This isn’t the first time they’ve done it! They predicted the iPhone. The writers of the The Simpsons predicted the ebola virus. They even predicted that Trump would become president back in 2000, and even got the electoral map correct! Now, it seems they really are psychic or maybe Lady Gaga is trolling us???

February 7th: It’s YOUR Birthday, Bitch!

#BornThisDay: Swimmer, Mark Tewksbury

$

February 7, 1968Mark Tewksbury:

“Keeping up the image of Canada’s boy next door, while feeling a lot like the girl next door wasn’t very easy.”

Johnny Weissmuller, Ian Thorpe, Matt Biondi, Michael Phelps (the most decorated Olympian of all time, with a total of 28 medals) and of course, Mark Spitz… I am zany for Olympic swimmers! In 2013, lovely, lithe diver Tom Daley beat the tabloids at their own game: He came out of the closet entirely on his own terms. Not that unusual in the 21st century, but still a rarity in sports. On his own YouTube channel, Daley announced he had something to say: He had fallen in love, and it just so happened to be with a guy. I like the new matter-of-fact method of opening the closet door. When Mark Tewksbury won Olympic gold in 1992, there were no gay characters on television and talking about his sexuality was considered taboo. There were nearly no positive gay role models in sports.

Olympic medalist Tewksbury was closeted throughout his competitive swimming career, but since coming out of the closet, he has become a strong advocate for LGBTQ rights. Going into 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Tewksbury was ranked fourth in the world, and most experts picked him as one of the powerful swimmers with a chance to win the gold medal. Tewksbury’s winning gold was Canada’s first at the Barcelona games and the first Canadian gold medal in swimming since the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, which Russia had boycotted. Tewksbury also won a bronze medal in the relay event in Barcelona. He made the cover of Time Magazine. He was inducted into the Canadian Olympic Hall Of Fame, the Canadian Sports Hall Of Fame, and the International Swimming Hall Of Fame, plus he was named 1992’s Canada’s Male Athlete Of The Year.

In December 1998, Tewksbury finally told the world that he was gay. He was the first Canadian athlete to voluntarily be open about his gayness and his announcement drew a lot of public attention. He almost immediately lost a very lucrative contract as a motivational speaker because he was “too openly gay.”

Like most athletes that happen to be gay, Tewksbury competed for years while in the closet, winning medals and making money doing endorsements.  Tewksbury:

“The only gay swimmer I knew of was Greg Louganis and he was spoken of terribly behind the scenes because of his sexuality. So, in that regard, it pushed me further back into the closet.”

In 2006, Tewksbury published a book, Inside Out: Straight Talk From A Gay Jock, where he writes about the terrible infighting among organizers of the Olympic Games, as well as the International Gay Games,  and the newly formed Out Games. He resigned from the International Olympic Committee over the lack of accountability, accusing them of rampant corruption. He was also part of a group of former Olympic athletes who pushed for the resignation of IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch.

Only months after the scandal surrounding the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympic Games broke, Tewksbury became known as an outspoken critic of the IOC and he demanded reforms to the system. Part of what Tewksbury stood for was integrity in sports, and he “had a complete crisis of faith in the leadership of amateur sport”, including the IOC. With 80 other jocks from around the globe, he founded Olympic Athletes Together Honorably (OATH), a group dedicated to reforming the IOC to eliminate cronyism and lack of real accountability.

Tewksbury:

“I gazed around the room slowly. The best swimmers from Russia, Cuba, the United States, Spain, Germany and France were in front of me. And I was different. I was the fag. And in that moment, I owned my truth completely. I thought: ‘If these guys knew how hard it was for me to get here, they wouldn’t believe it. They have no bloody clue what I have been through. Or how strong I am’.”

Tewksbury is very candid about embarrassing, humorous and unflattering things about his personal life, including his involvement in a serious three-way relationship with a gay couple and his persistent pursuit of a certain professional male escort.

In December 2008, Tewksbury was invited by the government of France to speak at the United Nations in NYC on the day that a declaration was introduced that affirms International Gay Rights and seeking to decriminalize homosexuality around the globe. Tewksbury remains a spokesman for The International Day of Sport For Development And Peace which highlights the role sports can play in achieving sustainable progress and change. This year’s celebration is Thursday, April 6th.

