#Breaking: Teacher Taken Into Custody After Firing Gun In Classroom

A teacher was taken into custody Wednesday, after firing one shot from a handgun after barricading himself in an empty classroom at a Georgia high school.

Officers talked the teacher into surrendering and took him into custody without incident after about 30 to 45 minutes. Dalton, Ga., police spokesman Bruce Frazier said,

We had officers inside the building quickly.

Frazier said the teacher, identified as Jesse Randal Davidson, 53, would be charged, although the exact nature of the charge isn’t clear. According to the school website, Davidson who taught there since 2004, was described as the “voice of the Catamounts,” the Dalton football team, and has written a two-volume history of the team.

He apparently fired the handgun out the window and did not aim at anyone. Frazier said,

I don’t know if he fired the gun off to let people know to back off or what.

It certainly seems that he didn’t have any intention to harm anyone else.“

This all unfolded after Davidson apparently refused to allow students into the classroom and barricaded the door.

Police said no students were ever in danger. The school, which has about 2,000 students, is located about 90 miles north of Atlanta.

In the wake of the Parkland shooting tragedy that left 17 dead, Trump and federal and state legislators have proposed arming teachers, a move backed by the NRA and almost universally derided by Democrats and sane people.

Katy Perry & Orlando Bloom Are Back Together Again (Does That Mean More Nudes Are on the Way?)

Former lovebirds Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom were spotted on a romantic trip to Prague, all but confirming that they are TOGETHER AGAIN.

A source from The Sun declared: ‘They’re back on. Katy wants to make things work this time around.

‘She tried, but she couldn’t cut him off. She cares too much about him. This time, they’re keeping things low key – but they’re back together.’

If you recall, Katy and Orlando were THE it-couple for about a year in 2016 but then issued a statement last March saying they were taking ‘respectful, loving space’ from each other. It was far from a bitter breakup, though. The two were often spotted at events together and frequently liked each other’s Instagram posts.

via The Daily Mail:

This supposed reconciliation came after Katy revealed she is thinking about having children soon.

‘I’m preparing to do a big soul overhaul very soon that I’m nervous about,’ the California Gurls singer explained in the cover interview for March’s Glamour Magazine.

‘I want to emotionally elevate myself. I don’t want to hold on to childhood trauma anymore. I want to grow into becoming an adult.

‘I’m preparing myself for having a family of my own in the near future. And that’s the thing: I want to do a little bit more soul surgery before I have a family of my own so that I don’t transfer any of those lingering feelings.’

So yes, good luck – Love is always better the second time around…

And all of this, of course, is really just an excuse to link to the infamous NUDE ON A PADDLEBOAT pics of Orlando. So enjoy. And here’s to more full frontal in 2018.

‘Sweet Cheeses!’ tweeted Ru last year, upon hearing the good news. ‘My heart is beating so fast right now!’

#BornThisDay: Lupita Nyong’o

March 1, 1983Lupita Nyong’o:

“The fear of failure was just as high as the high of success, because I could fall, and I could fall far.”

It is an astonishing accomplishment for an East African woman with an exotic accent and very dark skin color, who had a rather late start on a career, to become the most famous female African actor in the world and an Academy Award winner.

She even managed to avoid the cliché “Oscar Jinx”, that mysterious curse that has plagued past winners. You would think that winning the film industry’s most prestigious award would shoot its winner to the top of the A-list, yet oddly, many Oscar-winning performers have seen their careers plummet as soon as they put that statue on their mantle.

2014 Academy Awards, photo via youTube

I was so dumbstruck by her enticement, elegance and eloquence with her acceptance speech at the 2014 Academy Awards:

“Thank you to the Academy for this incredible recognition. It doesn’t escape me for one moment that so much joy in my life is thanks to so much pain in someone else’s. And so I want to salute the spirit of Patsey for her guidance. And for Solomon Northup, thank you for telling her story and your own.”

