Rejoice: Fashion Darling Hari Neff to Appear in Mapplethorpe Movie

Congratulations to actress/model/trans activist Hari Neff for landing a role in the upcoming Robert Mapplethorpe biopic. The film, directed by Ondi Timoner, looks at the life of the photographer from his rise to fame in the 1970s to his untimely death in 1989. Hari will play Warhol socialite Tinkerbelle. (There’s a fascinating rundown of Tink’s life and unfortunate death here. And you can see that she actually had a more-than-slight resemblance to Hari).

In addition to Neff, the film stars Dr Who‘s Matt Smith as Mapplethorpe, and Imposters actress Marianne Rendón as Mapplethorpe’s bestie Patti Smith (who is pointedly NOT on board with the project, as she has her OWN Mapplethorpe project in the works, based on her award-winning autobiography Just Kids.)

The movie, though, has the blessing of the Mapplethorpe Foundations, with its president saying,

“The Mapplethorpe Foundation was impressed by Ondi Timoner’s vision for the project and her strengths as an artist. We’re very pleased she has chosen to tell Robert’s story.”

Can’t wait!

Of course if YOU can’t wait, there’s always the WOW/HBO documentary Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures to hold you over until this is released! (You can get it on iTunes here)

Omg, Yes PLEEEEEEEEASE: Ru Wants Willow Smith to Play Him in Upcoming Biographical Series

The ever-iconic RuPaul spoke to the ever-iconic Cindy Adams in today’s “Page Six” about the much buzzed-about TV series in the works about Ru’s early days in New York City.

“Not filmed yet. No title yet. Not cast yet. I won’t play me. It’s maybe Willow Smith.”

Now THAT’S an interesting casting idea. Funny, I had been hoping it would be Jaden, but either Smith kid would be genius. Yes, yes, I’m on board. MORE DETAILS, PLEASE!

“This is about my New York life in the ’80s,” he goes on to explain. “Interview magazine in those days was my Bible. I grew up in San Diego wanting to be Andy Warhol. No grim storyline about white guys sniffing white powder. It’s the Yellow Brick Road. Wanting to go to six different clubs every night.

“Networks are bidding on the project now. A one-hour show is 42 minutes. A streaming service is an hour. Until we know which, we haven’t started shooting. J.J. Abrams is behind it.

And World of Wonder, of course!

He continues:

“Look, I just keep doing my thing. Nothing new or different. More people are discovering me. Maybe it’s social media. Maybe with Netflix I’m now around the world. Maybe young kids look to express how they feel. It’s all make-believe. Drag reminds us not to take identity too seriously.

“There’s a political aspect to looking at what I do. My show represents the fair shake, the promise of America we all hoped for. It’s all about identity. Everyone can be famous. This represents that you can create your own persona. Look, I never expected validation or some form of status quo. There’s no template for what I do.

“I heard of this new Emmy nomination in the dentist’s chair. Headphones on. Getting my teeth cleaned. The hygienist finished then I celebrated with friends on the phone.”

This can’t happen fast enough!

RIP: June Foray, 99, the Voice of Rocky the Squirrel and HUNDREDS of Other Cartoon Characters

A part of my childhood is gone. The marvelous June Foray, who voiced a gazillion cartoon characters throughout her long and celebrated career, has died at age 99. June was most famous, of course, for voicing both Rocky the Squirrel and Natasha in the seminal not-just-for-kids Rocky and Bullwinkle Show (1959-1964). But she was also (*deep breath*)  Cindy Lou Who in How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1966), Grandmother Fa in Mulan, Nell on The Dudley Do-Right Show (1969-1970), Granny in all those Tweety and Sylvester cartoons (1955-2014), Jane on George of the Jungle (1967), Mother Magoo on Mister Magoo (1960-1961), Witch Hazel (1952 for Disney; 1956, 1959, 1966 for Looney Tunes)  Dorothy Gale on the animated series Off to See the Wizard (1967-1968), Wheezy / Lena Hyena in Who Framed Roger Rabbit and on… and on… and on… Check out the more than 300 credits on her IMDB page. It’s pretty astounding.

She was also the voice of the original Chatty Cathy doll by Mattel, and then voiced it’s murderous doppleganger Talky Tina in an episode of The Twilight Zone (see pic, below).

The LA Times also notes that in the 1974 film Jaws, she provided the voices of children on the beach, and on I Love Lucy she mimicked a barking dog

As Times TV critic Robert Lloyd wrote in his appreciation of Foray, what made her distinctive was “a quality of youthfulness even in older characters, like Granny or Witch Hazel, a playfulness that cuts through the phlegm. She had range, literally, going low for Natasha, the semi-seductive Pottsylvanian spy, and high for Rocky, boy squirrel and skeptical hero. Witch Hazel, she said, she made ‘not evil at all.’ ”

In 2012, speaking with her hometown newspaper — the Republican of Springfield, Mass. — Foray summed it up best:

“I love every character I’ve done because there’s a little bit of me in everything I’ve done.”

Must See: Atomic Blonde Goes Nuclear…And That Isn’t A Bad Thing!

We’re deep into the summer movie going season with blockbusters and flops aplenty, and it’s pretty clear things are can only go uphill from here into what is usually a predictable dramatic movie season. Atomic Blonde seems to be one of the films that may come and go but certainly is not forgettable. How could it be? Based on the graphic novel, The Coldest City, this film doesn’t hold anything back.

Starring Charlize Theron as the leggy British MI6 agent, Lorraine Broughton, who’s sent to Berlin (set in 1989), where she’s after some very naughty German boys. Theron saunters around right before the collapse of the Berlin Wall in custom John Galliano and vintage Dior. Looking to meet up with fellow spy, James McAvoy, Theron encounters problems the second she steps off the tarmac looking for the double agent that is double crossing the MI6.

Packed with action sequences, some with music and without, it’s clear that the intended effect is for audiences is to not only hear Theron pack a punch (she does almost all of her own stunts) but to hear her take them as well. One memorable fight scene includes every woman’s best friend while walking home at night: a set of keys. Small touches like these are what will get this film added to plenty of millennial feminists’ movie shelves.

James McAvoy, complete with a fresh buzzcut and mesh tank tops, looks devilishly good as the man you love to hate. The chemistry between McAvoy and Theron is the perfect give and take relationship the two leads have throughout the film which only adds to the cat and mouse game being played on screen. Is McAvoy the double agent? Is he setting up our protagonist for mission’s failure?

Small dislikes include a soundtrack that could have been filled to the brim with more than a few 80s staples. While I appreciate George Michael’s Father Figure, it’s best use was probably not during one of the most dramatic fight scenes. Voices Carry by Til Tuesday didn’t seem to fit within it’s scene. The song’s music video alluded to domestic abuse and any Pop Up Video aficionado will know it just doesn’t fit being utilized during a scene where a woman is being murdered. Hmm.. okay.

The much talked about lesbian sex scene wasn’t as gratuitous as a media outlets made it out to be. Unlike Blue is The Warmest Color, the sex scene was under three minutes with Theron and Sofia Boutella (her small role as a French spy) and sensual as both actresses fondled one another in a bar to the bedroom. A lot of this film was electric and it wasn’t just left up to the romp between the two female characters. It’s no wonder that there’s already talk of a sequel if the box office projections are to be believed.

Overall, Atomic Blonde was worth the wait and without giving too much away, Charlize Theron could very well become a female Bond for a new generation. Especially if she continues kicking ass and taking names…which seems to be business as usual for her.

More Breaking News: Anthony Scaramucci’s Wife Files for Divorce (Guess Why?)

“Multiple sources” are telling Page Six that Anthony “the Mooch” Scaramucci‘s wife Deidre Ball is divorcing him due to his “naked political ambition,”

Ball – who worked as a vice president in investor relations for Scaramucci’s firm SkyBridge Capital – filed for divorce after three years of marriage. Apparently she was “getting fed up with his ruthless quest to get close to President Trump, whom she despises.”

One source told Page Six, “Deidre has left him and has filed for divorce. She liked the nice Wall Street life and their home on Long Island, not the insane world of D.C. She is tired of his naked ambition, which is so enormous that it left her at her wits’ end. She has left him even though they have two children together.”

