Thetis Brings The Arms Forged By Vulcan To Achilles by Henri Regnault (1843-1871)

Regnault embraced the male form and he had a thing for violence and gore. He would be a perfect artist for our own era.

He was the son of a famed chemist, and his career seemed headed for great things when he received the Prix de Rome in 1866. The prize was very big deal, the Academy Award of Painting, and it provided Regnault with the time and the money to study the Classics in Rome, and assured him fame.

Regnault was quickly bored by Rome though, experiencing traveler’s ennui, writing: “The Arch of Titus seems like a toy compared to the Arch of Titus that one has imagined.” He also experienced ennui from the touristy copies of the subjects expected to be knocked-out by the artists working in the Italian capital.

In the summer 1869, he finally left Rome for Africa, Spain and Morocco, seeking the light and colors that he brought to his most successful paintings, and thrilled European art lovers’ fascination for all things exotic.

That skill for depicting gore later seemed to portend Regnault’s own grisly death at Battle Of Buzenval near Paris during The Franco-Prussian War. His boyfriend, painter Georges Clairin, had to tracked down Regnault’s body among the many hundreds of soldiers killed in the battle. He had been shot in the head, gone at 27-years-old.

He was so beloved that monuments, eulogies, and national mourning in France followed. An obelisk in the woods near Buzenval where Regnault had been killed had been erected.

But, soon the art world had moved on and his style of graphic, exotic painting fell out of favor as The Impressionists came in to vogue. You can visit his monument today; you can find it near the 14th hole of a golf course that replaced the battlefield.

His work hangs in the world’s most important museums; his enchanting Salomé is at the Metropolitan Museum Of Art; the violent Automedon With The Horses Of Achilles (1868) can be found at Boston’s Museum Of Fine Arts; and the even more gruesome Summary Execution Under The Moorish Kings Of Grenada (1870) is nicely hung at The Musée d’Orsay in Paris.

Thetis Brings The Arms Forged By Vulcan To Achilles is the painting that won him that Prix de Rome. It’s a work of unusual force and distinction. Note the muscle tone on Achilles, that dude had been hitting the gym! He seems annoyed to have his mother interrupt his hookup.

The Cannes Film Festival kicked off in the South of France this week with the standard red carpet glamour that the annual event always offers. It’s the 70th annual gathering –it’s been going since just after WWII in 1946, and it has developed into a place to feature controversial films, badly behaved superstars, and, of course, lots of memorable red carpet moments.

Check out Kirk Douglas braiding Brigitte Bardot‘s hair, Madonna driving the papps wild in a satin cone bra and remember Tom & Nicole…? Brad & Jen? #BornThisDay: Harvey Milk

harvey-milk-gay-pride-19781

May 22, 1930Harvey Milk, a middle-class Jewish guy from NYC, served in the US Navy during the Korean War and like so many other closeted gay people, he chose San Francisco in the 1970s as that place to open the door to his true self and be in the company of his tribe.

Listen up all you baby gays, there is a history lesson to be learned. Sit down and watch the remarkable Academy Award winning The Times Of Harvey Milk (1984), directed by Rob Epstein, narrated by Harvey Fierstein, with an original score by Mark Isham.

Also essential as a history lesson and an example of truly great filmmaking, you need to watch the powerful Oscar winning Milk (2008), directed by my good close personal friend, Portland’s own Gus Van Sant. Milk received eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, winning two: Best Actor for Sean Penn and Best Original Screenplay for the delectable Dustin Lance Black. Milk conveys a strong moral principal in an extraordinarily potent and stylish way: “What matters is the fight, more than the outcome!” Black’s screenplay is very dense and well organized, following fastidious steps for bringing its message, at the same time respecting the historic chronology, always the perpetual dilemma of a biopic. With a stunning cast, including Josh Brolin, Emile Hirsh, Diego Luna and James Franco, the emotionally charged movie was the winner of The New York Film Critics Circle Best Picture Award for 2008. Van Sant has fashioned a film that is accessible to all, while approaching his subject with sharp focus and a singleness of purpose that is at once definitive and topical. A stunning achievement, Milk manages to make its point without ever being preachy or trite, while remaining as true to the facts as any film bio could ever hope to be, with a perfect cast and lovingly detailed direction.

