#BornThisDay: Writer, James Baldwin

August 2, 1924James Baldwin:

“Hatred, which could destroy so much, never failed to destroy the man who hated, and this was an immutable law.”

The very first “gay” book I read was James Baldwin’s Giovanni’s Room (1956). At 15-years-old, the tragic story did not lift my spirits at all. I was reading anything and everything I could find that dealt with the subject of homosexuality or that was written by a gay person, and the message I was getting was not positive. I had already decided as a young teenager that my life was not going to be tragic because I was gay, yet I was searching for someone to point the way. Still, I found the novel to be erotic and the language was exciting, the voice new.

I continued to follow Baldwin’s life and work, from his exile in Europe to when he returned to the USA and took an active role in the Civil Rights movements of the 1960s and 1970s. I kept reading his novels, poems and essays, and I really admired his work. I had my eyes opened by his words.

The grandson of a slave, Baldwin had a life of extreme hardship, growing up illegitimate and very poor in Harlem. As a child, he searched for a way to escape his circumstances. Baldwin:

“I knew I was black, of course, but I also knew I was smart. I didn’t know how I would use my mind, or even if I could, but that was the only thing I had to use.”

By the time he was 14-years-old, Baldwin was spending much of his time in libraries and had found his passion for writing.

During this early part of his life, he followed in his religious, strict stepfather’s path and he became a preacher. Of those teen years, Baldwin wrote:

Those three years in the pulpit, I didn’t realize it then, that is what turned me into a writer, really, dealing with all that anguish and that despair and that beauty.”

The language of the church, the language of the Bible, its cadences and tone had a huge influence Baldwin’s writing style.

Baldwin didn’t find what he was looking for in the church and after working for a short while for the New Jersey railroad, Baldwin moved to Greenwich Village, where he worked as a freelance writer, mostly doing book reviews. He caught the attention of famous novelist, Richard Wright, who helped him get a grant so he could support himself as a writer.

But, after having his work rejected by publishers because he was a Negro and a Queer, and recognizing his race and gayness made him an outsider in his own country, Baldwin left for Europe at 24-years-old. Paris became his new home, but he would finish his first novel, Go Tell It On The Mountain, a semi-autobiographical story about a teenager living in Harlem, in Loèche-les-Bains, Switzerland in 1953. The passion and depth with which he described the struggles of black Americans were unlike anything that had been written. Although it didn’t sell well at the time, Go Tell It On The Mountain is now considered an American classic.

Although he spent a great deal of his life abroad, Baldwin always remained a quintessentially American writer. He published two novels, Giovanni’s Room (1956) and Another Country (1962). He never ceased to reflect on his experience as a black man in white America. In numerous essays, novels, plays and public speeches, the eloquent voice of Baldwin spoke of the pain and struggle of black Americans and the saving power of brotherhood. Readers began to respond; both Nobody Knows My Name (1961) and Another Country became bestsellers.

In the early 1960s, overwhelmed by a sense of responsibility to the times, Baldwin returned to the USA take part in the Civil Rights Movement. Traveling throughout the South, he began work on an explosive work about black identity and racial struggle, The Fire Next Time (1963). It also became a bestseller, and Baldwin ended up on the cover of Time Magazine.

The American Civil Rights Movement was not open to gay people. The only known gay men in the movement were Baldwin and Bayard Rustin. Rustin and King were very close, and Rustin was the architect of success of the March On Washington in August 1963. Many were bothered by Rustin’s gayness. King considered homosexuality to be a mental illness that could be overcome. King later distanced himself from Rustin and Baldwin. Baldwin was conspicuously uninvited to speak at the March On Washington.

Baldwin was harassed by the FBI, with a 1885 page file on his activities. Baldwin had a contentious relationship with the FBI, blaming violence in Birmingham during the spring of 1963 on J. Edgar Hoover. Baldwin even taunted the FBI by saying in interviews he was writing a book about their operation. The work never materialized, but the idea sent the FBI into a frenzy as it tried to get its hands on a manuscript.

After the assassinations of his friends Medgar Evers, Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., and Malcolm X, Baldwin returned to France, where he worked on a book about the bitterness of the times, If Beale Street Could Talk (1974). It is currently being developed into a film by last year’s Oscar winning film, Moonlight’s director/writer Barry Jenkins, who has long dreamed of the project.

Baldwin began to realize that violence might be the only route to racial justice. Some optimism about peaceful progress would return in his themes, but by the early 1970s, he also suffered from writer’s block. Baldwin:

“Any writer, I suppose, feels that the world into which he was born is nothing less than a conspiracy against the cultivation of his talent, which attitude certainly has a great deal to support it.”

