Super Soul Sunday source of all problems Oprah Fear Elizabeth Gilbert

During a conversation with Oprah for this weekend’s “Super Soul Sunday”, Eat, Pray Love author, Elizabeth Gilbert explains what the common thread of all problems is, saying that Buddhist teacher Pema Chodron has pinpointed it before. Chodron says;

“‘The older I get, the more I think every problem is just fear. I feel like I’m seeing that too, because the questions that people come to me with seem to always boil down to some version of fear.”

Oprah agrees that people do feel “stuck” in life and fear making a change. Others practice a different brand of fear, masquerading as the desire to be perfect all the time.

“It’s what I call the haute couture, high-end version of fear… perfectionism. It’s just fear in really good shoes. But it’s still fear.” – Elizabeth Gilbert

Amen, sista! The full conversation with Oprah airs on “Super Soul Sunday” today on OWN at 11AM EST. It also streams live on Oprah.com.

One of architect Frank Gehry’s original sketches for the building

Bernard Arnault is the richest man in France, with a net worth of over $29 billion. He oversees LVMH Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy, the corporate colossus that owns the mother-lode of luxury brands; Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs, Givenchy, Fendi, Bulgari + 55 more. Its Fondation Louis Vuitton is opening the 126,000-square-foot glass and steel structure designed by Frank Gehry this month in the Bois de Boulogne of Paris. He has spent the last decade making it at a cost of more than $135 million –perhaps much more. He says in an article today, in The New York Times;

“We don’t speak of numbers when we speak of a dream. Let’s just say it is a very expensive sculpture.”

But, of course, it is more than that. Built to house the contemporary art collection of LVMH (including works by Jeff Koons and Gilbert & George) as well as pieces from Mr. Arnault’s personal collection, the FLV may be the most ambitious, and potentially controversial, new structure in Paris since I. M. Pei’s pyramid landed in the Louvre in 1989. And because the new museum sits on land that belongs to a public park, in 55 years it reverts to the city.

It really is a marvel. After the Guggenheim Bilbao and the Disney concert Hall in LA, we tend to take his designs as a given but he continues to astound with buildings like this, and as a pubic place, it will continue to give back to Paris for many, many years. To read the full story on it and Arnault in the Times, go here.

Doomsday Scenario: We’re All Going to Die From AIRBORNE Ebola

the end is nigh the coming apocalypse help me mommy epidemics ebola disease Death

Um…. not to be an alarmist but: According to the UN’s Ebola response chief, the longer the Ebola epidemic continues infecting people unabated, the higher the chances it will mutate and become AIRBORNE. And then where will we all be? DEAD WITHIN A YEAR. Anthony Banbury, the Secretary General’s Special Representative, told the Telegraph that aid workers were fighting a race against time amid fears the disease will begin to mutate.

He said: ‘The longer it moves around in human hosts in the virulent melting pot that is West Africa, the more chances increase that it could mutate.

His comments come as organizations battling the crisis in West Africa warned the international community has just four weeks to stop its spread before it spirals ‘completely out of control’.

Of course, the conspiracy-minded commenters at the Daily Mail theorize that it ALREADY HAS gone airborne, and nobody’s telling us. Some of my favorite comments below (They make scary bedtime reading):

I called this months ago! I said back in July on this website that Ebola was now airborne but the authorities would “drip feed” us the bad news to avoid global panic and mass econimic collapse. Well, here it is, panic is spreading and soon the global economy will come crashing to a halt. Many of you posting comments today will not be here this time next year. Start praying folks.