“Sport is also an important enabler of sustainable development. We recognize the growing contribution of sport to the realization of development and peace in its promotion of tolerance and respect and the contributions it makes to the empowerment of women and of young people, individuals and communities as well as to health, education and social inclusion objectives.”

In 2009, Tewksbury was inducted into Canada’s LGBT Human Rights Hall Of Fame in honor of his outstanding achievements and his efforts to end discrimination in the world of sports. He was named the Chef de Mission (a sort of team manager) of the 2012 Canadian Summer Olympic team.

Tewksbury presented his Olympic gold medal to the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg for a 2015 exhibit promoting the power of sport to influence positive change, and he served as Master of Ceremonies for three of the Dalai Lama’s Canadian visits.

Tewksbury lives in Ottawa with his longtime partner Benjamin Kiss, a former Swiss figure skater and now working as an actor.

Pretty darn cool.

#LGBTQ: 3 Men Found Dead in Berlin Bathhouse Fire

Three men have been confirmed dead after a fire broke out in a Berlin sauna. Firemen were called to Steam Works late Sunday to find around 25 people on the street, some dressed only in towels and robes.

Nearly all were treated at the scene, although one had to be taken to hospital and is believed to be in stable condition.

It’s still unclear how the fire started, but it was reported that firefighters had to cut through a steel gate to access the site. Steam Works occupied both the basement and ground floor of a seven-storey building, and firemen described it “immensely difficult”, to access everyone due to the maze of small spaces in the club. The sauna’s individual cubicles was where the three men were found.

No autopsy yet but it’s believed the men all died from smoke asphyxiation and fire investigators are still investing as to the cause of the fire.

Filmmaker Fenton Bailey on Steve Bannon’s Doc. “Generation Zero” & 5 Reasons He Hates America

Filmmaker and World of Wonder co-founder, Fenton Bailey, has made dozens of documentary films (along with Wow’s Randy Barbato) and viewed hundreds if not thousands more at film festivals around the world. He recently watched an eye-opening doc made by Steve Bannon, whose official tile is “Assistant to the President and Chief Strategist.” Bailey says,

“For an insight into the person really running this presidency watch Generation Zero the documentary written and directed by Stephen Bannon. Based on this and reading interviews with him elsewhere clear and terrifying themes emerge,

1. Born in 1953, this is a man who grew up alienated from and enraged by the 60s revolution, as if the summer of love plunged him into a permanent nuclear winter.

2. He focuses his resentment on the so-called elite, a single-minded hydra-headed entity that combines Wall Street, corporations, politicians, mainstream media and anyone who disagrees with him.

3. He wants revenge and has an undisguised lust for blood.

4. He endorses a cyclical theory of American history with revolutions and social upheaval every 80 to 100 years and favors sinister mystical jargon like ‘fourth turnings’ (guess what – we are overdue for one…)

5. Should events fail to bring about the periodic chaos, a leader will emerge who will unleash it.

Now take all that and consider the events of the last couple of weeks: It’s not about the Muslim ban, letting the mentally ill buy guns, or any one thing per se. It’s about breaking all the rules, causing conflict, creating chaos, to firestart the apocalypse that will vindicate and avenge him. As in House Of Cards ‘We don’t submit to terror. We make the terror’. In Stephen Bannon’s hands we are hostage to an angry white man, a madman who is the ultimate terrorist. His finger is on the button and he will do everything to press it.

I should add that the wall-to-wall melodramatic orchestral kitsch score makes the film almost unwatchable, but that’s what it’s like inside the mind of crazy…”

Kevin Sessums Says the Red Cross Ball at Mar-a-Lago Was “Ostentatious” &“Outrageously Tacky” (Like Trump)

Writer Kevin Sessums is a friend of Wow’s (and mine) and has a VERY active audience on Facebook. Yesterday, he posted the photo above with the following text and thought I’d share it with you. As the cliché goes, a picture is worth a thousand words. In this instance the “worth” is Palm Beach’s Worth Avenue –and as for words, he says it all in 133. As one snarky commenter posted, “At least they let those two drag queens in the front attend…”