Baldwin and Marlon Brando enjoyed an especially close relationship for more than two decades. They lived together in NYC before they were each famous. Baldwin was the driving force behind Brando’s unabashed support of the Civil Rights Movement.

In 1983, Baldwin became a professor in the African-American Studies department of the University Of Massachusetts. He spent his final years in St. Paul de Vence on the French Riviera, where he left this world, taken by that damn cancer in November 1987. He was just 63-years-old.

Baldwin had an astonishing list of good friends and supporters: Billy Dee Williams, Huey P. Newton, Jean-Paul Sartre, Jean Genet, Lee Strasberg, Elia Kazan, Rip Torn, Alex Haley, Lena Horne, Miles Davis, Josephine Baker, Allen Ginsberg, and especially, Nina Simone and Maya Angelou, who called Baldwin her “friend and brother”.

Baldwin was made a Commandeur de la Légion d’Honneur by the French government in 1986.

You really need to catch the documentary film I Am Not Your Negro, one of the best films of 2016. Written by Baldwin and directed by Raoul Peck, it is based on Baldwin’s unfinished manuscript, Remember This House. Streaming on Netflix.

“White people cooling it means a very simple thing. Black power frightens them. White power doesn’t frighten them. We are not, you know, bombing a country out of existence. Nor menacing your children. White power is doing that. White people have to accept their history and their actual circumstances, and they won’t. Not without a miracle they won’t. Goodwill won’t do it. One’s got to face the fact that we police the globe–we, the Americans, police the globe for a very good reason.”

#Breaking: Trump Preparing to Sue Schools Over Affirmative Action

According to the New York Times, the Trump administration is preparing to “redirect” the resources of the DOJ’s civil rights division to investigate and sue universities over affirmative action admissions policies deemed to discriminate against WHITE applicants.

The document obtained by the Times is an internal announcement to the civil rights division says it is seeking lawyers interested in working for a new project on

“investigations and possible litigation related to intentional race-based discrimination in college and university admissions.”

This new announcement says that the project might be be run out of the division’s front office, where Trump’s appointees work, rather than its Educational Opportunities Section, which is run by career civil servants and usually handles work involving schools and universities.

Critics of the project said it was clearly targeting admissions programs that can give members of disadvantaged groups, like black and Latino students, an edge over other applicants with comparable or higher test scores, another sign that the civil rights division is taking on a conservative bent under Trump and his much-maligned AG, Jeff Sessions.

Roger Clegg, a former top official in the civil rights division during the Reagan administration said,

The civil rights laws were deliberately written to protect everyone from discrimination, and it is frequently the case that not only are whites discriminated against now, but frequently Asian-Americans are as well.

But Kristen Clarke, the president of the liberal Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, criticized it,

This is deeply disturbing. It would be a dog whistle that could invite a lot of chaos and unnecessarily create hysteria among colleges and universities who may fear that the government may come down on them for their efforts to maintain diversity on their campuses.

The Supreme Court voted 4 to 3 to uphold a race-conscious program at the University of Texas at Austin but there are several pending lawsuits, including Harvard. DOJ has not taken a position in those cases.

In 2009, the Obama administration vowed to revitalize the agency and hired career officials who brought in many new lawyers with experience working for traditional, liberal-leaning civil-rights organizations.

This comes on the heels other changes in Justice Department policy on voting rights, gay rights and police reforms, so we shall see what it brings. But this is clearly another step toward taking away rights and undoing the previous administration’s legacy which seems to be Trump’s two word agenda and overriding policy toward EVERYTHING.

“Delete Obama”.

#ReclaimingMyTime: DJ Adam Joseph Turns Rep. Maxine Waters’ Catchphrase Into Dance Track OT Summer. Listen

In case you missed it, Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) was NOT having it when Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin decided to dodge her basic questions in a Financial Services Committee hearing last Thursday.

Waters repeatedly asked Mnuchin as to why his office failed to reply to a letter from her office about Trump’s financial ties to Russian banks. Rather than answering the question, Mnuchin dodged the question – or at least tried to. But his tactic of stalling with praise of Water’s many accomplishments didn’t work.

I don’t want to take up my time with how great I am…

She said the now infamous catchphrase,

“Reclaiming my time”

over a dozen times and the internet immediately lifted her on its shoulders.

