Drea in happier times inside her East Village apartment where she lived for 22 years

Actress Drea de Matteo is among those who lost their homes yesterday after a massive fire destroyed three buildings in the NY’s East Village. She Instagrammed the above pic with the caption:

“NYC’s finest trying to put out the flames to mine [and] many others’ apartments. Speechless.”

The fire began in a sushi restaurant downstairs after workers hit a gas line. De Matteo also uploaded this shot below of the void where her apartment building once stood at Second Avenue and East Seventh Street.

“A hole where my NYC home of the last 22 years once stood.”

Later, the two adjacent buildings in the shot burned and collapsed in the evening hours. Nineteen people who were in the area were taken to hospitals to be treated for various injuries as a result of the blast and fire. No dead are confirmed, but two people remain missing this morning according to the New York Times.

On the heels of yesterday’s explosion in New York’s East Village, a major fire has hit the famed gay getaway Cherry Grove on Fire Island.  Fire Island is a magical place and this is very sad.  The Ice Palace has hosted endless performances by everyone from Liza Minnelli to Carol Channing, but it is also the home of some pretty major drag including brilliant daytime pool shows.

Instragram user marissacorvo posted this picture which makes it look like the Ice Palace is still standing, but the extent of the damages remains unclear.

Ryan Reynolds, who is playing everyone’s favorite anti-hero in the upcoming Deadpool, tweeted out a picture giving us a first look at his costume for the movie. Deadpool, aka Wade Wilson, in his full costume is sprawled out across a bearskin rug in front of a roaring fire. Reynolds’ caption for the image:

Kehinde Wiley: A New Republic at the Brooklyn Museum has been a highly anticipated show but apparently, not EVERYONE loves this artist. Kehinde’s work raise questions about race, gender, and the politics of representation by portraying contemporary African American men and women. The artist uses the conventions of traditional European portraiture and the show includes some sixty paintings and sculptures.

A lot of people love his work and with good reason. In a world where the performing arts are lauded 24/7, the visuals arts has few art superstars and Kehinde is one of them. Not since Keith Haring and Jean Michel Basquiat has there been such clamoring at opening for a young artist. I’ve met him a few times through friends who collected his work early on. At Art Basel Miami Beach (up until recently) Kehinde would organize a fishing trip with a small group, and then the next night have a huge fish fry party for a few hundred of his real and extended family, friends and admirers.

But as I mentioned, not everyone loves Kehinde. The Village Voice published a controversial piece two weeks ago by Jessica Dawson (who, for the record, is 40-something and white) that STILL has everyone up in arms. To back up a bit, Wiley’s portraits are of real people. He invites individuals, often strangers he encounters on the street, to sit for portraits. In this somewhat-collborative process, the model chooses a reproduction of a painting from a book and reenacts the pose of the painting’s figure. By inviting the subjects to select a work of art, Wiley gives them some control over the way they’re being portrayed. In the Voice article, titled provocatively, “What to Make of Kehinde Wiley’s Pervy Brooklyn Museum Retrospective?“, Dawson writes:

“… look closer at the 50-some objects — painting, sculpture, stained glass — and you’ll see predatory behavior dressed up as art-historical affirmative action. Wiley’s targets are young people of color who in these pictures are gussied up in the trappings of art history or Givenchy. Judging from Wiley’s market and institutional success — in his fifteen-year career, this is his second solo at the Brooklyn Museum — Wiley has proven himself a canny operator seducing an art public cowed by political correctness and willing to gloss over the more lurid implications of the 38-year-old artist’s production.”

Burn, right? Not that this one review should overshadow the show or the work itself. It does stop one cold to see that an art critic, thinks this way, and doesn’t edit themselves but “goes public” with the idea. Here’s another head-scratching excerpt:

“What Wiley and his subjects do behind the scenes may be none of our business, but his paintings kiss and tell. Saint Andrew grinds his crotch against a wooden cross, and in case we don’t quite get it, Wiley has painted free-floating spermatozoa across the canvas…

In what world is a Yale-minted artist who lures young men into his studio with the promise of power and glamour not predatory?”

Wow. Everyone sees works of art differently, no doubt, and a critic is certainly entitled to their opinions, but this reviewer seems to be getting at something else. Some subtext, I’m reading as more than vaguely homophobic. Wiley is black and gay, not that it matters, but the implication seems to be that he is using his power as an artist in the “wrong way”. Nevertheless, don’t let this review color YOUR view of the work. If you find yourself in Brooklyn between now and May 24th, go and see the work yourself. For more info go here.

I’m from Houston originally and one of the best things about the city, is the Menil Collection, one of my favorite museums. The building designed by Renzo Piano, is part of a series of structures in a residential neighborhood in a 30-acre complex designed by David Chipperfield Architects, that includes Piano’s Cy Twombly Gallery, the Dan Flavin Installation at Richmond Hall, and the Rothko Chapel by Philip Johnson & John Burgee.

