Trend Alert: New Unicorn Body Shimmer Has a 50,000-Person Wait List

Unicorn Frappuccinos are soooooooo last week. THIS week, everyone is going bananas over Australian beauty brand Frank Body ‘s forthcoming “Shimmer Scrub” – dubbed by fashion folk as a “Unicorn scrub.” It’s so eagerly anticipated, in fact, that it’s already garnered a 50,000-person waitlist ahead of its launch.

Via Fashionista:

“My Shimmer Scrub is made from Glow Dust,” the marketing materials for the product read. “That’s tiny gold and silver particles which hug your skin, just like highlighter for your bod.” The scrub is also supposed to “make your skin shimmer, like a disco ball,” aka the 2017 version of the roll-on body glitter we all used to stock up on at Limited Too in the ’90s.

The Unicorn Scrub officially launches May 1 on the brand’s website and will retail for $19.95. It’s said to resemble Frank Body’s famous Coffee Scrub, but without chocolatey hue. It does feature ground coffee as one exfoliant, along with both salt and sugar for additional sloughing and buffing.

And, like Frank Body’s original formulas, it’s also a moisturizing one, spiked with grapeseed oil and vitamin E to soften and protect skin. But this one leaves behind sparkles, courtesy of mica, the mineral that’s been used to make cosmetics glimmery for decades. Frank Body refers to mica as “the closest thing to glow dust,” also noting that the “tiny gold and silver particles [are] packed with electrical properties to turn your skin on — and up,” in a press release.

Join the waiting list here.

WOW Exclusive: LA Riots Reporter Zoey Tur on Filming Reginald Denny’s Beating, Being Shot At, and the Surprising Positive Aftermath

Reporter/trans activist Zoey Tur was there in 1992 when riots broke in in South Central Los Angeles after a jury acquitted four LAPD officers of excessive force in the videotaped arrest and beating of Rodney King. The violence then spread throughout the Los Angeles metropolitan area as thousands of people rioted over a six-day period.

It was Zoey in the helicopter who captured the footage of Reginald Denny, the white truck driver who stopped at a traffic light at the intersection of Florence and Normandie, and was dragged from his semi-trailer truck and severely beaten by a mob of local residents.

I called Zoey today, on the 25th anniversary of the riots, to talk about her memories of those emotionally charged days.

JSJ: Tell me what you remember about the day of the riots. What was the mood of the city?:
ZOEY TUR: “The day of the Los Angeles Riots was scary, there was so much tension. Right after the not guilty verdict, I turned to (my then-wife) Marika and said ‘Let the riots begin!’ I knew it would happen. One of my news directors from the TV station called me up and said ‘Go fly and tell everyone how peaceful the city is.’ As I was reporting, I saw that it wasn’t. I believed I would be arrested as soon as I landed, because what we learned was is that the LAPD Top Commanders had left the city to burn.“

How was it you managed to be in the right place at the right time to film Reginald Denny being pulled from his car and beaten by the mob?:
“We had done research. We didn’t think that the officers would be convicted after the trial was moved to Simi Valley. Simi Valley is whiter than Mammoth Lake during winter. So, there was no way that I believed they’d be convicted. So, I believed the aftermath of a decision like that would be a riot. I talked to mothers, fathers, gang members, anyone who would talk to me in South Los Angeles. I asked them what they thought would happen, they all said riots. One police officer told me that the rioting would begin at a liquor store. Tom’s Liquor Store was in the heart of gang invested areas in South Los Angeles. That’s where it began and that’s where we were.”

I’ve read that your helicopter was shot at. In that moment, were you terrified or were you in pure journalistic mode?:
“I was in journalistic mode and on adrenaline flying through that war zone. I was so concentrated on the mission and doing my best to avoid gunfire- but that was impossible. During the flight, I turned to the crew and said ‘If we go down for any reason, you need to find shelter and barricade yourself inside until help comes.’ We were armed, we brought weapons with us, because we were going to a riot. We were very concerned about our own safety as well.”

