Queer icons B Scott, Gus Kensworthy, and our very own Big Freedia are featured in the very first pride campaign for MeUndies online underwear retailers entitled “Celebrate Yourself.”

“It was definitely something that was more edgy than normal campaigns that I do,” Freedia said in an interview. “It was a new adventure for me and felt fun and creative.”

MeUndies has announced that every pair sold will include a $1 donation to the Los Angeles LGBT Center to help expand its youth center.

“Our team is bursting with people who consider themselves part of the community, so we all felt compelled to get involved,” MeUndies creative director Andrew Teague said in an interview. “That doesn’t happen by sitting in your office thinking you can just tell people how to feel and what to buy. It happens when you engage with the world.”

“We never saw this as a chance to tick the gay box,” Teague said. “We’re certainly not walking away, patting ourselves on the back after Pride Month — we are already talking with the center about some more long-term ways in which we can support them.”

Check out the fabulous photos by celebrity photographer Andrew Yee.

Leibovitz’s full portfolio will be online tomorrow, along with our story on the making of the new film, written by David Kamp.

• THE FORCE: Daisy Ridley as Resistance warrior Rey and Mark Hamill as mentor Luke Skywalker, on location in Ireland.

• THE DARK SIDE: First Order leaders Captain Phasma, Kylo Ren, and General Hux, played by Gwendoline Christie, Adam Driver, and Domhnall Gleeson.

• THE RESISTANCE: Oscar Isaac, John Boyega, and Kelly Marie Tran as the rebels Poe Dameron, Finn, and Rose Tico, with droid BB-8.

• THE LEGACY: No reflection on the franchise’s four decades would be complete without a tribute to Carrie Fisher, who died in December 2016. This final cover features only her character, Leia—the general, princess, and rebel who has been a figure central to the Star Wars universe from the very outset.

The Summer issue of Vanity Fair will be on newsstands in New York and Los Angeles on May 31, and nationally on June 6.

In this short-but-achingly-sweet trailer, a young boy spots his secret crush and “runs the risk of being outed by his own heart after it pops out of his chest to chase down the boy of his dreams.”

You WILL have all the feels after watching it.

In A Heartbeat was created by two animation students at the Ringling College of Art and Design in Florida, Beth David and Esteban Bravo.

“We want to put out a message of love and self acceptance to all the kids and young people who struggle to identify as LGBT+ just like[the boy] Sherwin does,” David said.

The film, partly funded via a 2016 viral Kickstarter campaign, is set to be released for free online this summer. (via Queerty)

Looks like all those cosplay outfits really rubbed off on Drag Race season 8 fan fave Dax ExclamationPoint. Over the weekend she became a real-lifesuperhero after saving the life of a gunshot victim!

Dax was attending a Season 9 viewing party at Mary’s in east Atlanta, when suddenly the bar patrons all heard a gunshot. Moments later, the victim staggered to the backdoor of the bar, bleeding and in need of help.

According to NewNowNext:

The man arrived with a gunshot wound through the leg, so Dax tore off the Violet Chachki T-shirt he was wearing and used it to create a tourniquet to stop the bleeding.

“Luckily the bullet went right through and no major arteries were hit… it was jarring but everyone is alright now,” Dax wrote on Twitter, adding that police arrived quickly and took care of the man.

Is It Time To Bring Back The Look of Fashion Icon, Mr. Rogers?

$

We live in the age of dumb and mean. And, we live in an era with a POTUS that wears ill-fitting suits with pants that drag on the floor and ties longer than the crotch. No wonder he is angry all the time. He looks dreadful. Here is 45’s fashion advice:

“The beauty of me is that I’m very rich.”

Fred Rogers:

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me: ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.'”

I was thinking about him today while reading my feed on The Facebook, especially the posts about the Manchester murders.