HELLO …. ITS ALREADY AIRBORNE, ITS MUTATED,AND IS MUTATING THAT FAST THAT THEY CANNOT FIND A CURE FOR EBOLA. THE PATENT FOR EBOLA IS HELD BY BILL GATES AND THE AMERICAN GOVERNMENT 2012… 2/9/2014 ORDERED 168,000 HAZMATS SUITS.. WHAT DID THEY WE DIDNT…

The big drug companies are already on it producing a drug – the only thing they need to make it worth their while is more fodder – so, no, the flights aren’t going to be stopped and we are being prepared for the “million cases to come” – while being told that it is practically impossible to catch Ebola and worry not! I worked for the airlines and I just love the comments about how impossible this would be to catch on an airplane (cause it is only transmitted through bodily fluids) yeah, well, what is sneezing and spiting and a cut that bleeds – Oh and those lovely roomy lavatories where you miss the bowl and spew urine and fecal matter around (sorry to be so graphic) but in what fantasy except the government’s and the media’s and the talking-head-doctor’s insanity does this not constitute a danger???

This has probably been developed in a lab already. Insider Bradbury is probably just giving us a heads up.

It is always in the eyes. Look at the doctor. He knows.

Chances are if they are worried (warning) of it going airborne it already is. Maybe the decreased death rate (typically in the 90% range) is indicative of a cross-breeding with oh say EV D68 which has a much higher infection rate and is airborne. Seeing as how ebola is classed in the same type as the flu it would not take much engineering for those who own the patent on this disease (CDC) to contrive a much better carrier even if they had to accept a lesser fatality rating. There is no way that a man from Liberia whose country is decimated economically had the money to fly to Brussels then to Washington then to Dallas on his yearly income nevermind having that amount of cash on hand. He was sent or brought to the United States on purpose.

We have been spoon fed lies to avoid panic because if doctors and medics are catching Ebola despite the extreme precautions they have taken then it must be airborne already. This is nature’s way of culling the human hives and preserving the best genetic survivors.

I do not want to sound like a conspiracy theory nut, but looking on the internet at past Ebola outbreaks this particular one is, compared to them, spreading like wildfire, can it really be only spread by body fluids and touch? if so why are heavily protected Doctors and Nurses dying? I have a strange and nagging feeling that we are not being told the whole story, has someone been playing God and its got loose?.

This disease is already airborne, this has been established early on, not sure why this is in question anymore…unless not to cause a panic? My thoughts it is already to late to stop a panic with the public, maybe a slow news day or something.

WERE ALL GONNA DIE, IT’S IN AMERICA AND IT’S POSSIBLE SOMEONE COULD OF FLOWN TO UK FROM TEXAS? BUY STOCKS OF WATER AND FOOD NOW. PANIC BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE.

Has Ebola EVER been airborne? I don’t think so, if it happens now, it was weaponized.

Apparently they are now saying if you are three feet away form someone infected there is a good chance you will get it.

I believe that Ebola IS airborne. The Canadian government had posted on one of their websites that it WAS airborne but that was quickly taken down. The American doctors who have gone to Africa to help Ebola victims wear Hazmat type suits and they are getting Ebola themselves! I think the government officials know the truth but are downplaying the threat to not panic the public. This is very scary!!

Then so be it. Ebola is God’s will; we should not interfere with the magnificent, natural world he has created.

Curiously, the US Goverment holds the patent on the Ebola virus. An airborne mutation was created in the laboratory in 1999. According to reports this seems to be common knowledge in Sierra Leone etc.

It’s an understandable – and very valid “worry”. The progress of the bubonic plague (1347) that killed over half the population of Britain and Europe – it’s progress was slow and initially a – “contact only” – disease. Then it mutated to become “air-borne” – that’s when it became like an unstoppable raging wild-fire – that ripped it’s deadly way across the world – killing billions. Even if you put all of the world’s problems together – they will quickly become insignificant – compared to Ebola – if it mutates to become “air-borne”.

It has gone airborne….. They refuse to tell us……

Illuminati

The UN and CDC are either lying or are delusional to believe that donning rubber aprons, a paper mask and goggles are protecting medical personnel from Ebola. When the CDC works with this virus in their lab, they are wearing complete sealed protective hazmat gear with indendent O2 supply, something out of Andromeda Strain.

They probably knew that transmission of this virus possible through airborne means but weren’t 100% sure at the start. So they’re covering up for their blunder and saying that it “might mutate”. What’s scary here is that the immune systems of Americans might not be strong enough to fight this kind of infection. They should restrict flights coming in from those countries.