Waters told MSNBC that she “could not believe” her protest phrase went viral. To her, it was simply a procedural part of the hearing in order to use her time wisely with a combative witness.

Despite her efforts to keep the questioning on track, Mnuchin “absolutely stonewalled” her, pointing out that he didn’t fully answer all of her questions in the hearing about how he handles financial information regarding the Trump-Russia investigation.

But to those who’ve made the meme go viral, there is less thought as to Waters’s unanswered questions. They feel that she made the most of her time.

Of course the internet turned her one-woman stand into the meme of the year. Broderick Greer uplifting gospel version got praise from Waters herself.

There were many other tributes and accolades but the singer, songwriter, and producer, Adam Joseph (who did the sickening track Keep It On, ft. RuPaul, Valentina, Shea & Alyssa) had a remix of the epic moment that just might just become the dance floor request of the summer.

Listen.

“Madonna “Like A Virgin” Album 1984 Cover Shoot and Stage Worn White Lace Corset” Gotta Have Rock N Roll Auction, July 29, 2017

An anonymous collector who bid $19,294 for a white lace corset Madonna wore might want to hear this news.

Maripol, who was Madonna’s stylist and friend in the early days (and who I’ve known for 35 years) says,

It’s fake. I designed the corset she wore on the cover of ‘Like a Virgin.’ Just compare photos of the corsets side to side and you can see they are different.

It’s a lie. There was only one corset, and I sewed it myself. I’m upset someone paid so much for a fake.”

A spokesperson for auction company GottaHaveRockAndRoll.com refuted Maripol’s claims and said two corsets were purchased at Macy’s for Madonna to use on the cover shoot. The catalog doesn’t say that the corset on the block was the one that appears on Like a Virgin‘s cover, however they told the NY Post,

The one that was sold was used in the original photo shoot and used by Madonna onstage.

The auction had total sales of nearly $750,000, but 22 other Madonna items — including a breakup letter from Tupac Shakur (which has been a source of controversy) a pair of worn satin panties and a hairbrush with Madonna’s hair in it — were removed under court order from the singer.

Maripol defended her friend,

Madonna doesn’t want someone to have her DNA.

Darlene Lutz, who was an assistant to the pop star, will be in Manhattan Supreme Court in September to argue that she is the rightful owner of the memorabilia. Gottahaverockandroll plans to sell the items at a future auction.

Hey batter-batter-batter. RDR legend Adore Delano goes full-on Sporty Spice in her new video “Negative Nancy.” She’s lean, mean, blonde, and bustin’ out of her jock strap as she growls her way through the lyrics later in the locker room. It’s quite a sight to behold. The new sound is full-on rock/grunge with echoes of the Pretty Reckless (that’s a good thing). Check it out below– I think I like the new rebooted Adore.

Comedian Lil Duval Stands By His Claim He Would Kill a Trans Woman If He Slept with Her

On Friday’s “Breakfast Club” radio show, comedian Lil Duval told hosts Charlamagne Tha God, Angela Yee and DJ Envy, he would “kill” a woman if he learned she was transgender after having sex with her.

“I don’t care, she dying,” he told listeners.

Twitter blew up immediately after his comments aired, with listeners rightly pointing out that trans women of color face some of the highest rates of violence in the LGBTQ community, and comments like his do not help.

Via HuffPo:

In 2017 alone, at least 15 transgender people, mostly trans women of color, have been “shot or killed” by other violent means ― and those are just the reported deaths. Violence against trans women is no “joke,” and Duval and needs to be held accountable for his comments and ongoing refusal to recognize the lived impact of his words.

The Breakfast Club has received a considerable amount of blowback from the interview, but has yet to release a formal statement about the comments. Lil Duval, meanwhile, has dug in his heels.

Watch the entire interview below.

Trans activist Tiq Milan had a few thoughts on the matter.

Tyson Ritter Is a Trans Prostitute in New All-American Rejects Video

All-American Rejects frontman Tyson Ritter is a trans prostitute walking the streets by night, and a wealthy family man by day in the problematic-but-mesmerizing new music video mashup of their new songs “Sweat” and “Close Your Eyes.”

“The film is a story about this functioning identity crisis and expectations on how we’re supposed to be in a public place,” Ritter said of the clip, directed by Jamie Thraves, who’s shot videos for Radiohead, Blur, Coldplay and Sam Smith.

Hmmm. OK.

