Watch This: The SAMSARA Food Sequence Showing

Absolutely mesmerizing footage of how we get the food we eat. From a poultry processing plant in China to a “humane” US dairy factory, I guarantee you will never again see anything quite as heartbreakingly beautiful and life-alteringly disturbing as this clip.

The sobering six-minute footage is from the movie SAMSARA, (which means ”continuous flow” to Hindus and Buddhists). From IMDB: “Filmed over nearly five years in twenty-five countries on five continents, and shot on seventy-millimetre film, Samsara transports us to the varied worlds of sacred grounds, disaster zones, industrial complexes, and natural wonders.” Feels very Koyaanisqatsi to me, but then I’m old.

Lady Gaga came out with a new video today for her single G.U.Y. (a song about bottoming) watch now & read my IN DEPTH analysis!

Lady Gaga‘s new music video for her new single G.U.Y. was released today.  The ACTUAL music video for G.U.Y. doesn’t start until 3:23 into the video, so feel free to skip ahead. There’s literally 3 of her OTHER songs in this video as well. Let me break it down real quick.

G.U.Y. stars Lady Gaga:

And features the cast of Real Housewives (dressed in pink and playing instruments, hello!): Real Housewives Miley Cyrus Laganja Estranja Lady Gaga G.U.Y. Music Video Andy Cohen

And wowlebrity Andy Cohen(‘s HEAD!):

The music video is basically about Lady Gaga (with the help of the Housewives) destroying average looking men and cloning a whole bunch of hot bottoms with the blood of Gandhi, Jesus, and Michael Jackson, and releasing said hot bottoms into the world. Thanks boo! Real Housewives Miley Cyrus Laganja Estranja Lady Gaga G.U.Y. Music Video Andy Cohen Real Housewives Miley Cyrus Laganja Estranja Lady Gaga G.U.Y. One last thing, because my mind will always go to Miley Cyrus, I got a very “We Can’t Stop” vibe when Gaga was rolling around on the bed…

Just me? Okay…. Well enjoy the video, ladies and gents! And keep in mind, the credits are longer than the video! They’re actually longer than a full length movie! But that doesn’t take away from the ART! SO…. ENJOY!

Watch Now: Wes Anderson, Centered

I’m dying to see The Grand Budapest Hotel. Wes Anderson is one of my favorite directors. He can be polarizing – people either love him or hate him. But you can’t say his style isn’t his own. This video from an artist named Kogonada points out just how much he likes symmetrical framing. Almost everything he shoots can be cut right down the middle. It’s a fun watch, and goes a long way toward illustrating what makes his visual style so distinctive – and easy to parody.

Willie Nelson The Lone Star Café The Highline The Blues Brothers Schraffts Roy Orbison Pennsylvania Station Kinky Friedman James Brown Hudson Yards Fredrik Eklund Douglas Elliman Clifton Chenier Asleep at the Wheel 61 Fifth Avenue

In 1946 there were 34 Schrafft’s in the New York metropolitan area. At the swanky, five-story Schrafft’s at Fifth & 46th St. the hostesses wore long gowns, but gentility in the first half of the 20th century had its dark side. Schrafft’s discouraged African-American patrons, who would be seated politely without comment and then ignored by the wait staff, so it’s hard to idealize this time too much – not everyone was having fun. But Schrafft’s was one of the first restaurant chains to hire women managers and most of the cooks were women. The restaurant at 61 Fifth Avenue, which opened in 1938, had a curved facade with windows and a two-level interior decorated with murals. Scrafft’s continued to flourish through the 60s and but steadily declined through the 70s and eventually disappeared.

Willie Nelson The Lone Star Café The Highline The Blues Brothers Schraffts Roy Orbison Pennsylvania Station Kinky Friedman James Brown Hudson Yards Fredrik Eklund Douglas Elliman Clifton Chenier Asleep at the Wheel 61 Fifth Avenue In that same building, The Lone Star Cafe opened a club that operated from 1976 to 1989. I came to New York in 1980 and I remember it but being from Texas and having just escaped, I wasn’t interested in a Texas-themed café. But it was popular for a time and everyone played there; Willie Nelson, Kinky Friedman, Roy Orbison, The Blues Brothers, Clifton Chenier and James Brown, who recorded a live album there in 1985. Words from a Billy Joe Shaver song hung on a banner out front: “Too Much Ain’t Enough.” The roof sported a huge 40-foot sculpture of a giant iguana which made the spot memorable, but neighboring businesses did not appreciate it and after a court battle, it was removed.

