#OnThisGayDay: 1975, Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” is Released

October 31, 1975Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody is released.

Queen’s engrossing, enthralling, enigmatic Bohemian Rhapsody was written by Freddie Mercury for Queen’s album A Night At The Opera (1975). It is a six-minute suite consisting of five sections without a traditional chorus: an intro, a ballad segment, an operatic passage, a hard rock part and a reflective coda. It was most expensive single ever produced at the time of its release.

Bohemian Rhapsody was a big hit, staying at the top of the Billboard’s Singles Chart for nine weeks and selling more than a million copies in its first year. It topped the charts all over the globe, eventually becoming the UK’s third-bestselling single of all time. It is also the only song to be a Christmas Number One hit twice by the same artist. In the USA, it returned to the charts at Number Two in 1991 following Mercury’s death, and Number One again in 1992 when it was featured in the film Wayne’s World. I loved hearing it on the radio and would crank the volume while driving in my car around L.A., singing along, and it’s not an easy song to sing.

Music critics were mixed in their reactions, yet Bohemian Rhapsody remains one of Queen’s most popular songs and is frequently placed on many lists of the Greatest Songs Of All Time. The video version was ground-breaking. Rolling Stone Magazine wrote:

“Its influence cannot be overstated, practically inventing the music video seven years before MTV went on the air.”

Bohemian Rhapsody was inducted into the Grammy Hall Of Fame in 2004. In 2012, the song topped a nationwide poll in Britain as The Nation’s Favorite Song over six decades of music beating Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean, Adele’s Someone Like You, Oasis’ Don’t Look Back In Anger and The Beatles’ Hey Jude.

It certainly is one of the most peculiar and least-understood songs in the history of Pop Music. It sounds like a serious work of art, a mournful lament, and an excuse for utter silliness all at the same time. It’s equally loved by kids and geezers. It abruptly goes from a Power Ballad to Light Operetta to Grand Opera to blazing Rock and back to Power Ballad before ending six minutes later with a decisive gong.

The title is a clever twist on Hungarian Rhapsody by Franz Liszt, a title the band used for their live album of a 1986 concert in Budapest.

Mercury pieced together different sections in the manner of The Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson’s equally epic Good Vibrations (1966) with its intensive overdubbing of harmonies. Bohemian Rhapsody has over 160 overdubs, with the group’s Brian May, Roger Taylor and Mercury singing around a single microphone, recorded over three weeks of intensive work, one week of which was spent on the operatic section. May, Taylor, and Mercury reportedly sang their vocal parts continually for ten to twelve hours a day. During the recording, the only person who knew how it would all come together was Mercury. Producer Roy Thomas Baker:

“Nobody really knew how it was going to sound as a whole six-minute song until it was put together. I was standing at the back of the control room, and I just knew that I was listening for the first time to a big page in history. Something inside me told me that this was a red-letter day, and it really was.”

Here is a glossary of the zany terms used in the song:

Despite all the jokes this summer, “Scaramouche” is not a reference to Anthony Scaramucci, who was briefly POTUS’s diminutive sidekick. He is  actually a stock character from the Italian Commedia Dell’Arte tradition, a fool who is good at getting himself out of trouble. The “Fandango” is a classic Spanish Dance. “Galileo” is Galileo Galilei, who was a Florentine Renaissance astronomer, a sweet nod to astronomy fan Brian May. Figaro is taken from Gioachino Rossini’s opera The Barber Of Seville. “Bismillah” means “In the name of Allah” and is the first word in The Koran, and “Mamma Mia!” is an Italian exclamation of surprise, referring to the Virgin Mary, and is also the title of a song by ABBA that knocked Bohemian Rhapsody off the top of the charts in 1975.

The meaning of the song was made cloudy on purpose. Mercury:

“I think people should just listen to it, think about it, and then make up their own minds as to what it says to them.”

It could be a veiled account of Mercury’s gayness and the affect this had on his relationship with his best friend Mary Austen. It could just be a song about a man with mother issues who killed a man and is fearing for his soul.

Queen wanted to release Bohemian Rhapsody as a single, but their label EMI thought it was too long for radio play. The single was released in an edited form, yet the international hit version remains the full-length opus. Mercury:

“We were adamant that it could be a hit in its entirety. We have been forced to make compromises, but cutting up a song will never be one of them.”

