Adele-sings-Hello-on-SNL-Saturday-Night-Live-VIDEO

Adele week finished off nicely, after her Tuesday concert at Radio City (to be aired in a special Adele Live In New York City on Dec. 14) her Adele impersonation for the BBC and last night as musical guest on SNL. Matthew McConaughey was the host and is at the table where the only thing that can keep the family (Beck Bennett, Jay Pharoah, Cecily Strong, Aidy Bryant, Kate McKinnon, Vanessa Bayer) from fighting on Thanksgiving is Adele’s Hello. Hilarious. She also performed Hello for her first number, and later the fantastic new When We Were Young. She is just perfection. Watch.

June Carter Cash was a recurring guest on Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman back in the day, and on one Thanksgiving episode Johnny Cash appeared as her husband who didn’t want June to know he was dying, so he sings the beautiful song to her and…

Oh hell, just watch. The devotion between Johnny and June is apparent as he sings this astonishingly sweet hymn of love and goodbyes. Watch ’til the end and pass the Kleenex. Trust, this is the best Thanksgiving video you’ll see all day.

Bless Johnny and June forever.

I love these old pictures of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Turn on any TV this morning and you can see the 2015 version. Here’s a bit of parade history from Wikipedia:

The tradition started in 1924, tying it for the second-oldest Thanksgiving parade in the United States, along with America’s Thanksgiving Parade in Detroit.

In 1924, the annual Thanksgiving parade started by Louis Bamberger in Newark, New Jersey at the Bamberger’s store was transferred to New York by Macy’s. In New York, the employees marched to Macy’s flagship store on 34th Street dressed in vibrant costumes. There were floats, professional bands and live animals borrowed from the Central Park Zoo. At the end of that first parade, as has been the case with every parade since, Santa Claus was welcomed into Herald Square. At this first parade, however, the Jolly Old Elf was enthroned on the Macy’s balcony at the 34th Street store entrance, where he was then “crowned” “King of the Kiddies.” With an audience of over a quarter of a million people, the parade was such a success that Macy’s declared it would become an annual event.

Anthony “Tony” Frederick Sarg loved to work with marionettes from an early age. After moving to London to start his own marionette business, Sarg moved to New York City to perform with his puppets on the street. Macy’s heard about Sarg’s talents and asked him to design a window display of a parade for the store. Sarg’s large animal-shaped balloons, produced by the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Akron, Ohio, replaced the live animals in 1927 when the Felix the Cat balloon made its debut. Felix was filled with air, but by the next year, helium was used to fill the expanding cast of balloons.

At the finale of the 1928 parade, the balloons were released into the sky where they unexpectedly burst. The following year they were redesigned with safety valves to allow them to float for a few days. Address labels were sewn into them, so that whoever found and mailed back the discarded balloon received a gift from Macy’s.

Through the 1930s, the Parade continued to grow, with crowds of over 1 million lining the parade route in 1933. The first Mickey Mouse balloon entered the parade in 1934. The annual festivities were broadcast on local New York radio from 1932 through 1941, and resumed in 1945 through 1951. The three-hour Macy’s event is held in New York City starting at 9AM EST, on Thanksgiving Day, and has been televised nationally on NBC since 1952.

The Thanksgiving Turkey float during th

Today, as always, the 89th annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade winds its way from 77th Street and Central Park West to the front doors of Macy’s Herald Square. The parade has been an annual, and beloved tradition since 1924. (From 1942 to 1944, it was put on hold thanks to World War II.)

What does the parade cost? A Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade spokesman said:

“Thanks for thinking of us. Unfortunately, we do not disclose any costs associated with the production of the Macy’s Parade.”

But it’s broadcast annually by NBC and I’m sure it costs to get your float in the parade and then there’s ad revenue, so it might actually be a money-maker for the retailer. (Let’s hope so, they’ve had a not-so-great year, closing many locations across the country….) Thousands of Macy’s employees VOLUNTEER to help with the parade, so no wonder Macy’s is mum on the subject of money. Here’s some info we DO know:

Macy-s-Thanksgiving-Day-Parade_2013-11-26_15-58-56

High winds sometimes make the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade a hazard for volunteers as well as onlookers. Felix the Cat was the first giant balloon ever in the parade and one year he got tangled in telephone wires and caught on fire making him the first giant balloon accident as well, but not the last.

One year Barney was torn open on a lamppost causing him to rapidly deflate. In 2008, the Keith Haring ballon struck the NBC booth during the live broadcast, causing Al Roker, Meredith Viera and Matt Lauer to be cut off the air until it was removed. The whole idea is semi-funny until someone gets hurt. The most dramatic balloon accident, was with the Cat in the Hat, where someone was actually injured. The victim sued the city (for $395 million!) and settled for an undisclosed amount. But otherwise it just makes for a more exciting time than when all things go right.

