Trixie Mattel, or rather her alter ego Brian Michael Firkus (and HIS afro-sportng alter ego), released a live recording of the single “Little Sister” performed in Studio City, California.

“’Little Sister’ is a cautionary tale of being trapped in a small town. I have teenage sisters and this song is a reminder to think big and run fast,” said Trixie in NewNowNext’report.

#RIP: Legendary TV Producer Steven Bochco (Hill Street Blues, NYPD Blue, LA Law, Doogie Howser Etc Etc Etc)

Iconic TV producer Steven Bochco died yesterday morning at home, surrounded by family, according to his personal assistant. He was 74.

“Steven fought cancer with strength, courage, grace and his unsurpassed sense of humor,” spokesman Phillip Arnold said. “He died peacefully in his sleep [at home] with his family close by.”

Famous for dramas like Hill Street Blues, L.A. Law and NYPD Blue, Steven won a total of 10 Emmy Awards during his five decades of envelope-pushing work. His shows were celebrated for their gritty realism, sprawling ensemble casts, and storylines that stretch out over multiple episodes.

In an interview with Pamela Douglas for the 2007 book Writing the TV Drama Series: How to Succeed as a Professional Writer in TV, he explained how he pulled it all together:

“When you end up creating a show with seven, eight, nine characters — ask yourself, how can you appropriately dramatize that many characters within the framework of an hour television show? And the answer is that you can’t. So you say, OK, what we have to do is spill over the sides of our form and start telling multi-plot, more serial kinds of stories.

“Even though any given character may not have but three scenes in an hour, those three scenes are part of a 15-scene storyline that runs over numerous episodes. So that was simply a matter of trying to react to the initial things we did. The show began to dictate what it needed to be. Probably the smartest thing Michael and I did was to let it take us there instead of trying to hack away to get back into the box. We just let it spill over.”

The International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences have announced the nominees for the 22nd annual Webby Awards, and our very own Mama Ru got a nod for Best Host (Podcasts & Digital Audio) for What’s the Tee with Michelle Visage. FAAAABULOUS! Condragulations to everyone who works on the show! He’s up against some very stiff competition, though: Oprah’s SuperSoul ConversationsQuestlove SupremeIntercepted, and Criminal Podcast.

Love Is Dead: Channing Tatum & Jenna Dewan Break Up After Nine Years of Marriage

Well, this is pretty upsetting; I really thought these two were in it for the long haul. After nine years of marriage, Channing Tatum and his wife Jenna Dewan have announced they have “lovingly chosen to separate as a couple.”

People broke the sad news today:

So…We have something we would like to share.

First off, it feels odd that we have to share this kind of thing with everyone, but it’s a consequence of the lives we’ve chosen to lead, which we also happen to be deeply grateful for.  We’re living in an incredible moment in time, but it’s also a time where truth can easily get distorted into “alternative facts” 😉  So we want to share the truth so you know that if you didn’t read it here then it’s most certainly fiction.

We have lovingly chosen to separate as a couple.  We fell deeply in love so many years ago and have had a magical journey together. Absolutely nothing has changed about how much we love one another, but love is a beautiful adventure that is taking us on different paths for now. There are no secrets nor salacious events at the root of our decision — just two best-friends realizing it’s time to take some space and help each other live the most joyous, fulfilled lives as possible. We are still a family and will always be loving dedicated parents to Everly. We won’t be commenting beyond this, and we thank you all in advance for respecting our family’s privacy.  Sending lots of love to everyone, Chan&Jenna.”

They met on the set of their 2006 movie Step Up and began dating shortly after before tying the knot in 2009. They have one daughter, Everly, who turns five next month.

Jenna is currently hosting World of Dance, and Tatum is set to voice the role of Migo in the upcoming animated film, Smallfoot.

In the upcoming movie How to Talk to Girls At Parties – based on a Neil Gaiman short story and directed by Hedwig‘s John Cameron Mitchell – Elle Fanning plays a rebellious alien who finds love with British teen Alex Sharp in the London punk rock scene of 1977.

One night Enn meets Zan (Elle Fanning), a very strange girl who appears to belong to some sort of weird sex cult. It turns out Zan and her people are even stranger than that, as a literally alien culture clashes with the chaotic world of London in the formative days of punk. Nicole Kidman co-stars as Queen Boadicea, an alien priestess with a thing for wigs and rebellion.