But is it OK in 2017 to suggest that trans sex workers are merely slumming it for kicks? Is it the exploitation of a marginalized section of society for the sake of ART? Somehow I doubt many of the women of the stroll go home to multi-million dollar houses. It all feels like a weird cis/het/Republican fantasy of sex workers, like Ronald Reagan’s story about the woman who buys steak with foodstamps then drives home in her Cadillac. It’s doing a disservice to the actual women whose stories SHOULD be told.

Watch below and let me know what you think.

Angelyne REVEALED at Last! The True Story of the Billboard Diva Is Finally Solved!

For decades, the mysterious blonde bombshell known only as Angelyne has been a mainstay in the lives of Angelenos. “A pop culture icon of self-creation and self-marketing since the early 1980s — now regarded as a forerunner to Paris Hilton, Kim Kardashian and every personal-brand hustler on social media” is how the Hollywood Reporter describes her. But very little is REALLY known about her. She brushes aside questions of her backstory with vague, breathy non-answers. Rumors abound that she was born in Idaho or Georgia or this place or that, and that she’s much older than she claims – in her 70s or more. Even if you’ve known her for 20 years or more (as I have), you still feel like you know absolutely NOTHING about her other than her carefully constructed public persona.

“I lost my parents at a young age,” she once said, “and because of that, I sought the attention of the world through my tricks. I said, ‘Well, I’m going to get the love of the world.’ ” When I pushed for more, she shut me down. “It’s just a long story,” she said, the cartoonishly girly lilt of her voice gone flat. “I don’t want to get into it. I made my way here.

Now Hollywood Reporter has uncovered the long-buried details of her early life, her parents, and an early marriage back in the 1960s. It’s a fascinating read.

Her name? Renee Goldberg. She’s from the Valley. She is 66 years old. Her parents Hendrik Goldberg and Bronia Zernicka were Holocaust survivors who endured “unimaginable horrors at a series of concentration camps, first together at Skarzysko, where prisoners’ main job was to make munitions, and then apart at the 20th century’s most infamous hellscapes, including Buchenwald and Bergen-Belsen.”

In the late ’60s, she married Michael Strauss, the scion of a Beverly Hills dynasty who made their money inventing the changeable reader board on movie theater marquees. Although the marriage didn’t last long, he still has sweet memories of their time together.

They’d met through mutual friends while she was still living on the Westside. “She was the most gorgeous redhead,” he said. “She was unique, beautiful, smart.” Later, during their short matrimony, they lived together with Annette and her first husband at the corner of Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street, “right where Wolfman Jack used to record.” Strauss emailed me photos while we were talking: the pair posing barefoot by the pool at a friend’s backyard party, a striking black-and-white portrait he’d taken of Goldberg at his family’s Trousdale Estates home. (A budding photographer, he shot the likes of Donovan and War.) And, most importantly, he sent the same yearbook photo the genealogist had shown me.

Strauss explained that Goldberg’s childhood had been difficult. Her father, a man with a concentration camp number tattooed on his arm, had been controlling, cruel and narrow-minded, propelling her to flee home early. Like many survivors of trauma, Henry didn’t discuss it. This extended, to Strauss’ memory, as far as Goldberg’s own history; her father told her she was born in Israel, not a German displaced-persons camp. Regardless, “she has never considered herself Jewish.”

Strauss was surprised to learn from me that Goldberg’s mother had died just a few years before he met her; he’d always thought it had been much earlier, a hardened scar. “She’d never talk about her mother — ever, ever, ever. It was a subject that couldn’t be brought up. If I brought it up, it was shut down.”

After they broke up — it was amicable — he traveled for several years, returning to L.A. in the mid-1970s. “I hooked up with Renee again, and she was Angelyne,” he said. “I wasn’t there when she made the transition. All of a sudden, big boobs, blond hair, this voice — the voice used to make me nuts. It didn’t compute with who I’d known she was.”

It would be another decade before she’d achieve notoriety for her pioneering famous-for-being-famous billboard campaign. “As an entrepreneur, I was sad that she wasn’t ever able to be more [financially] successful,” Strauss said of her career, which emerged out of punk and new wave bands and occasional bit parts in films. “Why didn’t she take it farther? Why not a TV show? She invented this marvelous, crazy, out-of-this-world character but couldn’t fully sell it. I was always a Renee rooter: ‘Come on, girl, take it to the next level!’ But she only had the capacity to take it so far.”

The whole article (with many more pics) is absolutely fascinating, a must-read. It makes her slightly more compelling and *almost* empathetic.

