Earlier this week Sundance TV announced that they are green lighting a new docuseries with World of Wonder‘s very own Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato! They are teaming up with Peacock Productions to produce Ministry of Evil: The Twisted Cult of Tony Alamo.

executive produced by Emmy Award®-winners and World of Wonder co-founders Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato (Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures, Inside Deep Throat), and Elizabeth Fischer and Leslie Mattingly of Peacock Productions, chronicles the life and crimes of Tony Alamo, who, with his wife, Susan Alamo, became a born-again, fire-and-brimstone televangelist. The two launched The Tony and Susan Alamo Christian Foundation in 1969, which soon evolved into a cult that is said to still operate today. Together, by skirting the law and enforcing a code of silence among their followers, the Alamos came to wield unimaginable power, becoming millionaires on the backs of their believers. When Susan Alamo died in 1982, Tony continued getting away with heinous cruelty that included child abuse, polygamy and pedophilia. The series, which is currently in production, will explore the cultural consequences of the Alamo empire and feature rarely-seen archival footage, including an exclusive videotaped deposition with Alamo himself. It will also weave together interviews with the FBI agent who took Alamo down as well as cult survivors who have never previously shared their stories.

Peacock Productions is a nonfiction production company and part of NBC News.

Erykah Badu Loves Bill Cosby and Sees the Good in Hitler (“He Was a Wonderful Painter”)

In a completely bonkers interview with Vulture – that I’m going to distill into two talking points but I urge you to read the whole thing for context– singer Erykah Badu has a few raaaaaather controversial things to say.

On BiIl Cosby:

I love Bill Cosby, and I love what he’s done for the world. But if he’s sick, why would I be angry with him? The people who got hurt, I feel so bad for them. I want them to feel better, too. But sick people do evil things; hurt people hurt people. I know I could be crucified for saying that, because I’m supposed to be on the purple team or the green team. I’m not trying to rebel against what everybody’s saying, but maybe I want to measure it. Somebody will call me and ask me to come to a march because such and such got shot. In that situation I want to know what really happened. I’m not going to jump up and go march just because I’m green and the person who got shot is green. The rush to get mad doesn’t make sense to me.

… I’m an observer who can see good things and bad things. If you say something good about someone, people think it means that you’ve chosen a side. But I don’t choose sides. I see all sides simultaneously.

That’s not something most of us are good at.

We’re not, and I’m okay with that. I’m also okay with anything I had to say about Louis Farrakhan. But I’m not an anti-Semitic person. I don’t even know what anti-Semitic was before I was called it. I’m a humanist. I see good in everybody. I saw something good in Hitler.

Come again?

Yeah, I did. Hitler was a wonderful painter.

No, he wasn’t! And even if he was, what would his skill as a painter have to do with any “good” in him?

Okay, he was a terrible painter. Poor thing. He had a terrible childhood. That means that when I’m looking at my daughter, Mars, (Badu’s daughter with enigmatic rapper Jay Electronica. She also has another daughter, Puma, with the West Coast rapper the D.O.C. ), I could imagine her being in someone else’s home and being treated so poorly, and what that could spawn. I see things like that. I guess it’s just the Pisces in me.

But don’t you think that someone as evil as Hitler, who did what he did, has forfeited the right to other people’s empathy?

Why can’t I say what I’m saying? Because he did such terrible things?

Well, yes. But it’s also disheartening to hear you say that at a time, like now, when racism and anti-Semitism are so much in the air. Why would you want to risk putting fuel on that fire?

You asked me a question. I could’ve chosen not to answer. I don’t walk around thinking about Hitler or Louis Farrakhan. But I understand what you’re saying: “Why would you want to risk fueling hateful thinking?” I have a platform, and I would never want to hurt people. I would never do that. I would never even imagine doing that. I would never even want a group of white men who believe that the Confederate flag is worth saving to feel bad. That’s not how I operate.

