#RealEstatePorn: Lucky Peeps Picked Up Some Bargains (& Herstory) at Grey Gardens’ Yard Sale

You know Grey Gardens, right? It was the home of Jackie Onassis‘ relatives, Big Edie and Little Edie Beale, icons of the infamous 1975 documentary, Grey Gardens, the inspiration for the Broadway musical, of the same name and the HBO movie starring Drew Barrymore & Jessica Lange, not to mention, a featured guest-spot on RuPaul‘s Snatch Game, played by Jinkx Monsoon!

Later it was the estate of former Washington Post executive editor, the late Ben Bradlee (who broke open Watergate and his wife, Sally Quinn.

The 1.7-acre East Hampton, estate sold for in the neighborhood of $18 million last year was now the scene of a buzzing estate sale. (Quinn and Bradlee bought the estate in 1979 for $220,000 from Little Edie.) Susan Wexler, whose Bridgehampton company Behind the Hedgerows is managing the sale.

People started lining up around 4 AM and were admitted 40 at a time, so when the doors opened a few minutes before 10 a.m., the crowd of Hamptonites rushed in in a civilized stampede, all wearing in blue, hospital-style booties issued to keep the place clean.

Wexler joked,

They came in here like locusts. But pretty orderly! There’s a good deal of original stuff, plus a lot of possessions from Sally and Ben, too.

Wexler priced everything to move, at $1 to $795. On offer?

• drinking glasses, $2
• mens hats, $2 each
• a pile of home phones, $5 each
• cloth napkins, $6
• Xbox, $25
• frayed pillows bordered in lace, $45-$75 each
• convertible sofa, $225
• wicker furniture found in the attic from the Beale’s
• silver handheld mirror from the ’75 documentary
• Bradlee’s rolltop desk, $675

Alex Rosenfield, an attorney from New York City bought a $495 chair owned by the Beales. It bore the claw marks of their many cats and Rosenfield, who frequents East Hampton, was unsure where he might keep it. He described his purchase as “sort of impulsive” and said he initially sought to attend the sale to

just kind of see the house. It’s beautiful.

Drew James and Lisa Bettencourt drove from New York City on Thursday evening, and both described themselves as enormous fans of the documentary. James, who had cleared his schedule to attend the sale. Neither were on the hunt for anything in particular:

I want to lick the walls, touch the floor!

I just want a tchotchke from Grey Gardens.“

By the afternoon, the sale had been nearly picked clean as shoppers carried rolls of wallpaper, trinkets and linens to the lengthy cash register line. But despite the high volume of sales, enough items were left over that the event will continue on through the weekend as planned.

#Nontroversy?: New Photos From Al Franken & Leeann Tweeden’s USO Tour That Speak for Themselves…

More photos are emerging from the USO Tour that Leeann Tweeden and Al Franken were on.

One pic seems to show her gleefully grabbing the guitarist’s butt and another she is sitting happily next to Franken on the flight where he mock-assualted her in a photo. The last photo shows the the two kissing onstage either during a rehearsal or during the actual show. (The guys behind her look like they might be doing tech, but maybe not in front of an audience…) She isn’t alone with Franken and someone took this picture.

I’m not defending Franken, who has already apologized for his behavior. (Tweeden accepted it.) What do you think? Should Franken be lumped in with Spacey, Weinstein and Moore as a sexual predator?

Miss Coco Peru is on yet another shopping trip this time to Walgreen’s in search of sweet Jesus candy canes.

But first she has to drive there, get gas and be distracted as only she can. We’ll tag along shopping with her ANY DAY.

Watch.

She also hauls it over to Walmart for a Wonder Woman crock pot but is not impressed,

This has been a real disappointment. I may have to go home and write a letter.

#RIP: Designer, Azzedine Alaia

Azzedine Alaia, the French-Tunisian designer known as “the king of cling” has died. The French Federation of Haute Couture and Fashion confirmed today.

In his more than four decades in the fashion industry, Alaia gained a reputation for being a rogue. He refused to follow the calendar of international fashion weeks and released his collections only when he was ready. Alaia said in a 2013 interview,

I like women. I never think about doing new things, about being creative, but about making clothing that will make women beautiful.

Some of the biggest stars of the 80s and 90s, like Madonna, Tina Turner (below) and supermodel, Naomi Campbell, who was one of his protégées and muses who referred to him as “Papa”, loved the clothes and the man.

As he updated those designs, his cohort of celebrity fans grew to include Lady Gaga and First Lady Michelle Obama.