Ah, the lost art of trolling porn theaters. The smell! The sounds! The MEN! Nothing like it in the world. Of course, porn theaters have mostly vanished from gay life, since the invention of computer porn. Most millennials now know very little about cruising in an analogue world. The queer film organization Dirty Looks is trying to change that. They’re here to give us a little history lesson. Friday night (Aug 4), from midnight until Saturday night at midnight, they’re staging a pop-up porn theater showing non-stop vintage gay porn (and some lezsploitation and queer art fare) from the pre-VHS era of late 70s early 80s. Full on fun old-school porn – in a theatre! It’s art! It’s hot! Think old-school gay cinema – Casey Donovan! Jack Wrangler! Wooohooooo!

The arty queer film folks at Dirty Looks, return to Los Angeles for a 24-hour marathon of classic beefcake X-rated action taking over a honest-to-goodness theater! Yes, you actually go sit in the dark and watch gay sex WITH OTHER PEOPLE. MADNESS! (Also, fun!)

It’s basically a tribute to old-school gay porn theaters and the hot flicks they screened back in the day. As the curators put it, for this humpy movie marathon “the programming will promiscuously alternate between XXX works and avant-garde fair, then considered too personal or tempestuous for standard cinema screens.” So you’ll get classics starring ’70s and early ’80s gay porn gods like Casey Donovan and Jack Wrangler, some even featuring a soundtrack by legendary disco god Patrick Cowley.

Here’s a bit more about the saucy celluloid action coming your way. “Sesión Continua will take place at Son of Semele, a 36-seat theater in Historic Filipinotown (near Silver Lake) that has been operating since 2003. We want to convey the intimacy and appetites that animated original porn theaters like the Park or the Coronet Theater, with a limited seating that calls for closeness and an extended program that lubricates the flow of audiences into the theater.”

Here’s more info:

Trump-Shaped Ecstasy Pills Are Being Sold on the Dark Web

Will somebody pleeeeease give me a path to this Dark Web I keep hearing about? It sounds so much more interesting than lurking about Reddit and 4Chan all day.

Anyway. Yes, it’s true. Donald Trump is the new face of Ecstasy. Drug manufacturers advertising their wares on the Dark Web promise “Quality orange Donald Trump tablets. Very nice press, really detailed. Comes in the actual shape of the head of the President of the USA.” The tablets contain approximately 220 mg of MDMA, a Schedule 1 drug notorious for its association with EDM and the electronic music environment. And old clubkids.

Via Dancing Astronaut:

The tablets are reportedly being sold for low prices as well. A tablet was marketed at roughly $10 USD, with the price decreasing steadily for bulk purchases. With the tablets being produced in Amsterdam, and being shipped to the US and across the world, it is of course unlikely that President Trump would approve of “foreign interference” in the American market.

Is 220 mg a lot? Asking for a friend…

#BornThisDay: Actor, Jean Hagen

Photograph from MGM

August 3, 1923– Jean Hagen

Shirley Verhagen was born in Chicago, but when she found work on Broadway in her early 20s, she became Jean Hagen.

On a cold winter evening in 2012, I had the thrill of viewing one of my favorite films in a new print on a big screen. It was a movie that I had seen many times on television, but never in a theatre. It did not disappoint. That film continued to delight with the mastery and freshness of the talent involved. Singin’ In The Rain (1952) holds a rightful place as one of the truly great works of art from the 20th Century. This time, what did take me by surprise was not so much the stunning beauty of Gene Kelly’s ass, but the staggering, startling, striking, stunning, stupefyingly stupendous work of Jean Hagen as vain and talent-challenged silent film star Lina Lamont who Debbie Reynolds has to dub. Without her finely crafted and perfectly modulated performance, the film would have fallen short of being perfect. And, I do think it is rather perfect. Hagen deservedly received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for Singin’ In The Rain, forever giving her an exalted place in “the cinema firmament”.

Hagen attended Northwestern University where she performed on stage with her BFF, Patricia Neal. In 1945, Hagen moved to NYC where she and Neal were roommates. She found roles in radio shows, and worked as a cigarette girl in a nightclub, and as an usher at the Booth Theater. During the run of the Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur play Swan Song at the Booth, Hagen was overheard by the playwrights criticizing their show. Hecht and MacArthur introduced themselves and they ended up asking her to audition for a small role. Her next stage role was in Lillian Hellman‘s Another Part Of The Forest a few months later, with Patricia Neal also in the cast.

