Venus Over Manhattan Maurizio Cattelan conceptual Art

Conceptual artist Maurizio Cattelan has officially retired as an artist, so this exhibit at Venus Over Manhattan isn’t new work but it’s a tantalizing way to present a show. I can’t explain any of it to you –just watch and you be the peeping Tom, Judge Judy and see what it means to you. The exhibit is up at 980 Madison Avenue in New York through January 10, 2015.

Disco Flashback: Ginger Rogers Boogies Down in Bizarre Rendition of “Love Will Keep Us Together”

What the what? Batshit insane choreography by the king of schmaltzy ’70s variety show choreography Ronnie Lewis, bizarre performances by the dancers, and Ginger Rogers evidently gunning for a career comeback. Be sure to watch the mustachioed dancer who is giving just a little bit more than the other three. And… Is that Nigel Lithgow? This is why the ’70s RULED.

Favorite YouTube comment: “With their amazing moves, I bet those guys got ALL the girls!”

Coldplay frontman Chris Martin sings an original song from the Angelina Jolie film Unbroken (as well as his own hit “Viva la Vida”), before bringing super-yummy Garrett Hedlund up to sing “White Christmas.” Garret doesn’t get there until around the 10:00 mark, but check out Martin’s smooth banter at the beginning of the video, and remember why you fell in love with him in the first place. The man is charm incarnate.

Trey Parker Scott Wittman Matt Stone Marc Shaiman Hairspray Bigger Longer Harder

You know Marc Shaiman, yes? The genius score writer for Hairspray, SMASH, who brought us the music of South Park: Bigger Longer and Uncut among other genius pop culture moments at the Tony’s and The Oscars (nominated for 5 himself) and on and on. He’s an old friend and he just posted this on Facebook;

“Oh my, what the internet can bring. I went looking for the version of The Dreidel Song that I did with the original HAIRSPRAY cast (which I had originally done with Matt & Trey for the – kind of fell in the cracks but awfully awesome – South Park Xmas CD). And this is what came up first on Google. Whoever cut together this video must be commended (and then promptly committed.) HAPPY HANUKKAH!”

Yes, please don’t get offended – or you know what? DO, if you are intent on being offended, go right ahead but it’s not the intent of Marc or myself. Watch it before Disney catches on… Happy Holidays!

The Political Line: Keith Haring At The de Young Museum

The Political Line The deYoung Museum Keith Haring artists Art Andy Warhol

I wrote about this show when it first opened in November, but last Sunday, I was in San Francisco for a show I was in at the Bedford Gallery and went to see it. First of all, the museum itself, situated in Golden Gate Park, is architecturally unique and beautiful, in a brutalist Whitney sort of way. The café (which has a great menu faces a serene sculpture garden)

Seeing your late friend’s big museum show is weird, exciting, impressive, sad, inspiring… a whole range of thoughts and feelings came over me. I tend to go through a show pretty quickly and then go back through the galleries two more times. You can see here, it’s a big show and I’ve only included maybe a quarter of the work. One of the things I realized while looking at this huge body of varied work was that Keith had really mastered many levels making art. He was talented, no doubt and like his idol and friend, Andy Warhol, he could really draw. He was an accomplished draftsman and he instinctively understood color and form. He had ideas he could articulate visually, and among other things he knew exactly how to present a piece so it had “wall appeal”. Not a lot of artists of our generation know how to to do that at quite the level he did. Finally, he was ambitious and wanted to be known. He stood in front of his work and knew that if HE was famous, his work would be seen. Fame is a LOT of real work and also like Andy, he came from a working class background and wasn’t afraid to actually get his hands dirty. But like a ballet dancer, he made it all looks effortless and included the viewer in the process. In shooting these pictures, I also included people looking at the work and I snapped of a young man that, at the time, I barely clocked in my peripheral vision. But looking back now, in the next to the last shot, you can see he looks an awful lot like a sweet boy named Keith that I met a long time ago. The day the show closes would have been Keith’s 57th birthday. If look at the last image, you’ll see a guy who made quite an impact in just one decade –and he continues to inspire and provoke thought. Good job, Keith.

Why Aliens Exist

“First, try not to think about what alien life might be like. Then wonder whether we have any chance of finding it.” Why Aliens Probably Exist examines the possibility of alien life elsewhere in the galaxy, saying that the Milky Way‘s 13.2 billion-year age should be more than enough time for a technologically advanced civilization to spread out across the galaxy.