Alaia studied sculpture at an Ecole des Beau Arts in Tunis and there he developed his keen eye for the human form. He relocated to Paris in 1957 and during those early years, he worked first at Christian Dior, then Guy Larouche and later Thierry Mugler.

By his first collection in 1979, he was recognized as a rising fashion star.

After his passing was announced, Victoria Beckham called him “a true master” and one of her “biggest inspirations.”

Jean-Paul Goude, who was friends with Alaia since the early ’80s, described him in a 2010 New York Times interview as

“Very, very introverted. In a way, I find him calculated, and I don’t mean that in a bad way. He knows exactly what he’s doing. The silences are on purpose. He doesn’t want people to know too much.

In the 1995 comedy Clueless, popular Beverly Hills teen, Cher, opposes a robber’s demand to hit the pavement, saying her red dress,

Is an Alaia… it’s like a totally important designer.

Azzedine Alaia was 77.

#QueerQuote: “Macho does not prove mucho.”- Zsa Zsa Gabor

Zsa Zsa Gabor (1917-2016) pioneered the modern version of celebrity: she was famous for being famous.

Gabor became a frequent guest on television talk shows as early as the 1950s, charming audiences with her fractured English and risque jokes about her reputation as an oft-married seductress fond of men and money.

Her nine marriages and reputation for shaving years off her age made her a pop-culture punch line. Bob Hope could joke: “You can calculate Zsa Zsa Gabor’s age by the rings on her fingers”, and it only cemented her fame.

She had penchant for public escapades including a 1989 assault conviction for slapping a Beverly Hills police officer. When reporters asked if she was prepared for a long trial, she cooed: “I have enough outfits to last a year”.

Zsa Zsa left this world in December 2016. She was 99-years-old when she checked-out for good.

Kimiko Nishimoto is an 89-year-old Japanese grandma who’s been shooting and editing her own pictures since she was just a kid of 72.

She didn’t get into photography until late in life. Her son was teaching a beginner’s course and so she enrolled and got the selfie bug. (I know, technically, these may not be selfies, as it looks like she might have some assistance snapping the shutter, but they are self-portraits nonetheless. But you can see the self-timing clicker in her hand in some of the shots.)

She had her first solo exhibition in 2000, at a local museum in her home town of Kumamoto, and now she’s about to have her work exhibited at Tokyo’s Epson gallery. The show is titled Asobokane, which means “let’s play”

The exhibition will feature previously unseen work from the octogenarian artist, from December 15 – January 18, 2018.

#WTF!?: Kid Destroys $1300 Worth of Makeup at Sephora –Twitter Comes For the Mom!

At a Sephora in Augusta, Georgia it seems that someone’s kid made the Makeup Forever eyeshadow palette display into a Makeup Doomsday!

Make-up artist Brittany Nelson posted this after she saw the horror of it all,

“$1300 of Make Up Forever eye shadow destroyed at Sephora tonight due to a small child. I’m sure he/she thought they were like finger paints and had no idea how naughty they were being. Tons of destroyed product and pissed Sephora cast members are a not a happy place to be.

Mammas, please shop for your makeup 💄 without your tiny humans. It’s not fun for you…or them…or the expensive product. Anna Heath and I about passed out when we saw this atrocity. Being me, I’ve needed to bring Allie into many makeup stores as she’s grown and had a strict ‘hands in pockets’ rule for her and a strict 10-minute rule for me.

It was very helpful so if you must take your kiddos makeup shopping I suggest trying it.
This massive demolished palette makes me 😞. Makeup should always make me 😊.

*It looked 100X worse in real life and I don’t work for Sephora. I was just walking in as the mom/kid were hustling out of there.”

The internet let the Mom have it, but wonder if she ever got the message?

#RIP: Drag Legend, Flawless Sabrina

Wednesday, November 22nd, Club Cummming in NYC will be screening “The Queen” to honor the loss of Mother Flawless Sabrina. 6:30PM. FREE.

Drag lost another legend with the death of Mother Flawless Sabrina Friday night. Born Jack Doroshow in Philadelphia in 1939, she helped transform drag into an art form that celebrated queer identity.

She told Out in 2015,

We would take hotels, usually in the black section of town, and rent out the ballrooms. We would hang sheets as a canopy outside so people could get in and out of the building without being seen, even though they were in suits and ties when they came in.

Cross-dressing was still a felony, and she was arrested dozens of times. Sabrina also faced arrest for promoting her 1967 film The Queen, in Times Square. A semi-documentary, the movie recounted the Miss All America Beauty Pageant, where Sabrina played “Mother” to the contestants, including a young Crystal LaBeija.