The line of people waiting to fly out of the Ebola hot zone is blood chilling.

I believe it already has & I also believe that they very well know that. I’m not one to fall into the media hype around illnesses, but they have not explained how a physician in full isolation gear who did not come in contact with infected body fluids became infected. I believe he became infected interviewing patients prior to diagnosis without his face mask on= airborne. I’m not want to panic easily, but I am starting to get very concerned…..our borders should be closed to infected countries until a vaccine or treatment can be confirmed.

and so it begins…

the end is nigh the coming apocalypse help me mommy epidemics ebola disease Death

Former My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way has a new song (“Millions”), a new video (very Nenah Cherry-meets-Ryan Heffington), and a new look (red hair/red eyeshadow – SQUEEEEAL!). Watch it after the jump. OMG, HE’S SO ADORABLE!

From The Guardian:

Gerard Way says he wants to “sonically galvanise people” with his first solo album. And what better way is there to stun your audience, not with spoon solos, say, but with a celebration of that much-maligned instrument, the guitar?

Utilising what Way describes as currently the “least radio-friendly instrument”, Hesitant Alien draws from the iconic guitar-led sounds he grew up with – particularly David Bowie circa TVC 1, Britpop and his guitar heroes during art school, Mary Timony and Carrie Brownstein. “I wanted to make the small things sound big,” he says about Hesitant Alien. “I knew there would be lots of fuzz pedals. I knew I would play Fender instruments.”

Lifted from the album is his new single, Millions, which is released on 17 November and comes backed with a video that looks as if it was inspired by Talking Heads’ Once in a Lifetime. Watch the premiere below, and let us know your thoughts.

RELATED:

Just read a BLISTERING review of the new season, btw, in the SF Gate.

FX advises you to tune in to the “American Horror Story: Freak Show” premiere Wednesday night “if you dare.” Obviously, that line was written by the network’s marketing people without the benefit of having seen the first two episodes of Ryan Murphy’s previously wonderful anthology series.

As fans know, every year features a different story, albeit with many of the same actors playing different roles. What made it work so perfectly for three seasons was a brilliant mix of horror and humor, both over the top.

Someone seems to have lost the recipe with “Freak Show,” however, which boasts some extraordinary performances by actors who labor in vain against a sometimes plodding script, weighed down with underwhelming horror moments, way-too-obvious metaphors about tolerating differences and a pervasively airless claustrophobia.

In what she says is her final season with “AHS,” Jessica Lange plays the ringmistress of a third-rate freak show that has set down onthe outskirts of Jupiter, Fla., in 1952. Mimicking her idol, Marlene Dietrich, Elsa Mars is a road-show Blanche DuBois with a German accent, badly dyed hair and a tattered monkey-fur cape, trying to keep the property owner from forcing the freak show to hit the road.

Her attractions include Jimmy Darling (Evan Peters), whose deformed hands earn him the title Lobster Boy; the conjoined Tattler Sisters, Dot and Bette (Sarah Paulson); Jimmy’s mom, the bearded lady Ethel (Kathy Bates); and recent arrivals strongman and barker Dell Toledo (Michael Chiklis) and his tri-breasted hermaphrodite wife, Desiree Dupree (Angela Bassett).

The plot is halfheartedly thickened by a hideous killer clown roaming the landscape and brutally murdering various Jupiter citizens, and a whiny young man named Dandy Mott (Finn Whittrock) who runs away from his domineering mother (Frances Conroy) because he wants to join the freak show.

Once again, Tennessee Williams is evoked with facile similarity to Sebastian and Violet Venable.

“Stay, darling, stay with mother,” Conroy’s character pleads when Dandy runs off in a huff. “We’ll play June Allyson paper dolls or whatever you’d like. Something ghastly always happens when you run off in a mood.”

That line is so over the top that it suggests the otherwise MIA genius of previous “AHS” seasons, but all too soon, we’re forced to slog through more hamfisted writing. When Dandy tries to get a job with the freak show, Lobster Boy asks him if by chance he has pony legs or a “double ding-dong.”