Her film debut was as a femme fatale in gay director George Cukor’s comedy Adam’s Rib(1949) with Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy, and her performance brought her a contract with MGM. She was especially good in John Houston’s The Asphalt Jungle (1950) for the studio and she received excellent reviews. Hagen appeared in MGM’s film noir Side Street(1950), especially apt playing a sincere, but dim, gangster’s gun moll.

In Singin’ In the Rain, her character Lina Lamont’s voice is dubbed in the talking segments by Kathy Selden, Debbie Reynolds‘ character. But actually, in a crazy twist, director Stanley Donen used Hagen dubbing Reynolds dubbing Hagen. Hagen’s own voice was quite versatile and Kathy Selden was supposed to have a cultured style of speaking and Burbank native Reynolds had a pronounced western accent. Lina Lamont’s singing was actually done by Betty Royce, dubbing Reynolds dubbing Hagen. Co-star Donald O’Connor wrote:

“Jean was a consummate actor. She was the sweetest gal in the world but she was on the quiet side, not like Lina Lamont at all with that high-pitched voice. No, she was a legit actor. They didn’t get a ditzy blonde to play the part. That’s why that part is so dynamic and so wonderful.”

Hagen preferred dramatic roles over comic ones and she grew weary of the typecasting. Her final films at MGM were the Lana Turner musical Latin Lovers (1953) and a Red Skelton comedy, Half A Hero (1953). Hagen:

“Every time Mr. Mayer would get mad at me, he’d punish me by putting me in a damn Lana Turner movie.”

In 1953, Hagen joined the cast of the new Desilu Studio’s family sitcom Make Room ForDaddy (not to be confused with my one man show with the same title). As the very funny wife of star Danny Thomas, Hagen received three Emmy Award nominations. She had trouble getting along with Thomas who objected to her wearing jeans and shirts on rehearsal days, at one point admonishing her saying: “For God’s sake, put on high heels, put on a little lipstick!”. After the first three seasons she grew dissatisfied with the role and her treatment and she left the series. Thomas didn’t appreciate Hagen’s leaving and he had her character bite the big one rather than be recast. This may be the very first television character to be killed off in a sitcom. Lovely and nimble Marjorie Lord was cast a year later as Thomas’ second wife and she worked well with Thomas and the show lasted several more seasons.

Although Hagen made frequent guest appearances in various television series for the rest of her career, she was unable to successfully revive her once promising film career, only finding work playing smallish supporting roles: the secretary to FDR in Sunrise At Campobello (1960), and the pal of Bette Davis in the smart film noir Dead Ringer (1964).

In the late 1960s, Hagen was diagnosed with throat cancer and she spent the rest of her life in some kind of treatment for it, either hospitalized or under an oncologist’s care. A tough situation for an actor noted for her voice.

She had a comeback of sorts playing character roles in episodes of 1970s television series like Starsky & Hutch and The Streets Of San Francisco. Sadly, gorgeous, talented Hagen made her final film appearance in the nutty male-hooker television film Alexander: The Other Side Of Dawn (1977).

That damn cancer finally grabbed Hagen in summer 1977 while she was living at the Motion Picture Country Home, gone way too early at just 54-years-old. Her last appearance was released posthumously, a reprise of her 1959 role opposite Fred MacMurray in The Shaggy Dog for The Wonderful World Of Disney television series in 1978. Hagen has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 1502 Vine Street.

On her birthday, let’s take a moment to remember her very special achievement in the greatest film musical of all time. Hagen was a marvel, a special kind of genius, a beautiful clown.

Dukes of Hazard Star Arrested for Indecent Assault and Cocaine Possession (UPDATE: It’s Worse Than We Thought)

Tom Wopat aka Luke Duke from the iconic 1970s homoerotic sausage fest The Dukes of Hazard (he was the sliiiiiightly less attractive one) has been arrested for indecent assault and battery in Massachusetts.

Wopat was starring in a local production of 42nd Street in Waltham, Mass, when he allegedly put his hands down the pants of a woman connected with the production.

From TMZ:

According to law enforcement … police arrested 65-year-old Wopat Wednesday at 10:53 PM. Police were actively looking for him, and pulled him over in his Ford Bronco. We’re told cops found a small baggie of cocaine on him, and he was booked for possession.

The indecent assault and battery is a felony. The coke possession is a misdemeanor. Wopat’s being arraigned Thursday.

No word yet from Wopat’s rep, although the theater says he WILL be performing in this afternoon’s matinee. I can only imagine he’ll get a somewhat chilly reception from the Massachusetts theatergoers, who probably frown on coked-up Hollywood types groping the local production assistants.

