The Lost (& Found) Generation: Viral Poetry Has Three Plot Twists!

$

Derek Nichols (if that IS your real name?) decided to post a poem written by his younger brother, Jordan, who seems wise beyond his 14 years. Since it was posted on Wednesday, it has gone viral, as they say, BIG TIME.

Here’s the transcript of the poem:

Our Generation
“Our generation will be known for nothing.
Never will anybody say,
We were the peak of mankind.
That is wrong, the truth is
Our generation was a failure.
Thinking that
We actually succeeded
Is a waste. And we know
Living only for money and power
Is the way to go.
Being loving, respectful, and kind
Is a dumb thing to do.
Forgetting about that time,
Will not be easy, but we will try.
Changing our world for the better
Is something we never did.
Giving up
Was how we handled our problems.
Working hard
Was a joke.
We knew that
People thought we couldn’t come back
That might be true,
Unless we turn things around”

OK, ready for a plot twist? Now read it backwards, from bottom to top. Alright I’ll help you, just read this below, which the is the above in reverse.

“Unless we turn things around
That might be true,
People thought we couldn’t come back
We knew that
Was a joke.
Working hard
Was how we handled our problems.
Giving up
Is something we never did.
Changing our world for the better
Will not be easy, but we will try.
Forgetting about that time,
Is a dumb thing to do.
Being loving, respectful, and kind
Is the way to go.

Living only for money and power
Is a waste. And we know
We actually succeeded
Thinking that
Our generation was a failure.
That is wrong, the truth is
We were the peak of mankind.
Never will anybody say,
Our generation will be known for nothing.”

Amazing, right? This kid is BRILLIANT. Lots of people thought so. It was reposted and commented on and praised to the heavens across the worldwide interweb. Love these feel-good stories, don’t you? Wow. Except that it appears Derek’s brother, Jordan, found a very similar poem online and “tweaked it” to make it his own. Read this poem from 2011 by Jonathan Reed and see what you think?

The Lost Generation
“I am part of a lost generation.
And I refuse to believe that
I can change the world.
I realize this may be a shock, but
“Happiness comes from within”
Is a lie, and
“Money will make me happy”
So in thirty years, I will tell my children
They are not the most important thing in my life.
My employer will know that
I have my priorities straight because
Work
Is more important than
Family
I tell you this:
Once upon a time
Families stayed together
But this will not be true in my era.
This is a quick fix society
Experts tell me
Thirty years from now, I will be celebrating the tenth anniversary of my divorce.
I do not concede that
I will live in a country of my own making.
In the future,
Environmental destruction will be the norm.
No longer can it be said that
My peers and I care about this Earth.
It will be evident that
My generation is apathetic and lethargic.
It is foolish to presume that
There is hope.
And all of this will come true unless we reverse it.”

And now you could read it this one in reverse too, but you can see this poetic palindrome is more than a little similar. I’m now waiting for someone to dig up a yellowed notepaper from 1952 with a similar poetic injustice. Beautiful poem, btw. I’m happy to read them both…

To me the third twist in this story, is that THIS story of Derek’s viral post, praise for originality, inspiration and then discovery of its origins reveals as much or more about our generation and the time we live in, than poetry. The internet is a warehouse of information and inspiration and also an empty vessel that’s already full of things to copy and/or be “inspired” by. We are so quick to judge from moment to moment that, even though the history of the world and its contents are at our Google-tips, we often lose sight of what’s real and what’s not. Draw your own conclusions, but I didn’t figure this out, I just connected the dots and painted in the numbers, using mass communication that’s at my fingertips.

Trey Speegle paintball by number Converge Gallery Casey Gleghorn Art Trey Speegle paintball by number Converge Gallery Casey Gleghorn Art Trey Speegle paintball by number Converge Gallery Casey Gleghorn Art So, last night, I had an opening at Converge Gallery in Williamsport, Pennsylvania called “Very Much So”. In addition to the work in the show, which has a 1940s-era storefront window, I installed a my work translated into to rugs, plates along with wallpaper that had been blasted with a paintball gun. I had the idea to shoot my prints with a paintball gun and the gallery was crazy enough to go along with it. They built a special booth in the space covered in plastic, which I thought was overkill art first, until later in the night when I was cleaning paint splatters off my work 10 feet away. So first, you pick out the color paper you like, then choose your paint color (we had just two; fluorescent orange and bright yellow) and then take your five shots for $20. The money went to the local SPCA, so we were doing a bit of good and raised some cash for charity. It was Mardi Gras and the street in front was closed for a parade, which seemed to consist of a fires truck, some beer trucks and a few undecorated cars. We anticipated crowds of fun loving folks pouring in afterward but it turns out most people went straight into the bars. We had a decent-sized crowd of interested and fun participants though and there was a live feed with a group that almost went in the double-digits. After a brief “artist’s talk”, I put on a bright yellow jacket from Joe Fresh, that John Yogodzinski had screened printed with the vase. Casey Gleghorn shot me in the back. So, I think a good time was had by all. Next week, the Casey’s gallery gang and some of my work will be in Manhattan for the Scope art fair (March 6-9) so, stop by if you’re in town and tell them I sent you. Those festering turds from the Westboro Babtist Church hold signs outside the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, protesting “fag tinsel town,” and “fag enablers,” with signs saying  ”God Hates Dyke Ellen,” “Paul Walker in Hell,” and “Mandela in Hell.” It’s just so beyond bizarre that I find it hard to get upset about. It feels like Tourettes at this point. Mass Tourettes. (Photo: Pacific Coast News – click to enlarge)

Big Freedia’s Top 5 Mardi Gras Tips

Big Freedia (The Queen of Bounce, DUH!)  lists the top 5 ways to get turnt up at Mardi Gras! Read the insightful list after the jump.

