Fredrik Eklund and Hubby Derek Reveal They Are Each the Biological Fathers of Their “Miracle” Twins

Last November, Million Dollar Listing: New York‘s Fredrik Eklund and his husband Derek Kaplan welcomed their twins Milla and Fredrik Jr into the world via surrogate. Today, they are revealing to People magazine that Fredrik is the biological father of Milla whereas Derek is the father of Fredrik Jr.

Cool!

Speaking about life with the tots, the real estate agent told People magazine: ‘They’re sleeping well, but sometimes I think those two have a little side meeting. They’ll decide, “Okay, today you’re going to be bad and then when you fall asleep, I’m going to be bad.” They’re in cahoots!

‘Twins are double the work, but definitely double the joy! I read all the baby books, started changing diapers on dolls, I even went to Twiniversity. It’s like going to college to learn about having twins.’

Frederik spoke openly on the show about the pain of  losing two sets of twins to miscarriage and how, after the second setback, announced he didn’t want to do it again, saying he ‘cried so much he can’t cry any more’.

However, during season six of the hit bravo show, the 40-year-old announced they were expecting twins again, thanks to an egg donor and a new surrogate.

‘I felt like I’ve been running this marathon for 40 years and I finally reached the goal. We’re finally going to be daddies. Finally,’ he said.

He told People: ‘This was a long time in the making. So many years and so many difficulties getting here. It’s more than I could have ever wanted.’

So… Hilary Duff Is Playing Sharon Tate In a New BioPic, and, By God, She Looks Pretty Amazing

There are a number of Sharon Tate movies in the works right now, all trying to hit the screen before the 50th anniversary of her murder next year. Quentin Tarantino is doing one.  American Psycho‘s Mary Harron is doing another one with Doctor Who‘s Matt Smith as Charles Manson, which seems… odd. Of course, nothing could be odder than The Haunting of Sharon Tate – “psychological horror film” from Skyline Entertainment – starring Hilary Duff (!!!!) as Sharon Tate, Jonathan Bennett (of Mean Girls fame), playing Tate’s protective ex-boyfriend and confidant, and Lydia Hearst as, I don’t know, a fabulous ’60s chick who befriends Sharon? I’m just guessing here.

Anyway. One would think that a Sharon Tate biopic starring Hilary Duff would be doomed to failure, but if you look at the Instagram pic she posted below, you might be shocked. She looks like she actually… might possibly…. pull it off?

Here’s Sharon…

And here’s Hilary….

Not bad, huh?

And for those of you who don’t know the story of the murder of ’60s film star Sharon Tate, allow Deadline to refresh you:

Tate was married to filmmaker Roman Polanski when she was brutally stabbed to death in August 1969 at the behest of cult leader Charles Manson. Tate’s unborn son was also murdered – the 26-year-old actress was due to give birth in two weeks. She yelled out at the time, “Please don’t kill me. I just want to have my baby” before being horrifically tortured and then slaughtered, stabbed 16 times. The killers used her blood to write “PIG” on the outside door of her house in the Hollywood Hills.

The Haunting of Sharon Tate “takes a look at the last days leading up to Tate’s murder from her point of view. The plot is inspired by an actual quote from Tate, from an interview published a year before her death, wherein she reveals having dreams about ghosts haunting her house and foreseeing her own death at the hands of a satanic cult.”

#BornThisDay: Performer / Activist, Eddie Izzard

Via YouTube

February 7, 1962Edward John Izzard:

“I grew up in Europe, where the history comes from.”

Eddie Izzard is many things: surreal stand-up comic, performance artist, stage and film actor, escape artist, unicyclist, marathon runner, writer, political activist and LGBTQ activist. He defines himself as transgender, he cross-dresses, and he identifies as straight. He claims: “I am a complete boy plus half girl”. He believes that being transgender is a matter of genetics and that someday this will be scientifically proven, having gone so far as to have his own genome sequenced.

Izzard was born in Aden, Yemen, where his English parents worked for British Petroleum.