Milk opens with vintage film clips of gay history that many young gays and especially straight people may be shocked to discover. Less than 40 years ago, gay men, lesbians and transgendered people were subjected to violence, harassment, physical abuse, arrest and humiliation by the very people who are supposed to offer protection for the citizens: the police and judicial authorities. Newsreel footage shows raids on gay bars that today seem bizarre and barbaric. Today’s young gays probably don’t realize that in the 1940s through 1970s, right here in the good old USA, LGBTQ people were arrested for simply patronizing a gay bar. Those arrested had their names and employers published in the newspaper, leaving them jobless and unemployable, forever branded as a pervert.

Van Sant brings out Penn’s best performance ever with a warts-and-all portrait of a frail human with an idealistic bent and a politician’s savvy. Gay film fans can find a real sense of pride and purpose from seeing Milk, and straights can gain a better knowledge of just who gay people are, what they want, and why they still must fight for acceptance. Milk is a triumph and a must see film.

According to people who actually knew him, some of whom are friends of mine; Milk was no saint and not an easy man. He had a temper and a stubborn streak. But his sense of independence freed him from compromising party politics, allowing him to be controlled by his conscience rather than a debt owed to special interest groups. A true patriot, Milk had an absolute allegiance to The Declaration Of Independence and our Constitution. He brought a defiant defense of individual rights and individual participation in our political process. The gay political establishment in San Francisco pushed against Milk, the man and the idea. As an openly gay man, Milk knew that whoever holds the power, dictates the limits of our individuality.

“It takes no compromise to give people their rights…it takes no money to respect the individual. It takes no political deal to give people freedom. It takes no survey to remove repression.”

Milk was one of the true political pioneers of the 20th century.  He was the first openly gay person to be elected to public office when he won his seat on the San Francisco Board Of Supervisors in 1978. Now, 39 years later, all 50 states have been served by an openly gay person elected official.  My representative to the Oregon State House, openly gay Tina Kotek, lives in my neighborhood. Oregon is currently served by a popular openly bisexual Governor, Kate Brown, up for reelection and certain to win.

“Coming out is the most political thing you can do.”

Milk’s struggles and his successes show that there is really no such thing as a “Gay Agenda”, there is simply freedom for all Americans. His energy and his eloquent voice spoke for all minorities, all the voiceless citizens who are crushed in the American cultural conformity.

“All I ever seek is to open up a dialogue that involves all of us.”

People told Milk that no openly gay man could possibly win political office. Thankfully for all of us, Milk ignored them. He knew that emotional trauma of being in the closet was a gay person’s worst enemy, worse than the haters. That made the election of an openly gay person crucial, practically and symbolically.

“You gotta give them hope. Hope will never be silent.”

There was a time not all that long ago when it was impossible to imagine Harvey Milk. Most people, straight and gay, had to adjust to what he represented: a gay person could live their life with honesty and still succeed in this world. That revelation continues to this day as the rights of gay people move baby steps forward with Equality, and then a step backwards with Religious Freedom laws like the ones that the current administration promises. With every gay character on television and film, with full Marriage Equality in every state, with each politician of any party that embraces the rights of LGBTQ people, and each state that adds Equal Protection laws, we find that unequivocal equality becomes unquestionable, and that is due in large part to Harvey Milk.

“If a bullet should enter my brain, let that bullet destroy every closet door.”

Tragically, an assassin’s bullet did silence Milk’s voice, but not his momentum. Milk would have celebrated his 86th birthday today.