Yet, I still thought to myself: “Hollywood better find a terrific follow-up project for this stunning actor.” Although Nyong’o followed her Academy Award-winning performance in her feature film debut, Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave (2013), with a smallish role as a flight attendant in a preposterous action flick Non-Stop (2014), she only had to wait for another year before becoming a Disney Studio’s regular with a major role in the highest-grossing film of 2015, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, followed by the biopic Queen Of Katwe (2016) with David Oyelowo, and the live-action/CGI remake of the studio’s The Jungle Book (2016).

After Nyong’o Oscar win, Kenyan and Mexican entertainment news outlets fought over which country got to “claim” her. Nyong’o tried to clear that up, saying:

“I’ve seen the quarrels over my nationality, but I’m Kenyan and Mexican at the same time. So again, I am Mexican-Kenyan and I am fascinated by carne asada tacos.”

Nyong’o was born in Mexico City, but her parents are Kenyan. She grew up in Kenya, and at 16-years-old, her parents sent her back to live in Mexico, so she could learn Spanish. Still, the press sometimes referred to her as a Mexican actor or an African actor, or an African-American actor.

Nyong’o started her film career working behind the scenes as a production assistant on Fernando Meirelles’ The Constant Gardener (2005), The Namesake (2006) directed by Mira Nair, and Salvatore Stabile’s Where God Left His Shoes (2007). She said she was inspired to become an actor by Ralph Fiennes, the star of The Constant Gardener. She directed and produced In My Genes (2009) a documentary about the discrimination of Kenya’s albino population, and appeared in the Kenyan television series Shuga, an MTV Africa/UNICEF production about HIV/AIDS.

Her parents were in political exile in Mexico when she was born, but when they returned to Kenya, her father became member of the country’s senate while her mother was an executive with the Africa Cancer Foundation.

Nyong’o earned a BFA in Film from Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts, in 2003. In 2010, she returned to the USA and received a master’s degree from the Yale School of Drama in 2012, having performed in productions at the school’s Yale Repertory Theatre. Just a few weeks before graduating, she found out she had been cast in 12 Years A Slave.

“12 Years A Slave” , RiverRoad Productions, via YouTube

Produced by Brad Pitt, the film is based on the 19th century narrative written by Solomon Northup, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, a Northern free man who was kidnapped and sold into slavery in the South. Nyong’o plays Patsey, a young slave who befriends Northup while being abused by a plantation master and his wife, chillingly portrayed by Michael Fassbender and Sarah Paulson. Nyong’o was nominated for a Golden Globe Award, a BAFTA Award and two Screen Actors Guild Awards, winning Best Supporting Actress. She was only the sixth black person to win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, the first African to win the award, the first Mexican to win that award, and the first Kenyan to win any Oscar. She was the 15th female to win an Oscar for a debut performance.

Nyong’o also became a fashion icon that award season, with red-carpet appearances and photographs in Glamour, Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, In Style and W magazines. Nyong’o’s appearance in the November 2017 issue of Grazia U.K. brought a lot of controversy, after she pushed back at the magazine for retouching her photo by smoothing out her hair to look more European. The magazine apologized.

Nyong’o made her NYC stage debut in autumn 2015 with the Public Theater’s production of Danai Gurira’s Eclipsed, a harrowing story of the struggles of several Liberian women during civil war. It transferred to Broadway the following year and both the play and Nyong’o received Tony Award nominations.

Now, Nyong’o is a huge global star who with two Disney franchises: Star Wars with Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017) the highest-grossing film of last year, and the new Marvel adaptation of Black Panther, an immediate gigantic box-office smash when it opened on President’s Day weekend bringing in over $360 million worldwide, and as I write this on Wednesday, $750 million worldwide, shattering stereotypes about the limitations of marketing a film with a mostly black cast, and a global hit that dares to ask what does it truly mean to be African? Its Afro-aesthetics and unapologetic black swagger has none of that usual wise black characters that are there just to teach white people a valuable life lesson.

