Bret Easton Ellis Finds Weasel-Faced WH Senior Advisor Stephen Miller “Completely Compelling” and Wants to Write a Novel About Him

American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis tweeted this morning that he finds dickish White House advisor Stephen Miller ‘completely compelling’ and wants to write a novel about him. This comes after after Miller’s heated exchange with CNN’s Jim Acosta over Trump’s new immigration policy that polarized cable audiences yesterday afternoon. (Watch the whole thing here)

Following the exchange, Ellis tweeted a picture of Miller and Acosta from the briefing, writing: ‘Why do I find Stephen Miller completely compelling and want to write a novel about him? Why do I not want to write a novel about Jim Acosta?’

Twitter was quick to answer:

Via The Daily Mail:

In February, Ellis spoke with the Irish Examiner and said that he’s tired of all the protesting going on surrounding Trump.

‘I didn’t vote Trump, I’m just saying the hysteria is bothering me a lot more than the reality of what he’s doing,’ Ellis said.

Ellis said he was mostly annoyed with all of the celebrities that have been continuing to speak out against Trump, like Meryl Streep.
Streep used her speech at the Golden Globes to rail against Trump, which Ellis says is exactly ‘hashtag why Trump won’.

‘When celebrities become these kind of strident, political advisers, wagging their finger, really people don’t buy it.

‘It did not help Hillary Clinton at all having this mountain of celebrities on her side. Rejection, rejection,’ be said.

Ellis was somewhat of a soothsayer during the campaign, tweeting in February 2016 about how friends in heavily-blue Los Angeles were planning to vote for Trump.
‘Just back from a dinner in West Hollywood: shocked the majority of the table was voting for Trump but they would never admit it publicly,’ Ellis wrote.

#BornThisDay: Barack Obama

Photograph from The White House, Lawrence Jackson

August 4, 1961Barack Hussein Obama II:

“No matter who you are or what you look like, how you started off or how and who you love, America is a place where you can write your own destiny.”

Donald J. Trump in 2014:

“Can you believe that, with all of the problems and difficulties facing the U.S., President Obama spent the day playing golf. Worse than Carter.”

Within hours of his inauguration, the current POTUS’ people had taken down the LGBTQ page on the White House website. Within a few months of taking power, the new administration began to chip away at LGBTQ rights. I find it very difficult to hold the sort of hope I had when Obama was in office.

Barack Obama is the best Presidential pal a LGBTQ person could ever have. He was the twice elected 44th President of the USA; in 2008, winning more votes than any candidate in history. He was the first Hawaiian to hold the office. He is intelligent and handsome, with a fierce, beautiful wife, two lovely daughters and two cute dogs. They live in their new home in Washington, D.C.’s Kalorama neighborhood.

Before becoming the Leader Of The Free World, Obama was a pot smoking college student at Columbia University, then a graduate of Harvard Law School where he served as president of the Harvard Law Review, a community organizer, and a professor of Constitutional Law at University Of Chicago.

In two elections, he aggressively sought campaign donations from the LGBTQ citizens of our country and he received the large majority of gay people’s votes in 2008 and 2012. LGBTQ people makeup at least 10% of the electorate and I am certain that nearly everyone in the USA has a sibling, parent, cousin, friend, neighbor or co-worker that is gay. What politicians say about LGBTQ Americans matters and Obama was the LGBTQ friendliest President in history, in most ways, the only friendly one. Since his first days in office, Obama showed his opponents that he is tight with the gays, appointing more gay people as judges, foreign ambassadors and other top government jobs than anyone before him or after his presidency.

At the end of 2015, Obama nominated Eric Kenneth Fanning to be U.S. Secretary of the Army. Fanning was confirmed by the Senate in spring 2016. Fanning was the 22nd Secretary of the Army, the largest service branch of the US military, and the first openly gay head of any military service. Fanning does not serve the current POTUS. Obama:

“Eric Fanning brings many years of proven experience and exceptional leadership to this new role. I am grateful for his commitment to our men and women in uniform, and I am confident he will help lead America’s Soldiers with distinction.”

“Every single American, gay, straight, lesbian, bisexual, transgender- every single American deserves to be treated equally in the eyes of the law and in the eyes of our society. It’s a pretty simple proposition.”

Here are a just a few of the ways Obama has contributed to improving LGBTQ lives:

He worked towards and protecting the Rights of LGBTQ People around the world. In 2015, he scolded his fellow Kenyan, President Uhuru Kenyatta, about Kenya’s Gay Rights record. Under that country’s law, sex between men is illegal and punishable with 15 years imprisonment. Kenyan leaders had encouraged Obama not to discuss Gay Rights on his first trip to their country. Obama:

When you start treating people differently not because of any harm they are doing to anybody, but because they are different, that’s the path whereby freedoms begin to erode, and bad things happen.”

Obama has worked at preventing bullying against LGBTQ Students, along with former Vice-President Joseph Biden, and assorted officials in their White House, they recorded a series of Dan Savage’s It Gets Better videos that take on the issues of bullying and suicide among LGBTQ youth.

His Administration has worked to ensure LGBTQ Equality in Housing and Crime Prevention, helping queer Americans get mortgages, and ensured Equality for LGBTQ Federal Government Employees.