I have a full sheet of USPS Harvey Milk stamps purchased on the first day that they were issued in April 2014. My talented husband framed them for me. I see Milk’s image every day. Calling slain civil rights hero Harvey Milk a “predator”, that charming Fundamentalist Christian organization, American Family Association (AFA), urged its members to refuse any mail postmarked with a Harvey Milk. They issued the following statement:

“Harvey Milk was a very disreputable man and used his charm and power to prey on young boys with emotional problems and drug addiction. He is the last person we should be featuring on a stamp.”

A sheet of commemorative stamps honoring Harvey Milk, the California politician and gay rights icon, are photographed at a U.S. Post Office in San Francisco, Thursday, May 22, 2014. The stamps were released today. (AP Photo/Jeff Chiu)

Last July, the U.S. Navy announced that they would be naming a ship to honor Milk. The USNS Harvey Milk, which hasn’t been built yet, is the latest in a series of Navy vessels named for civil rights icons. Who knows with the current POTUS; he and his sidekick Pence may change those plans and name the ship after Jerry Falwell.  As a young man, Milk served in the Navy as a diving officer during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged from the service with the rank of lieutenant in 1955. Cleve Jones:

“I have no idea what Harvey would think of this. He has been dead a long time. I can tell you I have mixed feelings. It is obviously an indication that gay people are more accepted than they were when he lived. And I think he would be glad of that. But he did not like war.”

The fight is far from over. Today marks the eighth Harvey Milk Day, a legal holiday in California. How about a national holiday in Milk’s honor?

2017 Billboard Music Awards: Three Words –Drake, Celine & Cher!

Ludacris with Hudgens in her Cher homage look

The 2017 Billboard Music Awards spent most of its three plus hours, hosted by Vanessa Hudgens and Ludacris, with 15 performances that ran the gamut of genres…

But Drake literally walked away with the show snatching 13 awards, beating Adele with the most wins in one night. Drake racked up 10 awards in the pre-telecast, and one for Top Male Artist before getting Top Artist, beating Adele’s record. It’s pretty well-deserved, considering he dominated last year with Views. He also delivered a show-stopping performance in the middle of the fountain at the Bellagio. Midway through the telecast he said:

It’s crazy that we’re all here on earth for a limited amount of time, and we gotta show love while we’re here… Vanessa Hudgens, you look incredible tonight.

Later Hudgens said that she was on the invite list for his afterparty, so…

Twenty One Pilots and Beyoncé were also big winners on the night, with five BBMAs apiece and The Chainsmokers earned four.

Nicki Minaj

Nicki Minaj opened the show with medley that included her Remy Ma diss track No Frauds, with Lil Wayne, David Guetta‘s Light My Body Up, Jason Derulo‘s Swalla and her own Regret In Your Tears.

Diddy payed tribute to The Notorious B.I.G. on what would have been his 45th birthday and debuted the trailer for his upcoming Bad Boy Records documentary Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop.

Camila Cabello and Miley Cyrus both delivered the live debuts of their new singles and Lorde performed her Green Light as if it were awkward karaoke tune. That country fox Sam Hunt and the amazing John Legend turned in two memorable performances as well.

Celine Dion –inside a giant crystal chandelier– performed My Heart Will Go On for the 20th anniversary of Titanic, singing the challenging track seemingly without effort and getting extended standing O. One of THE big moments of the night.

But no one is bigger than Cher in Vegas. She was presented the Icon Award by Gwen Stefani who said she has “proved there’s nothing she cannot do”, but not before she brought the house to their feet doing her iconic Believe and If I Could Turn Back Time with completely different looks for each performance (a day after her 71st birthday, she pointed out.)

I’ve wanted to do what I do since I was four years old, and I’ve been doing it for 53 years. I think luck has so much to do with with my success… I think it was mostly luck and a little bit of something thrown in.

Yes, that little bit of something that she has a LOT of.

Watch.

