Tom Spanbauer grew up on a farm outside Pocatello, Idaho. In 1969, he received his BA in English literature from Idaho State University. After graduating, Spanbauer served in the Peace Corps in Kenya for two years. He returned to Idaho, but in 1978, he decided he needed leave that state. He moved around, landing in New Hampshire, Vermont, and Key West. He studied at Columbia University while waiting tables at Manhattan eateries like Odeon and being a super for five buildings on East Fifth Street. In 1988, he received an MFA in fiction from Columbia.

In 1991, Tom settled in Portland where he teaches Dangerous Writing in the basement of his house. At least 40 of his students have published novels and/or memoirs, including: Chuck Palahniuk, Monica Drake, Cheryl Strayed, Chelsea Cain, and Lidia Yuknavitch.

His five novels are: Faraway Places (1989), The Man Who Fell In Love With The Moon (1991), In The City Of Shy Hunters (2001), Now Is The Hour (2007), and I Loved You More (2015).

As an openly gay HIV+ writer, he explores issues of race and sexual identity. Spanbauer writes on his website that his work is about:

“…how we make a family for ourselves in order to surmount the limitations of the families into which we are born.”

#WTF?!?: Jimmy Kimmel Says He Would Love to Fight Pervy Roy Moore

Kimmel, “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, ABC To Go, via Youtube

During his monologue on Thursday night, November 30, cutie talk show host Jimmy Kimmel (the good Jimmy) shared with his audience the “Twitter war” he’d had with Alabama Senate candidate and noted pervert Roy Moore earlier in the day. During the Twitter exchange, Moore invited Kimmel to come down to Alabama to see him “man to man”.

Kimmel:

“And I responded, and he responded back, and I responded again. It’s all on Twitter, but the bottom line is this: I accept the invitation. I will come down there.”

Moore, as you know, has been accused of sexually harassing teenage girls.

Kimmel then began to mock Moore, who had reportedly been banned from a mall in Gadsden, Alabama for stalking young girls:

“What I’m gonna do is, and I think you’re actually going to like this, Roy, I’m going to come down to Gadsden, Alabama, with a team of high school cheerleaders. We’ll meet you at the mall. Don’t worry, I can get you in.”

Kimmel then took it even further, and he pointed out that Moore’s tweets seemed to be a challenge to a fight.

Kimmel:

“If you are, I accept by the way. I accept that invitation. There is no one I would love to fight more than you. I will put my Christian values aside just for you and for that fight. There is no one I would love to fight more than you. I will put my Christian values aside just for you, and for that fight.”

The night before, Jimmy Kimmel Live! sent a fictional character, Jake Byrd, (played by award-winning comic and writer Tony Barbie) to mockingly defend Moore while he was giving a speech at a church in Alabama.

The next day, Moore responded to the prank by baiting Kimmel on Twitter:

“If you want to mock our Christian values, come down here to Alabama and do it man to man.”

Kimmel tweeted back:

“Sounds great Roy – let me know when you get some Christian values and I’ll be there!”.

Then, Moore responded with:

“Despite D.C. and Hollywood Elites”bigotry towards southerners, Jimmy, we’ll save you a seat on the front pew.”

Kimmel continued to share their banter during his show on Thursday. Jimmy Kimmel, my hero!

Kimmel:

“So, if you are challenging me to a fight, here’s what we will do: Let’s find a place to do it, I’ll wear a Girl Scout uniform so you can have something to get excited about, and the winner — whoever wins the fight — will give all the money we charge for the tickets to charity. My charity will be the women who came forward to say you molested them. All right, tough guy with your little pistol?”

Photo: CNN via YouTube

In the last month, multiple women have come forward to accuse Moore, who was removed from office as Chief Justice of Alabama’s Supreme court, of preying on them when they were just teenagers. Moore denies the allegations against him. Many Republicans have called on Moore quit the race for the Alabama Senate seat left vacant by little Jeff Sessions’ appointment to Attorney General. Some have even considered expelling Moore from the Senate, even if he gets elected, which would be unprecedented.

The tweets continue. Kimmel:

“We love Alabama. We love Alabama so much we sent Reese Witherspoon to make a movie about you. We just don’t like alleged child molesters, and we hope you can see your way clear to not electing one to the Senate of the United States of America.”

The special election for Alabama’s Senate seat is on Tuesday, December 12. So, there is still time for fisticuffs.

The Sweeping Tax Scam Just Passed By the Senate Will Royally F*ck Our Health Care System

$

The Republican tax overhaul that just squeaked through the Senate last night will, excuse the bluntness, TOTALLY FUCK nation’s health-care system. It is a sharp knife that GUTS Affordable Care Act.

It abolishes the government’s enforcement of the ACA requirement that most Americans carry insurance coverage. It would not end the individual mandate itself, but it eliminates tax penalties for not meeting the requirement. 13 million will be uninsured and drive up insurance premiums in marketplaces created under the law.

Now that both chambers of Congress have passed versions of the biggest rewrite of tax law in decades, the differences will have to be negotiated.

According to the Washington Post, the cuts will decrease federal spending on Medicare by 4 percent — amounting to about $25 million next year, the Congressional Budget Office forecast. The funding loss would be spread among payments to doctors, hospitals and others that provide care to the program’s 56 million older and disabled Americans.

It would eliminate nearly $1 billion a year for a Prevention and Public Health Fund, created under the ACA, that now represents 12 percent of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s budget.

If that fund disappears, people are going to be sicker with low-income Americans less-likely to get tested for breast or colon cancer and public health workers less able to control outbreaks of contagious infections.

Advocates for vulnerable groups of Americans fear that the sheer magnitude of the bill’s deficit increase — $1.5 trillion in the coming decade — would give conservatives in Congress reason to shrink social safety-programs that they have long hoped to target. David Certner, legislative counsel for AARP said.

That is ultimately the most troubling part. We create these large deficits and that will put pressure for cuts to Medicare, Medicaid… Everything will be on the table.

#DeplorableWear: Walmart Pulls Its “Rope. Tree. Journalist.” Tee From Their Website

Walmart has pulled a t-shirt offered by an outside seller from its online store after a journalist advocacy group said to the retailer that it found the shirt threatening.

The shirt, listed on Walmart.com through third-party seller Teespring, said:

“Rope. Tree. Journalist. SOME ASSEMBLY REQUIRED.”

Walmart said,

This item was sold by a third-party seller on our marketplace and clearly violates our policy. We removed it as soon as it was brought to our attention, and are conducting a thorough review of the seller’s assortment.

Teespring, which allows people to post shirt designs, confirmed that the shirt has been pulled and said it is working to prevent such content from slipping through its filters. The company said,

As soon as we were alerted to this content promoting violence against journalists we removed the content, added this content to our automated scanning systems, and kicked off a human sweep of the site to find and remove any similar content.

The Radio Television Digital News Association said Walmart notified it about five hours after its complaint that the shirt was being removed. The group’s executive director, Dan Shelley said,

We are grateful for Walmart’s swift action, but dismayed that it, and anyone else selling the shirt, would offer such an offensive and inflammatory product.

A shirt with the same sentiment had been spotted at a rally during the presidential campaign.

#KillMeNow: This is a Suicide Machine, the Sarco Capsule (& It Doubles as a Coffin)

Nitschke with a do-it-yourself goodbye kit

Australia’s best-known euthanasia activist, Dr. Philip Nitschke, is in the news with a machine for committing suicide, the Sarco capsule.

It allows anyone who has the access key to end their life by simply pressing a button. Developed in the Netherlands by Nitschke and an engineer, the machine can be 3D printed and assembled anywhere. Access to the Sarco capsule will be by an on-line mental questionnaire which will provide a four-digit access code.

When you activate it liquid nitrogen will rapidly drop the oxygen level, leading to death a few minutes. Nitschke says that the world is now one step closer to the goal where any rational person can electively end their life in a peaceful and reliable way at the time of their choosing.

“Sarco does not use any restricted drugs, or require any special expertise such as the insertion of an intravenous needle. Anyone who can pass the entry test, can enter the machine and legally end their life.”

But each state and country has its own nuanced set of rules around medical aid in dying, while Nitschke believes the right to die is a human right, not a medical or legal privilege. ”

No one should be subject to rules about whether or not a person is sick enough to choose to die, he said.

It is the “right of a rational adult to have a peaceful deathEvery person over the age of 70 should be able to die.

Of course, not everyone agrees with Nitschke. Dr. Daniel Sulmasy, a Georgetown professor of biomedical ethics, told Newsweek.

I think it’s bad medicine, ethics and bad public policy. It converts killing into a form of healing and doesn’t acknowledge that we can now do more for symptoms through palliative than ever before.

Sulmasy believes assisted suicide violates the bedrock of all ethical thinking, which is that people have value simply by being human beings.

Nitschke argues that palliative care isn’t for everybody. People in good health have approached him simply because they feel that they’ve had a good life and are ready to go, he said. He believes that they have just as much a right to death as anyone else.

The death doctor, now a septuagenarian himself, is also coming to terms with his own mortality. And his invention might be his solution.

I’ve thought about it a lot lately. I am attracted to the idea of the Sarco, and if I find myself in a situation where I need to use it, I will.

As a bonus, that the user need not worry about, the capsule can be detached from the Sarco machine and used as a hi-tech coffin and the machine base can be re-used.

Trump is in NYC, believe it or not for FUNDRAISING!? (This guy thinks he’s running in 2020 but who knows, he could be POTUS for life if we stay on this course…)

BLOTUS’s motorcade was greeted this morning in Manhattan by a large group of protestors chanting,

Lock him up!” and “Traitor!

These videos posted to Twitter also show a crowd of protestors chanting,

Hey hey, ho ho, Donald Trump has got to go!” And…

“Shame! Shame! Shame!”

They booed the Presidential motorcade as it drove by. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and White House counsel Kellyanne Conway are also with Trump.

A trio of creeps.

#BornThisDay: Composer, Nino Rota

Nino Rota, Public Domain via Houston Public Media

December 3, 1911– Nino Rota

At 14-years-old and feeling highly romantic, I couldn’t have been more captivated by the Franco Zeffirelli film version of William Shakespeare’s Romeo And Juliet (1968). Most assuredly, the memory of the sight of the naked backside of Leonard Whiting meant lots of crumpled tissues under my bed when I was a teenager. I also totally fell in love with the score for this film. At the time, I was studying improvisational piano with an amazing, inspiring teacher who coached me through working on playing the theme from Romeo And Juliet, which brought me much happiness.

This version of the Shakespeare play was my first encounter with the music of Nino Rota, and the beginning of my love for all things Italian. At that point I had yet to see a Federico Fellini film. That would not happen for another four years when I saw Satyricon (1969) at a revival house in Boston… while on acid!

Rota was a pianist, conductor, noted academic, and one of the most important composers in Film History. Popular and prolific (171 films), Rota wrote some of the most memorable and loved film scores, including The Godfather Parts I and II (1972, 1974), The Leopard (1963), Zeffirelli’s other popular Shakespeare films, nearly all of Fellini’s output, along with more than 140 other Italian films.

Yet, his music does not quite work in the way that we have come to assume music in film scores work. His music does not seek to draw the audience in, or to overwhelm and excite. His music is lovely, yet reticent, at once comic and touching, with a direct relation to what is going on onscreen. Rota’s musical scores are close and affectionate towards a film’s characters and story lines, but restrained, not detached, but ironically attached.

Born Giovanni Rota Rinaldi in Milan, part of a large family of musicians, Rota and household moved to Rome while he was still a kid. He studied music at the prestigious Conservatory Of Santa Cecilia, graduating when he was only 17-years-old. Rota was an “enfant prodige”, famous both as a composer and as an orchestra conductor while still a teenager. His first oratorio L’infanzia Di San Giovanni Battista, was performed in Milan and Paris in 1923, when he was just 12-years-old. His lyrical comedy, Il Principe Porcaro, was composed in 1926. From 1930 to 1932, Rota lived in the USA, after he won a scholarship to the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia where he studied composition and orchestration, taught by composer Fritz Reiner.

Rota returned to Italy and earned another degree, this one in World Literature from the University Of Milan. In 1937, at 26-years-old, he began a teaching career that led to becoming the Director of the Bari Music Conservatory, a title he held from 1950 until he left this world in 1979.

After his childhood compositions, Rota began to write operas and ballets. He also composed hundreds of works for orchestra that are still performed by symphonies all over our pretty planet. In 1944, Rota was commissioned for his first film score by director Renato Castellani for Zaza (1942). The result brought him significant success, and Rota worked again with Castellani on Father, My Son (1946).

Rota is probably most noted for his work with Fellini.  He began his relationship with the director in 1952, producing a brilliant, exciting score for The White Sheik (1952). A score for I Vitelloni (1953) followed and then La Strada (1954). Roto described these collaborations with Fellini as ones that were always meant to exist, that when the two of them worked together, everything fell in place in a perfect semblance. They continued to work together for decades, producing close to 70 scores.

He also composed the music for films by other directors: Luchino Visconti, Zeffirelli, Francis Ford Coppola (Rota won an Academy Award for Best Original Score for The Godfather: Part II (1974), King Vidor, and René Clement. He also did the music for many theatre productions by Visconti and Zeffirelli. In 1995, he founded The Nino Rota Foundation at the fabulous Fondazione Cini in Venice, specializing in the study and archiving of the works of 20th century Italian composers.

Fellini on Rota:

“He was someone who had a rare quality belonging to the world of intuition. Just like children, simple men, sensitive people, innocent people, he would suddenly say dazzling things. As soon as he arrived, stress disappeared, everything turned into a festive atmosphere; the movie entered a joyful, serene, fantastic period, a new life.”

“He was the most precious collaborator I have ever had. The connection between us was immediately, a complete, total, harmony. He had a geometric imagination, a musical approach worthy of celestial spheres. He thus had no need to see images from my movies. When I asked him about the melodies he had in mind to comment one sequence or another, I clearly realized he was not concerned with images at all. His world was inner, inside himself, and reality had no way to enter it.”

Rota was openly gay, but very quietly so. My research points to no boyfriends or longtime attachments. His best friend was prolific Italian screenwriter Suso Cecchi D’Amico, who did the screenplay for the classic The Bicycle Thief (1948). He had a close, loving, lifelong friendship with composer Igor Stravinsky, and he was very chummy with gay composer Aaron Copland while studying at the Curtis Institute, in fact it was Copland who inspired Rota’s interest in writing music for film. But, I can’t find anything that definitively shows that they might have been lovers.

Rota took his final bow in his apartment in Rome in 1979, taken by a heart attack at 67-years-old.

“If anyone reckons that all that I am attempting to express in my music is a little nostalgia and lots of humor and optimism, well then, that is exactly how I would like to be remembered.”

Alex Jones Does His Impression of Brain-Eating Lesbians –“I’m Gonna Eat Your Cerebral Cortex Last!” Watch

Alex Jones is a nut. That’s obvious. And it is often asked “Why keeping making stupid people famous?” Well, he already has plenty of listeners who take him seriously, so it’s not like I’m promoting his ideas. Sometimes, you can’t resist something SO absurd that it seems like parody. (I’m pretty sure this is the reason SNL has never parodied him. He’s already over-the-top-of-the-top. Where do you go?)

This week Jones on yet another bizarre rant on Info Wars where he accused liberal lesbians of wanting to slap women around.

Most of the so-called liberal lesbians, they just wanna have the guy with the duck’s ass haircut and the James Dean outfit. They want to be slapping girls around, and statistically it shows it.

Um, no statistics offered.

I’m not blaming all lesbians, but it shows that most of these butch lesbians, they want to be the guy smacking the hot chick around. They think that’s manly.

A lot of the chicks, they like it. Because no man will do that to them, and I’m not saying it’s good if a man does that, but some women like it.”

Jones went on to accuse these lesbians of eating their victims’ brains.

They want to strap you down and take a buzz saw and cut the top of your head off like a pumpkin and pull it off and get a little spoon and go, looking in the mirror, ‘I’m gonna eat your brain now!’”

He then does an impression of the brain-eating lesbians.

I’m gonna eat your cerebral cortex last! I’ve got power! I love Satan! And I’m gonna suck you dry… and you’re gonna follow my liberal orders!

That’s entertainment? If you’re laughing, maybe. If you take him seriously, there’s something really wrong with YOU.

Watch.

Trump Tweets Denial That He Ordered a Stop to the Flynn Investigation (Comey Then Shades Him on Instagram)

In a series of early morning tweets, Trump blasted the FBI and made some fresh denials. He says he never ordered former FBI Director James Comey to halt the investigation into National Security Advisor Mike Flynn. Trump tweeted,

I never asked Comey to stop investigating Flynn. Just more Fake News covering another Comey lie!

After years of Comey, with the phony and dishonest Clinton investigation (and more), running the FBI, its reputation is in Tatters – worst in History! But fear not, we will bring it back to greatness.“

He also referenced a report Saturday that an FBI agent reassigned by Special Counsel Robert Mueller for alleged anti-Trump texts was under investigation for his role in the Hillary Clinton emails probe.

Tainted (no, very dishonest?) FBI “agent’s role in Clinton probe under review.” Led Clinton Email probe. @foxandfriends Clinton money going to wife of another FBI agent in charge.

Report: “ANTI-TRUMP FBI AGENT LED CLINTON EMAIL PROBE” Now it all starts to make sense!

Trump stoked the controversy further yesterday, claiming that one of the reasons he had sacked Flynn was that he had lied to the FBI.

I had to fire General Flynn because he lied to the Vice President and the FBI.

Critics jumped on the fact that if Trump knew that Flynn had committed a felony by lying to the FBI and urged Comey not to investigate Flynn then he committed obstruction of justice. Walter Shaub, the former head of the U.S. Office of Government Ethics, asked in a tweet Saturday afternoon.

Are you ADMITTING you knew Flynn had lied to the FBI when you asked Comey to back off Flynn?

Shortly after Trump’s Saturday tweet, Comey offered what is no doubt a commentary on Trump’s new claims writing in the caption of his second Instagram post ever,

Beautiful Long Island Sound from Westport, CT. To paraphrase the Buddha — Three things cannot be long hidden: the sun; the moon; and the truth.

Mic drop.

Model Jason Boyce Sues Photographer Bruce Weber For “Forcing Him to Rub His Own Genitals”

Model Jason Boyce is suing photographer Bruce Weber for allegedly forcing him to rub his own genitals — and sucking on the his fingers in a creepy casting session.

The incident with Weber occurred three years ago in December of 2014 at the photographer’s Manhattan studio.

According to the Manhattan Supreme Court suit, when Boyce arrived for the shoot three years ago, Weber closed the door to the studio, leaving the two alone in a back room,

“Mr. Boyce, who had been photographed numerous times in the past, was then subjected to a series of practices by Mr. Weber that were unlike any he had experienced previously.”

Weber told Boyce,

“You’re very tense.”

He then straddled him and rubbed oil onto his forehead. According to the suit,

“Mr. Weber then instructed Mr. Boyce to stand up for more photographs.”

Weber told Boyce to take off his shirt and pants. Boyce obeyed, remembering his agent’s instructions that he had to “nail this” because of Weber’s influence in the industry.

But he froze when Weber asked him to expose his genitals, the papers say. Weber then removed Boyce’s underwear, the suit says.

After taking more photographs, Weber “instructed Mr. Boyce to put his hands on himself, ‘wherever you feel your energy go. When Boyce put his hand on his chest, Weber moved it down to his groin.

According to the New York Post,

“Mr. Weber grabbed Mr. Boyce’s arm, and moved it back and forth, so that Mr. Boyce was forced to rub his own genitals.”

Weber then moved Mr. Boyce’s hand to his own groin and put the model’s fingers in his mouth, the suit says.

Boyce recalls being “terrified and repulsed.”

Weber allegedly whispered, “If you just had confidence, you’d go really far” and “How far do you want to make it? How ambitious are you?”

When Boyce didn’t respond, Weber removed the model’s fingers from his mouth, dropped his hand from his genitals and said, “You know what? Put your underwear on. I think we’re done here.”

But before Boyce could leave, Weber allegedly grabbed him and kissed him on the lips. The next day, Boyce’s agent asked how it went, and he texted back, “weird.”

The suit says,

“Mr. Boyce felt intense dread at the thought of a modeling career in an industry where Mr. Weber was considered by many to be a top photographer and primary champion of male models,

He was worried that he would continue to run into Mr. Weber throughout his career. He experienced anxiety, depression, and high levels of stress.”

So he moved back to California and never returned to New York for modeling work, the suit says. Boyce’s agent dropped him in September 2016.

The floodgates are open. Here comes the deluge.

Eartha Kitt

Duane Michals: Portraits is the photographers first comprehensive overview of more than a half-century of portrait photography.

For decades, Michals was a sought-after editorial photographer for leading magazines, shooting many of the major creative personalities of our time, like Barbra Streisand, Johnny Cash, Dustin Hoffman, Robin Williams, Tilda Swinton, Andy Warhol, David Hockney, Jasper Johns, Norman Mailer, John Cheever and going back to René Magritte.

In the early 60s, Michals pioneered something called the photographic narrative sequence, using multiple images combined with text to create stories that were paradoxical, playful, and poetic. In one sequence, titled The Spirit Leaves The Body, from 1968 the image repeats in six frames the same naked figure lying on a bed in an empty room, a transparent silhouette rising out of it in the subsequent frames—sitting up, standing, and walking toward the camera—until the figure is left, again, inert and alone. A show of these early sequences, at MoMA in 1970, acknowledged him as the godfather of the form.

But Michals had to make a living, and he often worked on assignment for the major magazines of the time, making editorial portraits of notable figures.

The book includes many of these commercial pictures, as well as portraits of Michals’s friends and artistic heroes such as René Magritte, 1965, which uses double exposure to capture the artist in his signature bowler hat.

In the diptych Andy Warhol and His Mother, Julia Warhola, 1958, you can see the stirrings of Michals’s narrative tendencies: Warhol’s mother, with whom he lived his entire life, is seated in the foreground and Warhol is seated behind her: in the first frame, her image is crisp and Warhol’s is blurred; in the second, the focus is reversed.

In the book’s intro, Michals describes the frustration he often felt at the predictability of his portrait sessions with public figures:

First the pleasantries. Hello, yes, nice, good times, do you like my hair? This is my preferred side.

He’d wait patiently until, say, the subject sneezed.

A reflex. A surprise! I’ve found the surprise, the metaphysical glance. I am delighted by its unexpected pureness.

It would make a great holiday gift (hint, hint) You can get it here.

Alex Moffat as Billy Bush on SNL

Former Access Hollywood host, Billy Bush resurfaced twice over the weekend, first on SNL in a sketch where, played by Alex Moffet, he tells Trump, played by Alec Baldwin,

“I got fired just for listening to you.”

He also wrote a op-ed piece for the New York Times where he reminds us and the POTUS,

“He said it. ‘Grab ’em by the pussy.’

Of course he said it. And we laughed along, without a single doubt that this was hypothetical hot air from America’s highest-rated bloviator. Along with Donald Trump and me, there were seven other guys present on the bus at the time, and every single one of us assumed we were listening to a crass standup act. He was performing. Surely, we thought, none of this was real.

We now know better.”

“Kristin Anderson said that Mr. Trump reached under her skirt and ‘touched her vagina through her underwear’ while they were at a New York nightclub in the 1990s. That makes the “grab ’em by the pussy” routine real. I believe her.”

He says that Trump’s current “revisionist history” routine, saying that the voice on the tape is not his…

“This has hit a raw nerve in me.”

He says that he thought the idea of a Trump presidency was ridiculous and let us know on air.

“Ten years later, I did speak up. Soon after Mr. Trump declared his candidacy, I let it be known on “Access Hollywood Live” that I thought this was an absurd idea.

In the days, weeks and months to follow, I was highly critical of the idea of a Trump presidency. The man who once told me — ironically, in another off-camera conversation — after I called him out for inflating his ratings: “People will just believe you. You just tell them and they believe you,” was, I thought, not a good choice to lead our country.

I tried to conduct a serious interview with him as a candidate; each time I requested one I was turned down.”

He knows the part he played and recognizes this is a watershed moment.

“This moment in American life is no doubt painful for many women. It is especially painful for the women who have come forward, at the risk of forever being linked to one event, this man, this president of the United States. (I still can’t believe I just wrote that.)

To these women: I will never know the fear you felt or the frustration of being summarily dismissed and called a liar, but I do know a lot about the anguish of being inexorably linked to Donald Trump. You have my respect and admiration. You are culture warriors at the forefront of necessary change.

Today is about reckoning and reawakening, and I hope it reaches all the guys on the bus.”

And says that he is now in a better place as a person and a father.

“On a personal note, this last year has been an odyssey, the likes of which I hope to never face again: anger, anxiety, betrayal, humiliation, many selfish but, I hope, understandable emotions. But these have given way to light, both spiritual and intellectual. It’s been fortifying.

I know that I don’t need the accouterments of fame to know God and be happy. After everything over the last year, I think I’m a better man and father to my three teenage daughters — far from perfect, but better.”

Minister Causes Outrage After Asking People to “Pray in the Privacy of Their Hearts” for Prince George to be Gay

When his pic of a happy Prince George came out, some were suggesting that George would eventually too. This suggestion infuriated many in the LGBT community

A minister is getting a lot of attention after his blog post where he asked congregants to

“pray in the privacy of their hearts”

for Prince George to be gay.

Rev. Kelvin Holdsworth, who belongs to the Scottish Episcopal Church, wrote the post nearly two years ago. (A version was reposted on Jan. 27. of this year.) His words resurfaced on Twitter and in a number of media outlets after the 4-year-old’s uncle, Prince Harry, announced his engagement to Meghan Markle.

The post titled, How to change the Church of England, outlined Holdsworth’s take on how acceptance of same-sex marriage would be achieved. Though marriage equality was legalized in England and Wales in 2013, same-sex marriages are not recognized by the Church of England.

Holdsworth suggested that marriage equality advocates pray,

“for the Lord to bless Prince George with a love, when he grows up, of a fine young gentleman.

A royal wedding might sort things out remarkably easily, though we might have to wait 25 years for that to happen.”

Prince George is third in line to the throne, after his grandfather, Charles, Prince of Wales, and his Dad, Prince William.

The minister’s remarks have been condemned on social media. Gavin Ashenden, a former chaplain to Queen Elizabeth II and a Christian Episcopal Church missionary bishop, accused Holdsworth of using Prince George as “a gender-political football” among followers. Ashenden told the BBC,

“What is especially odd and incongruous is the fact that it is suddenly OK to pray for someone to be gay, but totally unacceptable to pray for them to be free from being gay and to resume a sexuality that was in tune with their biology.”

In a new December 1 blog post, Holdsworth apologized for the outrage he had ― however belatedly ― ignited, but said that his words had been misinterpreted.

“I could spend the next few weeks defending that post and keep reminding people what it was originally about. However, it seems to me that isn’t likely to be fruitful.

The issues about the church and its capacity to welcome same-sex couples who want to be married remain important. I’m not interested in continuing it through a conversation about Prince George. I would urge others, those who agree with me strongly and those who disagree with me strongly to turn our attentions to the actual matter at hand.”

The Film Posters of Richard Amsel: an Appreciation

amsel-hello-dolly

There are two 20th Century American illustrators that I have long admired the most: J.C.Leyendecker and Richard Amsel. The two artists lived and worked in different decades and their experiences are very different. Leyendecker was born in Germany in 1874 and he trained in Chicago and Paris, producing hundreds of works of enormous influence and popularity. He is most known now for his covers for The Saturday Evening Post and his iconic Arrow Collar advertisements. For his time, Leyendecker was able to be out of the closet and so was Amsel decades later.

Both artists enjoyed a close friendship and career rivalry with the great Norman Rockwell. Leyendecker was a truly great American illustrator with a career that spanned over half of the century. Amsel was great also. His work is evocative of earlier eras but infused with a modernist’s wit and self-conscious sense of style, but his career lasted just 15 years.

Leyendecker and Amsel both had careers at a very young age. When Leyendecker was studying at the Chicago Art Institute, his work was so mature that his professors felt that there was little to teach him. Amsel was already having real success while he was still a student at the Philadelphia College Of Art. In 1968, 20th Century Fox held a nationwide contest for a poster for their big Barbara Streisand vehicle, Hello, Dolly!. Amsel’s submission won and his career was jump-started at just 22-years-old.

Amsel had a wonderfully singular quality to his illustrative style. He could perfectly provoke nostalgia for a certain period. His posters for The Sting (1973) and McCabe And Mrs. Miller (1971) are now iconic. No matter the project all his graphics bear his instantly recognizable style. Not to mention his very cool signature:

His work pays affectionate tribute to the past, but his style is timeless and his attractive use of warm, glowing colors adds an even greater modernity to his evocations of times and styles from the past.

Amsel wrote:

“I’m interested in uncovering relationships between the past and the present, and in discovering how things have changed and grown. I don’t see any point in copying the past, but I think the elements of the past can be taken to another realm.”

A young singer/songwriter/accompanist/arranger named Barry Manilow, who was working with a new outrageous entertainer in cabaret clubs and piano bars, was drawn to Amsel’s work. Manilow introduced him to the new singer, and it was agreed that Amsel would do the cover art of her first album to be released on Atlantic Records. His cover for Bette Midler’s The Divine Miss M is now considered a classic.

In the crazy 1970s, Amsel continued doing album art, and he provided the posters for some of the most prestigious and popular films of the 1970’s: Chinatown (1974), Julia (1977), The Last Picture Show (1971), Murder On The Orient Express (1974), Nashville (1975), and The Shootist (1976) are just a few. In a nice through-line The Sting poster pays homage to Leyendecker.

