Ricky Martin speaks to Entertainment Weekly about his part in the upcoming American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace and doing his first gay sex scene for the cameras.

“I thought I was going to be more uncomfortable,” the singer revealed when he recalled filming his first on-screen sex scene for the limited series.

“Then the exhibitionism kicked in for a moment and all of a sudden I was naked in bed in front of 20 people from the crew and another actor I met that same day. I was not nervous at all. On the contrary, I was ready to do what needed to be done.”

Well. My goodness. To be a fly on THAT wall, amiright?

Ricky says playing the role also dredged up memories of having to hide his sexuality that he had forgotten.

“There was a scene where Gianni is weak and almost falling on the beach and I touch him and he goes, ‘Don’t touch me! Paparazzi!’ You don’t understand. That took me back to eight years ago when I was in the closet and it just moved me,” he told EW.

The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story also stars Penelope Cruz as Donatella Versace and Darren Criss as Versace’s killer, Andrew Cunanan.It will premiere next year on FX. (via NewNowNext)

Fascinating forum discussions at cavemanworld.com and GayPopBuzz about Homo heidelbergensis  – cavemen who lived during the Paleolithic era (700,000 to 200,000 years ago)  – and who are credited with being the first early human species to hunt large animals and build shelters.

Todd Price over at GayPopBuzz notes they were also probably the first hominid group to act upon feelings of same-sex attraction.

“There were likely gay cavemen,” Price writes in a fascinating new article. “What’s more, there were probably Paleolithic tops and bottoms. Shoot, there could have even been versatile cave gays.”

So what was hooking up like for these guys anyway?

Price explains that anthropologists really aren’t sure, but most believe there weren’t any laws or religious orders dictating that homosexuality was immoral or wrong. So, chances are, cave people just followed their hearts (or loins) and had sex with whomever they desired without giving it a whole lot of thought.

A writer named Miko over at cavemanworld.com agrees:

During the late Stone Age, tribal social structures were not very complex. The men would hunt, build, and protect the tribe. Women would serve as wives, nurture the young, and look after the village while the men were away hunting.

One theory is when all the males in the tribe went off hunting, some members of the group would develop an attraction towards their fellow hunting partners. Such could be the result of complex interpersonal social interaction between members of the same gender.

Then, Price says, there were alpha males. He explains:

Our best guess is that most tribes of the era were led by an alpha male. One has to wonder if (as a sign of respect) the alpha was serviced by the others, meaning cavewomen and men.

Imagine for a moment that you were a gay caveman. Draining out the alpha was probably awesome! If you weren’t gay and gravitated towards the females, it still was probably OK.

That’s because during the Paleolithic era, labels didn’t exist. In fact, language was extremely primitive. Anthropologists think they “spoke” using grunts and hand signals.

Alpha males, Price adds, probably weren’t closeted either because “the only way alphas become alphas (in all animal species) is through skill, size and brute force.”

So what’s the takeaway from all this?

Price writes:

We really don’t know much about early man, let alone gay cavemen… [but] it’s safe to say homosexuality has been part of this world since the earliest primates showed up on the geologic time scale. We think that was sixty-five million years ago.

After seeing the cover and reading the feature in this week’s Entertainment Weekly about gay producer/director/writer Ryan Murphy’s new American Crime Story: Versace with cutie Darren Criss playing against type as serial killer Andrew Cunanan, Penélope Cruz as Donatella Versace, and Ricky Martin as Versace’s boyfriend Antonio D’Amico, I just had to learn about the hunk playing the leading role. Here is what I learned:

Édgar Ramírez was born Édgar Filiberto Ramírez Arellano in San Cristobal, Venezuela. I totally dig Latin guys.

His mother is an attorney and his father is a military officer. Because of his father’s work, he grew up in several different countries. He is fluent in Spanish, German, English, French, and Italian.

Ramírez graduated from Venezuela’s Universidad Católica Andrés Bello in 1999 with a degree in Journalism and Political Science. Ramírez:

“I wanted to be a diplomat and journalist. I have a deep fascination with human nature, with all its virtues and all its defects.”