Against terrible odds, Obama actively addressed Health Care disparities with The Affordable Care Act, bringing hope and healing to the hurting, funding communities for programs that address tobacco control, obesity prevention, HIV-related health issues, better nutrition and physical activity for all people, along with expanding access to health coverage. The ACA works to provide all Americans have secure, stable, and affordable health insurance. Because of the law, insurers can no longer turn someone away just because they are gay, bisexual, or transgender. His administration developed and implemented a National HIV/AIDS Strategy, funding The Centers For Disease Control And Prevention with $200 million in grants for HIV prevention for transgendered people and gay and bi men of color. He made sure that The Department of Health And Human Services requires all hospitals receiving Medicare or Medicaid funds (nearly every hospital in America) to allow visitation rights for LGBTQ patients. Obama also directed HHS to ensure that medical decision-making rights of LGBTQ patients are respected.

Obama signed historic Hate Crimes Legislation, ended legal defense of the Defense Of Marriage Act (DOMA), repealed Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, and championed Marriage Equality. Each year he was in office, he wrote and posted a proclamation making June Gay Pride And History Month.

In July 2014, he signed an Executive Order prohibiting federal contractors from discriminating against any employee or applicant for employment “because of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or national origin,” continuing to set an example as a model employer that does right by its workers. The current POTUS rescinded this order.

Obama strongly supported legislative efforts to ban the use of Conversion Therapy against minors and he released a Substance Abuse And Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) study condemning the practice.

Obama is the first President to use the term  “Gay” in any Inaugural Address, declaring the movement for Equality to be part of the pantheon of USA’s Civil Rights struggles:

“Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law. For if we are truly created equal then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal, as well.”

He also made an additional reference in the speech about LGBTQ Equality. He placed The Stonewall Riots as a signature event in the Civil Rights movement, putting the 1969 event in the ranking with historical turning points in the battles for Women’s Rights and Racial Equality:

We, the people, declare today that the most evident of truths- that all of us are created equal- is the star that guides us still, just as it guided our forebears through Seneca Falls and Selma and Stonewall.”

In June 2016, Obama designated a new national monument at the historic site of the 1969 Stonewall Riots in NYC. The new Stonewall National Monument protects the area where the queers rose up against police harassment and sparked the modern LGBTQ Civil Rights movement in the USA. It is the first official National Park Service site dedicated to telling the history of LGBTQ Americans, and it happened just days before the first year anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court decision guaranteeing Marriage Equality in all 50 states. The Stonewall National Monument will permanently protect Christopher Park, a historic community park where Christopher Street, West 4th Street and Grove Street all meet directly across from the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village. The monument’s boundary encompasses eight acres of land, including the surrounding streets and sidewalks that were the site of the 1969 Stonewall Riots.

Obama is also one cool cat.  With an easy-going demeanor and an informal way of interacting with others, some tight-ass Republicans and other haters claim that he can be inappropriate, even offensive. But for most of us, we appreciate his level head, sly candor and bracing honesty.

As we heard at the Democratic Convention in Philadelphia last summer, Obama is a dynamic, inspiring speaker with a smart sense of humor peppered with pop culture references, crack comedic timing and an incredible intellect.

I think he should have a late-night talk show on Bravo where he and guests would hang out in a re-creation of the Oval Office outfitted with a DJ Station, a Ms. Pacman, and craft beer on tap, with everyone belting out Al Green tunes. He should be a guest judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race. I could be his sidekick/announcer and he would let me call him Barry.

The Obama Presidential Center will be hosted by the University of Chicago, and will be located in Jackson Park on the South Side of Chicago.

Obama called the Republican Senate’s Health Care plan: “a massive transfer of wealth from middle-class and poor families to the richest people in America”.” I am alive today because of The Affordable Care Act, as if I didn’t love Obama enough.

Your Daily Cry: Chris Cornell’s 12-Year-Old Daughter Sings “Hallelujah” In Honor of her Father

“Hallelujah” always makes me cry anyway, but after THIS I was an absolute puddle.

Toni Cornell, Chris Cornell’s 12-year-old daughter, appeared on Good Morning America this morning, taking the stage with OneRepublic in Central Park to perform a moving rendition of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.” OneRepublic was performing in place of Linkin Park, who had been scheduled to play prior to lead sing Chester Bennington’s death.

OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder spoke to “GMA” co-host Michael Strahan beforehand, saying they chose to play “Hallelujah” because Bennington sang it at Chris’ funeral and it is “arguably one of the greatest songs written in the last 50 years.”

And by God, she knocks it out of the park.

Watch below. And have a box of tissues ready.

Via HuffPo:

Toni told Strahan it was “an honor” to perform for her dad and Chester before the co-host praised her for her bravery. Once the performance began, Toni and Tedder had the crowd in tears.

Toni’s father died in May of this year. In a statement, the singer’s representative Brian Bumbery called the rocker’s suicide “sudden and unexpected.”

Bennington was found dead on July 20 ― what would have been Cornell’s 53rd birthday ― in his home in California. The singer’s death was also ruled a suicide.

The two musicians were friends for years, and even toured together. Following Chris Cornell’s death, Bennington wrote a touching letter to the Soundgarden singer, saying, “I’m still weeping, with sadness, as well as gratitude for having shared some very special moments with you and your beautiful family.”

