Free-form blobs made of felt scraps, tinfoil, dust bunnies, and butcher paper took center stage at Commes Des Garcons. WHAT on earth is going on in designer Rei Kawakubo‘s head?

Explains Vogue:

To enter as a spectator is to be certain only that you’re going to be seeing her enacting something that is post-fashion—never about catching trends or flogging garments. Kawakubo disables the usual instruments by which we fash-judge. It’s anxiety-making and thrilling. You have to feel something—even if it’s that you are a blundering idiot, not understanding.

This is what happened for Fall 2017—the last collection that will make it into the Comme des Garçons exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum in May. A pair of women walked out, encased in large armless forms with bulbously sculptural curves made out of white wadding. First impression: They were wonkily exaggerated dress forms of the stock studio kind every designer drapes fabric on. Then came the stream of secondaries: the Venus de Milo, the Venus of Willendorf, snow women, women haplessly trapped in an outsize parody of the absurdity of female form.

One can overthink at a Comme des Garçons show. Truth be told, the mood never portended an ominous end-of-days scenario. The shapes that walked on next were bubbles made from synthetic silver insulation materials suggesting—perhaps—space-age travel, and after that, a giant white trench coat, the size of a small planet.

In the end, Kawakubo issued few words beyond the title of the collection, “The Future of Silhouette.” That seemed to confirm that she had indeed been meditating on the nature of fashion itself, its processes, and where it might go next. Few are the designers big enough to challenge the audience to think and feel like Kawakubo does.

Brilliant. I would so rock any one of these.

The established NYC artist is using his trip to Fire Island as a way to break out of his shell and find new inspiration. With all the adventures the island has to offer, Justin tries to navigate it all without losing focus on his new boyfriend.

Patrick

Robert Osborne, the longtime host of Turner Classic Movies, has died. A statement from TCM’s Jennifer Dorian said,

“All of us at Turner Classic Movies are deeply saddened by the death of Robert Osborne.He joined us as an expert on classic film and grew to be our cherished college and esteemed ambassador for TCM.

Robert was embraced by devoted fans who saw him as a trusted expert and friend. His calming presence, gentlemanly style, encyclopedic knowledge of film history, fervent support for film preservation and highly personal interviewing style all combined to make him a truly world-class host.

Robert’s contributions were fundamental in shaping TCA into what it is today and we owe him a debut of gratitude that can never be repaid.“

Osborne was on TCM since it made its on-air debut in April 1994. A Washington native, Osborne moved to Hollywood to pursue a career in acting and was once mentored by Lucille Ball. He was in the, The Beverly Hillbillies and The Man with Bogart’s Face.

He was known for writing several books on the history of the Academy Awards. Below is an interview with the late movie legend, Debbie Reynolds.

Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life was a massive success! In a year dubbed “a trash fire,” our favorite mother-daughter revival on everybody’s favorite streaming service Netflix was the highlight for some, in an otherwise, well, “trash fire” of a year. Netflix’s chief content officer Ted Sarandos stated earlier today that they are in preliminary talks about a second season.

“We hope [it happens],” he said. “We obviously loved the success of the show [and] fans loved how well it was done; it delivered what they hoped. The worst thing is to wait a couple of years for your favorite show to come back and for it to disappoint you, but [series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino and exec producer Dan Palladino] sure delivered and people were really excited about more. And we have been talking to them about the possibility of that.’

We sure hope so because those final four words out of Rory’s mouth could spark an ENTIRE new spin-off series. Here’s to hoping!

As someone who interviewed Trump dozens of times, how did your estimation of him change over the years? The first time he came on Late Night, which I think was in ’87, there’s deference on your part to the idea that he might know something about the economy.
He was a mogul, for God’s sake.

By 2012, you’re making fun of his hair apparatus and explaining to him that his ties were being made in China.
I always regarded him as, if you’re going to have New York City, you gotta have a Donald Trump. He was a joke of a wealthy guy. We didn’t take him seriously. He’d sit down, and I would just start making fun of him. He never had any retort. He was big and doughy, and you could beat him up. He seemed to have a good time, and the audience loved it, and that was Donald Trump. Beyond that, I remember a friend in the PR business told me that he knew for a fact — this was three or four presidential campaigns ago — that Donald Trump would never run for president; he was just monkeying around for the publicity. So I assumed that was the story and now it turns out he’s the president. Now, who owns New York?

On how comedy will save us from Trump:

How? Is comedy useful for that?
Comedy’s one of the ways that we can protect ourselves. Alec Baldwin deserves a Presidential Medal of Freedom. Sadly, he’s not going to get it from this president.

Can you explain that a bit more? How does satire protect us from Donald Trump?