The theme -without irony- was ‘From Vienna to Versailles’ at the Red Cross Ball held at the ostentatiously, outrageously tacky Mar-A-Lago in Palm Beach where Trump – our ostentatious, outrageously tacky leader of America’s Fascist Order which occupies Washington at the moment – lorded himself over the high-paying lowlifes that were his guests. Here are a few of them entering the ballroom. They can’t even do ‘Versailles’ well, these tawdry Marie Antoinots. You couldn’t make this shit up even if you tried. This really is turning into America’s reality show version of Louis XVI‘s reign. And check out that cheesy little lonely gold settee sitting over to the side as if bearing witness to it all. Even that little settee seems to see it all for what it is: a gaudy godawful moment in our country’s history.Kevin Sessums

From the Washington Post report of the evening:

“Bewigged servers and entertainers wore gowns and get-ups that looked like castoffs from Marie Antoinette and Co.’s closets, per social media evidence and a spy or two in the room (the annual fundraiser, a highlight of the town’s social calendar, was oddly closed to the media this year).

“Crystal candelabras, opulent palm tree centerpieces and gold-toned place settings contributed to the welcome-to-my-chateau vibe.

“The Trumps took it all in from the head table, where the president sat with his wife on one side and commerce secretary nominee (and Palm Beach denizen) Wilbur Ross on the other. In remarks before taking a spin on the dance floor, Trump praised both the Red Cross and ball co-chair J.J. Cafaro, a mall developer convicted in 2002 of bribing former congressman Jim Traficant and in 2010 for not disclosing donations to his daughter’s failed congressional campaign.

“According to one attendee, Trump stayed for hours and seemed to be reveling in the glow of acceptance of a Palm Beach crowd that had once viewed the nouveau riche developer with skepticism. Standing at a dais festooned with the presidential seal, with a glittering gold curtain behind him, Trump looked proud of the trappings of the presidency as he surveyed a room fit for a king (the Donald J. Trump ballroom, after all, was constructed to look like Versailles Hall of Mirrors).

“And true to form, he saved his highest praise for, well, himself.

‘I don’t think I’ve ever seen the room looking more beautiful — perhaps at our wedding — right, Melania?’ he said. ‘We’re very proud of Mar-a-Lago and all the money we’ve raised in this room and in this wonderful house.'”

Barf.

Madonna Set To Adopt Twin Girls, Esther & Stella, From Malawi

Madonna posted this pic on Instagram with the caption, “Baddest Chick on the Alps!! Mercy James”

London’s Mirror and other news sources are reporting that Madonna has been given permission to adopt twin girls from Malawi. She was granted an adoption order for twins Esther and Stella, four, by the Malawi High Court, and is free to take them home.

The court proceedings took place in Judge Fiona Mwale’s chambers with no media allowed. She appeared for adoption of the twins on January 25 – but denied the claims. She said,

I am in Malawi to check on the children’s hospital in Blantyre and my other work with Raising Malawi and then heading home. The rumors of an adoption process are untrue.

But Mlenga Mvula, a spokesman for the Lilongwe High Court, claims the singer applied in person,

The court is looking at the application now to determine whether Madonna can adopt these two children.

Madge recently told Billboard,

I’ve been working in Malawi for over a decade. I have a huge commitment and love for the country and I will never desert them. I adopted my two children that I’m so lucky to have living in my house right now.

In October 2006, Madonna adopted David Bana while visiting the country doing charity work. She returned last year so David could receive his tribal name. She is also mother to Lourdes, 19, her daughter with ex Carlos Leon, son Rocco, 15, from her marriage to Guy Ritchie, and Mercy, 11 who she adopted.

Mom, Mercy and David recently saw the Oscar-nominated documentary, I Am Not Your Negro together, and posted the pic below.

#Personal: Reflections from National Geographic’s “Gender Revolution”

$

Last night was the world premiere of National Geographic and World Of Wonder‘s Gender Revolution: A Journey with Katie Couric. As a women and gender studies minor in college, I foolishly believed that I knew everything that I needed to know about the trans community and would watch Gender Revolution as superior in the featured topics. Astonishingly, this documentary taught me a little more about myself and the ordeals the trans population must endure.

