St Patricks Day parade Samual Adams New York LGBT rights Heinken gay mercers equality for all Boston A second beer maker has withdrawn its sponsorship of a St. Patrick’s Day parade because of its refusal to allow gay and lesbians to march openly. Heineken said it would’t participate in New York’s upcoming St. Patrick’s Day celebration; “We believe in equality for all. We are no longer a sponsor of Monday’s parade.” Boston Beer, the parent company of Sam Adams, pulled out of Boston’s St. Patrick’s Day parade yesterday after a popular Boston bar said it would stop selling its products, “until such time as either the Parade organizers change their position, or Sam Adams removes its support of the St. Patrick Day Parade.” I gotta say I’m happy all around – besides Amstel Light & Corona, those are two of my favorite beers and I’ll remember this the next time I order one. Salut! (via CNBC)

At the gorgeous art deco Egyptian Theater in the heart of Hollywood, a cavalcade of celebrities showed for the premiere of  Alec Mapa‘s documentary Baby Daddy. The show is based on his shelarious one man show centered around the adoption of his son Zion. Walking the red carpet were gAy-listers (below) Jake Shears, Bruce Vilanch, Reichen Lehmkuhl (with friend), Frank DeCaro, AND JAMES ST. JAMES (OMG!) The show. was. EVERYTHING! Heart warming,  hysterical, thought provoking, and just… WONDERFUL! The takeaway? Alec’s SPOT ON impersonation of Bette Davis singing Party in the USA by Miley Cyrus!
Says Alec of the doc:

Three years ago my husband and I adopted a five year old African American boy out of the LA County foster care system. “Baby Daddy” is  an evening of stand up comedy that recounts our harrowing, circuitous journey to fatherhood in excruciating detail: How my husband and I learned about the foster adopt  system (A stint on a Rosie O’Donnell “R” Family Cruise) attending parenting classes in Los Angeles (mostly gay and lesbian prospective parents learning about baby proofing all our fountains and pools) and the ultimate game changer: meeting our son for the very first time and taking him home. Intercut with scenes from our home life and backstage footage, “Baby Daddy” goes beyond the standard stand up comedy special and documents the creation of our unconventional trio, and how ultimately love defines a family. ”Baby Daddy” was performed live in Los Angeles and New York City and won the prestigious Bistro award and was nominated for a GLAAD  and United Solo award for best off Broadway solo show.

Fred Phelps, founder of Westboro Baptist “Church”, Dying

Anti-gay jackass Fred Phelps, founder of the Westboro Baptist “Church” and “Gods Hate Fags” infamy, is near death according to a Facebook post Saturday night by his son Nathan Phelps, who left the church and his family’s compound in 1976 when he was 18. He writes:
I’ve learned that my father, Fred Phelps, Sr., pastor of the “God Hates Fags” Westboro Baptist Church, was ex-communicated from the “church” back in August of 2013. He is now on the edge of death at Midland Hospice house in Topeka, Kansas. I’m not sure how I feel about this. Terribly ironic that his devotion to his god ends this way. Destroyed by the monster he made. I feel sad for all the hurt he’s caused so many. I feel sad for those who will lose the grandfather and father they loved. And I’m bitterly angry that my family is blocking the family members who left from seeing him, and saying their good-byes.
Nathan was the 7th of thirteen children who have left Westboro. He has been a vocal LGBTQ advocate, and speaks out against the dangers of religion and child abuse. The sign his father is holding says, “FAGS DIE GOD LAUGHS” – wonder what his God will do when HE dies? (via LQBTQ Nation)Westboro Baptist Church Nathan Phelps LGBTQ rights hate speech Fred Phelps

Drivin’ It Home: But Where’s The Gas Go?

Winnebago RV retreat ESCAPE home escape Would you ever guess that this cozy cabin is actually an RV? It is. This ESCAPE home is no different than your dad’s Winnebego – but because of its RV status, you never have to pay property taxes on or do you have to bother with inspections or building permits. You could literally just find a piece of land and plop this sucker down. Instead of taking out a mortgage, you can actually finance it with a car loan. The structure itself is well-insulated and, according to the company, the pipes won’t freeze and your electric bill will be less than your cell phone costs. It only comes in a couple different models and base package is $79,000, without any hidden costs. You just pick out your model, add some accessories, and the home arrives in about three months. For upstate New York, The Catskills and Hudson Valley, this is ideal. Land in cheap and plentiful and you might be able to park it on your friend’s property if you let them use it as a guest house, when you aren’t there. Fred Phelps Sr Reportedly Near Death

Westboro Baptist Church Shirley Phelps Roper recently ailing near death Hate Fred Phelps

Malevolent hate monger Fred Phelps, the nefarious founder of the Westboro Baptist Church, is near death says his son, Nate Phelps.

Nate left the church in 1976 when he was 18 years olds and has since come out as an atheist, but he still keeps in touch with some of his extended family members, many of whom have also escaped from the church.

From his Facebook page:

The commenters on Facebook, predictably, are like a howling pack of hyenas feasting on a zebra carcass. “I hope your death is painful” and “Rot in Hell” seem to be the prevailing senitments. I don’t know, though. I’ve always felt that Fred was probably very damaged at a young age and was in desperate need of psychiatric care. I’ve always felt sorry for him and his followers. All that hate has to hurt.

Not that that should stop us from demonstrating at his funeral, of course.

And what will happen to the Westboro Baptist church after its founder’s death? Probably more of the same. From patheos:

“While I would like to say [the church] will disappear entirely, that’s unlikely, at least in the short term. My guess is that Fred Phelps, mostly due to his age (he’s 84), hasn’t been an integral part of the church’s activities for quite some time. Those responsibilities have long been delegated to other members of the church, mostly to daughter Shirley Phelps-Roper. But without the founding figurehead in place, we can at least hope Westboro becomes less relevant and eventually obsolete.”

Read more about his condition, and the reason he was excommunicated from his own church, at epochtimes.

Watch This: Blondie’s New York Trailer

A clip from Friday night’s Blondie documentary on the Smithsonian channel detailing the often-unheralded brilliance of Debbie’s lyrics and the flack she got in her early days for her overt sexuality.

From The Futon Critic:

Crime and blight in New York City were rampant in 1978. The arts scene, however, was expanding and thriving. It was a time when rich creativity and grinding poverty and drug abuse were hand in hand on the sidewalks of the Lower East side. Out of this unique and troubled time and place, emerged a legendary band and one of the best-selling albums of all time, Parallel Lines. Its music and lyrics celebrate and capture this vibrant and edgy chemistry.

At the time, the members of Blondie had two punk albums behind them and were establishing a name for themselves at the famed Lower East side club CBGB together with groundbreaking bands such as the Ramones, Television and Johnny Thunder. Then Chrysalis Records executive Terry Ellis saw them and spent a million dollars to buy out their recording contract. Needing his investment to pay off, he had to ensure that their next album was a hit. He brought in maverick Australian record producer Mike Chapman, who would help turn this crew of New York punks into world stars. The result, Parallel Lines, defined a time and place, and launched lead singer Debbie Harry into superstardom and as a fashion icon. BLONDIE’s NEW YORK is narrated by Kim Cattrall.
