Dolce & Gabbana Don’t Want to Look for Bad Things, So Get Off Their Backs Everybody

Italian designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana – who are anti marriage equality, anti LGBTQ adoption, anti “synthetic” babies (?!), and who gleefully dress Melania Trump – gave an interview with The Financial Times aboard their yacht “furnished with marble-lined bathrooms and liveried staff” in advance of their annual summer Alta Mode event– “[a]n orgy of banquets, cocktail evenings, discos, jewelry launches and a men’s and women’s couture show.”

When pressed about some of their more, how you say, problematic stances (including those $2,4000 “slave sandals” and their African-themed costume party), Gahanna demurred:

“People like to complicate fashion,” he adds of the hoo-ha over whom they dress and what they say. “But I feel free. I respect everyone, and I love to express my opinion. Some people love it and some people hate it. But that’s the game. Life is beautiful. I don’t want to look for the bad things.”

How very flahzeeda of them. (via Jezebel; Photo: Pacific Coast News)

#BornThisDay: The Hollywood Sign

July 13, 1923 – The Hollywood Sign

Putting aside my passion for Hollywood history, the industry and the town itself, I have a real connection to the place. My father grew up in the Silverlake neighborhood of Los Angeles. I chose to attend Loyola Marymount University with its gorgeous campus in the Westchester area. Those were happy years, full of adventures. I loved the city. I was always thrilled whenever I happened to catch sight of the Hollywood Sign from anywhere around town, sometimes popping into view at unexpected times. For me, The Hollywood Sign symbolized not just the glamour and excitement of the film industry, but also the hardship and heartbreak of trying to have a career as an actor.

The Hollywood Sign was the project of the Los Angeles Times publisher Harry Chandler who conceived it as an epic $21,000 billboard for his upscale Hollywoodland real estate development in Beachwood Canyon. The sign was intended to play the role of a giant marquee for a city that was constantly announcing its own gala film premiere.

It took 200 workmen to get it erected. That’s a lot of erecting! Seven miles of road had to be cut into the mountainside and 300,000 cubic yards of dirt had to be moved.

The sign is located on the south slope of Mount Lee, the tallest point in LA, part of Griffith Park, north of the Mulholland Highway. The Hollywood Sign measures 450 feet long, its 13 mammoth letters are 45 feet high, and it is visible from all parts of Hollywood and many other neighborhoods in Los Angeles. It is massive. Each letter is constructed of 3’×9′ metal squares rigged together by an intricate frame of scaffolding, pipes, wires and telephone poles. All of the building materials had to be brought up precipitous Mount Lee on simple dirt paths.

A giant white dot, 35 feet in diameter, lit with hundreds of 20-watt lights on the perimeter was constructed below the sign to catch the eye of the citizens and visitors. The sign itself featured 4,000 20-watt bulbs, spaced eight inches apart. In the 1920s, the sign blinked into the Hollywood night: “Holly” first, next “wood” and at last- “land”. Then to make the point, there was a giant period for punctuation. The effect was truly spectacular. The bulbs were changed daily by a caretaker who lived in a tiny house behind one of the sign’s giant “L”s.

Photograph from Hollywood Sign Trust

In 1932, a despondent Hollywood hopeful, Peg Entwistle, jumped to her death from the Sign’s giant letter “H.” Her ghost haunts it to this day.

The last four letters were removed in 1945, after Hollywood was firmly established as the world’s film capital and Hollywoodland had become a neighborhood of charming cottages.

In 1973, the Hollywood Sign was officially named “Los Angeles Cultural-Historical Monument #111”. The ceremony, hosted by film great Gloria Swanson, was blanketed in a thick fog, obscuring the event.

During the 1960s, residents fled Hollywood for the suburban San Fernando Valley and the studios relocated to other parts of town. By 1970, Paramount Pictures was the only studio left in Hollywood proper. The neighborhood fell into disrepair and many of the grand old movie palaces became adult theaters. Crime soared, and the beautiful boulevards were devastated by urban decay. The Hollywood Sign became dilapidated and rusted, like an old star from the silent film era. It was no longer lit at night.