“Black Panther” (2018) Marvel/Disney via YouTube

Nyong’o just wrapped an Australian film, Little Monsters. She has stated that she would welcome the chance to return to Broadway. She is producing and starring in a miniseries adapted from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s novel Americanah, about a young woman who leaves military-led Nigeria for America.

She supports WildAid, an organization that helps protect elephants and Mother Health International, providing relief for pregnant women in areas of disaster, war and poverty.

Nyong’o resides in Brooklyn. She is fluent in Spanish, Luo, English, and Swahili.

In October, Nyong’o wrote an op-ed for The NY Times, revealing that Harvey Weinstein sexually harassed her twice in 2011, while she was a student at Yale. She vowed that she would never work with Weinstein and she turned down a role in his movie Southpaw (2015). Nyong’o also wrote about her commitment to work for women directors and male feminist directors who had not abused their power.

At the Essence Black Women In Hollywood event in 2014, she gave a speech on the beauty of black women and talked about her insecurities. She has now appeared on four Vogue covers, the first black actor to do so, an ironic twist for a woman who claims that:

“There is a part of me that will always feel unattractive”.

#QueerQuote: “‘Excuse Me While I Whip This Out.” – Bart, “Blazing Saddles” (1974)

Warner Bros (1974) via YouTube

Cleavon Little (1939-1992) portrayed Sheriff Bart in the Mel Brooks film Blazing Saddles (1974), which brought him a BAFTA nomination. He began his career in the late 1960s on the stage. In 1970, he starred in the Broadway production of the musical Purlie (1970) winning both a Drama Desk Award and a Tony Award.

Blazing Saddles, a film that probably could not be made in our own politically correct era, began as story outline by Andrew Bergman that he  intended to produce himself. It was titled Tex-X, a play on Malcolm X’s name. Alan Arkin was hired to direct with James Earl Jones playing the sheriff. Brooks liked the story and purchased the film rights from Bergman. Brooks brought in a group of writers and posted a large sign: “Please do not write a polite script.”

Brooks came up with the name Blazing Saddles while taking a shower one morning.

Richard Pryor was Brooks’ original choice to play the Sheriff Bart, but the studio, claiming his history of drug arrests made him uninsurable, refused to approve financing with Pryor as the star. Little was cast in the role, and Pryor stayed on as a writer. Brooks offered the other leading role, the Waco Kid, to John Wayne; he declined, deeming the film too dirty, but assured Brooks that “he would be the first one in line to see it.” Gig Young was cast, but he collapsed during his first scene from alcohol withdrawal syndrome. Gene Wilder replaced him. Johnny Carson turned down the role of Hedley Lamarr role before Harvey Korman was cast. Madeline Kahn objected when Brooks asked to see her legs during her audition. Brooks:

“She said, ‘So it’s THAT kind of an audition?’ I explained that I was a happily married man and that I needed someone who could straddle a chair with her legs like Marlene Dietrich in Destry Rides Again. So, she lifted her skirt and said, ‘No touching.'”

Kahn as Lili Von Shtupp, via YouTube

Brooks had numerous conflicts with Warner Bros over the frequent use of the N-word, plus Lili Von Shtupp’s (Kahn) seduction scene, the farting around the campfire, and Mongo (Alex Karras) punching a horse. Brooks, whose contract gave him final control, declined to make any changes, except for cutting Bart’s final line during Lili’s seduction:

“I hate to disappoint you, ma’am, but you’re sucking my arm.”

When asked later about the use of the N-word, Brooks said he received consistent support from Pryor and Little. He recently wrote:

“If they did a remake of Blazing Saddles today, they would leave out the N-word. And then, you’ve got no movie.”

Brooks said he received many letters of complaint after the film’s release, most of them were from white people.

The world premiere of Blazing Saddles was in February 1974, at the Pickwick Drive-In Theater in Burbank. 250 invited guests, including Little and Wilder, watched the film on horseback.

Film star Hedy Lamarr sued Warner Bros., charging that the film’s running parody of her name infringed on her right to privacy. Brooks said he was flattered; the studio settled out of court for a small sum and an apology for “almost using her name.” Brooks said that Lamarr “never got the joke.”

