#BornThisDay: Fashion Designer, Valentino

Photograph by Alex de Brabant

May 11, 1932Valentino Clemente Ludovico Garavani:

“I love my beauty. It’s not my fault.”

I have always had a hard time wrapping my head around the notion of why it would be so difficult to come out of the closet if you were a successful fashion designer. It is similar to denying being gay as a chorus boy, event planner or professional figure skater.

It’s no surprise that of the many great gay fashion designers to have chosen to be open about their gayness: Marc Jacobs, Gianni Versace, Tom Ford, Dolce & Gabbana, Giorgio Armani, it would be Valentino who would be the last to come out of that closet. I suppose being on the leading edge has never been the style of the designer who burst on the fashion scene in 1959 and quickly established himself as the favorite of the ladies who lunch.

The “secret that is not a secret”, is what Valentino’s partner in business and in life for 50 years, Giancarlo Giammetti, called it in a feature on the designer published in Vanity Fair in 2004.

With Giammetti, photograph by Jonathan Becker

In July 1960, Valentino met young Giammetti at the Café de Paris in Rome and they have rarely been apart since. Giammetti claims if you added up the days they have spent apart since meeting, it amounts to only two months. It is by all accounts, a testy, yet affectionate relationship. Giammetti had run the business side of Valentino’s fashion house until their retirement in 2008.

Giammetti:

“Ours is not a story of money or fashion. It was a story of love. There has never been an article about us in this sense. I think the world has changed a lot and that once it would have been embarrassing to read but it’s not anymore.”

Valentino:

“Giancarlo and I understand each other, but his character is the opposite of mine. There are only three things that I know how to do: make a dress, decorate a house and receive guests …”

Giammetti:

“We were lovers for 22 years. Now it’s a fraternal love, a relationship with nothing sexual in it. Yet a great love remains, ancient, surviving.”

Although they are open about being gay, Valentino and Giammetti are prudish in their perceptions. Bruce Hoeksema, Valentino’s current boyfriend and assistant for the past 20 years:

“When Giancarlo sees amale couple kissing in a restaurant he says, ‘Disgusting!’. If he sees two men holding hands on the street, he yells out ‘Queers!’.”

At the end of 2011, The Valentino Garavani Virtual Museum was launched, serving as a resource for the life and works of Valentino.

In 2012, he was awarded the Commandeur De L’ordre Des Arts Et Des Lettres medal, France’s highest artistic honor.

Mostly retired from designing for his Valentino label, he still works on special commissions. He designed Anne Hathaway’s wedding dress in 2012 and, more recently, the bridal gown of Princess Madeleine of Sweden in June 2013.

Yesterday afternoon, when I should have been directing my own staff working in the garden, I caught Matt Tyrnauer‘s extremely engaging, often hilarious documentary Valentino: The Last Emperor (2008), currently available on Netflix, as I tried to get pumped for this #BornThisDay post. Watching the diminutive, grandly coiffed, hidden-eyed, orange-tinted, ill-tempered, impatient absolute despot Valentino was like enjoying chocolate and Cognac until that instant comes when you find that you are queasy from having consumed too much richness.

Although Giammetti and Valentino broke-up in 1972, they live together in a sort of big extended family along with boyfriends, ex-boyfriends, ex-boyfriends’ wives and children, assorted minor European royalty, hangers-on and lackeys.

We must have lots of things in common; we are, after all, gay men of a certain age. Let’s see: Valentino travels exclusively on his own airplane and yachts with a full entourage; I ride a bike. He owns extraordinary homes in Rome, London, NYC, Gstaad, Tuscany and a castle in the countryside outside of Paris; I live a Post-Apocalyptic Bohemia life in Portland, Oregon. One of the very few things we actually have in common: Valentino adores dogs. He named a second line of designer clothing for canines after his late pug Oliver. Today Valentino has piles of pugs: Molly, Milton, Monty, Margot, Maude and Maggie. When traveling on his 14-seat jet, three cars are needed to move Valentino and his pack to and from the airport: one to move Valentino and his BF, another for the luggage and the staff, and one to transport the pugs. I make my terriers carry their own poop-bags.

Which of These Wildly Expensive Shoes Will You Buy Me?

Let’s go shoe shopping! Your treat! I have a birthday or something coming up soon. Probably. I’ve done most of the legwork already. I see a number of options on the Nordstrom’s website. All wildly expensive, as I’ve mentioned, and kiiiiiind of hideous – in the way that only Gucci can be fabulous and awful at the same time. It’s completely your choice which you want to buy me, though. I promise. Let’s  peruse our options.

#1.