1. This isn’t insider-y, but everyone must go to the Zulu Parade! It’s on Fat Tuesday and there’s so much build up to the big day and this is the parade to go to if you only go to one!

2. After the Zulu Parade, you have to go under the bridge to watch all the second line bands — the Mardi Gras Indians. What we refer to as “under the bridge” is actually not a bridge — it’s the I-10 Claiborne Overpass where crowds of people gather to continue celebrating. And “second line bands” are the people who follow behind the main parade bands dancing, singing, chanting, and basically just having a good time! And as for “Mardi Gras Indians,” those are people who dress in Native American tribal costumes. Some say the costuming is in honor of the alliance between African-Americans and Native-Americans that helped slaves from New Orleans escape to freedom. It’s a very important part of Mardi Gras culture and you can see it in all the parades here.

3. Every block/neighborhood has DJs who hold block parties — I call them Hood DJs. You can go to the 6th Ward or the 7th Ward, wherever. You really get a feel for the local neighborhoods by going to the different block parties.

4. When you’re ready to hit up a bar, Republic is a great place to go for a drink and some entertainment.

Head over to Paper Mag to read the 5th and final tip from Big Freeida to make your Mardi Gras extraordinary!

Remember when Lindsay Lohan got out of rehab late last year, and Oprah decided to give LiLo a reality show on her OWN network?

Well now that show has a name and an air date! The show simply titled Lindsayis said to be an “honest, no-holds-barred account” of the actress trying to regain control of her life after rehab, her legal troubles, and her career bottomed out. But of course, filming didn’t go as smoothly as planned. This is Lindsay Lohan after all. According to a production source, “she never does what she says she is going to do. She cancels all the time and is highly erratic.” Oprah even said in a clip of the show screened for TV critics in January that, “this is just what everyone warned me would happen [working with her].” Lindsay premieres on March 9 at 10PM on the OWN network.

Michelle Rodriguez hot chicks guess who? Girlfriends Cara Delevingne

Why, it’s Michelle Rodriguez, which seems a bit odd. If you’re like me, your first thought was: “Why on earth is she doing that? She’s not THAT famous!” But then, of course, we’d be forgetting that it’s Fashion Week in Paris right now, and Michelle is currently (allegedly) dating fashion meteor Cara Delevingne and suddenly it makes sense. Michelle – prickly, moody, super-defensive Michelle – is feeling piled on by the press and is trying to move about the city incognito. But, REALLY, is this the way to do it?  Obscuring your face is a sure-fire way to get people to stare at your face, duh. Every drag queen in a picture hat and veil knows that. Music Video of the Day: Matt Goss Croons “I Do”

’80s boybander Matt Goss (of UK sensation Bros) reinvents himself as a silky-smooth Vegas lounge singer and OH you’re just going to melt.

Remember Bros? “WHEN… WILL I… WILL I BE FAMOUS?” My theme song for much of the ’80s. Twins Matt and Luke Goss were IT. Such dreamboats. Pretty and blond, you know how I like ‘em. Bros charted 13 times in the UK before breaking up in the early ’90s. Luke went on to have a semi-successful acting career, starring in Hellboy II, Blade II, and an American TV show last year called Red Widow, that I was its only viewer.

Now Matt’s gone and reinvented himself as a suave-as-fuck Las Vegas crooner and WOW. He’s lost none of his charm, none of his talent, and none of those achingly good looks. In fact, he might even be more handsome now than he was 25 years ago, how many people can claim THAT?

Says the PR release for this song:

Luke Goss is a man’s man, a lady killer, and a consummate entertainer. He became a household name in the UK as a performer in his teens and has since matured into a  headliner with his own residency at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. The debonair Brit is now on the verge of making his name known stateside with the 2014 release of Life You Imagine on Virgin Records. The album was produced by Ron Fair over a meticulous recording process of two years with a degree of musicianship rarely seen these days. In fact, Billboard Magazine describes the project as “a mix of big band swing and contemporary-sounding soul that pays respectful homage to the Rat Pack era.”

“I want my music to sound big. I’m inspired by Queen and Sinatra, Elvis and Bowie because there was never anything understated about their music,” says Matt. “I want to create as much energy, glamour, and drama as I can.”

Swoon. That VOICE.

Watch “I do,” then stroll down memory lane and watch “When Will I be Famous” just for old time sake.

tune for today reinventing yourself Matt Goss hot guys Bros British pop stars 80s nostalgia 80s icons
