Alaska on Taylor Swift: “If She Thinks She’s Queen of the Snakes, She Is Terribly Mistaken”

In the days leading up to the surprise announcement of her upcoming album, Reputation, Taylor Swift posted a number of cryptic snake videos on Instagram and Twitter…

A post shared by Taylor Swift (@taylorswift) on

….and her fans were all

Of course, there already IS a snake queen in our midst, the sssssssssneaky Alaska Thunderfuck, who appropriated the serpent symbolism after her underhanded Allstars 2 shenaniganssssss left the Drag Race fandom COMPLETE SHOOK.

FADER magazine asked her about all that, and if she had any advice for Tay-Tay…

FADER: After fans swarmed your comments with the snake emoji, you began using it yourself, wearing snake jewelry, mentioning it a bunch — basically reclaiming it. What was your thinking in doing that?
ALASKA: You have to take the tragic and turn it to magic. People used to call me a horse face. Then I adopted the horse as my spirit animal. Something that brought me pain and anguish ended up bringing me strength and joy. So when I got bombarded with snakes I got a new spirit animal. Lucky me.

Do you think it was a successful strategy to diffuse the situation?
It’s really all you can do. Go through the pain and embarrassment until you get to the other side. Otherwise you spend your life hiding from it, constantly reminded of it whenever you see it, and going to pieces over it time and again. If people are laughing at you, you might as well be in on the joke.

Were you surprised to see Taylor Swift basically doing the same thing? Do you have any advice for her as someone who has essentially flipped a ‘villain narrative’?
Straight people love to steal from drag queens. It happens all the time. But luckily I love to inspire young artists. The truth is, people who have longevity are able to be aware of their public perception and take it and use it and make it work for them. So bravo to Taylor. I never stopped liking her and I still do. But if she thinks she’s the Queen of Snakes, she is terribly mistaken.

Roger Stone Gleefully Says If We Impeach Trump, Get Ready for a Bloody Civil War

Former Trump campaign advisor Roger Stone (who still very much counsels the President) was stopped by TMZ at the airport and went off on a wild rant, saying if Congress impeaches Trump, there will be all-out civil war because BOTH SIDES (here we go again) are heavily armed…

The people who are calling for impeachment are the people who didn’t vote for him. They need to get over it…. [Trump] whipped her ASS… It’s over, you lost. TRY to impeach him. Just try it. You will have a spasm of violence in this country, an insurrection, like you have never seen. No question. Both sides are heavily armed, my friend. Yes, absolutely. This is not 1974. The people will not stand for impeachment. The politician who votes for it will be endangering their own life. There will be violence on both sides. Let me make this clear, I’m not advocating violence, but I’m predicting it.

Kiiiiiinda sounds like he’s advocating it – or at least planting some seeds – but whatever you say, Roger.

Shhhhh: Don’t Tell Michelle Visage, But a Korean Nail Artist Just Created LED Light-Up Disco Nails

Nail aficionados, the future is NOW!

Park Eunkyung, a popular nail technician from South Korea, recently posted a series of photos on her Instagram of her latest nail art idea – fake clear nails with LEDs attached to them. The nails have a small hole drilled in them, with the glowing gemstones on top and a teeny-tiny battery on the underside.

Via Oddity Central:

It’s not clear how long the batteries last, or if Eunkyung even plans on putting out a commercial line of LED nail decorations, but people are already going crazy for them. The artist’s photos and videos on Instagram have already been viewed tens of thousands of times, and may end up becoming a thing.

Of course, at this stage “disco nails” are still in their clunky infancy, but I’m sure by the third or fourth generation the batteries will be all-but-unnoticeable.

And think how great they’ll look with your blinking LED disco eyelashes!

Halloween Is Coming: Will You Be Wearing This Sexy Jon Snow Outfit?

Well, of COURSE there’s a sexy Jon Snow outfit already available for Halloween. Not that we need it, as we just learned that the Night’s Watch fur cloaks are all really just $79 IKEA rugs that have been dyed and distressed and you can totally do it yourself, but hey, why not spend $149 for a few flimsy pieces of studded spandex and a faux fur cape (fishnets not included)?

Via Yandy:

You’ll be prepared for winter in this exclusive Sexy Northern Queen costume featuring a black romper with a high neckline, gold stud accents, a cut-out bodice panel, draping panels with studded accents, an adjustable waist belt with a bronze buckle, a cheeky cut back, and a long black cloak with a faux fur trim and a criss-cross tie closure. (Pantyhose not included.)

