Must Buy OTD: The Pansy Beat Book, Commemorating the Influential Downtown Art/Drag Magazine of the Late ’80s and Early ’90s

$

Well, Pansy Beat! My GOODNESS! Do you REMEMBER? It was only THE go-to downtown drag ‘zine of its time (that time being the incredibly creative years of 1989 and 1990). Everybody who was anybody was featured in its pages. Smart, chic, and infinitely quotable, the memorable magazine certainly made its impact on the NYC club scene (and beyond!). I think I had every photo on my refrigerator or bulletin board at one time or another.

Now it’s back, in lovely book form.

Pansy Beat was a short-lived fanzine published by Michael Economy in New York from 1989–1990, totaling five quarterly issues. Each issue’s 50-some black-and-white pages documented the exuberant downtown gay and drag club scene of that era and included one free condom. The zine offered a glimpse into an exhilarating alternative universe during the darkest years of the AIDS crisis.

Interviews profiled downtown personalities on the verge of global stardom, many still working to this day. Artists such as Lady Bunny, Billy Erb, Connie Fleming, Kenny Kenny, Lady Miss Kier and Larry Tee first shared their memorable selves in print on the pages of Pansy Beat. The zine also featured interviews with Edwige Belmore, Leigh Bowery and Quentin Crisp.

This book celebrates Pansy Beat’s brief but influential life including a reprinting of all five issues in their original format, previously unseen photographs by staff photographer Michael Fazakerley, new full-color artwork by some of the original contributors, plus new essays and interviews. Design by Jan Wandrag.

Only $35 for an amazing piece of New York drag history! Get your copy here!

There’s also a fabulous companion river box set with posters and photos that you can read about here.

Justin Timberlake Is an Earthy, Blanket-Wearing “Man of the Woods” in the Teaser-Trailer to His Upcoming Album

It’s back to the old west for Justin Timberlake in his new album “Man of the Woods” – dropping February 2. In the special sneak-peek teaser trailer released today, we see manly man Justin in some Lumineers-meets-Revenant leather and flannel and blanket-as-coats as wife Jessica coos about her hubby’s new sound in a VO, saying:

“It feels like mountains, trees, campfires. Like Wild West… but now.”

Hmmm.

Jezebel says it all looks like a Jeep Cherokee commercial, which is completely spot-on, and points out it also seems like “wilderness survival as a cool marketing aesthetic.” HA!

But on the plus side: We hear a number of songs that have that trademark Justinian feeling of super-hits – and I did find myself humming along – so between this and his upcoming Super Bowl appearance next month, brace yourself for another Timberlake pop tsunami coming our way in 2018.

Watch the trailer below. Just be prepared for lots of “Christ-on-the-cross” poses and sexy “suddenly looking up” shots.

CAUGHT: Ex-Cons Charged with Brutal Throat Slashing of Gay Couple and Two Children in Upstate New York

Two suspects have been arrested in a quadruple homicide in upstate New York that left a lesbian couple and their two children dead. And it turns out, one of them might have known one of the victims.

This past weekend, Justin Mann, 24, and James White, 38, were arraigned in Troy City Court after being arrested Friday night. Both men face four counts each of second-degree and one count each of first-degree murder (although each have entered ‘not guilty’ pleas). Their preliminary hearings will be held on Thursday.

As you recall, last week the bodies of 36-year-old Shanta Myers, her 22-year-old girlfriend Brandi Mells, their 5-year-old daughter Shanise Myers and 11-year-old son Jeremiah Myers were all discovered with their throats slashed.

Troy Police Chief James Tedesco told the Albany Times Union “After being in this business for almost 42 years, I can’t describe the savagery of this. I don’t have the words.”

Well, there’s some new information coming to light right now:

Police Chief Tedesco revealed at a press conference on Saturday morning that the crime appeared to have been committed around 9pm on December 21 – meaning the victims had been dead for nearly five days.

Additionally, it was revealed that one of the defendants was acquainted with one of the victims but further information could not be given ‘because the investigation is ongoing’.

According to The Daily Beast, Mells was friends with Mann, who has now been charged with killing her and her girlfriend’s family.

‘I never seen him before a day in my life, neither of them,’ Shanta Myers’s nephew, Khalif Coleman, told The Daily Beast. ‘But some of my family members recognize him as Brandi’s friend. He supposedly always hung out with her.’

Department of Corrections records show Mann was released on parole in June after being convicted of first-degree robbery in 2014. Chief Tedesco revealed that both men had criminal records but declined to comment on their previous charges.

Isiah Smith, 15, who was not home at the time and is the family’s sole survivor, spoke about the moment he found out, saying he

‘Couldn’t believe it. Heartbroken. I fell down to the ground right in the bathroom and cried thinking who would’ve done this?’ reported CBS6.