For someone who left this world so young, Amsel’s career was certainly prolific. By the end of the 1970s, his film posters exceeded the creative output of all his contemporaries. But, Amsel was much more than just an artist who did movie posters.

His Time Magazine cover of Lily Tomlin is in the permanent collection at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C. Because of the industry’s tough deadlines, Amsel’s portrait of Tomlin was created in just two days.

amsel-lily

Amsel had a long association with TV Guide. In 1972, they commissioned a cover featuring the Duke and Duchess Of Windsor, for a story about a biopic about their fabled love affair. In the next decade he produced 37 published covers, a record Amsel holds to this day. Not unlike Leyendecker’s record for The Saturday Evening Post.

The Amsel covers are now c0nsidered collector’s items. Among his portraits are: Mary Tyler MooreJohn TravoltaElvis PresleyIngrid BergmanJohnny CarsonTom SelleckNancy ReaganFrank Sinatra, and Katharine Hepburn. Plus, Clark Gable and Vivian Leigh for television debut of Gone With The Wind (1939) and the 1981 wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana. Amsel’s portrait of Lucille Ball for the magazine’s July 6th, 1974 issue honoring the Ball’s retirement from series television is probably his most famous.

Amsel:

“I did not want the portrait to be of Lucy Ricardo. I wanted it to have the same timeless sense of glamour that Lucy herself has. She is, after all, a former Goldwyn Girl. I hoped to capture the essence of all this.”

The portrait impressed Ball so much that it was used in the opening credits of a two-hour television tribute, CBS Salutes Lucy: The First 25 Years (1976).

The 1980s brought a dramatic change to film marketing campaigns with photography favored over original art. Yet, Amsel somehow was able to receive commissions, his signature style was widely recognizable magazine covers and movie posters, including my favorite of his film pieces, the poster for Raiders Of The Lost Ark (1981).

amsel-raiders

Amsel’s artwork brought him many awards, from the New York and Los Angeles Society Of Illustrators, a Grammy Award, a Golden Key Award from The Hollywood Reporter, and the Philadelphia Art Director’s Association. The Academy Awards doesn’t give Oscars for posters, but if they did Amsel would be the Meryl Streep of graphic artists.

Lauren Bacall, details from one sheets for “Murder On The Orient Express” (1974) and “The Shootist” (1976).

His last film poster was for Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome, the third of George Miller’s apocalyptic action films starring crazy antisemitic Mel Gibson. His final completed artwork was for a November 1985 issue of TV Guide, featuring news anchors Tom BrokawPeter Jennings and Dan Rather. He was gone than three weeks later.  He was diagnosed with HIV in September and 11 weeks late the plague got him. He was just 37-years-old

His obituary in Variety was callously brief:

“…illustrator for numerous Hollywood film print campaigns as well as portrait artist for many TV Guide covers, he died November 17 in New York of pneumonia, it has been learned.”

There were no tributes, no eulogies, no sweet reflections. I thought a lot about him when I went searching for that original Bette Midler graphic which was all over Boston as a poster in the autumn of 1972. It has never failed to fill me with wonder and bring me back to that time, those crazy, sexy 1970s. At last, Amsel, Illustrator Of The Lost Art, a new documentary film by Adam McDaniel with narration by Bruce Vilanch, is slated to open in early 2018.

Transgender artist, advocate and performance poet Linda LaBeija expresses what dating/meeting men was like when she first began her transition, on latest spoken word piece SKINS. The piece. produced by Skyshaker (FUTUREHOOD) is layered, vacillating between LaBeija’s struggle with desire, feelings of unworthiness, and the incessant repeating of bad choices- when being with the wrong person seems to be better than being alone. Stream SKINS below, and check out the full interview at The Fader. (Pic by Bianca Townsend)

Linda LaBeija:

SKINS was inspired by the harsh realities I faced in my dating life when first beginning my transition. The more feminine I presented, the more I was solicited for sex randomly in the street. I also seemed to attract men that led very complex lives. Either they were “closeted” and did not want anyone to know that they enjoyed engaging in sex with trans women or they were heavy drug users, mentally ill, homeless, disabled, or just interested in the fetish women like me are perceived to be. Regardless, mutual attraction became a rarity after transitioning.”
