Luke Smalley’s Retrospective just opened Thursday at Clamp Art in New York this last week, surveying the late photographer’s work. Many early images of Smalley’s were inspired by yearbooks and fitness manuals. After earning a degree, in sports medicine, Smalley became interested in fine art (while earning money from modeling and working as a personal trainer). Ian Hannett writes:

“He soon created a short film based on male swimmers, which he took unannounced to [the book publisher] Jack Woody sometime in the early 1980s. Woody’s company, Twin Palms Publishers/Twelvetrees Press, then located in Pasadena, had recently printed a monograph for artist Bruce Weber, to which Smalley strongly related and greatly admired. Smalley was a quiet, relaxed individual who was easy to be around, and he and Woody soon struck up a casual friendship. Woody began taking the young artist to various Hollywood parties where he met many celebrities of the day, including people such as Herb Ritts, who also would serve as later inspiration.”

It was around this that Smalley formulated the idea for his series black and white series Gymnasium, which took fifteen years to complete. Four years later came Smalley’s second major series, Exercise at Home, which marked his foray into color and further explored themes of…

“adolescent growing pains acted out under the guise of earnest athleticism.”

Teenagers compete in simple but strange competitions in order to establish their standing within the group. In 2009 came Sunday Drive which was shown at ClampArt gallery in the fall of 2009, but sadly the artist passed away in May of that year and never got to experience his latest work’s success. The exhibit runs through May 9 at Clamp Art.

Leonardo DiCaprio bought a private 104-acre Belizean island, in 2005 for $1.75 million, and now plans to build a luxury eco-resort there. The 40-year-old actor is launching the project that will transform a small island off the coast of Belize into an eco-resort and conservation area. According to the New York Times, DiCaprio, along with a partner Paul Scialla, the chief executive of New York development firm Delos, to create the eco-conscious resort, with plans to open in 2018. DiCaprio told the New York Times of his visit to the island in 2005:

“It was like heaven on earth…. and almost immediately, I found this opportunity to purchase an island there.”

The ambitious project, called Blackadore Caye, a Restorative Island, will include sprawling villas, infinity pools and beautiful views. But not only will the island revitalize its visitors, but also help restore the land itself, as it has endured deterioration from over-fishing, deforestation and an eroding coastline. DiCaprio and his partners plan to rehabilitate the ecosystem of the area. Renderings of the project show an arc-shaped platform with villas over the water with artificial reefs and fish shelters underneath. Other features will include a nursery that will grow indigenous marine grass to support a manatee conservation area and mangrove trees replanted to replace invasive species. DiCaprio says:

“The main focus is to do something that will change the world. I couldn’t have gone to Belize and built on an island and done something like this, if it weren’t for the idea that it could be groundbreaking in the environmental movement.”

He’s to be commended for his environmental work but I’ll bet hot models are going to be suddenly VERY eco-conscious come 2018. Way to go, Leo.

#BornThisDay: Bette Davis

“Everybody has a heart. Except some people.”

April 5, 1908 – I find All About Eve (1950) to be a perfect film with not a wasted piece of dialogue or an unnecessary scene. It is one of the greatest films about theatre. For me, Margo Channing is the finest & bravest Bette Davis creation (she lost the Oscar to Judy Holliday for Born Yesterday that year).

Davis is a classic movie star but she also was the most fearless & the least vain actresses of Hollywood’s Golden Age. I am huge fan of all 6 decades of work on film with: Of Human Bondage (1934), The Petrified Forest (1936), Jezebel (1938), The Old Maid (1939), Elizabeth & Essex (1939), The Letter (1940), The Little Foxes (1941), The Man Who Came To Dinner (1942), A Catered Affair (1959), Pocket Full Of Miracles (1961), & What Ever Happened To Baby Jane (1962) among my favorites, but Davis rarely missed. Did I miss your favorite?

Besides Margo Channing, my favorite performance would have to be Davis’ work in The Whales Of August (1987), featuring an understated Vincent Price, a rare & delicate late career performance by the great Lillian Gish, whose career stretched back to the silent films of D.W. Griffith, & Ann Sothern in her only Oscar nominated performance. But for me, the true enjoyment of this film cosme from watching Davis do again what Davis always could do: create an indelible, complex character & command every scene in which she appears.

When she was filming Whales Of August, the cast & crew were having dinner when Davis started complaining about Joan Crawford. Cast member Harry Carey Jr. became unhappy & told Davis that Crawford had been his friend & that he didn’t appreciate hearing negative comments about her. Davis, without missing a beat, responded:

“Just because a person’s dead doesn’t mean they have changed.”

Davis bickered with her directors over the smallest details & she had a reputation for being difficult to work with. Still, she was so beloved by film audiences & she was in great demand. Davis is one of the few actors in cinema history who worked until the very end of her life, making well over a 100 films. She would dare audiences to hate her, & they often did, which is why we love her.

