RIP Queer Cinema Lewis Tice

Lewis Tice, a longtime champion of queer cinema and longtime friend of WOW, died suddenly yesterday. He was just 44 years old. According to IndieWire:

Tice passionately worked in various capacities within the industry throughout his career.  He launched and guided many films to success including Latter Days, Another Gay Movie, and Mysterious Skin for TLA Releasing, where he worked as Vice President of North American Operations at the time of his death.

Lewis also worked at over 20 film festivals including Sundance, the Chicago International Film Festival and Frameline. He served as a film programmer at the Philadelphia International Film Festival and QFest Philadelphia, and also produced several feature films including, ‘BearCity,’ ‘Longhorns’ and ‘Blood for Irina.’

His partner Kevin Kelly had this to say on Facebook this morning: “I just wanted to let everyone know what’s going on. My partner, Lewis Tice, has passed away very unexpectedly. He had been in his office in NYC for the past couple of weeks working, he was due to come home next week. They are speculating it was natural causes, I should know more in the next couple of days. I appreciate everyone’s thoughts and prayers during this time.”

Tice was featured in the WOW documentary When I Knew, talking about the moment he knew he was gay. Apparently, he and his best friend LOOOOOOOVED Bruce Boxleitner (lol) and one night they were pretending to be Bruce and Kate Jackson in The Scarecrow and Mrs King – so ’80s, I love it – and while they were kissing and rubbing up on each other – VOILA! He realized he was gay. Watch the clip below.

RIP Queer Cinema Lewis Tice

Writes TLA Entertainment Group CEO Derek Curl: ”Lewis has been my closest colleague for over 10 years. He was there for most of my firsts in the film business, protecting me from the sharks and introducing me to the people he knew…which was everyone. It is a devastating loss to me personally, to LGBT cinema and to all the filmmakers that relied on his kind soul and glorious laugh to get them through. This most sweet and talented man will be missed by all who had the good fortune to know and work with him,”

Celebrity Roundup: Kate Upton, John Malkovich, and Rita Ora’s Big Fashion Fail

Its been a bustling 24 hours in pop culture. Catch up with all your favorite superstars, including a dazzling Kate Upton at the Other Woman premiere, John Malkovich looking CUH. RAY. ZEEE. and OMG, WILL SOMEBODY PLEASE EXPLAIN RITA ORA TO ME?

Rita Ora Poppy Delevingne Leslie Mann Kate Upton John Malkovich Jesse Bradford celebrity roundup Cameron Diaz

Kate Upton, Cameron Diaz ,and Leslie Mann arrive for the premiere of The Other Woman in London, and Kate is SLAYING IT in that superfab William Vintage dress with its asymetrical neckline. I hope she’s good in the movie. And I hope she becomes a HUGE MOVIE STAR.

John Malkovich – in a Very! Blue! Suit! – seems to be doing his best Schleprock impersonation. Anybody? Anybody? No Schleprock fans in the house?

Poppy Delevingne at the preview of The Glamour of Italian Fashion exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. People get all goofy about Cara, you know, but for my money, it’s ALL ABOUT Poppy. She’s the sister to watch. Just check out this Emilio Pucci Pre-Fall 2014 dress. It’s TO DIE FOR.

Rita Ora , also at the V& A wearing… whut. I don’t know. I don’t know. It’s Cavalli. It’s a white, fringed leather dress with studs and a fur collar. And it sort of seems like something Pink would have worn back in the days. Or Lita Ford. Or Auntie Entity. I imagine it’s awfully fun to swoosh around in, but DEAR GOD, what an eyesore. And somebody please explain to me how it is we’ve been blogging INCESSANTLY about Rita for OVER A YEAR NOW, and every designer is just THROWING their most fabulous pieces at her EVERY NIGHT, and she has yet to have anything REMOTELY RESEMBLING a career in the States? Does she do anything except go to parties any more? Is she an actual singer in other countries? Is she racing up the charts with NEW, FRESH MATERIAL everywhere but here? Because I don’t get it. I just don’t get it. And I think what drives me MOST BANANAS, is that I WANT TO GET ON THAT GRAVY TRAIN. I want that life. I want to be an A-lister with the career of a Z-lister. It seems like there’s VERY MINIMAL work involved and a just great deal of partying and playing dress up.

