Trump and Pence to Allow Health Care Professionals to Deny Services to LGBTQ Americans

$

CNN via YouTube

The current Administration just keeps sticking it to the LGBTQ community. While campaigning in 2016, POTUS said he would be different, he would be the first Republican president to embrace LGBTQ people. He uttered the acronym L, G, B, T … Q at the 2016 Republican convention, barely able to get the letters out of his tiny mouth. He held up a Pride Flag at a campaign event. He initially defended the right of Caitlyn Jenner to use the bathroom that aligns with her gender identity. He tweeted: ”Thank you to the LGBT community! I will fight for you while Hillary brings in more people that will threaten your freedoms and beliefs”. Well, we thought, he is from liberal NY, how anti-LGBTQ can he be, really? Since day one of his presidency, he has continued to roll-back the rights of queer people in America.

Now, his administration’s Department of Health and Human Services under the direction of acting director Eric Hargan, has announced the creation of a dangerous division of the Office of Civil Rights allowing healthcare providers to deny services to LGBTQ people based on their deeply held religious beliefs.

This new office is intended to give Right Wing Christians permission to discriminate against LGBTQ citizens, and provide outreach and technical support for religious right wing groups that oppose LGBTQ Rights.

This is just another action by the administration to diminish the lives of LGBTQ Americans. Earlier this year, POTUS directed the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to censor seven words from their 2018 budgets, including: Transgender and Diversity. The other words to avoid: Entailment, Vulnerable, Evidence-Based and Science-Based.

He also erased the LGBTQ citizens from the National Survey of Older Americans, and his budget proposed cuts to funding of HIV /AIDS research, guidance protecting transgender youth in schools was rescinded, and World AIDS Day passed without any mention of LGBTQ people. That’s just in his first year!

This new office in the Department of Health and Human Services would literally put the lives of LGBTQ people in danger. These ”Religious Freedom” directives make a mockery of the fundamental religious protections provided by the Constitution. There is no “Freedom of Religion” to use faith as a weapon to make people’s lives miserable.

Roger Severino, director of the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Civil Rights, has actively opposed protections for minority communities. In his previous role as Director of the DeVos Center for Religion (Secretary of Eduction Betsy DeVos‘s pet project) and his work at the hate group Heritage Foundation, Severino has spoken out against the regulations in place that protect the rights of LGBTQ people.

Sarah Kate Ellis, CEO of GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) stated:

“Any healthcare worker who has moral objections to providing medically necessary care to an entire vulnerable population is in the wrong line of work. Denying a transgender person – or any person – life saving care if they walk into an emergency room is far from a moral act, it is unjust and dangerous. Trump, Pence, and Trump’s appointees have tried time and again to establish blatantly bigoted policies that harm transgender and gender non-conforming Americans, and history will neither forget nor forgive this Administration’s attacks on its own people.”

The nonprofit organization National Women’s Law Center reports that 27% of LGBTQ people have been denied health care. And a poll conducted by NPR and the Harvard University T.H. Chan School of Public Health found that 18% of LGBTQ Americans are afraid to visit the doctor’s office because of the way they have been treated.

POTUS and Pence are waging a culture war against LGBTQ Americans. Their aim is to roll back rights and protections, but also general acceptance of LGBTQ people in society and culture.

Earlier this week, POTUS declared January 16: “Religious Freedom Day”. His seemingly innocuous proclamation, which claims to celebrate “Americans from diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds” contains references to politicized policies that appeal to POTU’s and Pence’s Right Wing Christian base.

POTUS’s proclamation included this:

“Unfortunately, not all have recognized the importance of religious freedom, whether by threatening tax consequences for particular forms of religious speech, or forcing people to comply with laws that violate their core religious beliefs without sufficient justification. These incursions, little by little, can destroy the fundamental freedom underlying our democracy.”