Izzard started out as a street performer and doing his act in smaller comedy venues in the 1980s. His first break came when he appeared in Hysteria III, the 1991 HIV/AIDS fundraiser held at the London Palladium. He made quite a splash, and began drawing larger audiences. In 1993, he had had his first solo show in London’s West End, Eddie Izzard: Live At The Ambassadors. He was nominated for an Olivier Award and won his first British Comedy Award for top stand-up comedian.

Izzard made his acting debut with the lead in the world premiere of David Mamet’s drama The Cryptogram (1994), and then appeared as the title character in Christopher Marlowe’s Edward II the next year. His first film was starring with Robin Williams in The Secret Agent (1996). His second solo show, Eddie Izzard: Definite Article (1996) brought him his second British Comedy Award. He took that show on tour, including NYC, and thn returned to the West End with a new show, Eddie Izzard: Glorious (1997), which he also brought to the USA.

In 1998, Izzard appeared in Todd Haynes’ ode to Glam Rock, Velvet Goldmine, with Ewan McGregor, brought his new show Eddie Izzard: Dress To Kill (1999) to HBO, winning a pair of Emmy Awards, and he played Lenny Bruce in Peter Hall’s West End production of Lenny. Busy girl!

Izzard continued to act in films, including Shadow Of The Vampire (2000) with John Malkovich and Willem Dafoe; and Peter Bogdanovich’s terrific tale of Hollywood History The Cat’s Meow (2001), in which he played Charles Chaplin. He made his Broadway acting debut in a revival of Peter Nichols’ A Day In The Death Of Joe Egg (2002), which was presented on television. You can see him in Valkyrie (2008), Ocean’s Twelve and Ocean’s Thirteen (2004, 2007), The Avengers (the 1998 spoof of the 1960s camp series one, not the superheroes ones).

via Youtube

Now the good stuff. Izzard:

”I’m a lesbian trapped in a man’s body.”

Izzard has long pursued personal freedom. In 1985, he went out in public for the first time in a dress, heels and full makeup. He was 23-years-old, and he had been planning, and dreading, it for as long as he could remember. He was chased by a group of teenagers who then caught him changing back into his men’s clothing in a public toilet. One of the teens screamed: ‘‘Why were you dressed as a woman?”. Izzard decided in that moment to stop running and to simply explain himself from now on.

The experience proved that there was power in confronting fear rather than avoiding it, and that he would never again let other people define him. Izzard claims that everything became easier after coming out as what he calls ”transvestite or transgender”. Izzard:

”You think, if I can do something that hard, but positive, maybe I can do anything. Before that, I just wore clothes and I had no self-image. As a kid, because you’re younger and you’re thinner, you just have the cute look. Then you think about what you want your look to be, and you think… Actually, I’m a transvestite! But you ignore that, so what do you do? When my standup career was taking off, I was wearing these crap clothes. I just had no sense of anything. I had all these crazy ideas about my act, but the idea of getting in dresses, that I really felt forced to do. When I first came out, I was talking about being a transvestite, and the critics said: ‘He’s a transvestite, but he’s also a mess’. So, I thought I better work on that. If you’re a bloke and you’re wearing a dress, you better try and have a go, or else what the hell are you doing? I needed a lot of work and a lot of help in that area, and that came from other people.”

I admire that Izzard can face down his fears, just like he did with that group of teens. Not only does he perform live in front of huge audiences, he does it despite his fundamental shyness. He became a pilot, despite his fear of heights. He ran 27 marathons in 27 days, despite his lack of any natural athleticism, racing for the South Africa charity for Sport Relief (he significance of the number 27 is from the number of years spent in prison by Nelson Mandela). He began performing his stand-up act in French, German, Arabic, Russian, and Spanish, despite the difficulty of learning these languages and translating his British humor into other cultural contexts.

As reported by World of Wonder writer Trey Speegle: in May 2017, Izzard declared his intention to run for parliament after endorsing Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn in the 2017 UK general election. In an interview with The Guardian, Izzard said:

”The plan was always to run in 2020, though Theresa May has changed that with her failed power grab. So now it’s the first general election after 2020.”

Izzard claims that he would give up performing if he were to become a Labour MP:

”It’s like Glenda Jackson; she gave up acting for 25 years to concentrate on it, then she turns up back as King Lear.”

