Stewie Griffin to Reveal His Sexual Orientation on an Upcoming “Family Guy” Episode (Featuring Ian McKellen)

0
0

In an upcoming Family Guy episode airing next month, the issue of Stewie’s sexuality will finally be addressed when the fey, mother-hating one-year old sees a therapist played by guest star Sir Ian McKellen.

Says the show’s executive producer Rich Appel to TVLine: “

“It’s just a two-character episode with Stewie in his therapist’s office for the first time.

“It’s a wonderful episode, and Seth’s performance is spectacular.

“They delve into all sorts of things you would think would come up in a therapy session with a boy like Stewie.

“When Stewie’s with his therapist, they pretty immediately address questions of sexuality. The episode covers that, and then goes to deeper issues for Stewie.

Of course Family Guy has toyed with the notion of Stewie being gay for years (decades!) but has yet to offer a definitive answer. Then again, he’s ONE so I don’t know how important labeling him really is.

The episode, titled ‘Send in Stewie, Please’, will air on March 11.

The 16th Century “Call Me By Your Name” Villa Is Up for Sale! Let’s Put In an Offer!

Variety is reporting that the ultra-lush, groan-worthy Italian villa from the Oscar-nominated Call Me by Your Name is up for sale – and for just $2.7 million it’s a STEAL!

A listing on Home & Loft dates the construction of the villa around the 16th century. According to Elle Decor, the building, which has 14 bedrooms and seven bathrooms, was originally a fortress before it was converted into a home.

via PAPER:

The Italian mansion is nestled in the country’s Lombardy region, on the border of Switzerland, and is surrounded by fruit trees, with 15,000 square feet, open fire places, balconies, terraces and even has a pool. A pool!

Director Luca Guadagnino told the New York Times that he briefly considered buying the villa before he came across the Call Me by Your Name script.

“I had known that house for many years; I even dreamed of buying that house,” Guadagnino toldArchitectural Digest. “Once I realized that I couldn’t afford it and didn’t really want it for my life. I knew where I was going to set the action of the film — this place with faded, aristocratic charm, that a professor and his wife might have inherited but can’t quite keep up.”

Let’s all pool our money and put in a bid!

#MerkinMadness: Pubic Wigs Made a Big Splash at Fashion Week

0
0

Fun fact: Pubic wigs, or merkins, have been around since the 15th century when prostitutes would wear them to combat pubic lice or cover up signs of disease, such as syphilis. Nowadays, though, merkins are mainly used in Hollywood movies, when nudity in period pieces call for a, um, thicker bush than most actresses have today.

But at South Korean designer Kaimin’s “Oriental Garden – Utopian” presentation at New York Fashion Week last Monday, merkins were BACK, baby, making a fabulous fashion statement and getting us all lathered up for their many stylistic possibilities.

via PAPER:

A spokesperson for Kaimin told BBC Three that the designer “chose to represent diversity, uniqueness, and acceptance of individuality with the life-giving human vagina — which was alluded to in the artistic videos projected during the show and was emphasized by the Mohawk on the runway.”

#BornThisDay: “Ghost Singer”, Marni Nixon

0

Photo from Playbill via YouTube

February 22, 1930 – Film Musical’s most unsung singer Marni Nixon

When doing the songs for a movie musical, the usual technique is to pre-record all the singing before actual filming begins. The main reason for doing this is that during a musical number, actors are typically moving around, often dancing, and if it were recorded with a boom microphone, the distance between the performer and the microphone would vary, creating a vocal track that “comes and goes”.

Most musical numbers use many moving camera shots. Sometimes the camera is on a crane and follows the singing actors around the set or location. Usually four or more crew members are needed for cranes and camera dollies and they always make a certain amount of noise. With the singing actor pre-recording the musical numbers and lip-syncing to their playback during shooting, the crew can make noise because the song playback is blaring out of large speakers.