UPDATE: TMZ headline: “Tom Wopat Charged with Sticking Finger Up Woman’s Butt Crack”

Tom Wopat allegedly grabbed a woman’s butt and put his finger between her butt cheeks, and that’s why he was arrested for felony indecent assault.

According to the police report, obtained by TMZ, Wopat was rehearsing his show, “42nd Street,” at the Reagle Theatre in Waltham, MA on July 23 when a woman on the set claims he walked behind her and she felt his hand grab her butt. She also says she felt his fingers go between her butt cheeks.

She complained to one of the honchos about the incident, and Wopat was confronted. According to the police report, he denied touching the woman and said, “F*** them all.”
There are 2 other incidents mentioned in the police report, both occurring during rehearsals. In one case a woman says he came up from behind her and wrapped his arm around her hip and lower waist, pulling her into him. In another instance a woman says he peeled sunburned skin off her arm.

Um, Ew.

Wopat told cops he flirts and likes to be friendly, but never did anything untoward.

As for the drug charge, cops say when they booked Wopat they found a plastic bag containing what they believe was cocaine in his front pocket, along with a blue straw. Cops say they searched Wopat’s vehicle and found baggies inside, one of which contained what they believe is also cocaine.

The police report also says one of the honchos in the show reprimanded Wopat for showing up to rehearsal under the influence

Kennedy Center Honorees Divided About Accepting the Award from Trump

It’s an interesting question. Would you attend the Kennedy Center Honors award ceremony if you were nominated… and Trump was president presiding over it? Or would you decline the offer (and miss the biggest accolade of your career)? Or would you accept the award but then use your speech to talk shit about our president? That’s the quandary facing this year’s nominees. It’s the first ceremony of the Trump era, and this year’s group has some VERY different ideas about how they are going to handle the situation.

Gloria Estefan, a proud Cuban immigrant, plans to use her platform to speak on behalf of immigrants everywhere.

Via The New York Times:

Ms. Estefan, a seven-time Grammy Award winner, said she looked forward to speaking with Mr. Trump because it was “the perfect opportunity to make clear and express” her views. Ms. Estefan is a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom and Ellis Island Medal of Honor, and her pursuit of the American dream is the subject of the Broadway musical “On Your Feet!”

“Mr. President, as a proud immigrant of this country, it’s very important for me that you see the wonderful contributions we have made,” Ms. Estefan said she planned to say at the White House reception. “We have seen a lot of anti-immigrant backlash this year, so for us, it may hold even more beauty than for someone who has lived here all their lives. To get this kind of award is so American.”

Icon of ’70s television (All In the Family, Maude, The Jeffersons) Norman Lear has decided to accept the award, but plans to skip the White House reception, “a rare move in the Honors’ 39-year history.”

“This is a presidency that has chosen to neglect totally the arts and humanities — deliberately defund them — and that doesn’t rest pleasantly with me,” said Mr. Lear, the creative force behind pivotal sitcoms that created political conversation in American households. He also founded People for the American Way, a nonprofit organization advocating against right-wing extremism.

LL Cool J is just happy he’s being recognized, and doesn’t care by who.

“To knock the door down for a new genre — the word is just ‘dope!’” he said. “To be able to come from the corner of Farmers Boulevard in Queens, banging on a garbage can, all the way to the Kennedy Center Honors, that’s a long journey.”

He said he never considered skipping the events.

“I don’t have any stunts planned. I’m not saying I need to be there backslapping and all of that, but this time, this one ain’t about him,” he said, referring to Mr. Trump. “I’m not going to block my blessings or let the political divide stop me from embracing my art. I’m banking on the goodness and the optimism of people to say: ‘You know what? I get it. Let this guy have this honor.’”

Then there’s Lionel Richie, who is golly-gosh-dang excited his buddy Trump will be the guy honoring him.

“In the world of entertainment, I’ve got to tell you, Mr. Trump has been front and center,” Mr. Richie said. “That’s just what he does. You can’t miss him! Listen, when you say, do you want to sit next to the president or not — are you kidding me? He’s the president!”

Soo.. that runs the gamut of reactions, huh?

Will you be tuning in this year?

After Justin Bieber cancelled the rest of his Purpose World Tour dates to rest up, find Christ, and maybe ride some bikes, his fans were understandably upset. This morning, the petite pop star posted a long, rambling message on Instagram explaining his motives. It needs to be read in full to appreciate it’s gorgeousness.