Izzard:

”Hitler had a ‘moderate’ phase. He pretended he was a cool guy. There are pictures of him in a meeting with the first cabinet, offering a chair to someone and holding the door when coming in. But then some things happened and he entered a radical phase. Bush Jr. also pretended he was a good guy until September 11th, and after that we entered a new destructive phase. Brexit and Trump are very bad news, in any case.”

His memoir Believe Me: A Memoir Of Love, Death And Jazz Chickens was published in November. Izzard can currently be seen as Edward VII in Victoria & Abdul opposite Judi Dench.

”I do feel we trans people have crossed into a place of more political acceptance. It’s allowed now. I have boy genetics and girl genetics.”

#QueerQuote: ”As You Get Older, the Pickings Get Slimmer, but the People Don’t.” – Carrie Fisher

Carrie Fisher (1956-2016)

”I’m a product of Hollywood inbreeding. When two celebrities mate, something like me is the result.”

The whole wide world mourned for Fisher’s shocking passing in December 2016, but here at World of Wonder, we took it especially hard because she was family. In 2010, HBO Documentary President Sheila Nevins suggested World of Wonder make a film version of Wishful Drinking, Fisher’s solo stage show about her struggles with addiction, the pressure of ”Hollywood in-breeding” and becoming a bestselling action figure at just 19-years-old. Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato produced and directed the film. When it was first shown, Los Angeles Times critic Robert Lloyd wrote:

”This is not one of those emotional journeys in which the teller comes finally to forgive herself and the world and we get out our handkerchiefs. Craziness is Fisher’s baseline. Wishful Drinking begins and ends before the image of a padded cell, and clarity the thing she buys with comedy. Life will kill you, she seems to say: You might as well laugh.”

I have loved her since her performance in Warren Beatty’s classic Shampoo (1975) where, at 18-years-old, she held her own working with Beatty, Julie Christy, Goldie Hawn, Lee Grant and Jack Warden. Of her screen debut Fisher wrote:

”One movie which came about by accident was Shampoo. I became Lee Grant’s daughter, who sleeps with Warren Beatty- underage, everything. There was a bad word said in the script. I was supposed to say ‘Wanna fuck?’ in the movie, and my mother asked if I could say ‘Wanna screw?’ instead. My mother was against bad language. I remember that my mother once said: ‘That fucker’. Debbie Reynolds actually said the f-word to me.”

Fisher starts off Wishful Drinking with a delightful story about finding a dead guy in her bed. Then she asks the audience if they have any questions. Among some of the queries she was asked: ”How did you know he was dead?”  Fisher’s answer:

”Have you ever seen a dead body? They’re blue and yellow… which are the international colors of death… and they’re really bad conversationalists”

Her final film, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, released just two months ago, is dedicated to her.

#LGBTQ: Openly Gay Olympic Skater Adam Rippon Refuses To Meet Anti-Gay Veep Pence, “I Think He Should Really Go to Church”

VP Mike Pence is leading the official American delegation at the Winter Olympics and considering his awful track record on LGBTQ rights, figure skater Adam Rippon, the first ever openly gay man from the U.S. to qualify, was less than excited to meet him. Rippon told USA Today,

You mean Mike Pence, the same Mike Pence that funded gay conversion therapy? I’m not buying it. If it were before my event, I would absolutely not go out of my way to meet somebody who I felt has gone out of their way to not only show that they aren’t a friend of a gay person but that they think that they’re sick.

I wouldn’t go out of my way to meet somebody like that. I don’t think he has a real concept of reality. To stand by some of the things that Donald Trump has said and for Mike Pence to say he’s a devout Christian man is completely contradictory.

If he’s okay with what’s being said about people and Americans and foreigners and about different countries that are being called ‘shitholes,’ I think he should really go to church.”

Pence’s press secretary, Alyssa Farah issued a statement on Rippon’s remarks, calling them “misinformed claims”.

The vice president is proud to lead the U.S. delegation to the Olympics and support America’s incredible athletes. This accusation is totally false and has no basis in fact. Despite these misinformed claims, the vice president will be enthusiastically supporting all the US athletes …

But Rippon says he would confront Pence about his anti-LGBTQ views, after the Olympics,

If I had the chance to meet him afterwards, after I’m finished competing, there might be a possibility to have an open conversation. He seems more mild-mannered than Donald Trump. … But I don’t think the current administration represents the values that I was taught growing up. Mike Pence doesn’t stand for anything that I really believe in.