#LGBTQ: Out Athletes Say They Would Pass on a White House Invite if They Medal at the Winter Olympics in South Korea

Rippon, photo NBC Sports via YouTube

Anti-LGBTQ, religious fanatic Vice President Mike Pence, has been chosen to lead the U.S. Olympic delegation in Pyeongchang, South Korea next month. And one of America’s very best male figure skaters Adam Rippon is having none of it. Rippon is the 2016 figure skating National Champion, and the first openly gay athlete to be selected to compete for the U.S. at an Olympic Winter Games. Yesterday, Rippon told USA Today that he was disappointed to be making his Olympic debut alongside one of the most virulently anti-LGBTQ politicians in America. Rippon:

“You mean Mike Pence, the same Mike Pence that funded gay conversion therapy? I’m not buying it. If it were before my event, I would absolutely not go out of my way to meet somebody who I felt has gone out of their way to not only show that they aren’t a friend of a gay person but that they think that they’re sick. I wouldn’t go out of my way to meet somebody like that.”

Rippon compared Pence’s fanatical anti-LGBTQ positions with President Barack Obama’s decision to pick a U.S. delegation at the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi with mostly openly gay athletes in protest of Russia’s crackdown of LGBTQ rights. Rippon also stated that he wouldn’t attend the post-Olympics celebration at the White House, but he did say he would consider having an “open conversation” with Pence.

Two-time Olympic skater Johnny Weir, who was not publicly out of the closet during his time competing, has praised the openly gay athletes competing at the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Weir, NBC Sports, via YouTube

Weir, who does commentary for NBC Sports, tweeted:

“I am so thrilled that there are out representatives of the LGBTQ community competing at the Olympic Games. Notably, @guskenworthy & @Adaripp among others. It is very brave for all of us to live our truths whether on the global stage or in our own homes.”

@guskenworthy is Gus Kenworthy, who came out after the Winter Olympics in 2014, where he won the Silver Medal and went home with a pack of stray dogs he adopted in Sochi.

Kenworthy, Photo by Jeff Swinger, USA TODAY Sports via YouTube

Kenworthy, who has yet to qualify for the Olympics in Pyeongchang, claims that he is fine with the moniker “the gay skier”.

26-year-old Kenworthy called himself a “coward” for hiding who he was during his first Olympic experience, but he’s looking forward to the opportunity to represent the LGBTQ community this time around in South Korea. Kenworthy:

“I’ve got more eyeballs on me. My platform’s a lot bigger. I signed a bunch of Olympic sponsors and I have the LGBTQ audience watching me, and I want to do right by them.”

Kenworthy stated that “doing right” means representing America without supporting the POTUS. Kenworthy has been particularly outspoken on Trump’s administration, which he believes has forced the LGBTQ community to take a step backwards after the progressive policies of Barack Obama’s administration.

He also says that he would not accept a White House invite if he medals in Pyeongchang:

“I won’t go. I have no interest in going and faking support. I’m proud to be competing for the U.S. I’m proud to be an American, but I don’t want to show any support for that cabinet. I don’t want to go shake his hand.”

Kenworthy made international headlines when he and his boyfriend stayed behind in Russia for more than a month after the closing ceremonies as they fought to secure permits and paperwork to finalize the adoption of the homeless dogs.

Kenworthy has qualifying races next week. Here’s hoping he makes the team!

Swoon-Worthy Must-Hear Song of the Day: Troye Sivan’s “The Good Side”

$

I just don’t get why Troye Sivan isn’t having number one radio hits and baskets of Grammys thrown at him and Entertainment Weekly covers lavished  upon him – the kid is a STAR. And one of the most talented singer/songwriters in the game. Hopefully his appearance on SNL this week might get the ball the rolling. In the meantime, really just sink into his new song “The Good Side” released today. It’s bliss, pure and simple. “Why is this song taking me back to a time i never experienced?” asks on YouTube commenter. “This makes me feel sad and happy at the same time” write another.

I urge you to give it a listen below. .

There’s kind of a Simon & Garfunkel-y vibe to it. I mean that in the best way.

via Billboard:

The guitar-infused ballad with lovely late-arriving synths comes from his upcoming sophomore album, due out this spring. In it, he sings about his acknowledgement of his wrongdoings in a relationship — which many fans believe was the same relationship he was singing about on his debut album Blue Neighbourhood.

