#TheInternetIsPissed: Nicki Minaj’s “Only” Is Sound & Fury, Signifying Nothing

Rhythm Nation 1814 Only Nicki Minaj Nazi imagery Janet Jackson facist Drake Controversy Chris Brown

NSFW: The lyric video for Only, Nicki Minaj’s new single featuring Drake, Chris Brown and Lil Wayne, includes visual elements that everyone with eyes thinks are a bit like a Nazi rally, particularly its color scheme and Young Money logo. In the animated video, Minaj plays a dictator who sits on a throne before thousands of uniformed soldiers. Everyone is upset by the fascist overtones, to say nothing of the nastiest lyrics I’ve ever read in gigantic block letters. This made me flash on Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation video, which just turned 25, which also uses military garb, is black and white and has a black woman as it’s star, but that’s where the similarities end. The spoken word goes;

“We are a nation with no geographic boundaries, bound together through our beliefs. We are like-minded individuals, sharing a common vision, pushing toward a world rid of color-lines.”

At the time, Miss Jackson had this to say about her idea;

“I thought it would be great if we could create our own nation… one that would have a positive message and that everyone would be free to join.”

OK, maybe not an earth-shattering concept but there was an idea here to the song and video which Janet articulates. By contrast, Nincky Minaj said this about the video of her song with HER name on it on Twitter;

“The artist who made the lyric video for ‘Only’ was influenced by a cartoon on Cartoon Network called ‘Metalocalypse’ & Sin City. I didn’t come up w/ the concept but I’m very sorry & take full responsibility if it has offended anyone. I’d never condone Nazism in my art.”

There’s SO much wrong with this, the least of which is Nazi imagery. It wasn’t her idea? How about there IS no idea here. I’m not interested in the media’s response on Twitter bashing here but the worst is, IT’S BAD there IS no idea to begin with. The director refuses to apologize or say what it’s about. (Mostly f*cking, it seems?) There are lots ways to reference the world, but if you implement them with NO IDEAS, it’s just pop culture in a blender, kids and you get a murky good that is crap. Let’s go back 500 years or so to to sum up, shall we;

“It is a tale. Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury. Signifying nothing.” –William Shakespeare, Macbeth

Type/Face Fonts Dyslexie dyslexia Comic Sans

COMIC SANS
The easiest way to piss off art directors is to use Comic Sans for every email, message, and homemade birthday card you send them. Graphic designers hate the font, but the rest of the world still seems to like its whimsy, which is what inspired artist Jesse England to hack a typewriter with typeface. A laser engraver was used to create a new set of Comic Sans letters out of acrylic, which were then painstakingly glued onto the strikers of a classic old manual typewriter. Jessie even labeled the keys with a vinyl cutter to make custom key covers. But Jessie didn’t actually create the Sincerity Machine —as he’s dubbed it— to drive people nuts. People without graphic design skills (or taste) use it to ensure a message isn’t taken too seriously. It’s still ugly. Sorry.

Type/Face Fonts Dyslexie dyslexia Comic Sans

DYSLEXIE
Dutch designer Christian Boer created this dyslexic-friendly font to make reading easier for dyslexics like himself. He writes;

“Traditional fonts are designed solely from an aesthetic point of view, which means they often have characteristics that make characters difficult to recognize for people with dyslexia. Oftentimes, the letters of a word are confused, turned around or jumbled up because they look too similar.”

Designed to make reading clearer and more enjoyable for dyslexics, it uses “heavy base lines, alternating stick and tail lengths, larger openings, and semi cursive slants” so that each character has a more easily recognizable, unique form. Boer has recently made it available for home users to download for free. Once installed, dyslexic readers can use the font to type, print documents, read email, or browse the Web. Boer says that studies from the University of Twente and the University of Amsterdam support his claim that Dyslexie helps both children and adults with dyslexia to read with fewer errors. I’m not dyslexic but I still prefer it to Comic Sans.

Then later that evening, after the show: Jennifer again starts to make a mad dash to her waiting car, but goes back to sign some autographs.You then see her quickly freaking out and bolting from the scene. World of Wonder Co-Founder Fenton Bailey says “Mathu’s self-portraits take the selfie to new heights. They crash through the vanity of social media to create works that challenge our idea of beauty.” Adds co-founder Randy Barbato: “We are so proud at the World of Wonder Storefront Galley to exhibit Mathu Andersen’s first solo show. Mathu has been selfless in sharing himself with his fans on social media. We believe these portraits deserve an up-close look in person.”

