This short 8mm color film footage was shot by an audience member of I Love Lucy, on the evening of October 12, 1951, at Sound Stage #2 of Desilu Studios, Hollywood, California. The episode that night was only the 6th show of the first season, The Audition.

Many people tried to capture the on-set filming, but producer and writer Jess Oppenheimer, forbid it, because of the possibilities of leaking before air. This footage is thought to be the only surviving material of “Behind-the-Scenes” of this legendary sitcom. Desi Arnaz filmed some filming scenes using his own 8mm movie camera, but they’ve never been seen.

Vivian Vance (Ethyl) does not appearing here, but Lucy, Desi, William Frawley (Fred Mertz) do. Jess Oppenheimer and their famous cameraman, Karl Freund, are seen briefly.

It’s been edited together with the black and white scenes of the episode that were broadcast.

Watch.

#YaBurnt!: Trump Should NEVER Come For a Clinton on Twitter –Especially Not Chelsea

Trump never learns. He went after Hillary hard and was made to look the fool at the debates and the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. it seems. Chelsea Clinton schooled him in a recent Twitter tirade. The former first daughter was NOT having it. Best of all, she showed respect for the presidency, but made it clear that Trump is out of his league as POTUS.

Responding to criticism that Ivanka Trump replaced her father at the summit with G-20 leaders (seated between Chinese President Xi Jinping and British Prime Minister Theresa May), Trump did what he always does. He attacked the Clintons and news media and seemed to admit selling out America in the process.

Trump seems to forget that Chelsea’s father WAS President and did NOT ask her to sit in for him, EVER. And WTF? Ivanka was “holding a seat” while her father gave away the country to Putin?

No, that burn isn’t covered under Trumpcare either, Donald. Sorry.

New Hampshire Is Losing Its Mind Over Local Queer-Themed Billboard

Teatotaller café and coffee shop in Somersworth, New Hampshire, which bills itself as “an oasis of queer, hipster tea, coffee, and pastry goodness” had locals up in arms after it erected a super-fab billboard for Pride last month.

The ad features a boy in hot shorts and pink eyeshadow, biting into a sandwich, with the tag line “I like my men like I like my coffee.”

Within hours, the shop’s Facebook page was filled with comments, most of them nasty.

Via HuffPo:

“Instead of choosing to appeal to a broad demographic for their first large-scale advertisement, they choose a controversial approach and lock out a substantial percentage of what would have been potential customers who, for whatever reason, have a problem with what’s being presented in this ad,” one person wrote. Added another, “Having to try to explain why a man wants to look like a woman is a little much to have to explain to my child at this age.”

Others, however, praised the ad for its satirical humor. “I personally didn’t even think about sexual orientation. I think it’s cute and funny. I’d love to see my [boyfriend] like this with my breakfast,” one person wrote.

The billboard also caught the eye of Somersworth Mayor Dana Hilliard, who acknowledged that while it may “push the limits” of some locals’ “comfort level,” it’s nonetheless a prime example of a free market society. “Living within a democratic society which values First Amendment guaranteed rights, discussion and discourse means that we will be exposed to opinions and sometimes ads which are counter to the way we think,” Hilliard told The Foster’s Daily Democrat.

Teatotaller’s co-owners Emmett Soldati and Palana Belken defended the billboard to HuffPo, saying they aimed to be “provocative, but only in a way that we, a local business and local personality, were already doing.”

“From our modest beginnings in 2011, Teatotaller has sought to inspire, excite, and engage a community of citizens looking for vibrancy and decadence. We are a venue for everyone looking for cosmopolitan flair in a sleepy town,” Soldati and Belken, who said they received positive feedback from customers, wrote. “Over the course of our history, this has included embracing the weird, the eccentric, and the queer. Going against the tide of establishments one might expect in a small working-class downtown, Teatotaller has always ‘stuck its neck out’ and stood up for the values and aesthetics it admires.”