Billy Bush Speaks Out About His Bus Chat with Trump, “I Wish I’d Changed the Topic…”

Disgraced TV host Billy Bush, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter about the now infamous Access Hollywood tape with Trump that got him axed from the Today show,

“I will admit the irony is glaring. [Trump] has his process for his participation [in the tape], and I have mine. I had to turn this into a positive.

Looking back on what was said on that bus, I wish I had changed the topic. I wish I had said: ‘Does anyone want water?’ or ‘It looks like it’s gonna rain.’ He liked TV and competition. I could’ve said, ‘Can you believe the ratings on whatever?’ I didn’t have the strength of character to do it.”

He does not agree with Trump’s excuse that the comments were just “locker room talk.”

“I‘m in a lot of locker rooms, I am an athlete, and no, that is not the type of conversation that goes on or that I’ve participated in.”

Asked if he would ever interview the President,

“I don’t think I’d interview Trump. It would be a spectacle. In television, we love a spectacle, but I’ve come too far and learned too much. There are others that I’d rather interview, like Emmanuel Macron of France.”

After Indian Massage “Reawakened Her Sexuality”, Former Tibetan Nun Is Now a Fetish Queen!

Dyson with her former self

Damcho Dyson’s only habit was her plain religious robe but she says after an Indian massage reawakened her sexuality and she quit her Tibetan Buddhist monastery in France. She now spends her weekends in latex at fetish clubs. She told the London’s Mirror,

I’d been celibate for 10 years and, as a nun, my practice meant my brain was able to override my bodily needs.

Lying there having that massage I had an epiphany. I suddenly had a sense of the vitality within my body and decided the time was right to leave the monastery.

I’d been a nun for ten years and was open to new opportunities so when I spotted the shop I thought ‘why not’ and headed inside.

The first time I tried on latex I felt empowered. It compliments the female form and somehow felt reminiscent of the ritual wearing of Buddhist robes. The shop owner and I became friends and she introduced me to the latex scene.

I went to a club feeling all risqué, but I looked at other people wearing top-to-toe latex and rubber masks and realised I was actually quite conservative. I find the whole thing amazing and intriguing. It’s really liberating.”

Damcho is now crowdfunding her PhD exploring human rituals and she says she has no regrets.

I travelled around the Himalayas. It was incredibly enriching and inspiring for me. But now I want to continue my contemplative adventure using a different medium. I still feel a bit like a naughty nun. But I’m a middle-aged woman who has always liked to express herself so why not?

I’m finally letting my hair down when I once used to shave it all off.”

Why not –to each her own. As Mama Ru always says,

We’re all born naked… the rest is drag.”

Upon their arrival in Israel this morning, President Trump and First Lady Melania walked a tarmac red carpet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife Sara. The takeaway from this is when Trump goes to grab his wife’s hand. She deftly shoes him away and continues walking. Good for her. She doesn’t know where that hand has been.

BREAKING SCANDAL: Did Migos Refuse to Perform w/ Drag Queens on SNL w/ Katy Perry???

Oh gurrrl…Until you do right by the QUEENS, everything you even think about gonna fail! Well, that might be a little extreme, but as long as Katy Perry associates with Migos, there’s gonna be drama…and here’s what you didn’t see on Perry’s performance this past weekend on Saturday Night Live. (above pic via SNL IG)

On the season finale of SNL, Katy Perry performed her new single Swish Swish, along with a ton of NYC-based drag queens and performers…including Brenda Dharling, Lil Miss Hot MessBryant Dorean, Scarlet Envy, Gisele Alicea, Brita Filter, Yuhua Hamasaki, Pattaya Hart, Kimberly Smallz LaBeija, Alotta McGriddles, Svetlana Stoli, Miss Vita Summers, Jose Gutierez Xtravaganza (Madonna’s Blonde Ambition tour dancer), The Countess Mascara, RuPaul’s Drag Race, Season 6 contestant Vivacious…and super viral star Russell Got Barzz– who got famous after Rihanna re-posted a video of him dancing last year.