I will be honest and state that I have not been as comfortable with gender and it’s variants as I am now. When I began discovering my sexuality, my socialization from pop culture and media created stark views of gender roles in WLW relationships. I thought that there had to be the more aggressive, wears the pants, masculine woman, and the dainty flower, wears make-up with long haired woman in a lesbian partnership. In my past relationships, I would transform my gender presentation to reflect what society was telling me was right or wrong.

When it came to friends coming out as Trans I see now, that I was not as genuinely supportive in the beginning. When one of my best friends told me they were getting a mastectomy to affirm their gender presentation, I verbally backed them up through gritted teeth. I had a bit of lesbian-transphobia in me, and for awhile, could not accept that my friends, who were now distinguishing themselves as men could suddenly gain male privilege just from their outside appearance. I ended up being resentful of them; who had been sexually harassed daily by my side as a teenager, and their abrupt (for what I believed) alleviation from that terror.

Gender Revolution helped me comprehend how much privilege I have as a cis-person. Ally Hudson, the 12 year old trans girl in the trans youth program really struck a cord with me. In her story her mother discusses Ally’s suicidal thoughts at the age of SEVEN, and the how untrue she felt in her male body as a child. Her account gave me the necessary clarity that I needed to see that, being trans is a valid way of life and that when people declare they’re Trans they mean it.

My experience of gender is different from others, and I’m still trying to de-colonize my mind from the vigorous gender roles that society forced upon me. A trans youth mentioned in the doc that when it comes to topics like this, that we all must practice “radical patience”, which is something I need to implore when learning about new things, as well as with myself.

Thank you everyone at National Geographic, Katie Couric Media, and World of Wonder for a beautiful peak into an important existence in our lives.

Do-It-Yourself Crime Scene Investigators, Buy this Two-Ounce Spray Bottle of Luminol!

Have you recently experienced – or suspect there has been – a “bloodletting event” in your home? Lucky for you, Pioneer Forensics is now selling a 2 oz. bottle of Luminol, which contains the exact formula used worldwide by Crime Scene Investigators, to help you get to the bottom of whatever is going on in your home.

From Dude I Want That:

The way you get its blue chemiluminescence to show is simple. 1) Bleed all over something. 2) Clean it up. 3) Spray Luminol on the “cleaned” bloodied areas, and watch its latent evidence appear.

For best results, Luminol should be mixed and sprayed to suspected surfaces immediately prior to use, and applied in complete darkness. It has been proven to detect evidence of blood presence over 36 months old.

Some reasons the average non-aspiring forensic investigator might want a bottle of Luminol include…um…it’s for sale on Amazon. I would also get some to spray all over any used car or item of clothing I was ever considering purchasing.

Get your bottle here. Just $12!

Loved the Amazon comments, which include a lengthy story about a man who kept spitting up blood, but no one would believe him… and the man who commented “I’ve used it. it works and I found out who was doing stuff in my tool shed.” Um, wtf, dude?

Florida Drug Bust Uncovers “Donald Trump”-Brand Heroin Packages

$

The Washington Post reporter covering this story seems unaware that drug dealers often name their heroin “brands” with pop culture references – I remember in the ’90s there was, famously, Bart Simpson heroin, Super Mario heroin, New Jack City heroin, “Just Say No” heroin, and for a brief period (I’m not making this up) Michael Alig heroin.

In an article entitled “Florida heroin bust reveals something bizarre: Drugs covered in Donald Trump’s face“:

Florida law enforcement officials announced this week that there’s a new name for the deadly drug: “Donald Trump.”

After a six-month investigation into local drug dealing, the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office last month confiscated 5,500 heroin packages, some of which included an image of the president’s face and name, according to NBC affiliate WFLA.

Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, addressing the media at the Hernando County Emergency Operations Center on Friday, was not amused, according to the Tampa Bay Times.

“All I want to say to this drug dealer is, ‘Big mistake by putting the president’s picture on this,’ ” said Bondi. “Big mistake. Because he is going to be our most fierce advocate in taking this junk off of our streets. Can you believe this? Big mistake.”

She added: “I’m going to make sure [Trump] gets one of these packages when the case is all over to put in the Oval Office to remind him of all the good he’s doing.”

There is every reason to believe she will, too.

Bondi is, of course, rather chummy with the President, after he bought her off with an illegal campaign contribution that stopped her from investigating fraud allegations against Trump University.