Usually when you say that someone is “nice”, you are really saying nothing at all. Either you don’t know them all that well or you are just not thinking about it all that much. It doesn’t matter. Fred Rogers was nice. He was nice in a meaningful, sincere way. He might have been the nicest man to ever appear on television. And, his signature sweater/trouser/sneaker look is nice too. It’s a combination that has, against all odds, never gone out of style.

Mr. Rogers was a man of action. He didn’t think what was being broadcast on television was good enough for kids. So, he decided to change it himself. For more than three decades, he did. He taught kids how to tackle their first day of school. He taught children to be themselves. He taught them how to carry a tune. Some people who grew-up with his show think his was the greatest television show of all time. You probably watched it as a kid. Most young people did. You are probably better for it.

But, today I want you to consider his status as a true Style Icon, and the greatest examples of how to achieve a Gay Mr. Rogers Style. In every episode, Mr. Rogers would pop in the door wearing a blazer, a dress shirt, a tie and some slim trousers with the perfect modern break. He would then go to (but not in) the closet and replace that perfect blazer with a cool cardigan. Then, he’d sit down and slide his dress shoes off and slip into his famous blue sneakers before dispensing wise platitudes. You kids could rock this look nowadays and never look anything less than adorbs.

If you doubt his Style Icon status, consider that his red cardigan and the sneakers are in a permanent exhibit at the Smithsonian Institute. That must mean something!

To get that Mr. Rogers look is simple, yet difficult. No matter what the rest of your closet has in it, you need to have one excellent white and one excellent blue button-down shirt. I can’t find any episode where he isn’t wearing either a white or blue button-down.

You only need two shirts, but you should have lots of ties. They can be solid. They can be polka dot. They can be striped. The tie can be anything, because Rogers didn’t do busy sweaters, or nutty colors and patterns in his shirts. This allows you to choose which tie to wear based on how you are feeling, and not on how well it will go with the rest of your clothing.

Wear simple trousers, and simpler belts, no fancy buckles and no odd colors, brown or black belts every gosh darn time. In our own era, jeans are fine. I can’t imagine a modern gay guy leaving his good trousers on when he gets home from work. Be comfortable, but never sloppy. You want to look smart, but not too composed, when you Grindr hook-up arrives.

To really achieve the Mr. Rogers look, you must have some variation of cardigan sweater. Here is where you can be bold with the colors, although some colors are bolder than others. Because of Mr. Rogers, generations of people think of the cardigan as a warm, inviting piece of clothing for only the very nicest people in the world.

Mr. Rogers:

“I like you just the way you are.”

Unconditional acceptance, arguably the most positive and compassionate message that any LGBTQ child, youth, or adult could have found anywhere on television during Rogers’ tenure.

Sadly, it’s been 14-years since the passing of America’s favorite neighbor. Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood ran from 1968 to 2001, with an astonishing 895 episodes. This means that just about everyone over 20-years-old has an indelible image in their memory of Mr. Rogers, dressed in his iconic cardigan, canvas sneakers, and button-down shirt and tie. Remember, this is a look that works well for a certain kind of lesbian too. And, also remember, be nice kids.

What a no-brainer!

The 48th annual NYC Pride will be broadcast live for the first time on New York’s WABC-TV Channel 7. The march, which takes place on New York’s Fifth Avenue, will also be streamed on WABC-TV’s official website.

NYC Pride Managing Director Chris Frederick called the forthcoming broadcast “an unprecedented opportunity” for the LGBTQ community’s “collective voices to be heard.” Other Pride-related events, including the PrideFest street festival and the Pride Luminaries Brunch, will also receive WABC-TV coverage.

“In a time when there continues to be an effort to roll back the rights of LGBTQ individuals, it’s important that we are visible,” he told HuffPost. “As a kid in rural Ohio, if I had the opportunity to turn on the TV and see a sea of rainbows, I might not have felt so afraid. We look forward to everyone tuning into the broadcast and we thank ABC for giving us the opportunity to show the events that helped spark the Pride movement.”