The 2018 Winter Olympics start this Friday in South Korea with full coverage on NBC.

Elon Musk Has Successfully Launched His SpaceX Rocket (Along with His Tesla Roadster Playing Bowie’s “Space Oddity”!!)

<
Ground control to Major Tom…

Yesterday Elon Musk successfully launched his SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket and landed two of the reusable rockets perfectly. That itself was pretty inspiring and amazing, right? But if you caught this bit of news you might have thought, WTF is that? Musk also launched his personal Tesla Roadster. His tweet explained,

Payload will be my midnight cherry Tesla Roadster playing Space Oddity. Destination is Mars orbit. Will be in deep space for a billion years or so if it doesn’t blow up on ascent.

I love the thought of a car drifting apparently endlessly through space and perhaps being discovered by an alien race millions of years in the future.

A few days later, he revealed that it would have a copy of Douglas AdamsThe Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy in the glove box, along with a towel and a sign reading, “Don’t panic.”

Test flights of new rockets usually contain mass simulators in the form of concrete or steel blocks. That seemed extremely boring. Of course, anything boring is terrible, especially companies, so we decided to send something unusual, something that made us feel. The payload will be an original Tesla Roadster, playing Space Oddity, on a billion year elliptic Mars orbit.

How did he end up deciding to launch his car into space, though? SpaceX employees with knowledge of the scheme spoke to Motor Trend on the condition of anonymity to share the story behind the “Red Car for the Red Planet.

“Late in the summer of 2017, the delayed launch of the first Falcon Heavy rocket was finally beginning to take shape, and it was time to talk payload. As Musk would later tweet, payloads on test flights are generally cheap, heavy objects to simulate a real payload without the risk of losing a billion-dollar satellite if the test went wrong, which isn’t uncommon…

The payload team assumed, incorrectly, that Musk would be fine with a typical test payload on such an important launch. That’s not Musk’s style. He wanted a fun payload and sent the team away to come up with one. They came back with their old list of goofy ideas, and Musk loved the car idea. He immediately offered up his personal 2010 Tesla Roadster Sport.

It was quickly determined the car needed to be stripped. After all, the only launch it was designed for was a stoplight drag. All the glass had to go, as did the battery. With the battery out, there was no need to keep the drivetrain in, either, so that went, too. Musk himself has been very open about prototype rockets tending to explode, and no one wants to scatter 1,000 pounds of lithium across the upper atmosphere. Other than the obvious weak points like glass, SpaceX engineers were impressed with the rigidity and durability of the Lotus-based Roadster in their tests.

Any rocket launched into space from a U.S. territory must be licensed by the FAA, and part of that license includes approving the cargo it will carry. Generally, the rules require the regulator to determine if the cargo is a threat to human health and safety to the safety of U.S. property. It also must be in compliance with international space treaties. Stripped of its potentially hazardous components, the Roadster should pass muster, but according to reports, FAA wasn’t happy about the surprise.

In the broader regulatory scope, the international Outer Space Treaty only covers planetary protection, designed to prevent other planets from being contaminated with any sort of life from Earth (such as hardy microbes that could hitch a ride on a spacecraft). Were the Roadster to land on Mars or if it were put in orbit of the planet where it could eventually be pulled down by gravity, SpaceX would be in violation. To get around that, the Roadster will be sent out to the general distance from the sun where Mars orbits and left to drift, never coming close enough to the planet to risk crash landing. Otherwise, legal experts mostly agree there isn’t really any law preventing SpaceX from sending the Roadster into space.”

But the Roadster seems to be going going farther out into the Solar System than originally planned. The rocket carrying the car seems to have overshot that trajectory and has put the Tesla in an orbit that extends out into the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. (Below is a 4+ Hour live-stream that has now ended.)

Check ignition and may God’s love be with you…

YouTube Star Kian Lawley Loses His Role in “The Hate U Give” After Racist Remarks, “We’re All Black Drinking Purple Kool-Aid”

YouTube star Kian Lawley will not appear in the upcoming film based on the bestselling YA novel The Hate U Give after a video of Lawley making racist statements began making rounds.

