Screen Shot 2017-01-25 at 7.06.50 PM
This is my third post about Mary Tyler Moore today. The first to say she as gravely ill and then not long after to post that she had died. There are not many people that are universally loved, whether in or out of the entrainment business, but MTM was one of them.

My parents were divorced and when I was 12 I went to live may Dad and his then girlfriend, June Evans who I thought was just like Mary –a smart, independent career woman. Mary worked in the newsroom at WJM and June was a legal secretary who worked for Leon Jaworkski who was one of the special prosecutor’s of President Richard M. Nixon. Along with my friend Ronnie Cooke, whose Dad who worked at NASA and packed the moon-landing flag, this was as close to celebrity that I had ever gotten.

My old friend Marilyn Suzanne Miller wrote for The Mary Tyler Moore Show and later went on to write some of the best stuff for Gilda Radner on SNL and Tracey Ullman on her show. But THE funniest episode of just about any sitcom ever (Seinfeld, Will & Grace and 30 Rock have come close…) but the funniest to me is the Chuckles the Clown episode. If you aren’t familiar, Chuckles is crushed while dressed as a peanut and no one can stop making jokes about it. Mary is appalled. This goes on until the funeral where, well, I won’t spoil it but her behavior there is somewhat shocking.

A little song, a little dance, a little seltzer down your pants…

Watch.

January 26th: It’s YOUR Birthday, Bitch!

#BornThisDay: Paul Newman

newman

January 26, 1925Paul Newman:

“I picture my epitaph: ‘Here lies Paul Newman, who died a failure because his eyes turned brown.'”

I have earned the ire of a lot of people by finding the gay angle when writing about the fascinating figures I write about. There are plenty of anecdotes to be found about alleged bisexual trysts between Newman and the usual suspects: James Dean, Sal Mineo, Tennessee Williams, even Steve McQueen. Who knows for certain?

Famously, when asked once if he was ever tempted to be unfaithful to his wife, Joanne Woodward, Newman replied:

“Why go out for hamburger when you’ve got steak at home?”

Joan Crawford, who had several liaisons with Newman during his first marriage, dismissed that remark, saying:

“What a clever thing to say, but how true is it? First, I think Woodward is hamburger, not steak. As for Paul, he dines out frequently and on the most succulent filet mignon, from what I hear.”

Several of his friends and associates have claimed to have known that Newman was bisexual, including Eartha Kitt, and Janice Rule, who played opposite Newman in the Broadway version of Picnic (1953). Shelley Winters claimed to have had a threesome with Newman and Marlon Brando.

One of Newman’s best performances was in Cat On A Hot Tin Roof (1958), where he plays Brick, a repressed homo. James Dean had been originally cast in the role, but he died in that famous car crash before production began. In the film version, all the direct gay references were removed from the Tennessee Williams’ script to satisfy the production codes. Richard Brook’s screenplay dances around the real reasons Brick and Cat (Elizabeth Taylor) haven’t had sex in years, but dialogue about the suicide of Brick’s especially close football buddy Skipper remained.

Newman told Tennessee Williams:

“The role of Brick is perfect for me. All my life I’ve been split into two different directions. One side of me wants to live life with my gay football buddy Skipper, the other side is tempted to fuck the living shit out of Maggie the Cat and be the heterosexual stud most of my fans want me to be.”

The Left Handed Gun (1958), features Newman as outlaw Billy The Kid. Written by Gore Vidal, a close friend of Newman and Woodward (the three of them shared a house for years), the screenplay depicted Billy as gay. But, in Arthur Penn’s final version, Billy’s relationship with his murdered mentor is left ambiguous.

In 1959, he returned to Broadway, and Tennessee Williams, in Sweet Bird Of Youth. After that, Newman abandoned the theatre for 33 years, to the dismay of Woodward, who believed that stage discipline would make him less reliant on his special charm and the mannerisms that were, for some critics, becoming too reliable.

Newman’s own contradictory character makes his movie star persona seem superficial. He was a skilled, serious actor, but he was also one of the most beautiful men to appear on screen.

He was also a producer, film and stage director, a race car driver, a political activist and a philanthropist. He contributed more money to charities, in relation to his own wealth, than any other American in the 20th century.