Jesse Bradford at the LA premiere of 10 Rules For Sleeping Around held at the Egyptian Theatre. And hmmm. He’s not quite the same strapping lad we first met in Bring It On and Swim Fan, but I’m not mad at him for aging, I guess. I’m just going to treat this as an excellent opportunity, though, to drag out the old Bring It On GIFs and luxuriate in some fierce aught nostalgia. Enjoy. (Photos: Pacific Coast News)

Drake Bell SLAMS Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, & Ariana Grande for Their “Disgusting Fans”

superfans Little Monsters Lady Gaga justin bieber Drake Bell Bitterness Beliebers Ariana Grande

In a new BuzzFeed interview, Drake Bell… wait. WHO? Drake Bell, of Drake & Josh fame (of course) goes on the attack, lashing out at Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande for their aggressively nutty fan base and their rapid rise to super stardom, saying “There’s just a lot of really young, entitled people” in the music biz.

“I don’t think a lot of these young people have to work very hard. They’re found on YouTube and, boom, thrown into the studio so they think they can get anything they want. Ariana Grande is a billionaire before she’s been an artist. You have to work to be able to appreciate what you have, and what work did she ever have to do in her life?”

“And I can’t stand that, with a lot of the pop stars, there’s this idea of ‘Are you in our clique? Are you a Directioner or are you a Belieber? Oh, you’re not in our gang? Then you’re not cool and you need to go in a hole and die. I don’t understand it. And what’s worse is artists like Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber don’t come out and say, ‘I love having you as my fans, but you shouldn’t be acting this way.’ They just eat it all up, and I think it’s repulsive.”

“If I catch one of my fans saying something improper, a gay slur or any derogatory term, I instantly tweet directly at them and say, ‘This isn’t how we do it. Lady Gaga, who says she’s so anti-bullying, was on [Howard Stern's SiriusXM show] and Howard read all of these awful, awful tweets her fans had been sending him, [and] asked how she responded to her fans doing the exact antithesis of what she stands for. She said, ‘You have to understand, Howard, it comes from a place of love. They don’t want to see me get hurt.’ I couldn’t believe she didn’t take a second to address her fans and say how disgusted she was they’d do something like that. But none of them do that. Justin Bieber just tweets, ‘Yeah, Beliebers, go hard’ when they’re attacking somebody. Ariana Grande’s fans told Perez Hilton that he and his son needed to die and get cancer, and she just fed it. It’s disgusting.”

And while part of me wants to pat him gently on the head and say “You just work on you, Drake Bell” the other part of me TOTALLY agrees with everything he’s saying. So… go get ‘em, tiger. (via E!; Photo: Pacific Coast News)

You know you’ve really made it when you get your own porn parody. Molly’s Wrecking Ballz dropped today – HURRAY! – starring porn star Miley Mae as the ubiquitous pop tart with the very naughty tongue. Billy Ray must be so proud.

Wrecking Ball porn stars porn parody porn Miley Mae Miley Cyrus

Devil’s Film has been teasing this feature for a while, and it finally debuted today. Don’t worry, I watched it so you don’t have to. In it, we see Molly recreate a lesbian scene from her video“We Can’t Stop”… what POSSIBLY happened backstage with Robin Thicke at the VMAs… and a random limo hookup with Justin Timberlake – because why not?

You can watch the trailer here, but please don’t, it’s so tawdry and sad. You’ll need a Silkwood shower afterwards.

But you DO have to read the really funny (and totally NSFW) video description here (via Porner Bros):

Devil’s Film proudly presents “Molly’s Wrecking Ballz”, a full-length XXX parody starring the infamous Miley Mae and her favorite celebrity fuck friends. Directed by Hall of Fame shooter Barrett Blade, with pseudo appearances by Beyonce, Liam Hemsworth, Robin Thicke, and Justin Beiber look-alikes, this A-list fuck fest is sure to make headlines and turn heads.

She came in like a wrecking ball and went out like daddy’s hit single! Meet Molly, America’s favorite stoner who’s begging for you to bone her! When this pill-popping party princess isn’t busy getting baked on bong loads, she’s trying to fill her grill with something other than drugs! She’s got enough chemicals inside her body to sanitize a port-a-potty but she still loves to twerk it while you jerk it! Never mind that she can’t keep her eyes open and legs closed at the same time – she’s losing fans faster than she’s losing self respect! Just make sure you don’t touch that wrecking ball after she’s done with it!

Have You Seen the Australian Snickers Ad Yet? And Do You Have an Opinion About It?

$

In a controversial new Snickers ad airing on Australian TV, construction workers shout empowering messages to women on the street, like:  “I’d like to show you the respect you deserve,” “You want to hear a filthy word? Gender bias!” and “You know what I’d like to see? A society in which the objectification of women makes way for gender-neutral interactions, free from assumptions and expectations!” I sort of thought it was sweet but people are up in arms about it, saying it’s sexist to both men AND women.

