I went with my friend Michael to look at windows last Saturday night. We started with cocktails at The King Cole Room at The St. Regis, with that incredible Maxfield Parrish mural (above) The hotel was decorated beautifully for the holidays and we hit Saks (very beautiful too, 20s-inspired look, with throngs of tourists and piped in music) then we strolled up Fifth. Tiffany had miniature windows of windows –very expertly crafted and sweet, Louis Vuitton’s were simple and graphic and by the time we got to Barney’s we were a bit late to see the live performers, which really make them literally come alive, I would imagine…

…but Bergdorf’s windows, as usual are BE-yond. Their mastermind, David Hoey, has been doing them for 20+ years now and I know him about as long, as we once worked together doing sets for Q2, Barry Diller’s upscale shopping network of the early 90s. Ancient history. He’s a real orchestrator. They are amazing and this year based on the arts; Literature, Fine Art, Film, Architecture, Performing Arts, etc… the best way to know what goes creating them is to watch the very entertaining documentary, Scatter My Ashes At Bergdorf’s. It’s the MOST mythic of all American department stores and with an ultra-light touch, Matthew Miele explores not just the glamour, but the passion and craziness behind the daily creation of this luxury legend. Here’s the trailer. Watch. And if you are in NYC, don’t miss these windows… but already know that.

Backstreet Boys Documentary To Be Release in January!

The Backstreet Boys doc Show ‘Em What You’re Made Of – chronicalling their 20+ year career – will be released on January 30, 2015 in theaters and VOD. In it, the “boys” take you to their home towns, show you old unseen footage, and much more. After the jump is the wobbly iPhone footage of the trailer taken on the BSB 2013 cruise.

Well, that was exciting.

20+ years, though? How is that possible? I remember the first time I saw them LIKE IT WAS YESTERDAY. I discovered them, you know. Yes, I’m responsible for their popularity. I was tripping balls in a hotel room in Berlin. The year was 1996. Suddenly, five angels appeared on the TV screen, and the world began melting around me. I was inside a kaleidoscope of love, boy bangs, and pooka shells. The video was “Quit Playing Games with My Heart,” which had been released in Sweden, Germany, Austria, and the Netherlands as sort of a trial run for the US. I knew it was gold. I know genius when I hear it. I raced out to a German record store and feebly hummed a few bars for the clerk. I then brought the cassingle back with me and played it everywhere I went for the next six months, nattering endlessly on about the prettiest GERMAN band I had ever seen (I didn’t know they were American at the time). So you see, I PLANTED THE SEED. I was the early adapter that got people talking. I’m responsable for their phenomenal success. So, you see, I have a vested interest in this movie. I’ll be at the movie theater, camped out in line the week before with my “You Can Thank Me Now, Nick Carter” tee-shirt.

Transformations New York: Muffinhead

New York (by way of LA) artist-and-nightlife personality Muffinhead is today’s guest on Transformations. Muffinhead was a complete surprise. I’d followed him forever on Instagram (since I saw that viral subway pic), but it never dawned on me he would be a STRAIGHT GUY. Color me GOBSMACKED. I just naturally assumed somebody that peculiar, that outlandish, THAT WACKY would be gay. But there you go. Never assume. Aaaaaaaanyway. Today’s makeover is a quickie. A little white pancake, some lips and cheeks, then into one of Muffin’s costumes. It’s not such a makeup tutorial as it is just getting to know someone with a different sense of aesthetics than yourself. I like it. And the outfit is AMAZEBALLS.

Aaaaaand, I will have an outfit for  NEXT year’s holiday party ALREADY TAKEN CARE OF! So smart.

Order yours here. (There’s also fun pumpkin suits for Halloween and shamrock suits for St Patrick’s day and little heart suits for Valentines day…. omg, I think I need ALL OF THEM!)

I Really Like That Yelawolf Song “Til It’s Gone”

Have you heard it?  “Til It’s Gone” by Yelawolf? Angry Southern rap, not usually my thing, but for some reason this just donkeypunches me in the gut every time I hear it. That relentless, driving beat. The plaintive hook. The message of being forced to take accountability for one’s actions. It’s really genius. Listening to the lyrics (and watching this video) makes me realize just how much of life I’ll never experience. How much I’ll never know. I’ll never be in that world. I’ll never hang with swamp thugs in the bayou. I’ll never be that tattooed guy in the wifebeater. And yet, I feel like I’m in his head. I feel the panic rising in his chest when he shoots the guy. I’m right there. I’m him. And that’s ART.

