Reason to Rejoice: Carol Burnett Is Returning to Television in Upcoming Amy Poehler Sitcom!

Just when the world was at it darkest and life had become a soul-crushing series of tragedies and misfortunes… SOMETHING GOOD HAPPENS. And the world can rejoice once more.

Deadline is reporting today that ABC has given a pilot green light to Household Name, a multi-camera comedy starring the dream-team of Carol Burnett and Amy Poehler.

Household Name is about a family who gets a chance to buy the house of their dreams but under extremely abnormal circumstances: They must live with the current owner, an eccentric, larger-than-life actress (Burnett) — until she dies.

Omg, Burnett doing her Nora Desmond every week? I’M SO THERE.

Writer/executive producer Mark Saltzman says the series that would mark both Burnett’s return to TV series and her sitcom-starring debut.

“To be able to provide her with an opportunity to ‘play in the sandbox’ again, as she’s fond of saying, is not only an unbelievable thrill but a great honor and responsibility,” he said. “She’s not only one of the most brilliant and beloved comediennes to ever appear on television, she’s also a very gifted dramatic actress. So, my goal is to hopefully give her material that will allow her to showcase all her talents and range, and, just as importantly, to create an environment she’ll enjoy and have fun creating and playing in, like she had on her original show. It’s every writer’s dream to write for such a talented and funny actress, and it’s a fulfillment of a lifelong fantasy for me, personally.”

Raja‘s one queen who’s been around the block a few times, so when she gives the new girls of RuPaul’s Drag Race a bit of her hard-won knowledge – you’d hope they listen.

Writing on her Facebook page she says: “Have fun girls! I have some advice:

  • Keep your prices reasonable, because if you’re talentless (on stage) but can paint and wear a cute look, you’ll work for a year. Take pictures with EVERYONE who asks , because one day no one will give a fuck about you. If you’re nice, you get to work a lot like me. I know my worth, but I don’t ever fool myself.
  • Don’t lose your passport.
  • Get a passport.
  • Learn to sing live, it’s the future, and our origin.
  • Respect everyone…even idiots.
  • Don’t say racist shit on a mic. People will fucking hate you.
  • Get drunk
  • Get sober
  • Fuck all the twinks, there’s so many.
  • Tweet ( and retweet) all the designers and taste makers you love
  • Be on Delta Work’s good side Gabriel Villarreal
  • Don’t blame your assmouth on editing
  • Don’t read the comments or even look at friend requests…you will stab yourself
  • Don’t get catfished online, I did. It was fun.
  • Don’t take your weed on a plane outside of the USof A. You won’t comeback home and will only know dirt floors for the rest of your life.
  • I love most of you. I can not wait to see you babes kick ass and have a wonderful time.
  • Also music videos don’t need to cost twenty grand.”

#GenderRevolution: Meet Michaela Mendelsohn

National Geographic
Katie Couric, and World of Wonder Production’s collaborated on a moving new project “Gender Revolution” that premieres on February 6th at 9PM E.T. Highlighting the triumphs, struggles, and journeys of intersex, trans, and gender non-conforming, this documentary will reveal and relate the human condition: that we all want equal rights.

Meet Michaela Mendelsohn:

When Michaela Mendelsohn transitioned to female, she was already in a management position. She saw the impact unemployment had on her community and decided to do something about it — first by hiring trans and gender nonconforming people in her own @elpolloloco restaurants and then by creating the California Trans Work Project.

Here’s Michaela in her own words: “I see gender as a spectrum. Every one of us has our unique place on that spectrum. Many young people now prefer to refer to themselves as gender nonconforming, which is wonderful! We need to support each person’s choice without judgment or persecution. Now that the conversation about gender has come out in the open, I am hopeful that as a society we continue to move towards understanding, acceptance and finally ‘celebrate’ our uniqueness as individuals.”

To learn more about the project and Michaela’s work, watch #GenderRevolution on @NatGeoChannelon Feb. 6 at 9/8c.

Brenda from the ‘Scary Movie’ Franchise Is the REAL Star!

Using Trumpspeak Against Him and His Followers Is the Best Idea Yet for Resistance

$
0
0

Heather Havrilesky over at the Awl has devised what might be the most ingenious strategy for defeating Trump and his minions yet: Communicating in simple, repetitive talking points, just like the Emperor Cheeto himself…

Forget clever, she writes.