Hubba hubba. Meet you in the cave, Mr Snow….

What ARE you going as, btw? Have you started thinking about it yet? I’m either going to be Louise Linton or Sarah Huckabee Sanders, but those might be a little played by October…

In Honor of Fiorucci’s Relaunch Next Month: Here’s a Look Back at Those Vintage Ads and Stickers!

50 years after its launch with a small boutique in Milan, Fiorucci is still a part of our pop culture lexicon and imagery. The iconic brand is even mentioned in Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers’ He’s The Greatest Dancer, as recorded by Sister Sledge:

“Halston, Gucci, Fiorucci / He looks like a still, that man is dressed to kill…”

The man behind the magic was Italian designer Elio Fiorucci.

Fiorucci became famous for its audacious print apparel, high-waisted skintight jeans, colorful platform shoes and the many variations of its Two Angels logo. It wasn’t cheap, but it certainly was covetable. I once went into the flagship store in Manhattan, and I couldn’t even afford a belt, so I opted for a souvenir postcard instead.

The clothing was the least essential element of Fiorucci’s success. Instead, it was the retail ambiance, the branding, and the sense of community at the store that made it all happen in the Golden Age of Disco, and, of course, the outrageous ad campaigns. Fiorucci stickers with sexy, naughty campaign images were spotted around town and the shopping bags were almost as sought after as the clothing. The stickers for one monokini campaign were seized by the police.

In the mid-1970s, NYC’s Fiorucci shop gained the moniker “The Daytime Studio 54”. Among the regulars: Debbie Harry, Keith Haring, Jackie Kennedy-Onassis, Calvin Klein, Bianca Jagger, Cher, Federico Fellini, Divine, Elizabeth Taylor, Sylvester and teenage Marc Jacobs.

The legendary cabaret performer Joey Arias was a shop girl at the store. Andy Warhol set up an office in the store, and 16-year-old Madonna played her first gig there. Later, at the brand’s 15th anniversary party at Studio 54, Madonna jumped out of the birthday cake. The talented artist and stylist Maripol was the store manager. At the Milan store, Haring painted murals on the walls. It launched the careers of designers Betsey Johnson and Anna Sui.

The most significant items were the jeans, made from lycra and vinyl. They were skintight, with an almost spray-on look that Fiorucci claimed he created after being inspired by women in Ibiza in wet jeans; his designs left little to the imagination.

He helped to popularize animal prints in 1970s and early 1980s fashion, although he was a vegetarian and never used leather or fur in his jeans or other garments.

Times changed and Fiorucci shuttered the stores in the mid-1980s and sold the brand in 1990. Elio Fiorucci passed away in summer 2015.

But, relaunching next month, new owners Stephen and Janie Schaffer are reviving the gold lame, cowboy boots and Afghan coats. They have promised to bring back the whole Fiorucci look, along with the vintage ads, at a new Fiorucci store in London’s Soho neighborhood and at Barney’s in NYC.  We’re ready for a return to Disco, right kids?

Fiorucci’s inventive graphics with their cool typography and colors, in themes like Electron, Swim, Romance, Dance, Pin-Up, always played up the postmodern American graphic kitsch of 1950s through their quirky Post-Punk, Hardcore and Sci-Fi aesthetic. Here’s a look at those crazy original ads from the Fiorucci archives:

You Guys, Omg, Biggie Smalls Just Came Back to Tell the Hollywood Medium and Lil’ Kim What Happened Before He Died!

On Wednesday’s episode of Hollywood Medium, rap legend Lil’ Kim asked twinkly psychic Tyler Henry the million dollar question: WHO KILLED NOTORIOUS B.I.G.?

Unfortunately, after making contact, Biggie’s spirit didn’t QUITE have the answer (or wasn’t telling the E! audience), but he did shed some light on what happened just prior to being gunned down.

“One of the impressions that did come through was a memory right before his passing, of him standing outside of a residence and he acknowledges this memory of looking out, taking a deep breath and the feeling is like his soul was preparing to go even though he consciously didn’t know what was about to fully happen,” Henry told Lil’ Kim.

“It is interesting to note, he is having me bring up two people, two people, two people and showing me two people conspiring,” he continued. “There’s a feeling of almost like people talking or hearing that someone might not have wanted him to live. He’s showing me a symbol of death threat and then not taking death threat seriously, which would indicate if we don’t know who did it, many people would.”