#FirstLook: Recently Out Singer, Leon Else, Just Released “What I Won’t Do (For Love)” Watch

British singer/ songwriter Leon Else posted this a note on Facebook last week effectively coming out as gay. His latest video for the song What I Won’t Do addressed the issue in the lyrics, but he was more forthcoming in the post…

I believe we all struggle with self-acceptance at some point or another. Up until very recently I had spent most of my life living a lie. No one in my life knew the real me, and it came to a point where I don’t think I even knew who that person was.

I was running from my truth because of all the pain and darkness I had experienced…. I was in a state in which I was so ashamed of who I was and didn’t know how to truly live openly.

When I wrote this song, most people just thought it was about an obvious heterosexual scenario because that’s how I portrayed it. But I really wrote it as my own way of saying that everything is not as it seemed;

It’s not a woman I wanted in my bed, but a man.

It was my way of releasing the burden I felt without anyone really knowing my secret.“

As we said before, condragulations, Leon! We love the new song and can’t wait for the EP, What Are We Doing out this summer.

Must Watch: Bianca Del Rio & Rosie O’Donell Roast Nightlife Legend Michael Musto

Monday night, legendary NYC scribe Michael Musto was roasted by a glittering who’s who of comedy and nightlife royalty.

Comedian Bruce Valanche emceed, Rosie O’Donnell spoke (reminding the audience of how their relationship began many years ago when he publicly outed her… much to her eternal annoyance), and then our girl Bianca Del Rio took the stage… From that point on NOBODY was safe – not Rosie, not Michael, not any of the other queens, nor any audience member who failed to laugh at her wicked wit. Watch below.

And via Unicorn Booty, here are some of the night’s other bigt zingers:

Michael Musto to Bianca Del Rio:

“Bianca Del Rio, Hurricane Katrina is only the second worst thing to ever happen to New Orleans.”

Bianca Del Rio to Randy Rainbow:

“I don’t really know who Randy Rainbow is, but from the looks of his name, I guarantee he’s not allowed 800 feet anywhere near a grade school.”

Johnny Skandros to Countess LuAnn:

“You’re the worst thing to happen to music since Whitney Houston started taking baths.”

Bianca Del Rio to Rosie O’Donnell:

“She has her differences with Trump. But she is a lot like Trump. She has five different kids from three different wives. It’s funny, because if Rosie goes ahead and buys another child, she will have to live in a shoe. And with her being a lesbian, can you imagine how fucking ugly that shoe is going to be?”

Johnny Skandros to Michael Musto:

“I have to give you a lot of credit, Musto. You somehow survived the ’80s. It’s like your face was the original PrEP.”

Jinkx Monsoon to Michael Musto:

“With all the fashion sense of a hospital out-patient, Michael Musto looks like Ray Romano if he had a much harder life.”

Marcus Kelle to Bruce Vilanch:

“The last time you got fucked was by genetics.”

Judy Gold to Jinkx Monsoon:

“You look like Kathy Griffin had sex with meth!”

Lucy The Slut to the drag queens:

“Look at these drag queens! They look great, but their makeup is kinda like Febreeze. Pleasant, but it’s main purpose is to cover up shit.”

Michael Musto to Jinkx Monsoon:

“Jinx, you do a brilliant Edie Beale impression, except she happened to be talented, not just mentally ill.”

For Her Latest Role, Tilda Swinton Finds Inspiration in… Ivanka Trump?

In Okja, Netflix’s upcoming film about a young girl bent on exposing an evil corporation, the always-brilliant Tilda Swinton stars as “the heir to a rotten great fortune built on the corrupt and morally repugnant initiatives carried out by her father.” Swinton explains her character “Lucy is not a great actress, has precious little natural charisma and needs to force the shtick to a somewhat painful degree.” As such, “The spotlight is not her natural habitat and the sense of disconnect is palpable.”

Hmmm.