As Policy Mic writes:

“On the one hand, the women in the advertisement are naive props shocked that men would ever treat them with respect. On the other, the men are portrayed as presumably idiotic, disgusting and flat-out predatorial in their natural state. In the world that Snickers Australia envisions, it seems like whether you’re a man or a woman, it pretty much sucks to be you.”

In addition, Ad Week argues, the “You’re not yourself when you’re hungry” tagline at the end of the commercial has an offensive message about class: “By saying blue-collar guys ‘aren’t themselves’ when they’re being polite, it pretty clearly implies they’re otherwise a bunch of misogynistic boors.”

I was confused by that, too. Like, if being hungry makes you act different, eat a Snickers and you’ll go back to your regular objectifying self? That’s an odd message.

Feministing had even more to say on that:

Do we really want to think that the only way a man can be pro-gender equality is if he’s not being himself? Shouldn’t that be a part of everyone’s character?

Another, perhaps more important, point about this ad:

Even though the construction workers are saying positive, non-harassing things, they are actually still engaging in behavior we do not support. They are singling women out and demanding their time and attention as they yell at them. Men are able to walk by the site and go about their business and keep thinking their thoughts, but the same is not true for women. They are interrupted, their attention is demanded. That is not equality. If you wouldn’t yell it at a man, you probably shouldn’t yell it at a woman. Remember: women do not owe you their time or attention!

The last point here is crucial: women do not owe you their time or attention. This ad assumes there could be some redeeming factor to yelling at women you don’t know, if only you’re saying things they may welcome hearing. However, these men are still expecting that these women, who are doing nothing more than walking down the street, should devote some portion of their day to paying attention to these men. And in this instance, they should be grateful, because they’re so beside themselves with hunger, they’re not even saying their normal disgusting things. They actually care!

It’s the worst assumptions about men, wrapped up in some nice guy entitlement, and topped off with an excuse for street harassment. In other words, patriarchy doing its damndest to remain relevant.

We don’t have to accept that the default position of manhood/masculinity is anti-woman. We shouldn’t. It’s a false binary that forecloses on possibilities of partnership and personal gender expression. We don’t have to consider masculinity at odds with the feminine. We only do so to assert dominance and gain power.

Likewise, we don’t have to accept that the price of being a woman in public is that men will yell things at you — whether vile or uplifting. We can ensure that women feel as safe and unbothered in public spaces as men (generally speaking) do.

What do you think? Harmless commercial or polarizing propaganda perpetuating misogyny?

James Franco’s Instagram Scandal? I’m Going with “Hoax”

underage girl Kelly & Michael James Franco instagram celebrity scandals

Of course you’re following the Franco scandal, right? In which the 30-something hunk was all up in some young girl’s gig, trying to book a hotel room to make sweet, sweet love to her, but talking to her VIA INSTAGRAM? Well, I’m calling it right here, right now: It’s a hoax.

Read the particulars here.

Here’s the thing, though: I find it hard to believe that JAMES FRANCO – who was savvy enough to ask the girl to tag the video so he could then track her to Instagram – was stupid enough to conduct the conversation in front of his 1,630,085 followers and NOT EXPECT to get a reaction. The fact that he did it on the day his Palo Alto trailer premiered (in which he plays a predatory teacher coming on to a 17-year-old student), makes me think this is some sort of weird performance art piece (a la Joaquin Phoenix or Chris Gaines). He’s becoming the character to promote the movie.

Even his confession today on Kelly & Michael seems off. Right off the bat, he acknowledged and sheepishly apologized for the incident.

“I was feeling awkward — I didn’t want to come on the show and just feel awkward,” he said. “I’m embarrassed, and I guess I’m just a model of how social media is tricky. It’s a way that people meet each other today, but what I’ve learned — I guess because I’m new to it — is you don’t know who’s on the other end. You get a feel for them, you don’t know who you’re talking to. I used bad judgment and I learned my lesson.”

“Unfortunately, in my position — I mean, I have a very good life, but not only do I have to go through the embarrassing kind of rituals of meeting someone, but if I do that, then it gets published for the world. So now, it’s double-embarrassing.”

But it just seems OFF. Wrong. Rehearsed. Weird. Not him. Watch it here and decide for yourself:

Although… the more I think about it, it seems strange that Kelly & Michael would be a party to this weird performance art piece. “Whooo-hoo! A statutory rape hoax! How can we get in on this?” So, I don’t know.

What do you think? Tweet me @JSJdarling and let’s discuss.
