Sad news to report, Verne Troyer, known for playing Mini-Me along side Mike Meyers in the Austin Powers films, and for being one of the world’s shortest humans at 2′ 8″, has died.

Verne passed away today, according to a statement from his family. He was on life support since being taken to the hospital earlier this month after being treated for possible alcohol poisoning.

Verne’s family says,

He was baptized while surrounded by his family.

Troyer struggled with alcoholism for years and had been to rehab multiple times. Troyer was born with the genetic disorder known as achondroplasia dwarfism. Growing up on a farm in Michigan, Troyer has he was never treated differently by his parents than other siblings.

Verne began his Hollywood career in 1994 as a stunt double for Baby Bink in the film Baby’s Day Out, and after landing roles in Men in Black and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, the he then hit it big in 1999, so to speak, as the iconic Mini-Me in Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me.

Troyer continued to work in Hollywood and also appeared on many popular reality shows over the years, like Celebrity Juice, Celebrity Wife Swap, and The Surreal Life.

Verne Troyer was 49.

Police say the vehicle at the scene was registered to this man

Police say the gunman, who was nude, opened fire at about 3:25 AM killing four people and wounding three in a shooting Sunday at a Waffle House in the Nashville area.

CNN affiliate WSMV reported that the gunman was naked except for a green jacket when he entered the restaurant in the town of Antioch.

A customer wrestled away the rifle, according to police. The unnamed customer suffered injuries but they are not serious. A witness who was in the parking lot said that the good Samaritan rushed in while the gunman had stopped firing and was looking at his weapon.

Had that guy reloaded, there were plenty more people who probably could have not made it home this morning.

Authorities are asking for the public’s help in finding 29-year-old Travis Reinking of Morton, Illinois. (See Reinking? Please call 615-862-8600 immediately.)

Police said the gunman arrived in a vehicle registered to Reinking and was last seen running away from the scene naked.

UPDATE: Murder warrants are now being drafted against Travis Reinking.

Actress Allison Mack Arrested & Charged with “Sex Trafficking & Forced Labor Conspiracy”

According to a statement released by the Justice Department, actress Allison Mack, best known for her role on Smallville, was indicted Friday on charges of sex trafficking, sex trafficking conspiracy and forced labor conspiracy.

WOW’s James St. James reported this story last month that she was under investigation, but after Mack’s arrest, this is shocking front page news.

Mack’s alleged involvement was with an organization called Nxivm, a group who claimed to be a self-help program. In reality, it was a pyramid scheme where, according to U.S attorney Richard P. Donoghue, recruits were exploited

both sexually and for their labor, to the defendants’ benefit.

Nxivm’s founder, Keith Raniere, known within the group as Vanguard, was also indicted on Friday and will be arraigned on a date to be determined.

Donoghue stated,

As alleged in the indictment, Allison Mack recruited women to join what was purported to be a female mentorship group that was, in fact, created and led by Keith Raniere.

The U.S. Attorney’s office, John Marzulli, confirmed to CNN that Mack entered a not guilty plea.

A statement posted on the Nxivm website says the group is,

working with the authorities to demonstrate [Raniere’s] innocence and true character. We strongly believe the justice system will prevail in bringing the truth to light.

Allison Mack began acting at a young age but joining the cast of superhero series Smallville in 2001, was her big break in Hollywood. Mack later had roles on Wilfred and American Odyssey. Her most recent credit was in Amazon‘s animated series Lost in Oz as a voiceover.

Trump Says He Might Pardon Him. Who is Jack Johnson?

$

Photo via Wikimedia Commons

It hurt me that people on social media had never heard of Jack Johnson, the black boxer who was convicted by an all-white jury of accompanying a white woman across state lines more than 100 years ago. Some were confusing him for Jack Johnson the Hawaiian singer/songwriter who produces a sort of “surf rock” so mellow as to be nearly catatonic. He should get a pardon too.

On Saturday morning, POTUS tweeted that Sylvester Stallone, famous for the Rocky boxing film franchise, had called and told him how Johnson, the boxing’s first African-American heavyweight champion, was found guilty of violating the Mann Act in 1919, a law that made it illegal for men to transporting women across state lines for “immoral purposes”, a racially motivated charge that embroiled Johnson in controversy because of his relationships, including marriages, with white women. For decades, Johnson was the most famous and the most notorious African-American on Earth.

The POTUS tweet read: “His trials and tribulations were great, his life complex and controversial. Others have looked at this over the years, most thought it would be done, but yes, I am considering a Full Pardon!”, so you know he didn’t actually write the tweet because it uses not just full sentences, but alteration and syntax.