Use Trump’s rhetoric. Reckless, scary words are the most useful words to describe him, because almost everything he does is reckless and scary. For example:

“It was a disaster, a huge disaster, and totally preventable. Trump messed up. Completely incompetent.”

Or maybe you’d say:

“Those SEALs went in there, and got torn apart. Nightmare, never should’ve happened. Trump messed up, big league. Completely unstable.”

And you’d also definitely say:

“Impeach the guy. He’s an unstable person. Yemen? Disaster. Everyone knows it’s true. Even he knows it. Awful. Everyone agrees.”

It’s time to stop trying to sound like the smartest person in the room. Your psychoanalysis of our new president only makes you sound hung up on unimportant brainiac things. Details, issues, policy analysis? Those are great for longer pieces, sure, but they’re too subtle to spread virally on social media, and too complicated to inject into conversations and protests and action calls. Make sounds that any human can understand.

Another important rule of Trumpspeak? Don’t let anything go. During the election, we kept hearing “crooked” and “emails” and “Benghazi” about Hillary. So keep every single travesty on the tip of your tongue. Repeat, repeat, repeat to the point where you’re boring yourself. When some new horror comes along, add it to the mix, very few words, oversimplified:

“Bowling Green Massacre? Total lie. An embarrassment. Kellyanne Conway is an unstable person. Let the mentally ill buy guns? Are you crazy? Terrible! Let Putin bomb Ukraine? Bad idea, very bad. Incredibly dangerous.”

Then return to the big ones:

Look at Yemen. Disaster. Totally preventable. More nuclear arms? Is he joking? He’s dangerous. Unsafe. Has to go. It’s horrifying, an embarrassment. Everyone knows it.

If you’re not boring yourself, you’re not doing it right. Seriously. Make it simple.

He’s dead wrong on immigration. Everyone knows it. Doctors, academics, American citizens, treated like criminals? Terrible. An embarrassment. He’s unfit. He‘s gotta go.

Remember that simple messages will make you sound more trustworthy to a lot of people. Thanks, TV culture! Your detailed analysis of high capitalist corruption is not going to help that much. Instead, say this: HE’S TRYING TO START A WAR.

Of course, Democrats and progressives are incredibly afraid of using rhetoric of fear, like Trump and Bannon do. But isn’t fear our new reality? Aren’t we scared out of our minds over Trump, a man who has quickly demonstrated that he’s self-obsessed, unthinkably reckless, and utterly incapable of making even the faintest diplomatic sounds come out of his mouth? We can’t sit back and wait, because his mistakes are going to build on each other until they snowball into a global disaster….

Using Trumpspeak against him? Great idea. Good stuff. Really smart. Speak to the Right in a way they understand. Everyone should totally do it!

Black History Month: Top 10 Black Women Characters on TV

$

As we continue to celebrate Black History Month, it’s time to credit dynamic female characters that helped define the black woman in America. Because there are many compelling black women characters, I tried my best to focus on the ones that paved the way for other black actresses. Meaning, the character opened a door for better black roles in their field. So here is WOW’s Top 10 Black Women Characters on TV!

10. Wilhelmina Slater – Ugly Betty

Vanessa William’s was born to play this role. Not only was Slater the more smart-mouthed version of Miranda Presley, but she had a heart in the end. She was basically the sole-executive of MODE and had to rein in constant chaos that always seemed to appear daily.

9. Rainbow Johnson – Blackish

When it comes down to it, Rainbow is always the voice of reason. She’s the more liberal side of her and Dre and truly believes her kids could grow up in a colorless society. She’s the positive millennial mom all of us need.

8. Clair Huxtable – The Cosby Show

The elegantly tough, engaging wife of Cliff always had a way of stealing the scene. As a lawyer, she rarely lost an argument and was known throughout the show for her singing ability and silly nature. She was the renaissance woman of mid-80s and we won’t forget it.

7.  Nyota Uhura – Star Trek

The translator and communications officer of the Enterprise, Uhura was one of the first characters of Africa descent in a non-menial featured role. She was a force to be reckoned with and always held her ground in a spaceship surrounded by men who couldn’t care less about their comrades dying or disappearing.