Strayhorn (right) with Ellington

November 29, 1915Billy Strayhorn

William Thomas Strayhorn is a major musical figure for me, & he is a considerable contributor to the world of jazz, as well as an imperative Gay Icon. He is the composer of one of my most admired songs. I have chosen a clip of Lady Gaga’s haunting version, proving that this music still speaks to us today.

Strayhorn grew up & went to school in Pittsburgh,  all the while taking private classical piano lessons. He formed a trio that played daily on a Pittsburgh radio station, & he composed a musical for his high school. He even wrote one of the most perfect pop songs of all time, Lush Life, now considered a jazz classic, while he was a teenager.

When he was 23 years old, he was introduced to Duke Ellington, who happened to be performing with his orchestra in Pittsburgh, & Strayhorn’s life changed completely. Ellington was so impressed with the kid that he welcomed him into his own household, where he lived as part of Ellington family.

Strayhorn worked for Ellington for the next 30 years as his arranger, composer, pianist & collaborator. Ellington said of him:

“Billy Strayhorn was my right arm, my left arm, all the eyes in the back of my head, my brain waves in his head, & his in mine.”

Strayhorn was out of the closet as a gay man at a time when such a thing was nearly impossible, especially moving in the rarefied & homophobic Jazz World of Harlem. His association with the great & popular Ellington helped somewhat protect him from discrimination. Strayhorn was quite open about his relationship with Bill Grove, a white guy, although they were forced to live separate apartments to avoid attention.

Strayhorn lived, unnecessarily, in the shadow of Ellington. Strayhorn helped produce a body of work that has no rival in its originality & range, from unforgettable pop tunes to jazz melodies to orchestral suites to film soundtracks. He was able to live & write songs because of the protection provided by the famous band leader. Being kept safe came with a heavy price, when Ellington took credit for all of Strayhorn’s compositions & Strayhorn worked without any sort of contract. While Ellington is considered the most influential & celebrated jazz composer of the 20th century, Strayhorn is still goes unrecognized by the public, even by jazz lovers.

Ellington’s signature song, Take The A Train, was, unknown to everyone at the time, written entirely by Strayhorn. He never received any royalties, not a dime for his most famous creation. He worked without recognition or reward. He is responsible for some of the greatest songs of all time, standards in the jazz & pop catalogs: Lush Life, Day Dream, Johnny Come Lately, Maybe, A Love Like This Can’t Last, Satin Doll, & the ironically titled, Something To Live For.

In a dispute over royalties in late 1940, ASCAP (American Society Of Composers, Authors & Publishers) blocked its members from broadcasting any of their compositions over the radio. But Ellington, one of ASCAP’S most celebrated composers, needed those radio broadcasts to promote record sales, which paid for his orchestra members’ salaries. Strayhorn cleverly came to the rescue. During a train trip across the country to join Ellington in LA, Strayhorn, not an ASCAP member, worked for 6 straight days, hardly ever stopping to sleep, composing dozens of songs. Strayhorn’s engaging, exciting new works kept The Duke Ellington Orchestra solvent for years. Ellington’s own theme song Sepia Panorama was still forbidden to be broadcast, so for the new radio theme Ellington chose Strayhorn’s own Take The A Train which premiered New Year’s 1941.

Many of Strayhorn’s creations were recorded by his BFF, Lena Horne. Shortly after arriving in NYC in 1940, Strayhorn, then 24 years old, & his then boyfriend, Aaron Bridgers, a fellow jazz artist, bravely lived openly as a couple in Harlem, an arrangement that drew enough attention to the couple that they would spit up, with Bridgers fleeing to Paris in 1947. Horne had wanted to marry Strayhorn, & always referred to him as the great love of her life. Strayhorn used his classical background to coach Horne’s vocal technique & we all know how that turned out.

Strayhorn finally left Ellington in the late 1950s to pursue a solo career. Ellington received the only credit on their collaborated score for the film Anatomy Of A Murder (1959), but the 2 jazz greats worked together one more time on the album The Nutcracker Suite, featuring jazz interpretations of melodies by Tchaikovsky. The original album cover has Strayhorn’s name & photograph next to Ellington’s.

Strayhorn joined the fight for Civil Rights in the early 1960s & wrote songs that honored Martin Luther King, Jr. including King Fit The Battle Of Alabama, recorded by The Duke Ellington Orchestra.