Mathu describes his Instagram work as “my odd interior world of light and shadow, gods and monsters, A place where villains are sympathetic and the heroes are idiots.”  On choosing photos for the exhibit, Mathu says “After a couple of days of unbecoming petulant behavior, I settled for a mix of images that were popular and images that were personal and particular to me. I did wonder how the images would work outside of the context of Instagram. Hopefully, I have chosen well.”

A handful Mathu’s photographs that will be featured in the exhibit have already been sold to excited buyers. After Thursday night’s reception, the gallery will be open by appointment only. Call 323-603-6300 for inquires.

From a piece about Mathu in The Advocate:

Eschewing the label of a drag queen or performer, Andersen points out that his transformations do more than subvert gender; they also challenge the boundaries set by age, class, and even species.

“For years, I felt like I was playing at being a human,” he says. “I’m 50, and that’s interesting in the way I look and the way I can present myself transcends so many aspects… It’s really about completely breaking away from the labels.”

Stepping back, he now sees these figures as not self-portraits, but as “friends or people I know. They’re not me — they’re aspects of me,” which have taken on their own lives after being shared online. “You’re the origin, but it’s no longer just you,” he says.

Rather than other forms of social media like the text-heavy Twitter, Instagram offers Andersen an ideal medium for his visually based profession and mind. Followers and online fame aside, he has found value in Instagram as a “sketch pad” that offers a freedom to explore and grow that is sometimes not available when working for a client in the real world. In this online workshop, he can experiment with different makeup or styling techniques, and document the fascinating in-between stages of transformation.

Tune for Today: “Sue (Or in a Season of Crime” by David Bowie

Creepy new song from David Bowie – “Sue (Or in a Season of Crime)”  – probably the best thing he’s done in 35 years. It feels like a jittery jazz score from a ’60s neo-noir movie. Very lush, but very… tense. The video, directed by Tom Hingston and Jimmy King, was filmed in London and New York, and features Bowie and the Maria Schneider Orchestra recording the track in the studio, superimposed over a dark, smoke-filled city.

From Rolling Stone:

Over a track cut with bustling percussion and horns that warble and wail, Bowie bellows the tale of a husband and wife whose mundane life deteriorates amidst distrust. As the song builds, the video grows more chaotic and creepy, with numerous shots featuring the silhouette of a figure simply standing in this fallen world. After a succession of lights pierce through a window, Bowie hits the song’s climax and conjures a scene that would make Raymond Chandler proud: “Sue, I’ve pushed you down beneath the weeds / Hopeless fate in hopeless deeds.”

Supermarket Christmas Commercial Declared a “Dangerous and Disrespectful Masterpiece”

UK supermarket chain Sainsbury’s, in partnership with The Royal British Legion, has released a new holiday commercial for its store recreating that glorious Christmas morning a hundred years ago, when British and German soldiers on the front lines of World War I spontaneously put down their weapons, sang Christmas carols, and played soccer together. True story.

So, what’s the problem?

Via The Daily What:

The commercial is very moving, and visually stunning – as far as advertisements go – but the concept has people complaining that it’s inappropriate to use the war to promote a supermarket.

“A story such as this has no place in an ad which, at its core, is urging you to buy your turkey and trimmings at Sainsbury’s,” writes Ellen Stewart for Metro.

Ally Fogg at the Guardian is calling it “a dangerous and disrespectful masterpiece.”

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has received over 200 complaints, and Neil Kelley, an advertising expert at Leeds Beckett University, told the Mirror that it made him feel “unclean.”

What a load of twaddle. It’s a gorgeous commercial, reminding us of a gorgeous moment in history. The Brits sure do holiday commercials better than we do, don’t they?

Also, and I’m just throwing this out there, not disrespecting the commercial or anything, but, um, guys: It was the Germans – not the British – who came out with lit Christmas trees, who started walking into “no-man’s land” first, and invited the other side to come meet them and offered them gifts. Bit of historical revisionism on the part of the British supermarket chain, isn’t it? But then history belongs to the winners, sooooo…….

Just for good measure, here’s an old Paul McCartney video “Pipes of Peace” based on the same incident. And a link to a great book about it, Silent Night: The Story of the 1914 Christmas Truce.