Blazing Saddles grossed $120 million, becoming only the tenth film up to that time to pass the $100 million mark. The film received three Academy Award nominations: Best Supporting Actress for Madeline Kahn, Best Film Editing, and Best Original Song. The film also earned two BAFTA awards nominations, for Little and Best Screenplay. It won the Writers Guild of America Award for Original Screenplay for writers Brooks, Bergman and Pryor.

#ShadySupper: Yesterday Trump Publicly Trashes Sessions, Last Night Sessions Dined in Public with Trump’s Nemesis

$

Oh, yes, the shade of it all…

Yesterday Trump blasted Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Twitter, which he has done before. But this time was HARSH.

Why is A.G. Jeff Sessions asking the Inspector General to investigate potentially massive FISA abuse. Will take forever, has no prosecutorial power and already late with reports on Comey etc. Isn’t the I.G. an Obama guy? Why not use Justice Department lawyers? DISGRACEFUL!

It was all over the news that Sessions was humiliated in public once again with the POTUS trying to tell him how to do his job.

According to Axios, who got this scoop,

“If Donald Trump finally follows through on his rage and fires Jeff Sessions, the image with this story will be printed in history books.”

Last night, Sessions walked into a high-end Washington restaurant to dine with his deputy Rod Rosenstein, who oversees the Mueller investigation and the Solicitor General Noel Francisco, who is his number 2 at D.O.J..

The point being made here visually, seems to be if you fire Sessions, then what? Fire Rosenstein? And then what after that?

Axios reported that sources close to the situation say that yesterday felt different than Trump’s usual rages. Sessions’ allies are concerned that Trump is totally fed up with his AG.

A source close to Sessions, who has spoken with him, says that Francisco requested the meeting and that it was,

in no way planned as pushback or an act of solidarity against the president.

OK. But you DO have offices for meetings during the day, right?

Waiting for the morning poop tweets about this pic from Trump. Will update.

#VanityNotFair: The REAL Reason Graydon Carter Quit, ANOTHER Cover Scandal, & Why Isn’t Anna Going To the VF Oscar Party?

$
0
0

I QUIT

Graydon Carter’s decision to retire after a quarter century as Vanity Fair’s editor in chief was spun as his own idea, and it was. But the times they were a changin’… and Wintour was coming.

Anna Wintour is the editor of Vogue but also artistic director of Condé Nast, who supervises the company’s 15 magazines, but has mostly stayed away from Carter’s VF and David Remnick’s New Yorker.

But as the Daily Beast reported last fall, over a year ago, Carter fought against a CNP restructuring plan. Wintour, and the top brass, wanted VF to lose its creative director and fact-checkers, along with those of the other magazines, to consolidate them into company-wide departments as a cost-saving measure.

A VF “insider” told the Daily Beast,

It all kind of came to a head last fall, and Graydon was pissed off about that. It was an Anna project—she was invested in it—and that was seen as a real affront.

If Carter were to stay on he would undoubtedly have been forced to fire his loyal staffers and he wasn’t willing to do that. So he quit.

A Carter friend said,

Graydon is very, very devoted to the staff—unlike many other editors. Graydon finds it very, very difficult to let anyone go. It’s just very hard for him, and he didn’t want to be in the situation where he has to let people go any more than he has already done.

Tom Freston, the co-founder of MTV and former chief executive of Viacom said,

I think he’s gotten out with total class here—it was a well-executed exit. He’s leaving on top, wishing that things were doing better. The magazine business is clearly going through some tumultuous times, and one could argue that the heyday is over.”

Radhika Jones is the new editor-in-chief of the magazine. She was editorial director of books at the New York Times, at The Paris Review and Time magazine, where she oversaw all arts and entertainment.

Just last month Jones fired 15 of VF‘s top people, some who had been there for 25 years.