As Bennington’s Linkin Park bandmate Mike Shinoda recalled in a May interview, Bennington was deeply affected by his friend’s death. When Linkin Park decided to dedicate a song to Chris during one of their performances following Chris’ death, Bennington was overcome with emotion and had trouble getting through the performance.

Grave Robbing Grandson & Friends Charged with Digging Up Granny’s Grave

James Howard had long heard tales that his late Grandmother Emily had been buried with the family jewels, and that got him to thinking: What the hell good does that do HER? Especially when he and his friends needed money NOW? Only one thing to do, he reasoned. Go a-digging.

Authorities in Kentucky say a passerby found Emily Howard’s coffin in Stacy’s Cemetery unearthed and exposed, but still closed – probably because the would-be thieves were unable to unlock it.

“When we got here they had definitely dug the grave up until the top of the vault and everything was exposed,” Martin County Sheriff John Kirk told WYMT News.

Tuesday, police arrested James Howard, 33, of Inez, Kentucky, and his friend Tea Jay Luster, 26, also of Inez.

Police say both men confessed to involvement in the crime. James Howard had told Luster valuables had been interred with his deceased grandmother 15 years ago, although  family members dispute that  saying the deceased woman was not buried with any jewelry. All that was reportedly buried with her was a porcelain doll and pictures.

But hey- You might be able to get $10 for the doll!

Emily Howard’s grandson-in-law George Jude told WSAZ News that the family was devastated when police said a relative had confessed to the crime.

“They had to be in a bad mindset,” Jude said. “Anybody in their right mind I don’t think would’ve been up there digging out a grave. They put in a lot of work. It’s crazy.”

The distraught relative implied that drugs could be a possible motive.

“The devil’s got so many people blinded with the drugs and the things that nothing will surprise you, they’ll do anything to get what they want,” Jude told WYMT News.

A third suspect, Jennifer Luster, 35, is accused of driving James Howard and Tea Luster to and from the grave. Tea and Jennifer Luster are reportedly husband and wife.

All three suspects have been charged with violating a grave, a felony offense.

James Woods Predicts Civil War if Trump Is Removed from Office

The ever-odious James Wood went on a Twitter rant this morning, decrying Democrat’s (!) dirty tricks, hailing Our Great Leader, and predicting the downfall of America if, God forbid, Trump should be removed from office. What a prig.

You may recall earlier this month, the ultra-conservative actor/hate-monger viciously attacked a gender-nonconforming child on Twitter.

Yuck.

Hey, Seth MacFarlane, you still think this guy is a hoot on Family Guy? Still want to use him every season? I’m done with people in Hollywood who still give this guy paychecks.

GROAN: Caitlyn Jenner Scoots Around Town in MAGA Hat

I just can’t with this one.

From TMZ:

The Kardashian family believes Caitlyn Jenner has betrayed the transgender community by sticking with Donald Trump after the President vowed to ban transgender soldiers from the military.

Sources with first-hand knowledge tell us, Caitlyn’s latest stunt — parading around Malibu wearing a “Make America Great Again” cap is an affront to the community she claims to champion. The family believes Caitlyn promotes transgender rights in a very selective way — when it helps her.

They think she’s become heartless by flaunting views that hurt the LGBT community and it reaffirms they want nothing to do with her.

As one source said … “Caitlyn has always been about Caitlyn.”

Agreeing with the Kardashians on this one. Which is a strange thing to write.

To Do, TONIGHT: Visit a 24-Hour Pop-Up Porn Theater in LA

Ah, the lost art of trolling porn theaters. The smell! The sounds! The MEN! Nothing like it in the world. Of course, porn theaters have mostly vanished from gay life, since the invention of computer porn. Most millennials now know very little about cruising in an analogue world. The queer film organization Dirty Looks is trying to change that. They’re here to give us a little history lesson. TONIGHT (Aug 4), from midnight until Saturday night at midnight, they’re staging a pop-up porn theater showing non-stop vintage gay porn (and some lezsploitation and queer art fare) from the pre-VHS era of late 70s early 80s. Full on fun old-school porn – in a theatre! It’s art! It’s hot! Think old-school gay cinema – Casey Donovan! Jack Wrangler! Wooohooooo!

The arty queer film folks at Dirty Looks, return to Los Angeles for a 24-hour marathon of classic beefcake X-rated action taking over a honest-to-goodness theater! Yes, you actually go sit in the dark and watch gay sex WITH OTHER PEOPLE. MADNESS! (Also, fun!)

It’s basically a tribute to old-school gay porn theaters and the hot flicks they screened back in the day. As the curators put it, for this humpy movie marathon “the programming will promiscuously alternate between XXX works and avant-garde fair, then considered too personal or tempestuous for standard cinema screens.” So you’ll get classics starring ’70s and early ’80s gay porn gods like Casey Donovan and Jack Wrangler, some even featuring a soundtrack by legendary disco god Patrick Cowley.

Here’s a bit more about the saucy celluloid action coming your way. “Sesión Continua will take place at Son of Semele, a 36-seat theater in Historic Filipinotown (near Silver Lake) that has been operating since 2003. We want to convey the intimacy and appetites that animated original porn theaters like the Park or the Coronet Theater, with a limited seating that calls for closeness and an extended program that lubricates the flow of audiences into the theater.”

Here’s more info:

It was this week’s mega-viral sensation: A recent Men.com scene featuring Jake Porter and Jaxton Wheeler, in which they surreptitiously fuck in front of a poor girl who’s just trying to enjoy her salad.