Plus, a pre-recorded song eliminates any unwanted background noise from the location, giving a “clean” recording. For example, if a scene has a city crowd in the background, and the song were recorded “live”,  the people, cars, trucks, even airplanes and weather would compete with the voice. Pre-recording a “clean” musical track and lip-syncing to it on location means that there is no sound competing with the song. During mixing, the sound  can be added, and the sound editors have total control over the yelling and honking of horns because it is added later as a sound effect. Think of Barbra Streisand singing Don’t Rain On My Parade on that tugboat in Funny Girl.

In the Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals, before digital recording, the songs were pre-recorded both to the optical soundtrack and on to phonograph records. On the soundstage or outdoor location, they were played back via the phonograph.

In film production, “dubbing” usually refers to audio recorded after the shooting of the scene, because the dialogue was poorly recorded originally or because of noise on location, or sometimes, because it’s being dubbed into another language.

Also, musical numbers are pre-recorded as opposed to sung “live” because during any number of shots the performer must be able to repeat exactly what they do from take to take, including the same pacing and expression in the song.

In the film version of the musical Les Miserable (2012), rather than pre-recording the songs with an orchestra and then lip-synching on the set, the actors were given ear pieces that fed them a live piano accompaniment while they sang. The director, Tom Hooper called this “groundbreaking”; in the case of Russell Crowe, I found it to be les miserable.

Before filming West Side Story (1961), director/producer Robert Wise, co-director Jerome Robbins, and musical director Irwin Kostal lied to poor Natalie Wood and told her that her singing was just terrific during the pre-recording of the songs. When Marni Nixon came in to sing with the very same orchestra, the players all knew her from her symphony orchestra appearances and they applauded. Wood filmed the songs to her own small vocals, and then Nixon came in and laboriously dubbed every note, without Wood knowing. When Wood finally understood that Nixon would be doing all her singing and not just some of the notes, she walked off the set and did not return for a week.

For The King and I (1956), Deborah Kerr had no problem being dubbed and she asked that Nixon be in on her rehearsals, so that the voice would match the acting intentions, making it seem as if both spoken dialogue and singing were the same voice made by two different artists. If you listen to the soundtrack, you can hear how Kerr and Nixon trade lines that are spoken and lines that are sung to meld into one perfect performance. Not so true with West Side Story.

Nixon:

“Deborah wanted also to look like she was really singing and wanted to be seen using the same muscles. I stretched my neck in the same way and altered the shape of my mouth to emulate hers.”

Wood in West Side Story, Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady (1964), Kerr in The King And I, Rosalind Russell in Gypsy, their singing voices were all dubbed by Nixon. If only Russell Crowe had agreed do the same.

In the film industry this is known as “ghost singing”, rather than dubbing. Because Nixon went uncredited in these films, Time Magazine called her “The Ghostess with the Mostest”.

Nixon got her start in showbiz in 1947, when Ida Koverman, Louis B. Mayer’s powerful personal secretary at MGM and a pal of Nixon’s mother, got her a job delivering mail around the studio to pay for her singing lessons.

Nixon’s ghost singing career began when she sang the voices of the angels heard by Ingrid Bergman in Joan Of Arc (1948). The same year, she provided Margaret O’Brien’s singing voice in Big City and then 1949’s The Secret Garden. Nixon was not only a truly great singer, she was a nimble mimic; in Big City she does 10-year-old O’Brien doing her take on a nightclub singer played by Betty Garrett.

She was so good at this, that Nixon was engaged to sing for Jeanne Crain in Cheaper By The Dozen (1950) and do Marilyn Monroe’s top notes for Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953). She was the voice of Ida Lupino in Jennifer (1953).

In 1957, Kerr requested Nixon to do her singing voice in An Affair to Remember, the same year that she also sang for Sophia Loren in Boy On A Dolphin. She was Janet Leigh’s singing voice in Pepe (1960).