Isaiah fondly remembered his younger brother saying he followed him around everywhere. ‘It got to the point where I’d be in the bathroom and he’d be on the other side talking to me like ‘bro what are you about to do after this?’ and I’d be like ‘I don’t know!” he joked.

Apparently Jeremiah dreamed of playing for the Boston Celtics in the NBA one day and had also been a member of the Troy Boys & Girls Club for six years.

He was the quintessential ‘Club Kid’ who impacted the lives of so many staff, children and teens, parents and volunteers,’ the club said in a statement.

‘It will be deeply felt by all his friends at the club and throughout our community.’

His younger sister, Shanise, had a passion for cooking and apparently was wise beyond her years. ‘That girl was like a grown woman in a little body,’ her Uncle Khalif Coleman said. ‘You ain’t telling that girl what to do, she will be in your face.’

Her Aunt Symes said she was going to have the youngster cook spaghetti as part of their Christmas meal. She told Symes ‘Auntie I know how to make spaghetti.’

Omg, that’s so sad.

A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to provide for Isiah (it’s already gotten $48,000).

SeeBass – a rightwing Twitter user who describes himself “gay conservative PROUD TRUMP SUPPORTER” (*groan*) – has been busted for using a number of photos of model/actor/designer/perfume designer/former go-go god Matthew Camp – including one as his avatar.

Camp, of course, is BEYOND famous for his yummy Instagram account, with over 492k devoted followers, so it’s hard to see how the TrumpBot thought he could get away with it.

Camp called out SeeBass via Twitter, saying “don’t use my picture to support Trump,… fake account”

Ha!

Unfortunately, it seems Twitter (often so lax in policing their site) won’t remove the Trump troll or stop him from using Camp’s pic.

(FULL DISCLOSURE: This post is basically just an excuse to run a bunch of Instagram pics of Matthew. My GOD he’s magnificent! Enjoy)

#BornThisDay: Film Director, Dorothy Arzner

Arzner with DP, Lucien Ballard, Film Quarterly via YouTube

January 3, 1897– Dorothy Arzner:

“Each day when I went to work at a studio, I took my pride and made a nice little ball of it and threw it right out the window.”

Portland’s own Todd Haynes (who was yesterday’s #BornThisDay figure) has been promising a Dorothy Arzner biopic since 2003. Her story has yet to make it to the screen, but maybe Julianne Moore could be Haynes’ number one choice for the role. Who else do you think might embody the men’s suit wearing, openly gay Arzner? I’ll even throw in Cate Blanchett to play Katharine Hepburn for a second time. Does that make it more enticing?  After all, Arzner was the one that gave Hepburn her first starring role, playing a famous female flyer in Christopher Strong (1933).

Arzner nurtured the careers of several strong female film stars. She has also served as an inspiration for other women directors, even in our own era. Someday, when having a woman direct a major Hollywood film isn’t worth mentioning, film fans will be shocked to learn that there was a time when Arzner and Ida Lupino were the only gals working behind the camera.

Arzner started at Paramount Pictures as a typist, before making her way up the ladder, first as a screenwriter and then editor. She eventually demanded a chance to direct, threatening to move to another studio. She showed real pluck and panache with her first film Fashions For Women (1927), a box-office hit. She was then offered to direct Paramount’s very first sound film, The Wild Party (1929).

The Wild Party starred “It Girl” Clara Bow in her first speaking role, along with Frederic March in his film debut. It proved popular with the critics and fans. For its time, it was quite controversial, daringly featuring scantily clad co-eds and chorus girls. For The Wild Party, she tied a microphone to a fishing pole to put nervous star Bow at ease and get better audio, basically inventing the first boom microphone.

Paramount thought Arzner was right for directing melodramas with female leads like Sarah And Son (1930), starring Ruth Chatterton who was nominated for an Academy Award, and giving Rosalind Russell her first great role in Craig’s Wife (1936). As a technician, she was anything but fussy. She eschewed meandering shots or anything that would distract from her clarity of vision or her devotion to detail. She stated:

“Maintain conscious control of your medium – nothing random.”

One of the reoccurring themes in Arzner’s films is the emotional toll of an unhappy marriage. Her work often features a man who behaves like he owns a woman, or a man competing with a woman.

Arzner’s films also frequently show nuanced, complex, sympathetic female friendships with hints of homoeroticism. Just last month on TCM, I caught Arzner’s Dance, Girl, Dance (1940) with Lucille Ball in her first starring role, along with Maureen O’Hara. They play roommates Bubbles and Judy, who scrap over men and money, tossing off wisecracks and dancing like a lesbian version of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. It also has a nutty turn by famed acting coach Maria Ouspenskaya as an especially butch dance instructor. I really enjoyed this one.