Anywhoozit…

The heroin bust — the largest in county history, according to Sheriff Al Nienhuis — also turned up heroin-filled envelopes named after Colombian cocaine kingpin Pablo Escobar. Some bore the name of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, the notorious Mexican drug kingpin. Most of the drugs were seized Jan. 27, the Times reported, but authorities didn’t know why they were labeled with different faces.

Was it a political message? A joke?

Nobody can be sure.

Well, I can. It’s just business as usual, and drug use 101.

Here are a few examples of heroin brands:

Dolores Umbridge Confirmed As Education Secretary

Dear Muggles,

We are unpleased to inform you that today the Ministry of Magic has fallen confirmed Dolores Umbridge as Lord Volde – rem – President Trump’s education secretary, 51-50. Vice President Bellatrix Lestrange – I mean – Pence cast an imperious curse-inducing (not to mention unprecedented) tie-breaking spell/vote, after hearings that became fodder for Saturday Night Live; after angry constituents swamped Senate offices with 1.5 million calls a day; after two Republican senators defected; and Dumbledore’s Army held the floor overnight in protest.

The 59-year-old personal bear attacker and real life toad-from-Hell takes over the leadership and management of a federal bureaucracy with 4,400 employees and a $68 billion annual budget.

Sigh.

In the words of Cornelius Fudge, “These are dark times, there is no denying. Our world has perhaps faced no greater threat than it has since January 20th.”

J.K.Rowling save us all.

Yours,

Minerva McGonagall

Ps. Let’s hope Devos ends up like Umbridge did with the centaurs:

“Shade” Added To Merriam-Webster Dictionary Today

$

0

THIS is revolutionary: “Shade” has been officially added to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, confirmed today by the source itself on Twitter earlier today. Obvious kudos go to Paris Is Burning, but we’d like to think that RuPaul’s Drag Race played a big role in the scholarly efforts of educating the kids, amirite?!

Check it out:

On their official Twitter, Merriam-Webster let the kids HAVE it:

From their website:

You don’t have to watch RuPaul’s Drag Race to have heard the expression throw shade, or sometimes just shade.

Shade is a subtle, sneering expression of contempt for or disgust with someone—sometimes verbal, and sometimes not. It appears in the phrase to throw shade, as in “The Sunday Stylers are the last people I’d expect to throw shade on President Bill’s hair pursuits” (New York Times, 4 July 1993).

shade

The expression ‘throw shade’ has been around for a while, but it exploded in popularity after recaps of a 2010 episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race used the phrase to describe a competition of epic takedowns.

Our first recorded use of shade to refer to an insult is from the 1990 documentary Paris is Burning, which chronicles the drag scene in mid-1980s Manhattan as seen through the eyes of young Latino and black drag queens. One queen named Dorian Corey explains the development of the read, which is a direct insult, and shade:

… when you are all of the same thing, then you have to go to the fine point. In other words, if I’m a black queen and you’re a black queen, we can’t call each other ‘black queens’ because we’re both black queens. That’s not a read—that’s just a fact. So then we talk about your ridiculous shape, your saggy face, your tacky clothes. Then reading became a developed form, where it became shade. Shade is, I don’t tell you you’re ugly, but I don’t have to tell you, because you know you’re ugly. And that’s shade.

According to E. Patrick Johnson, a professor of African-American studies at Northwestern University who has written on insults within the gay and black communities, shade is something that has been a part of the American black experience since slavery, when a direct insult could result in death. “African-Americans developed these covert ways of communication, which, over time, have morphed into the traditional ways that they interact with one another.”

Thanks in part to Paris Is Burningshade began to enter the mainstream in the early 1990s, first appearing in places like the New York Times, the Boston Globe, and the Los Angeles Times. It even appeared in a jokey headline about an eclipse: “Uppity Earth Throws Shade” (Newsday, 28 November 1993).

The expression gained slow momentum until 2010, when during an episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race, the hostess RuPaul declared “You will read your fellow queens!” What ensued was a competition of epic takedowns, and though the contestants were reading, most of the write-ups afterwards called it throwing shade.

Shade’s popularity has only grown since, showing up in a host of Internet memes, including one featuring the First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama, rolling her eyes at then-Speaker of the House, John Boehner, at a post-inaugural luncheon in 2013.