Although he apologizes and sympathizes for his faults, he says he still “got the good side of things”: “I got the good side of life/ Travelled the universe twice/ So many thoughts I wanted to share/ But I didn’t call because it wouldn’t be fair.”

Also listen to his other new hit single – the sultry “My My My!” – released last week, below. It’s a helluva video.

Recently jailed steroid distributor Richard Rodriguez, of the Miami-based Wellness Fitness Nutrition LLC (WFN), is singing like a canary, naming names of prominent Hollywood superstars he says were involved in his company before it was raided by the DEA last February.

Says Rodriguez in a new YouTube video interview:

“At the end I’m just trying to clear my name and just make people well aware, there’s a lot more people out there that were involved and are associated with my company that many individuals did not know.”

via ONTD:

Rodriguez is currently in prison but is now naming Mark Wahlberg, Josh Duhamel and WWE Superstar Roman Reigns as having involvement in some capacity with his company in a video interview posted to YouTube.

Reigns was suspended from the WWE for 30 days in 2016 due to his alleged use of Adderall which is banned in most sporting leagues.

Stormy Daniels Spanked Trump with a Copy of Forbes! (With His Picture on the Cover!?)

The fall 2006 cover of Forbes features Trump with Donald Jr. & Ivanka. Eww.

It certainly is Stormy out this week, huh…?

A new scandal for Trump was set off by The Wall Street Journal when it reported that Michael Cohen, Trump’s lawyer, paid porn star Stormy Daniels $130,000 to hush up about sexual encounters she had with the future POTUS. Cohen’s statement from Daniels denied she had engaged in any “sexual and/or romantic affair” with Trump… but he said nothing about the payment.

Then, according to Mother Jones,

Slate’s Jacob Weisberg reported that in 2016, Daniels, whose given name is Stephanie Clifford, told him that in 2006 she and Trump began a sexual relationship that lasted nearly a year. The Daily Beast published a story citing friends of Daniels saying she had told them about a fling with Trump. In Touch published an interview with Daniels from 2011 in which she herself described having a sexual affair with Trump. And Mother Jones has learned that Daniels years earlier talked about having had a sexual relationship with Trump—and in lurid detail. According to 2009 emails between political operatives who were at the time advising Daniels on a possible political campaign, the adult film actor and director claimed that her affair with Trump included an unusual act: spanking him with a copy of Forbes magazine.

‘She says one time he made her sit with him for three hours watching ‘shark week.’ Another time he had her spank him with a Forbes magazine.’

This was confirmed to Mother Jones that they exchanged these emails.

The campaign consultant who wrote the email to says that Daniels said the spanking came during a series of sexual and romantic encounters with Trump and that it involved a copy of Forbes WITH TRUMP ON THE COVER.

And you thought this story couldn’t get ANY creepier. Another cover, of The Daily News this time, says that Trump also told Daniels,

“You are just like my daughter.”

Say it with me.

Eww.

Guest Judge Nancy Pelosi Tweets To “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars” Queens, “You Betta Werk!”

Democratic House leader Nancy Pelosi.

As James St. James scooped yesterday on The Wow Report, there are some surprising guest judges on this season of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars; like Adam Lambert, Kristin Chenoweth, Vanessa Hudgens, Marc Jacobs, and Vanessa Williams among other luminaries. But according to The Washington Post, top House Democrat Nancy Pelosi might NOT be the biggest surprise of all.

Yes, kids, the former House speaker will be a guest-judge in this new season of All Stars, but Pelosi has been a longtime supporter of the LGBTQ community. (She oughta be, her district includes San Francisco.) A rep for Pelosi says that was a major factor that made her want to sign up; showing solidarity with LGBTQ community, while it is currently being attacked by the Trump administration.

Pelosi is reportedly a fan of the show and its motto of being proud of exactly who you are.

Of course, her appearance is already in the can, as they say, and The Post couldn’t pry any spoilers out of her (better not!) but her spokesman did say,

She had a ‘fabulous’ time.

You know that Mama Ru would show her nothing less!