I appreciate that. But I really struggle with the idea of how much we’re supposed to make an effort to understand or have empathy for people who have dangerously backwards or hateful thinking. You want to take the moral high ground, but sometimes that also feels the same as ceding territory.

You got that Pisces in you, that two-fish.

Aaaaand it goes on from there. You’re going to have to read the whole interview and make up you’re own ind because I don’t even know where to begin with this. (Photos: Pacific cOast News)

Rosie Comes For Chris Cuomo After He Had Kellyanne Conway on His Show Again (“Do Ur Job Damnit!”)

CNN anchor guy Chris Cuomo had Kellyanne Conway on his show for yet another annoying interview of back-and-forth nattering that went absolutely nowhere, but apparently got good ratings and a lot of press. Which is really all that matters to CNN who keep claiming they don’t care about things like “lies” or “distracting chatter” but continually fill hour after hour with shows featuring… lies and distracting chatter.

Chris tried to act like he was being noble by calling out Minister of Propaganda Kellyanne Goebbels on her bullshit, but thankfully we have Rosie O’Donnell to keep things real.

Yeah. What she said. Stop booking these fascist idiots. We see what you’re doing and it’s annoying AF.

Joel Taylor, of Discovery Channel’s Storm Chasers, died aboard “Harmony of the Seas” Royal Caribbean ship, and although there is no official cause of death, TMZ is reporting the 38-year-old reality star may have overdosed prior to being found unresponsive in his cabin.

“It appears the death could be an overdose [as he was] consuming controlled substances,” law enforcement sources told the gossip site.

Passengers aboard the  added that they witnessed Taylor taking drugs, including ecstasy and cocaine.

One cruise ship-goer said Taylor was knocked unconscious after consuming a large quantity of GHB, a central nervous system depressant date rape drug often used to treat sleep disorders, on the dance floor. The source said Taylor was removed from the floor by two friends who then took him to his cabin.

Passengers have posted on social media that several people were arrested at the Ft. Lauderdale port for possession of drugs.

#BornThisDay: Performer, Florence Mills

January 25, 1896Florence Mills:

“I belong to a race that sings and dances as it breathes. I don’t care where I am so long as I can sing and dance. The wide world is my stage and I am my audience. If I didn’t feel like that I wouldn’t be an artist. The things you do best for other people are the things you would do just as well for yourself. My greatest ambition is to see the white people ignore the colored question.”

She was famous for her thrilling singing voice, earning the monikers ”The Jazz Queen” and “The Happiest Sound Around”. She was an influential contributor to the great Harlem Renaissance.

The Harlem Renaissance was a cultural, social, and artistic explosion that took place in the Harlem neighborhood of Manhattan in the 1920 and 1930s. During that era, it was known as the “New Negro Movement”. The Harlem Renaissance was a rebirth of African-American Arts. Though it was centered in Harlem, many black writers from Africa and the Caribbean who lived in Paris were also influenced by the Harlem Renaissance.

Interest in the lives of African-Americans brought experimental collaborative work with black and white folk, such as George Gershwin’s opera Porgy And Bess, and the queer Virgil Thomson and Gertrude Stein’s Four Saints In Three Acts. The black sound was appropriated by white band leaders defying racist attitudes to include the best and the brightest African-American stars of music in their performances.

There was some pressure for artists of the Harlem Renaissance to play to the sensibilities of conservative white America. Queer Culture, while far-more accepted in Harlem than most places in the country, was most fully lived out in smoky dark bars, nightclubs, and cabarets. A gay blues music scene boomed, and queer artists used its popularity as a way to express themselves with more honesty. Although, you could still be arrested for being gay. Among the popular Blues artists were Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith, who sang:

“When you see two women walking hand in hand, just look em’ over and try to understand: They’ll go to those parties, have the lights down low, only those parties where women can go.”

