16143106_679576682213973_2319170826162815701_nInspired by the Women’s March on Washington, a gay activist in New York City announced plans for a National Pride March. The LGBTQ protest will be held in D.C. on June 11.

David Bruinooge, 42, of Brooklyn, N.Y., announced it Facebook and created an event page for those interested in keeping up with the protest’s progress.

We urge all supporters, friends, and family to descend on DC for the Pride 2017 weekend (June 8-11th) to make sure our voices are heard.

I was watching the events [of the Women’s March] unfold on TV and I was very proud and inspired by all the women, the strong women in our country who were kind of taking this to the street and getting their voices heard,” Bruinooge told the Washington Blade. “And in the back of my mind as an openly gay man I thought the gay community should be doing something like this to follow up on the momentum.“

Ryan Bos, the executive director of the Capital Pride Alliance, is in touch with Bruinooge and is expected to work to bring the march into the fold of official Capital Pride events.

This will be an ALL-inclusive and peaceful event.

The last major LGBT protest in DC was the National Equality March in 2009, which called for full equality for LGBTQ people in all matters of civil law, in all 50 states. At that time, only five states had legal same-sex marriage.

January 27, 1965– Alan Cumming:

“I feel devastated that this has happened. If you voted for Donald Trump or not, if you are a Republican or a Democrat, you must acknowledge that it is a shocking time in American history that people of such vehemence, such racists… the fact that there is a man in the Oval Office who espouses clearly white supremacist views. That is a huge, massive shift, and I’m really very, very worried about the implications of that and what’s going to happen. I’m obviously not very happy about the situation. But I think it has happened now and we have to try to understand why it has happened and to make sure it doesn’t happen again. That’s what’s important. He is our president. And we have to be vigilant to make sure he is not going to implement all the unconstitutional things he said he would in his campaign. And I think it’s a question of being strong, being vigilant. Of picking up the pieces, trying to find out why this happened.”

In spring 2014, I had an extended stay in the hospital when six months of aggressive chemotherapy left me without much of an immune system. I was kept in isolation. Doctors, nurses and visitors were required to wear a hazmat suit to enter my room in a wing that I had to myself on the Oncology floor. Not much was interesting to me as I studied the slow drip-drip of the Morphine IV. Craving distraction, I turned on the television just as an episode of The Good Wife (2009-2016) was starting and by the time three more episodes had gone by, I was hooked on the series (and the narcotic). Why hadn’t I engaged with this show before, with a cast filled with Broadway regulars, bringing their characters to life with the help of smart, economic, wry writing? I was especially drawn to Alan Cumming’s blunt political strategist, Eli Gold. When I was back home, The Husband and watched 113 episodes in 30 days. I guess you could say that I am a fan.

The other evening while channel surfing, we caught the film The Anniversary Party (2002), written, produced, directed and starring Jennifer Jason Leigh and her pal, Cumming, and we decided to stay with it, although we had rented it on VCR 15 years ago. I kept thinking about the career of Cumming. I first became aware of him in 1998 with his Tony Award winning turn as the emcee in the Sam Mendes/Rob Marshall revival of the landmark musical Cabaret. He certainly was a very arresting figure when I saw him on that Tony broadcast. I was intrigued. I wanted to know more.

Cumming studied at the Royal Scottish Academy Of Music And Drama. He was soon being celebrated in his homeland for both his work on a Scottish television series and his stand-up act.

He played roles with the Royal Shakespeare Company including Romeo, and at the National Theatre. His portrayal of the title character in Hamlet at the Donmar Warehouse in London caused a sensation. In London and on Broadway, Cumming has performed in works by Euripedes, Noël  Coward, Bertolt Brecht, and Anton Chekov. He played in a one-person production of Macbeth to great acclaim in NYC and London in 2012.

In films he has worked as a superhero in X-2 (2002), a Bond villain in Golden Eye (1995) and a Jane Austin guy in Emma (1996).

But, his main image seems to be as a naughty impish scamp, a persona that always holds my interest. Cumming has done nothing to discourage this, playing a variety of louche characters: Dionysus, Mack The Knife, and The Devil. He has even played the Pope. He is a Tony and Olivier Award winner, and has been nominated for a Golden Globe, Emmy Award and SAG Award. Cumming is also the author of a semi-autobiographical novel Tommy’s Tale (2002) about a sex obsessed, drug ridden bisexual and an engaging, well written memoir Not My Father’s Son (2014). He has appeared in a provocative campaign promoting Cumming, his special scent, and its sequel 2nd Cumming.