She also tweeted out yesteday,

All I can say is, you betta werk! Had a fabulous time with @RuPaul and good luck to all the queens. #DragRace”

As the government looks like it is about to shut down tonight at midnight, we could all say the same thing to the GOP. You betta werk!

Watch the premiere of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars 3 VH1, this coming Thursday, January 25th at 8. We’re saving you a seat.

In 1978, Madonna Louise Ciccone dropped out of college and moved to NYC. She worked at Dunkin’ Donuts while taking classes at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and she  wasoons hired as a company member with Pear Lang Dance Theater.

Madonna:

“It was the first time I’d ever taken a plane, the first time I’d ever gotten a taxi cab. I came here with $35 in my pocket. It was the bravest thing I’d ever done.”

Madonna was returning from a rehearsal, when two men held her at knifepoint and sexually assaulted her. Madonna:

“The episode was a taste of my weakness, it showed me that I still could not save myself in spite of all the strong-girl show. I could never forget it.”

Madonna became the world’s bestselling female artist and one of the most famous people on the planet. It is my understanding that The Gays love her. I know I do.

I’ll admit I missed this one when it first appeared on The Late Late Show with James Corden. A Tinder date gets off to a not-so-great start when a large man/fish shows up at a restaurant to meet a human female, played by The Shape of Water‘s, Sally Hawkins. She asks him,

Which part of Michigan are you from?”

“The lake.“

But the two actually seem to hit it off until… oh, I won’t spoil it.

Last August, after a brave two-and-a-half year battle with breast cancer that saw her lose her hair, TV icon Shannen Doherty announced the good news that her cancer appeared to be in remission. She was happy but tentative about the diagnosis, telling her Instagram fans:

‘Even with positive results, it’s the next five years that determine so much. So, let’s see how today turns out and then day by day,’ she said, before offering up some encouragement to her fans.

‘Live life to the fullest. Cherish every second. Love fiercely. And thank God for every second.’

Last night, she walked the carpet at Paramont Network Launch Party, looking absolutely radiant – and we couldn’t be happier for her.

You can follow her cancer journey, here, here and here.

Nora Burns Brings Sweetly Nostalgic “David’s Friend” – About Her Friend Who Died of AIDS – to LA, January 30 and 31

David’s Friend
2 Nights only
Tues/Wed Jan 30 & 31st 8pm
Casita del Campo
Tickets $20 door/$15 advance at Brownpapertickets.com

Self-described “writer, performer, fag hag, mother, friend, and New Yorker” Nora Burns – of the comedy troupe Unitard – is performing her acclaimed one-woman show David’s Friend in LA later this month.

Described as

“A comic odyssey about crazy love… loss.. cruising… disco… drag queens… strippers… sex… the ’70s… AIDs… and New York City… from tall tales to torrid truths. A fast-paced multi-media celebration of passion, pleasures, and the power of great dance songs…”

The show celebrates her friendship with the gorgeous and gone-too-soon David Burns (his chosen surname to match hers), who died of AIDS in 1993. She writes:

“It’s weirdly hard to describe, because it’s not a tribute or a memorial service, but about a year ago I started desperately missing my best friend who’d died 22 years ago and I just had to do something, so I made a show and it’s about him and our crazy friendship, and crazy NYC and what it was like to live in an amazing time, but when so many of our friends were dying and how we’re just coming out of our stupor now, but it’s also funny and silly and about an amazing person who never got to grow up and we never got to grow old together – so blahblahblah, but people seemed to like it, from old queens who knew from whence it came, to a bunch of 22-year-old kids who somehow related, so doing it again and seeing how it goes!”

Written and performed by Nora Burns with direction by Adrienne Truscott, dramaturgy by Lucy Sexton, and visual collaboration by Len Whitney, featuring Billy Hough, this fast-paced show is a multi-media celebration of friendship, fun, freaks, fag hags, youthful passion, changing times, emotions, memories, Manhattan and music that moves your feet to a disco beat.