Bannon looks like a guy who goes to lunch, gets drunk, and comes back to the office: “Steve, could you have just one drink?” “Fuck you.” How is a white supremacist the chief adviser to our president? Did anybody look that up? I don’t know. How’s this interview going? Do you think you’re talking to a normal person here? Don’t I seem like I’m full of something?

On Pence:

Do you feel any better about your fellow Indianan Mike Pence?
He only got elected because he looks like the chair-throwing, longtime Indiana Hoosiers men’s basketball coach. Bobby Knight. Jeez, Pence scared the hell out of me. There was a therapy …

When you used to do bits, even the “Top Ten” list, it always seemed like you were suffering through them. How do you feel about late-night shows becoming vehicles for social media?
I knew it was happening, and I recognized that it was a good idea, but I didn’t know how to do it. When people around me would come up with ideas, I felt like, This is exploitation beyond the pale. We’re just going to produce some little precious moment here and put it up on the internet? But nobody wants to sit through an eight-minute interview with fill-in-the-blank. So these things are useful. But the idea of Twitter: Trumpy — my son, Harry, and I call him “Trumpy” — has really got something with it. Rather than a laughable expression of ego run amok, it could be a useful tool. If we get a president sometime soon who does not have a mental disorder, Twitter will be useful. So — I’m lonely, I can’t stop talking.

Yelp is helping to fight the good fight against the transphobic White House by pointing their users towards the nearest ‘locking, single-stall bathroom’ that is ‘accessible to persons of any gender’.

Yelp’s Head of Diversity and Inclusion Rachel Williams told Mashable:

This is one of the [first] times we’ve integrated any type of public policy or social stance into our products. Conversations started to happen internally about how uncomfortable people are with what’s going on in the world today in our country with people’s civil liberties and rights. Our product team wanted to help out and get involved.

You’ll be able to search for businesses that have gender neutral restrooms on Yelp the same way you’re able to search for businesses that are wheelchair accessible, have parking, or accept credit cards.

Yelp announced this new feature in support of Gavin Grimm, who sued his high school in Arizona for not allowing him to use the men’s restroom.

Rachel Williams said:

At Yelp we thrive on inclusion and acceptance, and we hope that our support for Gavin’s case and the addition of this new business attribute will help our friends in the LGBTQQIA community.

Last year Esther Godoy created an anthology of essay’s stories and photographs titled “Butch Is Not A Dirty Word“, where contributors tackled the discrimination of the butch identity. The second issue is slated to release March 17th and this issue is a “celebration of butch and masculine-of-center identity and culture among queer women”.

“There are endless stories to be told under the LGBTQIA umbrella, each just as important as each other,” Godoy told The Huffington Post. “I felt that the story of how I personally identify wasn’t being told, and I felt incredibly lonely in that ― in exploring this further, I realized that I wasn’t the only one. It’s so important to have visibility for all kinds of identities and presentations, you can’t be what you can’t see, and it can be a painful and damaging place to exist when you feel like you are the only one.”

The Huffington Post: Tell us a bit about the genesis of Butch Is Not A Dirty Word. What makes this issue different from the first?

Esther Godoy: BINADW was never supposed to go past the first issue, but it had such a huge response from both the queer and wider community that we really saw there was a need for further representation of these people. With issue two we wanted to move beyond the surface level dialogue, that butches still exist and that there are people out there who appreciate them. We wanted to dive deeper, so we decided to explore how the butch experience intersects with the “family” experience. This gave us a chance to make visible and to share the stories of a broader variety of people, touching on more complex issues.

What do you want to explore by highlighting the relationships butch-identified people have with their families?

There is such a weighted stereotype that comes with the “butch” label. This stereotype often paints a picture of loneliness, exclusion, grotesque physically ― generally of a person who is to be mocked, feared or disliked. More often than not there is this initial push back on queer masculinity by biological family, most of which can be attributed to society’s prejudice. It is understandable why parents might not want their kids to be queer or masculine of center, they don’t want them to have hard life, and every reference to butchness around them points to that being a very likely possibility. Our mission with BINADW is to change that. Throughout issue two, we aim to portray butch people more authentically than this stereotype allows, showing them existing happily and engaging in meaningful connections with those around them.

What kinds of things can people expect form this issue?

A gorgeous set of images thanks to our photographers Georgia Smedley, River Grace, Elliott Oakes and Jai Florez and a series of essays written from an array of different butch identifying folk’s perspectives. Exploring how their butchness intersects with the experiences they’ve had with both biological and chosen families.

What do you want people to take away from this issue?

There is nothing to be feared in butch! Butch people are beautiful, they exist happily, they have jobs, families, friends, they contribute to society in the same capacity as everybody else. It is our hope, that with time, as a society, we’ll move beyond merely accepting queer masculinity in children and move forward into celebrating it, encouraging our young people to be the most authentic versions of themselves they can be. We want to provide a more positive representation of what generations of bigotry and fear have shaped as one of the most negative ways to exist.