The final version

BAD OPTICS

So Radhika Jones’ first cover as editor in chief did not go as smoothly as she might have hoped. Last month, the Hollywood issue, shot by Annie Leibovitz, included Photoshopped images of Oprah Winfrey and Reese Witherspoon that appeared to give them extra limbs. (Also, James Franco was shot for that same cover and then edited out after his sexual allegation scandal blew up.)

The cover of the magazine’s March issue has a close-up of Jennifer Lawrence which looks VERY close to the December cover of The Hollywood Reporter, gazing to the right with parted lips and a shaft of sunlight across her face.

An earlier version of the cover (above left) had used a cover line in an outline font just as the Hollywood Reporter had used across the bottom of its cover. The final version was fixed.

VF said to the Post,

We’re delighted with our gorgeous cover of Jennifer Lawrence shot by renowned photographers Inez and Vinoodh. The image captures the essence of the story, and we stand by it. As with any cover, different options and layouts were considered during the editorial process. There was never any discussion of reshoots, and to suggest there is any kind of crisis here is ridiculous.

VF EIC, Radhika Jones

IT’S MY PARTY

When it was announced that Carter was stepping down, everyone began to speculate if Anna Wintour would snatch the Oscar party, which used to be THE party of the year, for herself.

Well, the invites to the party are out, and editor Radhika Jones is the only person hosting.

What about Wintour? She won’t even be attending. She’ll be in Paris for fashion shows. One insider said,

The party will be pretty much the same as last year and the year before. Same venue. Same team organizing it.

Carter will be on vacation in France, but decidedly NOT in the front row with Anna.

Longtime party veterans say the event has lost some of its fun since moving from Morton’s to Sunset Tower Hotel, and then to its current tent at the Wallis Annenberg Center on Santa Monica.

The guest list has grown from 800 to 3,500, and the big stars still come, but they don’t stay. They get their picture taken, and then head off to other parties. Madonna’s [party] is the hottest ticket.

So what happens next year? Will Jones and Wintour co-host? If the Queen wants it, her subject could not object.

Carter makes a cameo on his last issue cover, far right.

#LGBTQ: Remembering Activist Pedro Zamora on His Birthday

$

Photo from MTV via YouTube

Pedro Zamora:

“As gay young people, we are marginalized. As young people who are HIV-positive and have AIDS, we are totally written off.”

I was still in my 30s when the The Real World (1992-2013) premiered on MTV in 1992. I smartly stopped watching The Real World, or for that matter, MTV, when I turned 40-years-old. The Real World, which was inspired by the PBS documentary series An American Family (1973), was the longest-running program in MTV history and one of the longest-running reality series. It is credited with launching the modern reality show genre on television. Seven young people were chosen to temporarily live in a house together in a new city while being filmed non-stop. Now, such a set-up seems old hat, but in the early 1990s, it was riveting television viewing.

The Real World took on issues such as Sex, Prejudice, Religion, Abortion, Illness, Sexuality, HIV/AIDS, Death, Politics, and Substance abuse, yet it was also the template for future reality television shows: Rednecks, Party Girls, Virgin Christians, Substance Abusers, Goody-Two-Shoes, Fags, Douchey Dudes; allowing them all to fight their tiny culture wars on television for our viewing pleasure.

Through the 30 seasons, Zamora of The Real World: San Francisco in 1994, its third season, continues to make the biggest impression. Zamora and his six cast-mates: Mohammed BilalRachel CamposPam LingCory MurphyPuck Rainey, and Judd Winick moved into the house at 953 Lombard Street on Russian Hill on February 12, 1994, and filming commenced.

Zamora was a Cuban-American gay man who died from complications from HIV the day after The Real World: San Francisco season finale aired. He was diagnosed with HIV in his junior year of high school, and by the time he was 19-years old, he was fully involved in a career as an HIV/AIDS educator and activist. When the opportunity arose to audition for a spot on The Real World, Zamora saw it as a chance to further his message of HIV/AIDS awareness.

He brought a scrapbook of his education work to show his The Real World cast-mates, immediately lectured them on HIV transmission, and took them along on his speaking gigs. He and his boyfriend, Sean Sasser, had a tear-jerking commitment ceremony before the television cameras. Anyone who saw that season of The Real World will never get Zamora’s story out of their minds.