“No, but I know the entire Cole Porter canon,” Dandy responds.

Did someone from FX find an old “Sean Saves the World” script when they were picking through the Dumpster at NBC or something?

In spite of everything else that doesn’t work, all the performances are at least very good, and a couple are simply extraordinary. You could say Lange pulls out all the stops, but at this point in her “AHS” career, there aren’t many left to pull out. Her Elsa Mars is haughty, tattered and ever swathed in a cloud of self-delusion, quite worthy of a great Blanche DuBois, who, of course, she played in a 1995 film. At one point, she channels the future to sing David Bowie’s “Life on Mars” the way Dietrich sang “Falling in Love Again” and it’s nothing short of a sideshow aria.

Bates is a marvel, digging into her considerable trunkful of talents to adopt an exquisite Cajun accent as Jimmy’s doting, hirsute mom, Ethel Darling.

Peters is also terrific as Jimmy, barely able to contain his rage against a world that judges anyone not quite like themselves as a “freak.” By the way, the tolerance metaphor reaches a nadir of transparent obviousness when “Freak Show” includes a lunch-counter scene with the freak-show performers, meant to evoke the ugly days of segregation in the South.

Paulson may wind up competing against herself for a supporting actress Emmy for … well, not exactly the same part, but half of it anyway. As Dot Tattler, Paulson is cold, mean, damaged, and as Bette, she’s open, vulnerable and hopeful. Or is it the other way around? One can’t sing a note; the other has a beautiful singing voice. One inhales a cigarette, the other coughs as she exhales the smoke.

But where is the story, not to mention the trademark “AHS” Grand Guignol humor and the horror? The first two episodes try to fake us into believing there’s more here than meets the eye or ear with a lot of dramatic music, but it isn’t enough to mask the series’ deficiencies. Maybe JoJo the Dog Face Boy is just a sad dude in a mutt mask after all.

Turandot Queen Puccini Nessun Dorma Marc Martel Luciano Pavarotti Freddie Merciry duet aria

The late Freddie Mercury, frontman of Queen, and Luciano Pavarotti, the (also-late) Italian opera star, were two of the greatest belters of the 20th century. Now, you can hear singer Marc Martel (never heard of him before) giving you what it would sound like if those two sang a duet. This goosebump-inducing video shows Martel imitating both to perfection with a one-man duet of “Nessun Dorma,” the aria from Giacomo Puccini’s opera “Turandot.” (which is the male equivalent of “I Am Telling You” from Dreamgirls.) Amazingly, Martel swears;

“This is one continuous performance from start to finish, shot in one take, using two cameras.”

You can listen to his new album Impersonator on iTunes here. If he did this on Idol, the world would fall at his feet. Watch.

transgender trans actress Freak Show f/x Erika Ervin American Horror Story AHS: Freak Show

SO excited for “American Horror Story: Freak Show” to kick off tonight –even though JSJ shared a review the other day that was less than glowing. But learning that the hit franchise will welcome a transgender performer makes us want to watch even more. Erika Ervin will star alongside series regulars as “Amazon Eve,” a role she says was originally written for a man. She recalls in this video;

“I auditioned for the part as a guy, slicked back my hair, no make-up…flannel shirt, bound my breasts, dropped my voice and walked in, and nailed it.”

She also says here she thinks the trans community could learn from the show’s message about accepting different types, sizes and varieties.

“It’s more than a freak show. There’s a family here.”

“American Horror Story: Freak Show” debuts tonight on FX! Watch her interview, she’s kind of amazing.

I see today that a person who landed at LAX after traveling to Liberia has been rushed to Centinela Hospital Medical Center in Inglewood to be tested for Ebola. Sooooooo… IT’S HERE. And all of Hollywood will be a ghost town by Thanksgiving. For the few survivors, I predict fabulous face masks will be all the rage in 2015. I’ve selected a few of my favorites (from the aughts great SARS scare) after the jump. Note to designers: Designer Ebola masks and gloves will make you MILLIONS….. if you live.