A spokesperson for Twentieth Century Fox Films said in a statement to CNN.

Due to the controversy surrounding his past comments and behavior, Kian Lawley will no longer appear in ‘The Hate U Give. The studio plans to recast the role of Chris and reshoot scenes as needed.

An undated video of Lawley making racist remarks was uploaded late last month by YouTube user Just Trash and has since removed for a copyright claim by Jc Caylen. In it Lawley says among other things,

We’re all black drinking purple Kool-aid and eating Kentucky fried motherfucking chicken.

(You can see 16 seconds of the video here.) With just 42,000 views, the video still drew enough attention to prompt a response from Lawley two days ago, before he was let go from the film. He wrote on Twitter,

If u don’t learn from ur mistakes, u can never grow as a person. I’ve learned a lot & i am grateful to have the power to change.

Lawley was cast in The Hate U Give, and the film stars Amandla Stenberg as lead character Starr Cater, a teen who is growing up in a poor, primarily black neighborhood but attends an affluent prep school with mostly white peers. She witnesses police shooting her unarmed childhood friend and Starr finds herself in conflict with her two worlds more than ever.

Lawley was set to play Starr’s boyfriend in the film. Following news that he would be replaced in the movie, Lawley said,

I respect Fox’s decision to recast this role for ‘The Hate U Give’ as it is an important story, and it would not be appropriate for me to be involved considering the actions of my past.

With that being said, I am fully aware of the mistakes I have made and strive every day to become a better me than I was yesterday.“

Lawley has been on YouTube since 2010, having started multiple spin-off and collaborative accounts over the years. His most prominent channel has more than 3.3 million subscribers.

Gay US Olympian Adam Rippon Declined Request from Mike Pence to Talk It Out

Rippon, 28, who was selected to his first Olympic team earlier this month after finishing fourth at the U.S. national championships, said that he would prefer not to meet Pence during the traditional meet-and-greet between the official delegation and U.S. athletes in the hours leading to the opening ceremony. It’s possible Rippon would have to miss that event anyway to be part of the team figure skating competition.

It’s OK to Mock Trump’s Hair Disaster

$

As President Trump boarded Air Force One Friday afternoon, his usually plastered-down hair became unstuck and went flying in the wind, leaving his long-concealed scalp bare for all the world to see. It was both horrifying and deeply satisfying and you are COMPLETELY ALLOWED to mercilessly mock him.

Watch below.

via New York magazine (via Towleroad)

It was the worst hair day of what has been a bad hair life. And it may seem cheap and low to mock Trump’s absurd efforts to conceal his hair loss. But Trump is a man obsessed with image in ways that go beyond the normal human concern with looking presentable. Image is Trump’s moral code. He dismisses his political rivals for being short. He sees his succession of wives as visual testament to his own status. He selects his Cabinet on the basis of their looking the part. He conscripts the military as a prop to bathe himself in an aura of presidential grandeur.

Trump’s absurd hair is of a piece with his lifelong attempt to market himself as a brilliant deal-maker and stable genius. So yes, it is okay to laugh when the ruse is exposed.

In a New Interview Quincy Jones Says Michael Jackson “Stole a Lot of Stuff… a Lot of Songs.”

A Los Angeles court ruled in favor of producer Quincy Jones in his lawsuit against the Michael Jackson estate.

New York magazine’s David Marchese interviewed legendary producer Quincy Jones on a wide range of subjects and his comments about Michael Jackson are jaw-dropping…

You worked with Michael Jackson more than anyone he wasn’t related to. What’s something people don’t understand about him?
I hate to get into this publicly, but Michael stole a lot of stuff. He stole a lot of songs. [Donna Summer’s] “State of Independence. The notes don’t lie, man. He was as Machiavellian as they come.” (Originally written by Vangelis and longtime Yes front man Jon Anderson, “State of Independence” was recorded by Donna Summer in 1982. Jones produced Summer’s version, Michael Jackson helped out on backing vocals, and the song’s central riff does sound awfully similar (albeit faster) to the iconic bass riff on Jackson’s hit single “Billie Jean.” It should also be noted that, last year, Jones won a lawsuit over a royalties dispute against Jackson’s estate.” and “Billie Jean.”)