Were you scared for the city? Looking at the footage now it seems so apocalyptic. Did you think this was the new normal, that things would never go back to the way they were?:
“I thought the rioting would only last three days. I compared it to a wild fire. Everything seems to go in three day cycles. After three days, the weather changes and the fire dies down. But while the wind is blowing, the fire rages on. It was the same case with the riots. But, after three days, people got tired. They came to their senses and looked around. They saw the magnitude of what happened. Then the healing had to begin. The LA Riots were as necessary as rain. They helped burn away the disease that was holding South Central down. All of it was burned and cleared away. The riots led to renewed growth. The LAPD had serious problems. There have been serious changes. Back in 1992, around 23% of African Americans believed that they were getting a fair share or race relations were acceptable. Today, it’s around 73%. Sadly, what we’ve learned in Los Angeles has been lost on the rest of the country.”

Are Things Better Now?:
“Los Angeles is better now [regarding race relations]. But, not the rest of the country. But, that could change overnight if there is another case like Rodney King. Back in 1992 you couldn’t go to a restaurant in South Los Angeles because there was no neighborhood, there were no community. Now, there is money in South Los Angeles. They now have representation in government, there’s influence. But, now with Donald Trump in the White House, we are seeing racism in the United States. He is a serious threat to the United States, more than ISIS – that’s what I believe.”

“I’m very positive about California, but then again, the rest of the country, you have to realize that just under 50% of the population are very racist. They voted for their racism. That’s why the polls were never accurate because no one wanted to admit their racism. Before the election, I said they would go into the voting booth and say ‘Fuck Transgender bathrooms, Fuck Black Lives Matter, Fuck those Mexicans! I want mine!’. And that’s exactly what they did. And don’t think gay marriage didn’t have anything to do with it! That was the last gasp of the white, heterosexual male.”

It may be their last gasp, but they can do an awful lot of damage before they’re done…
We’re seeing that now, huh?

Yes. well, that’s another talk for another day, lol. Thanks for talking to us today, Zoey. Amazing stories. Hope to see you soon!
Bye!

I Had a Coloring Party with Transgender Inmates in NYC & Here’s What Happened…

So, right now I’m in the air on my way to RuPaul’s DragCon to sign my book, cover the convention and parties and meet some fierce queens. But Wednesday I met some pretty fierce trans inmates and had a little coloring party in jail…

Here’s how that happened and what went down.

The publisher of my book Transform Your Life with Color By Number, Judith Regan, donated several hundred copies of my book to Rikers Island recently and she put me in touch with Cecilia Flaherty, the Diversion Coordinator and Associate Director, to do a little art therapy with transgender inmates awaiting trial at the Manhattan Detention Complex. How often do you get such an interesting opportunity? I was game.

Just getting into the place is more of an ordeal, than actually being in there. (Well, that’s easy for me to say because I knew I’d be getting out in a few hours and the other folks inside were not so lucky.) Cecilia had another guest besides myself, Mariya (an intern) who was there really just to observe the process and meet some of the detainees.

After I put all my possessions in a locker, besides my watch, glasses, driver’s license and what I was wearing, we signed in, were given badges, ink stamped, put through metal detector, scanned and cleared through two areas took an elevator, walked over an enclosed suspended bridge, took another elevator, some stairs, and we finally landed in something you might recognize from Orange is the New Black. A cell block with a common area housing transgender women.

It was loud and SUPER rowdy at first and a correctional officer was trying to address some administrative tasks. There were two areas, one down some steps and another up with a table and plastic chairs surrounded by tiny cells. Cecilia said hi to all and introduced us and met 4 or 5 new detainees that she didn’t know. After a bit of wrangling, we gathered a group of about 8-10 in a circle around two tables.

We had two copies of my book and two brand new sets of 48 Prismacolor pencils along with the deer coloring sheet I made 60 copies for everyone who wanted to participate. And believe me, not everyone did at first. Cecilia introduced me and I spoke a bit about my book, my work the history paint by number, etc.

And then we just sat and colored for an hour or so and chatted. Cecilia had some follow-up info about their cases, Mariya spoke with some of them about various things, as did I. It was all pretty normal, except for every single thing.

I thought I might speak to them about how I used art to transform MY life and using the Law of Attraction to bring positive things in your life but I realized talking with them and sharing is really a trust issue. Who are these white people? What do they know about me? I DO get that. If I wanted to really talk the talk and walk the walk, I’d have to show up more regularly to gain some respect and trust. And without any expectations.
I got a lot out of it personally – different things that I expected. It really confirmed for me how we are the product of many factors in life and some just have more to deal with than others. And at the same time I saw how the info is out there for ALL OF US to have the life we want but just knowing something doesn’t make it take root. You need positive role models, some tenacity and a good mental attitude.

It made me grateful for my life and took me out of myself to see ANY complaint I might have about ANYTHING is pretty minor….

And that being incarcerated is a real culture, one that is created out of the situation and survival. It really affirmed for me that we can’t go back or jump ahead to the future.

A new painting I have on the boards now is based on a vintage paint by number of a barn with a road going off into the distance. The text superimposed will read:

START WHERE YOU ARE

That’s all any of us can do –ever.

Katie Couric Had a Chilling Conversation with Russian Spokeswoman About the Torture of Chechen Gays

Katie Couric sat down with Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova for a talk on Yahoo News this week. The conversation skipped around from “ridiculous” U.S. airstrikes in Syria, to fake news and President Trump, among other topics.

Then Katie brought up the reports of concentration camps in Chechnya in which gay men have been tortured and killed.

That’s when things got chilly.

Zakharova, whose job description is literally “international relationships,” shut Katie down, repeatedly saying she wasn’t qualified to discuss the issue, it was outside her job duties, she had no response, she didn’t know, nyet, nyet, nyet.

Katie continued pressing, and eventually got a meagre “Russia is investigating it” – but essentially it was deflect and deny, deflect and deny.

Watch it below. (via Queerty)

Must-See DragCon Panel: Meet the Oh-So-Glamorous 1960s/’70s-Era Female Illusionist Alexis Del Lago SUNDAY, 1PM

Sunday, 1PM, Transparent‘s Zachary Drucker and I will be interviewing the legendary queen Alexis Del Lago on a DragCon panel. I strongly urge you to come if you can

For those of you who have never heard of her, this short documentary, directed by Craig Calman and alternately called He Made Herself a Star, is a marvelous peek into the bygone world of the quietly fading goddess. The ever-alluring drag legend Alexis Del Lago has been beguiling clubgoers for decades. I remember meeting her in the ’80s and even then she seemed a dazzling relic from an earlier age. Here she talks (in a sadly faltering voice) about Warhol and Mapplethorpe (whom she found “tacky”) and shows us the pictures of an incredible life lived to the fullest, on the furthest edges of society. This is our LGBT history, people, and Alexis is a living monument to our culture.

Paul Rudnick Asks About Trump’s First 100 “Hard” Days –”Have You Ever Had a Job?”

trump4

1441428_596842227040976_790900507_n
You know Paul Rudnick from his work on movies like Addams Family Values, The First Wives Club, In & Out, and the screen version of his play Jeffrey. He’s written many other things, but I’ve been following his posts on Facebook lately and his astute observations have turned to politics, summing up the first 100 days of Trump.

“Trump’s first 100 days have revealed only what absolutely everyone in America already knew: that’s he’s inept, unqualified and an embarrassment. He’s accomplished nothing, outside of appointing the expectedly conservative and arrogant Neal Gorsuch to the Supreme Court, and using executive orders to disenfranchise as many women, poor people and LGBTQ people as he can.

People on the left remain outraged, while Trump’s supporters stand behind him, for one simple reason: they never expected results. They knew his promises were empty blather. They’re not really all that upset about jobs or infrastructure. All they need to know is that Trump won, which means they won.