That means we should see signs of alien life everywhere, but the video also explains that alien life might not look like anything we can imagine, concluding that there may be alien life throughout the galaxy, but we just don’t recognize it as life. (via Laughing Squid)

Billionaire space enthusiast Elon Musk describes his belief in multiplanetary human colonies and how his new space toy, SpaceX, can achieve it. “The dream of a road to Mars is taking shape and it is indeed a beautiful dream,” he says. “It’s the next step in human evolution.” We need more visionaries like him, don’t you think? Watch the video after the jump.

Yeah, I’d do him.

Neri Oxman, a designer and professor at MIT’s Media Lab, and her students partnered with 3D printing company Stratasys and the computational design duo Deskriptiv to build four super-fab wearable skins that serve as bio-augmented space suits to help sustain life on planets with hostile environments. Because life on Mercury, Jupiter, or Saturn requires more than just a standard spacesuit, of course, and these looks to look for are JUST THE TICKET.

“Some are designed to photosynthesize, converting daylight into energy, others bio-mineralize to strengthen and augment human bone,” Oxman explains. In doing so, they offer a wild glimpse of a future in which the barriers between biology and technology have fallen away.

Mushtari, designed for life on the moons of Jupiter, is an external digestive tract that fits around the stomach. Oxman designed the organ system to digest biomass, absorb nutrients and expel waste. Humans would be able to convert daylight into consumable sucrose via photosynthetic bacteria that flows through the translucent 3-D printed tracts. “Imagine exposing yourself to the sun, generating sugar cubes in your pockets,” she says. As you move, the energy harvesting pockets digest the matter, creating an endless cycle of consumption and digestion.

Zuhal‘s thin, fibrous material is covered in a dense, hairy texture which contains a bacteria that can convert the hydrocarbons found on Saturn’s moon Titan into food for human. It works by converting hydrocarbons into safe edible matter.

The Otaared exoskeleton protects against Mercury’s lack of atmosphere by providing an antler-like exoskeleton that safeguards the head against impacts.

At this point, Wanderers is just design fiction. It’s a highly speculative solution to problems that can’t yet be solved in the real world. But it hints at a fascinating future where biology is synthesized for functionality that goes beyond what’s possible with traditional materials. Oxman says she and her students in the Mediated Matter group are currently developing 3-D printed microfluidic devices through which real living matter (for example, biologically engineered photosynthetic bacteria) can be pumped and manipulated.

It’s early days yet in the merging of synthetic biology and digital fabrication, but Oxman believes that eventually the field will enable an entirely new class of living materials that could be used in design and architecture—the capabilities of which could be both liberating and terrifying. “In the end,” says Oxman. “It’s clear that the incorporation of synthetic biology in product and architectural design will enable the transition from designs that are inspired by nature, to designs made with and by nature, to, possibly designing nature herself.”

Women’s Colleges Spark Controversy Admitting Transgender Students

Women’s colleges across the country are broadening their admissions policies to now include transgender students.  Some people are concerned that this could affect the “nature” of single-gender schools, or maybe they’re just pissed that this means stiffer competition. The debate is hot – with hundreds of Alums arguing that this is part of a “systematic erasure of the female identity of women’s colleges.” – whatever that means! But what about students who identify as men? Mills College in Oakland became the first last summer to adopt a written policy accepting transgender students. Scripps will start doing the same in 2016. Head over to the LA Times to read more.

LOL OTD: Cat with Human Body Has Dogs Over for Christmas Dinner

A very annoyed cat (with a human body) presides over a table of ill-mannered dogs (with human bodies) for a holiday meal. The dogs proceed to drink too much, argue, and steal food from each other’s plates – as dogs do. Funnier than it sounds, trust me.

Many of the animals at the dinner table are available for adoption through the Utah Humane Society and while they appear to be impolite in the video, they are good, well-behaved dogs who are just really good actors. (via Laughing Squid)

My name is Norihito Hatanaka and I create a fake food accessories. Normally, my factory creates ‘industrial art food models’ for display at restaurants. One day, I thought I wanted to create something interesting by using our expert technology of the craftsman.

I considered what should I create to expose the fake food to public view. And as I was interested in fashion, I decided to make accessories that have a food motif. I get inspired for my work from casual daily scenery. Easily available common food items are charming as they are, though people sometimes don’t notice that.