About:

“For the last year, I have been doing drag, but dancing, kicking, and backflipping have been a part of my life since the age of 12. I began to do drag because after dancing for 8 long years, and not always being the spotlight, I simply wanted to be the Beyoncé of my generation. I honestly didn’t care in the beginning how busted I looked because all I cared about was my dancing skills and throwing a good show…but with time, I did come to realize that it’s not all about dancing. Thanks to the help of Melissa Befierce and April Showers, who saw drive, passion, and potential in me, I have improved so much in so little time. They took me under their wings and showed me how to spread mine. Now, I strongly care about my aesthetic. I love to dress expensive, luxurious, and glamorous with a touch of hotness. I just love to look like a beautiful, expensive blonde, porcelain doll.

Finally, I’ve always been obsessed with transformations, which is why my favorite process of drag is getting ready. I love to turn on my favorite telenovela, Betty la Fea,  as well as eat strawberries while I paint my face. Every look takes time. After all, some say it took Da Vinci four years to paint the Mona Lisa. For the future of Kiitana, I see great things coming and I can’t wait to show the world the star that I am.”

Nico Tortorella Talks Sexual Fluidity and 11 Year Relationship with Bethany Meyers

Wowlebrity and pansexual Menendez: Blood Bothers star Nico Tortorella talks to The Advocate about his sexual attraction to both men and women:

“I think the way I use the word fluidity is like fluid in everything, fluid in train of thought,” Nico explains. “It doesn’t always have to be one thing. The one thing anybody can talk about, no matter race, religion, sexuality or gender, is love.”

“I can be emotionally, physically attracted to men. I can be emotionally, physically attracted to women.”

Nico then brings up his 11 year polyamorous relationship with Bethany Meyers, a fitness and lifestyle entrepreneur, who identifies as gay.

“We’re family,” he says, though they shrink away from “boyfriend” or “girlfriend” labels.

Bethany adds, “I think we’re raised with this idea that you’re supposed to go and find ‘the one,’ especially women. You’re looking for your Prince Charming. You need to be proposed to. There’s this one person you’re searching to find, so the idea of finding a stability partner, and having other things on top of that, feels too messy.”

As for sex, Nico basically says that’s no one’s business but their own.

“We need to get our head out of that place,” he says. “I really think that that’s the biggest harm that we have done. Even the word ‘sexuality.’ What’s your ‘sexuality?’ It shouldn’t even be about sex. Sex is a by-product.”

They were all bald as billiard balls and looking absolutely GORGEOUS. It turns out it wasn’t an homage to moi, though, it was a music video being filmed for their latest song “A Lacefront Like This.”

The former Drag Race contestants go through a list of all the various things that someone would do to get their hands on a gorgeous lacefront like selling a kidney, stealing Pandora Boxx’s camera or even coming out of the closet.

LGBTQMustWatch: TNT’s “Claws” (It’s Crazy and Crazy Good!)

For a summer lark, when it is a hot late night, pour a tumbler of Pinot Grigio on the rocks and binge watch some of TNT’s audacious summer series Claws. It is a dark, smartly funny examination of female bad-ass-ness set in a nail salon in a South Florida strip mall that also includes a trailer with a sign that reads “We Sell Big Shrimps”, and the “Messianic Jewish Cafeteria And Internet Center” which hosts weekday square dancing events.

Like Netflix’s Orange Is The New Black, Claws is notable for how it brings fully drawn women characters of different sizes, shapes and ethnicities and provides a thoughtful, yet thoroughly entertaining meditation on the disenfranchised underclass of the USA.

Claws follows the rise of five diverse and treacherous manicurists working at the “Nail Artisan Of Manatee County Salon”, where there is a lot more going on than manicures. The salon owner Desna is played by the great Niecy Nash (Reno 911, Scream Queens, HBO’s Getting On), who lives with and cares for her autistic brother, Dean, played by Harold Perrineau. Desna’s staff includes her BFF Jenn (Jenn Lyon), a trying to stay sober ex-party girl raising two children of different races from two ex-boyfriends; and Quiet Ann (Judy Reyes), a butch lesbian with messy cornrows and a guy’s swagger, providing security for the salon with a baseball bat. Quiet Ann’s specialty is getting “straight” women to hook up with her.

