Bette Midler Claims Geraldo Rivera Groped Her in the 1970s!

Rivera, via YouTube

Geraldo Rivera defended Matt Lauer and called news “a flirty business”. He’d know. A 1991 interview has resurfaced in which Bette Midler told Barbara Walters that Rivera groped her.

Rivera’s had a series of tweets yesterday where he said he felt sadness for Lauer, who was abruptly fired from the Today Show after being accused of sexual misconduct in the workplace.

Rivera said that Lauer is a gentleman and expressed concern that the “epidemic” of sexual harassment allegations against powerful men in media and entertainment is “criminalizing courtship and conflating it with predation”. His tweet:

Sad about @MLauer great guy, highly skilled & empathetic w guests & a real gentleman to my family & me. News is a flirty business & it seems like current epidemic of #SexHarassmentAllegations may be criminalizing courtship & conflating it w predation. What about #GarrisonKeillor?

Geraldo Rivera (@GeraldoRivera) November 29, 2017

Rivera then said that allegation should never be used by women to “get even with bad bosses or hated exes”. He also said that allegations should be made in a “timely fashion”.

Photo via YouTube

In that 1991 Bette Midler interview, it shows the Gay Icon addressing Rivera’s claim that the two had a sexual encounter. In his memoir, creatively titled Exposing Myself (1991), Rivera writes that going into his interview with Midler in the 1970s:

“We were in the bathroom, preparing for the interview, and at some point, I put my hands on her breasts…”

Midler offered a different version to Walters, emphasizing that the encounter was not consensual. Midler:

“Geraldo and his producer came to do an interview with me, in the ’70s. And this was when he was very, sort of, hot. And he and his producer left the crew in the other room, they pushed me into my bathroom, they broke two poppers and pushed them under my nose and proceeded to grope me. I did not offer myself up on the altar of Geraldo Rivera. He was… he was unseemly.”

Midler’s accusation didn’t really register with the press at the time because, unlike our era, one star accusing another star of sexual misconduct was not taken as seriously at the time.

Rivera wrote that he had lots of sex in 1970s:

“With all the private people, their names were either changed or they were used with their permission. With the public people, like Bette Midler and Margaret Trudeau and Marian Javits, they live their lives on the public stage, and much worse things have been written about them. I don’t think it’s that slanderous a statement to say that somebody made love to me 15 years ago.”

Rivera tried to walk back on his tweets today and issued an apology of sorts, saying that sexual harassment is a “horrendous problem long hidden. Harassers deviants who deserve what is coming to them.”

Midler continues in her Tony Award-winning role as Dolly Levi in Hello, Dolly! on Broadway until January 14th, when another Gay Icon, Bernadette Peters puts her spin on the role.

#RIP: Actor / Singer, Jim Nabors

As Gomer Pyle, via YouTube

James Thurston Nabors has taken his final bow, passing today after spending more than 60 years in showbiz. Jim Nabors became a star playing the clumsy deputy sheriff Gomer Pyle on The Andy Griffith Show (1960-68) and eventually starred in his own spin-off.  He died peacefully at home in Hawaii by his husband by his side. Nabors’ health had been declining for the past year. His immune system was suppressed after he underwent a liver transplant about 20 years ago.

He squandered some of considerable intelligence, talent and beautiful baritone singing voice to play a hillbilly, but America loved him for it.

Nabors denied his gayness for the sake of his career, even partying with Ronald and Nancy Reagan. He was a Republican, but I forgive him easily, it was a different era of the GOP. Nabors lived in an era when being gay and being a star were hardly compatible and rumors could ruin a career.

I like that his story was a happy one and that Nabors finally found love and became an out and proud gay man.

In early January 2013, with just a simple exchange of rings in front of a judge in a Seattle hotel room, Nabors married Stan Cadwallader, his partner of 38 years. Nabors met Cadwallader, a former firefighter in Honolulu, in 1975. It was Cadwallader who announced the passing of his husband.