How so?
Greedy, man. Greedy. “Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough” Greg Phillinganes wrote the c section. Michael should’ve given him 10 percent of the song. Wouldn’t do it.” (Phillinganes, an in-demand studio keyboardist, played on a handful of Jackson-Jones collaborations, including the 1979 album Off the Wall, from which “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” comes.)

What about outside of music? What’s misunderstood about Michael?
“I used to kill him about the plastic surgery, man. He’d always justify it and say it was because of some disease he had. Bullshit.”

How much were his problems wrapped up with fame?
You mean with the way he looked? He had a problem with his looks because his father told him he was ugly and abused him. What do you expect?” (Jackson described being abused by his father Joe in a 1993 interview with Oprah, as well as in a 2003 interview with Martin Bashir. “It was really bad,” he recalled during the latter.)

It’s such a strange juxtaposition — how Michael’s music was so joyous, but his life just seems sadder and more odd as time goes by.
Yes, but at the end Michael’s problem was Propofol. and that problem affects everyone — doesn’t matter if you’re famous. Big Pharma making OxyContin and all that shit is a serious thing.” (In 2009, not long after Jackson’s death, the Los Angeles County coroner announced that the singer’s death was caused by “acute propofol intoxication.” Jackson’s doctor, Conrad Murray, had been prescribing the powerful sedative, which Jackson called his “milk,” to help with the singer’s insomnia. In 2011, Murray was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in Jackson’s death.)

Fascinating stuff. He talks about The Beatles being crap musicians, Microsoft’s Paul Allen being as good as Jimmy Hendrix on guitar and more. Read the whole amazing interview here. (Photo, YouTube; via Vulture)

As Badass Boomers, Tish and Snooky understand too well the power of Beauty Bus, given their battle together against Snooky’s breast cancer. Snooky has said that when her “hair grew back after treatment, I colored it purple, because violet is the ultimate healing color and to express my gratitude and joy of life.” Those moments of dignity – and finding beauty even in tragedy – are at the core of Beauty Bus.

Beauty Bus is a Los Angeles based non-profit that delivers dignity through beauty services and compassionate support to chronically and terminally ill patients and their caregivers. We have delivered over 15,000 free services to men, women and children – in their homes and in hospitals from City of Hope to UCLA to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Beauty Bus has also donated over 45,000 Bags of Beauty, filled with full-sized donated products so the pampering can continue after the visit. Our oldest client is 101 – and our youngest client is 1!!

Sounds like an amazing cause!

Amy Adams Channels Andy Warhol, Liza Minnelli, Debbie Harry, Dolly Parton in Brilliant Garage Magazine Photo Shoot

For her Garage magazine interview, Amy Adams recreated Warhol‘s famous Polaroid photos of the 1970s, morphing from Dolly to Debbie to Liza to Andy all in the course of an afternoon, and apparently staying in character between shots. Fabulous (even if the Liza pics look like Katy Perry and the Dolly Partons look more like Elke Alig). You can read the article here, but really all you need to know is in the pics: She’s a chameleon, she’s got a wicked sense of humor, and she seems like she’s be fun to hang out with.

“Like most people,” Adams tells me over Skype one night in January, “I have a lot of joy and lightness and also anxiety and sadness and darkness. I’m really lucky I don’t have to hide any of that in my work.”

Lucky for US.

I’m GASPING! The gayest gay icon OF ALL TIME meets the CUTEST BROADWAY STAR of the modern era… and together they star in an hour long musical/comedy produced by camp king Ryan Murphy… which also happens to star Gwyneth Patrow,,,, I mean…. It’s JUST TOO MUCH to take in! But THR assures us it’s all real, and it’s happening. The Politician will be on Netflix… and already has a two season order!

The Politician revolves around Platt’s Payton, a wealthy Santa Barbara resident. Each season will center on a different political race that the character is involved in. Platt is expected to have musical numbers in the show. Production for the show is expected to start in the late summer.

Online scuttlebutt has it that Streisand will have a hand at directing a few episodes and will DEFINITELY be singing in them. So there IS something to look forward to in these dark times.

via THR:

The Politician joins a roster of Murphy’s scripted originals that also includes Fox’s recently renewed drama 911, FX anthologies American Horror Story, American Crime Story and Feud, plus ongoing drama Pose and Netflix’s Ratched.