Arzner had a major love affair with Marion Morgan, the choreographer on Dance, Girl, Dance. She also spent some very special time with Joan Crawford, before, during, and after they worked together on The Bride Wore Red (1937) and The Last Of Mrs. Cheyney (1937). Their bond was so strong that Crawford was even able to lure Arzner out of retirement to shoot more than 50 commercials for Pepsi when Crawford was the spokesperson and on the Board Of Directors for the company.

In 1943, Arzner made her final film, First Comes Courage, a war film overflowing with lesbian subtext. Noted for being a hard worker, Arzner was still able to enjoy a romantic fling with the star of the film, Merle Oberon.

Systemic sexism and overt homophobia had been on the upswing with the start of The Hays Code in 1934. The Hays Code was the set of industry moral guidelines that was applied to most films released by major studios from 1930 to 1968. Hollywood became more conservative and there was a return to traditional gender roles after the end of WW II. I am not certain if these were reasons why a woman whose films were as good as any man’s, who’s films came in on time and under-budget and who made money for the studios, stopped making movies. Maybe because she was often the only woman director working in Hollywood, her first goal was to prove that she was competent because competence was far more important than brilliance or originality in making sure she had a career. Her inability to conform to an increasingly conservative moral climate in Hollywood had to have been a major stumbling block.

Arzner was a complicated and unique woman. She possessed a biting sense of humor and a sophisticated personal style, noted for her short-cropped hair and the wearing of pants.

Between 1927 and 1943, Arzner directed 17 feature films. Almost all have her trademark unconventional heroines, strong and self-sufficient, who must reconcile marriage and career. Like the masterful gay director, James Whale, her films resonate with gay subtext.

She mentored a young film director named Francis Ford Coppola. I hear things turned out well for him.

After leaving the studio system, Arzner made Army training films and taught at UCLA, plus she shot those Pepsi commercials. In 1936, she became the very first woman to join The Directors Guild Of America. The Guild finally got around to honoring her contribution in 1975 with their Legend Award, four years before her passing. She left this world with no Oscars, honorary or otherwise, and aside from that DGA reward, after a prolific career that spanned from 1922 to 1943, she only has a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame.

There is some promise and progress for women directors. Currently there are 245 films by women streaming on Netflix.  In 2016, there were 49 films directed by females according the DGA, not all of them found distribution. Only one film of the top 25, Kung Fu Panda 3, was directed by a woman, Jennifer Yuh Nelson, and she gets to share the credit with a dude, Alessandro Carloni.

In 2017 and 2018, there are only 24 films directed by women, despite the attention paid to Hollywood’s gender inequality issues. Granted, Warner Bros. had Patty Jenkins’ blockbuster Wonder Woman, but the studio has nothing on the docket for 2018 that is to be directed by a woman. In 2017, only two of the Top 50 money makers were directed by women, Wonder Woman and Trish Sie’s Pitch Perfect 3.

Disney had zero films directed by women in 2017, although their 2018 lineup includes Ava DuVernay’s A Wrinkle In Time, the first $100 million live-action feature to be directed by a female director of color.

They might not have been huge at the box-office, but some of the year’s best reviewed films were directed by females: The Beguiled directed by Sofia Coppola, Dee Rees’ Mudbound, Angelia Jolie’s First They Killed My Father, Faces Places directed by 89-year-old Agnes Varda, and one of the most honored films of the year Lady Bird from Greta Gerwig.  I would also mention Battle Of The Sexes directed by Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton, and the fascinating Wonder Woman backstory Professor Marston & the Wonder Women directed by Angela Robinson.

Women directed just 4% of the top money-making films in the 21st century. Of the 700 top-grossing films in history, women make up 13% of the directors. In 89 years of the Academy Awards, only four female directors have even been nominated for Oscars: Lina Wertmüller for Seven Beauties (1976), Jane Campion for The Piano (1993), Sofia Coppola for Lost In Translation (2003), and Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker (2009). Only Bigelow has taken home the statue, making the ratio of female to male winners 1 to 89.

Lesbians making feature films is a very small list indeed. There is Phyllida Lloyd, Dee Rees, and Jodie Foster, and I particularly admire Kimberly Peirce who directed Boys Don’t Cry (1999), and Lisa Cholodenko who directed the terrific Oscar nominated The Kids Are All Right (2010). My gaydar goes off for Ava DuVernay, director of the landmark, Selma (2014) and 13 (2015)  but she keeps her private life private, although I know she vacations with Oprah and Gayle.

As Katharine Hepburn put it to Arzner in a telegram when she was at last honored by the DGA in 1975:

‘Isn’t it wonderful that you’ve had such a great career, when you had no right to have a career at all?”