Count me in.

Watch the trailer below. And be prepared for Elle trowing up in Alex’ mouth during a drunken kiss.

Neil Gaiman’s original 18-page short story gets a big expansion here, as Mitchell sets out to explore a clash between the wild rule-breaking of punk rock and the conservative forces embodied by Zan’s alien overseers. Zan gets a 48-hour pass to hang out with Enn and find out what life on earth is all about. This leads to Zan encountering intriguing bodily functions and also engaging in “incomplete sexual activity” with Enn. All this seems like the usual coming-of-age business, but with an obviously bizarre twist. However, things get complicated for Zan when, just as she’s learning to live like a punk rocker, her keepers set out to rein her back in.

The season finale of alter-NATIVE is out now! The finale episode, directed by Billy Luther, shows the fashion show that debuts the spring 2017 collection of Bethany Yellowtail, native fashion designer. The collection tells a story of where native women are today but also honors native ancestors.

 

 

The collection features pieces that were influenced by many of the experiences Bethany had throughout the entirety of the season. The fashion show also featured native models, which are so often cut out of the mainstream fashion world.

Before Harry, before Suits, Meghan Markle was just a girl in the grocery aisle, agonizing over which chip to buy for a get-together. (She chooses the chip with the three ingredients over the one with 13, in case you don’t have time to watch the 32-second clip below).

‘Thirteen ingredients? That’s more people than I invited to the party,’ a voice narrates as Meghan picks up another brand’s chips. ‘Unless Denise brings Gary. Ugh, Gary and those short shorts.’

The camera, which initially showed Meghan in black pants, a blue top, a grey jacket, and a white purse, zooms in on her face before as Meghan laments Gary’s potential appearance at the party.

It then turns to the various bags of chips as Meghan grabs a bag of Tostitos Scoops.

‘Light corn, vegetable oil, and salt,’ the voice continues. ‘Yeah. Three ingredients is good.’

Meghan then walks away as a screen states: ‘Tostitos. Surprisingly simple.’

Adele Officiated Her Gay Bestfriends’ Wedding and We Are Jealous

We may not be in a relationship or even close to having prospects, but one thing is for sure, we would KILL for Adele to be our wedding officiant. It was just disclosed that she officiated a wedding in January between her best friends, Alan Carr and Paul Drayton. Though there are now videos of the ceremony it’s safe to say that it was probably the most amazing wedding ceremony ever. Look at Adele’s outfit, if that isn’t proof enough of how magical the ceremony was I don’t know what is.

Breaking: Giant Bugs Attack London!

The Strand was a monthly magazine of short fiction and general interest articles, a sort of London version of The New Yorker. It was published in the UK from 1891 to 1950, running to 711 issues. The magazine’s offices were on Burleigh Street off The Strand, London, hence the name.

The Sherlock Holmes short stories by Arthur Conan Doyle were first published in The Strand. With the serialization of Doyle’s The Hound Of The Baskervilles, readers lined up outside the magazine’s offices, waiting to get the next installment. Other contributors to the magazine included: H. G. Wells, Agatha Christie, Rudyard Kipling, Dorothy L. Sayers, P. G. Wodehouse and Winston Churchill.

“A Lacewing Fly Spreads Consternation in Wellington Street.”

The Strand ran an alarming feature in 1909: If Insects Were Bigger. The editors inserted photographs of ordinary insects into contemporary Edwardian London street scenes, with rather terrifying results, writing:

”What a terrible calamity, what a stupefying circumstance, if mosquitoes were the size of camels, and a herd of wild slugs the size of elephants invaded our gardens and had to be shot with rifles!”

”It is true we are still molested by hordes of wild animals of bloodthirsty propensities. These wild animals only lack the single quality–namely, that of size–to render them all-powerful and all-desolating, and this quality they have not been able to attain owing to the lack of favouring conditions.”

“A Leviathan Grasshopper’s Arrival in Princes Street, Edinburgh.”

“Terrible Attack by a Larva of the Puss-Moth at Covent Garden.”