6.  Miranda Bailey – Grey’s Anatomy

The toughest resident in the surgical program at Seattle Grace, did not let her title stop her from whipping her interns into shape. Though at the beginning of the series she was portrayed as a demanding cold teacher, throughout the years we have seen a nurturing and vastly empathetic side that makes Miranda so special.

5. Raven Baxter – That’s So Raven

Raven Baxter was the sassy free spirited dream girl of the 90s. She was one of the most prominent character on Disney Channel at the time, and had the best one liners. Literally she was the original ‘nasty woman’, and a one who wasn’t afraid to cross uncomfortable topics, let’s all remember the runway episode where she read that women for filth who said she was “too big to be a model”. Ugh, we miss the old Raven!

4. Suzanne Warren – Orange Is The New Black

Suzanne Warren, famously known as “crazy eyes” captivated audiences with her genuine curiosity and unique look at the world. She’s developed into a vigorous spit fire that still cares about her freedom and her friends when everything in her work dis falling apart.

3. Michonne – The Walking Dead

If you haven’t seen The Walking Dead, let me just tell you, Michonne is a bad-ass. Not only is she a versatile warrior, but she’s a proven commander, and zombie killer as well. She’s hard-shelled but has a soft spot for children and people she believes to be weaker than her. She’s the apocalypse mom you never knew you needed.

2. Julia Baker – Julia

Julia Baker is one of the most important black female characters to grace the small screen. She was the FIRST lead black women of her own TV show in history, and got a lot of slack for it. Diahann Carroll who played her was ostracized from the black community as the show depicted a black woman without the systematic oppression of racism. Still, this character created a revolution that black women could helm shows by themselves.

1.  Annalise Keating – How To Get Away With Murder

Viola Davis SLAYS every role she is given, but Annalise Keating serves a specific purpose from the rest. She’s calculated, honest, and doesn’t let anyone boss her around. Her character shifts constantly into different archetypes leaving the viewers really thinking, “Who is the real Ms. Keating?” and honestly we might never know. But girl, that scene where she takes off her wig to then accuse her husband of cheating is the most sickening performance we’ve seen yet!

February 4th: It’s Your Birthday, Bitch!

#BornThisDay: Equestrian, Lee Pearson

February 4, 1974Lee Pearson has had 14 major operations. He lives with plastic splints around his legs from his hip to his heel. Pearson was born with Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita. He is also one of the most successful and flamboyant athletes in history, but he states:

“My greatest achievement is ever getting on a horse in the first place.”

Pearson was born in Staffordshire, England.  His mother was a psychiatric nurse. His father drove trucks. When he was born, he was placed in a hospital broom closet for three days, not expected to live. His mother had been sedated, but on the third day she wanted to know if she had a baby that was alive or not. Pearson:

“They pushed her in a wheelchair down to a broom cupboard with mattresses, and buckets, and mops. There was a cot at the back with a blanket over it. So mum took a deep breath, because she thought if she reacted badly, the professionals would take me away.”

He wasn’t able to stand on his feet until he was 6-years-old. But today, Pearson is one of Britain’s most decorated people in sports, with 11 Paralympic Olympic Gold Medals in the equestrian sport of Dressage, plus a dozen European and World titles.

Pearson came out of a second closet when he told his parents that he was gay at 20-years-old, making him one of the planet’s most visible openly gay athletes.

In 2014, ahead of a planned trip to protest the anti-gay policies in Russia before the Sochi Winter Olympics, Pearson dared our president’s boyfriend, Vladimir Putin, to throw him in jail. Pearson:

“Then the Prime Minister and my country would have to get involved and that would add to the embarrassment for Russia.”

No angel, Pearson tells tales of his hard-partying ways:

“I fell asleep last night at my own party as I was so drunk. My boyfriend made the drinks and he makes them far too strong. Someone brought round five different strengths of curry which I ate and then was so bloated I lay down and was gone. Curry, Malibu and Coke, that’s my preparation.”

In 1980, when Pearson was just 6-years-old, Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher carried Pearson up the staircase at 10 Downing Street to present him with the Children Of Courage Award.

The same condition that left Pearson unable to climb the stairs made his talent for equestrian sports particularly tough. His first horse was no horse at all, but a donkey named Annie, given to him when he was a kid because his older brothers had bikes that they rode around their farm.

“I couldn’t pedal a bicycle so she was my hairy BMX bike. There are no muscles in my arms to actually bend my arms. I can pull with the shoulders and I got into riding because I couldn’t pedal a bicycle.”

It took his parents two years to save enough money to buy him a pony and begin riding lessons.

When he was 22-years-old, Pearson took a desk job, but when he watched a broadcast of the 1996 Atlanta Paralympics Games on television he decided to try riding as a sport, even though he was allergic to horses. He still must take antihistamines daily.

He admits that he was initially reticent about competing in a disability sport:

“I was actually quite phobic. I kind-of panicked if anybody in a wheelchair was rolling towards me. I was like a straight man in a gay club. I was up against a wall thinking, ‘Oh my god, these disabled people are everywhere!’ But the great thing is, if I’m discussing disability now, I know what it’s like to look at someone a bit different. I know about being ignorant about it, and I also know the next level of being frightened about disability.”

“The Paralympic Games actually turned my whole mentality around about disability. When you’re in the Paralympic athletes’ village and there are 4,000 disabled people, you stop seeing disability. Totally.”

At his Paralympic debut, the Sydney 2000 Games, he won all three gold medals in his sport. He did the same in Athens in 2004, having won a bunch of able-bodied events in between. Pearson took home three gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Summer Games equestrian events.

But, a year before the London Olympic Games in 2012, Pearson broke his back in a training accident. He recovered enough to compete at that year’s Paralympics and help win a team gold medal, but he missed out on individual titles and the able-bodied events

A year later, he was dropped from the British team for the European Championships. Pearson and the British team say that is testament to the exceptional talent in equestrian sports in Britain, and the increasingly tough competition internationally.

But Pearson soon returned, and at the World Equestrian Games, he once again won all three gold medals. As an undisputed star of British equestrianism and a gold medalist, Pearson is not the sort of guy to get real excited about a silver medal. At last summer’s Olympic Games in Rio, he lost out on gold in the individual Dressage final, just as he had in London, to his Austrian rival Pepo Puch. But, he stood on the podium and watched as his temperamental 12-year-old horse Zion be presented with a prize rosette.

“I love Zion. He did his best and I couldn’t have asked for any more. I am so, so proud of my horse. This is for him and for me.”

The silver medal in Rio was number 13 in Pearson’s Paralympic career. He said that he has been successful for so long because:

“Balance, education, stupidity, bravery? It’s all of those things. You are dealing with three-quarters of a ton of very particular animal. Horses can walk down the middle of the motorway and be perfectly content, or a leaf can fall from a tree and they can bolt from it. The act of making it look easy can be strenuous. People have accused our sport of being one where the horses do all the hard work. I say to them, ‘OK, you go for a ride, and you’ll be walking like me afterwards.’ It’s exhausting.”

“I’m a nutter for speed but horses give you the freedom, movement and energy that pushing a wheelchair certainly can’t.”

Pearson has been open in his criticism of the British honors system: though he has collected an MBE, OBE and CBE, he has stated that all those gold medals would have brought a knighthood for any able-bodied Olympian. But, he insists that honors and medals are not his motivation. Pearson:

“My motivation is paying the mortgage. No joke. Just riding horses every day keeps me going. And that threat of losing my house.”

“I may daydream occasionally that I’ve got a gorgeous, muscled body, but I don’t have a choice about my disability just as I don’t have a choice about being gay. I love who I am and certainly don’t have a problem about being gay.”

Gay Porn Star Colby Keller Voted for Trump & Wants To See America Come Crashing Down

Colby Keller isn’t just another gay porn star or a Republican – he’s a communist who HATES the Democratic party. Keller did vote for Trump though, and told Mel magazine,

I’m a little surprised he’s as aggressive on ‘the wall’ as he said he would be, but I’m not surprised people like Trump and corporate America are going to the lengths they are in a system that’s no longer defensible. They’ll stop at nothing.

At least Trump is inspiring people to resist a really corrupt economic system that is fucking us all over.

Hillary Clinton would have been four more years of Barack Obama, continuing all of the horrible neoliberal policies of the Bush administration and of her husband — policies that have bankrupted the American people and people around the world.“

Keller sounds like he wants to be like a homo-sexier version Steve Bannon and like Trump’s right hand, see our institutions come crashing down. He likes the idea of America falling apart. He says,

Things will get a lot worse and that will get us to a point where we need to be.