Singer Gladys Bentley was a cross-dresser and the owner of Clam House a music club for queer patrons. The Hamilton Lodge in Harlem hosted an annual drag ball that attracted thousands to watch more than hundred young men dance in drag.

The Harlem Renaissance challenged racial definitions and stereotypes, but also gender roles, sexuality, and sexism in America in general. The Harlem Renaissance was way ahead of the rest of the USA in embracing Feminism and Queer culture. The black bourgeoisie saw this as causing more hatred of black people. Yet, despite white and black Conservative America, gay culture helped define the Harlem Renaissance.

African-Americans used Art, Literature, Music and Theatre to prove their humanity and demand for equality. The Harlem Renaissance led to more opportunities for blacks to be mainstream. New Black Fiction caught the attention of the USA and Europe. Among the artists who became famous around the world: Zora Neale Hurston, Louis Armstrong, Jacob Lawrence, Josephine Baker, Langston Hughes, Bill “Bonjangles” Robinson, Paul Robeson, and… Florence Mills.

Mills lived for the stage. She started at an early age and she performed until she took that final curtain call. She was only here for a brief time, but she accomplished a great deal, including a leading role in developing Black Theatre.

The daughter of slaves, Mills was the seventh of eight children (five of her siblings died). She began her career singing on the sidewalks of Washington DC for change. She was still a kid when she became a member of The Black Patti Troubadours, a comedy act. She also began winning contests for her singing, cakewalks and buck dances.

When she was just seven-years-old, she was a guest star in her first professional show, The Sons Of Ham (1903). But, The New York Society For The Prevention Of Cruelty To Children (NYSPCC) took her from the show and held her in custody until they could place her in an institution run by nuns. That was the only time that Mills took a break from showbiz.

When she was 10-years-old, her mother changed Mill’s birthdate on her birth certificate, so she could work. She formed a group with two of her sisters, and The Mills Sisters performed in black clubs and toured for a decade. They broke up in 1916, and within a year, Mills move to Chicago and began work at the Panama Café, a black cabaret.

In 1917, Mills left Chicago and joined The Tennessee Ten, a group that played the best Black Burlesque theatres. They had a little revue titled Folly Town that was so successful it ran for five years.

Mills was cast in Shuffle Along, one of the first Broadway musicals produced, written and performed entirely by African-Americans. It featured music and lyrics by Noble Sissle and Eubie Blake, and premiered on Broadway in 1921, running for 504 performances.

Shuffle Along launched the careers of Josephine Baker and Paul Robeson, and became such a hit that it caused “curtain time traffic jams” in front of the theatre. It was truly a sensation. It was the first Broadway show where black audiences could sit in orchestra seats rather than being relegated to the back balcony.

When Shuffle Along went on tour, Mills stayed in NYC and was cast in The Plantation Revue, another all-black musical, also a hit.

Meanwhile, in London, Sir Charles B. Cochran was looking for American entertainments for the London stage. He brought in The Plantation Revue’s entire cast to London for a show he called Dover Street To Dixie, with an English cast in the first half (Dover), and an American black cast for the second half (Dixie). It was based on The Begger’s Opera by John Gay, also the source material for Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht’s The Threepenny Opera. Mills and the show were a huge hit in London, although they had to work against the racism of England.

When she returned to NYC, Mills was in the integrated cast of The Greenwich Village Follies (1924). It ran for more than a year.

In 1926, she was cast in Blackbirds, an all-black revue that had a long run at a theatre in Harlem, ignoring Broadway. It showcased her signature tune, I’m A Little Blackbird Looking For A Bluebird.  The show played Paris and then moved to London’s Pavilion Theatre where it ran for a year. Mills became so popular in London that her success there was compared to Baker’s in Paris. The Prince Of Wales saw the show more than 20 times.