For West Side Story, Nixon also ghost sang Rita Moreno’s voice in the Tonight quintet, in harmony with her voice for Wood, having to distinguish each voice from the other using different timbres. She asked Robert Wise for royalties for her work, but Wise declined. Instead, composer Leonard Bernstein gave her 1/4 of one percent of his royalties from it.

In 1962, Wood did her owning singing in Gypsy, but Nixon still ghost sang Wood’s high notes.

Nixon (C) in “The Sound Of Music” (1965), via YouTube

Despite being heard in all those classic movie musicals, Nixon can only be seen on film twice, briefly in the chorus of Can-Can (1960), and as one of the nuns who wants to know How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? in The Sound Of Music (1965), again working for Wise. Interestingly, she does not do Peggy Wood’s singing as Mother Abbess in The Sound Of Music, it was done by Margery McKay. Nixon, recommend McKay because she sounded like Wood when she was young.

Nixon’s final film voice work was as the grandmother in Disney animation Mulan (1998). She played Fräulein Schneider in Cabaret (1997–98) and appeared in stage productions of The King And I and The Sound Of Music. She was in James Joyce’s The Dead on Broadway in 2000, and as a former operetta star in the Broadway revival of the Stephen Sondheim/James Goldman musical Follies in 2002. In 2003, she was on Broadway in the revival of Nine and in the 2009 Encores! production of the 1932 Oscar Hammerstein II/Jerome Kern musical Music In The Air. Her last stage performance was in a 2008 tour of My Fair Lady in the role of Mrs. Higgins.

Nixon was married three times, including to film composer Ernest Gold (1921-1999). Their son, Andrew Gold (1951-2011) was the singer/songwriter who created the theme song Thank You For Being A Friend for The Golden Girls.

Her terrific memoir is titled I Could Have Sung All Night (2006), written with my friend Stephen Cole.

Photo CBS via YouTube

Nixon was pushed out of the closet as a ghost singer, previously sworn to secrecy, in a bold publicity tour for the film of My Fair Lady, even appearing on the panel television show To Tell the Truth. Her final bow was in the summer of 2016 when she was taken by cancer. She was 86-years-old.

#QueerQuote: “It is Better to be Alone than in Bad Company.” – George Washington

0

All sorts of stuff has been named in honor of George Washington, including the nation’s capital Washington, D.C. The state of Washington is the only state to be named after a U.S. President.

Mount Washington in New Hampshire, the tallest mountain in the Northeast, and the most prominent mountain east of the Mississippi River.

Washington is depicted in stone at the Mount Rushmore. The Washington Monument is one of the best-known American landmarks. The world’s busiest bridge is the George Washington Bridge; the double-decked suspension bridge spans the Hudson River between the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan and Fort Lee, New Jersey.

Several naval vessels are named in Washington’s honor, including the USS George Washington.

Washington’s likeness appears on U.S. currency, including the one-dollar bill and the Washington quarter. Washington appeared on the nation’s first postage stamps in 1847. Since that time, Washington has appeared on many postage stamp, more than all other presidents combined.

Washington’s personal annotated copy of the Acts Passed at a Congress of the United States of America from 1789 includes the Constitution of the United States and a draft of the Bill of Rights. It was sold in 2012, at Christie’s for $9,826,500, a record for a document sold at auction.

George was a glossy monthly magazine centered on the theme of politics-as-lifestyle founded by John F. Kennedy, Jr. Its tagline was “Not Just Politics as Usual”. It was published from 1995 to 2001. The debut issue had a cover which received a great deal of controversy for its image of Cindy Crawford dressed as George Washington photographed by Herb Ritts.

Washington will appear as a very special guest judge on tenth season premiere of RuPaul’s Drag Race on March 22, 2018, which will include a segment on how to powder your hair.