Johnson’s life is the subject of the The Great White Hope (1970) starring James Earl Jones and Jane Alexander, who both received Academy Award nominations.

At the start of the 20th century, the popularity of boxing was at an all-time high, but black and white men rarely boxed together. In 1908, fighting in a rare public match, Johnson won against white Canadian Tommy Burns and became the Heavyweight Champion of the World. In 1910, Johnson, the son of former slaves, had brought about public derision and hatred as he defeated white boxer after white boxer, including “the great white hope”, the undefeated James J. Jeffries. The fight took place on July 4, in front of 20,000 people, at a ring built just for the occasion in downtown Reno. It was billed as “The Fight of the Century” and earned Johnson $65,000 ($2 million in 2018 dollars).

Photograph from Wikimedia Commons

Johnson outraged the public with his relationships with white women and his lavish spending. For many in the black community and most white citizens, Johnson was guilty of not “knowing his place” in Jim Crow-era America. Johnson’s skill as a boxer and the matches that he won and amount of money that he was paid made it impossible for him to be ignored by American society.

After his conviction, Johnson fled to Canada and then France before returning to the USA seven years later. He served a year in federal prison and was released in 1921.

On June 10, 1946, Johnson died in a car crash on U.S. Highway 1 near Raleigh, SC, after leaving angrily from a diner that refused to serve him. He was 68-years-old at the time of his death. His grave was initially unmarked, but now a stone bears only the name “Johnson”.

Johnson presaged the most famous boxer of all time, Muhammad Ali. Ali often spoke of how he was influenced by Johnson because Ali felt America ostracized him in the same way because of his opposition to the Vietnam War and his conversion to Islam.

Senator John McCain pushed for the legendary pugilist’s pardoning in 2008. McCain:

“Johnson was a boxing legend and pioneer whose career and reputation were ruined by a racially charged conviction more than a century ago. Johnson’s imprisonment forced him into the shadows of bigotry and prejudice and continues to stand as a stain on our national honor.”

Officially the policy of the Department of Justice states that: “processing posthumous pardon petitions is grounded in the belief that the time of the officials involved in the clemency process is better spent on the pardon and commutation requests of living persons”.

Check out Ken Burns‘s documentary about Johnson’s life, Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise And Fall Of Jack Johnson (2005).

On the last track of Miles Davis‘s album A Tribute To Jack Johnson, actor Brock Peters as Johnson says:

I’m Jack Johnson. Heavyweight champion of the world.

I’m black. They never let me forget it.

I’m black all right! I’ll never let them forget it!

A Door From the Hotel Chelsea Just Sold for $100,000 (Guess Who Wrote a Masterpiece Behind It?)

The $100,000 door

Last week, 52 beat-up wooden doors went up for sale at Guernsey’s auction house. But it’s not the doors themselves but what happened behind them that had bidders clamoring. Arlan Ettinger, president of Guernsey’s said they’re,

anything but beautiful.

These doors were the physical entry into New York’s bohemian renaissance and they all saw lots of sex, drugs, and and rock and roll too, at the infamous Hotel Chelsea.

• Oddly, the door that once led to the actual Doors’ Jim Morrison, only fetched $7,500..?

• A door that once opened for Madonna went for $13,000… as did Jimi Hendrix‘s.

• The door to where Andy Warhol filmed Edie Sedgwick for the iconic Chelsea Girls went for $52,000.

• $85,000 bought Room 424’s door, where Janis Joplin and Leonard Cohen created the dirty reality for his line ”giving me head on an unmade bed while a limousine waited in the street” immortalized Cohen’s Chelsea Hotel No. 2.

• And the door to Room 225 is where in 1965 Bob Dylan wrote what some consider to be THE best album ever, Blonde on Blonde. That one went for $100,000.

These artifacts of New York cultural history were destined for the dump but for the work of former Chelsea Hotel tenant Jim Georgiou. Five years ago, he salvaged the doors after they were thrown out during the hotel’s renovation. Homeless at the time, Georgiou insisted that half the proceeds from the auction be donated to City Harvest, a nonprofit organization that collects and redistributes food from restaurants, bakeries, and greenmarkets.

He told Artnet,

Having been homeless myself, I appreciate all City Harvest does to help those who are in need of help, and giving back to a charitable organization, to me, honors the memory of the Chelsea. It was a place that was initially designed to be a collective—where everyone shared what they had with their neighbor.

The Hotel Chelsea has provided room and board to some of the most preeminent figures in culture from Mark Twain and Tennessee Williams to Allen Ginsberg, Valerie Solanas, Simone de Beauvoir, Jack Kerouac, and William Burroughs. (I once took Quentin Crisp to meet Burroughs in his room there.)