A second source close to Scaramucci says the two fought over his loyalty to Trump.

The source said, “Deidre is not a fan of Trump, and she hasn’t exactly been on board and supportive of Anthony and his push to get back into the White House.”

The friend added, “Anthony is focusing on his children, his work for the president and the American people. There is nothing more important to him.

“I don’t know who Deidre thought she was marrying but anyone who knows Anthony knows he’s an ambitious man.”

A THIRD source – who may or may not be me – attributes the breakup to Anthony’s obsession with gay pornstar Blake Mitchell. Which may or may not be real.

#BornThisDay: Silent Film Stars, Theda Bara & Clara Bow

Theda Bara by Herman Mishkin

Clara Bow in Hula directed by Victor Fleming (1927)

The It Girl and The Vamp: Today we tell the tale of two Silent Film Era greats.

July 29,1885Theodosia Burr Goodman:

“To be good is to be forgotten. I’m going to be so bad I’ll always be remembered.”

Theda Bara was one of the most popular screen actors of her era and one of filmdom’s original sex symbols. She earned the nickname “The Vamp”, short for vampire, figuratively meaning that she sucked the life out of every male. Soon the term “vamp” became the lingo for any sexually forward woman.

A most glamorous star of the 1910s, Bara continues to be mysterious and inaccessible even today. Only Mary Pickford and Charlie Chaplin were more popular. But, in the 21st century it’s nearly impossible to view her work. Of the more than 40 films she made between 1914 -1926, only three remain.

Her startling image looms large with film fans 90 years after her retirement, and she is the only film star I can think of who is responsible for a word being placed in the dictionary. Songs were written about Theda Bara, postcards and magazines featured her face. Dangling earrings, kohled eyes, languorous looks are still hot today and the catch phrase “Kiss me, you fool!” became part of our public lexicon.

Bara did not end up as a disillusioned, destitute recluse like Clara Bow, with whom she shares a birthday today. In 1921, she married successful director Charles Brabin, a marriage that lasted until her final credits rolled in 1955. The Brabins were wealthy world travelers and Bara’s talents as hostess and gourmet made their Beverly Hills home a favorite of the film community.

Theda Bara was taken by that damn cancer when she was just 69-years-old.

The fact that Bara never spoke on screen makes her especially fascinating and one of the most mysterious figures from the early part of film history. The voices of Mary Pickford, Lon Chaney, Charles Chaplin and Norma Talmadge are available for us to hear, but some stars: Bara, Valentino, Wallace Reid, Constance Talmadge, are silent forever. Theda Bara remains almost invisible as well. It makes me impossibly melancholy that her legacy is crumbling away to dust. Her story would make for a great biopic.

Bara in Cleopatra (1917)

July 29, 1905Clara Bow:

“They yell at me to be dignified. But what are the dignified people like? The people who are held up as examples of me? They are snobs. Frightful snobs  I’m a curiosity in Hollywood. I’m a big freak, because I’m myself!”

I really do understand. I know firsthand the pain and shame of a brilliant acting career cut down by sex scandals, men, drugs, drink and mental problems. My flame also burned out all too soon. I was known briefly, and in a select circle, as the “It Guy”. I was forgotten all too soon, but you can still re-live the magic with my work on Beta, VHS, and DVDs. Sometimes the world is not ready for the heat that we sex symbols produce. Still, I have not yet been buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Indeed, I am living in obscurity in Portland, Oregon, in a house that is little more than a squatter’s shack, with too many dogs and an unhinged, unglued and unzipped husband.

In the 1920s, Clara Bow’s spirit and sex appeal defined a new kind of liberated woman for the flapper era. Bow was Hollywood’s brightest light during this decade. She was known as the “It Girl”, and Clara Bow had “It”. The people she worked with in films wrote that she was full of charm and wit, and a consummate professional.

Bow was an actor of range and depth, but she mostly played manicurists, waitresses and store clerks. Yet, her films helped emancipate young American women from the restrictive morals of their parents. Bow’s characters were unabashed about being attracted to men. Her shop-girl in It (1927) spots her boss’s son and says:

“Oh Santa, get me him!”

Her characters wore their skirts short, bobbed their hair, drank and smoked in public, danced and stayed out all night long. At the apex of her career, Bow received 45,000 fan letters a week. She was the idol of working gals and the dream girl of blue-collar guys.

The It Girl was so hot and bright that it seems inevitable she would burn out personally and professionally. It is shocking to think that her career was over in 1933 when she was just 26-years-old, after she had made millions for her studio, Paramount, and was one of the most recognized stars in the world. But, Bow was condemned by Conservative Christian America and the Hollywood old guard for her questionable morality.

Producer Budd Schulberg in his terrific book Moving Pictures: Memories Of A Hollywood Prince (1981), writes:

“Hollywood was a cultural schizophrene: The anti-movie Old Guard with their chamber music & their religious pageants fighting a losing battle against the more dynamic culture who flaunted the bohemianism of Edna St. Vincent Millay and the socialism of Upton Sinclair. But, there was one subject on which staid old Hollywood establishment and the members of the new culture circle would agree: Clara Bow, no matter how great her popularity, was a low-life and a disgrace to the community.”

Asked to define the maddeningly elusive quality of “It” itself, Bow reportedly confessed, in her notoriously Brooklyn accent: “I ain’t real sure”.

Scandal and talking pictures ruined Bow. She had a breakdown, mostly owed to her inability to conquer her fear of speaking on film, and she had to recover in a sanatorium.

She left films and Hollywood, moving to Nevada with her new husband, cowboy actor Rex Bell. They had two sons, but Clara Bow was battling mental illness. She was a doting mother to her sons, but haunted by her weight gain and cursed with profound depression. Bow was eventually confined to a psychiatric hospital and not allowed to see her children again.

She died of a heart attack in her small bungalow in West L.A. on an early autumn night in 1965 while watching a Gary Cooper film on television. She was only 60-years-old, living in poverty and obscurity.

Most of Bow’s films have been lost. Of her 56 films, silent and sound, only 27 exist in their entirety or in pieces. Only 16 are available on DVD. The remaining films that survive are in the Library Of Congress Film Archive. Her most famous work is in the classic Wings (1929) winner of the very first Academy Award for Best Picture, the only fully silent film to win. Wings also has the distinction of being the first film to show two men kissing, Buddy Rogers and Richard Arlen during the deathbed finale.

Bara and Bow are both buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. I have visited them there. You can too. It is one of my favorite spots in L.A.

#LGBTQ: She’s No Ally –Even Vogue Says “It’s Time to Collectively Give Up on Ivanka Trump”

$

This week when Trump banned all transgender servicepeople from the U.S. military, it was clear (as well all knew) HE didn’t have the back of the LGBTQ community.

Caitlyn Jenner was widely panned for tweeting a query to the POTUS asking why he had betrayed the trans community.

In honor of Pride Month, Ivanka tweeted,

I am proud to support my LGBTQ friends and the LGBTQ Americans who have made immense contributions to our society and economy.

Vogue magazine, who has supported Melania & Ivanka in the pretty/fashionable department, has finally given up on Ivanka too. Michelle Ruiz had this to say about the First Daughter,

Just this June, in honor of Pride Month, the presidential daughter and special assistant to the president pledged to be an ally for the LGBTQ community… That support evidently doesn’t extend to the likely thousands of trans servicepeople (that’s the “T,” in LGBTQIA, Ms. Trump), who signed up to risk their lives on behalf of all Americans and whose careers now hang in the balance. (True to form, President Trump was quick to tweet, but by press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders’s own admission, seems to have no plan for those current trans military members, and according to some theories, he dashed off the ban in an effort to appease his blood-red base. Today, the Department of Justice dealt the LGBTQ community another blow, filing a brief that argues against workplace protections for LGBTQ employees.)

While she fancies herself an “advocate for the education and empowerment of women and girls,” she’s been conspicuously (dead) silent as her father rolled back workplace protections that apply to the gender pay gap and continues to urge (to the point of public shaming) GOP congressmen to defund Planned Parenthood and pass health care bills that would strip coverage from millions of women—not quite a boon to women’s empowerment.