“A feisty and funny one-woman show…..her odyssey will bring alive the period and its pleasures (and poisons) with pungent animation…a continual pleasure”
“Charles Isherwood, The New York Times

“The show delivered on all fronts — it’s funny, it’s nostalgic, it’s touching, it’s poignant and it’s smart.”
Kenneth in the 212

“The beauty of “David’s Friend” is, you didn’t have to be there. Burns was, and she brings it alive for the rest of us.”

Helen Mirren on Men Exposing Their Junk to Her: “It’s Horror”

As we have learned over the last couple of months, sexual harassment – in Hollywood and elsewhere – is much more pervasive than most people could have ever imagined. The #MeToo movement is a daily reminder of the day-to-day struggles of women (and men) everywhere. Earlier this week, Sharon Stone was asked if she’d ever experienced sexual harassment in Hollywood. Her answer? She laughed uproariously for five minutes. OF COURSE SHE HAS. She was an actress. In the ’80s and ’90s. It was an inevitable byproduct of the job.

Eternal beauty Helen Mirren was recently asked the same question. Her experience in the industry, though, was slightly different, she says:

“I have never experienced [sexual harassment]… in Hollywood. Because [when] I came to Hollywood, I was in my 30s. I was too old. It doesn’t happen to you unless you’re very young,” she said.

That doesn’t mean, however, she hasn’t seen her share of unwanted penises.

“When I was between 16 and 23, 24 — men would expose themselves to me often, I would say about once a week…on the subway, on the tube, on the bus, walking down a road and it was like, ugh… It’s not like you’re gonna go, ‘Oh my god, that’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.’ It’s the opposite. It’s horror.”

God, men are just the WORST, aren’t they?

Celebrating Dolly Parton’s 72nd Birthday with Some of Her Earliest Photos & Performances

“I’m not offended by dumb blonde jokes because I know I am not dumb. I also know I am not blond.” Dolly Parton

I love Dolly Parton. I love her big voice, her big hair, and her big boobs.

From “Oprah” via YouTube

I also admire her. Parton is passionate about early childhood education, and she has done amazing, important work to give kids who are born in her part of the Appalachian Mountains a good start in life with her Dollywood Foundation, which runs The Imagination Library, providing rural Tennessee kids a new book every month until their fifth birthdays. So far, Parton and The Imagination Library have given away more than 60 million books.

Parton is an outspoken advocate for Women’s Rights. A good Christian girl, like Tammy Faye LaValley Bakker Messner, she seems to have actually read The Bible and gets the loving message provided by the life of Jesus. She has been an especially good friend to her gay fans, a longtime supporter Gay Rights and Marriage Equality, even appearing on the cover of Out Magazine.

Parton’s production company, Sandollar Productions, which she started with her longtime manager/business partner/close friend, the late, great Sandy Gallin, an openly gay man who we lost last spring, chose, as its first project, the Academy Award winning documentary about the making of the AIDS Quilt, Common Threads (1989).

The day after she graduated from high school in 1964, she moved to Nashville. Her initial success came as a songwriter, and she wrote several charting singles during this time, including two Top10 hits: Bill Phillips’s Put It Off Util Tomorrow (1966) and Skeeter Davis’s 1967 hit Fuel To The Flame. Her songs were recorded by many artists during in the late 1960s, including Kitty Wells and Hank Williams Jr. She signed with Monument Records in 1965, at 19-years-old; she initially was pitched as a pop singer.

Parton released a string of singles, but the only one charted, Happy, Happy Birthday Baby, yet it did not even crack the Billboard Hot 100. She expressed wanted to record country material, but Monument resisted, thinking her unique voice was not suited to the genre.

After her song Put It Off Until Tomorrow, recorded by Bill Phillips (with Parton, uncredited, on harmony), went to Number Six on the Country Charts in 1966, the label allowed her to record country. Her first country single, Dumb Blonde reached Number 24 on the Country Charts in 1967, followed by Something Fishy, which went to Number 17. The two songs appeared on her first full-length album, Hello, I’m Dolly.

Parton was #BornThisDay in 1946.