When I lived there in the 1970s, the top of the “D” and the entire third “O” had slid down Mount Lee, and an arsonist’s work had burned the bottom of the second “L.” Someone, and it wasn’t me, had altered the Sign’s letters to read “Hollyweed”.

In 1978, because of a campaign to restore the landmark by Rock musician Alice Cooper (who donated the funding for the missing O), a committee set out to replace the deteriorated sign with a more permanent structure. Nine donors gave $27,700 each to replace the old letters with new ones made of steel, guaranteed to last.

The new version of the sign was unveiled on Hollywood’s 75th anniversary, in 1978, broadcast before a live television audience of 60 million people. Those donors were:

H – Terrence Donnelly: publisher of the Hollywood Independent Newspaper

O – Giovanni Mazza: Italian movie producer

L – Les Kelley: originator of the Kelley Blue Book

L – Gene Autry: singer, actor, business person

Y – Hugh Hefner: founder of Playboy magazine

W – Andy Williams: singer, television host

O – Warner Brothers Studios

O – Alice Cooper, who donated in memory of Groucho Marx

D – Dennis Lidtke: Los Angeles business person

In spring 2010, Hefner donated the final $900,000 needed to save the Hollywood sign from extinction. The land on which the sign sits, once owned by Howard Hughes, who had planned to build a house there for Ginger Rogers, had been announced as the site for a fancy new hotel. To save the sign, the Los Angeles Trust For Public Land, a conservation group, needed to raise $12.5 million.

Donations came from Steven SpielbergTom Hanks, the Getty family, Norman Lear, plus Sony PicturesNBC Universal, and good old Warner Bros. But, they were still $1 million short.  Hefner:

“I am proud we were able to come together and create a public/private partnership to protect this historic symbol that will continue to welcome dreamers, artists and Austrian bodybuilders for generations to come.”

The Hollywood Sign has been a star in many films, playing itself in Hollywood Boulevard (1935), Hollywoodland (2006), The Black Dahlia (2007), Mulholland Drive (2001), South Park: Bigger, Longer, & Uncut (1999). A giant ape scales it in Mighty Joe Young (1998). It gets blown to bits by aliens in Independence Day (1996), set on fire in Escape From LA (1996), and collapses to dust in Earthquake (1974). The sign is featured during the first and final shots of Ed Wood (1994).

My favorite of the Hollywood Sign’s movie roles is in Chaplin (1992). There is a great scene where Charlie Chaplin, perfectly played by Robert Downey, Jr. and Douglas Fairbanks, Sr., played dashingly by Kevin Kline, ride horses up to the sign where Fairbanks pees on the sign while Chaplin gives a rousing speech about the rising tide of Americanism. Fairbanks then proceeds to climb the sign, performing gymnastics on one of the letters as the camera pulls back to reveal the entire “Hollywoodland” sign with the lights of the city below.

#LibraryIsOpen: Streisand Reads Trump to FILTH! –Says He’s a “Fake President” With “Serious Mental Problems”

#happy4th #independenceday 🇺🇸

A post shared by Barbra Streisand (@barbrastreisand) on

In the recent past Barbra Streisand has said that Donald Trump

“looks like a raccoon in a tanning bed.”

But she just wrote a piece for the Huffington Post that will eviscerate that fragile ego. It’ll singe Trump’s wispy wiglet, if someone ever reads it to him. Babs, the library is open, and the floor is yours mama. Go!

There’s a narcissistic fraud in the White House. An angry, hollow, vindictive man is running the country. What bottomless emotional need does he have for acclaim? It is hard to know where his rampant narcissism ends and serious mental problems ensue. He lies prodigiously and for no reason except he obviously has an unclear vision of what the truth is.

Is his narcissism the driving force behind his lies? Look no further than the lobbies at seven of his golf courses, where he has hung fake Time Magazine covers with made-up headlines of effusive praise for himself. What a bizarre intersection between vanity and fraud. That is a president whose cabinet officials obsequiously offer tribute to his greatness while cameras roll. What is next, Dear Leader… a new haircut?