The first is Gucci’s “Ilse Sock Sandal,” which, at just $1,190 is a STEAL. Writes Nordstroms:

Add a little something extra to your look with a streamlined take on the sock-with-sandals trend that highlights glossy finishes and luscious red leather.

It vaguely looks like somebody amputated the foot of a blow-up sex doll, but I suppose that’s the appeal. What do you think? Is it for me?

#2.

Yes, the “Gucci Gladiator Loafer” is officially a THING. And while I gasped in horror when I saw it, it’s slowly growing on me. Like a fungus. But I reeeeeeeeally think I need it for summer. At $1,890 it’s the priciest of the three. So there’s that to think of when purchasing it for me. Am I worth it?

and finally #3

The Peggy platform sneaker by Gucci. It’s only $950, which makes it the obvious choice, but I have to say it’s my least favorite option. And let me explain why: Sure it’s pretty rad, and back in the day I would have thrown my granny off the balcony for a pair. But I’ve done platform sneakers before. I practically lived in them in the ’90s. And you know the rule: If you’ve experienced a trend the first time around, you can’t revisit when it’s revived. Otherwise it would look like I’m just one of those tragic old people stuck in the decade they were last fabulous in. So, if you MUST get these for me, I’ll smile and say thank you, but secretly wish you bought me one of the other ones.

So which will it be?

Sean Hannity Airily Dismisses the Growing Trump/Russian Scandal, But Here Are 57 Reasons Why It’s Probably Real

Trump’s #1 fan Sean Hannity, speaking on his Fox News show last night, declared he has had ENOUGH of you “deranged liberal crackpots” who are trying to bring his best bud down. In fact, he’s CONVINCED this whole Russian mess is merely a bizarre conspiracy theory fabricated by the left and part of what he calls “Trump Derangement Syndrome.”

“Deranged liberal crackpots are at it again,” he said, “and they’re using President Trump’s decision ― very important decision ― to fire the now former FBI director to push all kinds of brand-new, completely insane, bizarre conspiracy theories.”

“There is zero evidence, so far, that Donald Trump ― his campaign, his transition ― ever colluded with the Russians,” he said. “It is a bizarre conspiracy theory.”

He accused Democrats of having a selective memory for attacking Comey previously, but showing anger at Trump’s decision to fire him.

“There is no getting through to these tinfoil hat conspiracy liberals. On the left, they’re detached from reality. They’re oblivious to truth today,” Hannity said. “It’s time to diagnose them with what it is: Trump derangement syndrome.”

Yeah, dude. Whatever.

Buddy Pope, a commenter on HuffPo listened to what Sean had to say, then rather cheekily responded:

“I don’t know – it’s hard for me to see any Trump ties to Russia, except for…

NYC-based singer/songwriter Shea Diamond is sending a powerful message of hope in her new video for song Seen It. In collaboration with It Gets Better Project– the worldwide movement inspiring changes and support for LGBT youth who are bullied, Diamond waxes on the women who enlivened her, including Nina Simone and Patti Labelle, her incarceration, and the hard road she travelled to become the woman, and voice she is today. Watch below! (via Out)

Shea Diamond:

“I knew, at a very young age, I loved to sing. My voice was effeminate and I remember feeling afraid to sing in the church choir. The fear of my own voice left me feeling like an outcast.

No longer able to hide my truth, I ran away from home at 14 years old, becoming a temporary ward of the state. I grew tired of the shuffle from foster home to foster home, so at 17, I was emancipated and sought out independent living. Desperate to find the financial means to transition to my true gender, I committed a crime in 1999 and was sentenced to 10 years in a men’s prison. I was afraid that I could possibly die in a prison system designed to ensure correctional jobs over human lives.

While incarcerated, I spent time talking to other like-minded women of trans experience about their stories. It was because of these women and the community I was a part of in prison where I really found my voice. I was locked up but my mind was free!”

Miley Cyrus Just Blessed the World with a Music Video for Her New Single “Malibu”

Former Disney moppet and Drag Race superfan Miley Cyrus just released a dreamy, stripped-down new single “Malibu” and the children are LIVING.

In an interview with Billboard magazine, she spoke about the inspiration for the song (hint: His name rhymes with Niam Memsworth)

“I needed to change so much,” she says. “And changing with someone else not changing like that is too hard. Suddenly you’re like, ‘I don’t recognize you anymore.’ We had to re-fall for each other.”

Cyrus also shared that this upcoming album is entirely on her terms.

“I know exactly where I am right now. I know what I want this record to be. And not in the sense of manipulation—wanting something from my fans or the audience, like some slimy thing—’How do I get attention?’ I never thought about that.”