The Menil Collection just unveiled details on the new Menil Drawing Institute (MDI), designed by L.A.-based Johnston Marklee. The building will be the first freestanding facility in the U.S. created especially for the exhibition, study, storage, and conservation of modern and contemporary drawings. Johnston Marklee’s design begins…

“Enclosed volumes set between these courtyards provide the main areas for the MDI’s programs. A living room – both a circulation spine and a gathering place – runs between the west and east entrance courtyards. On the living room’s south side, the space opens into the exhibition galleries. On the north, the living room gives access to administrative offices on one side of the scholars’ cloister and to study rooms and the conservation lab on the other.”

Even 35+ years later, the opening sequence to Woody Allen‘s Manhattan still gives me goose bumps. Shot in black and white, it’s really a small story set in a big city. The monologue parodies this genre of film, and as the cliché goes, New York is just another character in the story and with this kind of set-up, it’s beautifully clear. For this New Yorker, the city shown here is mostly gone –but there’s a new, exciting one in its place. Watch.

It seems that Tony Montana’s Miami mansion in Scarface was really in Santa Barbara. Yes, shocker –Hollywood lied to you. It’s made to look over the top tacky onscreen but the real mansion was designed by the architect Grosvenor Goodhue in 1906 and is the pinnacle of extravagant elegance. This four-bedroom, 10,000 square foot home fit for a Cuban drug lord has heated floors, steam showers, fountains, stunning ocean views, a MAJOR swimming pool and a guest house. But the crowd the Scarface house appeals to must be limited, really. If you have the $35 million dollar asking price, it’s not something you are looking for so it might be left out of high-end marketing materials unless an actual drug lord is house hunting.

I saw this shot posted from blog called EV Grieve, which covers local news about the East Village of Manhattan. I reposted it on Facebook on Friday, with the heading “What IS wrong with people?” It got tons of shares and comments from friends who were wondering the same thing and all were shocked that these young ladies were so tasteless as to pose in front of this tragedy. (And speculating if they were New Yorkers or tourists. I voted tourists and was right…) The story made the national news, but in case you missed it, a gas line exploded and caught fire at a sushi restaurant and 2 missing are presumed dead, 19 were injured, 4 critically and scores of people are homeless as three building burned to the ground and were reduced to rubble. As I posted here the Soprano‘s Drea de Mateo lost her apartment of 22 years, as did her neighbors. This is sad and shocking to all New Yorkers and most thinking people. A commenter wrote on EV Grieve:

“Disgusting beyond words.”

Others called it “disaster porn.” One frustrated neighbor wrote in a sign taped to a front door on nearby 7th Street:

“THIS IS A TRAGEDY NOT A TOURIST ATTRACTION. SHOW SOME RESPECT.”

No shock that some jackass added “Get Over Yourself”, presumably meaning the writer of the note. These girls aren’t the only one taking selfies, many have been busted. So, let this be a lesson, DON’T take selfies in situations like these kids, or you might find yourself on the cover of The New York Post and the subject of national ridicule.

According to Madge, her record label said, No, then they brought in Kanye West to re-mix the songs and blend both records into just the one. It’s why there are 4 versions of Rebel Heart and the sequence of songs seems ‘uneven’.

Her label even convinced her Living for Love would be her comeback smash and they put all the marketing behind it. Instead, her music ended up being banned from BBC Radio 1 which was unnecessary because there isn’t not one hit on the version of Rebel Heart she released.

Rebel Heart is not a Madonna record. Rebel Heart is what her label tried to engineer as her comeback record, as interpreted by Kanye West.

All I listen to is my demo version of Rebel Heart since the demos are far superior to the mess she released and that’s why it’s not selling. It’s crap.

The twitterverse, of course, instantly lit up with people eager to condemn the jokes.

What do you think? Transphobic and bullying? Or just stupid and not funny? I like that everybody’s knee-jerk reaction is to step up and protect Bruce – I think that says nice things about where we are as a culture – but as far as bullying goes, it’s pretty benign. Jamie just needs to get better material.

It is a battle of secrets and knives in this fast-paced and innovative self-contained cooking competition series where a chef’s cunning is almost as important as their culinary skill. In each stand-alone episode host Max Silvestri guides four new chefs through head-to-head elimination rounds in which they are tasked with creating a stunning dish featuring a main ingredient. The twist is that they have no idea what that ingredient is while cooking. Based on the popular parlor game ‘Two Truths and a Lie,’ competing chefs ask each other three “yes or no” questions to determine what their mystery ingredient is, and their opponent answers strategically with two truthful answers and one outright lie. If you can’t stand deceit, get out of the kitchen.
