Back in the 90s, house music ruled, and every dance floor was all about Crystal Waters. Her hit single Gypsy Woman (La da dee la da da) became the anthem (and earworm) for every apparent disenfranchised queen from NYC to London, looking for beauty in disparaging situations. In new video Hustlin’, EDM/R&B singer Vassy samples the iconic opening organ groove from Waters’ club banger and pays homage to her by recreating some of her sartorial looks. Crystal also makes a cameo…a possible passing of the torch and nod to Vassy’s spot on re-envisioning. Vassy’s We Are Young Album out October 28th.

RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 4 winner Sharon Needles pays homage to the ultimate nightlife icon, Amanda Lepore, in the new video for her single “I Wish I Were Amanda Lepore.”
Sharon and I talked about the song in a 2012 Daily Freak Show episode:
“The song is super emotional to me. I wrote the poem ten years ago and its been rewritten and rewritten and rewritten. I always said if I was ever famous, this would be a song I would do. It’s really about idol worship and insecurity … I wrote the song and I thought it was great. I was a little insensitive, there were lines in it like ‘broken ribs and bloated lips.’ I had a phone interview with Mandy and she said ‘There’s just so much more to me than my surgery. The world accepts me for how I look, we can talk about something else. I’m more [than] a model, I’m a role model.’ So the song completely got a rewrite. It’s kind of this juxtaposition, a back and forth about insecurities about not looking as perfect as Amanda and then Amanda saying there’s beauty in everything and even perfection has a beating heart. It’s a love song!”

Argentine art duo Pool & Marianela have refashioned Barbie and Ken dolls into Catholic saints, causing controversy in Latin America and sparking debate over art and religion.
From the artists’ Facebook page:
“In a world that rewards us for thinking, acting, and feeling the same, Marianela and Pool rebel, reaffirming their call to be different. We use humor to highlight their disconnection from a historical, political, religious and fictional universe that still entraps their elders. We rebel to reveal”
The works will be exhibited in Buenos Aires at the POPA Galería de Arte, starting on October 11, in a show called “Barbie, The Plastic Religion.”

Fascinating unaired pilot from the early ’60s about a little girl growing up in a family of Greenwhich Village beatniks. Desilu Studios adapted the popular children’s book Suzuki – a satire of Kay Thompson’s Eloise series – into a TV pilot, which ultimately did not find a sponsor. This shortened version eventually aired with another recycled pilot and some new material with Lucille Ball and Gale Gordon as part of The Victor Borge Comedy Theater. (via SissyDude)
Suzuki Beane was a children’s book written in 1961 by Sandra Scoppettone and illustrated by Louise Fitzhugh (of Harriet the Spy fame). The story, sometimes described as “the Eloise of Greenwich Village”, is told from the viewpoint of a young child of Bleecker Street beats.