Instagram Photo

But the GAG is what happened surrounding Perry’s second performance, for song Bon Appétit, featuring rap group Migos. It seems that there were also three drag queens who rehearsed to be in that performance as well. When Migos found out, they allegedly said that they were not comfortable with drag queens around, and then asked that they be removed from the performance.

Queen #1:

“I was one of the performers on that table with them the whole time, during the rehearsal for 3 days ( I’m the one with black hair and a black outfit). On the day of the filming, when I got there, I was told to leave. I wasn’t on the set at the time, but we were asking what happened. They said it was because Migos doesn’t feel comfortable with having drag queens there.”

Queen #2:

“I heard it from the stylist. They changed the queens out in the Bon Appétit number, and they didn’t seem too thrilled during rehearsal either, with us there.”

This is the second time there has been backlash for Katy Perry’s association with Migos. In February, Migos came under fire for apparent homophobic comments by group member Quavo in Rolling Stone, about rapper/singer iLoveMakonnen who recently came out as gay on Twitter (reposted on his Instagram). Fans have been livid ever since, and this latest stunt seems to confirm that

Will the Ground Swallow Trump?! Sink Hole Opens Right in Front of Mar-a-Lago!

Trump might be away now, but there’s big news coming out of Mar-a-Lago. A sinkhole opened up directly in front of the members-only resort today, the town of Palm Beach reported. The hole measures about four feet in diameter and is on Southern Boulevard near the resort’s south entrance.

Are the gates of hell trying to swallow up Trump? Unknown. The cause is currently unclear, the Palm Beach Daily News reported, although it is near a new water main. Utility crews on the scene are reportedly currently working to excavate the hole and determine the problem. (Do they need a priest too?)

The hole may not be a cause for concern for Trump and Mar-a-Lago’s wealthy members because the resort usually closes for the season after Mother’s Day. Trump is expected to spend the summer in his Bedminster, New Jersey, estate.

Watch out for sinkholes, New Jersey!

New Couple Alert: Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost Were Making Out at the SNL After-Party!

In what is probably the most EARTH-SHATTERING CELEBRITY NEWS OF MY LIFETIME, Page Six is reporting that international sex goddess Scarlett Johansson was spotted making out with white-bread pretty-boy Colin Jost at the Saturday Night Live season finale after-party. Like, IN FRONT OF EVERYONE. At the bar. On multiple occasions. And they “couldn’t keep their hands off each other.”

Via New York Magazine:

Johansson – who recently filed for divorce from husband Romain Dauriac – stopped by the SNL finale to reprise her Ivanka Trump impression, and Jost was clearly taken by the performance. “Scarlett and Colin were making out at the bar at the ‘SNL’ season finale party at 30 Rock … They would make out a bit, then go back to talking,” one observer described. “They were at the bar in front of everyone … they made out at least twice … Then they went back to talking and hanging with other people.”

Adds another onlooker: “Scarlett and Colin were flirting and canoodling in full view of everyone at the afterparty, including the ‘SNL’ cast and crew. They were laughing and seemed to really hit it off.”

No reaction yet from Leslie Jones.

Jost, you may recall, first hit the celebrity scene back in 2013 as a lowly SNL writer who had the good fortune of dating Rashida Jones. Which upped his Q factor enough to allow him a spot on the show. Methinks he knows exactly what he’s doing. Expect sitcom or movie roles to follow.

That Dress! That Dress! Let’s All Reflect on Celine Dion’s Billowing Dream of a Dress from Last Night’s Billboard Awards!

It was the dress that caused a billion gasps world-wide and set Twitter ablaze.