All that gobbledygook about being “sustainable” and how blessed he is to have a voice in this world and not letting his past dictate his future? That all sounds like the handiwork of Pastor Carl, his mentor from Hillsong Church. Let’s revisit their rather intense friendship in the pics below.

#OnThisDay: American Jesse Owens Wins 1936 Olympic Gold

August 3, 1936Jesse Owens wins Olympic Gold in the 100 Meters Race

In 1931, the International Olympic Committee awarded the 1936 Summer Olympic Games to Berlin. The choice brought Germany’s return to the world community after its isolation in after defeat in WW I.

Two years later, Nazi Party leader Adolf Hitler became chancellor of Germany and quickly turned the nation’s fragile democracy into a one-party authoritarian government that persecuted Jews, Gypsies, Homosexuals, and all political opponents. The Nazi claimed control of all aspects of German life, including sports.

German imagery of the 1930s served to promote the myth of Aryan superiority and physical prowess. German artists idealized the country’s athletes’ muscles and heroic strength and accentuated their Aryan facial features.

In August 1936, Jesse Owens arrived in Berlin to compete for the USA in the Summer Olympics. Hitler was using the games to show the world his new Nazi Germany. Nazi propaganda promoted concepts of Aryan racial superiority and depicted Africans and people of African descent as being inferior. Owens countered this by winning four gold medals.

Most Americans assumed that black athletes would be treated badly in Berlin, but 100,000 Berliners chanted “Jes-say O-vens” as he won the 100 Meter race. Owens and his black teammates enjoyed freedom of movement and equality that they didn’t have in the USA.

International Olympic boycott movements had threatened the games. Consequently, the Olympic Village was integrated and all racist propaganda was suspended for the duration of the games. For those two weeks in August 1936, Hitler hid Germany’s racist, militaristic agenda while hosting the Summer Olympics, giving many foreign spectators and journalists an image of a peaceful, tolerant Germany.

Having rejected the idea of boycott of the 1936 Olympics, the USA missed the opportunity to take a stand that might have slowed Hitler’s policies and bolstered resistance to Nazi tyranny.

After the Games, Germany’s expansionist policies and the persecution of Jews and other “enemies of the state” brought about WW II and the Holocaust.

Owens achievement of setting three world records in less than an hour at the 1935 Big Ten track meet in Ann Arbor has been called the greatest 45 minutes ever in sports history.

But, 81 years ago, in Berlin, Owens won four gold medals: 100 meters, 200 meters, long jump, and 4×100 meter relay. He was the most successful athlete at the Berlin games and was credited with single-handedly crushing Hitler’s myth of Aryan supremacy.

Nazi Albert Speer wrote:

“Hitler was highly annoyed by the series of triumphs by the marvelous colored American runner, Jesse Owens. People whose antecedents came from the jungle were primitive’, Hitler said with a shrug;’their physiques were stronger than those of civilized whites and hence should be excluded from future games’.”

During the Olympics, Owens stayed in the same German hotel as whites, while in the USA at the time, African-Americans had to stay in segregated hotels while traveling.

Owens returned home a national hero, but a black national hero. He and his family had trouble finding a hotel room in Manhattan. The Olympic Champion was forced to use a service elevator to attend the banquet in his honor. Olympic success made Owens famous, but it could not make him free.

When Owens went to the podium after winning the 100 Meters, Hiltler gave him a “friendly little Nazi salute”. Franklin D Roosevelt never invited Owens to the White House or acknowledged his triumphs in Berlin, and that really hurt the Olympic champion:

“Hitler didn’t snub me, it was our president who snubbed me. The president didn’t even send me a telegram.”

After the Olympics, Owens struggled to make a living and had to participate in stunt races against dogs, motorcycles and horses between doubleheaders of Negro League baseball games. Owens:

“People said it was degrading for an Olympic champion to run against a horse, but what was I supposed to do? I had four gold medals, but you can’t eat four gold medals”.

Owens won those gold medals wearing shoes given to him by Adolf  Dassler, the founder of Adidas who was a Nazi. Dassler didn’t care that much about Nazi propaganda as he did his athletic shoe business.

Owens and the German silver medalist in the Long Jump, Luz Long, became friends during the 1936 Olympics. Long congratulated and embraced Owens after his win. They corresponded until Long was killed by the Allies in Sicily in 1943. Long was just 30-years-old. Owens said:

“It took a lot of courage for him to befriend me in front of Hitler. You can melt down all the medals and cups I have and they wouldn’t be a plating on the 24-karat friendship that I felt for Luz Long at that moment”.