This is Paltrow’s latest collaboration with Murphy and Falchuk. The actress, who is engaged to Falchuk, won an Emmy for her guest turn on Glee. She also was working with Murphy to prep a TV version of One Hit Wonders, the project they had at one time set up as a feature film.

#BornThisDay: Actor, Jack Lemmon

“Some Like It Hot” United Artists, via YouTube

February 8, 1925Jack Lemmon:

“Death ends a life, not a relationship.”

The American Film Institute named Billy Wilder’s Some Like It Hot (1959) the Best Comedy of All Time. I realize that best lists are a bore, but few would dispute the status of Some Like It Hot. And, how cool that the most entertaining comedy of the last century features a pair of American males in drag.

Drag is used to perfection in this famous film whose theme is deception. A pair of small-time jazz musicians: Joe, a saxophone player (Tony Curtis), and Jerry, a bassist (Lemmon) accidentally witnesses the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. Pursued by a Chicago mobster, “Spats” Colombo, played by George Raft and his gang, they dress as women and join an all-female band on a train to Florida. There Joe, who has become Josephine, makes one more switch, pretending to be an oil baron to attract the band’s vocalist, Sugar Cane, played to perfection by Marilyn Monroe. Jerry, who is now Daphne, becomes the object of affection for the insatiable Osgood Fielding III (Joe E. Brown), a motor-mouthed millionaire. It has a happy ending with both couples heading for a moonlit yacht.

Some Like It Hot, with a screenplay by Wilder and I.A.L. Diamond is endlessly quotable. The closing zinger, Daphne yanks off her wig declaring herself to be a man, and Osgood replies: “Nobody’s perfect”, ranks up there with “Here’s looking at you, kid.“, “Toto, I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.”, and “Fasten your seatbelts. It’s going to be a bumpy night.” It is the funniest final line in film history, and just happens to be unambiguously queer.

It is amazing in the way drag liberates Lemmon’s character.  At the start, he is easily manipulated. But, once he begins to explore his feminine nature, he becomes increasingly strong and self-assertive, and he goes directly for what he wants, which is to marry another man.  The message, in 1950s America, could hardly have been more subversive. The gayness is played for laughs, of course; it was 1959 after all.

Made at the height of the conformist Eisenhower era, film is notable for playing with the idea of gayness, which led to its being released without approval from the Motion Picture Production Code. The code had been gradually weakening in its scope during the early 1950s, due to increasing social tolerance for previously taboo topics in film, but it was still officially enforced. The overwhelming success of Some Like It Hot is considered one of the final nails in the coffin for the Hays Code.

The film cuts against the cultural grain so sharply it’s amazing that it even got made. Yet, that might be why it connected so forcefully with fans and remains a classic.

It was also the first film that I really took note of Lemmon. My parental units took me to see it at the drive-in theatre, and I never have quite recovered. Seeing Some Like It Hot at an early age changed me, and it also brought a life long love for Jack Lemmon, the man and the actor.

He was the first actor to go from winning an Academy Award for a supporting role, in Mister Roberts (1955), to winning a second Oscar for a leading role, Save The Tiger (1973). Appropriately, the first award was for a comic performance, and the second a dramatic one.

Lemmon thrived on close professional associations. With Wilder, he made seven films, beginning with Some Like It Hot: The Apartment (1960), The Fortune Cookie (1966), Irma La Douce (1963), Avanti! (1973), The Front Page (1974) and Buddy Buddy (1981). He made six films with director Richard Quine, but his longest and most fruitful on-screen partnership was with the actor Walter Matthau.

Matthau and Lemmon first co-starred in The Fortune Cookie with Lemmon playing an injured television sports reporter and Matthau as his crooked lawyer drooling over the prospect of damages. Matthau won the Academy Award for his work. The two actors became the firmest of friends and they worked together in seven more films, including Kotch (1971), the only film Lemmon directed.