In 2004, Queen’s Greatest Hits became the first Rock album allowed to be sold in Iran. Concerned about the messages hidden in the song, Iranian officials insisted that each copy of the cassette be issued with a leaflet that explained that although the singer says he had killed a man, it was by accident, and that he asks Allah for forgiveness (Bismillah!) to prevent Satan from getting his soul. Fat Bottomed Girls probably required a little more explanation.

#FirstLook: What Happens When Joseph Keckler Invites “Strangers From the Internet” Over? Watch

You know the brilliant young singer, composer, trouble-maker Joseph Keckler, no? I’ve written about him here before. The Wow Report is treated to the premiere of his new video that is a must-see,

Strangers from the Internet

Keckler says,

“This video is a sequel of sorts to the old “Shroom Aria,” I imagined a parade of strangers from the internet invading “my home” (an opulent Victorian mansion.)

The instrumental parts are played by an orchestra of actual strangers from the internet– players I hired through Craigslist and other platforms, who each recorded their parts alone at home. The parts were then layered together in this intricate arrangement by composer Patrick Grant.”

Portraying “The Queen” is Kecker’s sometime vocal coach and muse, Sheila Plummer and the other actors and singers are students and faculty from The University of Michigan.

And you might ask, who dubbed Joseph’s voice? No dubbing, that’s HIM singing.

Watch.

Keckler’s first book comes out this month, Dragon at the Edge of a Flat World with twenty mesmerizing tales. The stories range from his mentors and muses, to odd jobs and odder employers what it’s like to work for a blind man who runs an art gallery.

On Sunday November 19, at 7PM, Keckler will be reading and signing his new book in NYC at Howl! Happening: An Arturo Vega Project, 6 East First Street (between Bowery and Second Avenue)

#FirstLook: “Love, Simon” Is Just Another Teen Romance Movie (EXCEPT That It’s a GAY Teen Romance!) Watch

20th Century Fox is releasing yet another teen romantic dramedy, but the twist this time is that the lead is gay.

Love, Simon is based on Becky Albertalli’s 2015 Young Adult novel, Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, and directed by Greg Berlanti (Riverdale, The Flash). It follows Simon (Jurassic World‘s Nick Robinson), a teenager who starts an email romance with another closeted classmate.

Simon has all the markings of a classic, mainstream teen coming-of-age flick: football games, drunken parties, school carnivals except that the romantic leads are two guys. It’s funny, sweet, kinda sad and, but pretty ground-breaking.

Berlanti says,

There’s this one section of the film where Simon imagines this one boy and imagines them kissing underneath the mistletoe at Christmas. In every other major studio film, it’s always the guy and the girl. And there was something so powerful about it being just a guy imagining himself with this other guy in a film again that was going to be marketed and sold as a mainstream romantic comedy.

Here are some images that EW just featured from the film along with a clip. One of the big sequences of the film is a Halloween party.

Kitty Needs a Butthole!

A 10-day-old kitten named Cluck who was rescued from the Los Angeles streets, is in dire need of an anus.

Cluck was born with a condition called an imperforate anus, which means her urine and feces come out of the same hole. That’s fine for now, as she still nursing and her poop is all liquidy. But according to Shawn Simons of the Kitty Bungalow Charm School for Wayward Cats,

“When she gets on harder food, it will be impossible for poop to pass through.”

Oh dear.

To that end, Simmons has started a Crowdrise campaign called “Kitty Needs A Butthole” to help raise the $4,000 needed to fund Cluck’s surgery.

“We would first need to get an MRI to see how extensive the problem is, and to see where her intestines connect,” she said.

The surgery is risky, but Simons feels Cluck is a good candidate.

“She’s gaining weight and seems healthy other than not having the butthole,” she said.

So far, they’ve raised over $9,000 – which means that other cats in the facility – even those with buttholes – will benefit from from the donations. (via HuffPo: Photo courtesy of the Kitty Bungalow Charm School for Wayward Cats)

Today is patriot/pornographer Larry Flynt‘s 75th birthday. In honor of that, we thought we’d show a raw interview clip from a 2016 show we did for the National Geographic channel called Original Sin: How Sex Changed the World in which Larry describes the influence of Hustler, the magazine photo that got him shot, his landmark court case “Flynt v. Falwell,” and the cost of freedom of speech. Fascinating stuff.

Dustin Hoffman Apologizes For Alleged Sexual Harassment: “It’s Not Who I Am”

The Hollywood Reporter published an article this morning from writer Anna Graham Hunter who alleged that she was sexually harassed as a 17-year-old intern on the set of 1985 TV film Death of a Salesman by Dustin Hoffman.