Once The Real World: San Francisco season ended filming, Zamora fell fatally ill. Zamora had no medical insurance and MTV set up a trust fund to pay for his medical bills. Pre-Affordable Care Act, Zamora received Medicaid, but he could not, due to his AIDS diagnosis, qualify for an insurance policy.

Cast members Ling and Winick rushed to be by his side at a hospital in Miami. Their friendship deepened and together they embraced their friend’s cause. A year after they moved out of the spotlight, they moved in together. Ling became an M.D. specializing in HIV Health, Judd writes for DC Comics. They are now married and living in San Francisco. Tales Of The City author Armistead Maupin spoke at their wedding ceremony.

Winick’s graphic novel, Pedro And Me: Friendship, Loss, And What I Learned, was published in 2000. It was awarded six American Library Association awards, and Winick won his first GLAAD Award.

Pedro (2009) is a very moving biopic produced by MTV, written by Dustin Lance Black, the cutie pie who won an Academy Award for the screenplay of Milk (2008), husband of Olympian Tom Daley, and the creator of When We Rise, the LGBTQ Rights miniseries which ran on ABC a year ago

Pedro includes a reenactment of the phone call of appreciation to Zamora and his family from President Bill Clinton, who thanks him for his work, and who facilitates, along with Attorney General Janet Reno, Secretary Of Health And Human Services Donna Shalala, a reunion of Zamora’s older brothers and sisters, who were allowed to leave Cuba to join the family in Miami. Clinton also introduces the film. The Zamora family did not accept Sasser, however, and Zamora was too sick to explicitly communicate to them the importance of Sasser in his life. This led to confrontations between Sasser and the Zamoras, who told him that: “Pedro does not need to have a lover anymore”. Sasser was not allowed to see Zamora during his final days.

Sasser and his second husband, Michael Kaplan, had been my neighbors in Portland in the first part of the 21st century. He was shy and sweet and funny. In August 2013, Sasser, who had been HIV-positive for 25 years, was taken by Mesothelioma, a rare cancer of the lungs. He was just 44-years-old when he left this world.

Sasser’s relationship with Zamora helped break the taboo against showing two men in a loving, stable relationship on television. When they exchanged vows in a commitment ceremony in the The Real World loft, it was the first wedding for a same-sex couple in television history.

The Sean Sasser Memorial Endowment Fund at AIDS United is used to support programs that improve the health of gay men of color.  The Pedro Zamora Young Leaders Scholarship at The National Aids Memorial Project supports the education of emerging young leaders committed to ending the HIV/AIDS.

In his short life, Zamora did so much to advance awareness and understanding of HIV, as well as to change a generation’s acceptance of gay people. When Sasser married Zamora on The Real World, audiences were not horrified, as they might have been just a decade earlier, instead they were charmed. Their romance was voted “Favorite Love Story” out 30 seasons of Real World of cast members dating and falling in love.

A Leap Year baby, Zamora would have been 13-years old in 2016 or 46 years-old today, or tomorrow; I don’t know how Leap Year babies celebrate. No matter how you count it, it would be a better world if he was still with us.

Someone Put a Jason Voorhees Statue at the Bottom of a Minnesota Lake to Terrify Divers (& It’s Working)

Ch-ch-ch-ch Ah-ah-ah-ah

If you know your Friday the 13th lore, you’ll recall that at the end of Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives, Tommy Jarvis was able to drag Jason to the bottom of Crystal Lake in chains attached to a boulder where he floated underwater, still alive, but powerless to escape. It’s a terrifying visual, one that has prevented me from doing any deep lake swims for YEARS, lest a mottled hand reaches out and pulls me under. You can never be too sure.