And even though he was evasive about the killer’s identity, Lil’ Kim knew what Biggie was telling Tyler.

“He was definitely at a party before it happened,” she said. “I will say this, it was a little after 2Pac passed away. I remember he called us all in the room and he had a meeting with us. He was like, we have to stay tight. It’s almost like he felt something but no one else picked up on it. I took it very seriously.”

Afterwards, Henry spoke to ET about what went down with Biggie and Lil’ Kim.

He explained that Biggie was more interested in relaying “some of the things he didn’t get to say to [Kim] that he needed to get off his chest” than his murder. “When it came to his actual passing, there was not that much in that department,” he explained. “It’s always interesting to see what they prioritize in bringing through. You would think sometimes people would come through and bring up their death as the first thing and sometimes those are the people who don’t.”

During the reading, he relayed that the late rapper considered Lil’ Kim his “soulmate,” adding, “For him, loving you was the greatest accomplishment his soul truly feels it was ever able to do. You showed him what love was but you helped teach him in ways that no one else did and that’s so special.”

B.I.G. also wanted to apologize to her because “he feels like you deserved more than you got.”

The funniest PSA you’ll see all day.

In a cabride home from Big Fat Anus Night at Mother Lode, comedian Michael Henry and Dragula fan-favorite Meatball lay out the reasons that gaggles of girls and straight boys shouldn’t invade gay bars.

[They’re[ going to stroke their own egos and gawk at us… I’m not telling women where they can or cannot go, I just don’t think you are going to our gay bars appropriately. Do you even know what a gay bar is? It’s a place where gay men go to feel safe, welcomed, and flawless because they don’t feel that way outside of gay bars…. You can go to gay bars anytime you want to, it’s a public space. Just go knowing that you are not the focus and should not be the focus. WE are the focus. Places like Big Fat Anus are precious places for a lot of people…

Preach mama.

Colton Haynes’ “Teen Wolf” Character Is Gay Now, and Kisses Charlie Carver in Upcoming Teaser

We haven’t seen Colton Haynes’ character Jackson since Season 2 when he was some sort of lizard monster. He slithered off to London in that season’s finale and has been off the radar until this new clip from an upcoming episode of Season 6B reveals he’s BACK… and SURPRISE! SURPRISE! he’s now GAY and dating Ethan Steiner (played by Charlie Carver) (one half of the scintillating Carver Twins, don’t you know).

Via TVLine:

The former Beacon Hills residents are now shacking up in Jolly ol’ England, where a furious Ethan (Charlie Carver) is seen leaving a series of voicemails for Jackson (Colton Haynes), whom he believes forgot their anniversary. As it turns out, he was merely distracted by a pair of no-good hunters. But don’t worry, they get what’s coming to ’em.

Haynes and Carver spoke to Entertainment Weekly about their characters’ relationship.

“We’re an odd couple,” Carver tells EW. “His character’s always been kind of an arrogant prick, so I’m the one who tones him down.”

“They complement each other perfectly,” Haynes says. “They have a really beautiful relationship.”

Awwww. Sweet. And nice to see that Teen Wolf is actually giving fans some LGBTQ action as opposed to just queerbaiting (which I why I stopped watching the show after season 4).

Watch below:

New episodes of Teen Wolf air Sundays at 8/7c on MTV, leading up to the series finale on Sept. 24. (Note: Because of the MTV Video Music Awards, Teen Wolf is taking this weekend off.)

#FridayNightNewsDump: Gorka Resigns! Trump Pardons Arpaio!

Trump has pardoned controversial former sheriff Joe Arpaio of his conviction for criminal contempt and White House shill Sebastian Gorka resigns!

Joe Arpaio, a sheriff in Maricopa County, Arizona, was found guilty of criminal contempt last month for disregarding a court order in a racial profiling case. Arpaio’s sentencing was scheduled for October 5. US District Judge Susan Bolton in the July 31 order wrote,

“Not only did (Arpaio) abdicate responsibility, he announced to the world and to his subordinates that he was going to continue business as usual no matter who said otherwise.”