‘Blackbirds Of 1926’, Mills, Johnny Hudgins and chorus girls rehearse on the roof of London Pavilion, from New York Public Library’s Schomburg Center Archives

In 1927, while still touring in Blackbirds, Mills became exhausted and was told by her doctors that she had to stop performing. She returned to NYC and a few days later she took that final bow, taken by TB at just 31-years-old. Her funeral in Harlem drew more than 250,000 mourners.

Mills was a staunch, outspoken supporter of Equal Rights for African-Americans. Her signature song, I’m A Little Blackbird Looking For A Bluebird is a plea for racial equality, and during her lifetime she broke many racial barriers.

After her death, Duke Ellington memorialized Mills in his composition Black Beauty. Fats Waller also memorialized Mills in a song, Bye, Bye Florence.

This 1927 Edward Steichen portrait of Mills was the first ever full page portrait of an African-American person to appear in Vanity Fair Magazine

In the 2016 season on Broadway, there was a stage adaptation titled Shuffle Along, Or, The Making Of The Musical Sensation Of 1921 And All That Follows, starring Audra McDonald, Brian Stokes Mitchell and Billy Porter. It featured the original music from Shuffle Along with a book written by gay theatrical genius George C. Wolfe, based on the original show and historical events surrounding it. The new show received glowing reviews and was nominated for 10 Tony Awards, winning none. Mills was portrayed by the gorgeous Adrienne Warren (of Orange Is The New Black) who was one of those nominated.

#QueerQuote: “For Most of History, Anonymous Was a Woman.” – Virginia Woolf

In the summer of 1998, the moment I put down Michael Cunningham’s The Hours, I went to my bookshelf and picked out Mrs. Dalloway to follow the connection. It was the first time in decades that I had read any Virginia Woolf, but in my college years, I went through my lesbian phase with a serious Bloomsbury Group jag, reading everything by and about this remarkable group of friends and lovers.

The Bloomsbury Group is now noted for the many contributions its members made to their era’s literature and art. The group’s intellectual core was Virginia Stephen, who became Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) when she got married to Leonard Woolf in 1912. She is now considered one of the great modernist novelists.

The group is fascinating because they gave themselves a sort of sexual freedom that was way ahead of their time. Beginning in 1925, Virginia Woolf had a passionate affair with the dashing Vita Sackville-West. In the first flush of romance, Woolf wrote what has become a classic of Gay Fiction, the experimental fantasy Orlando (1927), which argued that love and passion can ignore gender, and that gender itself is fluid.

Others in the Bloomsbury group gravitated to new ways of looking at relationships. Although Virginia Woolf’s sister Vanessa Stephen married Clive Bell, the true great love of her life was Duncan Grant, who was gay and had been sexually involved with her brother Adrian Stephen. During WW I, they all lived together at a country estate with David “Bunny” Garnett, who was the lover of both.

Three-way sexual cocktails with a twist of gay were common within the Bloomsbury Circle. Lytton Strachey was gay, but in the early days of Bloomsbury, had proposed marriage to Virginia Woolf. In the 1920s, he lived platonically with painter Dora Carrington. When they both fell in love with the same man, Carrington married the object of their mutual desire, and the trio set up housekeeping together. The cross-dressing Carrington had affairs with many women, confiding to a friend that she had “more ecstasy” with female lovers than with men, “And with no shame”. Are you able to keep track of all this?

Virginia Woolf was the center, the gravity and the soul of the Bloomsbury Group, which totally unraveled after she filled her coat pockets with stones and walking into the River Ouse near her home, drowning herself in the spring of 1941.

I read the book of Job last night. I don’t think God comes out well in it.”

Rotterdam Police Can Now Confiscate Clothes from People on the Street Who Look Too Poor to Afford Them

Police in the Dutch city of Rotterdam have a controversial new pilot program that targets young men wearing designer clothing or expensive jewellery who look like they’re too poor to afford the items in question. If they can’t adequately prove how they were able to purchase their clothes and/or accessories, the items will potentially be confiscated on the spot, with suspects expected to strip down in the street.

via Oddity Central:

“We’re going to undress them on the street,” Rotterdam police chief Frank Paauw told Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf. “We regularly take a Rolex from a suspect. Clothes rarely. And that is especially a status symbol for young people. Some young people now walk with jackets worth €1,800. They do not have any income, so the question is how they get there.”