Now an unknown prankster has recreated the famous death scene by planting a Jason statue, complete with mask and machete, 120 feet deep in a Minnesotan lake that is supposedly very popular with divers.

via Dread Central:

Having been down in the water, the statue has developed a worn, algae-covered appearance that almost makes it seem all the more lifelike. My only complaint is that it looks very rigid, like it’s clearly a mannequin or some sort of statue. But that’s such a small gripe when you stop and realize that someone put a freakin’ Jason Voorhees statue in the bottom of a lake!

The statue was planted in 2013 and, as such, has gone through some wear and tear over the years. In the first video below, you can see the statue looking pretty solid. The second video, however, shows what a few years of water can do to the installation.

Terrifying. The lake is located near Crosby MN, if you desire to do a bit of diving this summer.

Keith Richards Thinks Drugs Today Are Too Bland

Rolling Stones’ eternal wild man Keith Richards, 74, spoke to The Telegraph, telling them he’s currently sober and hasn’t had a drink since Christmas.

“I’m not saying I’m definitely off all of this stuff,” he protests. “In six months’ time, I might be on it again. But at the moment, for a couple of months, I haven’t touched it.” When I ask how he is finding abstinence, he chuckles ruefully. “It’s novel.”

I’ll bet.

He goes on to say that he’s over today’s drug options, anyway.

“Drugs are not interesting these days,” he said. “They are very institutionalised and bland. And, anyway, I’ve done ’em all.

Oh Keith. There’s still Flakka. And bath salts. And WASP. And Shamboiling. And Jenkem.

The things I could show you, my dear. Come, take my hand.

Hold your breath, make a wish
Count to three

Come with me and you’ll be
In a world of pure imagination

Take a look and you’ll see into your imagination
We’ll begin with a spin
Traveling in the world of my creation
What we’ll see will defy explanation

[Chorus]
If you want to view paradise
Simply look around and view it

Anything you want to, do it
Want to change the world?
There’s nothing to it

Deadline is reporting today that Kristen Wiig has been lassoed (ha HA!) into the role of Wonder Woman’s nemesis Cheetah in the upcoming Wonder Woman 2.

The pic, which has Gal Gadot back and director Patty Jenkins, is set in the ’80s during the Cold War. Sounds like this will happen quickly, and a symbol of female empowerment gets a sequel where both main characters are women.

Wiig has proven her versatility during her run on Saturday Night Live, and she was Oscar-nominated for co-writing Bridesmaids, which also provided her breakout starring turn. This will be her first role as a super villain, so she continues to break new ground. Stay tuned.

Not quite sure what to make of this. It was reported that Emma Stone was the studio’s choice, but passed on it. Kristin is great, love her to death, don’t get me wrong. But as a super villain? Can she play it straight? Can she be menacing? Can she not devolve into schtick? Fingers crossed because A LOT is riding on this. As Deadline reminds us: The film is top priority for Warner Bros, after the first grossed $821 million worldwide.

A little back story:

There have been a number of different Cheetah incarnations in the Wonder Woman comics, since she first appeared in October 1943.

Among the most likely choices – via Wikipedia:

1. There’s Priscilla Rich, a 1940s-era blonde Washington, D.C. debutante of aristocratic upbringing who also has an overwhelming inferiority complex and suffers from a split personality and self-importance. After being eclipsed by Wonder Woman at a charity event and failing to kill her during an escapology act, Priscilla retreats to her room and collapses before her makeup mirror. There she sees an image of a woman dressed like a cheetah. “Horrors!” she cries, as she gazes at her evil inner-self for the first time. “Don’t you know me?” replies the reflection. “I am the REAL you—the Cheetah—a treacherous, relentless huntress!” The image commands her to fashion a Cheetah costume from a cheetah-skin rug. “From now on,” intones the reflection, “when I command you, you shall go forth dressed like your TRUE self and do as I command you…”