Judy Reyes as Quiet Ann

Add in Polly, played by the always terrific Carrie Preston (True Blood, The Good Wife), a perky preppy who recently served time in prison for identity theft and who has an ankle bracelet monitoring her movements and likes to invent stories about why she ended up doing time; and Virginia (Karrueche Tran), who makes no effort to hide her boredom and impatience with her new job, but is desperate to fit in despite the racial insults about her ambiguously Asian features.

Creating additional chaos to the Nail Artisan Of Manatee County gang is Roller (Jack Kesy), a hot, but thuggish redneck who runs a barely legal pain clinic and uses Desna’s nail salon to launder his considerable profits; Bryce (Kevin Rankin), Jenn’s husband who is also trying to stay sober and stay legit by working as a life coach; and Dr. Ken (Jason Antoon), a real medical doctor at the decidedly illegitimate clinic. The entire group is under the control of the “She She’s Stripclub” owner Uncle Daddy, perfectly overplayed by Dean Norris (Breaking Bad), who is both very bisexual and very Catholic.

The series focuses on Desna’s frustration at being thwarted by the men in her life who rely on her and leave her out of the financial rewards. She lashes out in anger, with consequences funny and sinister.

Female-centric Claws is co-executive produced by Rashida Jones and Janine Sherman Barrois who also serves as showrunner. Plus, a series of women directors.

The whole thing a bit like Steel Magnolias and Breaking Bad had a baby in The Everglades. I swear, this series could only have been set in Florida. Where else would you see a funereal procession led by flat-bed trucks with strippers on their poles?

#Flashback92: k.d.lang’s “Ingénue” Turns 25!

In 1992, k.d. lang released her second solo album, Ingénue. That amazing voice singing about Constant Craving nudged the album to double platinum and unusual for lang, radio airplay. It also had lang breaking new ground. That voice was about much more, because lang, a small-town Canadian gal, was about to become a Gay Icon, and Ingénue, a cultural and artistic turning point, changing the world by being herself.

Ingénue was lang’s first all-original album. She co-wrote most of the songs with her longtime collaborator and bandleader, Ben Mink, with the songs written in a week and a half. Miss Chatelaine was written in 15 minutes. The sound was something new and different; normal on the surface, very strange underneath and carefully non-gender-specific. Ingénue is head over heels in love with love and sex, lusty but cool.

The gorgeous first track, Save Me was lang’s transition from country singer to pop crooner. A few months after Ingénue was released, lang came out of the closet on the cover of The Advocate. In the interview, lang revealed that Ingénue was inspired by her love affair with a married woman, and that Constant Craving was about all forms of love, not just human sexual desire.

lang:

“When I talk about unfulfilled desire, it’s not just human physical love. It’s the love I feel for animals; it’s the love I feel for trees.”

Photograph by Rocky Schenck, Sire Records

Miss Chatelaine is a sly send-up of gender expectations. Lang fully embraced the character of Miss Chatelaine in the video version, a tongue-in-cheek, ultra-femme tribute to The Lawrence Welk Show, surrounded by bright pastel colors and a profusion of bubbles, complete with an accordion accompaniment.

In support of the album, lang gave an incredible performance of Miss Chatelaine on The Arsenio Hall Show, complete with a full orchestra, a chaise lounge, a bubble machine and a formal gown. In the interview segment afterwards, Hall calls out the audience’s reluctant applause for lang’s support for Gay Rights and Animal Rights.

Chrissie Hynde:

“lang’s a secret weapon; she’s a freedom fighter for the oppressed, and animals are on the bottom rung. If she can get into the mainstream, then she’s getting the message through and having a great, positive influence.”