Nabors:

”We had no rights as a couple before we were married, yet when you’ve been together 38 years, I think something’s got to happen there, you’ve got to solidify something, and at my age, it’s probably the best thing to do.”

Nabors was born and raised in Sylacauga, Alabama. He originated the character of the hapless but lovable gas-station attendant Gomer Pyle on The Andy Griffith Show and reprised the role in five seasons of Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. on which his goofball character was perpetually making trouble for his military superiors, but not for being gay. He was a big television star back in a time when he would never tell even if he was asked. I always felt Gomer was just going through the motions with Lou-Ann Poovie on the series. His character’s famous catchphrases: ”Sur-prise, sur-prise, sur-prise”, ”Shame, shame, shame”, ”Shazam!”  and ”Goll-ll-y!” became part of the lexicon of the 1960s and 1970s.

My insider sources tell me that Nabors was extremely popular in the industry and the ultimate professional on the set. Funny and versatile as a comic actor, he was a regular guest on The Carol Burnett Show (Nabors and Burnett had a comedy act together at the start of their careers), The Dean Martin Show, The Muppet Show, and he even had his own CBS variety series, The Jim Nabors Hour (1969-71).

With Burnett, via YouTube

Nabors had always been open about his gayness to his co-workers in showbiz; his was an open secret in Hollywood. He claimed that he never wished to get involved in the national debate over Gay Rights. Nabors:

”I haven’t ever made a public spectacle of it. Well, I’ve known since I was a child, so, come on. It’s not that kind of a thing. I’ve never made a huge secret of it at all.”

We all giggled and smirked through that urban legend in the 1970s that had spread suggesting that Nabors and Rock Hudson were married and had a ceremony at Roddy McDowall’s place, and that Hudson was going to change his last name to that of Nabors’ famous television character, making him Rock Pyle. The cruelty of the rumor ended the friendship between the two entertainers, never being able to be seen together in public again. The tale was part of that homophobic mindset that any two gay men could never resist having sex together. Yet, as a youth, I laughed along with my friends.

In 2016, via YouTube

The happy Nabors-Cadwalladers lived together in Hawaii. The couple had a macadamia nut farm in Maui, plus homes in Los Angeles and Montana.

Nabors was 87-years-old when he left this world.

Deck The Halls With Holly… Woodlawn! Snatch Up The Andy Warhol Superstars Pictures HERE

It’s your chance to get a very special gift this holiday season from Holly Woodlawn!

Iconic images of Warhol superstar Holly Woodlawn from the early 1970s are now available for purchase for a limited time from her niece. These black and white photos were printed in the 90’s on museum quality heavy paper and were taken by Jarry Lang, a well known celebrity photographer in NYC and a dear friend of Andy Warhol.

Holly has signed each one of the pictures in pencil. If only it had been a red sharpie! Holly kept telling her niece to save these for the release of her documentary, even in the last weeks of her life she told her this. However, with the current political climate taking place, her niece can just hear her voice saying “sell them now, Cookie!”

By purchasing these signed prints of Holly you will be able to fulfill Holly Woodlawn’s OTHER last wish… to help support the homeless in the LGBT community.

These signed prints are currently available on Etsy  for anywhere from $100 – $1200 (insured with free shipping in the USA!) and 25% of the profit from each print goes to the LGBT community.

How? They will be split between The Los Angeles LGBT Center and The Ali Forney Center NYC AKA two of Holly’s favorite cities!

The remaining profit will go towards supporting a museum and gallery exhibit currently being curated showcasing amazing original photographs of Holly and Jackie Curtis.

There is no greater time in recent history to support the LGBT community. Together we can all do some good in memory of one of the first transgender trail blazers, Holly Woodlawn!

Dame Edna Everage is a housewife/superstar, and before her retirement, she was one of the most formidable comic creations the world has ever known. A dedicated Dadaist, with her diamonté harlequin glasses, mauve wig, and her size-eleven heels, she gave us courage, and in her very real way, she was courageous.

Dame Edna is that rarest thing in our time, an absolute absurdist and an inspired personification of caprice. She may have retired, but Dame Edna will never leave my heart. I love her. I miss her.

#WorldAidsDay: A Remembrance of Those Taken by the Plague

AIDS is a disease of the immune system caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The majority of people with the virus don’t know they have it. The disease is devastating Africa. The continent is home to about 14.5% of the world’s population and 72% of all AIDS deaths.

In 1969, an American teenager from Missouri named Robert R. became the earliest confirmed victim of AIDS. It remains unclear how Robert got the virus. A woman named Kimberly Bergalis was the first person to get HIV from a clinical transmission. She received the virus from her dentist.

Since the beginning of the plague, more than 70 million people have been infected with the HIV and about 35 million people have died of HIV.

Globally, 40 million people are living with HIV. More than 1.1 million people in the USA are living with HIV today, and one in seven of them don’t know it.

An estimated 37,600 Americans became newly infected with HIV in 2016.

From 2008 to 2016, the estimated number of annual HIV infections in the U.S. declined 18%.

Gay and bisexual men, particularly young African American gay and bisexual men, are most affected.

Southern states bear the greatest burden of HIV, accounting for 50% of new infections in 2016.

It is mostly considered to be a manageable medical condition in our own time, but in the USA, 6,721 people died from HIV and AIDS last year.

Worldwide, an estimated one million people died from HIV-related illnesses in 2016.

Since the spread of HIV, hundreds of famous people have died from the disease. Except for Ryan White, the young activist that changed the public’s perception of HIV, everyone on this list had an established and notable career before getting HIV. It is an incomplete list. There is no particular order.

Please add the names of anyone I left out, plus your own friends, lovers and comrades, in the comments on World Of Wonder’s Facebook page. Let’s never forget.

World AIDS Day is commemorated each year on the 1st of December and is an opportunity for every community to unite in the fight against HIV, show support for people living with HIV and remember those who have passed away.

In Britain, Prince Harry and the actor Meghan Markle lent their support to a World Aids Day charity fair. Attending their first public event as an engaged couple, they were shown one of 48 UK Aids Memorial Quilts.

In France, President Emmanuel Macron took an HIV test a visit at the Delafontaine Hospital in Saint-Denis, near Paris.

In Washington DC, POTUS issued a statement marking the date. But in a break with tradition, Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, out vulgarians president did not mention the specific minorities who were disproportionately affected by the plague in his proclamation.

Mariah Carey, DJ Khaled and Mario Lopez performed in the 30th anniversary concert for World Aids Day in LA.

Jay Z Admits to Cheating on Beyonce (But We ALL Knew Already)

Y’all, can we give Beyonce an award for most resilient beacon of hope already?

Queen Bey gave America hope after the election with the top Instagram of 2016 announcing her pregnancy (WE NEEDED A WIN, OKAY!) knocking Selena Gomez off her throne.

She aired out her dirty laundry on Lemonade by calling out hubby Jay Z for hooking up with a basic Becky.

Jay Z released 4:44 but FINALLY he admitted to cheating on the queen in a recent interview with T Magazine.

“When you go into survival mode what happen? You shut down all emotions,” he explained, “So even with women, you gonna shut down emotionally, so you can’t connect….In my case, like it’s, it’s deep. And then all the things happen from there: infidelity.”

Jay Z explains that the coupled used their music as a therapy session, working on both of their albums and a collaboration to sort through their issues. Clearly, Beyonce was angry to release dynamo album Lemonade before any of the others.

[It was] very, very uncomfortable…but the best place is right in the middle of the pain,” he explained. “And it was uncomfortable. And we had a lot of conversations. [I was] really proud of the music she made, and she was really proud of the art I released. At the end of the day we really have a healthy respect for one another’s craft…you know, most people walk away, and like divorce rate is like 50 percent or something ’cause most people can’t see themselves. The hardest thing is seeing pain on someone’s face that you caused, and then have to deal with yourself.”

Confronting their issues head on is admirable. Thank you Bey/Jay for bringing hope to couples everywhere.

#WTF!?: Trump’s National Xmas Tree Lighting Draws the BIGGEST CROWD IN HISTORY!? (Yeah, No.)

Yesterday, November 30, POTUS Tweeted, that he had: “been looking very much forward to this day ALL YEAR LONG”. Was he referring to a back rub from Hope Hicks? A triple scoop of ice cream? Had his gift from Vladimir arrived?

Nope, it was The National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony. Last year President Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, and daughter Sasha, sang with Santa Claus to a packed crowd. This year, the crowd was a little sparse.

2016, NPS Photo by Marcey Frutchey

2016, NPS Photo by Marcey Frutchey

The event is traditionally sold out, tickets are available only through a Park Service lottery, and according to my sources, it is always exciting to attend. Except, not so much, this year. In fact, the White House Tree Lighting Ceremony was a bit of dud, playing to a tiny crowd.

In the early evening, the president and his charming family gathered at the Ellipse, in th 52-acre  President’s Park located just south of the White House fence, for the tradition of lighting the National Christmas Tree. The president was introduced by Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, who called POTUS:

“A man who loves our parks, loves our military, and loves our country. The man who brought ‘Merry Christmas’ back to our nation’s capital. Yes, you did, sir!”

At dusk, the president counted down from 10 while the First Lady, looking gorgeously icy in her red coat from Karl Lagerfeld’s Complicit Line , mouthed the numbers in Slovene before hitting the button that lit up the enormous Colorado Blue Spruce tree.

Dean Caine, Kathie Lee, and You-Know-Who, Photo by Manuel Balce Ceneta, via YouTube

Speaking from behind a bullet-proof glass enclosure, the president bragged about the mild weather and compared himself to President Ulysses S. Grant, who signed legislation making Christmas a federal holiday. “I sort of feel we’re doing that again”, he said to an audience made up mostly of his family members.

The president made a short speech, sticking to the teleprompter, where he wished “America and the world a very Merry Christmas”. POTUS posted videos to Twitter after the ceremony, where a crowd can be heard cheering as he tells the story of the birth of Jesus Christ, as Melania tries to sneak away.

POTUS:

“We want to wish everybody a Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year, have unbelievable holidays, and we are now going to light a very beautiful tree.”

Despite his enthusiasm, what the president tweeted was Fake News. The fact was, the place was basically empty, except for Ivanka and a worried Jared Kushner with their children, Don Jr., and Tiffany!

Usually, the National Christmas Tree Lighting is standing room only, according to the National Park Service, which hosts the ceremony. The NPS website says:  “The 95-year old tradition is one of the most beloved holiday events in Washington DC.”  In fact, it has become such a big event, that last year, the packed ceremony included Chance the Rapper, James Taylor, Kelly Clarkson, The Lumineers, and Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood. The event was packed with celebrities and it featured President Obama singing Jingle Bells with Santa Claus (Joe Biden). The tree was lit, and so was the ceremony.

But this year, the chairs were less than half-filled, with most of the attendees gathered around the stage. White Nationalist favorites Kathie Lee Gifford and Dean Cain hosted while Wynonna and something called The Texas Tenors entertained the tens of people who gathered.

If you were not there, do not fret, the whole extravaganza will be aired on The Hallmark Channel on Monday, December 4th at 7pm.

POTUS (not satire):

“With Trump as your president, we are going to be celebrating Merry Christmas again, and it’s going to be done with a big, beautiful tax cut!”

On World AIDS Day, Trump Manages To Completely Ignore the LGBT Community

$

Today was World AIDS Day and Trump and his White House appears to have forgotten the LGBT community, which is disproportionately affected by the disease.