I downloaded his really good album Blue Car, (2009) with songs of love and loss by such songwriters as John Bucchino (A Catered Affair), William Finn (Falsettos) and Jimmy Webb, as well as originals by Cumming. I am impressed with his non-theatre singing and his surprisingly touching interpretations. Cumming is currently touring in his concert Alan Cumming Sings Sappy Songs, which features some very special A-list surprise guest stars joining him in each city. It plays at Disney Concert Hall in Downtown Los Angeles this Sunday evening, January 29th.

Cumming has long been an outspoken supporter/activist for Civil Rights and LGBTQ Rights and HIV/AIDS causes including amfAR and Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, Human Rights Campaign, Planned Parenthood, The Matthew Shepard Foundation, GLAAD and The Trevor Project. His special passion is for Intact America/Norm-UK, an anti-circumcision campaign and education organization.

I can be so very juvenile, I still giggle every time I type his last name. Cumming lives in the East Village in NYC along with his husband, illustrator Grant Shaffer, and their dogs Jerry and Lala.

“I have a healthy sexual appetite and a healthy imagination. I still define myself as a bisexual even though I have chosen to be with Grant. I’m sexually attracted to the female form even though I am with a man and I just feel that bisexuals have a bad rap.”

He is supremely entertaining on talk shows and he gives good Tweets. I don’t know how I could possibly think that Cumming could be groovier, until I discovered that his portrait was hung in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in the spot previously occupied by Queen Elizabeth II.

Cumming is very concerned about what has happened in his adopted country the past few months. I don’t think POTUS and his merry band of plunderers would like him.

cumming 3

“Since I have come to America I have slowly realized that unless you have money you are not guaranteed health or education or, indeed, justice. This is a country that has allowed a system to emerge where only the wealthiest are sure of those three basic tenets of any decent democracy.  It is a disgusting and awful truth that we should all be ashamed of. For we, citizens all, have allowed this to happen.”

“And now, after decades of this lack, this slide into a system of mostly financially enabled civil rights, after years of right wing governments encouraging anti-intellectualism and religious brainwashing, we find ourselves potentially being held hostage by the very swathe of the population we have helped create by turning a blind eye and worried only about ourselves”

“Trump’s rise is for the most part due to a huge class of uneducated people voting for him. People who, through no fault of their own, do not have further education as an option. People who do not read, who do not analyze, who are easy targets for jingoism and propaganda – both subjects that Trump, like every sleazy bully before him, has learned to become expert in.”

Andy Cohen has a knack of choosing enticing women to join the Real Housewives franchise, and he thinks Kellyanne Conway should be his next pick. He appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers and discussed his obsession with the enigmatic counselor.

‘I’m begging her to just consider a spot on the Housewives if she gets bored,’ Cohen said this week during a visit to Late Night With Seth Meyers.

‘She’d be amazing. Alternative facts, I’m waiting for (the Housewives) to bust it out. I’m taping the Beverly Hills reunion in a few weeks and I’m waiting for Lisa Rhinna to be like, “Well no, that’s an alternative fact.” (via GayStarNews)

Cohen is not dismayed by Conway’s alarming statements, he stated that her ‘alternative facts’ quote is his, “favorite statement ever made in the history of ever”.

#GirlCrush: Syd tha Kyd from The Internet

If you haven’t heard of the band The Internet you are lacking some neo-soul love that you never knew you needed. Odd Future members Syd the Kyd and Matt Martians have released three studio albums and three EPs since The Internet’s conception in 2011.

Now with a reigning five touring members, Syd Tha Kyd has a solo debut album titled Fin arriving later this year. But let me tell you, if you haven’t checked out her sultry and smooth music videos, you need to start now. Syd adorns herself with androgynous clothing with a soft butch touch but she has a voice that rival’s Solange‘s silky nodes. Her music is delicate with an alluring approach that she uses describes reticent truths of her life.

The best part about The Internet’s music is that most of their songs are about lesbian love. Syd prefers defining herself as ‘gay’ woman, and uses music to describe the type of love she experiences. Yes, you could take Syd’s lyrics and apply them to a heterosexual couple, but the fact that it’s a woman singing about another, is something the lesbian community doesn’t get to hear often.

She is also super responsive and understands the hegemonic forces that surround her image!

I think that’s a healthy perspective. It’s also pretty rare to have a woman singing to other women. We’re still at this time where there are lots of references to gay women in music but many times they’re portrayed as just accessories to straight men.