After The Lone Star closed, for years, a deli operated out of that space and Schrafft’s beautiful interior and the sound of twangy country music was a distant echo of the past. The lot was eventually sold, in the 21st century and that beautiful building, which should have been landmarked, was torn down to make way for just 4 luxury condos. Wowlebrity and Elliman broker Fredrik Eklund eventually sold these units that ranged from $28.5 million for the penthouse to $12.975 million for one of the duplexes, making the total “sellout value” around $70 million. (That’s a lot of milk shakes and grilled cheese sandwiches!)

This seems to be the history of New York of late – but it’s been going on for a hundred + years. I didn’t go back before Schrafft’s but something was there before and people probably bitched when they built Schrafft’s as some “ugly, modern monstrosity”. Everyone seems to constantly complain about “old New York disappearing” – but does anyone REALLY expect real estate owners to ignore insane profits or for the city to be frozen in time by some sympathetic mayor? Let’s hope for every sad loss of a great landmark, there are more happy newcomers like The Highline park, Hudson Yards and new performance venues coming out of long-neglected spaces. New York City is renewing itself constantly and will continue to do so long after we’re gone. (And if predictions come true and the sea level rises 20 feet, it’ll be Venice, anyway) However, I DO wish Penn Station was still around.

On Fame, Glamour, and the Sad Death of L’Wren Scott: A WOW Report Email Discussion

$

In a flurry of late-night emails, Fenton and I muse on the nature of fame and its impact on the recently deceased L’Wren Scott.

suicide Money Success Fame Glamor Longer Reads LWren Scott celebrity death

FENTON: (sending a link to L’Wren Scott’s Death Reveals Tragic Side of City’s Glitzy Scene in the New York Post) maybe too late [for the Longer Reads section] for today but wld love your thoughts on this in the wow report

JAMES:  Yeah sorry. I was traveling all day, didn’t have time to include it. Weird that her death affected me the way it did. Never gave her much thought, but it seems very sad. The way she did it (with her scarf? from a doorknob?) then calling her assistant to come find the body… Too upsetting. she seemed so glamorous, like she had such a great life. You never really know anything about anyone, though, do you? It’s all just veils and masks on lies and illusion. Nobody ever “makes it” and lives happily ever after, do they? Sigh. Glamour is just a facade.

FENTON: Ru once said “glamour is where you’re not”. truer words were never spoke. and so you cant help wonder if as a society we have made a terrible mistake. it’s a given that celebrity makes everyone who’s not famous somewhat unhappy. but if it drives those with glamorous lives to suicide, well, whose benefittimg? we seem to have created a social model that makes everyone dissatisfied, isolated and unhappy.  madness.

JAMES:  Madness. Here’s the thing about glamour that nobody understands: It doesn’t exist within you. It’s not part of you, and it’s not something you can manifest (like style or charisma). It can only be projected on to you by someone else. Glamour is just a way of seeing something. So to everyone in the world you can BE a glamorous person and HAVE a glamorous life, but unfortunately YOU never get to experience it. And that leads to a growing disconnect between perception/reality. You feel like a fraud. L’Wren could have been on the cover of Vogue, but she knew the reality of her split ends, and the Planter’s wart on her foot and the fact that her rockstar boyfriend farts on her  in his sleep (or whatever her secret shame was). She couldn’t accept that people thought she was glamorous because she didn’t feel it. And when that happens you can’t accept compliments and you don’t believe the positive reviews for your show, and all your success starts to put you in a shame spiral. I’m just spitballing here, of course, but it’s a working theory.

FENTON: Maybe kids would be less obsessed with being famous if they taught this stuff in high school.

JAMES: Right? Fame for Beginners. Remedial Red Carpet. Celebrity Civics. Applied Superstardom. Social Networking for the Newly Famous. Interview Speak as a Second Language. I could go on all night. I know: WE’LL OPEN THE WOW SCHOOL OF CELEBRITY AND MAKE A FORTUNE! And….. Goodnight!

FENTON: ‘night. :-)