Sounds like another charisma-free, blonde heiress with a startling disconnect we all know and loathe, doesn’t it?

When asked if first daughter/White House advisor Ivanka Trump indeed influenced the role, Swinton replied,

“When we shot in New York last summer, I stood watching the Republican convention on the television in our lunch break dressed as Lucy, watching a different daughter of a different dubious dynasty addressing, from a high podium, a big crowd with glossy blond hair, expensive orthodontics and modeling her Barbie-perfect modest pink dress (concurrently on sale online).”

But does that mean she actually took notes from the current “assistant to the president”? Well, as Swinton herself put it, “Chicken? Egg?”

Although Okja was loudly booed at its Cannes premiere, the trailer looks pretty badass. In addition to Tilda, it stars my fantasy lover Steven Yeun from The Walking Dead (“GLENNNNNNNN!”), Jake Gyllenhaal, Lily Collins, and a lovely CGI hippo/pig hybrid that steals the trailer. It’s also written and directed by the brilliant Bong Joon Ho (of Snowpiercer fame). (And if you have never seen Snowpiercer, MY GOD, would you Netflix it NOW?!). So, yes. This is going in my queue ASAP.

Bombshell Doc Asks –Was Jayne Mansfield’s Gruesome Death 50 Years Ago Caused By Her Affair with a Satanist?

Welcome to Mansfield 66/67, a true story based on rumour and hearsay, where classic documentary interviews and archival materials are blended with experimental dance numbers, performance art and animation, elevating a tabloid tale of a fallen Hollywood idol into a celebration of the mythical proportions of a true original.

And Gunpowder & Sky have just acquired U.S. film rights for it!. The film is about the last two years of movie goddess Jayne Mansfield’s life and the speculation swirling around her untimely death being caused by a curse after her alleged romantic dalliance with Anton LaVey, head of the Church of Satan.

Her affair with LaVey, the handsome devil that started his “church” with a publicist and preached a “live and let live lifestyle”. Anton said,

If you’re going to be a sinner, be the best sinner on the block.

And that was Jayne. But, her then-boyfriend lawyer Sam Brody was sent into a jealous rage and desecrated sacred Satanic talismans in Anton’s lair, prompting a curse to be put on his head that he would die in a car accident within a year. In 1966 and 1967, Jayne and Sam proceeded to have seven fender benders and near-fatal smash-ups until the one that tragically took both of their lives in a bizarre crash where reporters said alternately Jayne was either beheaded on impact or wig-scalped (depending on who is telling it.)

I asked Mansfield filmmakers and friends of Wow, P. David Ebersole and Todd Hughes (Hit So Hard, Room 237, Dear Mom Love Cher) why this Jayne story now…

First off, we just adore Jayne Mansfield. On the 50th anniversary of her death she has never seemed more relevant. As perhaps the first reality star, and although their hunger for publicity basically looks the same on paper, her intelligence and values are such a sharp contrast to the likes of the Kardashians or Paris Hilton.

Combine that with the message she was getting from Anton LaVey, who was essentially a new age live and let live guru in wolf’s clothing, and it seems such a good time to be talking about Jayne being sex-positive, anti-shame, and, most importantly, talented and funny!

Plus, she was an anti-Vietnam activist! Who knew? And anyway, who doesn’t love a mystery about a sex goddess and a satanic curse!“

Who doesn’t indeed! I’m in! WOWlebrity and superstar in her own right, Ann Magnuson is the voice of Jayne and Anton LaVey is voiced by Richard Arquette –yes, brother of THOSE Arquettes.

And you can be a part of it too and get some fab swag in the process, funding is not completed yet and their IndieGoGo is go-go-going on right now. Click here to get on the team for as little as $25. And if you’re a Mansfield freak too, you can even get an executive producer credit, if you’ve got a spare $10K. In the meantime…

Watch.