“I loved the attention,” she wrote. “Until I didn’t.”

She details her many claims – among them that he grabbed her butt and made vulgar comments to her – in a series of letters she wrote to her sister that lay bare the power dynamic of big-time Hollywood stars and the defenseless plebeians who work for them.

Now the 80-year-old Oscar winner is apologizing. Kind of.

Hoffman said, “I have the utmost respect for women and feel terrible that anything I might have done could have put her in an uncomfortable situation.”

He added in his statement to the AP, “I am sorry. It is not reflective of who I am.”

So, it’s: “I’m sorry if you were offended by something I don’t remember doing and isn’t reflective of who I am.”

Which seems to be going around a lot lately.

You can read her article here.

“The Boys in the Band” Is Coming to Broadway Starring Jim Parsons, Zachary Quinto, Matt Bomer, & Andrew Rannells

Well, this is a head-scratcher.

The wildly influential but terribly dated play The Boys in the Band is set for limited 15-week Broadway engagement at the Booth Theatre (222 West 45th Street), April 30 – August 12, 2018. Produced by Ryan Murphy (OF COURSE) and David Stone, it will star Jim Parsons, Zachary Quinto, Matt Bomer and Andrew Rannells (among others), as ’60s-era gay men who gather in a NYC apartment for a friend’s birthday party.

via Broadway World:

After the drinks are poured and the music turned up, the evening slowly exposes the fault-lines beneath their friendships and the self-inflicted heartache that threatens their solidarity. A true theatrical game-changer, The Boys in the Band helped spark a revolution by putting gay men’s lives onstage — unapologetically and without judgement – in a world that was not yet willing to fully accept them.

Says Ryan Murphy:

“The significance of The Boys in the Band cannot be underestimated. In 1968, Mart Crowley made theatrical history by giving voice to gay men onstage, in this uncompromising, blisteringly honest, and wickedly funny play,” said Ryan Murphy. “The play was groundbreaking in its exploration of how gay men treated each other and how they were made to feel about themselves. And while some attitudes have thankfully shifted, it’s important to be reminded of what we have overcome and how much further we still have to go.”

David Stone adds,

“Everything has changed. And nothing has changed.”

What a grim thought.

I mean: I’m curious to see how the pre-Stonewall self-loathing bitchiness will play in modern times. I frankly can’t imagine it being relevant to today’s audience-goers, but we shall see. We shall see.

The Boys in the Band premiered off-Broadway in 1968 where it was scheduled to run for five performances at the Playwrights’ Unit. It unexpectedly became the talk of the town, running for over 1,000 performances, and drawing the likes of Jackie Kennedy, Marlene Dietrich, Groucho Marx, and Rudolf Nureyev, among many others. The entire original company also appeared in William Friedkin‘s landmark 1970 film version.

OMG, it’s the biggest season of Million Dollar Listing Los Angeles EVER!

Season 10 premieres TONIGHT on BRAVO at 9/8c.

The deals are more jaw-dropping, the mansions are grander, and, you know what, the drama is bigger, too.

And if all THAT isn’t exciting enough, a brand-new agent has been added to the block: super-shark Tracy Tutor Maltas, who is one of the top agents at Douglas Elliman.

“Don’t be fooled by her charisma; she’s a boss,” Josh Altman teases in the above trailer.

We’ll see Tracy’s fierceness as she slays the real estate biz, as well as her more nurturing side as a wife and mom.

But WAIT! There’s MORE!

Speaking of parenthood, Josh Altman will find that juggling life with his new baby girl and the demands of his career will prove to be quite the challenge. And no, your eyes didn’t deceive you; that was Josh Altman’s wife, Heather Bilyeu Altman, reuniting with her former boss Madison Hildebrand. We wonder what that’s all about. But since Madison is having great success at work and in his personal life with his new boyfriend Cody, we doubt that anything can get him down.

Business is also booming for beloved Brits James Harris and David Parnes. But even they won’t be able to escape the drama this season. In particular, James finds himself playing referee as Josh Flagg and his then-fiancé Bobby Boyd seem to have their biggest fight ever right before their wedding. Emotions have never been this high among the MDLLA crew.

Smell Finger Lickin’ Good with New KFC Drumstick Bath Bomb

Because who doesn’t want to smell like greasy, fried chicken?

Thanks to KFC’s new fried drumstick-shaped bath bomb, now we all can!