#JesusChrist!: 0% of America’s 100 Largest Churches Affirm LGBTQ People

$

The organization Church Clarity monitors the way that LGBTQ issues are taught in churches across the U.S. and an analysis of the 100 largest ones finds that 0% affirm LGBTQ policies.

Of those 100 churches, 35 have clear policies that reject LGBT people and 54 have unclear policies on LGBT issues. 11 omit all mention of the issue from publicly-accessible records.

Southern Baptist megachurches were the most likely to actively preach rejection of LGBT people, with 62% found to do so. 47% of Independent Christian Churches also rejected LGBT people.

Religion News Service columnist Jonathan Merritt said:

While progressive Christians often claim that same-sex issues have largely been settled, America’s mega-churches have apparently not received the memo. None of them have policies affirming same-sex people and relationships.

This staggering statistic will doubtlessly provide firepower to conservative Christians who claim that LGBTQ+ affirmation is a slippery slope to liberalism and a congregation killer.”

And duh, the largest churches were guess what? – Overwhelmingly white and male. 93% of the megachurches were led by a white pastor and 99% are led by a man.

Church Clarity’s co-founder Tim Schraeder said:

Part of the reason we chose to release this now is because the New Year is a time when people decide to reengage with religion by attending church. As people of faith commit to new resolutions, we wanted to set them up for success by helping them make the most informed decision.

We hope that increased clarity will inspire necessary questions and waves of change within the church.

As we close out 2017, we’ll continue to verify church submissions to our database and score churches’ actively enforced policies that impact LGBTQ individuals.”

Pastor John MacArthur of the 3500 seat Grace Community Church in L.A. recently claimed that there is no such thing as gay people. MacArthur insisted,

No one is gay. If you mean by that, that that’s some hardwiring, no one is gay. People commit adultery, they commit sins of homosexuality, they lie, they steal, they cheat… They are not gay any more than an adulterer is hardwired to be forced by his own nature to commit adultery. Those are all behavioral sins that are condemned in scripture.

God didn’t hardwire anybody in such a way that they are not responsible for certain behaviors…. we do no service to people who are caught in the vicious sins of homosexuality by letting them define themselves by that sin.“

MacArthur responded to a letter from a parent whose son had just come out by saying,

If they profess to be a Christian, you have to alienate them. You have to separate them. You can’t condone that. It’s inconsistent with Christ. So you isolate them, you don’t have a meal with them, you separate yourself from them. You turn them over to Satan as it were as scripture says.

And Jesus barfed.

#WTF?!: London Newspaper Calls Female Fire Commissioner “He” In an Article About Sexism

The Evening Standard ran an article about the London Fire Brigade fighting sexism campaign referring to female commissioner Dany Cotton, as “he”.

The article referenced the LFB’s “Firefighting Sexism” campaign, and included comments Cotton had made before to the Standard, but referred to her as “he”. The fire brigade said that the use of the incorrect pronoun highlighted the importance of the campaign, with too many people automatically assuming that the commander would be a man.

London Fire Brigade Deputy Assistant Commissioner Jane Philpott told BuzzFeed News:

“It’s a bit of ‘facepalm’ moment but it outlines how important our #FirefightingSexism campaign is.

Too many people assume that firefighting is a job for a man and that our commissioner is also a man! We have used the term ‘firefighters’ for more than 30 years.”

Several individual firefighters also criticised the newspaper on Twitter, and demanded an apology for the mistake.

Yes, it is a face palm moment compounded by the fact that her name was Dany. (If a man was named Frances, would he get called “she”…?) Hey, whatever happened to that thing called “fact-checking”.

#QueerQuote: “One Could Be Forgiven For Illiteracy, but Never For Lack Of Good Taste.” – William Haines

With Anita Paige, 1927, MGM via YouTube

As Billy Haines, he was one of MGM’s biggest stars of the 1920s, playing cocky yet sympathetic wise guys in popular films like Brown Of Harvard (1926). In the early 1930s, Haines was the Number One male box-office star, although few fans remember him for his film work now. Yet, Haines was a talented, handsome, assured, romantic leading man. Off-screen, he was gay, gay-gay, way gay, openly gay.

Haines’ story remains particularly intriguing because he took on Louis B. Mayer and the MGM brass by refusing to act the part of a straight guy for the studios’ publicity department. He chose to be open about his life and his partner with a certain disregard for fame and fortune.

For the film-going public, Cary Grant and Randolph Scott played it coy with their relationship. When his openness spelled ruin for his acting career, Haines simply switched careers and became even more rich and famous as the interior designer of choice for Hollywood stars. Haines managed to remain in the spotlight without ever having to stand before the cameras again.