Ramírez became famous in Latin America for his role in the popular telenovela Cosita Rica.

Ramírez had first Hollywood role in the film Dominio (2008), about the life of Domino Harvey, the bounty hunter daughter of gay actor Laurence Harvey. He had interesting supporting roles in: The Bourne Ultimatum (2007), Che (2008), Academy Award winner Zero Dark Thirty (2012), the horror flick Deliver Us From Evil (2014), Joy (2015) with Jennifer Lawrence, Point Break (2015), Hands Of Stone (2016), The Girl On The Train (2016), and Gold (2016). This winter he will be seen in the fantasy film Bright with Will Smith and Joel Edgerton.

Ramírez had his first lead role in Carlos (2010), playing the real life professional assassin Ilich Ramírez Sánchez, aka Carlos The Jackal, the same role he played in The Bourne Ultimatum. He makes a fine killer. His portrayal brought him Cesar Award, plus SAG, Golden Globe, and Emmy Award nominations. Ramírez also appeared in the Clash Of The Titans (2010) and its sequel, Wrath Of The Titans (2012), playing Ares, the God of War.

The Venezuelan actor is a spokesman for Amnesty International’s “No Dispares” (Don’t Shoot) campaign and he is a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF.

American Crime Story: Versace is currently filming in the fashion designers actual Miami mansion Villa Casa Casuarina. It will begin airing in spring 2018. Tom Rob Smith who wrote intriguing London Spy (2016) will pen the limited 10 episodes series with Murphy directing the first episode, like he did for the 10-time Emmy winning, extremely popular first season of American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson.

Aren’t we excited to see it… if we are around in 2018? It’s Ryan Murphy, so you know it’s going to  be juicy. And, aren’t we all looking forward to getting to know Ramírez better?

Remember the time Sarah Palin featured Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffordson on her infamous ‘crosshairs’ map targeting legislators who voted for Obama‘s health care bill? And remember how Palin later tweeted “Don’t retreat, instead RELOAD”? Then remember how someone SOMEHOW got it into their heads that the gun imagery coupled with location of where Giffords was speaking, and the direct order to reload, were all meant as a command to go shoot the congresswoman? So they did?

Well, Sarah Palin is still shocked, SHOCKED, that anyone would think she was somehow partially responsible for the 2011 shooting.

I mean, of all the ridiculous ideas.

The New York Times recently brought the whole mess up again in an op-ed after the shooting of Rep. Steve Scalise at a congressional baseball game. Says Palin’s lawsuit”

The Times falsely stated that an ad from Palin’s political action committee put “Giffords and 19 other Democrats under stylized cross hairs.”

The Times issued a correction the next day stating that the article had mischaracterized the ad (it targets electoral districts, not specific Democratic lawmakers, as the article had previously claimed), and that “no such link was established.”

Palin, though, is now seeking $75,000 in damages from the New York Times for conduct committed, “knowingly, intentionally, willfully, wantonly and maliciously, with the intent harm Mrs. Palin, or in blatant disregard of the substantial likelihood of causing her harm.”

Palin’s legal counsel told Deadline that the Times had, “repeatedly failed to meaningfully retract or correct its column and apologize to Mrs. Palin for publishing it.” In fact, the Times did meaningfully correct the column and issued an apology on Twitter.

Cutie-patootie Damian Friel, a 26-year-old mental health worker from Northern Ireland, has Tourette Syndrome which causes him to make adorable little poppy noises and whistles and say things like “Hey kitten fucker,” “I’m on loads of drugs” and “I have three nipples” all while randomly poking at the air. As difficult as it must be for him, he’s such an open, happy guy, you can’t help but absolutely fall in love him.

Unfortunately, the Tourette’s effects are amplified when he’s experiencing increased anxiety, such as… oh… a blind date with an incredibly attractive man.

