Stevie Phillips has waited over 45 years after Judy Garland‘s death to write a memoir filled with shocking revelations about the troubled star. Judy’s one-time agent held little back. In Judy & Liza & Robert & Freddie & David & Sue are that Garland got off by having lesbian sex during limo rides to her concerts. Phillips says that during one ride, Judy had her hand on her agent’s knee;
“…her hand was now fully in my crotch and she was staring straight ahead. Then she turn and smiled. In an instant my body turned rigid and I stopped breathing while every possible weak-kneed simpering response like, ‘I don’t thing so.’ “‘Please! Not my thing.’ ‘I wish you wouldn’t” -collided in my head.
I mustered all the courage I had and turned in her direction. Take another breath and say something, I commanded myself. Nothing would come out.”
She continued to represent Judy for four more years, saying she was…
“a demented, demanding, supremely talented drug addict.”
‘I will show you a woman whose mind was destroyed by prescription drugs and alcohol.”
Phillips details an incident at The Plaza in New York where Garland set her nightgown on fire;
“Every possible terror collides in me at once as I grab the blankets and smother the flame about to consume the pale-blue nylon gown.
After the fire was out, Garland examined a burn on her leg and said ‘I better wear tights.'”
Between acts of one of her concerts the Boston Garden that same year, Phillips writes that Garland suddenly slit her left wrist and the surging blood spewed all over Phillips’ clothes…
“My hands. My hair. I stood there horrified. This was her normal. This is who she was.”
A doctor came in, Garland was bandaged up, bracelets were bought to cover the bandages. Phillips writes that the incidents were about manipulation and control.
“No one wanted to institutionalize her because they were busy exploiting her.”
After she left Garland, Phillips became an agent at Creative Management Associates and guess who her first client was? Liza Minnelli. More dirt there too. I might have to read this book now! It’s available on Amazon tomorrow. (via The Daily Mail)