Which begs the question: what political capital? Ivanka Trump has displayed none in her father’s White House—and it’s time to accept that there’s a good chance she never will. To invoke the old cliché, if insanity is repeating the same actions over and over and expecting a different result, it’s time to stop expecting Ivanka will do anything meaningful with her proximity to power. It would be pointless to continue to note her silent opposition to her father’s agenda or paint her as a bastion of virtue amid Steve Bannon’s alt-right swamp. She is not going to save us, or anyone else. And she is not going to stand in Trump’s way as he scandalizes Boy Scouts, or sanctions potentially unconstitutional discrimination from the Oval Office.

I’m with Vogue, I give up on her, too. Not that I ever had any faith. Turns out Tiffany might be the smarter daughter by staying out of politics.

The one positive thing you can say about the Trump administration, it made late night comedy GREAT AGAIN! Add this one to the pantheon off perfect impressions like Alec Baldwin as Trump, Melissa McCarthy as Sean Spicer (RIP) Kate McKinnon as Jeff Sessions (and Kellyanne Conway) and now Mario Cantone as Anthony Scaramucci!

On The President Show, Cantone perfectly captured Scaramucci’s crazed speech and overall “Moochiness”, delivering lines like,

I’ve also seen [Trump] eat a live raccoon, bones and all, and shit out a Siamese housecat.

I’m familiar with some British “chat shows” as they are called. Everyone knows the BBC’s Graham Norton Show but I must admit, I’d never heard of Alan Carr before recently. His talk show was just called Chatty Man. In 2013, he won a BAFTA for the best Entertainment Performance. It first appeared as two pilots in late May 2009 and to date, it has broadcast 181 episodes. The final one ended in May of 2016.

He really got some good “gets” over the years and his gay-friendly relaxed manner is infectious. He offers guests cocktails, like any good host does. Below are interviews with the late Carrie Fisher, Adele, Lady Gaga and our own Mama Ru,

#FirstLook: Fred Savage Plays Gay & Billy Eichner Is Gay (On 3 New Series!)

Friends From College cast L to R: Parisse, Faxon, Key, Smolders, Park, Savage and Eichner, photo from Netflix

A sort of The Big Chill for the 21st century, Friends From College follows in the new tradition of television shows featuring major characters that behave badly, selfishly and are generally disagreeable (and very funny.) This crazy new Netflix series focuses on a group of 40-ish friends who all met at Harvard and are drawn back together when two married members, novelist Ethan, played by the delicious Keegan-Michael Key, and Lisa (Cobie Smulders) move back to NYC where the rest of their gang lives.

Their lives are intertwined in various complicated ways: Ethan and Lisa are sleeping on Marianne’s (Jae Suh Park) couch in Brooklyn until they find a place; Nick (Nat Faxon) and Lisa used to date, so did Ethan and Sam (Annie Parisse). Ethan and Sam are still involved in a decades-long affair. There is a great gay angle: Max, played by cutie-pie Fred Savage is Ethan’s literary agent and Felix, played by openly gay Billy Eichner, is Max’s boyfriend, and also Ethan and Lisa’s fertility doctor.

The same-sex couple are especially intriguing, with Savage and Eichner playing against type. It seems impossible that it has been three decades since Savage played Kevin Arnold on The Wonder Years (1988-1993). He has spent most of his grown-up career producing and directing comedy series like It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, Modern Family and 2 Broke Girls. On Friends From College, Savage is given a chance here to prove he is a multi-faceted comic actor. His Max is sweet and charming, as well as persuasive and self-centered (like the rest of the group). Savage gives a stand-out performance in his first gay role and he is matched by an uncharacteristically toned-down Eichner.

In a recent guest column in Variety, the showbiz daily, Eichner wrote about how much more work there is still to be done when it comes to LGBTQ characters on television. He should know, he also stars in the delightfully demented Difficult People for Hulu, created by his friend Julie Klausner and produced by Amy Poehler. Klausner and Eichner play two struggling and jaded comedians living in NYC, who, like the characters in Friends From College, are delightfully obnoxious and selfish. One of the things Eichner loves about his character on Difficult People, is that he’s shown to be a “fully formed man”. Eichner:

“I’m not neutered in any way, and I’m not just the wacky neighbor or some angel-martyr figure that’s giving everyone else advice. But at the same time, I’m not some cartoonishly horny friend of a friend that pops in every once in a while, you know, because gay men love sex so much. I’m all of those things and I’m also sad, and I’m also struggling with my family, struggling with my career, struggling with a lack of self-awareness and narcissism, while also trying to be funny and enjoy life at the same time.”

There’s also Eichner’s frenetic, zany game show Billy On The Street, where on each episode, he goes out to the streets of NYC and asks pedestrians questions about pop culture. it is currently filming a sixth season. It is seen on TruTV with past seasons now streaming on Hulu.

On the new season of the delicious Difficult People, which begins on August 8, Julie (Klausner) and Billy (Eichner) are still each other’s best friends while still their own worst enemies. Julie embarks on a quest for happiness after she learns that if she tries to up her anti-depressants anymore, her blood will turn to mush. She ends up trying anything and everything from meditation to Ayahuasca. Billy falls hard for his first real boyfriend (hottie John Cho). Julie’s mother Marilyn, played by the great Andrea Martin, lands a book deal, and Arthur (James Urbaniak) starts commuting to the Burt Reynolds Dinner Theatre in Jupiter, Florida, where his job at PBS has moved all of its production.

Check them out for fun summer viewing!

#LGBT: Posting Pics of Corporal Klinger on Social Media Is NOT Helping Trans People in the Military

When we talk about trans folks in the military, Corporal Klinger is NOT your best option. He’s a beloved character true, but as LGBTQ Nation said in a recent post,

Maybe it’s a bit ‘Milkshake Duck’ here, but if you are comparing Klinger to trans people, you may be implying either subterfuge or insanity. You are equating trans people with being “men in dresses” who are trying to be deceptive and have a mental disorder.

Klinger was a character initially written as a man who did NOT want to be in the army. He was continually pulling stunts to get a Section 8 discharge, which while is no longer in use, was for soldiers deemed mentally unfit for duty. Klinger was created supposedly after M.A.S.H. writers heard stories of Lenny Bruce cross-dressing to dodge service.

The long-running cross-dressing is played as a joke, with Klinger usually the butt. Some see Klinger as a subversive character “getting away” with cross-gender presentation.

But Klinger was one of the few glimmers of trans ANYTHING on TV in the 1970s, along with Jodie Dallas on Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman.

There were allies who meant well, I suppose, but honestly there are real trans troops out there, let’s show them some respect. Give the Klinger memes a rest.

But if you disagree, feel free to discuss on WOW’s Facebook.

Miami Drag Queen Who Supports Trump Says She’s Been “Blackballed” – “Nobody Is Hiring Me”

Lancaster with Melania Trump in 2009

After Trump said this week that transgender service members could no longer serve in the military, LGBTQ set social media ablaze condemning the President’s move. Activists throughout Florida raged, some blaming Trump voters in the trans community like Caitlyn Jenner and Miami drag queen Elaine Lancaster Davis.

Wire magazine publisher Rafa Carvajal posted on Facebook, angry about Lancaster’s longtime vocal support of Trump,

And this is the president Elaine Lanfraudster so vocally supports and constantly defends on Twitter. Shameful!

Lancaster, aka James Davis was on a CNN panel saying he had been “blackballed” for openly supporting Trump. Davis also told the Miami Herald,

I come from a community that touts that we are so inclusive, we are so embracing of what’s different, all we ask for is tolerance and equality. I make a living as a female impersonator in the state of Florida. I have hosted all the major events — White Party for 19 years.

When I came out as a supporter of Trump, I was blackballed instantly. They got online campaigns. I was thrown off the [White Party] committee. I couldn’t be the emcee anymore. I got death threats. I have lawsuits pending against people. Oh, it’s horrible.