Warner Brothers Studios treated Davis badly for many years, & they paid her far less than other stars. She sued the company & lost, but the court case gave her some valuable publicity. She was then able to create a new persona as a strong-willed independent thinker, as strong as any male.

Bette Davis is a most certainly a top Gay Icon for gay men of a certain age. For guys my age, a brunch was not complete without imitations & anecdotes of Davis. She showed us that with wit, style & camp, it is possible to transcend the hard, unhappy, hateful & often humiliating world that was handed to us.

The $300 Million Hunt For 7 Lost Fabergé Easter Eggs

The entire Romanov family was executed by firing squad

This Fabergé egg, found by a junk dealer, was sold to an undisclosed buyer for $30 million

On Easter Sunday a hundred and thirty years ago, Russian Tsar Alexander III presented his wife, Empress Maria Fedorovna, with a jeweled egg to mark both the holiday and the 20th anniversary of their engagement. A white enamel shell encasing a golden yolk which contained a hen, which in turn concealed a miniature diamond crown and ruby pendant. Alexander appointed the man who made it, “Goldsmith to the Imperial Crown”. Peter Carl Fabergé would design 50 bejeweled Easter eggs for Alexander and his son, Nicholas II over the next three decades. But they became the extravagant symbols of corruption and greed that led to the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917 and the assassination of the Russian royal family a year later.

In the present day, they are practically irresistible to collectors and the idea of owning one of the lost ones has ignited a $300 million Easter Egg hunt. Forty-three are held in museums and private collections around the world (Queen Elizabeth II owns 3) but the seven are still missing. It was eight, but last year a scrap-metal dealer bought what he thought was a gold ornament, he was planning to melt down, but he later discovered it was the Third Imperial Easter Egg and worth over $30 million! The egg was sold to a mystery buyer, but the other missing baubles could worth up to $45 million each.

Toby Faber, author of Fabergé ’s Eggs: The Extraordinary Story of the Masterpieces that Outlived an Empire, also believes more will resurface. He says:

“When the Kremlin archives were opened up in the 1990s people were able to research the eggs properly. These seven were all owned by Maria Fedorovna, who survived the revolution and came to England before returning to her native Denmark.”

Each had to contain a surprise and the shells became more and more elaborate. The Tercentenary Egg, made in 1913 to mark 300 years of Romanov rule, was made of gold, silver, diamonds, turquoise and ivory. It cost 21,300 roubles at a time when the average Russian wage was 500 a year. After Nicholas II was forced to abdicate in 1917, he was exiled to Siberia. As the Bolsheviks ransacked the royal palaces many of the eggs were packed off to the Kremlin Armoury, but some disappeared. On July 17, 1918, the Tsar and his family were executed by firing squad.

Lenin had the Romanov treasures stashed away, but in the 30s, his successor, Joseph Stalin, began selling artwork to the West, including at least 14 Fabergé eggs. Some were bought by his friend, oil magnate Armand Hammer (great-grandfather to actor Armie Hammer, btw) Experts believe the Nécessaire egg and Cherub with Chariot could turn up at any time. Kieran McCarthy of London jewellers Wartski, who sold last year’s find said:

“We can trace both until relatively recently. The Cherub was in America in 1934 and 1941. And Wartski sold the Nécessaire in London in 1952. A man walked in off the street and paid [around $2000 in cash]. He was listed simply as ‘A Stranger’. I’m sure the egg is still in Britain. It’s an amazing treasure hunt.

Imperial Fabergé eggs are the ultimate prize again. They are the target for buyers wanting to reflect their riches. That’s the ultimate irony. They have come full circle and are symbols of wealth and power once more.”

In 2004, Russian oil and gas tycoon Viktor Vekselberg paid “just” $100 million for a US tycoon’s nine imperial eggs. Two would cost the same today. In 2007 Russian billionaire Alexander Ivanov paid $13 million for one, and gave it to President Vladimir Putin, who donated it to St Petersburg’s Hermitage Museum. Kieran adds:

“We’d given up hope of finding any more Fabergé eggs until last year and that was like a lottery win. But a couple have won the lottery for a second time this week, so….? I’m sure someone has a fortune, possibly nestling under their bed. All they have to do is look for it.”

Well, I looked under my bed early this Easter morning and the only Easter-related item I could find was dust bunnies.

THE 7 MISSING FABERGÉ EGGS

1. Hen With Sapphire Pendant (1886): Golden hen studded with rose diamonds plucking sapphire egg from nest. Last seen in the Kremlin’s Armory Palace in 1922.

2. Cherub With Chariot (1888): Angel pulling chariot containing an egg. Studded with sapphire and diamonds. Angel-shaped clock “surprise”. Probably bought by Armand Hammer. Possibly sold again in 1941.