Celine Dion, god bless her, appeared onstage last night at the Billboard Awards to sing a 20th anniversary rendition of “My Heart Will Go.” Which is terribly exciting in and of itself. But when the lights went up, we saw she was wearing an “angel-winged, long sleeve and body-conscious gown by Stephane Rolland Haute Couture” that defied gravity and beggared the imagination.

Says the star’s stylist, Law Roach:

“I think [when people see it] they are really going to have that clutch my pearl, that deep sigh moment. You will remember her performance and her voice, but you will also remember her dress. No doubt about it,” stylist Law Roach tells Billboard exclusively.

Oh, no doubt about it. Those cumulous cloud/crumpled Kleenex shoulders are seared forever in my mind. It’s the dress that will no doubt inspire a hundred thousand drag performances. And PLEEEEEASE let somebody do Celine in that dress next year on “Snatch Game”!

From Billboard:

The phenomenal sculpture-like dramatic shoulders showcases Dion’s svelte 5’7” frame and the deep plunging neckline with silver hardware detailing adds a very modern touch to her monochromatic statement-making yet timeless piece. Letting her legendary vocal prowess and the dramatic gown speak for itself, Roach kept the accessories minimal with a ring by Harry Kotlar.

The performance is a celebration of her 20th anniversary since releasing the classic Billboard Hot 100 hit, “My Heart Will Go On”, but it also marks the one-year anniversary of meeting her friend and stylist, Law Roach.

“I think I’ve really grown to know who Celine is as an artist, a woman, and as fashion girl. I don’t think a lot of people got to see that before and it’s so fun for me to be able to show people through our fashion choices exactly who this woman is that we all grew up listening to our entire lives,” he adds. “It’s fun to see her out and about and really having fun, taking risks and doing all types of things that’s really still kind of unexpected for her.”

Yes, let’s gasp again, and clutch our pearls again, and let out that deep sigh again. Check out the red carpet pics below.

It’s TOO MUCH! TOO FABULOUS! My heart can’t go on!

#ManCrushMonday: Reporter, Michael Barbaro

Yale grad, Michael Christopher Barbaro is a national political reporter for The NY Times and the host of the terrific and wonderfully succinct podcast The Daily. He is one of the best and most astute reporters about politics. After the Democratic and Republican conventions last year, Barbaro decided that he would step back from daily writing to try something new: hosting the podcast.

Until last week, I had never listened to a podcast before. My life is rather full writing #BornThisDay and #OnThisGayDay pieces for The Wow Report, working in my garden, walking my terriers and making my way through my DVR queue, but after seeing Barbaro on an episode of Late Night With Seth Meyers, I was captivated by his charm, intelligence and exotic, swarthy good-looks.

The Daily is now number two in the iTunes podcast rankings. A survey showed 97% of respondents as enthusiastic fans of the podcast. Nearly all of them felt more connected to the work of Barbaro and the other NY Times journalists who appeared regularly as guests on the show than from just reading the traditional paper or looking at it online. For The NY Times, it was a powerful demonstration of how a podcast can deliver journalism to a new, possibly younger, audience.

Bararo’s style is warm, inclusive and conversational. He still brings his deep reporting and sharp editorial thinking that always characterized his pieces in the NY Times paper. Lucky for me, each episode of The Daily is only about 15-minutes long and takes on just one or two stories from the news cycle. Slowly, episode by episode, Barbaro has been revealing the man behind the microphone too. His banter is the best part of the broadcast. He has even developed a catchphrase “As we say on this show: “sometimes life gets in the way”.

In fall 2014, Barbaro married his boyfriend Timothy Levin at their apartment in NYC. It’s okay; I’m married too. I can still have a man crush on him.

Intriguing Axe Body Spray Commercial Asks “Is It Okay To Experiment With Other Guys?”

In their new commercial, Axe Body Spray (previously the sole domaine of douchebags everywhere) asks real questions guys search for every day on Google. Question like: Is it OK to be skinny? Is it OK to be a virgin? Is it OK to experiment with other guys? To wear pink? To have long hair? To be the little spoon?