I really don’t know what to say. I have to process it. I think he should expand freedoms and equality instead of restricting them. If transgender people want to serve in the military, they should be allowed to.

I feel for people who are transgender and currently serving who may be asked to vacate their posts. But I would hope they would be given honorable discharges.”

Dale Wilson, aka, Power Infiniti said,

It’s very clear to anyone who God gave the brain of a billy goat to that [Trump] doesn’t give a shit about us. But yet they, the ‘Roaches for Raid,’ will go and march and stand up for this man who won’t be bothered by them. That just irks me.

Elaine wants to go and cry and paint herself as a victim when the entire SAGA [Sexuality And Gender Acceptance] community is suffering, little by little, by this president and his administration. Yet we should be concerned for her. She is not the only gay person who supported Trump. But she has made such an effort to paint herself as the token idiot for the village idiot. Of course, things come back to her because she’s the loudest mouth.”

Davis said that the animosity has been building long before Wednesday’s announcement,

The community members should have rallied around and said, ‘What can we do to calm this down?’ Instead, they stayed out of the way and allowed this to fester and boil over.

I don’t have anybody who’s hiring me right now.”

Lancaster was on the Real Housewives of Miami and has been photographed at Mar-a-Lago and with first lady Melania Trump on the set of Celebrity Apprentice. She says the hate is not directed at him simply because he likes the president,

It’s not just because I support Trump, because many others do, too. It’s because they don’t like Elaine Lancaster. They’re jealous of her because of her success and perhaps she thinks a little too highly of herself.

Even friends of hers, like Jon Welsh, a Care Resource employee who has worked with Davis at the White Party says Davis is a bit much,

She could do a lot more to be nicer to people, too. She’s no Princess Diana, honey… she might be a lot of things, but her work ethic — I admire that. Just suck it up. Just show up. And you’re smiling and you’re there to the very end. I don’t agree with all she says politically, but I admire her personally.

Lancaster has doubled down on his support for Trump and says the controversy shows a growing intolerance,

Now, they say, ‘Oh, we can’t have Elaine, she’s too controversial. And I know that from my phone not ringing. Have I been called for one thing for Swim Week? No. Art Basel? I can’t announce anything on social media that’s coming up because they’ll call and get me fired. That’s not America. The oppressed is now the oppressor.

But Carvajal says he doesn’t feel sorry for Davis,

It is not fair to discriminate against someone. But it is fair to choose who you support or don’t support based on their views. And you cannot have it both ways. You cannot for years claim to be an LGBTQ leader and then openly and vocally support someone who wants to take away the rights of the LGBTQ community.

What he said. If you ask me, someone is a LOT like the person they support; they crave publicity, positive or negative. Of course you are free to support Trump, but don’t expect an easy time from an LGBTQ community that’s under attack from his administration.

#BornThisDay: Writer / Director, Colin Higgins

Higgins in 1974 sitting on a hot tub built just for him by famed carpenter Harrison Ford

July 30, 1941– Colin Higgins is a much loved director and screenwriter. From people that I know who have made his acquaintance, he was supposedly a real sweetheart. People in showbiz all seemed to have adored him. He is responsible for one of the most influential films of my youth, Harold And Maude (1971). I really love him for that.

Born on the South Pacific island of New Caledonia to an Australian mother and an American father, Higgins moved with his family to Southern California from Sydney in the 1950s. He attended Stanford University for a year, but he dropped out to hitchhike across the country. Higgins’ travels took him to NYC where he studied with the famous Actors Studio and then to Europe where he volunteered for the Army as the sports reporter for the military newspaper The Stars And Stripes. He eventually returned to school, attending Stanford University, receiving a degree in English and then he attended film school at UCLA. During his final year there, he wrote a little screenplay titled Harold And Maude.

Now it is considered to be one of the greatest of 1970 era Hollywood films, but Harold And Maude, smartly directed by Hal Ashby, was a huge flop when it opened during the Christmas season of 1971 with little fanfare and not much advertising. It’s an unusual story of the romance between a young man and a much, much, much older woman, played to perfection by Bud Cort and my muse Ruth Gordon, the film has had a huge impact on people my age, and although it bombed initially, it has become a cult favorite around the world.

