rather heavy head of a satyr, in silver.” As it turned out, that satyr pendant (pictured below, left) fetched the most. $153,000. A round silver “sun” pendant brought in $141,000, while this silver brooch, with a drawing of Claude sold for $92,250. Each one smashed its pre-sale estimate of $15,000 to $20,000. “After a hotly competitive bidding contest for each, all three went home with a single purchaser. We’re pleased to see these works of art remain together,” said Gloria Lieberman, of Skinner. Just imagine if they were gold!? A Cement Factory Becomes A Cathedral Of Architectural Splendor

Ricardo Bofill conversion cement factory Architecture Ricardo Bofill conversion cement factory Architecture Forty years ago, architect Ricardo Bofill found a disused cement factory, an industrial complex from the turn of the century consisting of over 30 silos, subterranean galleries and huge machine rooms. He decided to transform it into the head office of his firm, Taller de Arquitectura. The factory was partially in ruins and was a laundry list of surrealist elements: stairs that climbed up to nowhere, mighty reinforced concrete structures that sustained nothing, pieces of iron hanging in the air, huge empty spaces filled up with magic. The torn down many of the silos and once the spaces had been redefined the process began of adaptation began. Eight of the silos remained. They became offices, a models laboratory, archives, a library, a projections room and a gigantic space known as “The Cathedral”, used for exhibitions, concerts and a whole range of cultural functions. The complex stands in the midst of gardens with eucalyptus, palms, olive trees and cypresses, like the set of fantastic movie that is difficult to tell if it is set in the past or in the future. I love reclaimed spaces. My ex and I adapted a turn-of-the-century gothic revival church into a home and eight years ago I bought a converted barn that I now live in, when I’m not in the city. I spend as much time as I can there (was just there for three weeks!) But I have to say, if I had my choice of all of the spaces on earth I could live, I think this might just be at the top of my list. I think could live here 1000 years and never tire of it. Interview: Alan Cumming’s Return to Cabaret, Decadence & Deviance

the Good Wife Studio 54 my chiffon is wet Michelle Williams Cabaret Broadway Alan Cumming

It’s been almost two decades since Tony Award-winning actor Alan Cumming slayed audiences with his portrayal of the over-the-top Emcee in the Broadway musical Cabaret. Now, at 49, he’s reprising the role in NYC at Studio 54. I  got a chance to speak with the acclaimed actor of stage and screen (the Good Wife rocks!!!) between previews for Cabaret and his grueling tv filming schedule. He spoke about how his hot body is adjusting to doing moves he hasn’t done in ages, the significance of his effeminate character on and off stage, and the difference between being a pragmatic gay and a self-hating one.

Paisley Dalton: What’s different for you in this production of Cabaret, compared to the 1998 show?

Alan Cumming: The world has changed and I’ve changed. I feel older! It’s interesting to come back. Your muscle memory starts to kick in. It’s more of a challenge. I’m still filming The Good Wife at the same time. That takes its toll. But I’m getting into the groove.

Dalton: You play the role Emcee..who is characterized as an effeminate deviant. Are effeminate gay guys fully accepted today, or considered deviants?

Cumming: No! They’re not! Within the gay community, it’s very self-hating about more effeminate guys. That’s something we need to look at, and be more accepting of everybody! In terms of the play, the character is both the symbol of decadence and hedonism…the spectrum of sexuality, gender and confusion. He also leads the audience. They like the world he’s from…all the decadence. The play teaches people how easily terribly persecuting governments can slowly, but very effectively, take over.

Dalton: Is being “Out” but not “Out loud” the current decadence?

Cumming: For some people, it’s easier to deal with a nice gay man in a suit than a nice gay man in a wig and glitter. You have to be pragmatic at certain times. I get that. We all want to belong. There are more options for gay people now. You can live in the suburbs with two kids. But those people become a bit self-hating of those who started the [gay rights] Movement…the drag queens and the trans community.

Dalton: Have you been to the Kit Kat Club in Berlin?

Cumming: I have!!! It is like a dance club with sex! I didn’t walk in thinking I was going to see people singing songs  (laughs). I like Berlin very much. There’s NO shame! You do everything backwards. You can have sex with someone in a bar, then have a drink, then go for dinner. It’s like gym culture with ejaculation!

Dalton: Where do you hang out in NYC for camp fun?

Cumming: I would go to My Chiffon Is Wet of course (laughs…full disclaimer: It’s my party..hehe), on Thursday nights, or Susanne Bartsch’s Sunday Service, or Westgay on Tuesdays. I like that it’s not just men only at these places…they mix it up.

Dalton: What kind of “boy body” is decadent for you?

Cumming: People who are comfortable with their body…their confidence. An understanding that they are sexy, but not aggressive about it. That can be a whole gamut of people. If they’re too perfect, that can be a real turn-off… like if somebody has a look like their head has been photoshopped onto an Abercrombie model. I really find chiseled bodies disturbing.

Dalton: Are you sexy?

Cumming: YES!!!

Cabaret starts April 24 in NYC. Get More info HERE!

I’ve unearthed these pics of me as a goofy 12-year-old visiting the set of Twin Peaks in 1989. My mom won a raffle at my LA elementary school where the prize was to visit the set – they were shooting the beginning of Season 2 at the time, and they had moved production from the Pacific Northwest to sound stages in Burbank, CA, where they had re-created all of the show’s iconic locations. And so my mom and I were traipsing around the Twin Peaks set on an afternoon in 1989 – very surreal! More photos from the visit can be seen on the Pretty Things Tumblr.

Rock Icons punk rock Patti Smith on the red carpet Noah lullabies

Proto-punk Patti Smith walked the red carpet last night for the London premiere of the Biblical epic Noah, looking every inch rock’s grande dame. Who even knew she was affiliated with the movie? Apparently, she wrote the lullaby that Noah sings to his his child, that was later used in the closing credits. And just like that, the movie just got that much more interesting. I might have to see it after all. Listen to the song below, and then check out her interview with NME where she discusses  how she wrote “Mercy Is” by studying Russell Crowe’s filmography and drawing inspiration from Nina Simone and Puccini’s operas.