Strayhorn lived a life of heavy drinking & smoking. He was with his partner, Bill Grove, when he was called from this world in 1964, taken by that damn cancer, just weeks before King was assassinated. He was only 51 years old when he took that final bow.

Strayhorn had also worked in the early years of Gay Rights (years before Stonewall). He wrote the lyrics & music to what I think is one of the most perfect gay laments ever composed. Most performers say it’s difficult to sing. I never dared. It sounds like no other song in The Great American Songbook:

I used to visit all the very gay places

Those come what may places

Where one relaxes

On the axis of the wheel of life

To get the feel of life

From jazz & cocktails

The girls I knew had sad

& sullen gray faces

With distant gay traces

That used to be there

You could see where they’d been washed away

By too many through the day

12 o’clock tales

Then you came along with your siren of song

To tempt me to madness

I thought for a while

That your poignant smile

Was tinged with the sadness

Of a great love for me

I was wrong

Again,

I was wrong

Life is lonely again

& only last year

Everything seemed so sure

Now life is awful again

A thought full of hearts could only be a bore

A week in Paris will ease the bite of it

All I care is to smile in spite of it

I’ll forget you, I will

While you are still burning inside my brain

Romance is mush

Stifling those who strive

But, I’ll live a lush life in some small dive

& there I’ll be

While I rot

With the rest of those whose lives are lonely too

The Coconut Grove townhouse of the late celeb dermatologist Fredric Brandt just sold for $2.9 million. Brandt committed suicide last April at age 65. Friends said that in addition to suffering from depression, he was supposedly devastated by a satire of him in an episode of the Netflix comedy The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. His clients included Madonna, Kelly Ripa, and Stephanie Seymour, and other famous and well-off devotees.

Brandt paid $712,800 for the home in 1990, in part, to showcase his prized art collection, which was auctioned off last month at Philip’s auction house in London. Among his works were pieces by Damien Hirst, Rudolf Stingel, Andy Warhol, Yoshitomo Nara, Richard Phillips, Christopher Wool, and Cy Twombly bringing in nearly $50 million.

Allan Kleer, a realtor at Fortune International Realty who handled the sale of the house says;

“The spiral staircase was custom-designed to show off the art as you walk up.

In these cases, if somebody asks why the seller is selling, we usually say they are deceased. But if people ask for details, I’m always honest. For some buyers it would be a deal-breaker. For others it doesn’t matter.”

Florida law doesn’t require sellers to disclose homicides, suicides or deaths that occur on the property. (Brandt hanged himself in the home’s garage.) Around 300 people attended a memorial service held in his honor at Temple Israel in Miami last spring. His was an interesting and ultimately sad story. If you are interested, Lili Anolik‘s Vanity Fair story on Brandt sheds a lot of light.

Michael Lucas and a “friend” at work or on vacation?

Dangerous_Liaisons_-_Michael_Lucas

Michael Lucas, the porn star/ owner of Lucas Entertainment, is being sued by the owner of the Acacia Mansion in Ojai, California who says he rented the property under false pretenses. Owner, Kristina Knapic, alleges that Lucas rented the property under a fake name that looked like ‘Anna’ and showed up to take the keys by saying he was her brother in law. The Smoking Gun reported that Lucas stayed there for five days and left

“Urine, semen and fecal matter on the linens, carpets, upholstery, walls, ceilings and in the hot tub. Enema kits were found throughout the house- on the floors, in the beds, in nightstand drawers and in the trash.

Various sexual devices were found in the beds and in the trash…The hot tub water was brownish in color.”

Gross. The cost of the five-days was around $5,000 but the owner has put in a claim of $30,000 to Airbnb saying the renter had asked to book the property for a ‘summer vacation.’ The suit demands that Lucas must not sell or distribute any footage from the the stay, stating;

“Plaintiff has not, and does not, rent the property for the purposes of filming adult pornographic movies.

Such an image is not one plaintiff wants associated with her pristine home.”

These Instagram and Facebook pictures taken by Lucas from August 12 show him at a house that looks like the Acacia Mansion, but the posts are listed as being somewhere else in Ventura County.

I rent my country place out in the Catskills through a rental agent, not Airbnb. If you have a “mansion”, you are being cheap NOT to get an agent who screens potential renters, finds out details of their stay and carries insurance for damages. Secondly, from the two bedroom shots here below, if you ask me this place is decorated like a brothel, so it’s not surprising someone thought it might be good for a porn shoot. And considering all of my real estate stories are tagged #realestateporn, I really couldn’t resist.