Below are videos of five of her earliest performances, just for you:

Medical Examiner Says Tom Petty Died of an Accidental Drug Overdose

A statement posted on tompetty.com and a news release from the L.A. County Medical Examiner said musician Tom Petty died of an accidental drug overdose of several medications.

The statement from Petty’s widow and daughter, which also was posted on Facebook, said Petty, 66, had suffered several ailments before his October 3 death. According to the statement from Dana Petty, his wife, and Adria Petty, his daughter,

Despite this painful injury he insisted on keeping his commitment to his fans and he toured for 53 dates with a fractured hip and, as he did, it worsened to a more serious injury. On the day he died he was informed his hip had graduated to a full-on break and it is our feeling that the pain was simply unbearable and was the cause for his over use of medication.

We knew before the report was shared with us that he was prescribed various pain medications for a multitude of issues including fentanyl patches and we feel confident that this was, as the coroner found, an unfortunate accident.

As a family we recognize this report may spark a further discussion on the opioid crisis and we feel that it is a healthy and necessary discussion and we hope in some way this report can save lives. Many people who overdose begin with a legitimate injury or simply do not understand the potency and deadly nature of these medications.”

Petty also suffered from coronary artery atherosclerosis and emphysema and the news release said the autopsy found these drugs in Petty’s system:

fentanyl
oxycodone
acetyl fentanyl
despropionyl fentanyl (opioids)
temazepam (sedative)
alprazolam (sedative)
citalopram (an antidepressant)

He must have been in such great pain to take so many pills at once. Acetyl fentanyl has not been approved for medical use in the U.S. at all and there are no studies on human use safety.

Petty collapsed at his home in Malibu and was taken to UCLA Medical Center, where he died October 3, not long before Tom Petty & the Hearbreakers finished a summer tour with three performances at the Hollywood Bowl.

Below is a video from one of their last performances together this summer.

#BornThisDay: Filmmaker, David Lynch

January 20, 1946David Lynch:

“I’m a regular person. I do regular things”.

In 1999, ABC shot a two-hour pilot called for a potential series Mulholland Drive. It was to be David Lynch’s weird, wonderful comeback to television, after the weird and wonderful Twin Peaks (1990-91). A car crash survivor stumbles into Hollywood with a blue key, a bag of money, and a blank memory; a cuckolding pool cleaner played by Billy Ray Cyrus, a clumsy assassin, plus some sort of garbage creature; who wouldn’t need to tune in every week for that?

Apparently not the ABC executives who objected to the glacial pace, the incomprehensible plot and everything Lynchian. Yet, Lynch fleshed out the footage he had, stretched the storylines and shot an ending. Presented as a feature film, the half-pilot, half-feature result, along with Lynch’s usual style, left the film’s meaning open to interpretation. He gave the film the tagline: “A Love Story in the City of Dreams”, but it also plays as a sticky valentine to the city of Los Angeles.

The BBC named it the Best Film of the 21st century so far, rather amazing for a rejected television pilot. On an aesthetic level it is astounding. Lynch’s frequent themes of dreams within dreams and shifting personalities, with recurring images of fires and microphones, it is both a fairytale and a nightmare. David Lynch world.

It stars Justin Theroux, Naomi Watts, Laura Harring, and Robert Forster. Plus, Ann Miller! There is even a gay angle, with a sex scene between Harring and Watts. It probably wasn’t in the pilot footage.

Lynch was born to a middle-class family in Missoula, Montana, that kept moving around the USA, including time in my hometown of Spokane.  He studied painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, where he also made his first short films.

He makes films that are so achingly beautiful and moderately disturbing that compel me to watch every time I come across one. His first was the surrealist horror film Eraserhead (1977), which became a cult classic on the midnight movie circuit. His next, produced by Mel Brooks, was a B&W biopic about a deformed man, Joseph Merrick, titled The Elephant Man (1980), starring John Hurt, Anthony Hopkins, Anne Bancroft, and John Gielgud. Brooks name was intentionally left uncredited to avoid confusion from film fans who possibly might think it was Young Frankenstein 2.