Newman said that he was happiest behind the wheel of a racing car and noted that his athleticism found its perfect outlet in this sport. As a producer and co-founder of a production company, he was responsible for many of his own films and directed six films, four of them starring his wife, Joanne Woodward. One of them brought him an Oscar nomination, just one of nine.

In 1982, he founded, initially as a modest venture, Newman’s Own, a company that makes products like pasta sauces and popcorn based on his own home recipes. Newman’s Own now makes over 50 products. Newman devoted the company’s entire profits to causes throughout the world. They have raised more than $300 million.

Newman was actively involved in the project that received funding through Newman’s Own, including the Hole In The Wall Gang summer camps, that he started for underprivileged kids. In 1999, he returned to the theatre in the two-character play Love Letters, opposite Woodward. The play raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for land conservation in Connecticut where the couple lived.

Newman was never shy about his politics. He donated one million dollars to the leftist magazine The Nation; he had a long-term involvement in Civil Rights. He narrated of the documentary King: A Filmed Record (1970), about Martin Luther King Jr. He campaigned against the war in Vietnam and supported Eugene McCarthy’s 1968 Presidential campaign. He was vigorous in his opposition to Richard Nixon and was proud of being among the Top 20 on Nixon’s enemy list.

Newman:

“I’m a supporter of gay rights. And not a closet supporter, either. From the time I was a kid, I have never been able to understand attacks upon the gay community.”

But, mostly we remember him for his screen career. He made more than 50 features, 11 opposite Woodward. With those blue eyes, insouciant smile, and always slim, athletic body, he was simply all that.

newman 3

From 1943 to 1946 Newman served in the US Navy. After WW II, he attended Kenyon College and then Yale Drama School. He planned to be a theatre teacher, but he was spotted at Yale by NYC agents, moved to Manhattan and took classes The Actors’ Studio. He made a successful Broadway debut, originally as an understudy, in William Inge’s play Picnic where he met another understudy, Woodward. They fell in love, although Newman was married and had a young son.

In 1954, he had famously lost out to James Dean when director Elia Kazan screen-tested them both for the lead in East Of Eden. But in 1956, after Dean’s death, the role of the boxer Rocky Graziano, already planned for Dean, in Somebody Up There Likes Me went to him. The next year, Newman filmed The Long Hot Summer (1958), from a William Faulkner story, opposite Woodward. Newman divorced his first wife, and married his co-star.

Newman worked with the best directors, Alfred Hitchcock, Martin Scorsese, John Huston and Robert Altman, but often in their less interesting films. But there was Robert Rossen’s The Hustler (1961) with Newman in his most complex early role and a turning point in his career. He played Fast Eddie, a pool shark, and his performance cemented his screen persona, a mix of vulnerability and swagger. He was nominated for Academy Award, but lost. He played fast Eddie again 25 years later, opposite Tom Cruise, in The Color Of Money, winning his only acting Oscar.

There were more great performances: Hud (1963), Harper (1966), Cool Hand Luke (1967) and Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid (1969) with Robert Redford. In a decade, he starred in 18 films, as well as directing his first and best film, Rachel, Rachel (1968), starring Woodward.

He was best playing against type: Hud is selfish, Luke arrogant, Harper cynical and Butch was a killer. He brought a strength that made him, alongside Brando, an acceptable anti-hero of the period.

In 1969, at the height of his fame, Newman formed First Artists Productions with Barbra Streisand, Sidney Poitier, Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman. Each agreed to make three films, but only Newman fulfilled his obligation.

I thought he became especially handsome in middle-age, and my own favorite Newman performances are from this era: the washed-up detective The Drowning Pool (1976), a working-class guy in Absence Of Malice (1981), and a fading, alcoholic lawyer in The Verdict (1982), a role director Sidney Lumet remarked, required only minimal research.

newman older

His intense performance in The Verdict failed to get him that Oscar statue, a fact taken harder by his wife than by Newman. It was said that his politics and east coast-ness alienated him from the conservative Hollywood establishment. He took the next year off to concentrate on his race cars, but then he was awarded an honorary Oscar for Lifetime Achievement as a 60-years-old, an award usually given to the elderly in the industry. The following year, he skipped the Oscars only to win Best Actor for The Color Of Money. He received the Academy’s Jean Herscholt Award for his philanthropic work in 1993.

Newman seemed to have retired from acting, but in 1994, he took a supporting role as a bad guy in the Coen Brothers’ The Hudsucker Proxy and the lead in Robert Benton’s Nobody’s Fool, one of his best roles. It brought him another Oscar nomination

In 1995, when he was 70-years-old, he entered the 24-Hour Daytona Endurance Race, the oldest person ever to complete the event.

When he was 73-years-old, he played an old private eye with a drinking problem in Twilight (1998), giving a deep, melancholy performance, and at 77-years-old he took a juicy supporting role as a vicious mobster in Sam Mendes’ Road To Perdition (2002). It brought Newman another Oscar nomination and rave reviews. The same year he returned to Broadway as the Stage Manager in Thornton Wilder’s Our Town.

Still handsome, still strong, Newman’s final appearance was in the television drama Empire Falls (2005). He won an Emmy Award at 80-years-old. Newman is one of four actors to have been nominated for an Academy Award in five different decades. His final credits rolled in 2008, taken by lung cancer at 83-years-old.

By the way, I collect pictures of him. They are wonderful to look at.

“Maybe the best part about aging is that your liver can’t handle those beers at noon anymore.”

Riverdale, which premieres tonight on the CW is a campy mystery thriller based off the Archie comics that began all the way back in 1939! With a contemporary twist Complex dubbed the series, the new “O.C. with murder”, and that alone should get you titillated. Something different about this incarnation of the series is the inclusion of a new gay character Kevin Keller.

Back in 2010 Kevin Keller became Archie Comics’ latest breakout star when his arrival in Veronica issue #202 became the only Archie comic in the company’s history to sell out. Since then he has gone on to headline his own mini-series and is currently starring in his own digital title, Life With Kevin, which explores Kevin’s post-Riverdale life as a journalist in New York. Oscar Snubs: Living Legends and LGBT Icons That Were OverLooked For ‘Best Actress’ This Year

Kirsren

In the last week, Trump’s Death Eaters – ahem – administration has followed through with every heinous promise Emperor Cheeto projectile vomited during this trash fire of an election cycle. The day after Lord Voldemort – ahem – Trump was sworn in, Mother Earth rained cats and dogs and the Women’s March the following day was a global alarm that we need to honor, pay attention, stay woke, to women more than ever during this dismal time. And this mantra bleeds into the arts, as in an Oscar season where you can be a sexual predator (Casey Affleck) and still get nominated, I wanted to focus on three performances that were overlooked this year and ultimately snubbed for the golden statue. (*Note: I haven’t seen Moonlight yet and I’ve heard Janelle Monae is pure brilliance in it).

Check it out:

Molly Shannon in “Other People”

08-other-people.w1200.h630
To say Shannon was good in Other People is a MAJOR understatement, because she’s enigmatic. Every time she’s on screen, I couldn’t look away. She possesses that rare quality of being goofy, but VERY real, which works in her favor while playing Joanne, the dying mother of a gay son (played flawlessly by Jesse Plemmons). In a performance that could have easily been depressing AF, Shannon breathed hope into her final moments on screen and it’s something that I haven’t stopped thinking about since I watched it.

Other People is streaming on Netflix currently.

Taraji P. Hensen in “Hidden Figures”

08PHARRELL-figures-master675-v2
Granted, the movie is up for Best Picture (which is a HUGE accomplishment), and Octavia Spencer has been acknowledged (rightfully so), there’s two other performances that I feel like should’ve been recognized. The first is Taraji P. Hensen. She is the heart of this film and wildly pulls at your heart strings whether she’s tucking her kids into bed, flirting with her son-to-be-husband, or crying while telling her supervisor why she has to run to the East building to use the non-white bathrooms.

Hidden Figures is currently playing in theaters.

Kirsten Dunst in “Hidden Figures”

kirsten-dunst-hidden-figures-670x377.jpe

I wrote a piece “Why Won’t Hollywood Rightfully Award Kirsten Dunst” and anyone who knows me knows that she’s my girl and I don’t know why she’s always overlooked for her iconic work. Her character in Hidden Figures is a hard one to swallow (she’s a sort of racist supervisor – but with a heart of gold) and that’s a hard role to play. Beyond this trailblazing performance, she’s only 34 and has starred in over 35 films. Time and time again she’s given us epic performance after epic performance: Interview With A VampireVirgin SuicidesEternal SunshineMarie Antoinette (to name a few), which none ever garnered an Oscar nom (oddly enough). Let’s not even begin to mention all her cult classics: Drop Dead GorgeousDickBring It On, etc. But in 2014’s Lars Von Trier fantasy, her role as the depressed Justine – in Melancholia – earned her a much deserved Cannes (which is essentially France’s Oscars). Her portrayal of the nutty Peggy Blumquist on Fargo Season 2 was legendary and I hope they start recognizing her more for her epic work.

Hidden Figures is playing in theaters now.

This post is approved by me meeting Molly this past summer:

OMG the queen bad b*tch of Runway is making her debut on the golden stage. That’s right hunnies, Devil Wears Prada is heading to Broadway!! And that’s not even the best news…the famous duo writing the musical adaptation are…. Elton John and Paul Rudnik!

“To bring The Devil Wears Prada to the stage, we knew we needed to find artists as inimitable as the characters in the story,” Bob Cohen of Fox Stage Productions and McCollum said a joint statement. “We needed artists whose work has run the gamut from music and publishing to drama and fashion. We could think of only two names: Elton John and Paul Rudnick. That’s all!” John is writing the music, and Rudnick is penning the book and lyrics.

Rudnick’s myriad credits include Broadway’s I Hate Hamlet and such other stage fare as Jeffrey and The New Century, along with the the screenplays for In & Out andAddams Family Values. He also has authored novels and written for The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, Vogue and other magazines. (via Deadline)

We can’t wait until a Miranda Presley is found that can rival Meryl Streep‘s cold fierceness!

After a successful grand opening of “Surviving Trump: The Art of Resistance,”  last week, WOW Co-Founder Fenton Bailey jetted off to Sundance Film Festival and has been making the rounds at all films resistance! We shared his riveting review of the moving An Inconvenient Sequel two days ago and he just attended the screening for Joshua: Teenager Vs. Check out what he had to say about the enigmatic film:

The last few days have felt like political assault and battery from the very person Americans – albeit a minority of them – chose to unite and protect them. With over 40 executive actions so far, the setbacks feel endless. In 100 hours – let alone 100 days – the United States has become a different country. And we haven’t seen anything yet.

The brief euphoria that marching afforded has been swiftly replaced by the certainty that there will be retribution and escalation, because that’s the way it is in relationships with narcissists. Especially if you elect them as your President and they are completely insane – with a cherry on top.And while we can resist and make light, so many of us feel a rising sense of dread. Perhaps this is why, sitting down yesterday morning at the Sundance film festival to watch an 8:30 am screening, I found myself starting to cry. Then the film started and I kept on crying…

“Joshua: Teenager vs Superpower” is a documentary relating the recent conflicts between Hong Kong and China. At issue are the broken promises China made to Hong Kong when this former British colony was handed back to them after 150 years of democracy and freedom.  Hong Kong was supposed to be able to elect its own leader, but China kept on stalling and installing puppets.

It is in this hopeless, depressing situation that we are introduced to Joshua, a skinny geeky teenager.  Like any other kid his age he goes to school.  But he is extremely unhappy because the Chinese government are phasing in their standardized curriculum which is very different to the liberal syllabus that Hong Kong has been using. So with a couple of friends he begins a protest.

So great is his single mindedness and dedication, that even though he weighs 90lbs wet he punches above his weight, sparking a populist movement that results in the Chinese government backtracking and allowing schools to choose which curriculum they want to use.

And it doesn’t end there. He goes on to lead a movement that sees millions takes to the streets and occupy them for months to force China to let Hong Kong choose its own leaders.

This inspiring film about resistance really brought home that we are one people living on one planet.  Whether the problem is American nationalism or Chinese imperialism, one person – and possibly the least likely person of all – can stand up to brute power and stare down the bullies.

I was still crying by the end of film, but they were very different kind of tears: Yes, we can and we will, thanks to the example of Joshua Wong.

Netflix picked up the film at the festival and hopefully they’ll be streaming it soon.