Arthur C. Clarke wrote 2001: A Space Odyssey there.

Scores of artists and musicians from Jean Tinguely to Julian Schnabel to Diego Rivera and Jackson Pollock, Yves Klein, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Willem de Kooning, Robert Mapplethorpe, Patti Smith, Rene Ricard, and Sid Vicious, to name just a few. It was also home to the painter Alphaeus Philemon Cole, who at the time of his death in 1988, was the oldest man to ever have lived, at 112 years old.

It’s been bought and sold recently, with renovations set to be completed by 2019 but the hotel will surely never see it’s glory days as the cultural epicenter it once was.

To read more about the history of the hotel, you can go here.

#Airbnb: Waking Up in Malibu in This Airstream Would Be a Dream…

$
0
0

I stumbled upon this personal Airstream oasis of a nature-loving Malibu designer on Airbnb. It was redesigned into a studio with three sliding glass panels that open onto a deck with incredible views of the Pacific ocean and surrounding mountains.

Just a short drive away from L.A., it’s not luxury, but it ain’t cheap either, at $650 a night. But you could wake up above the clouds like you are the only two people on the planet. I’m assuming two, as this joint was built for romance. But as the listing says,

There’s a queen sized bed and another pull out sofa that can fit another person – bring your own sleeping bag for the 3rd wheel…

It also gives a few other amusing warnings and caveats;

PLEASE DO NOT BOOK THIS LISTING if you are afraid of nature or its creatures. Understand you are surrounded by thousands of acres completely untouched nature. You are very likely to hear (or see) coyotes, owls, seals, roadrunners and bunnies. There is a bobcat in the area but these are usually very skittish. There are a mice in the Santa Monica mountains. About once a month, a guest will complain that they saw a mouse. Said mouse might come into the Airstream if food is left outside the fridge. We do not offer refunds if a mouse comes into the airstream but we do have 4 traps around the airstream so the odds are heavily stacked against the mice.

In three years we have yet to ever see a rattle snake near the airstream so the area is definitely not prone to them.

If you are fearful of dirt roads, care immensely about your sports car, or are afraid of cliffs, skip this booking. For all other adventurers, I make it up with my Prius without bottoming out no problem so don’t fear.“

You can find out more about the listing here and see more pics to fantasize Instagram here.

#QueerQuote: ”God Gave Me the Talent to Pose for Pictures and It Seems to Make People Happy. That Can’t Be a Bad Thing, Can It? ” – Bettie Page

$

Via Wikimedia Commons

Bettie Page was a popular pin-up model and sex symbol in the 1950s who, after her death, became a cult figure. Her straight black bangs and innocent, playful attitude made her a fashion icon.

Her later life was marked by depression and violent mood swings. She spent several years in a state mental institution.

Page was most famous for the more than 20,000 4-by-5-inch black-and-white glossy photographs taken from 1949 to 1957. The photos show her in high heels and bikinis or negligees, bondage apparel… or nothing at all.

Decades later, those images inspired biographies, comic books, fan clubs, websites, Bettie Page ephemera, action figures, and a film The Notorious Bettie Page (2005).

Page had many naughty personas: Nurse Bettie, Jungle Bettie, Voodoo Bettie, Banned in Boston Bettie, Maid Bettie, Crackers in Bed Bettie.

After her passing, Hugh Hefner wrote:

“The origins of what captures the imagination and creates a particular celebrity are sometimes difficult to define.Bettie Page was one of Playboy Magazine’s early Playmates, and she became an iconic figure, influencing notions of beauty and fashion. Then she disappeared. Many years later, Bettie resurfaced and we became friends. Page’s appeal is a combination of wholesome innocence and fetish-oriented poses that is at once retro and very modern.”

Page never understood her place in popular culture:

“I have no idea why I’m the only model who has had so much fame so long after quitting work. I want to be remembered as I was when I was young and in my golden times. I want to be remembered as the woman who changed people’s perspectives concerning nudity in its natural form.”

Photo collage from Wikimedia Commons

Bettie Mae Page was born April 22, 1923, in Nashville. After high school, Page earned a teaching degree, but her career did not last. Page:

“I couldn’t control my students, especially the boys.”

In 1948, she had divorced her abusive husband and fled to NYC and tried to find work as an actor. She was noticed on the beach at Coney Island by a photographer who introduced her to amateur camera clubs.