Higgins was just a 30 years old, and ready to give up on his acting dreams, supporting himself as a pool cleaner and tennis-court sweeper in Hollywood when he managed to get his landlord, film producer Ed Lewis, to read a screenplay he had adapted from that master’s thesis for the UCLA screenwriting program. Lewis showed the script to Paramount’s Robert Evans, who agreed to make Harold And Maude.

Higgins also published a novelization of the screenplay, including some scenes that didn’t make it into the film. He had really wanted to direct the film himself and shot some test scenes for Paramount, but the studio gave it to Ashby, an experienced film editor who had just received glowing notices for his first feature, the quirky The Landlord (1970).

Higgins’ own 1980 stage adaptation of Harold And Maude ran for just nine performances on Broadway starring film great Janet Gaynor and gay actor Keith McDermott, but  a French language version ran in Paris for seven years.

Higgins went on to write and direct some of the most successful films of the 1970s and 1980s: the screwball romance Silver Streak (1976) with  Gene WilderRichard Pryor, and Jill ClayburgFoul Play (1978) starring Goldie Hawn and Chevy Chase; the especially adored by the gays: 9 To 5 (1980) featuring the terrific team of Jane FondaLily TomlinDolly Parton and Dabney Coleman, plus the musical The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas (1982) with Parton and Burt Reynolds.

Higgins had long planned both a sequel and a prequel to Harold And Maude. The sequel, Harold’s Story, focused on Harold’s life after Maude. The prequel would show Maude’s life before Harold and was titled Grover And Maude with a story about Maude learning how to steal cars from Grover Muldoon, the character portrayed by Pryor in Higgins’ Silver Streak. Higgins arranged for all the original actors to reprise their roles.

Higgins established a foundation which offers The Colin Higgins Courage Awards which recognizes ordinary but remarkable individuals who have endured overwhelming hostility and hate, yet have handled themselves with the grace as they educate and enlighten others about being gay. Each winner receives $10,000 as part of their prize. The Colin Higgins Foundation also funds scholarships for gay people wanting to study film and supports HIV prevention programs in places that really need them like as Fayetteville, Arkansas and Biloxi, Mississippi.

In 1986, he had just completed a mini-series based on Shirley MacLaine‘s memoir Out On A Limb, when he was snatched away by the plague. I wonder how many other terrific films he might have made for us, maybe something tasty and inventive for Netflix. Fucking HIV.

#LifeBall: Inge Prader Reimagines Gustav Klimt Paintings in SPECTACULAR Photos

Gustav Klimt, Death and Life, 1910. Above is Prader’s reimagining with the addition of the artist and friend? Assistant? Lover?

For this year’s Life Ball in Vienna, photographer Inge Prader has stunningly reinterpreted the paintings of Gustav Klimt. Intricately crafted costumes, sets and props, along with carefully posed models bring to (still) life some of Klimt’s most iconic works. Gorgeous warriors and women are posed along with semi-nude figures, set against detailed mosaic backdrops, many in Klimt’s signature gold.

It’s easy to say, ‘Oh, yeah, beautiful’ and keep moving. But look again at the detail. These are not exact recreations, they are reimagined, and they are SPECTACULAR.

#TrueStory: Troye Sivan Stalked/ Cruised By a Fan in the Middle of the Night –Leaves AirBnb Early

Troy Sivan posted this scary story about a persistent fan. The Reader’s Digest version is a gay fan noticed him and rang the bell later at night and then left notes to endear himself to Sivan. It didn’t work,

“Hi, I’m gay. This is my number for when you want to call me. You know I like you a lot.

Maybe you’ve already seen me, and I see you very often and I love you, very handsome baby.”

Then Danny (who might be Latin?) switches to Spanish, adding that he’s 24 years old. (Sivan was born in South Africa and grew up in Australia)

Well, he left his AirBnB early and FYI fans out there, Sivan’s taken. His boyfriend Jacob Bixenman (whose Twitter handle is @gwynethpaltbro) took the above shot.

Read the story below, it’s a little more menacing the way he tells it…