“Right in front of my salad?” she asks when she realizes what’s happening, and BOOM!, a star was born. The phrase immediately started trending on Twitter (alongside the equally meme-worthy “Reclaiming My Time“).

Watch below.

Now NewNowNext is exclusively reporting that Nikki V (a.k.a. Mrs. Romaine) has been approached by Men.com about another role.

“[We’ve] reached out to the break-out gif star for another appearance, and she has agreed to return for another scene in the very near future.”

And with that, we end the week on a high note.

(And thank you NewNowNext for your dedicated reporting. VIVA LA FOURTH ESTATE! FUCK JEFF SESSIONS!)

#LGBTQMustWatch: “Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later”!

$

Wet Hot American Summer (2001) was one incredible comic surprise when I first saw it, an overlooked gem.  It’s an absurdist spoof of summer camp films like Little Darlings (1980), Poison Ivy (19850 and Meatballs (1979).

How can you not love with a movie that has a pep talk from a talking can of vegetables or dramatic chase scene where the person doing the chasing is thwarted by a single barrel of hay in the middle of a wide-open road? Oh, and there is also a hilariously rapid descent into the underworld of drugs and despair by the kids spending an hour away from camp in town. What other film would feature Amy Poehler and Bradley Copper directing and choreographing a truly demented camp talent show; or Michael Ian Black marrying Cooper in a ceremony in a lake? How about a Shakespearean-themed barn dance?

The film features a large ensemble cast, including: Janeane Garofalo, David Hyde Pierce, Molly Shannon, Paul Rudd, Christopher Meloni, Michael Showalter, Elizabeth Banks, Ken Marino, Michael Ian Black, Cooper, and Poehler.

It takes takes place during the last full day at a summer camp in 1981; director/co-writer David Wain has said that he was inspired by films like Nashville (1975), Dazed And Confused (1993) and Do The Right Thing (1983) that take place in one very contained time period and have different characters. Because of the film’s relatively small budget, the cast was paid very little; Rudd has stated that he is uncertain if he received any money for the film.

Janeane Garofalo officiates at Bradley Cooper and Michael Ian Black’s wedding, Eureka Pictures

When first released, Wet Hot American Summer was a critical and commercial failure, but it developed a cult following on video. More and more people talked about how it was a favorite film. In summer 2015, Netflix released an eight-episode prequel, Wet Hot American Summer: First Day Of Camp starring most of the film’s original cast, plus adding: Jon Hamm, Kristen Wiig, Chris Pine, John Slattery, Jordan Peel, Josh Charles, Lake Bell, Michael Cera, Jayma Mays and Randall Park to the madness.

Tonight, August 4, the entire gang, well, almost the entire gang, is back for Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later, a third installment in a comedy franchise that started with a film hardly anyone saw when it first came out in 2001 and keeps gaining speed.

This chapter features bad 1990s hair and fashions as the gang returns in 1991, their lives as messed up as ever, unaware that powerful forces are plotting to destroy the camp that they love so much. Even that talking can of vegetables is back!

New cast members include: Alyssa Milano, Dax Shepard, Mark Feuerstein and Marlo Thomas.

After watching the first three episodes today, I kept wondering when did Chris Pine become the most adorable actor ever? Pine is having a really good summer, co-starring as a hero in the blockbuster Wonder Woman and now playing a stoner in this project. He steals the show.

Co-writer and cast member Michael Showalter is also making a big splash this summer as the director of the hit film, The Big Sick, with Kumail Nanjiani, Holly Hunter and Ray Romano. His film from last year, Hello, My Name Is Doris with Sally Field is a must watch.

Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later hilariously breaks the fourth wall on occasion and references the film and the earlier Netflix series. One character tells another that he’ll see her again in the next episode. An original cast member removes his fake mustache while the cameras are still rolling and leaves, taking his Emmy Award with him.

Now Streaming on Netflix.

#BornThisDay: Actor, Tom Drake

From Meet Me In St. Louis, MGM

August 5, 1918– He was born as Alfred Sinclair Alderdice in Brooklyn. At some point in his stage career and after several other name changes, he landed on Tom Drake as his professional moniker. You may not have heard of him, but Drake made many films beginning in 1940 and continuing in to the mid-1970s. He also had many a guest shot on television series.

Drake was a deeply closeted gay guy and he was easily given to despair. He was never known to have had a serious romance, although he bedded both Rock Hudson and James Dean. As an adult he lived with a profound drinking problem and he lived a life of fear with having his gayness found out. Sound familiar?

1942 and 1943 were years of tremendous change at MGM. Most of the great Golden Age stars groomed by Head of Production, Irving Thalberg, during the 1930s had left the studio. Clark GableRobert TaylorMickey RooneyRobert Montgomery, and James Stewart had joined the US Army, Air Force or Navy and were absent from Hollywood during WW II. Greta Garbo and Norma Shearer walked away from the business. Joan CrawfordRosalind RussellEleanor PowellMyrna Loy, and Margaret Sullivan fulfilled their contracts and then signed with other studios, worked as independents, or moved to work on Broadway.

The greatest of stars were being replaced by young, fresh, wholesome “boy and girl next door” types: June AllysonVan JohnsonRobert WalkerEsther Williams and Tom Drake. Drake was enormously popular with teenage film fans for a couple of years, but he was eventually overshadowed by the smoother Van Johnson.