The Democratic Party’s diabolical politics don’t serve the interests of the American people and that’s why [Trump voters] acted out. It’s going to take someone like Donald Trump to get people to overthrow the system.”

Keller studied art at Maryland Institute College and in 2014, he made a video project by filming himself having sex in each of the 50 states called, Colby Does America. And his vote for Trump is fucking all 50 states again.

He’s all in HBO’s High Maintenance and in the first episode of the newest season, Keller plays a former crystal meth addict. But his income still comes from porn. He’s in Tucson now, where he lives with his boyfriend and three straight men.

I have friends who know him, and I think I get where he’s coming from. He’s a narcissistic contrarian that is also a huge fame whore. He might be smarter than your average porn star but he sees himself ABOVE society’s norms and conventions, so he makes money doing gay porn and off the community, but then has no regard for LGBT rights because, in the end, he’s protected by his white privledge. No doubt, he’s athletic, self-centered AND hot –fitting, because he displays Olympic-level selfishness.

#LGBTQ: India’s First Trans Model Slays the Runway in Mumbai

Transgender model Anjali Lama is walking the runway this week in India’s premier fashion show, Lakme Fashion Week in Mumbai.

Ever since I started modelling it’s been my dream to appear in a fashion week. My dream has come true and I feel so happy and grateful.

The name I carved out as the first transgender model in India wasn’t an easy process. I had to work hard, mentally handle stress and pressure. I struggled a lot.”

Before Lama was signed to an agency in Kathmandu, she was living as a trans woman in secret but someone discovered this and told her family who sadly cut her off.

My mother, to some extent, was more accepting but there really wasn’t much awareness then. There is more awareness and acceptance now in Nepal, and that has helped more people like me to come out.

Fashion week aims to promote inclusivity and pass the constrained boundaries of gender, size and beauty in fashion and Lama wants to support that message, and hopes her public presence will inspire other trans people to come out.

Some transgenders may feel scared to come out. If they come out after being inspired by me … (and) think ‘I can be like her’ and then believe in themselves, then I’ll feel very proud of myself.

Brava, you look gorgeous and powerful and are OWNING that catwalk!

Yes, they are good looking guys with great bodies (and some odd names. Look out for Sirri Deniz Batman, above) but there’s something else hypnotic about watching this televised Best Model contest in Turkey. Maybe it’s the cut away to the intense concentration of the audience or Gaga’s Perfect Illusion, that never stops I don’t know. I want it on a loop so it can play as I go about my day at home. It is very soothing and in these crazy times, I’ll take it. (Dogan Bayraktar, FTW!)

Watch.

#DidUNaziThatComing?!: One of Trump’s Harshest Critics? Would You Believe Dr. Seuss?

$

Dr. Seuss, the German-American cartoonist and author, born Theodor Seuss Geisel, is well-known for his children’s books but not so much his political cartoons. For two years, starting in 1941, Geisel worked as a political cartoonist for the liberal New York newspaper PM, creating more than 400 cartoons on the subject of Nazis, Hitler‘s rise and World War II. These cartoons have been reemerging amid protests against Trump’s executive order barring immigrants and refugees from seven Muslim-majority countries.

The cartoons show the apparent naiveté about the dangers posed by Nazi Germany over 70 years ago, as well as a callousness regarding the lives of children who aren’t American citizens.

“America First” is nothing new. Geisel’s war cartoons highlight and lampoon isolationism, anti-Semitism, and racism. They skewer Hitler, Mussolini, and a variety of American nationalists, including Charles Lindbergh. And they feature Geisel’s fierce anti-authoritarianism and humanism that run through Dr. Seuss’s books.

By May 1941, Geisel was publishing as many as seven cartoons a week in PM. One called, “The Isolationist,” features a limerick, with a drawing of a whale suspending himself “safely” on top of a mountain, out of water, and thus out of danger. It reads,

Said a whale,
‘There is so much commotion
Such fights among fish in the ocean
I’m saving my scalp
Living high on an Alp
(Dear Lindy! He gave me the notion!)

As the cliché goes, history repeats itself, but somehow as obvious as things are in retrospect, we are doomed to repeat them it seems.