Via Oddity Central:

KFC recently teamed up with Japanese novelty retailer Village Vanguard to create one of its most outrageous products yet – bath salts shaped like a cooked drumstick that makes your bathtub look and smell like one of the fast food restaurant’s vats of used frying oil, and leaves you smelling like fried chicken after a bath. Who would want to reek of KFC chicken, you ask? Well, the fast food chain is really popular in Japan, and we all know how much they love crazy things over there, so the unusual bath bomb is practically a guaranteed hit.

Believe it or not, KFC and Village Vanguard really put a lot of effort into this unique novelty item. Not only is it shaped and colored like an actual fried drumstick – tin foil holder and all – but it actually looks like it’s frying when dropped into your bathtub.

As soon as it makes contact with warm water, the drumstick starts to dissolve, with the tiny carbon dioxide bubbles creating the illusion of frying. The water also turns an orange-red color, like used oil, and the air is filled with the smell of KFC’s secret mix of “spices and herbs”.

Delightful. So how can you get your hands on a drumstick bath bomb? Well, it’s not as easy as going through the drive-through window of your local KFC.

Unfortunately, the honor of smelling good-enough-to-eat is only reserved to a lucky few. Instead of making the drumstick bath bombs available to everyone, KFC is only offering them to 100 lucky fans, through a raffle hosted on its Japanese website. Participants must like the KFC account on Twitter and share a specific tweet to be entered in the raffle. The campaign runs from November 1st through the 15th.

Maybe if there’s enough clamoring for the bombs, they’ll be released to the general public. Hopefully in time for Christmas! what a great stocking stuffer!

Miss the 1980s? “Stranger Things” is Being Sold in a VHS Box at Target!

Courtesy of Target and Netflix

I was in my 20 and early 30s in the 1980s, and for me the super scary Netflix series Stranger Things is nostalgia trip with reminders of the works of Steven Spielberg, John Carpenter, and Stephen King. For someone like me, half the fun of watching it is grabbing all those 1980 Pop Culture references to films such as: Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986), Altered States (1980), The Fog (1980), Firestarter (1984), Body Double (1984), Gremlins (1984) and especially E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982).

You kids are probably too young to remember them, but one thing I am not nostalgic for is those 1980s video rental shops. I know it must be hard to believe, but to watch a movie on your television in the 1980s, you would have to travel to a physical retail business that rented home videos. The rental store had certain conditions and terms signed in a rental agreement, including a credit card. My first video store, circa 1982, required a trip from my apartment on Seattle’s Capitol Hill to downtown, and required $100 yearly dues. Then, you had to rent it for $6 (equivalent to $15 today). I really had to want that movie. If someone had told me that in the 21st century, you could get a video for a dollar out a box in front of the grocery store, I would have thought them daft.

In the 1980s, video rental stores rented VHS and Beta tapes of films. In a lifetime of making questionable choices, in the 1980s, I bought a Sony Betamax player, betting it was the way of the future. Most video stores dropped Beta tapes when VHS won the format war by the end of the decade. I have a 1984 episode of Murder, She Wrote that I appeared in… on Beta.

So, don’t feel even a little sad if see your video store is in now a Payday Loan, run out of business by Netflix and other on-demand streaming services. Yet, if for some reason you do want to remember video stores and just how crucial they were to your weekend nights in the 1980s, and you feel that you really need to go back to VHS, Target has released a special collector’s edition of Stranger Things, Season 1. It looks just like it has been sitting on the shelf at a video store since 1986, complete with faded packaging. The four CDs or laser discs inside the VHS-styled box even have the Please Be Kind & Rewind sticker. The package comes with a special poster and a post-it note reminder that reads: “Friends Don’t Lie”.

Besides the deal with Target, Netflix is partnering with dispensaries with another unique product coming in 2018. They will be offering their own strains of marijuana and special edibles for your binge-watching pleasure. Now that’s something we didn’t have in the 1980s; legal weed  (Alaska, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington)!

Photo via Netflix

I haven’t read if Stranger Things will also be released on Beta. I hope so, I still have my player!

Dozens of Octopi Found Crawling Around a Welsh Beach: What Are They Up To?

BEWARE! BEWARE! THE OCTOPI ARE ORGANIZING! THEY’VE GOT BIG PLANS! AND THEY’RE COMING FOR US!

via The Guardian:

Dozens of octopus have been spotted emerging from the ocean and crawling along the Welsh coast in a nightly pilgrimage that has perplexed people at a seaside town.