The Queen screened at Cannes and landed Sabrina spots on several TV talk shows. It was the first drag documentary. Sabrina was photographed by Diane Arbus and, in 1972, had a cameo in John WatersPink Flamingos.

She told trans activist and artist Zackary Drucker as part of the for the 2014 Whitney Biennial, where Sabrina held tarot card readings in her Upper East Side apartment,

It took me a very long time in my life to get over being angry all the time. I mean, really angry. It not only seemed illogical; it was also so unkind. I didn’t go around pointing my finger at people, telling them how to live or what to do, or who to sleep with or how to dress. And I wasn’t teaching people to do that.

I just was like a cork in the ocean, and by serendipity became involved in something, which in retrospect looks like pioneering, but I don’t think it was anything of the sort,” Sabrina told Drucker. “It was just cultural change, and I happened to be in the right place at the right time—or the wrong place at the wrong time, depending on your point of view.”

Mother Flawless Sabrina was 78.

RIP, Queen.

Gentleman prefer blonds, but I dig Redheads. Just as you always expected, Gingers are mutants. The recessive MC1R gene that is in charge of the red hair, MC1R, is a genetic mutation. Genetic variations in MC1R gene are common in people with red hair. Gingers are incredibly rare; just 2% of the world’s population has red hair which comes to around 140 million. There are more redheads in Western Europe than anywhere else in the world which is 13%. Red hair comes in many different shades: Burnt Orange, Copper, Strawberry Blonde, Ginger, Harry Windsor Red.

Gingers are more sensitive to cold and hot than other hair colors, in fact, they are just more sensitive period. For surgery, it takes 25% more anesthetic to knock them out than patients with other hair colors.

Adolf Hitler was against the intermarriage of redheads believing that they produce devil children. Early Greeks believed redheads were Vampires. Aristotle wrote: “The reddish are of bad character”. Christian communities considered a mark of the devil were birthmarks, patches and the major one was red hair. Many Christians believe that Judas was a redhead, with textual proof from the Bible. This belief inspired painters to paint Judas with red hair.

Each September, the Netherlands holds a two-day celebration out of appreciation for redheads called Roodharigendag. The event includes crowning the Ginger King and Queen. Ginger Queens are always winners in my book.

Just a few Gingers from History:

Jeffrey Tambor Quits “Transparent” Amid Sexual Harassment Allegations – “This Is No Longer the Job I Signed Up For”

Jeffrey Tambor, who stars on Amazon’s Transparent, has left the series amid sexual harassment allegations against the actor. The Emmy-winning actor said in a statement to Variety,

Playing Maura Pfefferman on ‘Transparent’ has been one of the greatest privileges and creative experiences of my life. What has become clear over the past weeks, however, is that this is no longer the job I signed up for four years ago.

I’ve already made clear my deep regret if any action of mine was ever misinterpreted by anyone as being aggressive, but the idea that I would deliberately harass anyone is simply and utterly untrue. Given the politicized atmosphere that seems to have afflicted our set, I don’t see how I can return to ‘Transparent.’”

Tambor was accused of sexual harassment by his former personal assistant, a trans woman named Van Barnes, in a private Facebook post on Nov. 8, causing Amazon to open an investigation into the allegations. On Thursday, guest star Trace Lysette came forward with further alleged instances of inappropriate behavior.

Tambor said in a statement obtained by Variety at the time of Barnes’ allegations.

I am aware that a former disgruntled assistant of mine has made a private post implying that I had acted in an improper manner toward her. I adamantly and vehemently reject and deny any and all implication and allegation that I have ever engaged in any improper behavior toward this person or any other person I have ever worked with. I am appalled and distressed by this baseless allegation.

Tambor released a second statement following Lysette’s allegations.

For the past four years, I’ve had the huge privilege — and huge responsibility – of playing Maura Pfefferman, a transgender woman, in a show that I know has had an enormous, positive impact on a community that has been too long dismissed and misunderstood. Now I find myself accused of behavior that any civilized person would condemn unreservedly.

I know I haven’t always been the easiest person to work with. I can be volatile and ill-tempered, and too often I express my opinions harshly and without tact. But I have never been a predator – ever,” Tambor continued. “I am deeply sorry if any action of mine was ever misinterpreted by anyone as being sexually aggressive or if I ever offended or hurt anyone. But the fact is, for all my flaws, I am not a predator and the idea that someone might see me in that way is more distressing than I can express.”

The team behind Transparent had already begun planning a way to continue the show without Tambor once the allegations broke. No final decision about next season has been made by Amazon.

The planning Season 5 is still under consideration and is still set to debut next year. A source told Variety,

There’s momentum on the inside to continue without Jeffrey Tambor.