3. Nécessaire (1889): Gold egg with rubies, sapphires, emeralds, and diamonds. Inside were 13 diamond beauty accessories. It got to England and was in first Fabergé exhibition in 1949. Bought for £1,250 in 1952.

4. Mauve (1897): Mauve enamel with rose-cut diamonds and pearls and a “surprise” of heart-shaped frames with portraits of Nicholas, Alexandra and their first child, Olga. Frames are in a collection.

5. Empire Nephrite (1902): Made of mineral nephrite. Diamond-studded golden base hides a tiny portrait of Alexander III. Possibly exhibited in London in 1935. One author claimed in 2004 that the egg had been found. Most experts disagree.

6. Royal Danish (1903): Enamel and gold, with precious stones, heraldic lions and royal arms with jubilee portraits of king and queen of Denmark, Maria’s parents.

7. Alexander III Commemorative (1909): Platinum, gold and white enamel with lozenge-shaped diamond clusters containing a gold bust of Alexander. Known only from a single black-and- white photo and not seen since before the Russian Revolution.

Jean-Michel Basquiat: “The Unknown Notebooks” At The Brooklyn Museum

Jean-Michel Basquiat was born in Brooklyn and died just across the river in Manhattan too young an age. In his short life, he filled many notebooks with poetic fragments, wordplay, drawings, and observations. The subject matter was a blender-full of pop culture, race, class, and the history of the world. His work sells at auction for millions and he’s become one of the most popular and valued artist of his day. He was influenced by cartoons, advertising, Pop art, street culture, politics –which is to say pretty much everything. This show gives insight into the importance of writing in the his process and the notebook pages on display contain gestation of his iconic imagery –tepees, crowns, skeletal figures, and expressivefaces— that makes appearances throughout his big paintings, as well as early drawings that relate to his series called Famous Negro Athletes. This is the first major exhibition of the his notebooks. Basquiat: The Unknown Notebooks features 160 pages, along with related works on paper and large-scale paintings. The exhibit runs through August 23, 2015 at the Brooklyn Museum.

Our pets like to hang out. It’s really what they are best at, I think… they DO have a way of sucking all of the air out of the room. They can’t know what we are doing when we are reading, except that it obviously doesn’t include THEM. They beg you to stop and PAY ATTENTION TO THEM! #RIP: Did Dermo To The Stars, Frederic Brandt, Commit Suicide Over A TV Satire?

Dr. Frederic Brandt

Martin Short's character "Dr. Grant" is said to be based on the real-life Dr. Brandt

Martin Short’s character “Dr. Grant” is said to be based on the real-life Dr. Brandt

Dermatologist to the stars, Dr. Frederic Brandt died in Miami over the weekend but the cause of death is unclear at this point. His publicist has refused to comment on specifics, but Miami Herald reporter Lesley Abranavel says her sources say his death was a suicide, and says he had been suffering from depression. The New York Post reported that a parody of him on the Netflix show Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt sent him into a downward spiral…

“The show definitely deeply hurt him. He was being made fun of because of the way he looks.”

On Tina Fey’s much-loved new Netflix series, Martin Short played a dermatologist who is a dead-ringer (no pun) for Dr. Brandt. The Post had picked up on similarities weeks ago. Short’s character, Dr. Grant, has a similar hairstyle as the real-life Dr. Brandt and he is unable to speak properly due to the amount of plastic surgery he has had. The real Dr. Brandt didn’t have trouble speaking, btw.

Dr. Brandt practiced fillers on himself for years and administered them to superstar clients like Madonna, Stephanie Seymour and MANY others. It does seem mean that the Kimmy Schmidt character was named so similarly to Dr. Brandt, but to be honest, I worked in the beauty biz for YEARS and I didn’t make the connection, and so I doubt the general public was really aware of who Dr. Brandt was either. But if this was the cause for the poor man’s suicide, it is really unfortunate and sad. (via Observer)

ANOTHER Mysterious Ring Appears In the Sky – Alien Attack Imminent

A large black ring of smoke appeared over Kazakhstan Friday, OBVIOUSLY a portal to Hell or possibly the residual trail from a Boom Tube, with parademons ON THEIR WAY TO ENSLAVE US ALL.

Via The Daily What:

The strange 100-meter wide shape lasted for only about 15 minutes before eventually fading away, according to the uploader of the video.

Kazakhstan’s Today.kzspoke with a physics professor named Andrey Solodovnik who thinks it was simply “a product of combustion” as opposed to a UFO or something more sinister.

Watch it, below.