Gas Station Nachos Leave One Man Dead, One Woman Paralyzed, and Eight Others Seriously Ill

At least 10 people have been stricken by a tainted batch of nacho cheese from a California gas station, including one man who died, and another woman who has been left paralyzed.

Martin Galindo, a 37-year-old father of two, contracted botulism from the cheese, fell into a coma, and was left breathing through a ventilator. On Thursday of last week, he was taken off of life support and died.

33-year-old Lavinia Kelly drizzled the deadly cheese on her Doritos during a stop at Valley Oak Food and Fuel in Walnut Grove, about 30 miles south of Sacramento. Within hours, she fell sick and ended in a hospital, unable to move her eyes.

From USA Today:

Food-borne botulism is an uncommon but serious paralytic illness, the department noted, stemming from an odorless and colorless toxin found in foods not properly processed or stored. Most associate it with food canned at home, not sold in a store, and significant doses can lead to death. It’s treated with an antitoxin, typically in intensive care units.

Kelly found herself in such a unit, according to The Bee, using tape to hold open her paralyzed eyelids. She’s suing the gas station over the ordeal, which her partner said has left them bewildered.

“She’s been doing good, and we just don’t understand why this happened over a bag of chips and nacho cheese,” Ricky Torres told the newspaper last week. “Really? How does that happen?”

To repeat: She has to TAPE HER EYES OPEN.

Wow.

Valley Oak and Food temporarily lost its food and drink permit earlier this month, The Sacramento Bee reports. The store selling the tainted cheese pulled the product on May 5, according to health officials, who believe there’s no further public risk.

Still, perhaps you’d better step away from gas station nachos.

Fabulous images of (mostly) pre-fame drag faves from artist/photographer Jeremy Kostcollected in his new book Like One of Your French Girls.

Captured largely between 2009 and 2012, the painted Polaroids feature friends and collaborators who have since gone on to incredible success with the luminous rise of RuPaul’s DragRace. Sharon Needles, Alaska Thunderfuck, Detox Icunt, Raja Gemini, Trixie Mattel, Violet Chacki, and Willam Belli are just a few of the subjects featured in the book and now relative household names.

“Like One of Your French Girls” is a fine art, mixed media photographic series lensing the world’s most renowned Drag Queens. The photographer, Jeremy Kost, known for extensive his polaroid pieces returns to his roots – albeit in a lace front wig – to debut “Like One of Your French Girls.” The book features Mr. Kost’s original work where he lensed the world’s most famous drag queens in glamorous, surreal, and most shocking, daytime vignettes. Far too long have drag queens been relegated to creatures of the night; however, the inspiration came to the artist at night. Well after midnight. The book features many well-known subjects – Amanda Lepore, Sharon Needles, Willam, Alaska, Violet Chacki, in haute couture, as never seen before.

“Like One of Your French Girls” will launch Thursday, May 25th in the US and May 31st in the UK.

Check out these exclusive images Trixie, above, and Raja, Violet, Sharon and Amanda, below.

And pre-order your copy of the book here.

A note from the artist:

A Junior Vasquez live recording from Twilo goes on. A stack of Polaroids is sifted through. The memories come rushing back. Inspiration strikes. With a relatively quick gesture, a Polaroid is painted. The images on these pages are all from my archives—2009 to 2012, to be precise (all painted in 2016). Perhaps they were a secondary portrait from a collage, or a single Polaroid made for posterity of unbelievable private performances evoked, in public, with these extraordinary queens.

Giants in their own right, captured before RuPaul’s Drag Race became an insane phenomenon, these characters are my everything. We made this work for the sake of art. We didn’t make it for likes or followers but for timeless images that showcase these queens in their glamour, charisma, and talent.

The first of this series began by chance and through frustration. I had taken a painting on canvas a few steps too far, effectively “knifing” the piece, and in a childish fit, I slapped the painting with a Polaroid that had been sitting on my desk. The result was intriguing.