The department spokesperson said that the items police would be on the lookout for included “big Rolex[es], Gucci jackets, all those kinds of clothes.” The spokesperson could not, however, specify what types of crime they’re hoping to reduce with the program.

Critics have attacked the program, saying that the confiscation measures might be illegal and that it could quickly lead to racial profiling.

“Police won’t consider a white guy walking around in an expensive jacket to be a potential drug dealer,” Quincy, a 20-year-old Rotterdam resident told VICE. “But it’ll be a different story with minorities.”

As one Rotterdam resident interviewed by VICE said,

“I think it’s a strange way of trying to catching criminals. Why not just arrest a drug dealer when he’s actually dealing drugs?”

Indeed. Let’s try and keep this story out of the hands of bigoted American AG Jeff Sessions. Seems like just the thing he’s latch onto with his tiny possum paws and never let go.

Human Ken Doll Brings His Recently Removed Ribs in a Jar to a British TV Interview

Increasingly kooky fashionista and plastic surgery junkie, Rodrigo Alves, recently appeared on British television to reveal the results of his stylish new rib removal. For added umph, he brought the (still meaty-looking) ribs with him in a jar of formaldehyde.

via PAPER:

The 34 year-old Brazilian is the first man to ever have his ribs removed. To clarify, he lost four ribs — his original request for six to be taken out was deemed “too risky” by doctors — all of which he kept. Why did he alter his body so dramatically? So that he didn’t have to alter his blazers.

“So I can do my blazers up without having to breathe,” he clarified to the bemused hosts.

Alves underwent the surgery just two weeks prior to his interview, appearing in a full suit and corset to reinforce his spine, now that he’s lacking in support.

“Well I am 34 years old, it has been a very long journey for me,” Alves said. “I love the way I look. I love to stand out.”

Whatever it takes to feel attractive, honey.

Watch the video below. The jar of ribs makes its appears at the 0:38 mark.

NOT FAKE NEWS: Fox News F*cks Up RuPaul’s Last Name

The true curators of Fake News over at Fox News published a story to their website about Nancy Pelosi’s upcoming appearance as a guest judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars 3, and you’ll never guess what the journalists thought his last name was…

They thought his last name was Paul. So they thought his full name was Ru Paul. Anyone with a brain and an internet connection knows that his first name is RuPaul, and his last name is Charles. And don’t get it twisted, hunties. This is the full article:

Former House speaker Nancy Pelosi is throwing her hat into the competitive TV ring with a recently-announced guest judging appearance on VH1’s “RuPaul’s Drag Race.”

Pelosi will be on the runway to judge Paul’s collection of drag queens for an episode of the series’ upcoming return. The California congresswoman confirmed the news on her Twitter.

“All I can say is, you betta werk!” she wrote. “Had a fabulous time with @RuPaul and good luck to all the queens.”

For those unfamiliar with the show, it takes various drag queens and assigns them various challenges each episode that Paul and other judges then use to decide who wins.

Pelosi, as a politician, is a unique choice for the show, which typically takes its guests from the world of entertainment and comedy. Other guests expected to appear as judges this season include Vanessa Hudgens, Tituss Burgess, Kristin Chenoweth, Adam Lambert and more. Pelosi, however, feels that her appearance will hold a larger meaning during the Trump administration.

When reached by the Washington Post for comment, her reps said that her advocacy for the LGBT community in her district played a big factor in her decision to show up. She hopes to use her time to advocate and show solidarity for the LGBT community in the midst of, what she calls, attacks by the current White House administration.

The episode has already been filmed, but there’s no word yet on which episode she’ll appear in.

As RuPaul says:
