#BornThisDay: Musician, Tom Waits

December 7, 1949– Tom Waits:

“I’ve always been afraid I was going to tap the world on the shoulder for 30 years and when it finally turned around, I was going to forget what I had to say.”

He is decidedly not gay and most assuredly not everyone’s cup of tea, but not only is he a favorite at my house, taking up a large section of the “W”s in my CD collection, Thomas Alan Waits is the songwriter of a certain ditty that I wish to have played at my memorial service. Readers and husband, take note.

Academy Award nominated and Grammy Award winner, Waits has been one of my most influential musical artists because he has continuously created music outside of fad or fashion. His tunes are off-road adventures taken into the further beyond… way, way gone. Mixing and mashing, songs both sonic and sensual, musical traditions both new and old,  rhythms both mouth-made and sampled from his own instruments. He is equal parts Stephen FosterCole Porter  and Bob Dylan.

Waits’ songs are musical portraits of egregious, nefarious, seedy people and locations. They are musically complex and lyrically sophisticated considering the territory that he covers. Among the many versions of his songs done by other artists, some of my favorites are Jersey Girl as performed by Bruce Springsteen, and Downtown Train as sung by Rod Stewart. One of my favorite Jazz artists, the great Canadian songbird, Holly Cole, released an entire album of Waits cover versions, Temptation (1995), which is simply terrific. Actor Scarlett Johansson’s musical debut album, Anywhere I Lay My Head (2008) features covers of 10 Waits songs and it is shockingly fine. Who knew?

In 2011, Waits was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. He is also included among the 2010 list of Rolling Stone‍Magazine’s 100 Greatest Singers, and he is included on the new 2017 list of the magazines ’s 100 Greatest Songwriters Of All Time.

Waits has never had a commercial hit. Most of his songs are best known in recordings made by other people. He has a huge fan base, but rarely tours. His razor-sharp wit and lyrical prowess have put him in a category by himself. Just what that category is remains unclear. Waits has a voice that sounds as if it was soaked in whiskey, aged in the smokehouse and then run over by a 1954 Chevy pickup truck.

He has worked as a composer for movie and musicals and acted in films, including Robert Altman’s Short Cuts (1993) and Francis Ford Coppola’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992). He also starred in Jim Jarmusch’s Down By Law (1986) and Coffee And Cigarettes (1997). He was nominated for an Academy Award for his soundtrack for the underrated One From The Heart (1981). Waits wrote and performed the music for Bunny (1998), which won an Oscar Best Animated Short Film.

Waits has been a supporter of LGBTQ Rights for decades. I remember one of the first big benefits ever held in support of gay people, A Star Spangled Night For Rights at the Hollywood Bowl in 1977, had a bill that included Lily TomlinRichard PryorBette Midler and Waits. This was so long ago, LGBTQ wasn’t even an acronym, and many of you probably had not been born.

I have been listening to Waits for 45 years. I have many favorite Waits songs, but this one means so much to me that I want to leave this world with it as my soundtrack. If you’ve only been a passing listener to Waits, I highly recommend spending an evening with your favorite drink of choice (the harder the alcohol the better) and his The Heart Of Saturday Night album  from 1974 for a start.

Waits lives with his wife and collaborator, Kathleen Brennan in Sonoma.

So, here’s the song to play when I have kicked the bucket. Don’t forget. I am going to hold you to it.

I’m leaving my family
And leaving my friends
My body’s at home
But my heart’s in the wind
Where the clouds are like headlines
On a new front page sky
My tears are salt water
And the moon’s full and high
And I know Martin Eden’s
Gonna be proud of me
And many before me
Who’ve been called by the sea
To be up in the crow’s nest
And singin’ my say
Shiver me Timbers
I’m sailing away
The fog’s lifting
And the sand’s shifting
And I’m drifting on out
And Ol’ Captain Ahab
Ain’t got nothin’ on me
So come on and swallow me
Don’t me follow me
I travel alone
Blue water’s my daughter
And I’m gonna skip like a stone
And please call my missus
Tell her not to cry
My goodbye is written
By the moon in the sky
And nobody knows me
I can’t fathom my stayin’
And shiver me timbers
I’m sailing away
And I’m leaving my family
And I’m leaving my friends
My body’s at home
But my heart’s in the wind
Where the clouds are like headlines
On a new front page sky
And shiver me timbers
I’m sailing away

#QueerQuote: “Please Dear, Your Auntie Mame Is Hung.” – Mame Dennis Burnside

“Auntie Mame”, Warner Bros. Screenshot via YouTube

What other character can hold a bejeweled cigarette holder, let alone a candle, to Mame Dennis Burnside?

As played by Rosalind Russell, Auntie Mame is the draggiest queen of all time. Mame is giving you life with her endless parade of outfits, each more fabulous than the last. Unbelievable, the film version did not receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Costume Design. Auntie Mame is filled with yummy eye-candy. The art direction, set designs and cinematography are rich. And those costumes; all the young contestants on Project Runway should take notes on everything Orry-Kelly created for Russell to wear.

The film is based on the novel, Auntie Mame: An Irreverent Escapade (1955) by Edward Everett Tanner III, who wrote under the pen name Patrick Dennis. It was inspired by his real aunt, Marion Tanner. Mame in the book is a bawdier and brassier broad than the movie version. Dennis, who was gay, gave Mame a gay sensibility that somehow was embraced conservative McCarthy-era American readers. The book was huge bestseller.

The book is terrific, but the film stays closer to the stage version by gay writer Jerome Lawrence and his straight writing partner Robert E. Lee and directed by gay Morton DeCosta.

Mame instills in her young nephew Patrick an open mind, and takes him away from the provincial upbringing he was doomed to live before she came into his life.

Asians, Indians, Arabs, cross-dressers, lesbians, gay writers, nudists, cultural elites; if Mame had thrown a party like this in 2017, half those folks would have been rounded-up by ICE.

Russell originated the role of Auntie Mame on Broadway in 1956, earning a Tony Award nomination. For the film version, she won a Golden Globe Award and a fourth and final Academy Award nomination. She lost to Susan Hayward in I Want to Live! It wasn’t fair; being in a film that has a title featuring an exclamation point is a decidedly unfair advantage.

Every drag queen can learn how to throw shade from Mame. It’s a perfect gay Christmas-themed film. The Holiday scenes when Mame is flat broke and out of work show that the affection she has for Patrick, Ito and Nora (her domestic staff) is mutual. Like many LGBTQ people, Mame has a chosen family. I’ve only seen Auntie Mame 33 times.

Merry Christmas, Will Breyer is the Christmas classic you didn’t know you were waiting your whole life to watch. Stranger Thing‘s Will Breyer has a bad case of existential ennui since he’s returned from the Upside Down, and struggles (in a very Charlie Brownian manner) to make it through the holiday season. SO GOOD. Watch below.

Bryan Singer Sued for Sexual Assaulting 17-Year-Old Boy

TMZ is reporting today that director Bryan Singer is being sued for allegedly forcing a 17-year-old boy to perform oral sex on him and then raping him. Singer, off course, is denying the allegations.

According to the lawsuit, obtained by TMZ, Singer was on a yacht in the Seattle area back in 2003 … a yacht owned by wealthy tech investor, Lester Waters. The suit claims it was a party populated by young gay males, including the plaintiff, Cesar Sanchez-Guzman.

The suit claims Singer offered to take Guzman, who was 17 at the time, on a tour of the yacht. When they got to one of the rooms, the suit alleges Singer thrust his body on Guzman, forced him to the floor, shoved Guzman’s face against his crotch and demanded he perform oral sex.

The suit claims Singer pulled out his penis, smacked Guzman in the face with it and forced it into his mouth. Guzman claims he pleaded with Singer to stop, but he kept going … causing him to choke.

The suit goes on to allege Singer then forcibly performed oral sex on Guzman. Guzman says he again pleaded with Singer to stop, to no avail. He says Singer then forcibly anally penetrated him, all while ignoring Guzman’s pleas.

The suit, filed by attorney Jeff Herman, claims Singer later approached Guzman, said he was a powerful Hollywood producer and he could help Guzman get into acting as long as he kept silent. Guzman says Singer warned him no one would believe him, and Singer could hire people to ruin his reputation.

Guzman says he suffered emotional distress, mental anguish, and physical and mental pain.

Singer, for his part, is adamant this is another setup.

A rep for Singer tells TMZ, “The lawsuit was filed by the same lawyer who represented Michel Egan. Those claims were dismissed by Egan himself, and he later went to Federal prison for lying in a fraud case.” The rep also says Herman was sued by other defendants related to the Egan case for malicious prosecution and he settled and acknowledged Egan’s claims were provably false.

Of course, in addition to Egan’s claim, the X-Men director has been sued several times before. In 1997, a 14-year-old Apt Pupil claimed Singer forced him and other minors to strip naked and shower together for a scene. The case was thrown out.

In August 2014, another man filed a police report with the NYPD, accusing Singer of sexual assault in March 2013. That, too, was thrown out.

World of Wonder Announces Their Upcoming David Wojnarowicz Documentary

David Wojnarowicz was super-prolific painter, photographer, mixed-media artist, writer, Super-8 filmmaker, performance artist, song-writer/recording artist and outspoken AIDS activist who captivated Downtown New York and the art world throughout the late ’70s and ’80s, until his death in 1992 (age 37). World of Wonder announced today that he would be the subject of an upcoming documentary tentatively titled Wojnarowicz to be directed by Chris McKim (who previously did the Emmy-Award winning Out of Iraq).

According to the RealScreen announcement, the doc

“will provide unprecedented access into the New York-based artist’s archives and, with the full cooperation of his estate, will offer an intimate look at his life and career throughout the 1970s and 1980s.”

The documentary will feature Wojnarowicz’s collection of journals, letters, recordings and films, while also presenting interviews with his closest collaborators, friends and lovers.

Says WOW in a statement:

“The documentary is exceptionally timely in today’s political landscape, from police brutality, gun control debates, the fight for healthcare, immigration, equality and diversity – David’s work is as relevant today as it was in his time. The film will examine these issues through that work and add his voice to the resistance.”

(Top photo by Andreas Sterzing. A bit about the image, below, from Frieze.com‘s “A Stitch in Time”)

The first time I encountered lip sewing as protest was in Rosa von Praunheim’s extraordinary 1990 AIDS documentary, Silence = Death. One of the interviewees was the artist and activist David Wojnarowicz. A former street kid, a gay man who had recently been diagnosed with AIDS, he talked with great eloquence and fury about the different kinds of silence ranged against him. He spoke of what it had been like to grow up queer; the need to keep his sexuality secret because of the omnipresent threat of violence. He spoke of the silence of politicians, whose refusal to confront AIDS was hastening his own oncoming death. And, as he talked, footage he’d collaged together appeared on screen: a kaleidoscope of distress, which was later given the title A Fire in My Belly (1986–87). Ants crawl over a crucifix; a puppet dances on its strings; money pours from bandaged hands; a mouth is sewn shut, blood trickling from puncture wounds.

What is the stitched mouth doing? If silence equals death, the biting slogan of AIDS activists, then part of the work of resistance is to make visible the people who are being silenced. Carefully, carefully, the needle works through skin, self-inflicted damage announcing larger harm. ‘I think what I really fear about death is the silencing of my voice,’ Wojnarowicz says. ‘I feel this incredible pressure to leave something of myself behind.’

You make an image to communicate what is unsayable in words. You make an image to go on beyond you, to speak when you no longer can. The image can survive its creator’s death, but that doesn’t mean it is immune to the same forces of silencing that it protests. In 2010, nearly two decades after Wojnarowicz died of AIDS at the age of 37, A Fire in My Belly was removed from a landmark exhibition of gay art at the Smithsonian, in Washington DC, following complaints from right-wing politicians and the Catholic League. This time, the stitched mouth became a symbol of censorship. At protests, people held up posters of Wojnarowicz’s face, lantern-jawed, implacable, five stitches locking shut his lips.

Cannot WAIT for this.

Pornstars Want Jaxton Wheeler Blacklisted After He Called for August Ames to Take Cyanide

It’s a sad and messy story: Before she died this week of still-unknown causes, adult film star August Ames was taking a lot of heat on social media for warning a female performer that her partner had done gay porn before, saying she wouldn’t perform with men who did gay pornography and that it was a matter of personal health. She was blasted as homophobic by an onslaught of outraged Twitter users, among them, pansexual adult star Jaxton Wheeler who condemned her in a since-deleted tweet:

A horrible thing to say, made even more horrible because she later died.

Now, porn company Evil Angel said that they would never hire Jaxton Wheeler again, with other performers calling for an industry-wide blacklisting of the actor.

More on the story here. (via ONTD)

LGBTQ: “Piggie Park BBQ” Supreme Court Case from 50 Years Ago has a Parallel to Today’s Gay Wedding Cake Case

$
0
0

Shortly after the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, two African-Americans, Anne P. Newman and a friend, were refused service at Piggie Park, a drive-in BBQ chain of four spots in Columbia, South Carolina, created and operated by Maurice Bessinger, the Baptist head of the National Association for the Preservation of White People. Newman joined in a class-action lawsuit, Newman v. Piggie Park Enterprises that made its way through the court system to wind up at the United States Supreme Court.

Bessinger argued, among other things, that the Civil Rights Act violated his constitutional right to religious freedom. Bessinger claimed that his deeply held religious beliefs held that there can be no “integration of the races whatsoever”.

The plaintiffs had a victory that helped advance Civil Rights, including the establishment of the concept that Religious Views do not trump Civil Rights.

In 2000, when the South Carolina legislature voted to move the Confederate flag from atop the statehouse, Bessinger responded by flying a Confederate flag over each of his four Piggie Parks. That led to an NAACP boycott of his Carolina Gold BBQ Sauce at Walmart and other stores. Bessinger claimed the boycott cost his business $20 million.

In the 1950s and 1960s, Bessinger put signs in his store windows saying ”No Coloreds Allowed”, plus he sold pro-slavery audiotapes in the flagship Piggie Park.

This week’s Supreme Court argument, Masterpiece Cakeshop Ltd. v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission, where Jack Phillips the Colorado baker who refused to make a cake for Charlie Craig and David Mullins, reminds some of us of South Carolina’s Piggie Park BBQ.

In 1966, U.S. District Judge Charles Earl Simons Jr. wrote:

“Undoubtedly defendant Bessinger has a constitutional right to espouse the religious beliefs of his own choosing, however, he does not have the absolute right to exercise and practice such beliefs in utter disregard of the clear constitutional rights of other citizens…”

By the time SCOTUS heard the case in 1968, the issue was the award of fees to the lawyers representing the black South Carolinians who sued and won over Bessinger’s Piggie Parks. But in a footnote to its 8-0 opinion, the court called the religious freedom argument “patently frivolous”.

The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund said in a Supreme Court brief:

“The logic of Piggie Park and other precedents overwhelmingly rejecting religious justifications for racial discrimination apply squarely to the context of LGBTQ discrimination.”

Both cases involve laws intended to prevent discrimination by private businesses that open their doors to the public. In the case of Piggie Park, the law was the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The bakery case involves the Colorado Anti-Discrimination Act, which prohibits businesses from refusing to sell their goods and services to people on the basis of religion, sex, race, national origin, handicap or sexual orientation.

As the case has come to SCOTUS, the focus is on Phillips’ free speech rights, not his religious beliefs. As an ”artist”, he claims a right to not say something with which he disagrees. Phillips’ lawyers also say the baker’s issue is not with LGBTQ people, but with Marriage Equality. The Alliance Defending Freedom, representing Phillips, claims he will sell pre-made goods to anyone who walks in the store. He also would make a cake celebrating “a marriage between a man and a woman even if one or both spouses identified as gay, lesbian or bisexual”. What a zany cake that would be!

The Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) was founded in 1994 by the Christian Right. They provide training for groups and individuals that support the recriminalization of homosexuality in the U.S. and criminalization abroad. They have defended state-sanctioned sterilization of trans-people, linked homosexuality to pedophilia, and claim that the “homosexual agenda” will destroy society. ADF works to develop Religious Liberty legislation that will allow the denial of goods and services to LGBTQ people on the basis of religion. The group is very dangerous, having managed to win special advisory status at the United Nations, in the European Union, and with the Organization of American States.

Laws that regulate speech, as Phillips and his lawyers assert the Colorado anti-discrimination law does, must withstand the toughest level of scrutiny that courts can apply. They rely on a 1995 unanimous SCOTUS decision allowing organizers of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Boston to exclude LGBTQ groups from the parade. Speech restrictions rarely survive at the Supreme Court.

The Trump administration has filed a brief for the case on Phillips’ side. They claim that speech restrictions aimed at race are different than those aimed at LGBTQ people.

The Administration (not POTUS himself, because there are too many big words for him) claims that a ruling in favor of the baker would not call into question the use of public accommodations laws that prohibit racial discrimination:

“As the court recently observed, ‘racial bias’ is ‘a familiar and recurring evil’ that poses ‘unique historical, constitutional and institutional concerns.'”

Meanwhile, back at Piggie Park, when Bissninger died in 2013, his kids removed all Confederate paraphernalia from their drive-ins and took down the Confederate flags. His son, Lloyd Bissinger said: “Dad liked politics. That’s not something we’re interested in doing. We want to serve great barbecue.”

Masterpiece Cakeshop Ltd. v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission will be decided in summer 2018, the ruling will have a significant effect on LGBTQ Rights for decades to come.

In a crazy coincidence Piggie Park was the name of a notorious 1970s-era private sex club in Oakland, no relationship to the BBQ joint.

You went along for the ride to Walgreens with Coco Peru in search of Sweet Jesus candy canes and to Walmart to find a Wonder Woman crock pot. (Spoiler Alert: She didn’t find either.)

Now she’s headed to Costco for what? A big bag of blueberries? Something tells me this might not be so productive. Her post on Facebook said,

“It didn’t go as planned.”

Watch.

The trip to K-Mart a few years ago was a bit more productive. (Not really.)

Watch.

Rohina Bhandari, a Wall Street private equity manager was killed by a tiger shark while diving with a group off a Costa Rican island.

Bhandari suffered fatal bites to both her legs Thursday while diving with a group near Cocos Island, a national park about 300 miles off the Costa Rican mainland, the environment ministry said in a statement.

Julie Walker, a friend on Facebook said,

“Unbelievably sad and heartbreaking news that Rohina has died. She was such a wonderful person who loved life. I will always remember her kindness, friendship and our adventures together.”

According to a report in the local La Nacion, it was the group’s diving guide who noticed the shark approaching and tried to scare it away. As they surfaced, the shark swam directly at Bhandari and starting biting her legs. The guide tried to assist, but he got bitten too.

A group of doctors, also diving in the area, declaring her dead at the scene. The injured guide was taken to a hospital. He’s in stable condition and expected to survive.

Bhandari was a senior director at WL Ross & Co. LL, a firm founded by Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross. She often attended New York City charity events and lived on the Upper East Side.

Ashley Gendron also wrote a remembrance on her Facebook page,

“Rohina you were the brightest of lights that went out much too soon. My life was richer for having known you.”

#BornThisDay: Wicked Witch of the West, Margaret Hamilton

December 9, 1902– Margaret Hamilton

I was shocked to read that tweet from POTUS dissing Hamilton. A year ago, he tweeted: “Very rude and insulting of Hamilton to treat our great V.P. Mike Pence to a theater lecture. Couldn’t even memorize lines.” That seemed so unnecessary. She was an accomplished and interesting woman, even if she was not a ten. I don’t blame her for booing Pence . The idea of flying monkeys offends his deeply held religious beliefs.

One of my favorite films of the early 1970s is director Robert Altman’s Brewster McCloud, which on initial release, I saw in the theatre multiple times. Brewster McCloud is a film about flying, and it pays homage to Margaret Hamilton’s iconic character of the Wicked Witch Of The West. In the film, Hamilton plays a wealthy woman who is crushed by a large birdhouse. As the camera pans down her body, you see that on her feet are those Ruby Slippers.

Hamilton was an exceptional character actor who never asked for more than $1000 for her work, for fear she would price herself out of a film role. She had a career that lasted five decades, with more than 70 films, but we all remember her best for a certain green-skinned witch in the MGM classic The Wizard Of Oz (1939), which is one of my top films of all time. TheWizard Of Oz did not bring Hamilton fortune, but it really did bring her forever fame. Despite the attention, not much happened for her career after the excitement over the film’s initial release died down. It wasn’t until the 1970s that her career blossomed once more as she was rediscovered by a whole new generation of film fans

As spokesperson for Maxwell House Coffee, Hamilton created a character, Cora, an elderly shopkeeper with that no nonsense New England charm. The ads proved very popular and Hamilton was once again in the spotlight that she deserved. Cora was so popular that she even had her own cookbook, with Hamilton’s image on the cover.

I’ve always had a special place in my heart for Hamilton. As Almira Gulch, the busybody who stuffed Toto into the picnic basket, or the Wicked Witch Of The West, Hamilton brought her characters to life with her expressive crusty features and her crisp voice with its rat-tat-tat clear enunciation.

Hamilton’s line from The Wizard Of Oz: “I’ll get you, my pretty… and your little dog, too!” was ranked 99th in the American Film Institute’s The 100 Most Memorable Movie Quotes. Her son, interviewed for a special DVD edition of the film in 2005, commented that Hamilton enjoyed the line so much she would use it in real life. Her character is ranked Number Four on the American Film Institute’s list of the 50 Best Movie Villains Of All Time, making her the top female baddie.

Believe it or not, she appeared in The Wizard Of Oz for a total of only 12 minutes, but what an impact she made. Yet, Hamilton really suffered for her art. During shooting of her exit from Munchkinland via a trapdoor’s drop, the special effect flames failed to work properly and Hamilton received second-degree burns on her face and hands. She spent six weeks recovering in the hospital and at home for another six weeks before she could return to the set, where she refused to do any scenes that involved the fire effects for the rest of the filming. The producers used a stand-in. Hamilton:

“I didn’t sue, because I know how this business works, and I would never work again. I returned to work on one condition no more fireworks!”

MGM producer Mervyn LeRoy asked for cuts to some of Hamilton’s scariest scenes, worrying that they would frighten children too much. Hamilton:

“I was in a need of money at the time, I had done about six pictures for MGM and my agent called. I said: ‘Yes?’ and he said ‘Maggie, they want you to play a part on the Wizard’. I said to myself, ‘Oh, Boy, The Wizard Of Oz! That has been my favorite book since I was four years old.’ I asked him what part, and he said: ‘The Witch’, and I said: ”Which With?’  and he said: ‘The Witch! What else?'”

Hamilton went on to work with some of her favorite The Wizard Of Oz co-stars again. The great Frank Morgan, who played Professor Marvel and The Wizard, had no scenes with Hamilton in The Wizard Of Oz, but she had already played his housekeeper in Saratoga (1937). She has a fun turn with Judy Garland in Babes In Arms (1939) as a society woman with schemes to send the group of kid actors to a work farm. She played the comically tough-talking sister of Jack Haley (The Tin Man) in George White’s Scandals (1945). Hamilton and Ray Bolger (The Scarecrow) worked together again in The Daydreamer (1966), and together on Broadway in the musical flop Come Summer (1969). Little known tid-bit: Hamilton was reunited with a bunch of her former Oz cast members when she served as host for Flying Monkeys On Ice, an all-simian skating revue in Vegas.

Hamilton was one of those working actors who took roles wherever she could find them. She continued to find work in television doing daytime soap operas and prime time series, including a stint as Hester Frump, Morticia Addams’ mother on The Addams Family. (1965–68).

Hamilton eventually returned to the Broadway stage where she began her career. She had a supporting role in one of my favorite forgotten musicals, Goldilocks (1958), opposite Don Ameche and Elaine Stritch. She was in a popular revival of Show Boat (1966), plus as Aunt Eller in Oklahoma! (1968) at Lincoln Center. I saw Hamilton in her final stage role as Madame Armfeldt in Stephen Sondheim’s musical A Little Night Music.

Hamilton loved kids. She was a teacher before her acting career, and she was an advocate for causes protecting children and animals. During her Hollywood years, Hamilton served on the Beverly Hills School Board.

Hamilton lived in NYC for most of her adult life. She had an apartment in my most very favorite of NYC neighborhoods, Gramercy Park, in a building where she had actor James Cagney as a neighbor. She took her final curtain call in 1985. She was 82-years-old when she left this world. Hamilton’s Wicked Witch Of The West scared a lot of kids through the decades, but in real life, she seemed to have been a real sweetheart.

#DumbAndDumberAndDumbest: Melania Gets Pearl Harbor Date Wrong, Trump Misquotes FDR & Ivanka Gives Us a “Peak”

We are all human and we ALL make mistakes. (You can probably find some I made in this post.) But once you are in the spotlight and tweeting as FLOTUS, POTUS or the First Daughter, you’d better double-check your work. And watch out for trolls.

Melania wrote, in a now-deleted tweet,

“Today we honor Pearl Harbor heroes 11/7/1941. Thank you to all military for your courage and sacrifice.”

Hey, cut her some slack! She was only off by a month. (Pearl Harbor is Dec. 7, not in November, as every third grader knows.)

The tweet was deleted and republished with the correct date, but do you think Twitter let it go? Yeah, no. Two of my faves were,

“What happened to 11/7/1941? That was a bigly day! I miss the old tweet!”

“Waiting for when 9/11 comes around and we remember 8/11.”

Trump also made an error in his own tweet commemorating Pearl Harbor, misquoting President Roosevelt’s speech following the bombing. Trump wrote:

“National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day – “A day that will live in infamy!” December 7, 1941.”

Right date this time, wrong quote. Again, grade schoolers know FDR’s speech by heart (at least THAT part) It is

“a date which will live in infamy.”

As the man NEVER admits mistakes, he didn’t delete the misquote, following up his message with an even longer tweet.

And Ivanka wanted in on this dumbass action too and Instagrammed a pic of her kid under her skirt and wrote,

“Peak-a-boo.”

For those of you making notes, it’s “peek” unless she was referring to this nightmare of an administration’s comparison to Twin Peaks.

My fave response had to do with her Dad peeking out from behind bars.

Think I’m being unfair? People make mistakes, right? (65 million Americans made a BIG ONE last November.) Kids, this is only two days this week. You want MORE examples?

OK jeez, it’s still early, I need to wake up. Anyone wanna covfefe?