She continued, “This record is a reflection of the fact that yes, I don’t give a f–k. But right now is not a time to give a f–k about people. I’m giving the world a hug and saying, ‘Hey, look. We’re good, I love you.’ And I hope you can say you love me back.”

Watch the Diane Martel-directed video below.

And yes that’s some really great hair. It stings a bit to say that because when I had similar hair in the ’90s I was just called a lazy drug addict and told to fix my damn roots. But times change. And what was once derided is now celebrated. I get it. So carry on, Miley. I’m fine knowing I paved the way for you.

#Breaking: FBI Raid Underway In Annapolis –The First of Many Trump-Russia Warrants Being Executed

According to the Palmer Report as well as the Washington Post and multiple news sources, in the wake of Trump’s firing of FBI Director James Comey to try to sabotage the Trump-Russia investigation –as a number of political insiders predicted last night– the FBI struck back in a major way today.

Yes, the FBI just raided a GOP fundraising firm in Annapolis. The word is now that this is just one of numerous Trump-Russia warrants that are being executed.

One of the insiders whose sources correctly pointed to today’s FBI action is Democratic insider Claude Taylor. In the wake of the Annapolis raid, he’s now sharing the following:

“Source in legal community reports large number of Warrants from Eastern District of Virginia being executed. Source reports frenzy of activity inside the EDVA, large number of agents, US Marshals. The battle has been joined.

The basement of the EDVA was described as resembling a ‘judicial Armada’ with a dozen or more FBI and US Marshals vans,” Taylor states. He goes on to add that the name of the GOP firm that was served with Warrant in Annapolis is Strategic Campaign Group”. Palmer Report has not been able to independently confirm that Strategic Campaign Group is the one being raided, and the original report of the raid from NBC affiliate WBAL did not mention the name of the firm being raided.”

There are multiple Republican Party fundraising firms in Annapolis. But it is worth noting that Strategic Campaign Group has received scrutiny from the Federal Election Commission in the past. Its website says.

“Today, Strategic Campaign Group is the largest provider of Telephone Town Hall technology for Republican campaigns and conservative organizations in the United States.”

This group is reportedly has ties to former Trump campaign manager, Paul Manfort.

This is a developing story…

Intriguing new documentary called Finding Kim (produced and directed by Aaron Bear) which follows the journey of a trans man who transitions at age 50, and includes interviews with various friends of WOW like Dan Savage, Calpernia Addams, Carmen Carrera, Buck Angel and more.

FINDING KIM, an honest, intimate and inspiring documentary that follows three years of a transgender man’s journey as he transitions from female to male, makes its highly-anticipated debut in 15 cities, including New York and Los Angeles, on June 1 and becomes available on Digital platforms on June 6, 2017, from Random Media. The groundbreaking film showcases the incredible and honest story
of a truly remarkable individual managing the beginnings of gender re-assignment. Documenting the entire process including top surgery, it navigates the delicate world of friendships and the torment of what to tell one’s family; finally offering the chance to share joy as Kim experiences life the way he always felt he should: as a happy, confident, human being.

Captured by documentary filmmakers Aaron Bear and Gabriel Bienczycki, FINDING KIM is a journey of self-discovery and self-acceptance. Set in the backdrop of progressive Seattle, the film features insights, advice and real-life experience from Dan Savage, Carmen CarreraCalpernia Addams, Buck Angel and more.

The film’s message is one that speaks beyond gender. It’s about knowing and understanding oneself and who one truly is as an individual.   It unveils Kim’s story in the most organic way possible while staying true to the documentary filmmaking process.

The film covers the most intimate parts of Kim’s life, including his top- surgery, struggles and moments of happiness. To capture this, Bear and Bienczycki interviewed the individuals closest to Kim, discovering their thoughts on his process and how the transition affects their relationship.  The film also includes others who have gone through the process of gender reassignment.

Ultimately their goal is to allow audiences to walk away with a new outlook on gender.

“By the time I’m 50,” says Kim, “I want to be legally a man. I want to have facial hair. I want to have lost weight. And I want to feel good.”

As we watch his physical journey and his journey of self-acceptance unfold, we see him achieving those goals. Near the end of the trailer, a clearly contented Kim sighs:

“I’m a 50-year-old man. And that’s awesome. I never wanted to be a 50-year-old woman. Now I don’t have to be.”

Steve Harvey Sends Shocker Memo to Staff “Do Not Wait In the Hallway To Speak To Me… Do Not Attempt To Walk With Me”

Talk show host, Steve Harvey came under fire yesterday after a strongly worded memo was sent to the staff of his daytime talk show was leaked by a blogger Robert Feder.

In the note the host asks that there be no attempts to meet with him while he’s in his dressing room, in the makeup chair, or in the hallway –

“unless I ask to speak with you directly.”

(See below) He wrote, in all caps.

“IF YOU OPEN MY DOOR, EXPECT TO BE REMOVED.

My security team will stop everyone from standing at my door who have the intent to see or speak to me.”

Asked about the memo, leaked yesterday, Harvey said,

I could not find a way to walk from the stage to my dressing room, to sit in my makeup chair, to walk from my dressing room to the stage or to just sit and have lunch without somebody just walking in. I’ve always had a policy where, you know, you can come and talk to me –so many people are great around here, but some of them just started taking advantage of it.

I’m in the hallway, I’m getting ambushed by people with friends that come to the show and having me sign this and do this. I just said, ‘Wait a minute, And in hindsight, I probably should’ve handled it a little bit differently.

I just didn’t want to be in this prison anymore where I had to be in this little room, scared to go out and take a breath of fresh air without somebody approaching me, so I wrote the letter. I don’t apologize about the letter.”

Steve Harvey will end its run in Season 5. His new syndicated daytime series titled Steve, will debut in September.

It’s a RAVE! Metro Weekly Says Trixie Mattel Strikes Gold with “Two Birds”

Metro Weekly‘s music reviewer was initially shocked! – shocked, I tell you! – when presented with a COUNTRY ALBUM from a former RuPaul’s Drag Race girl

Writes Sean Maunder:

That may not have been such a surprise to the fans who have seen Trixie Mattel sing live or who follow her Instagram, but the rest of us can go ahead and take a moment to pick ourselves up off the floor. Even more surprising, Mattel’s Two Birds (★★★★★) is really, really good. Not to cast any shade, but with a handful of exceptions, the musical output of Drag Race alumni could generously be described as uneven. Two Birds, with neither a hint of autotune nor a single joke about tucking, is an odd — and more than welcome — addition to the canon.

He then proceeds to gush over each track (a favorite being “Mama Don’t Make Me Put on that Dress Again” which  “walks the line between upbeat and sentimental, its poignant lyrics sung with a grin and set to an upbeat tune you could dance along to in a pair of cowboy boots…)

He then ends the review with THIS:

Two Birds is not just good for a Ru girl. It’s a legitimately enjoyable country album, one that can be listened to over and over again. Even if you’ve never been on the Drag Race wagon, you owe it to yourself to at least give Two Birds a spin. There are no prerequisites required, no irony-drenched inside jokes or ham-fisted references to the show. Just sincere, heartfelt songwriting that’s sure to pull on the heartstrings of any queer kid who grew up listening to country and never thought they would hear themselves in it.

And if you haven’t gotten your copy yet, Two Birds is available for purchase at Amazon.com and iTunes, and on Spotify and other streaming services.

#BornThisDay: Katharine Hepburn

In Summertime (1955)

May 12, 1907Katharine Hepburn:

“I have not lived as a woman. I have lived as a man. I’ve just done what I damn well wanted to, and I’ve made enough money to support myself, and ain’t afraid of being alone.”

Writer Gore Vidal vouched for his buddy Scotty Bowers who claims that he set Katharine Hepburn up on dates “with over 150 different women” in his dishy, juicy book Full Service: My Adventures In Hollywood And The Secret Sex Lives Of Stars, which I read in just two sittings in 2012. Vidal had flown in to LA to be part of Bowers’ book release event. He wanted to assure attendees that Bowers is totally telling the truth in his tell-all memoir. In a speech, he told party-goers he’s never caught Bowers in a lie in the 60+ years he’s known him, noting that in Hollywood: “you can meet 1,000 liars a day”. I think there is a difference between never catching someone in a lie as opposed someone who has never told a lie, so I am going to take Vidal and Bowers at their word: Hepburn was very sexually active with women. I have also been told by several people in the biz that Hepburn really did dig the girls. I am certain this post will spark some outrage, but let’s go ahead and open-up her closet door a bit, shall we?

If you don’t wish to believe Bower’s version, try film historian and novelist William J. Mann‘s highly readable Kate: The Woman Who Was Hepburn (2004). Mann claims that the famous romance between Hepburn and Spencer Tracy was a tale tended by Hepburn to hide both of their bisexuality. The two stars were, in fact, sexually complicated screen legends that had an enduring companionship, but they were only romantic for a brief moment and never lived together intimately.

Hepburn helped keep alive the story that she and Tracy could never marry because he was a devout Catholic committed to his wife of 43 years and the mother of their deaf child. Mann used letters and interviews with people who wouldn’t talk while Hepburn was alive. Who can blame them? Who would want this formidable woman as an enemy?

Mann reports that Hepburn’s notorious relationship with American Express heiress Laura Harding wasn’t exactly “lesbian”, but it certainly was sexual. Mann:

“Hepburn admitted as much to friends like James Prideaux, cutting him off with a shrill  ‘Of course!’ when he asked about Harding … as if the subject of their love affair were simply too obvious and boring to belabor.”

In the 1930s, Hepburn dared to challenge the male studio execs that controlled her career and she made it work for her. She became a businessperson, negotiating a better salary and better roles at a time when that sort of thing just wasn’t done. She was a true American original who could accomplish anything, and a role model for women.

1933, Photograph by Bettmann

Hepburn’s career spanned six decades. Her range was astounding, especially considering that the roles were always secondary to her own personality.

Was there ever a gayer film than Stage Door (1937) where Hepburn as an ingénue utters the famous line: “The calla lilies are in bloom again”? Cast alongside Gay Icons Eve Arden, Lucille Ball, Ann Miller and Ginger Rogers, Hepburn played it broadly and autobiographically, as the daughter of a wealthy businessman who wants a career in the theater with no prior training. It remains one of my favorite Hepburn performances.

Hepburn was terrific in screwball comedies like Bringing Up Baby (1938) with Cary Grant who utters the famous line: “I’ve turned gay all of a sudden!” Hepburn inadvertently developed an androgynous image in such roles as the cross-dressing Sylvia Scarlet (1935).

In the late 1930s, after being badmouthed by studio brass and being branded “box-office poison” by the press, Hepburn refused to be ignored.  She returned to the stage, starring on Broadway in Philip Barry‘s The Philadelphia Story (1939). Barry wrote the play specifically for Hepburn, who not only played the lead role, but also financed it, giving up her salary in return for a percentage of the play’s profits. It was a great success. Hoping to create a perfect film vehicle for herself which would erase the nasty label, Hepburn accepted the film rights to the play as a gift from Howard Hughes. She then convinced MGM studio chief Louis B. Mayer to buy them from her for only $250,000 in return for Hepburn having her choice of producer, director, screenwriter and casting. She chose her gay best friend George Cukor to direct. He knew how to use her and he brought out her best qualities. More than any other female star of that era, Hepburn controlled her own career.

In the 1940s and 1950s, Hepburn launched a classical stage and screen career, transitioning perfectly at a point in her career when other actors might retreat to predictable projects that would showcase them. She took on Shakespeare roles onstage in her 50s, at the same time becoming the First Lady Of American Film. She was eventually nominated for 12 Academy Awards, winning four times, at the time a record (Meryl Streep has had 20 nominations, but only three wins).

In the 1950s, risking guilt by association, Hepburn bravely stood by her good friends Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall during the trials of the Hollywood 10: screenwriters, actors and directors called before Senator Joseph McCarthy‘s House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) in protest of the unconstitutional Senate investigations into Communists in Hollywood. Together, Hepburn and Bogart made The African Queen (1951), which is not a bio-flick about RuPaul.

She had a career that lasted 66 years. Hepburn appeared in 44 films, eight made for television movies, along with 33 plays. Her film career included a wide range of genres: Screwball Comedies, Period Dramas, and adaptations of works by the greatest playwrights.

Hepburn is also most certainly a Fashion Icon also. She pioneered the wearing of trousers at a time when it was radical for women to do so. She received a lifetime achievement award from the Council Of Fashion Designers Of America in 1986 in recognition of her influence in women’s fashion.

Hepburn is a true Gay Icon. She was a tough-minded, authority bunking, liberal thinker. Gay men and women love her equally, if for very different reasons. Even if she didn’t acknowledge her own gayness, it is impossible to ignore Hepburn’s impact on gay culture and gay hearts. Hepburn was fierce.

“If you obey all of the rules, you miss all of the fun.”

I only saw her live once, in LA circa 1971, playing famed fashion designer Coco Chanel in a mess of a musical, Coco, with a book and lyrics by Alan J. Lerner and music by Andre Previn, with sets by gay Cecil Beaton, choreographed by gay Michael Bennett. To prepare for the role, Hepburn received singing coaching from MGM’s gay musical producer Roger Edens. She was simply brilliant and breathtaking in the role. I loved her in the show and ran out to purchase the cast album immediately. I do a terrific imitation of Hepburn singing the title song. Ask me to do it sometime.

In Martin Scorsese‘s Howard Hughes bio-pic, The Aviator (2004), Hepburn was portrayed by another great actor, Cate Blanchett, who won the Academy Award for her uncanny performance. As far as my research can find, this is the only time a film portrayal of an Oscar winning actor became an Oscar winning role.

1977

My favorite Hepburn performance is in Love Among The Ruins (1975) opposite Laurence Olivier, although I have studied every moment of The Philadelphia Story (1940). The Husband’s choice is The Lion In Winter (1968). What is your favorite Katharine Hepburn performance?

#NewMusic: Megan Mullally’s New Band, Nancy And Beth

When you think of Megan Mullally, you probably go right to her portrayal of the ferocious, rich, cocktail swilling socialite, Karen Walker, on the Emmy Award-winning sitcom, Will & Grace (1998 to 2006). She received seven consecutive Emmy nominations for that series, winning twice in 2000 and 2006, giving her more nominations and more wins than any of the actors on the show. She also received seven consecutive Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations, winning three times in 2001, 2002, and 2003, and was nominated for four Golden Globe Awards for the same role. But, you probably don’t think of her as a singer.

She has been making music for a while. Mullally made her Broadway Musical debut as Marty in the 1994 revival of Grease, and she played Rosemary in the hit 1995 revival of How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying opposite Matthew Broderick. She starred as Elizabeth in Mel Brooks’ Broadway musical version of Young Frankenstein (2007). She can be heard on the cast albums of all three productions.

Mullally is also a member of the band Supreme Music Program, who released three albums: The Sweetheart Break-In (1999), Big As A Berry (2002) and Free Again (2007). This band is terrific, with Mullally’s lush vocals and their crazy post-modern cabaret sound featuring a mix of Blues, Pop, Country, Folk, Rock, and Classical Music. I own all three on CD and they get plenty of play at my house.

Hunt and Mullally as Nancy And Beth

Mullally met Stephanie Hunt in 2011 while they were filming Somebody Up There Likes Me in Texas. Despite their 30-year age difference, the two actors found that they shared a love of different genres of music and the same sly sense of humor. After goofing around on the set, they formed the duo Nancy And Beth, who cover contemporary and classic songs like Rufus Wainwright’s Vibrate, the Mills Brothers’ Cab Driver, Louis Jordan’s Jack, You’re Dead, and George Jones’ weeper He Stopped Loving Her Today. Their repertoire smartly shifts from reverent to wry wit.  Their close harmonies provide a perfect blend.

Their self-titled debut album has just been released and I am totally digging their sound.

Hunt:

“The album is very celebratory of music and all the songs are completely different, different genres. And that has never gone away. That’s something we do and one of the biggest parts of our band, is that we celebrate all different types of music. And I think that it’s just become more refined because now we’re celebrating it with dance moves and hats and canes.”

Mullally:

“The weird “showbiz!” element is totally there and we love it. But it’s also within the context of this daring, not formal band. Like the band is very deconstructed. It’s not a comedy band by any stretch but Stephanie and I are both funny people and we pick songs that we love but then the way that I choreograph them, there’s often a witty element to the choreography. It just adds this crazy element to the band where I think people just sit in the audience thinking, what’s that all about? We are taking that idea of that old-fashioned entertainment that was so popular back in the day with musicals like Singin’ In The Rain, and we’re bringing it to this band with just a little bit more modern sensibility, and there’s kind of a wink involved. “We’re not taking ourselves completely seriously.”

We are all so excited for the new 12-episode ninth season of Will & Grace with Mullally and original stars Eric McCormack, Debra Messing, and Sean Hayes picking up their characters’ stories a decade after they left us in 2006. Will & Grace creators/executive producers Max Mutchnick and David Kohan will shepherd the new episodes, along with director/executive producer James Burrows.

Nancy And Beth are currently on tour. They play Chicago on June 16 and Boston on June 23.

Here is there new video. Can you dig it?

#TheFutureIsNow

Brie Grimes, 17, and her girlfriend Lindsey Creel, 18, just got themselves crowned prom king and queen at Leon High School in Tallahassee, Florida. And, trust me, I know Tallahassee. This is a BIG DEAL. A great step forward and now I’m going to go ugly cry under my desk. I love them so  much, omg.

The deliriously happy-in-love couple spoke to the Tallahassee Democrat about their exciting win:

Prom night was so much fun – we literally danced the night away. We didn’t expect to win considering the people we were up against. We began to get really close and in such a short period of time she became my best friend and my number one person to go to.

The couple have just been celebrating their three years together after meeting at High School and told their local paper about how difficult it was to embark on their relationship at first.