Page attracted the attention of Irving and Paula Klaw who had a mail-order business selling cheesecake and bondage poses. Under contract with the Klaws, Page was photographed with a whip, spanking other women, even being hog-tied. She also appeared in 8-millimeter stag films with titles like Betty Page In High Heels.

Page:

“I had lost my ambition and desire to succeed and better myself; I was adrift. But I could make more money in a few hours modeling than I could earn in a week as a secretary.”

From “Bettie Page Reveals All” (2012) Via YouTube

In January 1955, Page appeared as the Playboy centerfold, winking under a Santa Claus cap.

In 1958, Page walked away from it all at 35-years old. She quit modeling and began Bible studies and served in the Billy Graham Crusade.

Page suffered from depression marked by violent mood swings. In 1981, she argued with her landlady and attacked her with a knife. A judge found her innocent by reason of insanity but sentenced her to 10 years in a California mental institution. She was released in 1992 to discover that she had become a pop culture icon among women as well as men, that continues to this day. Page finally began receiving a respectable income for her work.

In 2007, Page told Playboy:

“When I turned my life over to the lord Jesus I was ashamed of having posed in the nude. But now, most of the money I’ve got is because I posed in the nude. So I’m not ashamed of it now. But I still don’t understand it.”

She spent most of her final years living in a one-bedroom apartment, working for CMG Worldwide Agency autographing pinups of herself in her 1950s era prime. The agency controls her image and those of Marilyn Monroe, Bette Davis, James Dean, Princess Diana and many, many others icons.

Page left this world in 2008. Her estate made Number Ten on the 2017 Forbes annual list of top-earning dead celebrities:

Michael Jackson, $825 million

Charles Schulz, $48 million

Arnold Palmer, $40 million

Elvis Presley, $27 million

Prince, $25 million

#LostInSpace: That Time Mrs. Robinson Outed Dr. Smith…

Have you been watching the reboot of Lost in Space on Netflix? I just finished it last night and it had some problems, but I liked it. Our James St. James doesn’t love it, as he said on Wow’s Top 10 Radio Andy this Friday. If nothing else, it’s making people HATE Parker Posey who plays Dr. Smith. She’s SO good at being bad…

Well, if you ever saw 2 minutes of the original Lost In Space, you might wonder about Jonathan Harris, who played Dr. Zachary Smith. Was he supposed to be gay? The Robinson’s Mom on the show, June Lockhart recalls that Harris didn’t try to “tone it down”. She tells Cary Harrison he was a total hoot on set and she once laughed so much she was written out of 2 episodes as punishment.

Watch.

Miloš Forman, left this world on April 13 at 86-years-old. Be sure to check out World of Wonder writer Trey Speegle‘s remembrance here.

Forman is probably most famous as director of One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest (1975) and Amadeus (1984) for which he won Academy Awards for Best Director and Best Picture. He also gave us: Hair (1979), Ragtime (1981), and The People vs. Larry Flynt (1996), among other great, award-winning films.

Forman was born, and until 1968, lived and worked primarily in what was then called Czechoslovakia.

His first important film was a documentary Audition (1964) about competing singers, followed by Black Peter (1964). Both films made a splash but Loves Of A Blonde (1965) and The Firemen’s Ball (1967), made him world famous and ushered in the Czech New Wave. Both films are biting satires of East European Communism, both are set in small Czech towns, filmed on location, and are cast with non-professional actors. Both were nominated for Oscars for Best Foreign Film, plus both were given international posters that were as revolutionary as the films they touted.

Forman was told by his international distributor that Loves Of A Blonde was too short for American audiences and didn’t feature enough nudity, so he shot additional scenes. Yet oddly, The Firemen’s Ball, the least sexy movie of the two, had the more salacious posters.

The website says relationship experts Holli and Michael, will MC. MC?

Well, it might not happen because, as I just posted, today is The Rapture. But in case that turns out not to be true…

On June 2, Vegas is hosting the World’s Largest Orgy where hundreds will fuck like mad to attempt to get into the Guinness Book of World Records.

Sin City 8 will takeover Embassy Suites with different themes, contests and parties. (Embassy Suites? It’s not exactly The Bellagio, kids.) So far, 1,000 people have confirmed, with more to come. (Get it?!)

According to the website, amenities provided are;

22 queen size beds
• yoga mats (tantric sex?)
• over 2,000 condoms
• lube
• baby wipes
• tissues
• towels
• bottled water
• breath fresheners
• roaming supply carts

(They left out Purell.)

There will also be “orgy monitors” and an “orgy concierge” on patrol to make sure all participants are comfortable –and consensual.

Masquerade masks, a la Eyes Wide Shut, will provide privacy and cosplay allure to those who want to remain anonymous.