TMZ reports that David Cassidy‘s condition has deteriorated and he’s now in ICU and the family is preparing for the end.

David was rushed to a Florida hospital earlier this week. His organs were failing and he was in desperate need of a kidney transplant.

Sources now say David has taken a turn for the worse… he now has a breathing tube and doctors say his prospects are grim. As one source puts it,

“There’s really no issue anymore for a transplant. It’s futile.”

Doctors have summoned David’s immediate family –his son and ex-wife– back to the hospital for what could be their final visit.

So Melania Trump claims says she’s REALLY looking forward to Christmas in D.C. Today the Christmas tree arrives at The White House and FLOTUS has been busy making preparations for Christmas, not the “holidays” because white America celebrates CHRISTMAS!

Friday, she tweeted her excitement…

This year’s @WhiteHouse Christmas booklet is in printing! Excited to receive the beautiful tree Monday! #ChristmasTraditions

(“In printing?”) Anyway, Twitter was not feeling generous to let her sidestep the fact that the guy she’s married to is Scrooging up the whole country. Greg Baldwin wrote,

Perhaps three ghosts will visit your hubby on Christmas Eve…

Well, to misquote Tiny Tim,

God bless us, every one –especially, Robert Mueller.

He’ll need all the help he can get in 2018.

#RIP: “Touched by An Angel” Star Della Reese Dead at 86

Singer Della Reese, who went from being a jazz/pop star in the ‘50s and ‘60s to a popular TV actress on Touched by an Angel and other shows, died Sunday night at her home in California. She was 86.

Writes co-star Roma Downey:

“She was an incredible wife, mother, grandmother, friend, and pastor, as well as an award-winning actress and singer. Through her life and work she touched and inspired the lives of millions of people,” actress Roma Downey, Reese’s co-star on “Touched By an Angel,” said in a statement announcing Reese’s death. “She was a mother to me and I had the privilege of working with her side by side for so many years on ‘Touched by an Angel.’ I know heaven has a brand new angel this day. Della Reese will be forever in our hearts.”

Says Variety:

She was born Delloreese Patricia Early on July 6, 1931, in Detroit. She began singing in church as a six-year-old; the glamorous black vocalist-actress Lena Horne was one of the film stars she admired as a girl. By her teens, she was working as a singer in gospel luminary Mahalia Jackson’s unit.

Reared in gospel, Reese became a seductive, big-voiced secular music star with her No. 1 R&B and No. 2 pop hit “Don’t You Know” in 1959. The 45, her first single on RCA Records, was a ballad drawn from an aria from Puccini’s opera “La Boheme.”

She ranged through a series of releases that showed off her mastery of standards, jazz and contemporary pop through the early ‘70s, and over the course of her career she received four Grammy Award nominations.

By 1969 she had launched her TV show “Della” – the first talker hosted by an African-American woman – and had begun a move into an acting career that would take her to even greater national prominence.

Speaking of her TV and film work with the Associated Press’ Bob Thomas in 1997, she said, “I had good training for it. I was always a stylist, a lyricist. I became acquainted with the words in order to convince you I must believe in what I’m singing. That’s what acting is: believing. It was just like one thing flowing into another.”

After a number of guest appearances, Reese broke into TV full-time with a starring role in the hit 1975-78 Jack Albertson-Freddie Prinze comedy series “Chico and the Man.” Roles on “It Takes Two,” “Crazy Like a Fox,” “Charlie & Co.” and (opposite her good friend Redd Foxx) “The Royal Family.”

She also took starring roles in the features “Harlem Nights” and “A Thin Line Between Love and Hate” and appeared in 20 made-for-TV pictures.

Her greatest popularity came as co-star of the inspirational CBS show “Touched by an Angel.” Though the show was axed during its debut 1994-95 season, a letter-writing campaign convinced execs to bring the series back, and Reese prevailed as the heavenly samaritan Tess for a total of nine seasons, winning seven consecutive NAACP Image Awards as best lead actress in a drama and collecting two Emmy nominations and a 1998 Golden Globe nod.

News on the red carpet. “My story with ‘Sorry Not Sorry’ is about bullying, and I wanted to have her in the audience with me tonight, because I feel like we have been through some of the same things, and now we get to share this experience together.”

Roem, who is set to become the first openly transgender person elected to a state legislature, had this to say:

“I’m really grateful that Demi has spent her career advocating for people who need a voice when they feel voiceless, and that she really understands that no matter what you look like, where you come from, how you worship or who you love, you should be welcomed and celebrated because of who you are not despite of.”