2. There’s British archaeologist Dr. Barbara Ann Minerva, born as the heiress of a vast fortune in the ancient family site in Nottinghamshire. Ambitious, selfish, and severely neurotic, Barbara develops a passion for archaeology that eventually led her to search out a tribe in Africa who utilizes a female guardian with the powers of a cheetah. A band of marauders kill the guardian and most of what remained of her original expedition party. Barbara, with the aid of the priest, Chuma, the caretaker of the ancient plant god Urzkartaga, takes her place after being told that she would gain immortality. Her powers are conferred to her by ingesting a combination of human blood and the berries or leaves of Urzkartaga. Unfortunately for Minerva, the host of the Cheetah persona is intended to be a virgin. Minerva is not, however, so her transformations were part curse and part blessing, as she experiences severe pain and physical disability while in her human form and bloodthirsty euphoria while in her cat form.[

3. There’s also another version of Barbara Ann Minerva, who was an expert in dangerous relics and was in the possession of a dagger once belonging to a lost tribe of Amazons. When she cut herself on it, she was possessed by the Goddess of the Hunt, transforming her into a human/cheetah hybrid. Her claws can also turn Superman into a cheetah-like being. The origin of the Cheetah is dated back to the San Tribe, who for centuries had hunted alongside the cheetahs and every generation one of their members is chosen to become the host of the Goddess of the Hunt until one day a hunter killed the current host; the knife used to kill her was cursed until it fell in the hands of Minerva.

Not sure which one they’re going with, or if they’re just giving her a whole new backstory, but it sure will be interesting to see.

Issue #2 of Daddy Issues just dropped, featuring scrumptious cover star Milan Christopher (photographed by Josh Paul Thomas).

Daddy Issues is the brainchild of Oly Innes aka HOLLYWOOD, who brought his hit UK party of the same name to LA last year, and now offers up this ‘zine that he hopes encapsulates the inclusive spirit of the “DI” scene.

Daddy Issues started as a small dance party in a sweaty basement club in East London in June 2016 and has now grown into a full on international queer brand.

Founders OLLYWOOD and Borja Peña now manage the brand from opposite sides of the world. Borja running the parties in London (in a larger venue) and Madrid and OLLYWOOD looking after Los Angeles, San francisco and “pop ups” soon in New York (April 29th), Mexico and Chicago.

Last November we launched our first venture into print media by releasing Issue 1 of the Daddy Issues Zine. This was a collaboration with photographer Christopher Sherman and Pure for Men. The full colour NSFW, 52-page pocket size zine was a limited edition, collectible ode to the beauty of a diverse range of men. Proving sexy comes in all shapes and sizes and colors.

About ISSUE 2:

Our second issue is entitled Meet Me In The Flesh; a collaboration with Fleshjack. The issue is 84 pages of NSFW queer art and photography. The zine is made up of 22 different photo stories from all over the world. We have stories shot in Australia, India, Paris, London, New York, Canada and Madrid.

Aesthetically Inspired by gentlemen’s magazines from the 70’s and 80’s, our zines mission is to create an extremely sex positive platform that gives artists and models a platform to create work that is uncensored, inclusive, diverse and celebrates all different kinds of queer subjects, juxtaposing masculinity and femininity in true Daddy Issues style.

Get your copy here. And get their extremely popular apparel merchandise line which now has x9 designs of Tees, hats and swimwear. All available online at www.daddyissueslondon.com .

From an interview we did with Oly last year:

What is the idea behind Daddy Issues?

Daddy Issues has been happening monthly in London and now the party launches in Los Angeles monthly at The Lash downtown on 06/22/17. We also are an apparel line. In September we are doing a very special Daddy Issues in New York which will also be the launch of the Daddy Issues zine.

What came first the T-shirts or the event?

The party came first and we worked with the very talented @heyrooney on our artwork. People were responding so well to the artwork that it was very natural for them to become t-shirts. Soon we are launching our swim suits and caps and right now we are developing sweatshirts and beach towels. Order your Daddy Issues tee at: www.daddyissueslondon.com

What can attendees expect from the event?

Our parties are SUPER CUTE! For our LA launch we have awesome music from our fantastic DJ line up. At every party we give away our very popular tees and pin badges. We are giving the venue a very millennial pink makeover. Of course there will be mega hot go-go dancers who will be wearing pretty much nothing.