I hadn’t thought about that but it’s interesting because I feel like it’s a blessing and curse sometimes, honestly. I’m not going to sing about men because it’s not real, but I think that sometimes the way I look and the fact that I’m a female singing about females can work against us because [society is] still transitioning and there’s a lot of people that aren’t comfortable with homosexuality in general and with female homosexuality. My image and me being a female who wears men’s clothing and has a short haircut, it’s something that a lot of people don’t see often. I believe the term is “stud.” I don’t really refer to myself as one because I don’t relate to that many of them but I get called that. And let’s be real most studs are seen in a certain light where they aren’t seen the same way as everyone else. There are no famous studs that I can think of. Yeah, there are androgynous women everywhere like Ellen DeGeneres but most people wouldn’t call her a stud. And it also kind of makes you question labels because what is a stud? A black female who dresses like that? Or a female who dresses kind of thuggish? I don’t know and that’s part of the reason I don’t try to relate to that term because well, what is it? (via Papermag)

And just looked at Syd’s pure androgynous perfection!

betsy-devos1As you may have heard, PresiDONT Trump’s choice for Education Secretary – who is the principal adviser to the President on federal policies, programs, and activities related to education in the United States – is UNQUALIFIED rich lady Betsy DeVos. This week is the last week to call your senator to STOP them from voting for her as the United States Education Secretary!

We should ALL call our senators to make our voices heard (here is a complete list of senators and their phone numbers), but we REALLY need our friends in Tennessee, Wyoming, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Kentucky, Maine, Louisiana, Indiana, Utah, Kansas, and Alaska! Why?

From our friends at Autostraddle:

These are the Republicans on the Senate HELP (Health, Education Labor & Pensions) Committee. You’ve probably seen videos with the Democrats of this committee, people like Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and Al Franken. They already think DeVos is harmful and ridiculous. You can call them too and tell them good job; they don’t hear that enough! But for this action to have a snowball’s chance in Hades, it’s the Republicans we need.

The Senate HELP committee can choose not to move Betsy DeVos forward. If they do that, it forces the administration to pick again. If they pick someone just as incompetent, well. We’ll be back here doing this again.

The numbers for the HELP committee Republicans are:

Lamar Alexander (TN) – 202-224-4944
Michael B. Enzi (WY) – 202-224-3424
Richard Burr (NC) – 202-224-3154
Johnny Isakson (GA) – 202-224-3643
Rand Paul (KY) – 202-224-4343
Susan Collins (ME) – 202-224-2523
Bill Cassidy, M.D. (LA) – 202-224-5824
Todd Young (IN) 202-224-5623
Orrin Hatch (UT) – 202-224-5251
Pat Roberts (KS) – 202-224-4774
Lisa Murkowski (AK) – 202-224-6665

#FBF: A Dedication to Our Dictator – “F*ck You” by Lily Allen

January 28th: It’s YOUR Birthday, Bitch!

#BornThisDay: Writer, Colette

January 28, 1873– Colette:

“Do foolish things, but do them with enthusiasm”.

Her name was Sidonie Gabrielle Claudine Colette Gauthier-Villars de Jouvanel Goudeket, but smartly, she went simply by Colette.

Colette put herself out to the world as an ingénue, an innocent young wife of the Paris belle époque, a scandalous lesbian, a risqué music-hall performer, a serious novelist of prodigious output, a theatre critic, a beautician, and a world-class seducer of both sexes.

Her writing is playful, teasing, and sexually suggestive. She is an elegant stylist, perceptive and shrewd.

Colette’s 50 novels and collections of short stories were popular with housewives, shop girls and intellectuals. Her writing emphasis was on women’s’ obstacles in love and she lived as passionately as she wrote. Sex was front and center in her writing, embellished with a spicy style and sparkling dialogue. She wrote about love, licit and illicit.

When Colette was 6-years-old, her politician father permitted her to try to match him, wine glass for wine glass, while he stumped to local bars looking for votes. Her free-thinking mother taught her the importance of being a female, and she shocked the neighbors by refusing to wear mourning clothes when her husband died.

When Colette was 20-years-old, she fell in love with the writer Henri Gauthier-Villars who took her from her village in Burgundy to Paris to be his wife. He was a popular writer of pulp novels under the pen-name Willy, and was famous around Paris for being a cad.

He encouraged Colette to write down stories about her childhood. He liked what he read and after some suggestions, he sent them off to an editor under his own name. The resulting series of Claudine novels made Gauthier-Villars rich and famous. He would lock Colette in a room until she turned out more stories. He was a vile, ruthless man. When Colette became ill and nearly died during their first year of marriage, Gauthier-Villars simply began a long string of affairs. He forced Colette to acknowledge his mistresses and to entertain them in their home. After 13 years, Colette had enough and she divorced him.