Drake did appear in more than 40 films, doing good work in Mrs. Parkington (1944) and The Green Years (1946). He was put into Words And Music, the most expensive MGM production of 1948. Ironically, Drake was cast as the very heterosexual composer Richard Rodgers opposite Mickey Rooney’s Lorenz Hart, the lyricist who was gay in real life. He is actually good in the role, but the film is overproduced and purports to tell the life stories of the famous songwriting partners with a screenplay that is 100% fictional.

Words And Music does contain some of Rodgers’ and Hart’s great songs: My Heart Stood StillThe Lady Is A Tramp, and Where Or When taken from their best Broadway shows: Babes In ArmsPal Joey, and On Your Toes. MGM stars perform the various musical numbers, including: Judy GarlandGene KellyLena Horne and Cyd Charisse. These great stars’ take on those songs make this film worth viewing, but the screenplay got the story all wrong.

Drake had his best role as John Truett, the boy next door, in Vincente Minnelli’s classic musical film Meet Me In St. Louis (1944) opposite his friend Judy Garland.

Drake returned to the stage in 1952, appearing briefly on Broadway and touring in the WW II comedy Stalag 17Elizabeth Taylor, always helping out her gay friends, used her clout at MGM and had him cast as her brother in Raintree County (1957).

Later that year Drake went to England for a starring part in the film Date With Disaster (also the title of a chapter in my memoirs). He remained in Europe, living most of the time in Rome. Drake returned to California with his alcohol problem totally out of control and smoking a pack of cigarettes each day. Yet by the mid-1960s, a determined Drake somehow managed to kick both habits. He continued his career by working in telelvision with the occasional film role too: The Sandpiper (1965) with his pal Elizabeth Taylor, The Singing Nun (1966) and The Red Tomahawk (1967).

Drake never seemed to live up to his early potential, but he continued into the 1970s doing small roles in prestige pictures, the occasional lead in a low-budget film, along with guest-spots on television series in almost every year between 1950 and 1980.

A classic example of how a talented actor could fall between the cracks of the studio contract system, Drake spent a few of his final years with a job as a used car salesman, but as his health slipped, and he had to give up working altogether. He was taken by pneumonia, alone and mostly forgotten, in a tiny apartment in Torrance, California in 1982.

An anecdote: Drake loved garlic. The garlic caused a problem while making a film with Donna Reed. Drake had consumed a dinner heavy with garlic the previous night and the first shot of the morning called for him to be romantic with Reed, dancing and singing softly in her ear. Reed strenuously objected to the strong odor that seemed to exude from Drake’s every pore. It made her physically ill. Production was suspended for the day and Drake was ordered not to ever eat garlic again until the film wrapped. Reed forgave Drake, joking about the incident. They remained friends the rest of their lives, even dining out on occasion.

August 6, 1911Lucille Ball:

”The secret to staying young is to live honestly, eat slowly, and lie about your age.”

Thought of as a dizzy sitcom redhead with big showbiz aspirations, Lucille Ball was, in fact, an industry powerhouse, a television pioneer, and not really a redhead. She was noted for her impeccable comic timing, deft pantomime abilities and an endearing talent for making the outrageous believable.

At 15-years-old, she went to Manhattan to study acting. From the first, she was repeatedly told she had no talent and should return home to Jamestown, NY. She tried and failed to get into the chorus of Broadway musicals.

She worked as a model, waitress, and as a soda jerk in a Broadway drugstore before finally landing a spot in The Ziegfeld Follies. She won national attention as the Chesterfield Cigarette Girl in 1933. This got her to Hollywood as a chorus girl in Samuel Goldwyn Productions’ Roman Scandals (1933). She went from Ziegfeld Girl to one of the Goldwyn Girls.

For the next two years, she played unbilled and bit roles in 25 films and made two-reel comedies The Three Stooges. But, she moved out from the crowd of young starlets to supporting roles. She was put under contract to RKO and she received several small roles, including one in Top Hat (1935) with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.

After seven years at RKO, Ball finally landed starring roles in B-pictures and an occasional good role in an A-picture like playing a cynical young actor in Stage Door (1937), a gold-digging stripper in Dance, Girl, Dance (1940), a handicapped narcissist in the noir The Big Street (1942), and a tough-talking secretary in The Dark Corner (1946).

While filming the musical Too Manny Girls (1940), she met and fell madly in love with a young Cuban actor/musician named Desi Arnaz. Despite different backgrounds, personalities, lifestyles, religions and ages (he was six years younger), the couple had a passionate romance, they eloped in 1940.

Lucy soon switched to MGM, where she got better roles in films in a series of musicals, but she never seemed to move from actor to movie star.

Ball:

”I never cared about the movies because they cast me wrong.”

In 1948, because the money was too good to pass-up, she took a starring role in the radio comedy My Favorite Husband, where she played the scatterbrained wife of a Midwestern banker.

In 1950, CBS offered to turn it into a television series, but Ball insisted that they also hire her husband. CBS executives objected, saying that the public would never accept the team of an American redhead and a Cuban bandleader with a heavy accent. To prove them wrong, Ball and Arnaz went on a nationwide vaudeville tour with a 20-minute act. They produced a 30-minute pilot with their own money. CBS brass were won over. The even convinced the network to sign over the rights and creative control of the series to them, and work began on the most popular and universally beloved sitcom of all time.