International Documentary Association Honors Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato

Randy Barbato and Fenton Bailey, the founding fathers of World of Wonder, will be honored with the Pioneer Award at the 30th annual International Documentary Association this Friday (December 5th). IDA came over to the World of Wonder headquarters to talk with WOW’s main men about their “nonfiction empire” which includes their history, the wowlebrities they document, and how they celebrate the underbelly of gay culture. Click over to read a snippet of the interview, then head over to IDA for the full scoop!

Read the full interview on IDA.

You met at NYU Film School; were you originally interested in narrative filmmaking rather than documentary?

Randy Barbato: Yes, narrative was the thing we wanted to do. We went to NYU and were attracted to doing narrative, but were busy documenting what was going on, because we were living in the East Village in the ’80s. So we were kind of studying one thing and doing something else, although for us it’s kind of all the same thing—it’s all storytelling.

While we were at NYU we probably spent as much time at the Pyramid in happy hour as we did in classes.

Fenton Bailey: There was this sort of drag and arts scene the likes of which we had never seen before. And it was just happening around you.

Tammy Faye Bakker Sarah Ferguson RuPauls Drag Race RuPaul Randy Barbato Party Monster Monica Lewinski Michael Alig International Documentary Association IDA Heidi Fleiss Fenton Bailey Chaz Bono Becoming Chaz

You have celebrated the underbelly of gay culture with Drag Race and Drag U.

FB: There was never something extraordinary about it; it was just innocent in that we thought, there’s so much talent here. Drag is something that is perfect [for the medium]; drag belongs on TV.

We just did an exhibition of Matthu Andersen’s self-portraits, and he has said that drag in a way is an extension of social media, in the sense that people brand themselves, and you can be whoever you want to be, and you create a look and an outfit and a persona for yourself—whether or not you are putting on an outrageous wig or editing the frame of the picture you are in, it’s all about presenting yourself as an extension of who you are, rather than just who you are. So everybody is really self-producing themselves.

With Party Monster, you foreshadowed the whole phenomenon of branding and monetizing fame. The Club Kids were years before reality TV and the Kardashian phenomenon. They used the camera as validation, transforming nonentities into celebrities.

FB: The particular genius of Michael Alig and the Club Kids was that they were foreshadowing this social media era, where everyone is their own celebrity and their own brand, and it’s all about selfies. They were so ahead of it. In many ways I think that’s what the New York downtown club scene was like. We were watching these Nelson [Sullivan] tapes yesterday, and it was like Facebook, the real-life version. Everyone would put on their outfit and go to the club, and talk to each other and banter with each other and do status updates back and forth! And take pictures!

The people you have documented—Tammy Faye Bakker, Monica Lewinski, Heidi Fleiss, RuPaul, Chaz Bono, Michael Alig, Sarah Ferguson, to name a few—seem to have been ridiculed or scorned at one point in their lives. What else do they have in common?

FB: The commonality is that, whether they were born that way, or circumstances forced them to be that way, they are all people who lived their life out loud. This is, I suppose, using the metaphor of the closet in a broad general sense: rather than hiding in themselves away—these people aren’t gay necessarily—they live their life out loud without apology, without editing themselves, without trying to constrain themselves into what society expects or what society considers normal or acceptable.

Guardians of the Galaxy Groot Christmas Trees

Freelance artist Wolfen Moondaughter was tired of having the same old snoozy Christmas angel  every year, so she created this custom-made Groot tree-topper that transformed her ordinary Christmas tree into a thing of Grooty. Moondaughter completed the tree by making a custom Rocket Raccoon plush to hang from Groot’s fir-y shoulder. More photos of her Guardians of the Galaxy-themed tree available to view on Flickr and deviantART. (via Laughing Squid)

New York nightlife Lisa Edelstein Girlfriends Guide to Divorce Emmy magazine

The Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce star opens up about her secret clubland past, early career missteps (remember that MTV morning VJ gig?), and life after House. After the jump.

On being an “it-girl” in the NY club scene:

I found a community of people who were exciting, weird, who didn’t fit in but were extraordinarily talented. It was this vital microcosm, heavily Warhol influenced – he was still around. And it was great for a young person because people were pushing the envelope. [Ultimately though...] this small amount of fame-for-no-reason showed me very quickly that fame is not a good goal.

On why her gig as an MTV VJ only lasted 7 months:

The idea of being a host and saying ‘This one percent of my personality is me,’ is not what I like to do. Ryan Seacrest is amazing at it. I just came off like an idiot.
