By now, you’ve probably heard about Ello, the ad-free, invite-only, social network that seems to have gone viral in just the last week. Reports have linked its rise to the recent controversy caused by Facebook’s “real name policy“, which requires all users to go by their “legal name”. This, as you also may know, has caused many in the LGBT community to try to get a mass exodus going. Ello, of course, allows users to identify themselves by any name they want. They say;

“We believe a social network can be a tool for empowerment. Not a tool to deceive, coerce, and manipulate — but a place to connect, create, and celebrate life. You are not a product.”

The site is kind of a cross between Twitter and Tumblr and, like Facebook, users can post status updates, pics (+ GIFs, which you can’t on FB) and make comments on their friend’s posts. There have been reports that Ello is receiving anywhere from 4,000 to 30,000 requests AN HOUR! The network apparently received so many requests that it had to temporarily limit users’ abilities to send them. I’m all for an alternative but the usage really has to reach critical mass in a big hurry, otherwise it’s like being the first one at the party –you wait in the kitchen until some people you know show up. He plays the morally ambiguous gay character Conner Walsh and he was absolutely DAZZLING! Now, back when I was the only person watching ABC Family’s Twisted, I predicted that he would become a breakout star, and gushed about him on a number of occasions RIGHT HERE ON THIS BLOG. You didn’t care then, but maybe you’ll sit up and take notice now. I mean: Just look at him. He’s got the face of a young Johnny Depp. It actually HURTS YOUR RETINAS to look at him.

He’s profiled in this week’s issue of OUT magazine:

Jack Falahee looks as though he’s just stepped out of a Jay McInerney or Bret Easton Ellis novel. He bears a rather eerie resemblance to the slick cut-glass-cheekbone type that always seemed to end up the Byronic hero in 1980s fiction, the prep-school dreamboat with the dark past and the bright new BMW. This is actually not far from the flawless charmer he plays on ABC’s brooding new legal drama, How to Get Away With Murder (premiering September 25). As gay law student Connor Walsh, Falahee manages to come across as simultaneously brilliant, arrogant, manipulative, sexually pred-atory, and totally irresistible.

“My character is someone who is entirely confident, entirely comfortable with who he is,” says the 25-year-old native of Ann Arbor, Mich., a lock of hair falling just so against his smooth forehead. “Connor is one of those people no one has ever said no to.” Falahee pauses, and his careful, measured delivery—which up to this point has echoed that of his calculating alter ego—suddenly gives way to a warm, wide, thoroughly Midwestern grin. “I am not that guy,” he says, laughing. “I have all the usual quirky insecurities that everyone has. Connor isn’t ever insecure. And that makes him really fun to play.”

Writer, creator, and executive producer of How to Get Away With Murder Peter Nowalk reveals that Connor (Jack Falahee), the gay character, is definitely going to have a romance in the first season, right off the bat, starting with the second episode. It was in important to show a gay person as a full-fledged character.”

Does that word “legend” get used too much? I don’t think it’s misused here when talking about Stevie Nicks and Debbie Harry. They ARE legends, nevermind female icons and rock n roll goddesses. There were hardly ever more gorgeous gals on a stage than these two, and these two New York shows highlight them, in both public and private moments.

Blondie’s 40th Anniversary
Gallerist and former MOCA director, Jeffrey Deitch‘s stamp of approval is on this exhibit of pictures, videos, memorabilia and even some of the fan art with the majority being photographs from Bob Gruen, Annie Leibovitz, Roberta Bayley, Robert Mapplethorpe, Bobby Grossman, Mick Rock, David Godlis, plus the band’s own Chris Stein. His book – Chris Stein/Negative: Me, Blondie, and the Advent of Punk was released by Rizzoli this last week. You can order a copy on Amazon here. The show is only up until this Monday at the Chelsea Hotel Storefront Gallery, 222, West 23rd Street in New York.

Stevie Nicks: 24 Karat Gold
After languishing in a shoebox for decades, a collection of Polaroids shot by Stevie Nicks will go on display at a New York City. The exhibit, curated by Eurythmics guitarist and Stevie Nicks collaborator Dave Stewart, will be released under the same title. The album, like the portraits, is a time capsule unearthed: the songs were written and demo-ed between 1969 and 1987, but re-recorded in recent months. Beginning in the mid-seventies, Stevie Nicks took this series of Polaroid selfies all around the world while on tour. Each one of these archival pigment prints is signed and numbered. She says;

“Some people don’t sleep at night – I am one of those people. These pictures were taken long after everyone had gone to bed – I would begin after midnight and go until 4 or 5 in the morning. I stopped at sunrise – like a vampire… I never really thought anyone would ever see these pictures, they went into shoeboxes, where they remained. I did everything – I was the stylist, the makeup artist, the furniture mover, the lighting director. It was my joy – I was the model…”

I’m not an expert on strange shows for children, in this country or any other, but Kinderkreis HAS to be right up there with the weirdest. Teletubbies on Molly. Kids answer questions and then dancers in spandex interpret their response. BE-yond. How can you parody something that has all the hallmarks of parody already? Dans Gushers!! Watch.