In those crazy 1920s and early 1930s, there was a rich gay subculture in Hollywood. This was before the Hays Production Code and before studio executives’ intimidation led to the establishment of the Hollywood closet, an institution that runs strong to this day. With the gossip about his love life threatening to ruin Haines’ leading man image, Mayer, MGM’s powerful studio chief, gave him an ultimatum: lie about his gayness and get married, or lose his contract. Haines refused. He never worked in films again.

via YouTube

Haines dropped the Billy, renamed himself William Haines, and as easily as he became a top film star, he became the town’s top interior designer. His first client was his pal Joan Crawford, but others soon followed: Claudette Colbert, Jack Benny, George Burns and Gracie Allen, Carole Lombard, William Powell, Lionel Barrymore, Marion Davies, Douglas Fairbanks, studio head Jack Warner, and gay director George Cukor. His social standing was decidedly A-list. He worked for and socialized with Frank Sinatra. Ronnie and Nancy Reagan were his frequent guests at his lavish home.

Crawford in a Haines designed room, Architectural Digest via YouTube

Haines had never set out to be a movie star or an interior designer. He was a smart, appealing young man with a talent for grabbing each opportunity that presented itself. He lived by his wits, always seeming to make all the right moves. He managed to reach the very apex of success in two difficult careers for which he had no training.

His career lasted until Haines left this world in 1973. William Haines Designs remains in business to this day, with main offices in West Hollywood and with showrooms in NYC, Denver and Dallas. His original furniture designs are still produced for the top end design trade.

I admire that beginning in 1926, Haines lived openly as a couple with Jimmy Shields, a film extra. Haines refused to give up Shields for the sake of his film career and their relationship lasted until Haines’ passing. That was 50 years, together through it all. Crawford called them: ”The happiest married couple in Hollywood”.

#FireAndFury: Steve Bannon Calls Trump Tower Meeting with Russians “Treasonous”

The former White House chief strategist (and evil creep) said something truthful for once. Steve Bannon called the 2016 Trump Tower meeting between Trump campaign officials and a Russian lawyer offering damaging information about Hillary Clinton “treasonous,” according to a new book obtained by The Guardian.

Michael Wolff‘s new book, Fire and Fury (to be released Jan. 9) is based on hundreds of interviews, including ones with Trump and his inner circle and according to the Guardian, Bannon told Wolff that special counsel Robert Mueller‘s investigation into the Trump campaign’s potential ties to Russia is centered on money laundering.

Referencing the June 2016 Trump Tower meeting between Donald Trump Jr., then-campaign chairman Paul Manafort, Jared Kushner, and Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya, Bannon reportedly told Wolff:

They’re going to crack Don Junior like an egg on national TV. The three senior guys in the campaign thought it was a good idea to meet with a foreign government inside Trump Tower in the conference room on the 25th floor — with no lawyers. They didn’t have any lawyers. Even if you thought that this was not treasonous, or unpatriotic, or bad shit, and I happen to think it’s all of that, you should have called the FBI immediately.

The White House has so far declined to comment about Bannon’s remarks.

Knife in the back, Donny? No, in your front. There’s more to come…

UPDATE: Trump blast back in a new statement:

“Steve Bannon has nothing to do with me or my Presidency. When he was fired, he not only lost his job, he lost his mind. Steve was a staffer who worked for me after I had already won the nomination by defeating 17 candidates, often described as the most talented field ever assembled in the Republican party.”

RuPaul’s Drag Race season 6 fan favorite Courtney Act will enter the UK Celebrity Big Brother house Friday night, competing alongside Boyzone star Shane Lynch, soccer legend John Barnes, and other very-famous-in-Britain-but-I-might-need-to-do-some-Googling stars like India Willoughby, Rachel Johnson, Ann Widdecombe, Amanda Barrie, Malika Haqq, Jess Impiazzi, Ashley James and Maggie Oliver. And even though I’m not really sure how stiff the competition is, I know in my heart of hearts that Courtney will DOMINATE the house and undoubtably emerge VICTORIOUS!

Says a source for The Sun:

“Courtney has seen everything as a drag queen so nothing will faze her in the house.

“She’s a pro who won’t be intimidated by any of the big personalities in there and she won’t back down from a row.

Courtney, of course, is no stranger to reality television, having gotten her start on Australian Idol back in 2003 and of course RuPaul’s Drag Race where she ended in the top three. I still wonder if she asked Drag Race/Big Brother alumna Michelle Visage for pointers?

#FutureFright: So Hacked Sex Robots Could Go On Murderous Rampages…

$
0
0

I know we’re all extremely worried about weaponized robots, Artificial Intelligence, and the coming technological singularity, but now a new threat looms on the (event) horizon. Cyber security experts are warning that soon sex robots could be hijacked by hackers and used to cause harm or even kill people.

“Hackers can hack into a robot or a robotic device and have full control of the connections, arms, legs and other attached tools like in some cases knives or welding devices,” Nicholas Patterson, a cybersecurity lecturer at Deakin University in Melbourne, Australia, told the Star.

It all began, funnily enough, with he world’s first “teledildonic butt plug” that could conceivably be “controlled from anywhere.” As a joke, someone hacked into its non-protected Bluetooth security protocol and started vibrating it.

That lead to the realization that most sex toys that manufacturers have launched in recent years connect to smartphones and computers via WiFi and Bluetooth in order to allow users to control them remotely and download software updates.

However, security experts warn that these companies very often treat cybersecurity as an afterthought.

Ergo, this terrifying statement:

“Often these sex robots can be upwards of 200 pounds and very strong. Once a robot is hacked, the hacker has full control and can issue instructions to the robot. The last thing you want is for a hacker to have control over one of these robots. Once hacked they could absolutely be used to perform physical actions for an advantageous scenario or to cause damage.”

Last year, experts wrote a commentary for the scientific journal Nature that outlined a scenario in which rogue artificial intelligence hijacked a brain-computer interface. In such a situation, a person’s thoughts, decisions and emotions could be taken over by AI and manipulated against the person’s will.

A hypothetical example of how such a scenario might play out, according to the authors of the piece, would be if a paralyzed man using a brain-computer interface took a dislike to someone. That could be misinterpreted as a command to harm that person even if no direct order is given.

Oh dear.

This cannot end well.

Newsweek ended their frankly terrifying article on the subject with this, which I didn’t fully understand but feel I ought to include:

“Technological developments mean that we are on a path to a world in which it will be possible to decode people’s mental processes and directly manipulate the brain mechanisms underlying their intentions, emotions and decisions; where individuals can communicate with others simply by thinking; and where powerful computational systems linked directly to people’s brains facilitate their interactions with the world such that their mental and physical abilities are greatly enhanced,” the researchers wrote.

“The possible clinical and societal benefits of neurotechnologies are vast. To reap them, we must guide their development in a way that respects, protects and enables what is best in humanity.”

“He gets in your head like a virus.”

OMG.

The trailer for the much-anticipated horror flick based on the Creepy Pasta blog postings which led to an artificially manufactured urban legend which led to a real life murder IS FINALLY HERE. The Slender Man has been given a back story, I think, although I can’t really tell from this teaser which truthfully looks more like a Trent Reznor video than a movie. But who am I to judge. The internet seems to be in a collective swoon over it.

Says one YouTube commenter of the trailer:

Some people are complaining about Slender Man not appearing very much in this. GOOD. I hope it stays that way, even in the movie. Go the less-is-more route. Show him as little as possible. That way, when he does appear, it will have the impact it should. Subtlety is key here. The horror of Slender Man comes from the other-worldly, surreal nature. It’s not in your face jumpscares, it’s looking at a seemingly normal picture and noticing him. Watching a scene from a video again and realizing he was in the background the entire time. That’s the scary part. If they can nail that, they’ve got this.

Indeed.

I do love the eyeball stabbing scene.

RDR Season 5 Star Penny Tration on the Ripped Dollar Bill That Almost Broke Her Spirit

One of my favorite queens of ALL TIME, RDR season 5 queen Penny Tration, had a heartbreaking story to tell on Facebook today that involves an unexpected diss, a ripped dollar bill, and the power of forgiveness.

She writes:

A Long Story and a Little Background :

I’ve had many unfortunate interactions with too many people in the course of doing my job. This incident broke thru all the defenses I had developed that allowed me to keep doing my job. Lots of people asked why I needed to step away from the spotlight for a minute. I stepped away to gain perspective and to lick a few wounds that I had allowed to fester.

Wounds Healed; Perspective Gained (wink)
********************
Here’s the Long story :

Her hair was long, to the middle of her back, dark brown and well conditioned. Her skin was clear and her eyes were bright. I even remember her teeth being exceptionally white and perfectly straight. She wasn’t exceptionally beautiful but certainly not unattractive.

She found herself seated in the front row of our show with a small group

I did my normal opening monologue and then started the show with Shirley Bassey’s “get this party started”

At about the mid-point of my performance, I moved toward her to accept the outstretched dollar. She leaned in for what I thought was a hug before “whispering” in my ear, ” I hope you die for what you do” … then held the dollar up and ripped it in half

Security deftly and quietly took care of the rest after I verbally made a bit of a fool of myself – and we continued to do our jobs and had a great Saturday Night Show
I’ve held onto that dollar. It sat there, tucked in the frame of the mirror I get ready in every night.

Last night, I took a picture of that dollar and then threw it away.

I may one day, “…die for what I do” but that dollar and that girl will no longer have any power to make me feel any less than I am

I release you to the universe with forgiveness and peace. I alone own my happiness…

I’m so sorry she had to experience that, and I’m so sorry she held on to that woman’s toxic hate for so long. Good for her for putting it behind her. WE LOVE YOU, PENNY!

January 4, 1960Michael Stipe:

“As a 14 or 15-year-old, All The Young Dudes resonated with me because of my sexuality. There was a hot guy in glasses and I wore glasses.”

A few days ago, I had a friend take issue with my free use of the term “Queer”. I explained to her (a straight person) that I found the word to be inclusive of all sorts of gayness and that it was, for me, like the N word, mine to use freely, offensive for most other people to use, and after decades of facing the term ”Queer” as a jeer, an insult, a slight, it is fun to own the word and I wear it as a badge of honor. Also, I like Qs. I collect them; I even have a Q as a tattoo.

Two and a half decades ago Michael Stipe came out of the closet as Queer, not Gay. I liked that. I like Stripe. I like that band that he used to be in. I liked them a lot apparently, I have every album they put out, including B-sides and rarities.

Stipe:

“In 1994, most people had a largely binary perception of sexuality, the message was complicated for them. I am thrilled to see how much this has changed in those 20 years. The 21st century has provided all of us, recent generations particularly, with a clearer idea of the breadth of fluidity with which sexuality and identity presents itself in each individual. Gender identification, and the panoply of sexuality and identity are now topics that are more easily and more widely discussed, debated and talked about openly. It’s thrilling to see progressive change shift perceptions so quickly.”

“I think queerness is a state of mind brought about by an understanding: it is understanding difference, accepting your own truth, desire and identity, and lovely, lovely choice.”

In the 1990s, I had a lot of voice-over work and much of it was recorded at Seattle’s Bad Animals Studios, partly owned by Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart, and where bands and artists like R.E.M., Soundgarden, Johnny Cash, Nirvana, and Danny Elfman could be seen roaming the halls.

In 1992, I ran into (literally) Stipe there. I would describe him as enigmatic and shy, to say the least.

When the strange, beautiful, semi-acoustic R.E.M. album Automatic For The People appeared that year, the reticent singer had fully grabbed my attention. R.E.M. began work on Automatic For The People soon after all four members had turned 30-years-old. It reflects the loss of youth but is filled with emotional intensity.

Appearing a year after Nirvana’s Nevermind (with the Seattle Grunge movement’s anthem, Smells Like Teen Spirit), R.E.M.’s understated album seemed at odds with the times.

Stipe:

”It sounded like the work of people who have just come through their 20s, past the famous age in Rock ‘N’ Roll when people of 27 drop dead. There are a lot of songs about darkness and sadness and death and transition. These are songs of transition.”

But, for Stipe to come out in 1992, would have just been too difficult. Stipe:

”I had lived with fear of HIV for almost 10 years. The first New York cases were being reported in 1983 and in the neighborhoods where I spent most of my time. I had to cope with not knowing if I was positive until I was able to get tested anonymously, only to find out I was healthy. People thought I was sick but I wasn’t.”

Stipe’s skinny body and gaunt face prompted a lot of speculation. His R.E.M. bandmates Mike Mills, Peter Buck and Bill Berry were worried. Stipe:

”When I got my status, they were certainly aware of it but I don’t think they knew how scared I was. I lost, we lost, a lot of people. I wore a hat that said ‘White House Stop AIDS’. I’ve always been skinny, except in 1985 when I looked like Marlon Brando, the last time I shaved my head. I was really sick then. Eating potatoes. I think AIDS hysteria would obviously and naturally extend to people who are media figures and anybody of indecipherable or unpronounced sexuality. Anybody who looks gaunt, for whatever reason. Anybody who is associated, for whatever reason, whether it’s a hat, or the way I carry myself, as being queer-friendly.”

In January 1980, Stipe met Buck at the Athens, Georgia record store where Buck worked. The pair discovered that they shared similar tastes in music, particularly artists like Patti Smith, Television, and The Velvet Underground. Stipe:

“It turns out that I was buying all the records that Buck was saving for himself.”

Stipe and Buck met fellow University of Georgia students Mills and Berry, who had played music together since high school and lived together in Athens. The four guys agreed to collaborate on several songs. Stipe later claimed that “there was never any grand plan behind any of it”. The unnamed band spent a few months rehearsing and played its first show in April 1980, at a friend’s birthday party. The band decided on R.E.M., which is an acronym for rapid eye movement, the dream stage of sleep, which Stipe had selected at random from a dictionary.

Starting with Murmur in 1983, the band released five albums before its two most commercially successful albums, Out Of Time (1991) and Automatic For The People (1992), which veered from the band’s original punk sound and catapulted them to international fame. Monster (1994) was a return to a more rock-oriented sound, but still continued their run of bestselling and critically acclaimed albums.

The success of multiplatinum Out Of Time and its monster hit singles and the videos of Losing My Religion and Shiny Happy People made Stipe Bono level famous.

In 1996, R.E.M. signed with Warner Bros. for $80 million, at the time, the most expensive recording contract in history. Their first release on the liable, New Adventures In Hi-Fi (1996) brought strong reviews, yet fared worse commercially than the earlier albums. The following year, Berry left the band, while Stipe, Buck, and Mills continued the group as a trio.

Through changes in musical style, the band continued its career into the next decade with mixed critical and commercial success, despite having sold more than 85 million records worldwide and becoming one of the world’s best-selling music artists of all time.

In 2007, the band was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, in their first year of eligibility. R.E.M. formally broke up in September 2011.

I love all of their music, but one song that resonates through the years is Everybody Hurts, frequently covered, but never better than R.E.M.’s original version with Stipe’s aching vocals.

On the first five albums, Stipe’s songs were opaque and mystical, but Everybody Hurts was raw and unadorned.

”One of the things that I didn’t want to do was write another love song. There were enough of those in the world and I wasn’t sure that I could rise to the occasion and do a better one. That song grew wings. It’s a very simple thing but simple is sometimes hardest to attain. We managed to write a song that struck a chord with people and has that unique position of being exactly the right song for the moment.”

I don’t hear much about Stipe these days. In 2014, he inducted Nirvana into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. This past autumn, Stipe teamed with Fischerspooner on Have Fun Tonight for their album Sir. Stipe generously claims: ”I’m not great without those R.E..M guys as a performer.”

Stipe did provide a bit of controversy after the 2016 election, when he emphasized compassion for Trump supporters, stating:

”Rather than people voting for a racist, xenophobic agenda, an intolerant agenda, I think they were just trying to smash the machine…”

”I tried unsuccessfully to inject a bit of nuance into a few things, and I got shut down really fast. Which is gonna happen. I understand that. I knew that I was putting myself in a firing line. But that’s okay, I can take it. It’s not a time for nuance, but it’s exactly what we need. These are real people with real problems and real lives. The people who are falling between the cracks are who I’m concerned with. It’s a very fucked up time to be. That said, I’m an optimist. I think maybe things need to get really bad for people to recognize what needs to be done. I’m not sure I know what needs to be done. But, we need to start listening to each other. That’s a very hippie thing to say, but… we don’t all need to have opinions on everything. We just need to listen a little more.”

Stipe owns the Athens, Georgia building that houses his vegetarian restaurant. When not in Georgia, he shares a TriBeCa loft, recently featured in The NY Times, with his hot boyfriend, photographer Thomas Dozol.

By the way, the use of the word ”Queer” is debated among gay people to this day.

#QueerQuote: “You Live But Once; You Might As Well Be Amusing.” – Coco Chanel

In the summer of 1920, Coco Chanel (1883-1971) opened a shop in the resort town Biarritz where she met a Russian émigré, Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich. Their romance was short but important. Pavlovich introduced Chanel to a Russian perfumer, Ernest Beaux, who had worked for Russia’s Imperial Court.

The meeting was eventful for both of them. After a year of hard work and many experiments, Beaux placed ten samples in front of Chanel, dividing them into two groups. The first half Beaux numbered from one through five, the second from 20 through 24. Chanel chose the sample No. 5 and when Beaux asked her why, Chanel replied:

”I always launch my collection on the fifth day of the fifth month, so the number 5 seems to bring me luck, therefore, I will name it: No. 5.”

The list of clients who wore Chanel No. 5 perfume included the most beautiful women of the century. Chanel No. 5 was a favorite perfume of Jacqueline Kennedy. The perfume continues to be the ultimate symbol of classy sensuality. Marilyn Monroe:

”What do I wear in bed? Why, Chanel No. 5, of course.”

Chanel No. 5 is still the best-selling perfume in the world.

Chanel became one of the most famous and recognizable women in the world. Among her many friends and lovers were Pablo Picasso, ballet impresario Sergei Diaghilev, Igor Stravinsky, Jean Cocteau, and Winston Churchill. She had a 15-year affair with Hugh Richard Arthur Grosvenor, the Duke of Westminster. She was known to have enjoyed liaisons with women on occasion also.

She was noted as an especially intelligent, witty and original thinking woman. Picasso called her: ”The most sensible woman in the world”. She was irresistibly flirty, sharp, straightforward and a bit cynical.

Through the decades the Chanel Little Black Dress developed in to the classic choice for women. It has been often copied, redesigned and retailored. New versions continue to appear. I can confidently say that this dress will never go out of style.

Chanel said:

”Fashion fades, only style remains the same.”