We’re told official Guinness World Record regulations will be observed. I guess someone from the organization has to witness the debauchery firsthand.

In 2015 Japan set an (unofficial) world record with 250 men and 250 in the world biggest orgy to date…

#OnThisGayDay: Judy Garland at Carnegie Hall

April 23, 1961– Judy Garland Plays Carnegie Hall

“I know. I’ll sing them all, and we’ll stay all night.”

She was only 37-years-old, near death, addicted to booze and pills. Judy Garland‘s acting and singing careers were considered finished. A year later, defying doctors’ directives, Garland put all her eggs in one big showbiz basket: A Carnegie Hall Concert. That performance became a moment in time for those who were there and a showbiz legend for everyone else. That evening is still considered the greatest night in entertainment history.

Garland had not worked in films since A Star Is Born in 1954. In 1960, after a period of rest and careful nutrition, along with a more moderate indulgence in alcohol and pharmaceuticals, she had gradually built back a reputation for showing up on time, and giving well-regarded, nicely-reviewed performances in all sorts of venues large and small around Europe and North America. Yet, no one anticipated the Judy mania the evening she brought her act to Carnegie Hall on April 23, 1961. The audience called her back for encore after encore, even asking her to repeat songs after her conductor Mort Lindsey‘s book of arrangements had been sung through.

After the overture had whipped up the audience’s emotions, Garland made her entrance. She was almost a half-hour late, looking exceptionally restored, thin and pulled together. She was greeted by a deafening roar from the crowd, which including theatre performers and showbiz greats on their Sunday night off (theatres were dark on Sunday evenings in those days). The celebrities were zany in love with Garland and so was her usual audience of gay men.

15-year-old Liza Minnelli was there with her younger sister, Lorna Luft, and her brother Joey Luft, just 6-years-old. Joey Luft:

“The one thing I remember, when you’re a kid, adults are supposed to act like adults. They are not supposed to jump out of their chairs, screaming, yelling, running towards the stage. They’re supposed to be in control. There they were, all dressed up in the tuxedos, going nuts.”

The recording of this evening is the only Judy Garland album in my own collection. I don’t need another. She sings each song as if it were her last. The album is still vivid and vital. It was Number One on the Billboard charts for 13 weeks in 1961, and stayed on the charts for 71 weeks. It has never been out of print since. It won four Grammy Awards: Album of the Year (the first live music album and the first album by a female performer to win the award), Best Female Vocal Performance, Best Engineered Album, and Best Album Cover.

Judy At Carnegie Hall is an essential album for all LGBTQ people and anyone who wishes to understand pop culture of the 20th century.

Garland’s return to the top was brief. In 1962, she was nominated for an Academy Award for Stanley Kramer‘s Judgment At Nuremberg. A CBS television special she did with Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin had huge ratings. Impressed, CBS signed Garland to a weekly variety series. Plagued with difficulties from the very beginning and up against Bonanza, the most popular series of the era, The Judy Garland Show only lasted 24 episodes.

We know the rest of the sad story: she couldn’t stay away from the pills and her health deteriorated. In 1967, Garland married Mickey Deans, who supplied her with drugs. In 1969, just three months after her 47th birthday, Deans found her dead of an overdose in the bathroom of their London flat.

The viewing of her body at NYC’s Campbell Funeral Home (the number one choice for dead Broadway performers), was a stupendous spectacle, with tens of thousands of mourners, just a few days before the Stonewall Riots. The coincidence connecting the two events stays in many gay peoples’ minds and cemented Garland’s status as The Ultimate Gay Icon. Garland was a truly great artist and remains an icon to all sorts of people.

The audience at that concert 57-years ago tonight was distinguished by the diversity of the audience as well as the devotion.

Macaulay Culkin Reflects on ’90s-Era (and Party Monster!) Pics with Ellen Degeneres

Forever wowlebrity Macaulay Culkin made a rare public appearance on Ellen yesterday to ostensibly talk about his new podcast, Bunny Ears, but Ellen couldn’t help but fangirl for most of the segment. They talked about his early career, living in a one bedroom apartment with his seven brothers and sisters, early movies like Home Alone and My Girl, then they looked at some old pics – including one from the Party Monster set. One of my favorite pictures OF ALL TIME!

And he looks fantastic, btw, nowhere near 37 years old. Like: how is that even possible? More like 27. Or just plain seven. I’d like to see the picture in HIS attic.

Watch the fun below.

The other big takeaway: That epic pic of Erkle, Doogie Howser, the Fresh Prince, and him – The total ’90s experience in one image!