The ad sums it up at the end asking, “Is it okay for guys to be themselves?”

Says the commercial:

“It’s time to stop questioning what defines masculinity, because there’s no one way to be “a man.” Just be you”

Via NewNowNext:

As part of its Find Your Magic Initiative, the men’s body spray fragrance brand has released a new campaign video, “Is It Ok For Guys?,” based on a recent study showing that “72% of guys have been told how a real man should behave.”

Axe has partnered with the non-profits Promundo, Representation Project, and Ditch the Label to better understand and address the issues that young men face while trying to live their most authentic lives.

The masculinity-redefining initiative is an extension of last year’s LGBT-inclusive Find Your Magic campaign, which also focused on masculinity’s many different variations.

Pretty impressive. Watch below.

#RIP: “James Bond” Actor, Sir Roger Moore

Roger Moore, who portrayed James Bond in seven films has died. A message from his children, shared Tuesday on the actor’s official Twitter account, read,

It is with a heavy heart that we must announce our loving father, Sir Roger Moore, has passed away today in Switzerland after a short but brave battle with cancer.

Before Bond, Moore made his reputation as a suave leading man on the television series Maverick, The Saint and The Persuaders. Moore took on the guise of the superspy in Live and Let Die (1973) and stayed for The Man With the Golden Gun (1974), The Spy Who Loved Me (1977), Moonraker (1979), For Your Eyes Only (1981), Octopussy (1983) and A View to a Kill (1985).

His Bond was much more of a charmer than a fighter, than the first Bond, Sean Connery.

My personality is entirely different than previous Bonds. I’m not that cold-blooded killer type. Which is why I play it mostly for laughs.

In a 2014 interview, Moore lamented the fact that he pretty much always played the good guy.

I wasn’t an Albert Finney or a Tom Courtenay. I didn’t have their natural talent, I had to work quite hard at acting. My life’s been all right, but people like that get to play wonderful parts. I spent my life playing heroes because I looked like one. Practically everything I’ve been offered didn’t require much beyond looking like me. I would have loved to have played a real baddie.

In 1999, Moore was awarded the Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II, and knighthood followed in 2003. He spent the past several years doing charity work as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.

Moore told NPR in November 2014:

I look like a comedic lover, and Sean [Connery] in particular, and Daniel Craig now, they are killers. They look like killers. I wouldn’t like to meet Daniel Craig on a dark night if I’d said anything bad about him.

George [Lazenby], Timothy [Dalton] and Pierce [Brosnan], we’ve been together, the four of us. But Sean, Sean really was sort of not that enamored of being confused with James Bond all the time. Sean … damn good actor, but he felt that he was only being remembered for Bond. I personally don’t give a damn. I just want to be remembered as somebody who paid his debts.”

Roger Moore was 89.

You Must Read Monica Lewinsky’s Scathing Goodbye to Roger Ailes in the New York Times

Longtime wowlebrity and anti-cyberbullying advocate Monica Lewinsky writes movingly of her experiences with FOX news in the wake of former former Fox News chairman and CEO Roger Ailes death, remembering him the man who built a media empire on the back of her affair with former President Bill Clinton. She also notes, quite correctly, that our whole “culture of humiliation” – of cyberbullying and chyrons, trolls and tweets – was forged on FOX news in 1998, during her very public takedown.

She writes in the New York Times:

“This is not another obituary for Roger Ailes, who died last week a year after being ousted at Fox News. It is, I hope, instead an obituary for the culture he purveyed — a culture that affected me profoundly and personally.”

“Just two years after Rupert Murdoch appointed Mr. Ailes to head the new cable news network, my relationship with President Bill Clinton became public. Mr. Ailes, a former Republican political operative, took the story of the affair and the trial that followed and made certain his anchors hammered it ceaselessly, 24 hours a day.