The Elephant Man was a critical and box-office hit with eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. It features make-up by Christopher Tucker. After receiving widespread criticism for failing to honor the film’s make-up, the Academy created an Oscar category for Best Makeup and Hairstyling in 1981. The film also won the BAFTA Awards for Best Film, Best Actor and Best Production Design and the César Award for Best Foreign Film.

With new mainstream success, he made two films for De Laurentiis Entertainment: the science-fiction dud Dune (1984), and the brilliant noir Blue Velvet (1986), which stirred quite the controversy. Audiences and critics were divided, but I loved it. I wasn’t alone. Lynch received his second Academy Award nomination for Best Director. Now, entire courses in film school are taught its thematic symbolism, and it is widely regarded as one of the greatest films of the 1980s. Sight & Sound, Time Magazine, Entertainment Weekly and BBC Magazine have ranked it as one of Greatest American Films of all time. In 2008, Blue Velvet was chosen by the American Film Institute as one of the Top Ten American Mystery Films.

When he was partnered with Hill Street Blues writer Mark Frost to ground his dreamy landscaped into something ABC could cut commercials around, the network execs suggested something like Peyton Place. Instead, the duo delivered Dickensian delirium for two seasons. A series about the murder of homecoming queen Laura Palmer and her small Pacific Northwest logging town’s secrets, demons and alternate dimensions. It was a primetime show about the monsters lurking just beneath the surface of American society. And it was also a show that was willing to be maddeningly embrace of art-house aesthetics, and upend the Andy Griffith Show’s dream of small town life into an acid trip. Twin Peaks changed the idea of what people would watch on television. It influenced television program with series such as The X-Files, Lost and even Mad Men to approximately 98 percent of small-town murder mysteries. And Lynch has spent those intervening decades being begged by Twin Peaks fans, cast and crew, to return.

He obliged with Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992), then moved on to the road movie Wild At Heart (1990) and a sweet, strange G-rated film The Straight Story (1999). Lynch moved back to his “dream logic” non-linear narrative structures with the thriller Lost Highway (1997), Mulholland Drive and the mystery film Inland Empire (2006). But fans kept clamoring for more Twin Peaks, and Lynch and Frost reunited for the Showtime limited series Twin Peaks: The Return (2017), with Lynch co-writing and directing every episode. Showtime reports that the series led to a record number of subscriptions.

David Bowie was to play FBI Agent Phillip Jeffries, his character from Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. But, Bowie died and became unavailable. In early 2017 cast members Miguel Ferrer and Warren Frost left for another diminsion, but both appear in the new series. Harry Dean Stanton, who reprised his role from the original series also, left this world last September, just days after the last episode of the series aired.

Besides being a uniquely challenging filmmaker, Lynch is also a uniquely challenging painter, musician, actor, and photographer.

Lynch stated:

“I am not a political person. I thought of myself as a libertarian. I believed in next to zero government. And I still would lean toward no government and not so many rules, except for traffic lights and things like this. I really believe in traffic regulations. I don’t know if there even is a Libertarian party. They wouldn’t have a prayer of getting anywhere. So, I’m a Democrat now. And I’ve always been a Democrat, really. But I don’t like the Democrats a lot, either, because I’m a smoker, and I think a lot of the Democrats have come up with these rules for non-smoking.”

Lynch has received four Academy Award nominations, has twice won the César Award for Best Foreign Film, as well as the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and a Golden Lion Award at the Venice Film Festival. He was awarded the Legion of Honor, France’s top civilian honor.

Lynch loves coffee and even has his own line of special organic blends available for purchase on his website. The coffee, David Lynch Signature Cup, is advertised in recent DVD releases of his work. The tag-line for the brand is: “It’s all in the beans… and I’m just full of beans.

40 years after the premiere of the deliciously disturbing Eraserhead, and 25 years after Laura Palmer said good-bye to Special Agent Dale Cooper, the most daring auteur in Hollywood continues to go to places that seem off-limits for film and television.

Will there be another season of Twin Peaks? Lynch has said “there’s nothing to talk about”, but that he’s learned not to rule anything out and cryptically said there is “always room to dream”.
