One time we got this guy up on stage to strip for $100, but he was barely moving. So, Bianca screamed at him ‘Dance, like you got good credit!’. I thought to myself, ‘damn, that’s a goot title for a song.’” Cazwell’s sophomore album Hard 2 B Fresh, out September 30th.

Thumbing through today’s pick of paparazzi shots, I found myself mentally playing “Would You Hit It?”  over and over again, and thought I’d share the experience. Of course, there are no right or wrong answers, and just keep your final decisions to yourself (so you’re honest). 

1. Daniel Radcliffe, BUT he’s making this face the entire time.

2. Ike Barinholtz, so adorable on The Mindy Project and all-around total husband material, but he’s making THIS face… and little farting noises.

3. Shaggy Teen Wolf star Dylan O’Brien… but he has reeeeeeeally bad B.O. and ass-breath from partying all night.

4. Dax Shepard. Could you? Would you? I sometimes think he looks like a dog that’s been CGI’d into a person. But he seems like a good husband to Kristen Bell. So…. yes?

5. An easy one. British TV presenter George Lamb. But he makes you listen to “Shake It Off” over and over while you do it.

6. Slightly more difficult: Justin Long. He used to be really cute on those MAC commercials, then suddenly he was just irritating. Then he was cute again when he dated Drew Barrymore, then he sort of wasn’t again. Would you hit it for old time’s sake and hope it rekindled his cuteness?

7. Zac Efron. But he’s sort of a jerk to you, and you have to let his crack dealer and some hobos he found downtown watch.

8. Haley Joel Osment but he’s actually reeeeeally wonderful and he just took you on an incredibly romantic date in which he showered you with Comme des Garcons cocoon coats and vanilla Pop Tarts and you found you really connected to him and had a lot in common.

Last night, Million Matchmaker story producer Jordan Papadopoulos gifted me with the most fabulous gift EVER: A Teen Wolf poster signed by THE ENTIRE CAST. Can you IMAGINE MY DELIGHT?  Turns out, he’s friends with the GORGEOUS Gage Golightly (Erica from Derek’s wolf pack, of course), and she procured the autographs. I’m GOBSMACKED. Thankyouthankyouthankyou Gage! I’m off to frame it RIGHT NOW and hang it above my bed. On the ceiling, so it will be the last thing I see before I drift off to sleep.

On a related note: That’s not a cold sore on my lip, I promise, it’s probably a bit of chewed-up bagel, which is even more embarrassing.

On another related note: The Advocate just came out with an op-ed piece slamming Teen Wolf for it’s queerbaiting tactics. That is: For a long time now, they’ve been giving us just enough gay subtext to keep us interested, but not enough to satisfy us or make us truly represented. 

For a generation that has never known a time when LGBT people were not represented on the small screen in some form, limited visibility and queer subtext are no longer enough to hold their interest.

The continued teases that a character might be bisexual with no payoff, the same-sex romances that end as quickly as they begin with little development, the disappearance of gay characters without explanation, and the absence of any well-developed LGBT character four seasons into a show that appeared to bank heavily on its queer appeal early on have left vocal fans howling.

That’s a shame, considering how groundbreaking the show was in the first three seasons. Back then,

Teen Wolf flipped the objectification script by flaunting the buff bods of the boys in its cast at every opportunity, including numerous homoerotic locker room scenes, and then took it even further. Boys would flirt with boys as well as girls — most frequently by Stiles Stilinski (played by Dylan O’Brien). Before long, it became obvious that the creative minds behind Teen Wolf weren’t simply using queer elements to infuse the show with gay appeal, they were ramping up the gay appeal to court a young audience. And this audience had grown up with LGBT visibility in various forms.

The show existed in a world where homophobia was nonexistent — a groundbreaking concept, even in basic cable. The presence of out gay teen Danny Mahealani (played by Keahu Kahuanui) among the show’s cast of supporting characters was a monumental shift for a gay character on a TV series aimed at a young teen audience. Not because Danny was a part of the world, but because of the way every other character reacted to him. The straight characters on the series weren’t simply OK with the fact that Danny was gay. His sexuality was treated no differently than differences in eye color. Instead of being taunted by the star jock of Beacon Hills High — Jackson (played by Colton Haynes) — Danny was his best friend.