#MeToo: Brendan Fraser Tells GQ About the Sexual Assault that Almost Ended His Career

0
0

There’s a really sad interview with former biggest-star-in-the-world Brendan Fraser who, it turns out, is a lot more interesting than his wide-eyed repertoire of characters he played in movies like Encino Man, George of the Jungle, Dudley Do-Right and Airheads. He talks eloquently and at great length about his son (who is on the spectrum), the difficulties he put his body through doing his own stunts, the death of his mother, and the overwhelming depression that almost destroyed his career. Turns out, he was a victim of sexual harassment at the hands of a Hollywood bigwig, and this is his first time talking about publicly.

It was the summer of 2003. He was at the Beverly Hills Hotel, at a luncheon held by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. On his way out,

he was hailed by Philip Berk, a former president of the HFPA. In the midst of a crowded room, Berk reached out to shake Fraser’s hand. Much of what happened next Berk recounted in his memoir and was also reported by Sharon Waxman in The New York Times: He pinched Fraser’s ass—in jest, according to Berk. But Fraser says what Berk did was more than a pinch: “His left hand reaches around, grabs my ass cheek, and one of his fingers touches me in the taint. And he starts moving it around.” Fraser says that in this moment he was overcome with panic and fear.

“Am I still frightened? Absolutely. Do I feel like I need to say something? Absolutely. Have I wanted to many, many times? Absolutely. Have I stopped myself? Absolutely.”

Fraser eventually was able, he says, to remove Berk’s hand. “I felt ill. I felt like a little kid. I felt like there was a ball in my throat. I thought I was going to cry.” He rushed out of the room, outside, past a police officer he couldn’t quite bring himself to confess to, and then home, where he told his then wife, Afton, what had happened. “I felt like someone had thrown invisible paint on me,” he says now. (In an e-mail, Berk, who is still an HFPA member, disputed Fraser’s account: “Mr. Fraser’s version is a total fabrication.”)

In the aftermath of the encounter, Fraser thought about making it public. But ultimately, “I didn’t want to contend with how that made me feel, or it becoming part of my narrative.” But the memory of what had happened, and the way it made him feel, stuck with him. His reps asked the HFPA for a written apology. Berk acknowledges that he wrote a letter to Fraser about the incident but says, “My apology admitted no wrongdoing, the usual ‘If I’ve done anything that upset Mr. Fraser, it was not intended and I apologize.’ ”

According to Fraser, the HFPA also said it would never allow Berk in a room with Fraser again. (Berk denies this, and the HFPA declined to comment for this story.) But still, Fraser says, “I became depressed.” He started telling himself he deserved what had happened to him. “I was blaming myself and I was miserable—because I was saying, ‘This is nothing; this guy reached around and he copped a feel.’ That summer wore on—and I can’t remember what I went on to work on next.”

Must-See: Levonia Jenkins Reenacts Fergie’s Bizarro “Star Spangled Banner”

I’m sure by now you’ve seen Fergie‘s, um, “jazz-inspired” rendition of the National Anthem at Monday night’s NBA All-Star Game, in which she scatted, groaned, and punctuated it all with wildly inappropriate seductive riffs. It was by all accounts – (except Fergie’s) – a bizarre, if fascinating, failure.

Below, drag terrorist Levonia Jenkins reenacts it, in all its loony glory, at Club Cumming. It might be even more fun than the original. Watch below, it’ll have you in stitches.

And be sure to see Levonia live in “Gender Fluids” at the Laurie Beechman Theater on TOMORROW NIGHT 10PM. Tickets available here.

Lindsay Lohan Rocked a Hijab at a British Fashion Show

Lindsay Lohan was spotted wearing a hijab at the second annual London Modest Fashion Week this past weekend, resparking rumors that she has converted to Islam. You may remember a few years ago she was spotted carrying the Quran in New York (to much hullabaloo) and later claimed she had been “racially profiled” at London’s Heathrow Airport after flying in from Turkey because she was wearing a headscarf.