That’s all the Trumpites ever needed: attention and revenge. Once in office, Trump has behaved exactly as they would, as a hopeless amateur. President Obama and Hillary Clinton were smart, experienced and educated, which made them a threat. Obama and Hillary didn’t ignore a certain segment of the white middle class, but just by existing, they made those voters feel squirmingly inferior. No one ever feels inferior to Trump.

This is why, when interviewed about Trump’s sweeping lack of achievments and constant lying, his supporters say, ‘I think he’s doing great’ or ‘At least he’s trying.’ This is exactly what they’d like to hear said about themselves.

Trump has also provided his backers with the one other factor they crave: an enemy. When Trump bombed Syria, his fans said, “He’s showing the world that we’re in charge again.” And Trump’s constant harping on a wall which will never be funded or built continues to create an image of evil, most often accented and brown skinned outsiders, seeking to vote illegally, steal America’s jobs and sell drugs to our children. On some insane, restless level, many Americans miss war, as if war was some larger version of the Superbowl.

Trump can’t alienate his base, because they’re barely bothering to pay attention to anything he says or does. They can see his face and feel a sense of ongoing accomplishment. The eggheads have been vanquished. All of those whining women and their politically correct lawyers have been put in their place. The world is once again safe for vicious mediocrity, which is what the Trump folks refer to as “solid values.” Done.

As for the future? Democrats remain in a muddle, waiting for either a viable new leader, or some catastrophic Trump blunder. There’s also an exhaustion aspect, which, oddly, Trump shares. When he says “I never knew the job would be so hard”, he actually expects Americans to sympathize. This may end up bringing the country together, as everyone, red and blue alike, asks,

Have you ever had a job?‘” –Paul Rudnick

Detail from Self Portrait (1898)

Konstantin Andreyevich Somov (1869-1939) was a Russian painter and illustrator associated with the World Of Art Movement. He was from a very cultured family; his father was an historian/curator at Hermitage Museum and his mother was a musician.  Somov was passionate about art and music from an early age. As a child, he played piano, took voice lessons and painted. He also had a passion for men. When he was 17-years-old had a love affair with writer Dmitry Filosofov, who later became Sergei Diaghilev’s lover.

Somov studied at the Imperial Academy Of Arts from 1888 to 1897. The World Of Art Movement was founded by a group of students at the school to promote artistic individualism and the principles of Art Nouveau. Their motto was “Art For Art’s Sake”. Their magazine, Mir Iskusstva, was highly influential in the art world at the start twentieth century. Diagilev served as Editor-in-Chief, and Somov wrote and provided drawings.

During the 1910s, Somov’s works were exhibited all over Europe, especially popular in Germany. His boyfriend during this era was Mefodii Lukyanov, who he painted many times. They were a couple for more than two decades.

During the Russian Revolution, Somov fled to the USA, but found our country unresponsive to his art. He relocated to Paris, where he lived, loved and painted until his passing at 70-years-old. You can find him at the Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois Cemetery.

The Boxer (1933)

In spring 2007, Somov’s painting Landscape With Rainbow (1927) was sold at Christie’s for $7.33 million, a record for a work of Russian Art. I am mostly drawn to his paintings of men, which are remarkable. My favorite is The Boxer (1933), which sold at Christie’s in 2011 for $1.1 million, besting my bid of $111.11.

Martin Short gave Jimmy Fallon his teeth back last night as his the Hollywood interviewer, Jiminy Glick.

He introduced Trump as a former reality star, bankrupt casino owner” but he could barely get out the words, “the 45th president of the United States…”

“Now your first hundred days, would you say it’s a complete embarrassment or a total failure?”

And…

“If Mike Pence is against gay people, why does he walk around with a stick up his ass?”

No time for answers, Short just plowed the through the bit, cramming in as many insults as he could.

“It’s now been 100 days… since you’ve seen Melania. Where is she? Where does she go?

My God, you’re a handsome man, not many people can pull off a mouth that looks like a cat’s butthole as it walks away from you.”

He asks why Trump squints so much..?

“Is it because you don’t see what you’re doing to the country?”

Watch.