“It worked like magic: The story hooked viewers and made them Fox loyalists. For the past 15 years, Fox News has been the No. 1 news station; last year the network made about $2.3 billion.

“Some experts have noted that viewers found Fox for the first time because of the crisis. John Moody, a Fox executive editor, reflected on that period: “The Lewinsky saga put us on the news map.” As he put it in another interview: “Monica was a news channel’s dream come true.”

“Their dream was my nightmare. My character, my looks and my life were picked apart mercilessly. Truth and fiction mixed at random in the service of higher ratings. My family and I huddled at home, worried about my going to jail — I was the original target of Kenneth Starr’s investigation, threatened with 27 years for having been accused of signing a false affidavit and other alleged crimes — or worse, me taking my own life. Meantime, Mr. Ailes huddled with his employees at Fox News, dictating a lineup of talking heads to best exploit this personal and national tragedy.

“For myriad reasons — information gathering, boredom (I couldn’t leave my home without being trailed by paparazzi) and a touch of masochism — I watched the news around the clock. On Fox, it seemed, no rumor was too unsubstantiated, no innuendo too vile and no accusation too abhorrent.

“Just as television news was devolving into a modern coliseum, the internet came along and compounded this culture of shame and vitriol. Remember: The story of my affair was not broken by The Washington Post, The New York Times or the networks, but online by the Drudge Report. The comments on television and online were excruciating. I ceased being a three-dimensional person. Instead I became a whore, a bimbo, a slut and worse. Just days after the story broke, Fox asked its viewers to vote on this pressing question: Is Monica Lewinsky an “average girl” or a “young tramp looking for thrills”?

Read the whole piece here. It’s absolutely fascinating, and renews our respect for this dynamic, compelling, and gifted woman. One

Monarx

Age
: 22

Location: New York, New York

About:

“I am a fashion photographer, performance artist, and a queer LGBTQ activist. My name Monarx is inspired by the butterfly who transforms from something small into something beyond. I started doing drag from birth. When I was a kid, I always loved dressing up and playing with makeup. In the midst of the awkward middle school and high school years, I suffered from Alopecia and lost my hair. During that formative time, I learned how to make wigs and play with makeup. Looking different, in a way you can’t control, makes you feel alienated. So, I took control, and I found liberation is being able to transform myself into anything I wanted with fashion. I’ve always been really inspired by more unconventional drag and draw a lot of references from the character Queen Amidala from Star Wars. It would be criminal if I didn’t say Björk, Nick Knight, and Alexander McQueen influenced me heavily.

As far as the future, I want to take everything to the next level. I just revamped my Instagram, and currently use it as my little gallery to tell the story of Monarx. I have been taking some time away from NYC to really be in a quiet place; away from stimulus, so I could hear my mind. I’m working on developing Monarx the character, and have been working on short conceptual films + original sounds. Monarx brings all my skill sets together into one cohesive lifelong project.
I just signed with a new agency  in NYC. I can’t talk about yet. It’s being launched by a nightlife legend that represents freaks like me in modeling, and as a performer. I’m just getting started… and ready to land back in NYC any minute.
Above all, I’m continuing my fight for civil rights. I work with queer youth as a mentor in empowerment and organizing the resistance in this backwards time. Together we can change the world…join me, and stay tuned!”

Ariana Grande’s Mother Helped Rush Fans to Safety During the Chaos

TMZ is reporting that Ariana Grande‘s mother Joan heroically helped escort panicked young fans backstage and out of harm’s way during the melee at the Manchester Arena. She had apparently been sitting in the front row, waiting to go backstage to see her daughter, when the bomb went off.

As the chaos of people fleeing for exits started … Joan told a group of kids — possibly as many as 10 — seated around her to come backstage. We’re told she and members of Ariana’s security took the fans backstage and waited with them until they were able to safely exit the arena.

Ariana has been understandably distraught since the attack, and is unsure whether she will continue her tour.