I Love Lucy premiered on October 15, 1951, and within a few months millions of Americans tuned in every Monday evening to watch the zany antics of the Ricardos and their best friends, Fred and Ethel Mertz, played to perfection by William Frawley and Vivian Vance.

It was one of the first shows to be filmed rather than performed live, making it possible to get a high-quality print of each episode for rebroadcast, compared with the poor-quality kinescopes of the era. This change eventually led to a general shift of television production from NYC to Hollywood. I Love Lucy was also one the first shows to be filmed before an audience. Ball and her Cuban husband pioneered the three-camera technique of filming sitcoms (the standard for decades), and the concept of syndicating television programs. As head of Desilu Studios, Ball became the first woman to own her own film studio.

In the episode Lucy Goes To The Hospital, Lucy Ricardo gives birth to her son, Little Ricky, after a predictably nutty sequence of events. Twelve hours before the broadcast, Ball gave birth to Desi Arnaz, Jr, although the episode had been filmed two months earlier. It was an unprecedented pairing of a fictional pregnancy with the real-life pregnancy of an actor; real-time pregnancy had never been depicted on American television. When the episode premiered on January 19, 1953, 72% of all American homes with television sets tuned in. It received higher ratings than the inauguration of Dwight D. Eisenhower the next day. The script had to be reviewed by a rabbi, a minister, and a priest to make sure it would not be offensive. The sex of the baby was kept secret until the episode aired. When Ball actually had a boy as Lucy did in the script, headlines proclaimed: “Lucy sticks to script: a boy it is!”

I Love Lucy was the number one show in the nation, but the couple sought a less demanding schedule and ended the series in 1957 after 179 episodes. For three more years they produced hour long, high-budget, around-the-world specials titled The Luci-Desi Comedy Hour. Their collaboration ended with their divorce in 1960.

Two years after the divorce, Ball revived the character of ”Lucy”, playing a widow in The Lucy Show until 1968, then did Here’s Lucy from 1968 to 1974. In these two series, Ball was joined by her two children Lucie and Desi Jr., her longtime friend Vance and Gale Gordon, who succeeded Arnaz as her main foil. Ball always sought superior writers, followed their advice, and paid close attention to production details.

Ball was not just one of the great comic actors of television, and powerhouse in the biz, she was also a supporter of Gay Rights. In an especially candid interview for People Magazine in 1980, an era when LGBTG characters were not often depicted on television, she was asked how she felt about the burgeoning Gay Rights Movement, Ball answered:

“It’s perfectly all right with me. Some of the most gifted people I’ve ever met or read about are homosexual. How can you knock it?”

It was reported that she was surprised and delighted to find out that a gay bar in West Hollywood played I Love Lucy episodes on video monitors.

I think Ball is a true Gay Icon. LGBTQ folks love her not just for her sitcoms, but for her work in gay favorite films like the always quotable Stage Door, where she worked with fellow icons Katharine Hepburn, Ginger Rogers, Eve Arden and Ann Miller.

There are few moments in film as campy was the cat fight between Ball and  Maureen O’Hara in Dance Girl, Dance (watch it below), directed by pioneering female, and openly lesbian, Dorothy Arzner.

Many a guy guys’ brunch has been spent discussing Ball’s preformance in the notorious 1974 film version of the musical Mame with Gay Icon Bea Arthur. Gay director George Cukor was originally set to direct it with Bette Davis as Mame’s pal Ver Charles. But, Ball broke her leg skiing and filming was delayed. Cukor was replaced by Gene Saks, who cast his wife Arthur who had played Vera on Broadway opposite Angela Lansbury. It is also rumored that Ball had the great Madeline Kahn fired from playing Agnes Gooch. Musical Theatre fanatics continue to debate the casting of this clunker.

Ball stayed loyal to her friends from her early days in Hollywood. On The Lucy Show, Ball cast pal Joan Crawford to play herself in an episode. Ball caught Crawford with vodka in her dressing and after she showed up late on the set, threatened to fire her. Crawford was on time for the rest of the shooting.

For the post-Stonewall generation, Ball makes for a most excellent Gay Icon. She isn’t tragic like Judy Garland, or tart-tongued like Bette Davis or monstrous like Crawford. Ball was beautiful and funny, a winning combo.

Ball started me on a lifetime of television addiction. I Love Lucy is my earliest television memory. It was the very first show I simply couldn’t live without. I still watch it. Once while I was deep into chemotherapy in 2014, I watched 11 episodes in a row (the very odd, but funny Connecticut season). One evening this winter, The Husband and I watched her film with Arnaz, The Long, Long Trailer (1953), and we talked about how our love for her never fades or falters. As the video below proves, she was even Mod in swinging 1960s London. I Love Lucy.

#FlashBack77: Andy Gibb’s “I Just Want To Be Your Everything” Was Number One 40 Years Ago

I Just Want to Be Your Everything was written by Barry Gibb and recorded by his brother Andy Gibb. It reached number one the first week of August 1977, and remained on the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks, and then again in the third week of September 1977. It was Gibb’s first single.

Andy Gibb was a talented English-Austrailian singer/songwriter and teen idol. He was the youngest brother of The Bee Gees: Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb.