Why are your prices so low?

We are factory direct! Everything is designed by us, and we manufacture everything to the highest standards. We buy all of our raw materials and fibers in bulk. They are of the highest quality in order to provide the best wigs in the world!!

What are your hours of operation?
Our hours of operation are M-F 9am-5pm CST. The best way to contact us is through this site or by email. You may also call us if you prefer. 

Do you ship on Saturdays?
No, we are closed on the weekends. If there is a “wig emergency” and you need something Expressed over the weekend, leave a note at checkout and or email us. We will try our best to get it out to you on Saturday for a Monday delivery (USA). You can also place a call for special delivery Mon-Fri 9am-5Pm CST 281-506-7180 and we will be happy to help you.

Do you combine shipping on International orders?
Remember all international orders over $99 USD, the shipping is FREE! We will try to combine wigs into one Flat Rate Envelope when possible. As a general rule, we do not combine wigs with detachable ponytails since the ponytails are bulky and act pretty much as a second wig. When we combine the wigs, we might remove one of the cardboard sides to create space. PLEASE NOTE: Our shopping cart system has no way to determine combined shipping, so please pay separate shipping for each item and leave a note to us that you want it combined. We will promptly refund the additional shipping charge(s) to you when we print out the label. If you want priority or express shipping extra charges will need to be paid at time of checkout since we use ground shipping on all orders.

How soon will it ship from the time order is placed?
We ship the same day if ordered by 12 noon Central Standard Time from Houston, TX.

What kind of fibers do you use in your wigs? Is it safe to heat style my wig?
We use a high temperature fiber that can be heated up to 180*F/82*C – the lowest setting on most hair tools. Our wigs have much thought and thorough testing put into each design and do not require a style overhaul like general cosplay wigs

We have introduced a new Korean fiber that we toured all over S. Korea to find. We bought it in huge bulk to keep the prices low. The first collections to implement it are Classic Straight Mix, Lady Amara and Sweetheart. The color mixes are limited to mostly natural tones and can be heated to a higher temperature of 428*F/220*C (Be sure to spot test it before applying to wig as some thermometers are not always accurate). PLEASE NOTE: Super bright colors and many pastel colors will not be available in this new fiber.

What is the difference between “blend” and “mix” in your wig descriptions?
In the real world, the words are interchangeable for the most part, but in the wig world a “blend” is when two colors are used in a design with each color still distinguishable from the other. A “mix” is when the two different fibers that are mixed together form a new color – i.e. Red & White = Pink.

Local inhabitants of the Divagate Islands in the Philippines were understandably freaked out when the carcass of a giant, hairy MONSTER washed ashore.

According to National Geographic, the other-wordly creature measured 20 feet long and weighed more than 4,000 pounds. It’s shaggy white hair caused some to speculate that it was a “half-whale, half-polar bear” mutant hybrid.

But at least one expert think she’s got it figured out.

“It’s definitely a very decomposed sea creature in the later stages of decomposition,” Lucy Babey, head of science and conservation for whale and dolphin protection group ORCA, told the BBC.

Similarly, a team of researchers from the municipal office of Cagiano believe the remains are from a whale that had been dead for two weeks. Its “hair” is likely from decomposed muscle fibers, according to the National Geographic.

Babey seems to think the animal is a whale, too.

“The carcass is about six meters long, but that’s obviously not the whole carcass ― there’s no tail so it would have been bigger than that,” Babey added. “That would suggest that it was probably a whale.”

Locals believe that the creature washed on shore as a result of a 6.7 magnitude earthquake that hit the Philippines on Feb. 10.

Charmingly grey-haired fan favorite Max from season 7 of RuPaul’s Drag Race hasn’t let the end of the competition stop his drive. Self described as a “Tarantino bitch in the making”, Max has an anticipated web series titled Agent Max dropping soon.

Created in collaboration with Minneapolis-based director John Mark, the three-part project aims to subvert masculine casting norms in mainstream cinema by introducing a rare, queer Bond-like protagonist.

“The role of an action star, the fight choreography, auto-drifting, athleticism and tough mental constitution, for whatever reason, appear to be an overtly masculine trade,” John Mark said. “However, if you live in the real world, you’ll meet many a gay man who is fully capable of the violence, tenacity and drive it takes to play a hero vigilante.”

The director said Malanaphy first proposed the concept to him in August 2016, looking for an on-screen opportunity to be “an agent of justice, and of creation.” Together, they began embarking on 12-hour shoot days, where the RuPaul alumnus was filmed kicking ass in full mug to introduce a new kind of hero. “You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and hopefully, ask for more,” John Mark said of the series.