More than 1.1 million people in the U.S. are living with HIV, being particularly prevalent in the LGBT community.

55 % of living with HIV are gay men and one in six gay and bisexual men will be diagnosed with HIV in their lifetime, according to the Human Rights Campaign.

Trump did not mention the LGBT community, but rather focused on southern African countries, where millions also battle HIV.

On this day, we pray for all those living with HIV, and those who have lost loved ones to AIDS. We remain deeply committed to supporting adolescent girls and young women through this program, who are up to 14 times more likely to contract HIV than young men in some sub-Saharan African countries.

But he is is not the only president to overlook the community. Presidents George W. Bush and George H.W. Bush didn’t directly acknowledge gay Americans in their World AIDS Day speeches either. Both Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama did.

In 2016, Obama said,

Gay and bisexual men, transgender people, youth, black and Latino Americans, people living in the Southern United States, and people who inject drugs are at a disproportionate risk. People living with HIV can face stigma and discrimination, creating barriers to prevention and treatment services.

In 1993, Clinton said,

Volunteers across America, members of local service organizations, church groups, gay and lesbian service organizations, and thousands of individuals have heard the summons to action and have given selflessly of their time and energy.

Obama appeared in a video on Jimmy Kimmel Live to encourage people to support life-saving medication and relief efforts, joking that he would

share our files on the aliens” or allow people to pilot Air Force One if they helped.

Obama said,

“When we reject cynicism and pessimism in favor of a relentless optimism that says however long it takes and however lonely the fight, each of us can make a difference. That’s what I believe.”

December 1, 1955Rosa Parks is Arrested for Civil Disobedience

“The only tired I was, was tired of giving in.”

Rosa Parks stood up for what she believed, actually she sat down for what she believed, but you get it. On the evening of December 1, 1955, Parks, an African-American, chose to take a seat on the bus for her ride home after work as a tailor’s assistant. She refused to give up her seat to a white male passenger and she was arrested for disobeying an Alabama law requiring black people to relinquish seats to white people when the bus was full. Blacks also had to sit at the back of the bus.

Park’s arrest began a 381 day boycott of the Montgomery bus system. It also led to a 1956 SCOTUS decision banning segregation on public transportation.

Parks was active in the Montgomery Chapter of the National Association For The Advancement Of Colored People (NAACP). She served as the chapter’s secretary. Denied the right to vote on at least two occasions because she was a negro, Parks also worked with the Voters League to help African-American citizens to register to vote.

Parks’ arrest was followed by a bus boycott on her court date. To successfully challenge segregated public transport, however, the NAACP knew it needed continued action. The brand-new pastor at Dexter Avenue Baptist Church took on the role of leader for the boycott. His name was Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. King. He insisted on nonviolent action to achieve the goal of justice. He said: “We must use the weapon of love”.

In December 1956, the Supreme Court banned segregation on public transportation, and the boycott ended over a year after it had begun. Rosa Parks is now known as the “Mother Of The Civil Rights Movement”.

We honor her by naming stuff for her. About a decade ago, there was a campaign to name a street for Parks here in Portland, one of the whitest cities in the USA. The powers that decide this sort of thing chose Portland Boulevard for the name change. It is in walking distance of my home. There is an extraordinary, hidden gem of a rose park at nearby Peninsula Park. I had vigorously advocated to name it: THE ROSA PARKS’ ROSE PARK, but no one was buying it. I thought it was so much nicer than naming a busy thoroughfare for her. But, no one cares what I think.

Given the situation, would you have done what Rosa Parks did?

Inspiring Women for the Top of Your Christmas Tree!

Instead of the tradition angel to sit on top of your Christmas tree this year, why not go for on an inspirational alternative by honoring one of three inspiring women: Beyoncé, Serena Williams or Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Sold by Women To Look Up To, they’re presented in beautiful boxes, with a simple but strong ribbon.