Trump has lied so much there was a New York Times article listing just the lies he’s told since taking the oath of office. This is to say nothing of the lies told repeatedly on the campaign trail and the ones he used to sell investors before bankrupting six business deals. He tells us he is very rich, but disregards the Constitution to enrich himself and his family. The chief government ethics officer just quit over it.

Candidate Trump promised: “No cuts… to Medicaid,” “No one will lose coverage,” and that “Nobody will be worse off financially.” Of course we now know his endorsed Senate TrumpCare plan offers tax cuts to the wealthiest individuals at the cost of stripping 23 million people of their health care and making the biggest cuts to Medicaid in history. Another broken promise. He has specifically gone after women’s health care with a vengeance. Can his supporters support that? Do they even know about it? Maybe not if they get their fake news from Fox.

Residents of the world have taken note. According to a recent Pew Research Poll, international faith in the president of the United States to respond well to global crises is 22 percent. This is down from 64 percent when President Obama was in office.

Keith Olbermann has taken to calling our Commander in Chief, #FakePresident. One could almost hear his unrequited search for legitimacy when he said, “I’m president and you’re not” to the media. You can hear the singsong of a child saying, “lalalalala!” There was also his stunt for WWE when he faked a body slam, which of course was later repurposed into a tweet he shared with a CNN logo over his opponent’s face. While he fit quite nicely into this WWE world of fake entertainment, what case of arrested development is it to retweet this? Is he 12?

This is the Trump presidency. He will not grow in the office. Does his vindictiveness stem from Obama teasing him at the White House Correspondents Dinner over the “birther” insanity? As Charles Blow so perfectly put it, “Trump wants to be Obama — held in high esteem. But, alas, Trump is Trump.” His approval rating is underwater. A full 20 percent of his first five months in office has been spent golfing instead of learning about policy. He watches cable TV and then tweets in a rage. He lacks the temperament to fulfill his role. For all his ranting about fake news and fake media…

the truth is, he is the fake president.

Ouch. You can read the whole entire piece here.

#Glorious: Macklemore’s Sweet Video with His Grandma on Her 100th Birthday Will Give You All the FEELS. Watch

When Macklemore needed a video for his new song, he took his grandmother out for her 100th birthday and filmed their whole day together.

The video, for Macklemore’s song Glorious, is melting cold hearts all over because of the rapper’s sweet relationship with his Grandma Helen. (It’s racked up over 12 million views already!) He surprises her at her house and tells her that they’re going to spend the day doing whatever she wants.

They hop into Macklemore’s vintage convertible and get granny some new kicks, head to the bar for some karaoke and then the arcade for some claw grabbing. Helen watches as her grandson get a new tattoo, they joy-ride in a grocery store, of course, they hit up the thrift shop and then back to Grandma’s house, where her friends are waiting to surprise her with a party, a cake and a stripper!

On YouTube, the first comment underneath the video is from Macklemore himself,

Grandma – nothing is more Glorious than you. Happy 100th. Thank you for the Werthers Originals. The advice. And for being a part of something that I’ll treasure forever. Love Ben.

Watch. (And just try not to tear up…)

Why Is Celiné Dion Looking SO FIERCE Lately? Two Words: Law Roach

$
0
0

Roach posted on Instagram: “I remember telling the then 14 year old Zendaya that I would work my ass off until the world saw what I saw and one day you would be on the cover of Vogue. Well….. HERE it is…”

The name is on the lips of two single name fashion icons you know, Celiné & Zendaya;

Law Roach

During last year’s couture week, Celiné Dion was just weeks into her partnership with “image architech”, Mr. Roach, and six months past the deaths of both her husband, René Angélil, and brother, Daniel Dion, who died of cancer within two days of each other. Roach said in a recent phone call with Vanity Fair,

Céline has no fear. And when you have that type of energy, you have this attitude that we can do whatever we want and we don’t care who likes it or dislikes it. Fashion is supposed to be polarizing. It has to be overwhelming.

Dion discovered Roach through her kids. They watched the Disney Channel sitcom, K.C. Undercover, starring 20-year-old Zendaya Coleman. After seeing Zendaya pop up on red carpets Dion Googled to find out who was dressing the star. Then she made a call to Roach.