A serendipitous visit from the artist Richard Hawkins, whom I greatly admire, coincided with the return of a group of drag queen Polaroids from my first show in Washington, D.C. His suggestion to use oil paint from a tube to “get better mud” happened to make a lot of sense with these images.

I felt the daubs of swirling pigment brought the work to a different level. The relationship between makeup and color and costume, the masking, the layering, the covering up—it all worked together.

I knew I wanted to get this work out into the world as soon as possible. Taking those precious images and revisiting them with this new approach made them feel all the more impactful to me. This process also added a new sense of permanence to this very ephemeral medium, the Polaroid. Once the paint was slapped down, there was no turning back. This seemed like a poignant contrast.

In the series seen here, there’s a tension between the photograph and the paint. Which is more important? We have been trained to place painting on a pedestal, but I believe that no matter the medium, in art it is ultimately an expression and understanding of character that we seek.

May 25th: It’s YOUR Birthday, Bitch!

#BornThisDay: Sir Ian McKellen

$

May 25, 1939Sir Ian McKellen:

“I remember losing only one job because of my coming out of the closet. I was supposed to play one of the lead roles in Harold Pinter‘s Betrayal which eventually were given to Ben Kingsley and Jeremy Irons. The producer Sam Spiegel dropped a sexist comment about wives during a meeting and when I replied I was fortunate to be gay, I was quickly shown the door.”

We both belong to the Screen Actors Guild and we both became passionate about the theatre after seeing a stage production of Peter Pan. We both started acting as a child, did university theatre, moved on to regional theatre and came to work in films and television later in life… and we are both big old queers who thought working in the theatre was a good place to meet guys. The similarities end there. McKellen is the greatest actor of the last 50 years and I am just a dilettante. He is one of the people that I admire the most in this wicked world and he continues to inspire me.

McKellen became an actor to meet men. He admits that he felt isolated when he was younger, but thought he would meet other gay people if he embarked on a stage career:

“I’d heard that a lot of professional actors were gay. Acting seemed like a chance for me to meet like-minded people. You know, at that time same-sex love in Britain got you into prison. Homosexuality was being completely hushed up. Gay teachers, politicians or firemen – that was something unthinkable. When I was young I thought I was the only gay Brit. That’s why I was glad to find people like me in the actors’ guild.”

Early in his career he was spotted by Dame Maggie Smith. She recommended McKellen to Laurence Olivier, who was then building his new National Theatre at the Old Vic. His first production at the National was Franco Zeffirelli‘s 1965 production of William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, with Maggie Smith, Robert Stephens, Albert Finney, Derrick Jacobi and newcomer Michael York.

Romeo And Juliet (1976)

McKellen worked his way up through the ranks in regional repertory theatre and tours of the classics. At the Edinburgh Festival in 1969, he performed both the title roles in Richard II and Edward II (that’s a lot of IIs) and Romeo And Juliet; he blew away audiences and critics alike, and probably did some blowing on his own. McKellen:

“I remember one heady evening in my dressing room at the Piccadilly, when I introduced Noel Coward to Rudolf Nureyev. I thought, I suppose I’ve arrived.”

McKellen was persuaded to join the Royal Shakespeare Company by artistic director, Trevor Nunn. He showed true range by playing both Doctor Faustus and Romeo in the same season. His Macbeth in 1976, with Dame Judi Dench as his Lady M, is probably the greatest of all time. The company took Anton Chekhov’s The Three Sisters and Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night on tour in the late 1970s, traveling to 26 towns in the UK, before touring the USA. McKellen claims that he loves to take theatre to the people: “It is truly the most enjoyable thing I have ever done.”

On Broadway in 1980, McKellen played Antonio Salieri in Peter Schaffer’s Amadeus, the role for which F. Murray Abraham would later win an Academy Award. McKellen was consoled with the Tony Award. Also on Broadway, he played Richard III as a wicked plotter creating a fascist state in future England. He brilliantly recreated that role on film in 1995.