#RetroTravel: Flying Commercial Was Once Glam (& Even Fun!) On a Boeing 747

$

747-Economy-Class

The last few days are some of the busiest of the year for American airports, but the word “glamorous” has not been used in ANY descriptions of getting one place to another by plane. From 1970 until 2007, the Boeing 747 was the largest passenger carrier ever and these pics from the early days of it’s launch shows, by today’s standards their RIDICULOUSLY spacious cabins, comfortable lounge chairs and smartly-clothed passengers. (What the what?) In the ‘golden age’ of commercial aviation, airlines competed on service (not price) and the 747 was the undisputed king. Flying was intended to be a memorable experience (it is today but not for the right reasons.) Service was paramount and commercial air travel was a social affair for the well-off. The 747 had forward and aft lounges where passengers were free to stretch their legs, have a cocktail, (smoke!) and network the plane. Today, the only way to get this kind of service is to fly private.

#NotSoFast: Porn King Michael Lucas Says Owner’s Claim That He Trashed Her Mansion Is Bogus

As we reported last week, porn star and Lucas Entertainment owner, Michael Lucas, was slapped with a lawsuit for allegedly leaving bodily fluid stains, enema kits, dildos and other things in a Californai Airbnb rental. But according to Queerty, the gay porn mogul has denied the allegations, suggesting the bodily fluids may actually belong to the property owner herself, who he claims is a “professional extortionist.” The property owner, Kristina Knapic, alleges in her lawsuit that Lucas rented her mansion in Ojai under false pretenses in August. According to Knapic, Lucas booked the house as a “summer rental” using the fake name of “Anna.” When he showed for the keys, he told Knapic he was Anna’s brother-in-law.

Five days later, Knapic returned to her house and was horrified to find, according to the suit…

“…urine, semen and fecal matter on the linens, carpets, upholstery, walls, ceilings and in the hot tub…. enema kits were found throughout the house — on the floors, in the beds, in nightstand drawers and in the trash” and that “various sexual devices were found in the beds and in the trash. The hot tub water, was brownish in color.”

Knapic found a business card for Lucas Entertainment on the floor and started to put the pieces together (or see dollar signs.) Now, she wants $30,000 and demands that Lucas not distribute the footage, if any, shot on the property.

“Plaintiff has not, and does not, rent the property for the purposes of filming adult pornographic movies. Such an image is not one plaintiff wants associated with her pristine home.”

But now Lucas is firing back. In the statement below, Lucas says there is absolutely “no merit” to Knapic’s claims. He also says that, contrary to her insisting she maintains a “pristine home,” there is a “fairly well-equipped sex dungeon” on the property, which is not mentioned in the Airbnb listing but is available for use by tenants. (What!?)

Lucas sent screen grabs to Queerty from two text message conversations he had with Knapic shortly after checking out of the rental, in which he says everything appeared to be just fine:

013c6970-d988-4a9f-a874-70decb3a1580

In his statement, Lucas also suggests that it was actually Knapic who threw the wild sex party and that she is “now looking to a porn company to fund the repairs” to her sex dungeon.

His statement, below;

Simply stated, there is no basis whatsoever to this claim, and we have
photographic evidence to prove that.

Ms. Knapic was a resident in a guest house on the premises during our
entire stay. Our windows faced her windows, we shared the yard and
garden, we shared laundry facilities. If there were any activity
which would have resulted in the damage she now claims, it would have
been evident.

When we first arrived, we inquired if it would be possible to extend
our stay, but were told we could not because the house was already
rented to others.

Paragraph 17 of the complaint says Ms. Knapic entered the property on
August 16, after we had vacated the property, and found a mess.
That is a completely false statement.

On August 27, 11 days after we left, we texted Ms. Knapic to ask if
something we had forgotten in the refrigerator had been found. She
responded by text on August 31 that they were in Cancun and that their
cleaning staff had cleaned the house and threw everything out. Not one
syllable about any issue with the horrible condition in which she
claims we left the house on August 16.

There was absolutely no claim at that time of any problems at the property.
Cleaning staff went through the house to prepare it for the next
rental. Again, absolutely no complaints about the property.
In fact, we have photographs and video that we took on both our
arrival and departure dates showing that we left the property in
pristine condition. Ms. Knapic’s assistant Dorian even complimented
me on how clean the house was.

Obviously, if the house was in the condition as described in her
complaint, the response on August 31 would have been something other
than “sorry, my cleaning staff threw everything away.”

Ms. Knapic claims in paragraph 20 of her complaint that bodily fluids
were found on the walls and ceiling. If true, that must have been one
heck of a party. No such party occurred on the days we were there …
and she was there the entire time.