Nearby waiters and customers would look over, thinking that Friel’s whistles and vocal tics were meant for them. His date graciously tried to ignore them, but Friel repeatedly apologized and looked visibly embarrassed as he tried to laugh off his tics.

How about some good news? Netflix is developing a new installment of Armistead Maupin’s beloved Tales Of The City. The original version aired on PBS in 1993, and the Conservatives totally lost their shit over it. You know how the hate PBS and LGBTQ people. It won the Peabody Prize and was Emmy Award nominated. The miniseries was originally planned for HBO who dropped the project because it was considered too controversial (isn’t that just too nutty?). It showed up again for two seasons on Showtime as More Tales Of The City (1998), and Further Tales Of The City (2001).

The Netflix limited series would welcome back original stars Laura Linney and Olympia Dukakis. Maupin is set to executive produce and Alan Poul, who directed the original, is to return as well. Michael Cunningham, the Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist of The Hours, has written the script. Tales Of The City was one of the first television shows in the USA to show LGBTQ characters in a way that avoided clichés, and portrayed them with honesty and heart.

The original series and the Showtime reboots followed the original books faithfully while opening-up the story for the camera.

Tales Of The City are actually a series of nine books. The first four were originally serialized prior to their novelization, appearing as regular installments in the San Francisco Chronicle, with the fifth serialized in the San Francisco Examiner.

Tales Of The City follows the adventures of Mary Ann Singleton, a Midwest girl who moves to San Francisco in the mid-1970s. She rents an apartment in a rather magical building at 28 Barbary Lane, owned by mysterious and marijuana-growing landlord Anna Madrigal. She becomes friends with other people in the building: sweet gay boy Michael Tolliver, bisexual hippy Mona Ramsey, ladies’ man Brian Hawkins, and the sinister Norman Neal Williams. There is lots of sex of all sorts, drugs, and plenty of intrigue. It is breathtakingly funny, but also honest and sensitive about issues like coming out of the closet, transgender identity, the horrible era when the plague first appeared, and the wonderful concept of choosing your own family family.

Variety, the showbiz daily, says that the Netflix series is not a done deal, but everything seems to be falling into place.

Current television offers LGBTQ characters of all stripes, but none are as loved as the people who populate Tales Of The City, and after Netflix so rudely cancelled Sense8 without the chance for a finale, bringing Tales Of The City back with that creative team seems like the least that they could do.

Bossip is reporting today that the insufferable Danielle Bregoli Peskowitz aka the “Cash Me Outside” Girl plead guilty to multiple charges today in a Florida court, including filing a false police report on her mother (whom she accused her of using heroin), grand theft, and possession of marijuana – all charges she racked up before her infamous Dr Phil episode.

A judge will sentence Danielle at a hearing next month while her father, Ira Peskowitz, continues to fight for her custody. He says the 14-year-olds lifestyle is inappropriate. Apparently, she has a whole “management” team and it is out here flexing from coast to coast.

Neither Danielle, nor her mother spoke with the media after the proceedings. I guess they’re going to keep it zipped until after the teens sentencing hearing in a few weeks.

Monalisa Perez, 19, was attempting to make a viral video with boyfriend Pedro Ruiz III, 22, by firing a gun into his chest from about a foot away while he held up a book (which he thought would stop the bullet). It did not stop the bullet, and paramedics on the scene said Ruiz died from a single gunshot wound to the chest.

Perez, who is seven months pregnant, called 911 on Monday evening, saying she had accidentally shot her boyfriend in the chest while they were making a video, according to the arrest report.

“They were in love. They loved each other. It was just a prank gone wrong,” Ruiz’s aunt, Claudia Ruiz, told CNN affiliate KVLY. “It shouldn’t have happened like this. It shouldn’t have happened at all.” The couple had one child and were expecting their second together, his aunt told the news station.

Perez told police that her boyfriend wanted to make a YouTube video of her shooting a book and had been talking about it for awhile. He held the book up to his chest and convinced Perez to shoot at him, believing the book would stop the bullet.