You might be too young to know just how massive The Bee Gees were. Few music groups achieved the level of chart and commercial success as the Gibb brothers. Well, maybe The Beatles.  At one point in 1977, five songs in the Billboard Top Ten were written by the Gibbs. As a songwriter, Barry Gibb scored four consecutive number one hits in a row, a record for the time.

They grew so huge, they spread a little of their magic over to little brother Andy. Andy and Barry recorded Andy Gibb’s debut album, Flowing Rivers, at Criteria Studios in Miami. The Eagles were next door, recording Hotel California, and their guitarist Joe Walsh popped in to play guitar on I Just Want to Be Your Everything.

With Barry’s backup vocals, it sounds a lot like a Bee Gees track. Billboard ranks it number 26 in its 100 All-Time Biggest Hits list.

In the late 1970s, the youngest Gibb brother had six singles that reached the Top 10 in the USA, but Gibb’s success was brief.

Gibb did more than record records, he appeared in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat on Broadway and Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates Of Penzance in Los Angeles, California. He also co-hosted the television music show Solid Gold from 1980 to 1982. But, Gibb was ultimately fired from both Dreamcoat and Solid Gold for missing performances because of his cocaine binges.

Gibb battled addiction and depression during his short life. He left this world on March 10, 1988, just five days after his 30th birthday. His poor heart just stopped after his years of cocaine abuse. Robin Gibb said at the time:

“He was also not eating properly and the lack of nutrition also damaged his heart, cocaine abuse shattered his confidence and he became scared of people.”

Gibb is now at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in the Hollywood Hills. His headstone reads:

 Andy Gibb / March 5, 1958 – March 10, 1988 / “An Everlasting Love”

#BornThisDay: Actor, Billie Burke

In The Wizard Of Oz, 1939, photograph from MGM

August 7, 1884– Mary William Ethelbert Appleton Burke used the stage-name Billie Burke when she was a Broadway star back when the 20th century was new. Appearing in Broadway musicals, she stole the hearts of audiences, and also famed tenor Enrico CarusoMark Twain, and, most notably, Broadway producer Florenz Ziegfeld, who became her husband.

Burke’s addlepated, scatterbrained, twittery, jittery, skittish personality was smartly used in comedies on stage and screen in a style that was a knowing combination of naiveté and wit. Burke:

“I never was the greatest actress. I generally did light, gay things. I appeared in cute plays but never a fine one.”

In 1922, the year she won first place in the Motion Picture Popularity Contest, she was described in the press:

“Her eyes are a lovely blue, her eyebrows fair and skin soft, smooth and well nourished, a cameo-like delicacy of feature and a youthful figure.”

Burke was born in the USA to a show business family. She toured Europe with her father who was a clown for the Barnum & Bailey Circus. Her family settled in London where she began acting on stage, adopting her distinctive English accent.

On her return, Burke found tremendous success in the USA. As a star, when she toured with a play, her press agent traveled ahead and leased a house or apartment in every city along the way. Her theatre dressing rooms always had to be completely refurbished, no matter how short the engagement. She ordered that the walls be painted baby blue, “the true ingénue color”.

She was so famous that pajamas, cigars, perfumes and soaps were named for her. In the early 1900’s, women’s fashions were usually heavy and dark, but “Billie Burke” dresses had lots of ruffles and ribbons, and “Billie Burke” wigs, full of bouncing curls, became all the rage. Her maid brushed her hair every morning and again at night; Ziegfeld would pour Champagne over her hair after every shampoo, a method considered appropriate for a redhead. She exercised with a bar bell and walked five miles every day. Burke spoke French and Italian, played piano, and she was skilled at fencing and ballet.

Caruso threw a bouquet of American Beauty Roses on to the stage every night during the run of Love Watches in 1908. Burke recalled:

“Caruso made love and ate spaghetti with equal skill and with no inhibitions.  He would propose marriage several times each evening.”

Gay writer W. Somerset Maugham escorted Burke to a 1913 New Year’s Eve party at the Astor Hotel, arriving after midnight. She descended the staircase to the ballroom and at the foot of the stairs stood Ziegfeld. Burke:

“He had a Mephistopheliar look, his eyebrows and his eye lids lifting, curved upward, in the middle.  Slim and tall and immaculate in full evening dress, he was in black and white contrast to the rest of the costumed party, and so – and for who knows what other reasons, I noticed him at once.”

He noticed her too.

When they began their affair, her manager threatened to drop her because Ziegfeld was married to his big discovery, soprano Anna Held. But, Burke never had any intention of ending the affair. After Held divorced Ziggy in 1914, the couple eloped to Hoboken. Burke:

“The minister was as confused as we were.  ‘And now, Flo,’ he would say to me, ‘you stand here.’ ‘He’s Flo, I’m Billie’, I would say. ‘Oh, all right, then, you stand here, Bill,’ he would say to Flo.  And Flo would correct him. ‘I’m Flo, she’s Bill – I mean Billie’. But he married us and I am quite sure it was legal.”

Burke’s manager had her under contract and as punishment for having married against his wishes; he refused to let her embark on the film career she desired so desperately.

The Ziegfelds lived on a 22-acre estate near Hastings-on-Hudson, with a 20 room main house, plus cottages, stables, a swimming pool and tennis court. The couple maintained a menagerie including a herd of deer, two bears, two lions, partridge, pheasants, cockatoos, parrots, an elephant, two buffaloes, geese, lambs, ducks, chickens and dogs.