My first words were: Céline who? I don’t think I had dreamt that big of a dream. That this legend, this woman who we’ve all grown up to her music, that’s been around for 30 years, was calling me to work with me.

He met with Dion at the Billboard Awards in May of last year. The next day she invited him to move to Paris for a month to work as her stylist for her everyday looks as well as her tour wardrobe and he’s with her ever since as evidenced by his Instagram.

She also credits me, and what we did, and the clothes, and the shoes, and the bags, and the jewelry, and couture week, and the shows, and all that to helping her through her grieving process. I’m sure her grieving process will never be over. She’ll probably grieve her husband for the rest of her life because she was with him for so long. But she has said that what we did last year in Paris really helped her through that process. For me that’s more than anything else. That’s more than accolades, that’s more than being interviewed by Vanity Fair, that is something that I’ll take with me forever.

Her emergence as a fashion icon came during this year’s Billboard Music Awards, where she celebrated the 20th anniversary of My Heart Will Go On. It wasn’t just her performance that commanded the spotlight. The dress was a couture piece by Stephane Rolland that wowed the audience and the internet in the aftermath. (The Wow Report’s James St. James had a fit over it!)

Even Roach admits that on paper that that dress

doesn’t even make sense.

Over the past few months, Dion has announced an accessories line, attended the Met Gala for the first time, and kicked off her 2017 tour. She’s seen all around Paris, sitting front row at Dior and Giambattista Valli, and waving to hoards of fans while perched atop of moving cars.

As Roach says, and, as you can see in these shots below, he’s

always somewhere in the background making [sure] everything is A-OK.

George Michael to Posthumously Receive the Elizabeth Taylor Humanitarian Award

The late pop star/LGBTQ icon George Michael will receive the Elizabeth Taylor Humanitarian Award by Project Angel Food for being a loyal supporter of multiple charities throughout his life. He will be honored at the 27th Annual Project Angel Food Gala Awards in Los Angeles, where Adam Lambert will perform a medley of his hits.

Via PAPER:

In a statement, Project Angel Food revealed that Michael helped the charity during its most trying time — the height of the AIDS epidemic in 1993, when many victims were in dire need of help. “Struggling to make payroll while sacrificing internally for the good of the community, Project Angel Food received an unsolicited donation, placed on the organization’s doorstep. Contained in an envelope was a check and note from George Michael, for the amount of $25,000,” the charity said. Michael would continue to contribute the same amount every year until his untimely death on Christmas 2016.

James Woods Viciously Attacked a Gender Non-Conforming Child on Twitter – Now the Parents Are Speaking Out

The parents of 10-year old C.J. Duran spoke to HuffPo after douchey right wing actor James Woods tweeted the gender-noncorming chid would “grow up to murder and dismember his parents and stuff them in a freezer.”

How has this affected you?
Matt Duron: I can’t answer that honestly here. It’s hard being the bigger man when someone attacks your family and does it in the way Woods did it. I’ll leave it at that.
Lori Duron: I was totally and completely shocked at first. It was late at night and I was scrolling through Facebook because I couldn’t sleep. I saw the tweet because someone had posted it on Facebook and one of our friends left a comment defending us. At first, I couldn’t quite make sense of his words in conjunction with the picture of us at Pride. Like, my brain couldn’t register that James Woods ― a somewhat public figure ― was saying that my sweet, happy, harmless 10-year-old son will eventually kill us, dismember us and stuff us in the freezer.

Woods also implied that we force our son to be gender creative. Anybody who has followed our journey knows that is not true. I’ve written about how much easier our lives would be if both of our boys were straight and cisgender. We had to evolve to the place where we are now, that’s what my writing is all about ― to show our evolution as parents and people and hope that it inspires others. I’m also always disturbed and surprised when adults ― who are old enough to know better ― think it’s okay to talk about a child in a negative way. Especially when they do it so graphically. The biggest rule we have in our house and the life lesson we stress most to our two children is “Don’t be a jerk.” When adults are jerks it makes me wonder about the way they were parented, not how I parent. That’s a reflection of them, their background and their intentions, not mine. So, yes, I say I’m immune to hate thrown my way, but I must admit, Woods’ tweet proved me wrong. I’ve had to remind myself of another thing we teach our kids: You can’t let hate breed hate and fear breed fear. Some of my initial reactions to the tweet included hate and fear, I had to exercise some self-control because lashing out wouldn’t help the situation.

What kind of support have you received?
MD: We have received a lot of support from our friends and family. Anybody who knows us knows that we have an awesome support system. It goes to show that you don’t cultivate relationships with quality people for the good times. You do it for the hard times. That’s when true friends step up, support and encourage you. They remind you that you’re doing the right things for your children. I expected my friends and family to be there for us, I wasn’t expecting the outpouring of encouragement and love from the public and celebrities.
LD: This incident has shown us that the village we are lucky enough to be a part of will assemble at a moment’s notice to support and protect us. We’ve had close friends and mere acquaintances reach out to us and defend us. They offered to help us in any way they can and have made good on their offers. The LGBTQ community was also swift to be by our side. We’ve been in constant communication with the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) since the tweet. I’ve seen firsthand how quickly and powerfully HRC can mobilize to provide support, a listening ear and sound advice. It’s amazing. PFLAG has also been checking on us throughout the day and offering help. Members of the LGBTQ community who are strangers to us have offered support and encouragement.

And all of the people and organizations that have contacted us have always been – first and foremost ― concerned for our safety and wellbeing. And, then, there are the celebrities who came to our defense. When Neil Patrick Harris replied to Woods’ tweet, I was speechless. As a parent, when someone comes to your child’s defense, the positive emotion is overwhelming. With Neil being who he is and having the audience he does, that positive emotion was multiplied. We are so thankful for his tweet and support. When other celebrities started retweeting Neil’s tweet, it felt like this big, powerful, loving, supportive army had assembled in front of us and we could take a moment to catch our breath.

Have these attacks made you reconsider your mission in any way?
LD: Woods’ tweet definitely highlights the fact that there is work left for me to do. There is still education that has to take place and empathy to inspire. It also shows the kind of people and thinking we need to protect my son (and kids like him) from. People who think like Woods are the danger to my son; not me.
MD: My wife and I have been advocates for children like our son for several years now. I have educated myself on these issues. The statistics for LGBTQ youth are troubling: self-harm, addiction, depression, unsafe sexual behaviors, etc. I will not allow those statistics to be my son’s statistics. I’ve heard heart-breaking stories from adults where were like my son when they were growing up. Stories about how their first bullies were their parents or siblings and how they were beaten up emotionally and/or physically. How their family kicked them out and shut them out when they came out. I’m a dedicated dad who isn’t afraid and will always speak up. James Woods isn’t going to change that or the way I father.

Oregon Just Decriminalized Possession of Coke, Heroin, Meth, and Other Drugs

First-time offenders caught with small amounts of heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine and other illegal drugs will face less jail time and smaller fines under a new bill approved by the Oregon legislature that aims to curb mass incarceration.

Via The Washington Post:

The Oregon legislature passed a bill late last week that reclassifies possession of several drugs from a felony to a misdemeanor, reducing the punishments and expanding access to drug treatment for people without prior felonies or convictions for drug possession. Oregon lawmakers hope to encourage drug users to seek help rather than filling up the state’s prisons as an epidemic of abuse spreads.

“We are tying to move policy towards treatment rather than prison beds,” said state Sen. Jackie Winters (R), co-chair of the Public Safety Committee and a supporter of the bill. “We can’t continue on the path of building more prisons when often the underlying root cause of the crime is substance use.”

And while many Oregon counties already allow some low-level drug offenders to undergo treatment instead of jail time, these programs are generally in wealthier counties with more resources, leaving people in low-income communities without options.

“So if you crossed the county line with a small amount of heroin, in one county you could be looking at a felony. In another county you could be looking at a misdemeanor with pretty good access to treatment,” Knott said. “We had a feeling this was unjust because the outcome is largely due to the county’s resources.”

The bill also deals with the issue of racial profiling by police.

The bill requires police officers to record demographic information — including the age, race and gender — of any person stopped during routine pedestrian and traffic stops. The Oregon Criminal Justice Commission will analyze the demographic data police departments collect and will notify them of any disparities so that the departments can make adjustments to their practices.

In 2015, Oregon became the 31st state to pass a law addressing racial profiling, but it did not provide guidance for dealing with the issue. “The bill was incomplete,” Knott said. “It was saying to police departments, ‘Just don’t profile,’ and ‘Here is a definition of what not to do, and we expect you not to do it.’ ”

All of which sound incredibly progressive. So much so, that I can never see Jeff Sessions (or any Trump stooge for that matter), allowing this nationally.

#WTF: Albany, Oregon, City Council Rejects Equity Language (You Know, “Those People”)

Albany, Oregon is small city of about 52,000, 75 miles from Portland in the southern end of the Willamette Valley. Portland and Multnomah County are a little pocket of Liberalism surrounded by the rest of a state that leans Libertarian with serious Republican overtones. Albany is county seat of Linn County, and the 11th largest city in Oregon, predominantly an agricultural and manufacturing center that was founded in 1848.

Things can get a little interesting in Oregon when you leave Portland. Yesterday, after a contentious meeting, the Albany City Council voted against changing the Albany Human Relations Commission municipal code to include the words “Diversity” and “Equity”, while removing the word “Harmonious”.

The Albany Democrat-Herald newspaper reported the council meeting room was filled beyond capacity on July 12. Most people who spoke favored including the new language, citing Oregon’s history of Racial Inequity and personal stories about a lack of diversity in Albany.

Councilman Rich Kellum opposed the changes at a previous meeting, when he said diversity and equity were buzzwords used by Black Lives Matter and other groups. During that meeting, Kellum described people who support equity and diversity as “those people”.

Photograph: albanycity.net

Before the city council voted yesterday, Kellum addressed the crowd. He announced that he had friends in high school that were Mexican and Indian and that he had a friend in the Navy who was a Mexican.

Kellum said he judges people on their character, not their color. He said he once fired a woman not because she was a minority but because she lied to him. Kellum:

“And that’s when I learned all I needed to learn about lipstick lesbians…”

According to the local newspaper, the crowd jeered at that comment.

Kellum was among the majority in the 4-2 vote against adding the Equity language.

8-Year-Old Drag Queen Lactatia Meets the Cast of “Kinky Boots”

Eight-year-old drag legend-in-the-making Lactatia (aka Nemis Quinn Mélançon Golden) made headlines when he appeared onstage with Bianca Del Rio during the Montreal stop of the Werq the World tour. Now, in the video below, he travels to NYC with his mother (and #1 fan) Jessica Mélançon to take in the Broadway show Kinky Boots and meet the cast backstage.

Via The Advocate:

Nemis was always pretty fancy. He had fancy shoes and he had his fancy purses, and as he got older he used to try on his older sister’s princess clothes — tutus and stuff, and he just kind of did that. Then she started watching Rupaul’s Drag Race two years ago, and he was like, okay, I can be a professional drag queen. And we were like, sure, sure you can!”

For a year now, Jessica has been making that dream a reality, learning the tricks of the drag trade, putting Lactatia in makeup, costume and nails. Jessica books performances for Lactatia to lip sync, after which 100 percent of the star’s earnings go to LGBT youth. “It’s like being a pop star without actually having to put in the work of being an actual pop star.” Jessica said, speculating why her son is so devoted to the craft. Lactatia definitely is a big fan of pop — her top divas are Lady Gaga, Sia, and Beyonce. He was particularly excited to see Kinky Boots and sees the cast as role models.

Although Jessica doesn’t know how Nemis will identify in the future, she accepts him fully, and Lactatia too. “When he was little he said, When I grow up I can be a girl with a penis if I want to. And I was like, sure, sure you can buddy.” She said. Not everyone has been so accepting. “We’ve had the most backlash from Christian groups. But we refuse to read any negative comments.” She feels that Lactatia is talented, and dedicated to the craft, and that’s enough.

Fresh of her stellar performance at the New York City Pride March last month, trans singer/songwriter Dina Delicious has just released her new single Reverse The Beat. The usually super sweet and upbeat nightlife icon penned the song at a low point in her life when she was struggling with emotional demons.”I was in a dark place trying to figure out the purpose of my existence and if the world would be a better place if I just gave up and gave in,” says Dina. As an activist, fighting for transgender rights to proper healthcare, housing, education, and an end to discrimination, this song is just one of the ways she’s showing the world that the struggle ‘Ain’t over! We ain’t finished, not even close, just the beginning’. Watch the lyric video below…and get Reverse The Beat, out now on iTunes!

Dina Delicious:

“I have always fought life’s struggles with a smile and a sunny attitude. Throughout my life, I have had experiences of feeling lost and frustrated. As a young kid in Brooklyn, I was teased mercilessly, beaten and bullied. I never fit in and the trauma from being isolated and alone still haunts me. I think it does for anyone that has been perceived as different. There is always that lump in your throat when you just want to scream and escape, but to where? I could have written a gloomy, sad song but I chose to go the other way with an empowering dance/pop anthem that will make listeners feel good and inspire them to thrive.”

American Slime Story: This Will Give You Nightmares!

Think about this one right before you fall asleep tonight.

A slithering stream of “slime eels” poured out of an overturned truck on U.S. Highway 101 on Oregon coast this afternoon, causing a five-car crash covering the automobiles with a thick white gunk and squirming fish. The animals aren’t actually an eel, but instead are a “hagfish”, a delicacy in Korea, where they were bound.

Photogrpah from Oregon State Police

Officials had to use bulldozers to clear the 7500 pounds of hagfish from the road. They pushed piles of dead and live fish off the road, scooping the white slime away at the same time.

Several cars caught in a pile up that ended up drenched by the fishy sludge had to be abandoned by their drivers. The hagfish clung to dislodged bumpers and their white slime dripped down car windows.

Officials said although a few cars were damaged in the accident, no one was hurt. Except for the poor hagfish.

Koreans love the fish and its slime, using the goop like egg whites. The slime is made of sugars and proteins, and the hagfish use it to trap their own prey. The hagfish’s skin is also used to make purses and wallets, often advertised as “eel-skin”. Hagfish “sneeze” out their slime, and can tie their bodies into a knot to keep the slime from dripping onto their little faces. Hagfish have four pairs of tentacles surrounding their mouths that they use to find food. When they find something that feels yummy, they bury into it face-first to bore a tunnel deep into its flesh.

Fan Art Friday DragCon NYC Edition: Fari Scherwil!

Everyone knows that a huge part of the RuPaul’s Drag Race community is the incredible fan art that emerges season after season. A bevy of new queens pounce on the runway, and artistic fans scramble to recreate their favorite queens. Finding these artistic gems is incredibly easy. Wherever a hashtag exists you’ll be sure to discover new artists who take their love of all things drag and make something amazing.

In anticipation of DragCon NY, we’ve decided to spotlight a few of our fans who create some truly inspiring artwork. We start our series with Iga Wojciechowska. You might know her as Fari Scherwil on Instagram.

Her drawings have caught the attention of various Drag Race Queens, resulting in plenty of likes and reposts. We got to chat with Fari about all things RPDR, why she loves to draw, and who she’d love to see in All Stars 3 !

Who are your artistic influences?

For some reason, I always struggle with this question! I tend to get inspired by styles rather than individuals, mixing classical painting with comics and adding a dash of glitter. Everything at once and nothing in particular.

Is Illustration your full-time job?

I wish! It’s my dream to pursue illustration full-time. I come from a more technical background, currently working as a designer in architectural industry (which probably sounds more exciting than it is).

What compels you to draw Drag Race Fan Art?

The possibilities. I aim for spontaneity of interpretation that allows me to put my own twist on the Queens’ looks – in simpler terms, I love playing around with colors and references until I’m satisfied with the final result. Being all about the freedom of expression, drag lets me go crazy with my favorite form of art – portraits. There’s just so much to choose from, you don’t know where to begin.

I also enjoy being a part of such a vivid community, and receiving feedback from the queens themselves is extremely motivating! It’s my way of giving something back and showing support for their wonderful craft.

Who are your favorite Drag Queens?

My all-time Drag Race favorites are Manila, Katya and Trixie. In season nine [of RuPaul’s Drag Race], I absolutely fell in love with Trinity and Sasha, making it all the more difficult to choose a winner. They were all so gorgeous.

Will you be attending Drag Con? Have you ever before?

Maybe next year! If I believe in it, it’ll happen. I’ve never even been to the US, but that would be one of my first stops if I ever made the trip.

Who would you love to see in All Stars 3?

Let’s face it, Trixie has to come back, and I’d be overjoyed to see Trinity Taylor again. You can’t really go wrong with any cast, though!

For more of Fari’s artwork, be sure to follow her on Instagram,  Twitter and Tumblr as she continues to share her beautiful art! We can’t wait to see what she does next.

New Music Friday: Kesha Is A MOTHER F*CKIN WOMAN! Listen To Her Powerful New Anthem HERE!

F*CK YES! Kesha’s comeback is officially HERE!

I love Kesha. I always have unabashedly loved her catchy songs from when Tik Tok first came out to basically every other song after that. It broke my heart when she came forward about all the troubles she’s suffered under that producer who will not be named.

After she took some time off to battle him in court and work on herself, I hoped beyond all hope that she would make an incredible comeback in the music world. If her first two releases following her long hiatus are any indication, it’s that Kesha is back and better than f*cking ever.

Praying in itself was a strong, soulful ballad that pulls at the heartstrings while she sings about the turmoil that has made her into the strong WOMAN she is today…

Which leads us to her second song, Woman, she’s released post everything that’s been happening to her and DAMN is its a good song. Not only is Woman, featuring The Dap-King Horns, catchy AF, it’s also an inspiring anthem for everyone, everywhere.

Seriously. Listen to the track below, but be prepared, because it’s about to be on repeat for you ALLLLL weekend long. I’ve already listened 10 times in the last two hours. Obsessed.

Barcelona-based band Evripidis and His Tragedies, fronted by queer artist Evripidis Sabatis, is once again on that romantic journey tip, on new track Dreamboat. The perfectly pop tune at first seems to be just another sappy missive about boys, with lyrics like ‘I dream all day of all those things we do…If only you were mine’. But, in the video, director David Domingo (aka Stanley Sunday) plays with surrealism and dark humor. Evripidis debuts his new song at what seems to be some sort of performance art show. The invited guests are members of the Barcelona pop scene, and even though they are far from impressed by the performance and the song, they nod their heads in unison, like some sort of bizarre Stepford Wives yoga class. Then, at the  2:20 mark, art gets TOO REAL!!! Perhaps Evripidis’ paranoia of receiving disdain from friends, fans and the art elite was all just in his HEAD…LOL!!!

Milo Yiannopoulos’s Book Sales Backfire And He’s Claiming ‘Fake News’!

We all remember when Alt-Right darling, Milo Yiannopoulos, was dropped by Simon & Schuster after a few controversial mishaps. Well, Milo decided to self-publish his new book, Dangerous.  You know how the saying goes: “what goes around, comes around”. When taken to Amazon, his PR agency then stated that Dangerous sold over 100,00 copies. Tsk, tsk. Not true.

The Nielson Bookscan which scans and monitors book sales from almost every digital outlet to retail outlets, including Amazon, claims that Dangerous has only sold 18,268 copies to date across the United States. Adding insult to injury, 152 copies sold in the U. K.

Obviously, being Milo, he’s visibly upset about it not being the astounding success he expected. Milo is now throwing around “fake news” to the reports of the book failing miserably.

Via Paper:

“By now, you may have heard reports claiming we only sold 18,000 copies of Dangerous and that our 100,000 copies claim is exaggerated. I’m happy to report that this is fake news,” he said in a statement. “It’s true that the major booksellers only managed to ship out 18,000 copies to retail customers by the list cutoff. But that’s because they didn’t order enough ahead of time, and have been scrambling to play catchup ever since. The real news is that we’ve received wholesale orders and direct orders of such magnitude that our entire stock of 105,000 books is already accounted for.”

It seems to us, Milo anticipated a higher demand for his hate filled rhectoric   than there really is. The Neilson Bookscan does not take into account wholesale orders into their statistics as most unsold copies end up being returned to the publisher of said book.