Last year, you’ll recall, a schoolgirl was stunned when when she looked into the sky to see this enormous unexplained black ring. Georgina Heap, 16, was playing tennis with mum Jo when she was stopped in her tracks by the fascinating sight. Gazing into the sky, the pair saw a clearly defined black circle which looked like a giant smoke ring. The ring remained there for around three minutes before disappearing completely.

Watch that one, below.

And before THAT: In 2013, a transformer exploded near a studio (OR SO THEY WANT YOU TO THINK) and a  massive smoke ring emerged from it. Watch that HERE.

Whatever these mysterious black rings really are, they obviously don’t bode well for the future of the human race. Leave your thoughts and theories in the Facebook comment section.

Oh, the ecstasy! The tingles going up and down my spine! New Wave dance icon (and former RDR Season 2 judge) Terri Nunn has just been scheduled to appear at Rupaul’s DragCon May 16 & 17 at the Los Angeles Convention Center! COULD IT GET ANY BETTER THAN THAT? Terri and her band Berlin GOT ME THROUGH PUBERTY. Their songs let me know there was a whole wide, decadent world out there just waiting for me. Dancing alone in my room every day after school to songs like “Masquerade” and “Sex (I’m a)” – fantasizing about future boyfriends, future nights clubbing with future friends – got me through some pretty tough times.

Let’s review my top five Berlin songs, shall we?

5. “Take My Breath Away” – Instantly recognizable, of course, as the Top Gun theme. Written by the legendary Giorgio Moroder (and Tom Whitlock), it peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, and won the 1986 Academy Award for Best Original SongThe music video, below, features scenes from the film Top Gun intermingled with Terri performing the song in fab blue coveralls walking between pieces of planes in a windy aircraft boneyard (part of the Mojave Air & Space Port) at night.

4. “Metro” – Ultimate ’80s. Seriously, One of the most memorable songs of the decade. Nunn has said the song, which was THE breakthrough hit for Berlin, “defined us and defined that period of music.”

3. “No More Words” –The first single off their album Love Life and also their first Top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 23 on May 12, 1984. The classic video – with its fabulous Bonnie & Clyde-themed video and big shoot-‘em-up ending – still holds up.

2. “Masquerade” – Mygodmygodmygod. It STILL gives me chills. I feel like weeping for my lost youth whenever I hear this. Dancing at the Copa in Ft Lauderdale every night. Listening to it on my Walkman. Sigh. Perfect song is perfect, as they say.

1. “Sex (I’m A)” – WOW. Still packs a wallop. I remember playing it for my friends, giggling and feeling oh-so dirty.”I’m a man, I’m a boy, I’m your mother, I’m a one-night stand, Am I bi?, I’m your slave, I’m a little girl, when we make love together…” Try getting away with lyrics like THAT today!

Said Terri of the BEYOND ICONIC dance song: “I wrote the song because I was in a relationship where we were at a crossroads, sexually. It wasn’t exciting. It wasn’t bad, but we were kind of bored, just going through the paces. I came in one day and said, “Well, why don’t we try role playing? I could be a damsel in distress, and you could be a pirate.” And he said, “Terri, I don’t want to do that. I’m not a burglar; I’m not a vampire; I’m just a guy.” I was like, “OK.” (laughs) So I wrote this song as a kind of slap in his face: “I’m this, I’m that, I’m a geisha, I’m a little girl, I’m a dream divine – and you’re just a guy.” And that’s what the guy sings through the whole song: “I’m a man.” Because that’s all he wanted to be.”

So come see Terri at Drag Con next month and tell her how much she is appreciated, and how much she has given to the world. Whatta WOMAN.

Seth Meyers’ Take on the Memories Pizza Controversy

You know the story: A pizzeria in Indiana has made a name for itself by refusing to cater gay weddings (obvious joke: What self-respecting gay would have pizza at a wedding?). And although people were outraged by their obvious homophobia and bigotry, a GoFundMe page was set up on their behalf which has so far raised over $800,000. Seth Meyers took a look at the “dicks on both sides” of the Memories Pizza debate and questioned fundraiser for the anti-gay business.

“Seriously, this is the kind of cause people will donate to? You can save rescue dogs, save the rainforest, save the whales, you decide to save the pizza? Or you anti-gay or just stoned?”

In case you haven’t seen it yet, “Sez Me” is a fabulous new web series that aims for viewers to see young people interacting with members of the LGBT community in a fun, casual setting.

“We wanted to break the stigma around this idea that it is inappropriate for children to be exposed to such ‘lifestyles,'” drag queen Charmin Ultra told The Huffington Post.

Watch the fourth episode, below, entitled “CATS ON ICE,” which tackles the issue of gender neutrality. In it, we meet Ezra, an 8-year-old who uses the pronouns they/them and who contacted the show after seeing the its PGP (“preferred gender pronoun”) segment. (via HuffPo)

It really is unlike anything you’ve ever seen before.