Women To Look Up To is a non-profit that aims to shine a light on modern female role models, famous or working behind the scenes to further women’s position within society. From their website: “We act to inspire, motivate, and lift each other up in a joyous way.”

The organization also offers Christmas cards featuring Clinton, Beyoncé, and Williams; plus Adele, Michelle Obama, and Angelina Jolie.

They use a unique 3D printing process that allows the artisans to then carve the women out of plaster. The sculpting of these figures means every version is unique, like a first edition. The sculpting process takes around 12 hours, then an artist finishes his each one, sparing no detail or quality, and taking up to a week to complete.

Even with a misogynist president, 2017 has shaped up to be the Year Of The Woman. Why not have one atop your Christmas tree?

December 2, 1946– Gianni Versace

Donatella Versace, as portrayed by Penelope Cruz, in FX’s The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story:

“I will not allow that man, that nobody, to kill my brother twice!”

For American Crime Story’s Season Two, Ryan Murphy’s series examines the murder in 1997 of Italian fashion designer Gianni Versace, played by hottie Edgar Ramirez. Ricky Martin plays Versace’s partner, Antonio D’Amico. Versace was murdered by spree killer Andrew Cunanan (played by Glee’s Darren Criss). Cunanan killed four people prior to Versace and then committed suicide eight days after killing Versace.

The trailer depicts Versace’s opulent and glamorous lifestyle, contrasted against Cunanan’s movements before he meets Versace.

Criss as Cunanan:

“This world has wasted me, and yet this world also made you, Mr. Versace, into a star. You’re not better than me. We’re the same. The only difference is that you got lucky.”

In real life, Versace was a vulgarian and a genius. His uncompromisingly glitzy designs were made to turn men into hot studs and women into objects of desire.

His chief rival, Georgio Armani, whose work is the very essence of understatement, accused Versace of turning fashion into “a porno show”.  Versace’s reply: “Armani is a bore”.

Versace dressed his friends Elton John, Joan Collins, Ivana Trump, Madonna, Prince, Cher, and Elizabeth Taylor. I have never understood how a designer with so little affinity for ordinary people could enjoy success on such a grand scale. 27-years ago, his fall 1995 collection featured a $1,750 silk shirt, a $7,000 evening gown and an $800 gold-studded belt.

Versace insisted that the cost of his clothing was beside the point. He believed in a sort of fashion trickle-down economy, with his designs influencing street looks. But, I think maybe the secret to his success was seducing the bourgeoisie by insulting it.

Versace was a master of hype. Whenever I would open my new copy of Vanity Fair, the first 30 pages would be Versace ads. He projected an image of his customer as free-thinking and fearless.

In 1992, Versace opened his first retail store in London in a former bank. His team transformed the place into a neo-classical palazzo, with marble floors and staircases, and priceless antique furniture imported from Italy. Italian craftspeople were brought in to do gilding and hand-paint the stucco ceilings. The shop had bathrooms made of marble with gold fixtures. No wonder Ivana loved him.

Versace lived the life that his designs represented. He lived in a former convent filled with priceless antiques in Milan, a 18th century villa on Lake Como that doubled as his design studio, and an opulent mansion on Ocean Drive, Miami.

Versace was born in Reggio, in the Calabria region, where his mother was a dressmaker who owned a small boutique. Versace:

“I was born and raised amidst dresses, and everything I know about fashion I owe to my mother.”

As a boy he was obsessed by design. When he turned 18-years-old, he began to work for his mother as a buyer, attending fashion shows in Florence, Rome, Paris and London.

At 22-years-old, Versace began producing his own clothing designs made by a manufacturer in Milan. In 1978, he brought out a collection of women’s ready-to-wear clothes under his own name and later that year showed his first men’s collection with a theme of ”Disciplined Masculine Negligence”.