She continued:

I knew I had feelings for her but everything was so hard because I didn’t know how everyone would react and I was scared of how I would be treated and how my family would react. Lindsey and I talked about it and from that conversation I knew I was at home when I was with her and that I couldn’t let her go. I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Lindsey said that for her it was love at first sight. She said that from the day she saw me she was going to do anything to be with me and to make me happy and she could see a future with me.

Brie also spoke about the very cool LGBTQ community within the school:

LGBTQ community at our school is very accepting. I do believe it is easier for females than it is males; at our school and just in society in general. I always felt accepted at our high school. My family was not accepting nor supporting at first, but after about a year they came around.

Lovelovelove this.

From Hollywood Boulevard, it’s The WOW Report for Radio Andy on SiriusXM! That’s right WOWers, World of Wonder Co-Founder Fenton Bailey, Executive VP of Development Tom Campbell, and WOW Report Editor James St. James have collaborated with reality TV guru and friend of WOW, Andy Cohen, on a weekly Top Ten Countdown of the things from the past week that make us go…WOW!

It’s a pop-culture obsessed hour complete with colorful diatribes, opposing opinions, and a dissection-like discussion that will make your drive home from work more fabulous!

We air TODAY at 4PM EST on SiriusXM, and again at 4PM PST (7PM EST). You can also catch it on the SiriusXM app! This week we’re joined by the sexy, smart, and sassy Michelle Visage from RuPaul’s Drag Race and RuPaul’s What’s the Tee podcast!

Let’s get started…

10) The New MTV Movie & TV Awards

There were two big changes to this year’s MTV Movie & TV Awards, and one of them is right there in the title – they’ve included television for the first time ever. The other big change was that they got rid of the male and female categories so there is just ONE best actor for each category. It’s gender neutral! AND RuPaul and RuPaul’s Drag Race were both nominated this year. RuPaul for Best Host and RDR for Best Competition Show, and we WON Best Competition Show! As if that weren’t enough for one weekend, RuPaul’s Drag Race was also spoofed on last week’s Saturday Night Live with Chris Pine! Check it out!

9) Battle of the Evitas: Patti LuPone vs. Madonna

Our boss Andy Cohen sure knows how to stir it up, doesn’t he? He had the legendary Patti LuPone on Watch What Happens Live! on Tuesday night and asked her about that other EvitaMadonna – and Ms. LuPone did NOT hold back.

8) Hot Menz of the Week: Emmanuel Macron

Thankfully France did NOT follow our lead by electing a psychopath as their leader! AND thankfully for us, he’s really handsome! ConDRAGulations to France’s new President-elect, Emmanuel Macron! Viva la France!

7) Is American Idol Back Too Soon?

It seems like it was just yesterday that American Idol finally went away after being on the air for long over a decade. And that’s because it practically was. It only went off the air a little over a year ago, yet ABC is bringing it back most likely in March 2018. Is that too soon? Have we even had time to mourn it’s loss let alone be nostalgic for it?

6) Stoner TV: Mike Tyson Mysteries

Have you wondered what Mike Tyson has been up to lately? Well we’ll tell ya! He has an animated show during Adult Swim on the Cartoon Network called Mike Tyson Mysteries where he and a crack team solve mysteries much in the same vein as Scooby Doo! And it’s THIRD season starts this Sunday night at 11:30 on the Cartoon Network.

5) Harlots: Hulu’s New Show About Old Whores

Michelle Visage is OBSESSED with the new British show currently on Hulu called Harlots about rival prostitutes in  17th century London. It has gorgeous costumes, gorgeous hair, and some gorgeous men so why WOULDN’T you want to watch?

4) Stephen Colbert is NOT a Homophobe

Last week, Stephen Colbert made a joke about Trump and Putin that many perceived to be offensive and even homophobic. Stephen Colbert is NOT a homophobe. Trump and Putin ARE homophobes. WOWlebrity and journalist Michael Musto summed it up perfectly on his Facebook:

Stephen Colbert wasn’t making fun of gays, he was making fun of Trump and Putin. And his joke deftly shamed two huge homophobes. As for the Trump supporters who say his remark was vulgar…And you voted for “grab them by the pussy” Trump????? This is going to be hard for you people to understand, but Trump is a vulgar, corrupt buffoon and Colbert was satirizing that. Got it? The fact that this joke is being investigated by the FCC, while Trump’s ties to Russia aren’t treated with the requisite urgency is one of the most hilarious (yet sad) developments in our nation today. Trump can strive to ban Muslims, deny health care, praise dictators, and undo LGBT rights and Putin can lock up and kill gays and terrorize women, but if a comic makes a joke that they’re having sex, that needs to be investigated!!!!