 

The Strand piece was an early part of a trend and may have been an influence on the Cold War allegory “Giant Bug” films a half century later: Them! is the 1954 American black-and-white science fiction giant insect movie from Warner Bros; I saw it just last week on TCM. It is the story of nest of gigantic ants discovered in the New Mexico desert that become a national threat. Talk about undocumented immigrants! Call in the National Guard!

Mothra (1961) features a giant moth that attacks Japan and spawns 10 sequels. The Deadly Mantis (1957) has 200-foot-long praying mantis, trapped in the ice at the North Pole for millions of years and revived by global warming, that brings havoc and terror to the USA.

Hot Look of the Day? Jenna Fischer Wears a Towel on Jimmy Kimmel After Backstage Wardrobe Malfunction

Office star Jenna Fischer made the most of a terrible situation, gamely walking on to the Jimmy Kimmel Live stage in nothing but jeans and a towel. She also brought along a burgundy dress she said she had planned to wear, explaining:

“So, this was my outfit for tonight,” the actress said, motioning toward her dress. “I waited a little too long to get dressed and then my zipper broke and I panicked.”

Still, she managed to keep her cool.

“You know ― I am a Missouri girl and the show must go on,” she said, before adding, “I’ve never been more comfortable. Mentally, I’m a little freaking out that I’m on a talk show in a towel, but I’m physically very comfortable.”

Love it! Fischer was there to promote her new series Splitting Up Together which stars cutie Oliver Hudson which looks reeeeeally boring soooooo…. There you go.

It was a fabulous evening featuring fabulous art at the WOW Presents Space last weekend. And yes, I’m just getting around to posting the pics right now – I’M TERRIBLE. There were dozens of pieces by artist Plastic Jesus, including a “Stop Making Stupid People Famous” sculpture, a giant mirror with giant lines of cocaine and a giant five dollar bill that was HYSTERICAL. But the piece de la resistance, of course, was the golden statue of Harvey Weinstein in his bathrobe sitting on a golden chaise lounge, entitled “Casting Couch.” Patrons were allowed sit on it and take selfies with the disgraced producer, and that certainly MADE the evening. Oh, Happy Day: Joan Collins Joins Cast of American Horror Story Season 8!

Exciting casting news! Ryan Murphy announced today that Dynasty/Empire of the Ants star Dame Joan Collins will be “thrown in” to the mix of actors on the upcoming season of American Horror Story.

Of course, her role in American Horror Story is still TBD. “Kathy [Bates] and Sarah Paulson have a lot of great stuff to get to do,” Murphy had told EW of season 8. “So, with Evan Peters, the three of them are the leads this year.”

Another possible addition to the cast? Anjelica Huston. CAN YOU IMAGINE? That one, though, is also TBD.

Anyway…

The theme this year is rumored to be “radioactive”… or possibly “the future.” We don’t know for sure but

“I pitched [the theme] to [FX chief] John Landgraf today right after his TCA panel, and he loved it, but he’s asked me not to say what it is,” Murphy remarked during the Television Critics Association tour. “I told him and he fell out of his chair with joy. I think people will like it, it’s different from what we’ve done before, but I always try and do the opposite of what I’ve done on that show.”

Please let it be a remake of Empire of the Ants, please let it be a remake of Empire of the Ants!

In other Ryan Murphy news, he says he’s no longer producing a Monica Lewinsky-themed season of American Crime Story.

“I told her, ‘Nobody should tell your story but you, and it’s kind of gross if they do. If you want to produce it with me, I would love that; but you should be the producer and you should make all the goddamn money,’” he said.

Good for him!

King’s speech focused on the ongoing sanitation workers’ strike, and he reaffirmed his commitment to fight injustice with nonviolent protest, despite government injunctions and many threats on his life.

At the time, Memphis paid black workers significantly lower wages than whites. Several sanitation workers had been killed on the job due to unsafe working conditions. Unlike white workers, black workers received no pay if they stayed home during bad weather; consequently, most black workers were compelled to work even in the worst of conditions.