Versace was very influenced by the clean look of military uniforms, clothing that included epaulets and raised piping on the trousers. In 1982, inspired by the London punk scene, he took the military theme farther by creating woven metal mesh dresses. He developed a technique that bonded leather to rubber without stitching or seams by using a laser.

“Were it possible to make plastic clothes. I’d be the first to do it.”

Versace was not an expert draftsman. He would hand off his sketches to his team of designers to flesh out. He was not all that popular with the design establishment who found his work vulgar and too “pop”. Versace’s persistence and personality prevailed. Beginning in 1982, he created sensations with his costumes for operas and ballets for the world’s major companies.

”My experience at La Scala has helped me a lot in finding a new attitude to give my clothes.”

In the 1990s his designs showed daring contrasts: black leather appliqued with velvet; grey flannel doubled with shiny silk. Again, the critics called his work vulgar, but high society was buying it and the street was imitating his looks.

By the mid-1990s, Versace was selling clothing for men and women, plus jewelry and accessories, at the 138 Versace Emporiums from Tokyo to Miami. He unabashedly borrowed the styles from the world of S/M and gay leather bars. Again, the critics complained, and rich people purchased.

His brother Santo took care of the business side of the company and his little sister Donatella served as a muse, wearing his tight-fitting dresses and spiked heels.

Versace was one the first Italian designers to fully come out of the closet. He met his partner Antonio D’Amico in 1982. As a couple, they were regulars on the Jet Set party scene. D’Amico was a model when they met, but later he became a designer in Versace’s company. They hung out with Elton John, Princess Diana and Madonna.

Versace was noted for entertaining his famous friends in style, especially at the Miami mansion on Ocean Drive. The three-story Spanish style house was the center of the international party circuit, although it was removed from the hotels on the landmark Art Deco strip.

On the morning of July 15, 1997, Versace returned to Ocean Drive after having gone for a walk to get coffee and the paper, a chore usually designated to an assistant, but on this lovely day the designer decided to enjoy the air and sunshine. He was unlocking the gate to his villa when a stranger walked up behind him and shot him twice in the back of his head.

Speculation over whether the killing was a mob hit gave way to the real possibility that Versace was just one more victim of the 27-year-old, gay California party boy serial killer, Cunanan. By the time he was in Miami, Cunanan was already the subject of an FBI nationwide manhunt, after he had killed two of his former boyfriends, and tortured and murdered two total strangers.

In Italy, the news brought disbelief and concern. Santo Versace had recently been convicted of bribery. In 1995, luxury designer Maurizio Gucci, had been shot dead outside his office in Milan. There were rumors that the Versace Company had Mafia connections. The Italian press noted that the shots to the back of Versace’s head were typical of a mob hit.

But indeed, Versace’s murderer was Cunanan. He shot himself in the head after being cornered by police in a houseboat a few miles from the murder scene a week later. The gun he used was the same one he used to murder Versace.

More than 2000 friends and colleagues attended the memorial service at Milan’s Gothic Cathedral, including Armani, Carla Bruni, Karl Lagerfeld, Naomi Campbell, Sting, Carolyn Bessette and her husband John Kennedy, plus Italian Olympic ski star Alberto Tomba. Sir Elton and Princess Diana comforted each other in the front row of the Cathedral. So sad, John would be mourning Diana herself, only six weeks later.

The Versace siblings got the company, but he had left the bulk of his estate to his niece, Allegra Versace. When she turned 18-years-old in 2004, Allegra received her share which was worth around 500 million dollars. She had no interest in fashion design or business. The running of the company has continued under her mother Donatella’s direction. Versace left D’Amico a pension of 50 million Lire ($35,000) a month for life, plus the right to live in any of his houses. The Miami house sold for 49 million in 2009 and is now The Villa At Casa Casuarina, a luxury hotel and restaurant, with suites that go for just $5000 a night.

”I am not interested in the past, except as the road to the future.”