Then in January, she deleted all the pictures on her Instagram account and changed her bio to ‘Alaikum salam.’

No judgement (except maybe a wee bit for wearing a leather minidress to Modest Fashion Week, lol) — just reporting the facts and hoping she’s happy.

She posted the video below about learning how to wear a hijab and wanting to wear it traditionally.

Hollywood Foreign Press Association Looking Into Brendan Fraser Sexual Assault Allegation

0
0

After a heart-tuggingly sad interview with Brendan Fraser was published this week, in which the Gods & Monsters star opened up about a sexual assault he endured at the hands of former Hollywood Foreign Press Association president Philip Berk, the HFPA has agreed to investigate the allegations.

“The HFPA stands firmly against sexual harassment and the type of behavior described in this article,” an official statement from the HFPA to Us Weekly reads. “Over the years we’ve continued a positive working relationship with Brendan, which includes announcing Golden Globe nominees, attending the ceremony and participating in press conferences. This report includes alleged information that the HFPA was previously unaware of and at this time we are investigating further details surrounding the incident.”

The incident is largely what led Fraser to pull away from the limelight in 2003.

He described his trauma to the magazine in detail:

“His left hand reaches around, grabs my ass cheek, and one of his fingers touches me in the taint. And he starts moving it around,” Fraser told the publication. “I felt ill. I felt like a little kid. I felt like there was a ball in my throat. I thought I was going to cry. I felt like someone had thrown invisible paint on me.”

Berk, for what it’s worth (i.e. NOT A LOT) calls the claims made against him “total fabrication.”

“Mr. Fraser’s version is a total fabrication,” Berk said in a statement to GQ. “My apology admitted no wrongdoing, the usual ‘If I’ve done anything that upset Mr. Fraser, it was it was not intended and I apologize.’”

#FCK!: Kentucky Fried Chicken Ad Hilariously Responds to U.K. Chicken Shortage

0
0

KFC has gone through a somewhat bizarre crisis in the U.K. this week. They ran out of chicken. Now, KFC is apologizing with a creative stunt: rearranging the letters in its name.

Apparently, this shortage forced most of its 900 locations to temporarily shut down (some were reopening with limited menus and shorter hours.) Disappointed fans of the chain were vocal on social media. They even started to get police involved. (Police in London and Manchester had to tell angry KFC fans that the #KFCCrisis is NOT a police matter.)

One KFC fanatic admitted after repeatedly returning to KFC,

I’ve had to go to Burger King.

KFC responded on Twitter where this all played out.

Burger King wasn’t the only one to capitalize on the #KFCCrisis. Iceland Foods offered free breaded chicken strips, while PETA tweeted about the state of the typical British chicken farm. (Fine with me there was no chicken, I’m with PETA.)

In the newspapers The Sun and Metro, KFC ran a full-page print ad crafted by ad agency, Mother London. The ad apologizes for the ordeal while admitting that “a chicken restaurant without any chicken” is “not ideal.”

Founder and group managing director of Frank PR, Andrew Bloch tweeted that the apology was a

masterclass in PR crisis management.

The BBC reported that as of today around 700 of the KFC’s stores in the U.K. have now reopened.

Queen Elizabeth II shocked the fashion world this week. Not by what she wore, but by her appearance at London Fashion Week.

Her majesty, at 91, has her own signature style, but she has never experienced the world of contemporary high fashion from the front row. But she was on hand in person to deliver the Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design to designer Richard Quinn, alongside Vogue, editor-in-chief Anna Wintour.

The internet responded to this collision of British and fashion royalty in a frenzy of GAGGING.

According to the Royal Family twitter account, seeks to recognize and honor

The role the fashion industry plays in society and diplomacy, [and] be awarded annually to an emerging British fashion designer who shows talent and originality, whilst demonstrating value to the community and/or sustainable policies.

Otherwise, everyone else was like,

“Yaaaas, Queen!!”