3) We Are Groot: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

We had mixed feelings about the second installment of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. James St. James LOVED it, but Tom not so much… Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is currently open in theaters nationwide.

2) Tony Nominations: Bette Midler, Sally Fields, Ben Platt & More

The Tony Award nominations are out, darling! And this year, the competition is going to be FIERCE! Nominated for Tonys this year are Bette Midler! Sally Fields! Ben Platt! Cate Blanchett! Laurie Metcalfe! Christine Ebersole! David Hyde Pierce! Laura Linney! Patti LuPone! Nathan Lane! Tune in to see who wins Sunday, June 11 at 8PM on CBS.

1) Sign of the Times? The Handmaid’s Tale on Hulu

The Handmaid’s Tale – about a dystopian future where women are stripped of their rights and the fertile women are forced to bear children for rich dudes – is based on the 1985 book of the same name, but with Trump in the White House it could just as easily be present day. The Handmaid’s Tale is currently streaming on Hulu.

Listen in at 4:00PM EST and again at 4:00 PST (7 PM EST) on SiriusXM! Or listen whenever you want on the SiriusXM App!

And be sure to give your ears the gift of THE WOW REPORT on Radio Andy SiriusXM EVERY Friday.

Do something this weekend that makes YOU go WOW!!!

Watch These Trailers for Marilyn Manson’s Freaky New Southern Gothic Thriller “Let Me Make You a Martyr”

IMDB calls it “A cerebral revenge film about two adopted siblings who fall in love, and hatch a plan to kill their abusive father.” Yep. Take my money.

It stars Party Monster star Marilyn Manson as a skeevy hitman who croaks out an old song his daddy sang in the first trailer, and creepily asks, “Have you ever killed anybody with your bare hands?” in the second. “Manson’s performance will leave people talking…” says the Playlist. And by golly, I’m talking about it now.

Watch them both below. (via PAPER magazine)

Aubrey O’Day Recounts How She Was Nearly Let Go From Celebrity Apprentice For Not Showing Enough T & A

Ultra-glam singer/superstar Aubrey O’Day recently told Andy Cohen about a 2003 behind-the-scenes conversation she had with producers of Celebrity Apprentice, where she was told if she wanted to win, she needed to show more skin.

Celebrity Apprentice was probably my favorite show I’ve ever been on,” the reality star and Danity Kane singer revealed on Andy Cohen’s Then and Now this week. “I was thriving at it. And there were two female producers that came up to me, pulled me aside and said, ‘You’re running circles around everyone. We didn’t expect that from you and we respect that and we’re rooting for you and so we’re trying to help you. Bottom line, [then show host Donald] Trump doesn’t think you’re pretty.'”

She was given guideline, she says, to follow if she wanted to go all the way during her season:

‘If you want to stay in the game, you need to follow these simple rules.’ And the rules were: start parting my hair down the center, wearing it straight and pushing my tits up in tight outfits,” Aubrey recalled. “I would have been sent home if I didn’t start looking hotter in the eyes of all mighty one that’s now our president.”

She did it, it worked, and she landed in the final three along with Clay Aiken and Arsenio Hall. (Spoiler Alert: Arsenio was that season’s winner)

Check out her story from Andy Cohen’s Then & Now, below. And don’t forget to tune in Wednesday’s at 10/9c. (via Bravo; Photo: Pacific Coast News)

Joe Jonas and Nicki Minaj Play Spin the Bottle in Fab New DNCE Video “Kissing Strangers”

Joe Jonas‘ band DNCE joins up with Nicki Minaj in the supercuts superdisco “Kissing Strangers” video. Marc Klasfeld directed the Seventies-set clip.

Via Billboard:

The video opens up on lead singer Joe Jonas who is sitting back and putting on his headphones. He is then seemingly transported to the Seventies where he is biking around a suburb handing out fliers for a party. At a convenience store, he meets up with bassist Cole Whittle who does exactly as the song implies — kisses a stranger in a photobooth. At the party, the rest of the band joins in on the fun, playing spin the bottle and seven minutes in Heaven. As the band performs in a bar, Nicki Minaj joins the party and pulls Jonas in for an almost-kiss.

As always with DNCE, though, questions linger. Are they fun…. or just extra? Is that guy with the lopsided mohawk cute…. or nah? Do I reeeeeally like this song…. or is it just a manipulative hook with a quirky vocal contrivance? I don’t know, I don’t know. But I watched it twice.

And Nicki just nails it. How is she perfect in EVERY type of song?