Trump indicated he would pardon Arpaio at a rally in Phoenix, Arizona, on Tuesday:

ANNNDDD…

Trump’s adviser Sebastian Gorka resigned late Friday night. According to CNN, the controversial aide is leaving his post as deputy assistant to the President. He said in a letter to Trump,

“Regrettably, outside of yourself, the individuals who most embodied and represented the policies that will ‘Make America Great Again,’ have been internally countered, systematically removed, or undermined in recent months”… adding that “given recent events, it is clear to me that forces that do not support the MAGA promise are – for now – ascendant within the White House.”

Many had suspected that Gorka would be the next to go after the departure of Bannon, who he previously worked for as national security editor at Breitbart.

News of Bannon’s departure came last week, as the Trump administration reeled from the President’s tepid response to white supremacist violence in Charlottesville, Va.

And the beat goes on…

#BornThisDay: Writer, Christopher Isherwood

Cover from University of Minnesota Press

August 26, 1904– Christopher Isherwood:

“Life is not so bad if you have plenty of luck, a good physique and not too much imagination.”

In the summer of 1971, I was doing summer stock theatre in Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho. Lucky me, at 17-years-old, I was enjoying my first professional theatre work, plus I was  being doted on and delighting in my first hot affair with another male, a fellow actor who was much older than me. Ron was 23 years old. He was an actual college graduate! I had a hard time wrapping my teenage mind around the notion that someone could be finished with college and still have interest in me. Ron lived in San Francisco and I would visit him there several times in the next few years.

The film version of the musical Cabaret was to open the following spring and there was already lots of buzz about the Bob Fosse directed movie. Loving the Original Broadway Cast Album, I became preoccupied with the film version. My summer fling was well aware of my anticipation. Out of the blue, in a gesture of pure sweetness, Ron gave me a gift of the source material The Berlin Stories by Christopher Isherwood. He promised me that I would love this book and that in the spring we would see the film together. He kept that promise. I flew from Spokane to San Francisco for a weekend in February 1972 and saw Cabaret in its first week of release.

One month into my 18th year and I was kicking around San Francisco, delighting in the divine decadence of my new gay life. I listened to music, went to the clubs, drank, drugged and Homosexuelle Erfahrungen Genossen. This is what I think of when I think of Isherwood.

Not celebrated nearly enough, and mostly noted for all the wrong reasons, Isherwood greatly influenced the direction of fiction writing with his “I Am ACamera” approach to narration. Isherwood’s memoir Christopher And His Kind (1976) is surly one of the best gay themed books of all time, equally enthralling with literary revelations and sexual adventures. He tells the tale of his walking away from uptight, upper-class English life, and spending much of his 20s in Berlin between the wars dating young working-class Heiße Junge Männer. In Berlin, Isherwood fell in love with a young German, Heinz Neddermeyer, at a time when rooms for rent are hard to come by. He moved into Heinz’s family’s one bedroom apartment. The parents moved out of their bedroom and slept in the living room so the young men could enjoy a double bed in privacy. It is here that he introduced readers to Jean Ross, the inspiration for Sally Bowles in The Berlin Stories. A section of the book became the play I Am A Camera (1951) adapted by gay playwright John Van Druten. It was made into a film in 1955. Both play and film starred the late, great Julie Harris as Bowles. A decade later came the stage musical Cabaret, and then, of course, Liza Minnelli as Bowles in the film version.

I am a camera with its shutter open, quite passive, recording, not thinking. Recording the man shaving at the window opposite and the woman in the kimono washing her hair. Someday, all this will have to be developed, carefully printed, fixed.”

Isherwood described their relationship as an adoption, because Neddermeyer was so much younger and not exactly worldly. They traveled Europe and North Africa until May 1937 when Neddermeyer was expelled from Luxembourg and forced to return to Germany. The next day he was arrested by the Gestapo and sentenced to three and half years of hard labor. When he was freed, he married a woman and had a son.

It was not uncommon for gay men at that time to turn away from their former lives after the Nazi’s sentenced them to prison. Although Neddermeyer and Isherwood continued to correspond, they would not see each other again until November 1952 while Isherwood was visiting England and Germany promoting The Berlin Stories.

In November 1956 Isherwood received a letter from Neddermeyer writing that he had been in a political argument at the factory where he worked in East Berlin. Fearing arrest, he fled to Hamburg. Isherwood sent him money. Nothing else is mentioned about him in the Isherwood diaries except fond memories of their travels and a sympathy note from Neddermeyer when Isherwood’s mother died in 1960. Isherwood never had contact with him after the publication of the first volume of Isherwood’s diaries. Neddermeyer wrote that he was absolutely appalled by the candidness of the book.