Never really in the closet to the theatre community, in 1988, McKellen admitted he was gay while discussing Section 28, the lovely Margaret Thatcher’s evil legislation that would have made the “public promotion of homosexuality” a crime. He became one of the foremost campaigners for Gay Rights in Britain, co-founding The Stonewall Group. Fellow actor John Gielgud was also a contributor, but only in secret.

ian gay

McKellen originated the role of Max in Martin Sherman’s Bent (1979), about the suffering of homosexuals under the Nazis. The film version in 1997 featured Clive Owen as Max, but with McKellen in the role of Uncle Freddie and with Mick Jagger appearing in drag. In 1993, he appeared on television in PBS’s Tales Of The City (1992) and in And The Band Played On (1993) about the discovery of and early fight against HIV. As activist Bill Kraus, McKellen stood out in a cast that included Richard Gere, Anjelica Huston, and Steve Martin, receiving an Emmy nomination (his first of six).

Even as a full-blown film star, McKellen continues to return to ensemble theatre appearing in productions of The Seagull, The Tempest and Noel Coward’s Present Laughter.

Forgive me, but I have never seen an X-Men film, despite my love for McKellen and Hugh Jackman. I have an aversion to anything with wizards or dragons, so I skipped those Hobbit flicks. I hope they made McKellen wheelbarrows of money. But, McKellen is responsible for two of my favorite performances of all time in a pair of my very favorite films: hilarious and outrageous in Cold Comfort Farm (1995), and pretty, witty, and gay in his Oscar nominated turn as gay director James Whale in Gods And Monsters (1998).

In the 2013-2014 Broadway season, McKellen and his pal Sir Patrick Stewart performed in a repertory presentation of Harold Pinter’s No Man’s Land and Samuel Beckett’s Waiting For Godot, quite the acting hat trick.

For the past few years, I thought his turn opposite openly gay Derek Jacobi, his classmate at Cambridge in the 1950s, in the British sitcom Vicious was rather delicious fun. The two friends play a pair of bitter, hilarious old queens in a long longtime relationship.

He is BFFs with writer Armistead Maupin, meeting during the filming of Tales Of The City. McKellen was the best man at Patrick Stewart’s wedding in 2014.

“I have been reluctant to lobby on other issues I most care about- nuclear weapons (against), religion (atheist), capital punishment (anti), AIDS (fund-raiser) because I never want to be forever spouting, diluting the impact of addressing my most urgent concern; legal and social equality for Gay people worldwide.”

Last year, McKellen starred opposite Anthony Hopkins in a filmed version on Ronald Harwood‘s play The Dresser directed by Richard Eyre. It is available on Starz.

I can’t think of a living person that I admire more. Six Olivier Awards, a Tony Award, a Golden Globe, a SAG Award, four Drama Desk Awards, and two Academy Award nominations, McKellen is one of the greatest actors of all time and a relentless activist for equal rights.

McKellen is currently the voice of Cogsworth, Beast’s loyal majordomo, who was cursed into a pendulum clock, in Disney live-action adaptation of Beauty And The Beast.

He is not a fan of the American President:

President Breaking Wind has impacted us all. Some like him, think they can identify with him, believe him because they’ve seen him on television perhaps and think the billionaire and his billionaire team are truly friends. The rest of us, including the majority of voters in USA, see through the charade: after all, the schtick is not exactly subtle. But he’s riled us, got under our skin, making us angry and despairing that he should have got through to the final of his show and turned democracy into a tv/twitter spectacular.”

He remains happily single as he turns 78-years-old today.

Brokeback Mountain Opera to Make Its US Debut (and I’m Already Sobbing)

Finally, an excuse to wear one of the many opera capes clogging up your closet! Wearing them to the grocery story and DMV is fine and all, but, oh, to actually put them to their actual use!

Yes, Brokeback the OPERA is coming! The already very successful operatic adaptation of Ang Lee’s Brokeback Mountain will make its US premiere at Lincoln Center in 2018.