Film pioneer Thomas H. Ince offered her $300,000 (the equivalent of $2 million today) for her first film and Burke happily left the stage for the screen. Ziegfeld bought that manager’s contract and became his wife’s new manager. She made her screen debut in Peggy (1915) playing the part of a girl from Scotland who dressed as a boy. She made 12 more silent films in her first year.

In 1917, Burke returned to the Broadway stage under her husband’s management. Between 1917 and 1944, Burke starred in 12 plays on Broadway, including three by her pal Maugham, and one by Noël Coward.

By 1930, she was already being cast in character roles. Burke:

“Oh, that sad and bewildering moment when you are no longer the cherished darling but must turn the corner and try to be funny!”

The 1929 Wall Street Crash ruined Ziegfeld, and Burke had to try harder than ever to be funny. The Ziegfeld’s mortgaged the mansion and Burke needed to keep working. In 1931, she went to Hollywood while Ziegfeld stayed in NYC.

In 1932, Burke was cast in A Bill Of Divorcement, directed by George Cukor. She played Katharine Hepburn‘s mother in the film, which was Hepburn’s debut. Ziegfeld died during the film’s production, but she resumed filming hours after his funeral.

Cukor used her again in Dinner At Eight (1933), with Lionel and John BarrymoreMarie DresslerJean Harlow and Wallace Beery. Burke began to be typecast as a flutter-brained upper-class matron with a high-pitched voice.

In 1936, MGM filmed The Great Ziegfeld, a highly fictionalized version of the life of Florenz Ziegfeld. It won Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Actress for Luise Rainer as Anna Held. William Powell played Ziegfeld and Myrna Loy played Burke, which infuriated Burke because she was under contract to MGM and could have played herself, but the studio considered her too old for the role despite her obviously having the look and mannerisms down perfectly.

She played the daffy Clara Topper in Topper (1937), about a man haunted by two socialite ghosts played by Cary Grant and Constance Bennett. She repeated her role in two Topper sequels. Her comic performance in Merrily We Live (1938) brought Burke her single Academy Award nomination.

Despite a long, varied career, Burke is best remembered today as Glinda The Good Witch Of The North, in a little flick we call The Wizard Of Oz (1939), making her an ultimate Gay icon. She had already worked with Judy Garland in Everybody Sing (1938), playing Garland’s histrionic, hysterical mother. Her other hits include Father Of The Bride (1950) and Father’s Little Dividend (1951), both directed by Vincente Minnelli and starring Spencer TracyJoan Bennett, and Elizabeth Taylor.

Burke continued to work in the 1950s, often in radio and the new medium of television. She was one the first female talk show hosts with At Home With Billie Burke (1952-54). Burke’s last film was in the Western Sergeant Rutledge (1960), directed by John Ford.

In the biopic, The Great Ziegfeld (1936), Myrna Loy portrays Burke. It is an uncharacteristically restrained and polite performance from Loy, perhaps with a regard for the fact that they were both artists working at the same studio at the same time. It had to be awkward.

Her final credits rolled in 1970, taken by ennui, at her home in Beverly Hills. She was 85-years-old. Like any solid gay man of my age, I do an outstanding imitation of Billie Burke.

Is This Trump’s Secret White House Girlfriend?

Hicks was a teen model for Ralph Lauren and was also on the cover of this adult novel

There’s buzz that Hope Hicks, the 28 year-old, White House Director of Strategic Communications (with zero political experience) is Trump’s girlfriend.

Hicks was a former model who worked in public relations until 2012, when she started helping one of her clients, Ivanka Trump, expand her fashion line. (She also modeled for Ivanka’s website — which is supposedly how Trump “discovered” her.) She joined the Trump organization full-time in 2014.

Hicks said about her boss in May,

President Trump has a magnetic personality and exudes positive energy, which is infectious to those around him. He has an unparalleled ability to communicate with people, whether he is speaking to a room of three or an arena of 30,000. He has built great relationships throughout his life and treats everyone with respect. He is brilliant with a great sense of humor … and an amazing ability to make people feel special and aspire to be more than even they thought possible.

You can hear her talk more about Trump in a Forbes’ video, below.

According to Liberal Mountain;

• Trump has cute nicknames for her such as “Hopester” and “Hopie.”

• She talks very highly of him, almost like she’s in love.

• Even though she has no political experience, Trump created a position specifically for her, and she also receives the highest salary in the White House.

• She’s always with him… their offices are very close to each other.

• Trump paid for her apartment during the campaign.

• She’s known as the “Trump Whisperer” because she understands his moods and can figure out what needs to be done. Trump seems to appreciate having her around.

Trump said of Hicks in an interview with the New York Times,

I’m lucky to have her. She’s got very good judgment. She will often give advice, and she’ll do it in a very low-key manner, so it doesn’t necessarily come in the form of advice. But it’s delivered very nicely.

There no real, tangible proof that the two are having an affair, of course, but as soon as she was named the director of strategic communications, everybody started to wonder. Outloud. Online.

Two weeks ago, Claude Taylor, who worked in the White House when Bill Clinton was president, tweeted that he heard Trump was having an affair.

Who knows? It’s either an unfounded rumor or an open secret in the White House. You know who DOES know one way or the other? The Secret Service.