After Berlin, Isherwood moved to NYC with his BFF, poet W.H. Auden. He found literary success and a friendship with fellow writer Truman Capote. Isherwood eventually settled in LA. When he was 48-years-old he met a teenager, Don Bachardy, on the beach in Santa Monica. They were together more than 30 years, until Isherwood left this world in 1986.

His very best novel, A Single Man (1964), is in my Top 10 All-Time Favorite Works Of Fiction. A Single Man is loosely based on the period when Isherwood and Bachardy attempted to live separate lives, although the couple had always enjoyed one of those modern “open relationships”. It was made into a gorgeous, faithful film in 2010, by first time director, openly gay designer Tom Ford. It is a stylish, stunning, skilled look at love and loss, anchored by an elegant, nuanced, sophisticated performance by Colin Firth, whose English reticence is perfect for the story of the discreetly gay English expatriate George. Firth’s handsome bespectacled English Lit college professor is withdrawn, pained, yet sensual, with whiffs of wit, irony, and self-depreciation. Firth was robbed of an Academy Award that year. Jeff Bridges won for Crazy Heart, having lost the previous year for True Grit to Firth for The King’s Speech. Got that? The right actors always win for the wrong film.

Through the decades, I would read many books by and about Isherwood, including his three volumes of diaries: Diaries: 1939-1960Diaries: The 1960sLiberation: 1970-1983. I even purchased a new annotated re-issue of The Berlin Stories.

I have always been in awe and fascinated by Isherwood’s long life together with artist Bachardy. That story is told in an excellent documentary Chris & Don: A Love Story (2007). Their tale is told using Bachardy’s recorded reminiscences filmed in the bungalow in Santa Monica that they shared for three decades, with artfully inserted archival footage and home movies, including glimpses of pals Auden, Igor Stravinsky and Tennessee Williams. Reenactments and whimsical animated sequences based on cartoons the couple used in their personal correspondence give the film an original touch. With a close-up look at Bachardy’s long sought artistic success away from the considerable shadow of his great love, Chris & Don: A Love Story is a special celebration of an extraordinary couple.

Also on your must-see list should be the BBC’s adaptation of Christopher And His Kind (2011), adapted from that Isherwood’s autobiography with the same title. It has Isherwood played by The Crown’s Matt Smith, along with Toby JonesDouglas Booth, and Imogen Poots in the Sally Bowles spot. It perfectly captures the essence of Isherwood and company and the atmosphere of pre-war Berlin. All of the production elements are top drawer. It is a glorious film. Find it, and also read everything by and about Christopher and his kind; you won’t be sorry.

Bachardy (R) painting Isherwood

Bachardy (R) painting Isherwood, film still from Chris & Don: A Love Story, Jack Shear for Asphalt Stars Productions

During Isherwood’s final illness in 1986, Bachardy drew or painted him almost every day, even after Isherwood’s death. These portraits are among Bachardy’s finest work. They are gathered together and published as Last Drawings Of Christopher Isherwood (1990). Bachardy has gone on to be as famous as an artist as Isherwood is as a writer. He has produced over 10,000 portraits. His celebrity portraits were collected along with selections from his diaries in the fabulous Stars In My Eyes (2000). His work is in collections at the Smithsonian Museum and the National Portrait Gallery in London. He oversees the posthumous publication of Isherwood’s diaries, novels and travel books. He continues to paint or draw.

From A Single Man:

“What’s so phony nowadays is all this familiarity. Pretending there isn’t any difference between people. If you and I are no different, what do we have to give each other? How can we ever be friends?”

Hurricane Harvey Slams Texas with 140 MPH Winds & 13 Ft. Storm Surge

Hurricane Harvey blasted ashore as a Category 4 around 11PM last night, between Port Aransas and Port O’Connor, Texas. Right now it’s a Category 1 with winds at 80-90 mph.

Coastal cities are anticipating a 13-foot storm surge with inland locations are predicted to get as much as 40 inches of rain through Wednesday.