Lang was also nominated for several Grammy Awards for Ingénue including Best Album, Best Song, and Record Of The Year. She won Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for Constant Craving. Ingénue is included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.

David Bowie wrote:

“lang is fast emerging as the classiest, most stylish performer of the 1990s.”

Last week, Nonesuch Records released Ingénue: 25th Anniversary Edition. The new two-disc set includes remastered versions of the album’s original 10 tracks, and the second disc features eight previously unreleased performances from lang’s 1993 MTV Unplugged episode. Lang, who now resides in my city of Portland, marks the album’s anniversary with the Ingénue Redux Tour, with concerts in Australia this month and in Canada in August.

#BornThisDay: Pianist, Van Cliburn

Photograph from NYC Public Library Performing Arts Archive

July 12, 1934– Van Cliburn:

“I’m not a success, I’m a sensation.”

When I was a kid, I would study the photos on the covers of my parental units’ Van Cliburn albums and I would get that familiar, perplexing tingle of recognition and arousal. I mistakenly thought he had one name: Vancliburn… like Liberace. I even had the two pianists mixed up for while, except that Van Cliburn’s photos really held my full attention, while Liberace’s scared me a bit. My mother explained to me that he was a brilliant classical pianist and also a cowboy. I swooned. I then diligently practiced my piano lessons, looking forward to the day that Van Cliburn and I would play 4-handed piano and then ride the range together.

Harvey Lavan “Van” Cliburn Jr. was born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas. He studied at The Julliard School at 17 years of age. His talent took him to Moscow when he was 23 years old and what happened there propelled him to international superstardom.

In 1968, the first International Tchaikovsky Competition was put together to prove to the world the USSR held cultural superiority over the rest of the world during the Cold War, after the Soviet’s technological victory with the Sputnik launch in October 1957 which had given them a Scientific advantage. Cliburn’s amazing performance at that competition’s finale, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto #1 and Sergei Vasilievich  Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto Number Three, was enough to earn him a standing ovation that lasted for eight minutes. When it was time to announce the winner of the competition, the judges were obliged to ask the permission of the Soviet leader Nikita Sergeyevich Khrushchev to give their first prize to an American. A most unhappy Khrushchev stated: “Is he the best? Then give him the prize!” His electrifying technique, focus, brilliant octave reach, daring examples of rubato, plus a youthful American charm made for an historic performance. Cliburn was handed his gold medal by famed Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovitch.

Cliburn returned home to the USA to a ticker tape parade down Broadway in NYC, a first ever for a classical musician. Time Magazine’s cover dubbed him: “The Texan Who Conquered Russia”. The article gushed: “He may be Vladimir Horowitz, Liberace and Elvis Presley rolled into one.”

He appeared on television shows: Person To PersonWhat’s My Line? and The Tonight Show.  He demonstrated his patriotism by beginning each performance with a little number we call The Star Spangled Banner. He toured extensively, frequently giving concerts for heads of state, playing for every POTUS from Harry S. Truman to Barack H. Obama.

Tall, dashingly handsome, with huge hands, and oozing talent, he became the first classical artist to receive a $10,000 fee for a performance. He played at The 1964 New York World’s Fair to a standing room only house, while the following week, Igor Stravinsky conducted a concert to a half empty theatre.

His recording of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto Number One shared the top spot on the pop charts with Johnny Mathis’s Greatest Hits and the soundtrack of South Pacific. It became the first classical music album to ever sell a million copies.

He became the artistic director for the eponymous Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 1962, providing an enduring legacy, but his performances lost their freshness as his rococo style of playing fell out of fashion. His performances were inconsistent, his tone took on a strident edge, his repertoire remained unchanged, and his interpretations became trivialized by his affectations. He also was a real diva, showing up late for concerts or cancelling at the last minute. Worse, he developed a debilitating case of stage fright, intimidated by the audience’s high expectations. Two decades later, at just 43-years-old, when most pianists are at the apex of their careers, he withdrew from performing and recording. Music critics wrote that he never had realized his full potential.