Here’s the truth: the house has a unique and unadvertised feature:
a fairly well-equipped sex dungeon in the basement, complete with a
sex swing, whips, chains and miscellaneous bondage paraphernalia. A
video of her sex dungeon is attached. We did not use this room nor
any of the equipment in it.

Not having been served with any papers, we cannot ascertain if the
complaint as filed is verified. But if Ms. Knapic continues with her
claims, she will have to make statements under oath and provide
admissible evidence of her claims. It’s also her lawyer’s job to
ensure she does not commit perjury.

If the house was trashed, it was trashed by someone other than us. It
is possible that she or her renters had a sex party in the dungeon
that got out of hand, and she is now looking to a porn company to fund
the repairs.

I have also included a few reviews on the house from other sites such
as TripAdvisor.

In my opinion, this woman is a professional extortionist, and that’s
clear from the reviews she has received. It’s also an obvious
contradiction that she did not keep the security deposit, but now has
decided to file a lawsuit.

Ms. Knapic alleges that our filming will damage the “reputation and
romantic image” of the house. If that was a real concern, she could
have framed her complaint innocently and omitted the salacious
details. By drafting the complaint as she has, Ms. Knapic has secured
the publicity and notoriety she so clearly sought.

It took two months for Ms. Knapic to concoct this false claim and file
for damages. Her lawsuit is absolutely without any merit whatsoever.

Kinda sounds like this woman doesn’t have a leg to stand on in court. I SO wish Lucas had pics of Knapic’s sex dungeon –don’t you!?

UPDATE: Well, my wish came true. Michael Lucas Tweeted me the link to a video of said dungeon, shot by porn star Dylan James. Check it out.

#LGBT: Is Boston’s Gay Bar Jaque’s Haunted By a Mean Drag Queen Named Sylvia Sydney?

So, apparently, Boston has a haunted gay bar: Jacque’s Cabaret in Bay Village. It was opened as a standard bar but two years later, in 1940, Jacque’s became a gay bar. In the 60s and early 70s it was a lesbian hangout, but at some point it started featuring drag shows, as it does today.

In Sam Baltrusis‘s 2012 book Ghosts of Boston, comic Jim Lauletta claims that he encountered something unusual while performing at the club in 2010. One night, going down the basement stairs he felt a strange energy and thought he saw someone out of the corner of his eye… according to Peter Muise in New England Folklore;

After Lauletta said the energy felt like it had a “bit of an attitude,” Jacques’s manager suggested it might be the ghost of Sylvia Sidney, the bar’s most famous performer. A drag pioneer known as the “Bitch of Boston,” Sidney eschewed the gentle femininity most early drag performers cultivated and instead indulged in crude humor. Sidney died in 1998 at the age of 68, so perhaps her ghost still wants another moment in the spotlight. If you’re feeling brave but don’t want to summon Sidney’s ghost, you can watch one of her performances on YouTube. Be warned: they’re full of toilet humor, sex jokes, racial slurs, and nose-picking. Oh, and a really dirty story about Nat King Cole.

I don’t believe that Sidney died in a particularly traumatic way, but her ghost may not be the only one haunting Jacques. According to a rumor that has circulated for many years, the bar may also be haunted by victims of the infamous and tragic Cocoanut Grove fire.

The Cocoanut Grove was a popular Boston nightclub located near Jacques on Piedmont Street. On November 28, 1942 the bar was filled with an estimated 1,000 people when a fire broke out. The flames spread quickly as they ignited flammable decorations, and the main exit became blocked as patrons tried to escaped through the club’s revolving doors. Other exits had been locked earlier that night by the management to prevent people from sneaking in, while still other doors only opened inwards and were blocked as people fell against them. By the time the fire ended 492 people were dead, making it the second most deadly nightclub fire in the United States. The club’s permitted capacity was only 460.

What’s the connection to Jacques? Well, according to longstanding rumors in the gay community, Jacques was used as a temporary morgue for the victim’s bodies. It is not proven, but is entirely possible. Photos show the bodies being laid out on Piedmont Street so it’s not inconceivable that the police would have used a nearby bar as well. According to the rumor some of the victims still haunt the place where their bodies rested.

An interesting fact: an older friend of mine said he heard the rumor from Sylvia Sidney herself. Did she believe it herself or was it just part of her act? We’ll probably never know, unless Sidney tells us the truth from other side.

You can see Sylvia in action below, but we warned, Blanch… she’s not that funny and she’s not that nice. If anyone was going to come back and haunt people, it’s this bitch. Watch. Boo!

“This is my kinda place.”

However, Lucas says that they didn’t use it when staying in the house.