UPDATE: After posting this my FB friend, Ann O’Mynous, wrote to say this about the video, directed by Bill Moulton;

Publicis Modem wanted to create a viral film that had the feel of a foreign television program for the General Foods fruit snack, Gushers. So, I worked with the creative team to develop a show concept called “Kinderkreis” (Circle of Children) featuring a colorful dance troupe that interprates the emotions of children through dance movements. Each dancer represents a different Gusher flavor and I created a special song just for them, called “Dans Gushers”. But while the show is entirely in German, it was actually shot in Buenos Aires with an all-Argentinian cast. The clip quickly became viral, reaching the Conan O’Brien show and spurring many online spoofs…especially in Germany, where it has created an ongoing debate about whether the show is really German or not.

I know I’m politicizing a newborn when congratulations are really in order – but this baby was born into a political dynasty. Believe me, the GOP doesn’t see a baby here, they see an election tool, a conspiracy and possibly, a demon spawn. Welcome to the Clinton Family, Charlotte. It’s not just an expression to say that politics is in your blood.

Yes, it is pretty tacky and over-the-top in a “Beverly Hillbillies” kinda way but you know, I think this could be a real steal. No kidding. First of all, not sure if you want to live in Glendale, but this “neoclassical palace” sits atop its own promontory in the College Hills neighborhood. It really has GREAT views and the house, with some updating could be AMAZING –in a good way. Don’t be like those folks on HGTV that can’t see past wall color (It’s PAINT PEOPLE!) This place is SO bad, it’s spectacular. You ALWAYS remodel the kitchen and bathrooms anyway, so forget those. (You’d think with THAT much marble they might have put it in the kitchen instead of that counter tile?) Anyway, there are six bedrooms, four bathrooms, a mini-art gallery, and enough columns for your own coliseum. It’s 4,444-square-foot and it sits on half an acre. Full disclosure, this place has been on and off the market for the past decade, for as much as $9 million. But it was recently re-listed with a bargain price tag of just $1.995 million. The 80s are back anyway, so if you don’t want to get into a heavy remodel (and especially if you like early Scarface decor) you can just bring your blowdryer, your machine-gun and your toothbrush.

The Piano Guys recreate all the Batman scores – from Batman ’66, to Tim Burton’s Batman to Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy – using a piano, 100 cellos, and three awesome Batmobiles. Check it out after the jump. Which is your favorite?

With Batman’s 75th anniversary still in full swing, it is fitting that people would find any way to pay to tribute to one of the most iconic characters of all-time. The Piano Guys took the time to look back at a 50 year chunk of Batman’s existence and perform a medley of each of the memorable themes from the Caped Crusader’s tv and movie appearances.

Sure, you could argue that there’s one or two missing and that the “Batdance” is the superior choice among all Batman music. That doesn’t mean this medley is a bit of fun. It might come off a little bit “Hawaiian shirts in high school jazz band” from time to time, but I think seeing each of the batmobile’s softens my view a bit.

You have to wonder where the new Batman will go in regards to a theme song. The trend seems to be less is more and heroic horns thrown in here and there. I came around on The Dark Knight theme after a while, but I don’t know how any other music would distance itself from being generic. Prove me wrong, I guess.

Dunkin Donuts wants you to know it has a new blend — Dark Roast. It is serving up free medium cups today.

Krispy Kreme is offering a free 12oz regular coffee. For $1, you can get a mocha, latte or iced coffee.

McDonald’s has been giving away free coffee for two weeks, an offer that ends today.

Starbucks is offering a free sample of its Anniversary Blend. But this is only good until noon… the West Coast can still take advantage.

Tim Horton’s is offering a $1 cup of coffee but it’s also hiding golden envelopes with “more than $9,000 in cash and gift cards” in five cities: Columbus, Ohio; Buffalo and Rochester, New York; Detroit and Grand Rapids, Michigan. Clues will be posted to its social media accounts.