After that, he mostly stayed at home in Fort Worth with his mother until her death at 97-years-old, playing and composing on the 15 pianos scattered about his mansion. He struggled with composing a piano sonata that he never performed. He became obsessed with collecting antique silver. Then things became quite queer.

In 1996, Cliburn was sued by his boyfriend of 17 years, Thomas Zaremba. Zaremba claimed entitlement to a portion of Cliburn’s income and assets claiming that because of “an oral and/or implied partnership agreement”. Zaremba said that he had assisted in the management of Cliburn’s career and finances and performed domestic duties, including helping Cliburn care for his aged mother and was therefore entitled to half the money and half of the silver. He also charged that he had been exposed to HIV from Cliburn and suffered emotional distress. Each claim was dismissed, with the courts holding that palimony suits are not permitted in Texas unless the relationship is based on a written agreement.

Cliburn called the accusations “salacious” but said nothing else about the case. Gracious and polite, Cliburn was also known to be notoriously tough to interview. The Music Biz had long been aware that Cliburn was gay. He and Zaremba had appeared together at public functions around Fort Worth, but in Cliburn’s four decades as a celebrity, the press conveniently never linked him romantically with anyone.

To the music loving public he was still the All-American Boy. He lived with his mother until she died and he was a lifelong Baptist who regularly attended church services. He did not drink or smoke. He always played The Star Spangled Banner. He always was to me, a more masculine, more talented Liberace… minus the glitz. I never slept with him, in fact, I never met Van Cliburn.

In December 2001, Cliburn received The Kennedy Center Honor, along with Julie AndrewsQuincy JonesJack Nicholson, and Luciano Pavarotti. I would have liked to have been a fly on the wall in that greenroom. The charming Neo-Con War-Monger, Condoleezza Rice, a talented pianist, gave tribute:

“Van Cliburn possesses grace and power, the power of his music to build bridges across the cultural and political divide.”

When the news reports came out that Cliburn had taken that final big curtain call, few mentioned that he was gay, or had a partner, making him one of the most honored but non-recognized Gay Icons of all time. Cliburn was 78-years-old when he left us in May 2013, taken by the plague.

This PR Playboy, Who Produced a Russian Billionaire’s Music Video (Feat. Donald!) Just Might Bring Trump Down

A year ago Rob Goldstone, a British music publicist and former journalist orchestrated a meeting between Donald Trump Jr., Jared Kushner, and Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort. The Daily Beast says that,

“Goldstone emailed Trump Jr., promising

‘information that would incriminate Hillary and her dealings with Russia.’

part of Russia and its government’s support for Mr. Trump—helped along by Aras and Emin,’

Goldstone wrote. Aras and Emin Agalarov are a Russian billionaire and his aspiring popstar son, whose career Goldstone managed.

The Agalarovs have boasted of their relationship with Trump —they hosted his Miss Universe pageant in Moscow in 2013. Emin’s music career—which saw pre-President Trump appear in one of his music videos —also helped bankroll Goldstone’s life in New York’s club scene.

Around 2013, he associated with a crowd of New York men, “largely in their twenties, a lot of expats, all CW-series-regular attractive, and everyone pretty vaguely moneyed,” one former member of the scene, who requested anonymity to avoid reprisals, told The Daily Beast.

The kind of crowd where an apartment party in a loft on Madison Square Park turned into a limo ride turned into illicit substances in the bathrooms at Boom Boom Room, all of it getting paid for… somehow. One of the fixtures in this scene was Rob, who was always the only old guy in the group.’”

Michael Musto told The Daily Beast that Goldstone used to invite him to events at the New York Friars Club, a private venue in Midtown known for hosting celebrity roasts.

I always enjoyed it because I love Borscht Belt humor and am not ashamed to admit it. I also found Rob pretty affable —he’s a friendly, outgoing figure who reminds me a bit of Alfred P. Doolittle in My Fair Lady—and he would always give me entree to his stuff.”