According to CNN, here are the bullet points:

• Harvey’s impact will be devastating and leave areas “uninhabitable for weeks or months,” forecasters said.
• Even though Harvey had made landfall and weakened, it was still a dangerous storm and “turning into a deadly inland event,” the FEMA chief tweeted.
• More than 213,000 customers were without power around 7:30 a.m. ET, on the Texas Gulf Coast, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas said, amid reports of downed power lines and trees.
• Almost 10 inches of rain was reported by 5 a.m. ET at a few locations in southeast Texas, the National Weather Service said.
• A tide gauge in Port Lavaca, Texas, reported storm surge of 6.4 feet, the hurricane center said.
• Structural and building problems were reported in Rockport, Aransas Pass, and Port Aransas, Texas, said Tom Beal, a meteorologist with National Weather Service office in Corpus Christi.
• Rockport’s mayor had advised residents who refused to evacuate to write their names and Social Security numbers on their forearms to “help out first responders should they find a body.”

Roy Laird, assistant chief with the Rockport Volunteer Fire Department, told CNN early Saturday,

“We had probably 140-mph winds earlier. It was howling.”

Joey Walker, 25, rode out the storm from a house on Galveston Island and posted a video of near-white out conditions overlooking Stewart Beach.

This will be going on for days…

#Breaking: Trump Signs Transgender Military Ban

Trump just signed a directive that the military not move forward with an Obama-era plan that would have allowed transgender individuals to be recruited into the armed forces. He also directed the departments of Defense and Homeland Security

“to determine how to address transgender individuals currently serving based on military effectiveness and lethality, unitary cohesion, budgetary constraints, applicable law, and all factors that may be relevant.”

The White House official who briefed reporters on the memo on tonight declined to say whether transgender troops would be allowed to remain in the military under those policy guidelines but signaled that the administration was returning to the military’s pre-2016 policy under which no transgender individuals were allowed to serve openly in the armed forces.

This comes a month after Trump said on Twitter,

“After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military. Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail.”

#OnThisDay: The 1970 Women’s Strike For Equality

August 26, 1970The Women’s Strike For Equality

Betty Friedan:

“Don’t Iron While the Strike is Hot!”

The Women’s Strike For Equality was a nationwide demonstration for Women’s Rights that was held on the 50th anniversary of the 19th Amendment and women’s right to vote. It was the first big demonstration of the Women’s Liberation Movement, and the largest gathering of women protesters in history, until January 21, 2017. The leadership for the strike called the focus to be “The Unfinished Business Of Equality”.

The Women’s Strike For Equality was organized by the National Organization for Women (NOW) and its president Betty Friedan.

At a NOW convention in March 1970, Friedan rallied women to stop working for a day to draw attention to the prevalent problem of unequal pay for women’s work. She then formed and led the National Women’s Strike Coalition to organize the protest, which used “Don’t Iron While The Strike Is Hot!” as its slogan. She asked American women to abandon their husbands, their desks and typewriters, and their service jobs,  to march in the streets of American cities demanding Equal Rights.

The Equal Rights Amendment was being debated in Congress that summer, and women warned politicians to pay attention or risk losing their seats in the next election.

Friedan initially proposed the strike to NOW, but its members were afraid that the protest would be a bust, and that they would be mocked. She continued to develop a strategy despite the negative reaction from the organization she had helped form. The first planning meeting was small and chaotic; discussing possible strategies without any formal organization. As plans progressed, so did the controversy. In the final month leading up to the event, the group was significantly divided into two factions: the young radicals and the “bourgeoisie” founders.

Friedan avoided deep divisions by diversifying, recruiting women and men, liberals and conservatives. She sought a permit from NYC to close Fifth Avenue for the protest. The city refused. They marched anyway.

NYC had the largest protest. 50,000 people marched down Fifth Avenue; others demonstrated at the Statue Of Liberty and another group stopped the stock ticker on Wall Street. The city proclaimed it declaring Equality Day. Police directed them to one lane of traffic, but the protesters filled the street and sidewalks.

Los Angeles had a smaller protest of about 1000. In Washington D.C., women marched down Connecticut Avenue with a banner that read “We Demand Equality” and lobbied for the Equal Rights Amendment. Petitions with more than 1,500 names were presented to the Senate Majority Leader Mike Mansfield, a Democrat from Montana.

Women who worked at the Detroit Free Press kicked men out of one of their restrooms, protesting the fact that men had two bathrooms while women had one.

Women who worked for a New Orleans’ The Times-Picayune newspaper ran pictures of the grooms instead of the brides in engagement announcements.

Women marched in Paris, and Dutch women marched at the U.S. embassy in Amsterdam.