King was late getting to Memphis after his airline flight to was delayed by a bomb threat. Still, King made it to Memphis and delivered the speech.  Nearing the close, he referred to the bomb threat:

“And then I got to Memphis. And some began to say the threats… or talk about the threats that were out. What would happen to me from some of our sick white brothers? “

“Well, I don’t know what will happen now. We’ve got some difficult days ahead. But it doesn’t matter with me now. Because I’ve been to the mountaintop. And I don’t mind. Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I’m not concerned about that now. I just want to do God’s will. And He’s allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I’ve looked over. And I’ve seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land!  And so I’m happy, tonight. I’m not worried about anything. I’m not fearing any man. My eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord!”

50 years ago today, Walter Cronkite broke the news to his television audience:

“Dr. Martin Luther King, the apostle of nonviolence in the civil rights movement, has been shot to death in Memphis, Tennessee. Police have issued an all points bulletin for a well-dressed young white man seen running from the scene.”

After the speech, King stayed in room 306 at the Lorraine Motel. His last words were to musician Ben Branch, who was scheduled to perform that night at another event. King said: “Ben, make sure you play Take My Hand, Precious Lord in the meeting tonight. Play it real pretty.”

King went out onto the balcony and was standing near his room when he was struck by a single fired from a Remington Model 760 rifle. The force of the shot ripped off King’s necktie. King fell violently backward onto the balcony, unconscious. He was rushed to a hospital, where doctors performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation. He never regained consciousness and was pronounced dead an hour after being shot.

As the news of King’s assassination spread, riots broke out in more than 100 cities across the USA, with some raging for several days. In the week following the shooting in Memphis, hundreds of buildings were burned, thousands of arrests were made, and more than 40 people lost their lives.

That night, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, running for the Democratic presidential nomination to represent the Democratic Party, spoke about the assassination in a speech in Indianapolis. His speech was at a venue in predominantly black neighborhood of the city.

The Indianapolis chief of police told Kennedy he could not provide protection and was worried he would be at risk in talking about the death of King. Kennedy, standing on a flatbed truck, told the audience that King had died. The attendees screamed and crued. Kennedy’s aides were worried that the delivery of this information would result in a riot. Kennedy told those assembled:

“For those of you who are black and are tempted to be filled with hatred and mistrust of the injustice of such an act, against all white people, I would only say that I can also feel in my own heart the same kind of feeling. I had a member of my family killed, and he was killed by a white man.”

Kennedy had never spoken publicly of his brother’s death. He quoted a poem by the Greek playwright Aeschylus:

“Even in our sleep, pain which cannot forget falls drop by drop upon the heart until, in our own despair, against our will, comes wisdom through the awful grace of God.”

His speech is credited with helping prevent rioting in Indianapolis, on a night where many major cities across the country were on fire. It is considered one of the greatest speeches in American History.

The Lorraine Motel is now part of the complex of the National Civil Rights Museum. A wreath marks the spot where King was shot.

 

Kaia Gerber Lies on a Couch and Critics Are in an UPROAR

Chanel is under fire for using 16-year-old supermodel Kaia Gerber (Cindy Crawford‘s look-alike daughter) in a new ad that critics say “sexualizes” her.

In the talked-about shot, “Kaia wears a short, tweed mini dress while reclining on a chaise long.”

Except, WORD POLICE, that’s no chaise long, that’s just a damn couch. I mean, really.

But that’s neither here nor there, I suppose.

We’re supposed to be questioning whether or not Kaia is posed in a provocative manner or if the clothes are somehow not fitting for a 16-year-old girl.

One commenter on Facebook wrote: “Seriously? A 16 year old? What exactly are you promoting?”

A second Facebook user added: “She is beautiful. A beautiful girl. Too young.”

Another said: “It is no doubt that she is a beautiful young lady… too young, too barely dressed as a 16 years old in Gabrielle Chanel owned apartment [sic.]”

Is Kaia’s Chanel campaign teetering on the edge of over-sexualisation? Have we made any improvement since the 1980s when a 15-year-old Brooke Shields uttered “Do you know what comes between me and my Calvins? Nothing.”

It’s up for debate.

I don’t know. I get that she’s awfully young for the modeling industry, but this particular picture doesn’t exactly get me riled up. Lots of 16-year-olds wear little dresses – little tennis dresses and barely-there athletic wear and what-not. And she’s just lying on the couch. Not splayed out in a sexual manner. I certainly don’t think this picture is up there with the Calvin Klein/kiddie porn shoots of the ’90s – now THAT was intentional.