After he invited me to one Friars event in 2013 —a roast for Padma Lakshmi, cookbook writer and ex of Salman Rushdie— I showed up and he informed me that the event didn’t actually want journalists there, only photographers. To make it up to me, he set me and my friend up with dinner that night at the Russian Tea Room (which he also handled). I now find that extremely amusing.”

Asked what he thought when he saw Goldstone making headlines over the last few days, Musto said,

I almost spit out my borscht.

Goldstone’s social media is shows him in collection of colorful hats and humorous videos, including a Facebook post from April in which he wrote beside a photo of him wearing a gold hat with the word “CUNTY” in license-plate font.

“It’s very me!”

Shortly after Trump’s victory in November, Goldstone posted a picture to his now-private Instagram account depicting him in a T-shirt with the word “RUSSIA” written on it.

Goldstone’s Russian money also apparently funded his expenses on the NYC party circuit. Goldstone’s former acquaintance said,

Nobody knew a ton about his background, but a friend from the region explained once that he was a Lou Pearlman-esque manager for the untalented son of a Russian billionaire, a kid who wanted a pop-star career and had his daddy buy it for him.

That kid was Emin Agalarov, whom Goldstone represented under his management label Oui 2 Entertainment. Like Goldstone, Emin presented himself as something of a playboy, appearing in a music video featuring the Miss Universe contestants and Donald Trump himself. (see below)

While the company was promoting Emin’s music career, Goldstone was acting as an intermediary for the wannabe pop star. Goldstone emailed Trump Jr. on June 3, 2016.

Emin just called and asked me to contact you with something very interesting,” Russia’s prosecutor general “met with his father Aras this morning and in their meeting offered to provide the Trump campaign with some official documents and information that would incriminate Hillary and her dealings with Russia and would be very useful to your father.

This is obviously very high level and sensitive information but is part of Russia and its government’s support for Mr. Trump—helped along by Aras and Emin.”

Trump Jr. replied that,

if it’s what you say I love it,

He forward the messages to Kushner and Manafort, who attended the June 9 meeting in Trump Tower. Goldstone wrote of the two people with whom Trump Jr. was scheduled to meet.

I won’t sit in on the meeting, but will bring them in at 3pm and introduce you etc…

Goldstone checked into Trump Tower and the Trump Organization on Facebook in the hours before the discussions, whether he was in that meeting or not.

Stay tuned for the next shit storm on the soap opera that is our country.

Hainan Airlines collaborated with designer Laurence Xu who introduced the new uniforms at the Paris Couture Week. Inspired by traditional Chinese dress, the uniform blends modern Western-style fashion trends and traditional Chinese elements like cloud drawings, waves and the Chinese mythical bird – the Roc.

Xu Fei, brand director of the airline said,

The cooperation between Hainan Airlines and Lawrence Xu is industry leading. We are not only creating a new uniform but also showing the internationalized image of our airline. Especially on international routes, we would like to let passengers know that China is modern and trendy.

The men’s version of the uniform is a bit more Western-looking, with double-breasted overcoats and less overt elements of Chinese culture, but chic, nonetheless. Ours are so dull, Westerners would be hard pressed in 2017 to remember what ANY airline uniform looks like on a domestic flight.

Adam Rippon is a 27 year-old, U.S. figure skating champion and an Olympic hopeful for 2018. Today’s “hump day hottie” is from Scranton, Pennsylvania. He sat down with Team USA to talk about being an openly gay athlete,

Being gay isn’t what defines me, but it’s a big part of who I am and I like to talk about my coming out because that’s when I started to own who I was as a person.

When I came out was when I was able to breathe. When everyone knew, I didn’t feel like I was hiding anything. I didn’t feel like I was putting on a show. I was being me and it was easy. It was a lot easier to be me than to be who I thought I was supposed to be.

A lot of times it’s taboo, especially with boys, like, ‘You skate, you’re gay,’ That’s not always the case, but that being said, you feel a little shame. Being gay and a skater, you don’t want it to be true.”