The show, created by composer Charles Wuorinen and author Annie Proulx, who penned the original “Brokeback” short story and contributed the new show’s libretto, had a successful run in Madrid in 2014.

“It’s a story of doomed love, in this case a complex homosexual relationship taking place in a very homophobic society,” says Wuorinen, who is openly gay.

Says NewNowNext:

The stage version is grittier than the film, with tighter characterizations and the addition of a ghost and a chorus. “Wuorinen’s score evokes the mountains with its swells and strains, bringing to life the harshly imposing Wyoming landscape from which the story was born,” wrote Broadway World.

NYCO originally commissioned the work, but when the company declared bankruptcy in 2013, the company’s director, Gerard Mortier, took it to Madrid’s Teatro Real.

The Lincoln Center’s Brokeback will be conducted by Kazem Abdulla, though principal performers have yet to be announced.

Grindr Was Just Bought Out By a Chinese Gaming Company – What Does That Mean For Your Future Hookups?

Gay hookup app Grindr has been completely bought up by a Chinese gaming company, and what that means for you and your Friday night sexy time remains up in the air.

According to Instinct:

Back in January 2016, Beijing Kunlun Tech bought 61.5% of Grindr’s stakes for $93 million, which bumped up the business’s value to $155 million. Then, in an announcement yesterday, they said that they would be buying the the rest of the the stakes for $152 million.

Beijing Kunlun Tech is run by billionaire Zhou Yahui, and is one of China’s largest game developers. The purchase is a strategic strategy to allow the company to advertise and market itself to the more than 3 million daily users who are on the app from all over the globe.

Hmmm. Using the hookup site as a way to advertise Chinese video games seems…. an odd fit.

Also, as Instinct points out, the Chinese government seems very fickle when it comes to its treatment of LGBT citizens

One second it’ll have a “live and let live” attitude towards LGBT people on the internet, and the next it’ll ban gay web series and shut down gay-centric websites.

So, although Grindr inventor Joel Simkhai said at the time of the first Kunlun Tech investment, that it would be “business as usual” … that seems unlikely.

But time will tell.

Tituss Burgess Was Obviously BORN to Play Ursula the Sea Witch – Watch Him SLAY “Poor Unfortunate Souls”

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt breakout star Tituss Burgess BLOWS AWAY an audience at New York Magazine’s Vulture Festival with his show-stopping rendition of the Little Mermaid classic “Poor Unfortunate Souls.”

Before Kimmy, Burgess actually appeared on Broadway in the show, playing Sebastian the crab, but says he felt the role never really suited him.

“While I was playing Sebastian, I was like, ‘I’m playing the wrong role. I went to the producers when I was getting ready to leave the show to see if they would let me audition for this other role that I should have been playing. And they said no.”

That role was Ursula the Sea Witch, of course. And it would have made TOTAL sense for him to play it (as you shall see below). The role, after all, was actually inspired by the drag queen Divine.

Maybe after producers see this, he’ll be cast in the role for ABC’s “The Little Mermaid” live musical, which will air this fall. *Fingers Crossed*

Drug Smuggling Pigeon Caught with 178 Ecstasy Pills in Tiny Backpack

Authorities in Kuwait caught a pigeon trying to smuggle 178 ecstasy pills across the border from Iraq in a teeny-tiny backpack – possibly on its way to a bird rave in the desert. The very bad bird was already being tracked by the authorities when it flew right above the customs building in Kuwait where he was somehow caught and the drugs were confiscated. Apparently, using carrier pigeons as a way to smuggle drugs like cocaine and ecstasy across borders is being used more and more lately due to their ability to fly around 150km without stopping and being able to carry roughly 10 percent of their body weight.

Now, as a side note, some sources are saying the pills were ecstasy while others reporting they were ketamine. Which begs the question: THERE ARE KETAMINE PILLS?