Little Billy is being bullied at school because of his teeth (awww) and because the way he walks. Enter football superstar JJ Watt who spends the day with Billy and introduces him to the wonderful world of the YMCA (Wyatt to Billy: “You can get yourself clean, you can have a good meal, You can do whatever you feel …”). Trust me: You WILL cry. And you’ll absolutely love little Billy, omg poor little guy. Althooooooooooooough…. not to piss all over what JJ did, but shouldn’t he have helped Billy with his bullying a little more directly? Maybe helped negotiate a truce or, I don’t know, given Billy the tools to get through the school day? This feels incomplete.

Yes, as a Houstonian and fan of JJ, this clip was viewed by me mainly because of JJ… But I work in the dental field and quickly noticed that Billy needed orthodontic treatment, and my attention and heart were quickly won over by Billy. Billy is coming in Thursday for his first consultation.

Isn’t that just paying tribute to their own heritage? Would it have been different if, say, a Japanese model (like Bae Chiharu, Tao Okamoto, or Kiko Mizuhara) had been used instead of Photoshopping Miranda to look vaguely Asian? No, no, no. That would never happen, the commenters say. “Vogue Japan rarely ever puts asian models on the cover,” asserts a commenter. “About once every five years,” chimes in another.

Besides, according to commenters who KNOW HOW THE JAPANESE FEEL, cultural appropriation doesn’t bother native Japanese people at all. “The entire concept doesn’t even fit in with them culturally.” So THERE.

“Of course it wouldn’t,” someone else responds, “since distortions of their culture don’t actually have any negative effects on their lives as they are the majority and thus don’t suffer from the consequences of having your culture being commodified and misrepresented, which is what people of Japanese descent living in other, especially Western, countries have to deal with.”

Meaning: It doesn’t matter whether the culture that’s being appropriated feels insulted or not, it’s still just wrong. Every single time.

Personally, I think the cover is gorgeous. The jacket is amazeballs and those marvelous geisha-esque rolls of hair on the cover fall just on the side of “hommage” rather than straight up theft. I would TOTALLY wear a wig like that. It’s tricky, though. There are so many wonderful looks from around the world that Western fashion loves to incorporate, and it would be a shame to someday be told that tartan or batik or little Tyrollean hats were off limits. On the other hand, I totally get it when, say, Native Americans say it’s offensive for Non-Native Americans to wear their religious headdresses, and would we please stop it. I often wonder though, if there’s a way to keep the idea, but put it in a different context. Keep the form of a feathered bonnet, but remove the Native American signifiers. I remember talking to someone about a possible Transformation, explaining that I wanted to do tribal, “but tribal from Mars. Or maybe a tribe of robots from the future.” Something completely free of any associations with African tribalism, which can be troubling, you know. Ditto for bindis. Tiny red dots maybe off limits, but what about giant silver ones? Making them more of a graphic statement. What about that?

Tina, Untouched!

“When I was a teenager I painted. I enjoyed the texture of oil paints and painted almost every day from the age of 15 until I turned 20. I loathed filling in backgrounds because they were so time consuming, and often wished I had an assistant to do the boring bits! When I discovered the instant moment of taking a photograph and the speed in which to develop it in a darkroom I was hooked! I poured over glossy magazines and started to collect big photo books by the photographic masters, and the fashion greats. I never trained as a photographer, and as a result felt a little ‘less than’ so I practiced with light until I understood it. I have an open mind. I usually wait until they turn up to the studio or location, chat to them while scanning their face, their body, and then, on the spur of the moment, while they are getting their hair done, I set up lights and backgrounds. I am an optimist. I am flexible. If someone believes that his or her left side is their more photogenic side, I go with that and then try to encourage them to break out of a mold that really is in their own head… I revere and respect my subjects, and I do think that humor and a sense of wit and fun add to my images. I have a sense of history too, which all blends, like a braid, to create this book of which I am proud.”

These are just a few examples of his work from back in the day. No, they aren’t new, they’ve now passed into being classics. The tile of the book comes from the fact that they are unretouched images, unheard of today in celebrity portraiture. Johnny’s still drawing and taking photographs – refining that keen POV. (A little backstory to our cover girl, Johnny was introduced to Buddhism by Tina Turner in ’82, and has been practicing ever since.) You can get Untouched here.