Critics, including many women, called the demonstrators anti-feminine and Communists. The Women’s Strike For Equality made the front page of the failing NY Times, L.A. Times, and Chicago Tribune. It was also the leading story for the three broadcast networks, ABC, CBS, and NBC.  This was before Fox, MSNBC or CNN, and unbelievably, there was no Internet.

The failing NY Times ran a feature titled: “Liberation Yesterday: The Roots Of The Feminist Movement” . Under a photograph of early 20th century suffragettes marching down Fifth Avenue, the paper also asked: “Fifty years ago, they won the vote. Did they throw victory away?”  The article pointed out that the earlier and the then-current Feminist Movements were rooted in work for Civil Rights, Peace and Radical politics, and noted that the Women’s Movement in both eras were intent on recognizing that both black people and women were being treated as second-class citizens.

The article went on to note that “Traditional Groups Prefer to Ignore Women’s Lib“. NY Times:

“The problem for such groups as the Daughters Of The AmericanRevolution (DAR) the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, the League OfWomen Voters, The Junior League and the Young Women’s ChristianAssociation (YWCA) is what attitude to take toward the militant women’s liberation movement with its ridiculous exhibitionists and bands of wild lesbians.”

Bands of wild lesbians! Oh, my!

The article quoted the National Council Of Women:

“There’s no discrimination against women like they say there is. Women themselves are just self-limiting. It’s in their nature and they shouldn’t blame it on society or men.”

The NY Times also noted that Friedan was 20 minutes late for her speech at the Women’s Strike For Equality, with a headline: “Leading Feminist Puts Hairdo Before Strike”.  The article also noted what she wore and where she’d purchased it, and that he had her hair done at the Vidal Sassoon Salon. Friedan’s retort:

“I don’t want people to think Women’s Lib girls don’t care about how they look. We should try to be as pretty as we can. It’s good for our self-image and it’s good politics.”

The article noted:

“The vast majority of women interviewed strongly endorsed the traditional concept of woman as a mother and a homemaker who can, and sometimes even should, supplement these activities with a career or with volunteer work.”

60 women showed up at the reception area of the Katherine Gibbs School to confront the president of the secretarial school, with charges that the school was exploiting a system that kept women in subservient roles in business. They moved on to six advertising agencies to present awards that ironically congratulated them for using degrading images of women and for under-employing women. Among the businesses they visited was that darn NY Times itself.

Friedan, who wrote groundbreaking The Feminine Mystique (1963), said the movement needed “Something big, something so big it will make national headlines”.

The Women’s Strike For Equality made headlines as people marched not just for Gender Equality, but also for the Anti-Vietnam War Movement, the Gay Rights Movement, and the Civil Rights Movement.

In 1971, Congress passed a resolution declaring August 26 to be Women’s Equality Day. One of my earliest heroes, Representative Bella Abzug of NY was so inspired by the Women’s Strike For Equality, she introduced a bill to make Women’s Equality Day a national holiday.

Friedan left this world in 2006 on her 85th birthday. The Feminine Mystique is now considered rather quaint.

Trump Shill Scott Baio Says –“I Don’t Give a Sh*t If I Ever Work Again” (Neither Do We.)

Actor Scott Baio famously spoke at the RNC praising Trump and has gone to bat for the man. (It might have ben his last gig and, well, not to be mean but it’s not as though he gave up an A-List Hollywood career to be a mouthpiece for BLOTUS…)

He is the definition of deplorable after he shared a meme that says that Heather Heyer’s mother Susan Bro is the same person as Donna Soto, the mother of teacher Vicki Soto, who was killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012 in Newtown, Connecticut.

The tweet has been deleted but as one Twitter user says,

“The internet is forever.”

Baio complained to The Hollywood Reporter,

“I don’t give a shit about Hollywood liberals. They’re gonna hate the guy no matter what. If he cured cancer, they’d be on him for putting oncologists out of business. I don’t give a shit if I ever work again. My country comes first. I guess I’m just an old, angry, successful white guy who stole everything he has from someone else.”

Wish granted, says liberal Hollywood.

Sanchez says,

My son teaches me emotions. With my family, they didn’t show affection. We didn’t hug and stuff like that and if we did it was an awkward hug. My son taught me how to do it naturally. It should come to you and not be forced and it should be something that you want to do.

ConDRAGulations, Tyra!