She continued writing books, but under her own name, but she had less success and had to find other ways of making a living.

Colette became a music-hall dancer, which gave her new material for books. She worked as a theatre critic, political writer, fashion critic and she wrote a cooking column. She published her first novel, Dialogues De Betes, under her own name. It sold well and received good reviews. Colette began to explore the depths and direction of her own sexual identity. But, with Chéri (1920), Colette wrote about a character entirely different from herself. She adapted Chéri for the stage and played the leading role herself.

Portraying messy sexual boundaries on stage gave Colette the perfect opportunity to explore her own feelings. Performing as a dancer gave her the chance to meet new people in an exciting new venue while providing her an opportunity to earn a living, not easy for a divorced woman in late 19th century Paris.

“Solitude, freedom, my pleasant and painful work as mime and dancer, tired and happy muscles, and, by way of a change from all that, the new anxiety about earning my meals, my clothes, and my rent, such, all of a sudden, was my lot.  But with it too went a savage defiance, a disgust for the milieu where I had lived and suffered, a stupid fear of man, of men, and of women too.”

Colette’s career in the theatre gave her the freedom to act on her own vexing fantasies. Working as a performer on stage provided her with the opportunity to explore her voracious sexual appetite, and Colette did just that.

In a performance at the famed Moulin Rouge, Colette caused a near riot by miming sex acts on stage. She had affairs with other women. One of her lovers was Emperor Napoleon III’s niece, Mathilde De Morny.  Colette moved into De Morny’s château. After a brief, unhappy marriage, De Morny became the Marquise de Belboeuf, although she was better known in Paris lesbian circles as “Monsieur Belboeuf”.

De Morny supported Colette with money and introduced her to the high society crowd. She also showed Colette the gay underground of drag queens, beautiful men and cross-dressing women. Colette gave De Morny love, affection, and plenty of sex. She also gave De Mornay a role in her act at the Moulin Rouge, with Colette playing an Egyptian mummy who unwrapped her bandages and boldly made love to De Mornay who played the role of a male archaeologist. The act was banned by the censors.

Colette loved the publicity. It also set the pattern for her next decade, performing and writing, and revealing her gayness.

In the 1930s, Colette was a success and widely regarded as the greatest writer in France.  She became the first woman admitted to the prestigious Goncourt Academy.

In 1935, Colette married again. Her new husband was a jewelry salesman who had lost his business during the Great Depression.  He was Jewish, and the anti-Semitic attitudes of the era made it difficult for him to find work.  Colette supported him financially and helped hide him during the Nazi occupation of Paris during WW II.

Throughout the war years, Colette continued writing.  She published her most famous novel, Gigi (1945) when she was 72-years-old.  Three years later, the novel was adapted into a French film. In 1951, it was adapted for the Amercian stage by Anita Loos, and was produced on Broadway starring Audrey Hepburn, who was selected personally by Colette for the role. In 1958, it was remade as a musical film by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe, directed by Vincente Minnelli, starring Leslie Caron and Louis Jourdan. It won the Academy Award for Best Picture. I seem to be alone in this opinion, but am not a big fan of this film. The story of a child being groomed to be a prostitute makes me a bit uneasy and the score sounds like the cast-offs from My Fair Lady. I much prefer the excellent film version of Chéri (2009), directed by Stephen Frears, and starring Michelle Pfeiffer.

Colette was a lifelong passionate lover of animals of all kinds, but especially cats. Felines figure in many of her stories and her novel Dialogue Des Betes is presented as conversation between a cat and a dog. It is sweet and insightful. Le Chatte (1932) is a curious story about a love triangle between a man, a woman and, obviously, a cat.

Sadly, Colette never saw the musical that is sort of her legacy. She left this world in 1954.  She was given an official French State Funeral, highly unusual for a woman at that time. Thousands of fans attended the service.

Colette was never admitted to the Academie Francaise… because it is for men only.

Trump Bans 134 Million People from Entering U.S. (But NOT From Countries He Does Business With)

Yes, just one week after being inaugurated, President Donald Trump has banned more than 134 million people from entering the country.

Trump barred citizens of seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the US for at least the next 90 days by executive order, which is likely just a first step toward establishing a broader ban.

It’s unclear how many more countries will be added to the list, but the official said the administration will be “very aggressive” as it decides who else to add to the list.

Asked what criteria the administration will consider as it looks to expand the ban beyond the initial seven countries, the official said simply the

“mandate is to keep America safe. We are not going to take any risks.”

That’s just one part of the controversial executive order Trump signed Friday called:

Protecting the nation from foreign terrorist entry into the United States.”

According to CNN, here’s a breakdown of what the executive order does.

• Trump banned citizens of seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the US for at least the next 90 days.

• The executive order bars all people hailing from Iraq, Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen — or at least 134 million people, based on 2013 World Bank census data — from entering the United States. Those countries were named in a 2016 law concerning immigration visas as “countries of concern.”

• But the executive order also makes clear those seven countries are just a starting point for a likely broader ban.

• The order exempts diplomats and members of international organizations from the ban.

• Orders review of countries to be added to the ban

• The order also directs the secretary of Homeland Security to conduct a 30-day review to determine which countries do not provide “adequate information” for its citizens to be issued visas to enter the US.

Trump also stopped the admission of all refugees to the United States for four months.

“I hereby proclaim that the entry of nationals of Syria as refugees is detrimental to the interests of the United States and thus suspend any such entry,” Trump declared in Friday’s executive order.
While Trump during his campaign called for banning Syrian refugees from the US — decrying their entry as a potential “Trojan horse”

“In order to protect Americans, the United States must ensure that those admitted to this country do not bear hostile attitudes toward it and its founding principles,” Trump states in the opening section of the executive order.

The United States cannot, and should not, admit those who do not support the Constitution, or those who would place violent ideologies over American law. In addition, the United States should not admit those who engage in acts of bigotry or hatred…or those who would oppress Americans of any race, gender, or sexual orientation.”

Conspicuously, Trump doesn’t hold any business interests in any of the countries on the list, but holds major stakes in several of those excluded from it like Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Dubai.

The order suspending the issuing of U.S. visas or travel permits to people from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen… and not a single American was killed on U.S. soil by citizens from any of those countries between 1975 and 2015, according to statistics.

God help us all… (via CNN)

Michelle Bachman Says #WomansMarch Was Part of a Radical Islamist Plot to Bring U.S. Down

Remember that hag, former congresswoman Michele Bachmann? She recently spoke with blogger Cheri Berens to say the say that last week’s worldwide Women’s March on Washington was a radical Islamist plot to bring down America, according to Right Wing Watch. Bachmann said,

People understand Islam abhors homosexuality, yet they often join forces in protests with gay activists. Black Lives Matters, the gay agenda, as well as Islamic supremacism, all seek domination over American freedoms.

They cannot reach their aims separately, but they can realize the fall of individual liberties if they work together. Once liberties fall, the groups break with each other in a race to impose their particular views on the American populace.

Causing liberties to fall is a long-term project, and they will use whatever allies they can get to realize that phase of their goals.”

Berens also claimed that the pro-choice rights aspect of the demonstration was also part of a plot by Muslims.

They want American women to have abortions. They want the non-Muslim population to be stagnant while the Muslim population grows. Numbers mean power.

Very powerful Muslim Brotherhood organizations helped organize and promote this event targeting very specific groups. A post to her website, called “Women’s March for Islam,” Berens goes off even further on these nutty ideas.

Bachmann recently said she hopes Trump can reverse the “ungodly” and “evil” gay agenda.

#WTF?!: Texas Mosque Set On Fire Hours After Trumps Muslim Ban

A Texas mosque was set on fire just hours after Donald Trump signed an executive order restricting migration from Muslim-majority countries.

The Islamic Center of Victoria was set on fire around 2 AM today. Fire Marshal Tom Legler said he had no theories about the cause of the fire, but he is seeking assistance from state and federal fire investigators.

Shahid Hashmi, the president of the center said,

It’s a house of worship.

Hashmi said the center is home to over 100 congregation members. No one was injured in the fire. Tomorrow the center plans to hold a public prayer service in the lawn to,

pray for peace & safety for all.

Just hours before the fire, on Friday afternoon, Trump signed the “Protection Of The Nation From Foreign Terrorist Entry Into The United States” order. People holding “green cards”, making them legal permanent U.S. residents, are included in President Donald Trump’s executive action temporarily barring people from seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the United States. Gillian Christensen, acting Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman, said,

It will bar green card holders.

The executive order bars all people hailing from Iraq, Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen but not countries coincidentally, that Trump happens to do business with like Saudi Arabia, The United Arab Emerites and Dubai.

Those banned countries were named in a 2016 law concerning immigration visas as “countries of concern.” But the executive order also makes clear those seven countries are just a starting point for a likely broader ban. (via Daily News)