Their most famous film together was, of course, The Odd Couple (1968), based on the Neil Simon stage comedy, in which they played two gentlemen sharing a Manhattan apartment. Their relationship is a sort of distorted reflection of a married couple. The gay subtext is hard to miss. Lemmon:

“I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention my favorite leading lady. Without a doubt, it’s Walter Matthau.”

At the start of his career, Lemmon used his best tricks: double takes, startled eyes, and grimaces. He was ofen cast as a character who is morally malleable. In Wilder’s The Apartment (1960), he lent his apartment to his bosses for sexual trysts; in Save The Tiger, he considers committing arson to collect insurance money. In Buddy Buddy, Lemmon plays a would-be suicide continually sabotaging the work of a bungling hit-man played by Matthau.

In one of my favorite Lemmon permeances, The China Syndrome (1979), he played a senior employee at a nuclear power station about to suffer a Chernobyl-style meltdown. The character was torn between loyalty to the company and his conscience, and hesitation was shown in close-ups in his face. He was oddly overlooked for an Academy Award.

His gives a master class in film acting in David Mamet’s Glengarry Glen Ross (1992), for which he won the top acting prize at the Venice Film Festival but was again passed over at the Oscars.

My number one Lemmon performance is in Missing (1982), in which he plays a Right-wing American father, whose trust in the U.S. government is destroyed when he confronts the lies of its representatives in Chile as he in searches for his son who disappeared during the 1973 coup. For this one, he was Oscar nominated and won Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival.

After graduating from Harvard, Lemmon served in the U.S. Navy for three years. Then, he worked as waiter while trying to get work as an actor. He had a rich career in radio and television, with hundreds of performances in early television shows.

Lemmon’s television work caught the attention Columbia Studios who thought he would be perfect to star with Judy Holliday in the film It Should Happen To You (1954) directed by George Cukor. He signed with the studio for seven years but stayed for 10. His contract was for two pictures a year, but he was free to make one film for another studio each year. He appeared in four Broadway plays, and took a year off from Columbia, something no contract player had even done before.

He was often cast as the agreeable, naive do-gooders, typecasting he seemed unable to escape. Columbia cast him in musicals, such as My Sister Eileen (1955) and Three for the Show (1955), and as a contemporary warlock in the gay allegory Bell, Book And Candle (1959).

Away from Columbia, he had more interesting roles. Warner Bros cast him as the sly, lecherous Ensign Pulver in Mister Roberts, for which he won his first Oscar.

Lemmon made 50 films in 40 years. His work had a certain glibness that he was not always able to shake until his dramatic role in Blake Edwards’ Days Of Wine And Roses (1962), a study of a advertising man and his wife, played by Lee Remick, sliding into alcoholism.

He never played gay characters, but there is Mass Appeal (1984), in which Lemmon plays a sexually ambiguous Catholic priest torn between his affluent congregation and an undeniable connection to a gay seminary student played by real life gay actor Željko Ivanek; and in 1971’s Avanti!, there is a scene in which Lemmon and a fellow airline passenger are mistaken for lovers by everyone else on the plane. Wilder said that he wanted to make Avanti! as a gay film, with Lemmon’s character coming out in the course of the story, but he couldn’t get backing for it and was forced to make it ”straight”.

Throughout his career, Lemmon returned to the theatre. I saw him live on stage was in 1975, when he and Matthau starred with Maureen Stapleton in a glorious production of Sean O’ Casey’s Juno And The Paycock at L.A.’s Mark Taper Forum, and in 1978, playing a dying actor in Tribute on Broadway.

At the 1998 Golden Globe Awards, he was nominated for for his role in Twelve Angry Men losing to Ving Rhames. After accepting the award, Rhames asked Lemmon to come on stage and, in a move that stunned the audience, gave his award to him. The Hollywood Foreign Press had a second award made and sent to Rhames.

One can find fault with much of Lemmon’s work. His acting was sometime too big for the screen and he liked to be liked too much. But, Lemmon was well liked in the industry and loved by film fans. His best qualities were intelligence and vulnerability. He played characters who struggled with their own flaws and with the world.

Lemmon was taken by cancer in 2001. He fought the cancer privately for two years. He is interred at Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery, buried near Matthau, who died exactly one year before Lemmon. His gravestone reads like a title screen from a film: “Jack Lemmon in”.