Perez told police that Pedro convinced her it was a safe stunt by showing her a different book he had previously shot where the bullet did not go all the way through, according to the arrest report. He set up two cameras to film the whole thing, hoping a video of the dangerous stunt would go viral.

Perez faces up to 10 years in jail and a fine of up to $20,000 if she is convicted of the manslaughter charge against her. She has been released on bail, and as a condition of her release she cannot possess firearms, needs to notify her attorney of her whereabouts and has to wear a GPS monitor, according to court documents. She will be back in court on July 5.

Rob Lowe has a new A&E TV series, The Lowe Files, in which he and his sons hunt urban legends, myths, and monsters. “If you put Anthony Bourdain in a blender with Scooby Doo, you’d get the tone of this show,” he tells Entertainment Weekly – which… sounds… AMAZING. I mean, omg. I am SO THERE.

He goes on to say:

I grew up watching Leonard Nimoy’s In Search Of… I loved it. People always ask me what my guilty pleasure is on television, and my guilty pleasures are Ancient Aliens and Finding Bigfoot. I don’t hate-watch them, but I also don’t watch them as a total believer. I watch them hoping to believe, because a world in which Bigfoot exists and aliens exist, to me, is more interesting and fun. That’s the spirit of our show.

Among the mysterious phenomena they go in search of— an underwater alien base off the coast of Malibu, a reportedly haunted reformatory for boys, and Preston Castle (where they work with a shaman),

Did this show make you more of a believer?
Based on my experiences on the show, particularly around ghosts — absolutely. We captured some incredible [footage]. Our first episode is about poltergeists in one of the most notoriously haunted structures in America. Nothing is staged, nothing is trick-cut — no B.S. I believe there are probably ghosts out there. The rest of [what we found I accepted on a] case-by-case basis, but we had an incredible encounter with what locals call the wood ape, which is in the Ozark Mountains. I’m fully aware that I sound like a crazy, Hollywood kook right now.

Were you genuinely terrified?
Genuinely terrified? I was lying on the ground thinking I was going to be killed.

What exactly is a wood ape?
A wood ape is the local vernacular for a Sasquatch or a Bigfoot. This is what I love about our show. We have fun with all of this. We hit the bullseye between true believer and skeptic in a fun way. [The locals] talk to you about the wood ape in all seriousness. If you call it a Bigfoot or a Sasquatch, they roll their eyes… as if that makes it less outrageous. I don’t want to set up something we don’t deliver on all the time, because if everybody could go out and get great results on all of this, these stories and mysteries would all be solved. Some episodes we had incredible results, and others we just had incredible adventures, and that’s what’s great about it. It’s a case of the journey being as entertaining and fun as the destination.

Seriously, the trailer is really good y’all. The movie, which stars Karen Gillan, Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, and Jack Black, looks lightyears better than I thought it would. The whole short shorts/cutoff shirt controversy had me worried, but I’m satisfied (FOR NOW) with this explanation.

Anyway, after watching the entire trailer, might I say… I’m excited for this? Who knows! It could be really good! The premise manages to not copy the original, while also NOT worrying me about how they’re going to pull the whole movie off.

Four high school students have to do detention, or something, and they come across the Jumanji video game, which sucks them in, like the original, and, well, just watch the trailer below. Seriously.

Also, yes that IS Nick Jonas in the trailer. I paused it to make sure.

All sorts of fabulous offerings at this year’s LA OutFest, including movies starring Drag Race girls (Cherry Pop and Suspiciously Large Woman), a Drag Race judge (Behind the Curtain: Todrick Hall) and MY very own book-turned-movie Freak Show starring Bette Midler, Laverne Cox, Abigail Breslin, AnnaSophia Robb and a star-making turn by young Alex Lawther (The Imitation Game, Black Mirror) as the genderqueer boy running for prom queen at his wildly homophobic high school. It’s the closing night movie – PROMISE ME YOU’LL COME SEE IT!