Brett Jones, who runs SeaMôr dolphin-watching boat trips, said he first witnessed the phenomenon when he was returning from a sunset trip.

Alien intelligence: the extraordinary minds of octopuses and other cephalopods

“It was a bit like an End Of Days scenario,” he told the BBC. “There were probably about 20 or 25 on the beach. I have never seen them out of the water like that.”

He said it was “really rare” for the creatures to end up on dry land, adding: “Maybe they are getting confused by the bright lights in New Quay harbour and maybe they are dying off after summer or getting knackered after the recent storms.”

OR MAYBE THEY’RE UP TO NO GOOD!

This just might be the turning point that we will look back upon in years to come, and say “This! This is when our cephalopodian overlords began their revolution!”

The Guardian article ends with Jones encouraging Welsh beachgoers who saw land-hugging octopus to return them to the water, but warned: “Wear gloves, they bite like mad.”

Um… NOT what I wanted to hear. Intelligent, land-roving possibly alien monsters who “bite like mad” – we’re so doomed.

There’s a “Stranger Things” Dildo For You If That’s Something You Think You Need

“Slip into the underworld with this inter-dimensional monster dong!”

If you’ve already tired of your Babadook dildo (the BabaDong), your Pokemon dildo (the PokeMOAN), your Game of Thrones dildo (the Game of Moans) and your Star Wars dildo – might I suggest this Stranger Things dildo? It’s called the Demogorgon (of course, of course), is only $55, and comes in a large variety of colors, including Demogorgon’s Natural, Demogorgon’s Signature, Ectoplasm, Sinister Pumpkin, and Salted Caramel Blondie. (Most of the styles come with an additional charge of $10 to $20.)

via Dangerous Minds:

The good people at Bad Dragon unveiled their new “Demogorgon” model of imitation penis on October 20, and it might be the only dildo ever to come with its own teaser video with no sexual angle whatsoever, as well as a highly produced six-minute commercial lovingly shot with all the 80s goodness you could ever muster. They even made sure to include Spielbergian forest flashlights right out of E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial.

The closing credit sequence features various “making-of’ clips of the actors in action, also surely a rare occurrence for a dildo commercial. The cast includes the intriguingly named Elise Brillig and Katsuri Epsilon. You can be certain that a tri-colored royal mesh trucker hat was included among the wardrobe effects.

It’s all rather perplexing (and not at all arousing), but what the hell. It’s the perfect way to combine your love of Stranger Things with your love of… yourself.

Watch the pitch perfect parody/teaser trailers below.

WOWPresents: Clips” is our EXCLUSIVE daily peek into the extensive library of WOW shows, interviews, and pop culture ephemera we’ve collected over the last three decades.

Tomorrow would have been boundary-busting photographer Robert Mapplethorpe‘s 71st birthday. Crazy. He could theoretically still be at the peak of his career. World of Wonder, of course, made the 2016 HBO doc Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures, so we thought we’d dig up the trailer for today’s WOW Presents Clip OTD. Watch it below.

The only thing more outrageous than Robert Mapplethorpe’s photographs was his life. He was obsessed with magic and in particular, with what he saw as the magic of photography and the magic of sex. He pursued both with insatiable dedication.

“Look at the pictures.” With these words, politician Jesse Helms denounced the work of Robert Mapplethorpe. Twenty-five years later the first feature length documentary about the artist since his death, by acclaimed directors Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato, does just that, with unprecedented unlimited access to his archives and work.

Mapplethorpe might have had hundreds of lovers, but only a few were key relationships, almost all of whom are present in the film. Rounding out this portrait of the artist are the recollections of his older sister Nancy and youngest brother Edward. An artist and photographer in his own right, Edward worked as Robert’s assistant for many years and was responsible for much of the technical excellence of the work.

But the most prominent voice in the documentary is Mapplethorpe’s own. Thanks to a number of rediscovered interviews, he is our narrator. Completely candid, shockingly honest, he speaks about his life, loves, and work. Seen through his eyes they were a seamless whole, a complete work of art.

The result is a portrait of the artist who dedicated his life not only to becoming an artist but also to making his chosen medium, photography, respected and valued as a fine art. And he succeeded; his final show, The Perfect Moment, self-planned as he was dying of AIDS, proved to be a time bomb, igniting a culture war that still reverberates today. And since his death, his Foundation, worth hundreds of millions, has made multi-million dollar gifts enabling museums from the Guggenheim to the Getty to set up and maintain photography collections.
